Beginnings

The beginning of a new year brings much anticipation for positive growth. Thinking about what to do differently and how to make the most out of the New Year, it’s like having a fresh start. I was reading an article the other day that said in December of 2013, 45 percent of Americans planned to make a 2014 New Year’s resolution. Self-improvement or education-related goals were popular, as well as fitness and weight loss objectives. Saving or investing money, getting organized and strengthening or mending personal relationships were also in the mix. But, only eight percent of those surveyed indicated they were consistently successful in achieving their goals; in fact, 24 percent reported they had never successfully kept a resolution for more than a brief period of time.

or most, the month of January stirs thoughts of reflection on the year(s) past. It becomes a time of personal and professional contemplation. We often look at the struggles or personal battles we experienced throughout the year, and then create goals, or “resolutions,” to reach in the new.

Coaches keep you on track; they are there for you when your will power goes missing in action. They help you through the struggles of lifestyle changes, weight loss, diet shifts and more. Dollar for dollar, they are worth their weight in gold.

But, ponder this…

Look through this issue and enjoy. You will find many coaches that will help you reach your goals, whatever they may be. To help you on your way remember these words: Think positively, Exercise daily, Eat healthy, work hard, stay strong, build faith, worry less, read more and Be Happy!

These goals we create are birthed from negativity, yet we are surprised when they are not held fast. If we were to focus energy on goals that mirrored the positive aspects of the year, our strengths and allies, our success might lie not only in real achievements, but also within our psyche.

ULTIMATE Green Smoothie Submitted By Shannon Vigil, Holistic Health Coach

O

ne of the keys to a healthy lifestyle is getting plenty of dark leafy greens in your diet. Green smoothies are a simple, convenient way to do that. This recipe combines spinach with easy to digest protein, healthy fats and low glycemic fruit. It’s gluten free, dairy free and vegan! Time: 5 minutes Serves 1 person INGREDIENTS: *use organic whenever possible

• 1 cup unsweetened almond milk

• 1 big handful of baby spinach

• ¼ avocado

• 3 tablespoons hemp seeds

• 1 medium apple, chopped

• ½ lemon, peeled

• 1 cup filtered water

DIRECTIONS: Place all ingredients in a high-speed blender and gradually blend from low speed to high speed for about 30 seconds. Then blend on high for another 30 seconds to get a smooth consistency. If you want a sweeter smoothie, you can swap the apple for half of a banana. Serve cold immediately. Enjoy! Shannon Vigil is a Holistic Health Coach and creator of a healthy recipes blog. Testosterone

Life is Fun Again! Written By Dr. Bill Clearfield

T

estosterone is the main male sex hormone produced in the testicles and adrenal gland, and secreted in the testes. With age, less and less testosterone is produced, resulting in hypogonadism. An estimated 20 percent of men over the age of 50 have abnormally low testosterone levels.

Signs and symptoms of Testosterone Deficiency include low libido, inability to maintain an erection, anxiety, depression, weight gain, decreased fitness level and effectiveness of workouts, low self esteem, thin drying hair, sagging cheeks, droopy eyelids, thin lips, muscle wasting, memory loss, joint pain, loss of drive, competitive edge, increased brain aging, cardiovascular aging, persistent fatigue, irritable, nervous and hesitant, increased fat in hips, abdomen, and breasts and anemia.

Testosterone declines with age beginning in the early 30s, with levels naturally decreasing by one percent/year by age 40. Between ages 25 and 75, men experience a 30 percent decrease in total testosterone, and a 50 percent decrease in free Testosterone. The restoration of testosterone to optimal levels results in increased sexual interest and performance, increased sense of well-being, increased muscle mass, strength, endurance and exercise tolerance. Memory and cognition are restored, skin turgor improves, belly fat decreases, LDL (bad) cholesterol and high blood pressure are reduced, depression is lessened and heart attacks are much less frequent.

Testosterone declines with age beginning in the early 30s. Testosterone gels are applied to the upper inner thigh he once or twice daily. Care needs to be taken to avoid transference to significant others.

This progressive decline of free testosterone results in “male menopause,” or “andropause.” Andropause contributes to diabetes/metabolic syndrome, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, Frailty Syndrome, osteoporosis, and chronic inflammation.

Intramuscular injection is the most common form of testosterone administration. A thick solution made in oil, they are given every three days to once every two weeks.

Natural sources of testosterone include ginseng, zinc, Vitamin D, nuts, garlic, and caffeine. Natural testosterone lowers total cholesterol and raises HDL. Synthetic testosterone does the opposite.

Pellets are implanted in buttocks via small incision. They have the advantage of providing a steady stream of testosterone and last four to seven months.

Laboratory studies needed prior to treatment include: CBC, Total/Free Testosterone, PSA, DHEA, DHT, SHBG, Estradiol, LH/ FSH, Lipids, Glucose, Insulin, HBA1C, and Prolactin.

Lastly, Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG), the same hormone used in very low calorie weight loss plans is used if one wants to preserve fertility or restore testicular size. It is the preferred agent of choice for patients under 40.

Hormones do not exist in a vacuum. When considering treatment options we strive for a balance of all hormones including estrogen, progesterone, DHEA, insulin, cortisol, thyroid, Vitamin D, and testosterone. Adequate sleep is vital to one’s wellbeing, as well as stress reduction, strength and cardiovascular training, and identifying toxin exposures and inflammation.

Contraindications for testosterone therapy includes active prostate cancer, breast cancer, unexplained PSA elevation, and elevated red blood cell count (hematocrit > 50), congestive heart failure, and if fertility is to be preserved. Side effects of testosterone include increased red blood cell count, breast development (relieved with lowering dose, antiestrogen medication anastazole or natural estrogen inhibitors quercitin, chrysin, resversetrol, and zinc), fluid retention decreased testicle size, decreased sperm count, and elevated PSA.

Testosterone replacement is achieved via gel, injection or pellet insertion. It is never given orally, as its metabolites are hepatotoxic, causing liver cancer. (Oakland Raider’s great Lyle Alzado was the first known athlete to succumb to liver cancer due to oral testosterone ingestion.) Fortunately, the other administrative forms are safe with a few precautions.

A popular myth, handed down since the 1940s, relates testosterone and prostate cancer. Multiple reports revealed no prostate cancer progression with testosterone administration. There was no evidence of an increased risk of prostate cancer in clinical trials of testosterone supplementation based on longitudinal or population-based studies of highrisk population of hypo-gonadal men receiving testosterone treatment. In fact, it should be recognized that prostate cancer becomes more prevalent exactly at the time in a man’s life when testosterone levels decline.

MEN! Tired all the time? Gaining weight? Low libido? Moody and Irritable?

The goal is for patients to optimize all of their hormone levels. Restoration of hormones is not isolated to testosterone for men, or estrogen and progesterone for women. You have to measure and monitor all of the body’s hormones in order to retain optimal health.

You may be suffering from low testosterone. Bio Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy can reverse the symptoms of hormone imbalance returning men to their optimal physical, sexual, mental and emotional health of their 20’s.

N

early 70 percent of Americans are overweight! With advancements in science and technology, it’s surprising that so many are still struggling with this issue. The truth is the weight gain epidemic is getting worse because what we’ve been taught isn’t working. We’ve been taught that in order to lose weight, we should simply take in less calories than we use up. We’ve been taught that with enough willpower, we can control cravings. Then there’s the theory that intense exercise is the key to success. If these strategies worked, then you probably wouldn’t be reading this article right now. In a state of balance, a healthy body is a fat burning machine. When it’s out of balance, it will store fat. We’ve got to shift our beliefs about food and weight loss and focus on being healthy in order to lose weight, instead of the other way around.

The Road to Sustainable Weight Loss There are two critical factors that affect the body’s ability to burn fat and maintain a healthy weight: toxins and stress. Once we understand how these factors impact our biochemistry, we can bust those myths about weight loss we’ve been led to believe.

Critical Factor #1: Toxins Sugar, trans fats, alcohol, caffeine and other environmental toxins must be processed by the liver. As you can imagine, the liver can get overwhelmed and overloaded, which causes a bottleneck. When this happens, toxins get recycled back into your body and stored in your fat cells. Your body is truly amazing. It has a built-in detoxification process, but it needs less of the bad stuff and more of the good stuff to function properly. Dark leafy greens, fiber, and phytonutrients enhance the body’s ability to release the toxins that are keeping you fat.

In a state of balance, a healthy body is a fat burning machine.

EAR CANDLING

Written By Karen Tenaglio | MTNV#1534

T

here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache.

Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment.

Critical Factor #2: Stress When you’re stressed, your body believes you’re in danger and releases two important hormones that prepare you for “fight or flight”. These hormones are adrenalin and cortisol.

• Adrenalin is the short-term stress hormone. It’s designed to get you out of danger, fast! In every moment, your body is deciding whether to burn fat, which is slow burning, or sugar, which is fast burning. Guess which type of fuel your body chooses when adrenalin is present? The type that burns quickly...sugar! And doesn’t matter if the danger is a real one, like a tiger chasing you, or a perceived one, like 500 emails in your inbox after vacation. Your body reacts the same whether the stress is physical or psychological.

References: Tatum, Anne. Ear Candling. A.P. Enterprises. 1995.

The real issue is that many of us are in a chronic state of “fight or flight,” due to the nature of modern life, and therefore burn and crave sugar no matter how much fat is available.

• Cortisol is the long-term stress hormone. Traditionally, its job was to help us survive when food was scarce, like floods, famine and war. Cortisol signals to your cells to slow your

metabolism and store fat, especially around the belly. Today, cortisol is triggered by so-called issues that plague us day-in and day-out. Financial stress, relationship problems, even weight loss. How many of you have been worried about your weight every day for years?

Are you a successful go getter,

but just can’t lose the weight?

To add insult to injury, the most common response to tighter fitting clothes is to go on a diet and restrict calories. This only reinforces the idea that food is scarce, triggering more cortisol production and further promoting fat storage. Understanding toxins and stress should give you a better idea why calorie counting, willpower and intense exercise aren’t sustainable solutions to your weight loss problem. No matter how great your diet is, or how much you exercise, if you have too much cortisol and adrenaline it’s nearly impossible to burn fat. Furthermore, if your body’s natural detox pathways are clogged, fat will stay put to provide a safe place for toxins.

Struggling with:

• no energy • sugar cravings • belly bulge • digestive issues • hormonal imbalances • can’t sleep

Start by giving your body the message that you’re safe from “danger” by taking five, deep, long breaths from your diaphragm at least once a day. Incorporate yoga, meditation or time in nature into your weekly schedule. Reduce alcohol, caffeine, sugar and processed foods and fill up on vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats instead. These strategies will help put your body back in balance and become the fat-burning machine it was designed to be.

Let’s design a healthy lifestyle that works for you! Look beautiful, feel balanced, and boldly go after what you want in life!

Zombies

in Everyone Written By Andy Drymalski, EdD

I

n recent years, zombies have become an increasingly popular theme in movies, television and literature. From what I can tell, they have also been spending a lot more time stumbling across the landscape of peoples’ dreams. What is it about the walking dead that has captured the interest of so many people? Or, perhaps a better question is: what is taking place in our society and our individual psychologies that makes zombies a relevant theme?

this image symbolically, zombies represent ourselves when we have lost touch with our own soul, when we move like automatons, blindly and more or less unconsciously through life. We may appear to be awake when in fact we have fallen asleep to our soul, the font of our individuality. Carl Jung once wrote, “The more you cling to that which all the world desires, the more you are Everyman, who has not yet discovered himself and stumbles through the world like a blind man leading the blind with somnambulistic certainty into the void where all the paralyzed ones follow him. Everyman is always a multitude. Cleanse your interest of that collective sulphur [an alchemical symbol of desire] which clings to all like

Unlike a ghost, which is a disembodied spirit, a zombie is a dis-spirited body. They are human entities that behave as if they are alive, yet they are “dead.” Their soul/spirit is elsewhere. They lack consciousness and the spark of life. If we look at

“when people dream of zombies it is often because they are losing or have lost touch with their individuality.” a leprosy. For desire only burns in order to burn itself out, and in and from this fire arises the true living spirit which generates life according to its own laws…” (MysteriumConiunctionis, CW 14, pars. 189ff)

and quality of your relationships? Are the latest spiritual and metaphysical fads (e.g., The Secret) helping you become more conscious of your shadow, or do they just embolden your ego? The values of materialism, narrow self-interest and expediency are on the rise, displacing the character-building values of honesty, integrity, compassion and service. What better metaphor than the zombie to depict the psychological and spiritual cannibalism that is starting to proliferate in our society? What better image to describe people who are falling asleep to the reality and value of their own souls?

The “Everyman” for Jung is the societal man, the part of us that thinks, values and behaves in accordance with the collective viewpoint of the many. To the extent that we see and live within the bubble of this perspective, much of our thinking and feeling is done for us by others and we lose touch with our own individuality. As we are educated into the desires of the world we are often de-educated from the desires of our soul. The result of this is what Jung calls a “somnambulistic certainty,” a sleepwalking arrogance, otherwise known as egocentricity. We are entranced by our own worldview and goals, but fall utterly asleep to the wisdom and values of our deeper self.

For more info, contact Dr. Andy Drymalski, Reno and Carson City psychologist at (775) 786-3818, or visit online at renocarsonpsychologist.com. Enjoy his blog at Jungstop.com.

In my experience, when people dream of zombies it is often because they are losing or have lost touch with their individuality. They may be relying on the consensual “wisdom” of society rather than seeking out and trusting the guidance of their own soul and intuition. They are falling asleep to their inner spirituality and calling. Such dreams should be taken seriously and not brushed aside as the chance result, for example, of a zombie show you recently viewed. It is important to reflect on the ways you may be trading your soul for conformity, and a path of consciousness for unconsciousness.

See ad on this page.

In recent years, zombies have taken on a new characteristic. Modern depictions of zombies show them to be more violent and carnivorous towards the living. They are more determined and contagious, readily transmitting their deadness and somnambulism to those they attack. Why is this trend occurring? I believe it reflects a more virulent and aggressive process of soul attack, clone-making, and spiritual unconsciousness in the world today. For example, time- and mind-wasting activities beckon daily, vying for attention through your phone, computer and television. Is the newest video game or reality TV show helping you develop your unique potential and gifts? Is Facebook adding to the depth

WHAT IS LIFE COACHING AND HOW CAN IT HELP YOU?

O

nce Eric Schmidt, the CEO of Google, was told by one of his key board members, “You need to get a coach.” Schmidt was astonished, and asked why. The answer was, “Everyone needs a coach. A coach helps you see beyond your normal boundaries.” Harvard Business School Review agrees, stating that, “Coaching has evolved into the mainstream. This is because there’s a great demand for results, and coaching can help provide those.”

The four most well-known types of coaching are Life Coaching, Business Coaching, Executive Coaching and Entrepreneurial Coaching. Coaching is described as, “A partnership between the coach and the client, engaging in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires the client to maximize his/her personal and professional potential.” Months later, when asked on TV for the best piece of advice he could give the viewers, Eric Schmidt said, “Get a coach.”

People who get coaching usually have a brighter, more empowered outlook on life. Coaching helps people in three ways: First of all, no one gets listened to in life--a coach does listen and allows people to reflect about their decisions and about themselves. Secondly, people usually avoid difficult truths. Coaching brings reality front and center. Thirdly, most people don’t know how to change. A coach can guide the client to find replacements for behavior that’s not working.

Coaching Federation study showed that the average person can see a return on investment of 344 percent from coaching and businesses can expect to see a 700 percent return on investment (ROI). So why don’t more people hire coaches? They feel that it may be too expensive, they may feel they don’t have the time or they may feel they don’t have the energy. Coaching costs between $85 per individual session to $10,000 for a full months-long program. It depends on the coach and on what type of coaching you need: personal, business, professional or entrepreneurial. But studies show that once people do get coached, 99 percent believe that it was the single best investment they could have made in themselves. There are lots of websites which explain different programs and their cost. So, do your research if you think you’re stuck. Personal coaching may be just the thing to get you moving forward in the New Year.

A coach isn’t tied to your company, your family, your friends or anyone else. They are tied to you only, so they support what you want and where you want to go. The perspectives they provide, the alternatives discussed and everything else has no agenda except to support you. You bring the agenda and content to this partnership. The coach brings the process. Coaching is not therapy, although it can lead to healing and the release of old issues or unproductive beliefs. Coaching isn’t counseling, although there may be an exchange of advice or guidance involved. Coaching isn’t training, but it usually is about passing on new knowledge of some kind. Coaching involves active listening and honest feedback, because we often fail to see ourselves the way the rest of the world sees us. As the client is introduced to the coach’s perspective, it leads to new ideas and solutions. Also, the coach holds the client accountable. Sometimes we don’t follow through if we don’t have a target date to complete something or if we don’t have someone holding us accountable in some way.

estosterone The autonomic part of your nervous system is that part of your nervous system that controls your organs, glands, blood vessels and all other body physiology, of which we have no conscious awareness. If you lose brain function due to degeneration (brain wear and tear) you can develop high blood pressure, erectile dysfunction, incontinence, dry eyes, digestive problems and more.

or more. Normal output generates parasympathetic responses, while dampening the sympathetic “stress” response. This ensures that digestion is strong, blood pressure is normal and there is enough tears, mucous and saliva in your body. When any part of your brain degenerates due to chronic illness or stress, there is less input into the “rest and digest” part of your brain, and increases in “fight, flight stress-based” activity.

This autonomic system consists of two complimentary but completely opposite categories of nerve function: the sympathetic “fight-flight” system and the parasympathetic rest and digest system. Clearly, these two systems cannot both function at the same time.

Even if you are not chronically ill, brain degeneration can suppress your rest and digest systems and lead to insomnia,

If the sympathetic nervous system gets stimulated you get a startled response, such as when someone jumps out from behind a door and yells “BOO!” to scare you. If the parasympathetic’s are stimulated you will get a relaxing response, such as digesting a nice meal while sitting in your favorite chair listening to soft music. Again these two systems cannot simultaneously dominate, so when one is active the other one is disengaged. What’s the most common trigger for the “startled” response? Stress. Especially chronic stress, which means for most stressed out Americans relaxation and digestion and other important parasympathetic activated take a back seat to the action-oriented, get up and go sympathetic nervous system.

What’s the most common trigger for the “startled” response? Stress. high blood pressure or chronic digestive issues. Severe stress such as physical, verbal or sexual abuse can cause suppression of the “rest and digest” system 24/7 for days, weeks, months or years. This brain-based mechanism is usually a contributing factor to chronic pain syndromes. To correct this damaging mechanism, the basic fundamentals of brain health must be addressed. Are brain cells receiving enough oxygen, glucose and stimulation? Are blood sugar issues, poor liver function, inflammation, hormonal imbalances or lack of neurotransmitter (i.e. serotonin, dopamine, gaba acetylcholine) activity promoting brain degeneration? Is plasticity (the ability of your brain to adapt to change) being promoted? Incorporating these fundamentals for brain heath into any chronic pain and condition program provides the most complete approach to these rather difficult to respond problems. In fact, it is impossible to separate the health of your body or mind from the health of your brain, and any health care that ignores the brain will always be incomplete care.

How’s Your Hearing? Written By Michael Gerber, MD, HMD

N

ew Hearing Discovery

as a Rock and R & B musician in high school and college. In one year, I lost from 17,000 hertz (cycles per second) down to 7,000 hertz in my hearing. This year, after some complaints from my wife, I had my hearing tested. As one might expect, my low and mid-range hearing were normal, but my high end dropped off precipitously. After taking mustard seed tincture for three months, my high end hearing improved by about 10 percent on retesting.

It is unusual to run into a new/old discovery to help us with hearing loss as we age. Ringing in the ears, tinnitus, which also happens as we age and after exposure to loud noises, shooting, industrial exposure, loud music, etc., these can all be very debilitating. Thiosinaminum, Mustard Seed Tincture While checking for homeopathic remedies for ear ringing, I came across Thiosinaminum, mustard seed extract. It is used as a tincture in water and taken in all homeopathic potencies. In addition to hearing loss and tinnitus, it is beneficial for dissolving scar tissues and keloids, Alzheimer’s disease, senile dementia, hardening of the arteries, tumors, adhesions, allergies, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, cataracts, corneal opacities, Dupuytren’s contractures, emphysema, fibroids, Meniere’s disease, vertigo, old age, otitis media, painful adhesions, premature aging and a host of other maladies.

One of my patients in her mid-seventies was completely deaf in one ear, and after only one month taking the Thiosinaminum, she could hear her alarm clock on that previously deaf side. Before the treatment, if her good ear was buried in the pillow, she would miss the alarm. Usually, this treatment takes weeks and months but ear ringing can resolve much more quickly. It is daunting how many people have hearing issues. Mustard seed tincture, of course, is not helpful in congenital deafness or nerve damage due to side effects from medications, however it is great for so many other conditions, especially the aging brain and memory.

My hearing, I thought, was irreversibly damaged in the high frequency range after exposure to loud amplifiers in my youth

Everything You Need to Know about the Law of Attraction

Even though the information has been readily available since Esther Hicks began the Abraham work in the middle 80s, many people are still confused. Even after The Secret documentary and book became a worldwide phenomenon, many people are not getting the results they want while thinking they’re using the principles correctly. They continue to be disappointed and frustrated, maybe even giving up and declaring that the Law of Attraction just doesn’t work!

your expectations and you may not even see them as negative. They are just part of “who you are.” But long-held beliefs have a powerful energy that can block your expectation of success. For instance, some negative habits of thinking (beliefs) that are fairly universal are the following:

Bob Doyle was one of the authors featured in the movie The Secret but he had been using and teaching the principles for many years before that. He had already identified and worked out the blocks that cause many people to give up. This book explains how to let go of those negative thoughts and belief systems that are blocking you. By doing this, you can open up to receive the things you want and deserve. We all have negative or limiting beliefs that have been instilled in us by family, religion or culture. Those beliefs have become part of

These (and other) negative beliefs and habits will stop you in your tracks, and you weren’t born with any of them. You’ve picked them up along the way and have made them yours. PHYSICAL PAIN? Is Stress causing your Pain? Have you been involved in an auto accident?

The author makes it clear that the Law of Attraction is not a personal development tool that you can use the right way or wrong way; it’s a profound statement of how Energy works in the Universe. He explains the critical role that our belief systems play, and shows how to dissolve the resistance that arises from limiting belief systems. He also helps you clarify your vision into one that inspires you and puts you into alignment with the creative Energy of the universe.

You’ll learn here how to listen to your intuition and let it lead you into inspired action. One of the weakest parts of the movie The Secret was the impression that you didn’t really have to take any action--you just had to think of what you wanted. Action is important, and inspired action is magic. But the movie was only about 90 minutes long and certainly couldn’t flesh out all the critical ideas and necessary actions related to such a complex concept. One of the goals of this book is to address head-on the objections, questions and comments that have surfaced about the Law of Attraction. People have legitimate questions that naturally arise when such a new and radical concept enters their brain space. Anyone of any background should be able to understand the truth of these principles clearly after reading the book and be able to implement what they learned. It’s true that every thought and emotion has a vibrational impact. Emotion is energy in motion. But, it’s the conscious action we take that brings about the results we want.

Reversing the Plague

of Heart Disease

I

Written By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.

n efforts lead by the American Heart Association and the AMA, we have been told to cut down on the incidence of heart disease, we need to reduce the “risk factors.” These are things like high cholesterol, smoking, high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes. Prescription drugs serve as the centerpiece of these programs, with counseling, diet and education as adjunct treatments. Study results by the Cochrane Heart Group showed that treating risk factors was “ineffective in achieving reductions in total cardiovascular disease mortality (death).” Indeed, the findings of these interventional programs showed that some people actually got worse! Overall, deaths actually increased among the drug-treated high blood pressure group. Some people with the very highest risk factors did benefit.

When someone dies of heart disease, and the doctor tells the family “we did everything possible” (unfortunately the doctor truly believes that he/she did everything possible), they did not “do everything possible”! This is due to a deficiency in our medical education system that teaches only drugs are the answer. Therefore, the underlying cause of most heart disease remains ignored and untreated. Using “everything possible” boils down to using drugs and surgery to manipulate symptoms caused by nutritional deficiencies and imbalances that continue right up to the patient’s death! How long has this been known? In the 1930s, a number of facts were discovered in nutritional studies:

• Deficiency of certain B vitamins leads to heart block and remarkably slow pulse

We have known for almost 80 years the heart is the most responsive organ in the body to nutritional therapy. We have also known that nutritional complexes can heal people with even advanced heart disease. Drugs and medical therapies fail to address the underlying cause of heart disease. Unfortunately, this failure is ensured to continue!

• Deficiency of whole vitamin C complex results in physical weakness, rapid heartbeat, and a tendency towards inflammation of the blood vessels and heart • The whole B complex is necessary for the proper transmission of nerve impulses throughout the heart’s electrical circuit, and deficiencies and imbalances can cause arrhythmias, extra beats, heart block, atrial fibrillation and more.

References: 1. cochrane.org 2. West, Bruce, D.C. The 45 Day Health Turnaround. Health Alert.

• In 1938, vitamin B4 was discovered in wheat germ. It was shown to “quickly eliminate loss of muscular coordination in the heart.” Experiments at that time treated heart disease and block with synthetic versions of a few B vitamins (mostly B1 and B2) and these failed miserably. When the phytonutrientrich whole B complex was used, “heart block was cured.”

For more info, contact Reno Integrative Medical Center at (775) 829-1009, or visit online at renointegrative.com.

It is ironic that B4 and lots of whole B complex vitamins come from the germ of cereal grains. Cereals today are stripped of these vitamins and then “fortified” by replacing a few of the B vitamins with synthetic substitutions. Today, many people who are dying from heart disease eat tons of cereals and bread; all fortified with synthetic B vitamins. Vitamin B4 has been deemed not necessary for human health by “the powers that be.”

CRYSTOLOGY

Aquamarine Treasure of the Mermaids

A

Written By Lissie Lyles

quamarine is a semi-precious crystal of the Beryl family. Its pale blue color has long evoked association with water, the sea and water goddesses. In ancient lore, Aquamarine was believed to be the treasure of mermaids, and was used by sailors as a talisman of good luck, fearlessness and protection. Even today, many still wear the stone as protection when traveling over the water, whether by boat or airplane. The name Aquamarine comes from the Latin aqua marinus, meaning “water of the sea.” Beads of Aquamarine have been found in Egyptian mummy-pits, and the Greeks used Aquamarine for intaglios more than two thousand years ago. In antiquity, it was also called precious Beryl.

As a love crystal, pale blue Aquamarine encourages lovers to reconcile. It helps two people with different lifestyles to live together in harmony, and reduces the effects of sensitive issues that cause quarrels. Aquamarine is similar to Amethyst in that it is soothing to emotions. It is a stone of peace, joy and happiness for relationships.

Aquamarine is a receptive stone, associated with the moon, and the element of water. It is often used in energy and intention work for purification, and enhancing courage, peace and psychic abilities. Associated with the Throat chakra, Aquamarine helps one overcome the fear of speaking, and is an excellent stone for teachers and presenters of all types. It helps the speaker achieve a state of consciousness in which they are fully aware of their own truth, and able to articulate it with clarity and conviction. It also allows one to speak clearly, without anger in difficult situations.

Since Aquamarine has strong associations with water, bathing with it is a great way to harness its purifying energy. Tinctures of this crystal can be made by placing the crystal is a glass of fresh water, and letting it sit in the light of the moon for at least three hours. Drinking this tincture is said to aid in purification, enhance psychic ability and even enhance youthfulness and beauty.

References:

Aquamarine encourages the ideal of service to the world and to the development of a humanity attuned to healing. It emits a gentle and compassionate energy, promoting moderation and responsibility for ones’ actions. It inspires judgmental people to be more tolerant, and helps those overwhelmed by responsibility to find order.

or this month’s Ingredient watch, we will take a break from scanning ingredient lists for hidden poisons and focus our attention of meal planning. As anyone who is in charge of meal plans for their family knows, this work can be exhausting. Planning, shopping for, preparing and cleaning up meals is not an easy task. Making sure meals are nutritionally balanced and healthy add another challenge to the equation. Many of us who already have busy enough lives can find it hard to balance all our responsibilities. It is easy to understand why busy people opt for cheap fast food meal options out of sheer exhaustion and lack of time. For this month’s column, we’ll look at a few different options to help one streamline and organize healthy meal plans for their family. From recipe subscriptions, to prepackaged meals, to a mix of both. Let’s explore some options below.

What is it: Real Simple Weekly Meal Planner How it works: Monthly subscription for a weekly shopping list and recipes for 5 dinner meals. You shop for ingredients and prepare meals yourself. Cost: $10/12 month subscription Pros: Meals can be prepared in under an hour, most ingredients are fresh, and the recipes include a calorie count and nutrition information. Cons: Recipes are not suitable for vegetarians, vegans, or those with gluten intolerance (or at least they would need to be modified). Where to find out more: https://subscription.realsimple.com

What it is: Blue Apron

What it is: Pre-made Paleo

How it works: You are shipped a refrigerated box that includes a recipe and all the ingredients you will need to assemble a meal. Much of the pre-work is done for you, most meals can be completed in about 35 minutes.

How it works: Subscriptions for premade meals that adhere to the Paleo diet. (AKA lot of meat and veggies, no grains, dairy or legumes). Meals are frozen and shipped packed in dry ice, meant to be re-heated on your stove-top.

Cost: Meals average about $9.99 per person, per meal. Pros: Meals can be customized to meet your specific dietary needs. Blue apron sources many ingredients from family owned farms and purveyors that prioritize sustainable practices. Blue Apron offers free shipping to many part of the county, including Nevada.

Cost: For an individual, meals average about $32/ each if you buy at a bulk rate. Family bulk meal plans lower costs to about $10/person/meal. This excludes the cost of shipping. Pros: All vegetables are organic, and all meat is grass fed, free range or pasture raised. Suitable for gluten free folk and those allergic to dairy. Affordable shipping rates if ordering healthy meals or snacks for those serving in the armed forces. In Nevada, shipping and handling is free for orders that exceed $250. Meals are shipped in BPA-free packaging.

Cons: They do not specify if ingredients are organic. Blue Apron also does not specify their specific location, so chances are your meal and its ingredients have to travel a long way, which involves increased fossil fuel use, and reduces over-all sustainability of said meal. Many of the “local” farmers they source from are based on the east coast, for example.

Cons: Not suitable for vegetarians or vegans. This company is based in Georgia, so meals are shipped a great distance, which involves burning up lots of fossil fuels to get this meal to your plate.

HERBS&SPICES

Yellow Dock Written By Allison Prater

R

umex crispus, or Yellow dock, is a perennial flowering plant native to Europe and Western Asia. Yellow dock grows in a wide variety of habitats, including disturbed soil, waste areas, roadsides, fields/meadows, shorelines and forest edges. It is widely naturalized throughout the temperate world and has become a serious invasive species in many areas, including throughout North America, southern South America, New Zealand and parts of Australia. It spreads through the seeds contaminating crop seeds, and sticking to clothing. The most commonly used part of the plant is the root, which has several medicinal properties. In traditional herbal medicine, yellow dock is thought to be a general health tonic. It is said to benefit the digestive tract, liver and skin. One of its primary uses by herbalists is for skin conditions associated with poor digestion, or poor liver function. Yellow dock acts as a mild laxative due to the presence of constituents known as anthraquinone glycosides, which appear to stimulate the release of bile and digestive enzymes. Increased bile production is especially helpful in assisting with the digestion of fats. In Western herbalism, the root is often used for treating anemia, due to its high level of iron. In fact, it is one of the best sources of naturally available iron. Midwives often use this plant to correct anemia in pregnant women. It can be powdered and given in the form of capsules, often in combination with stinging nettle, another herb that has a high iron content. The leaves of the yellow dock plant, which have a distinctive curled edge, may be eaten as a vegetable. The leaves are best consumed as young shoots, as they become too bitter as they mature. Because of their high oxalic content, it is advisable

to use these leaves sparingly, if you plan to consume them raw. Otherwise, boiling the leaves, with at least one change of water will greatly reduce the oxalic acid content. Excessive consumption of oxalic acid can contribute to kidney stones and joint pain.

Yellow dock may also be used topically, especially for the treatment of itchy skin. The Zuni people apply a poultice of the powdered root to sores, rashes and skin infections, and use the infusion of the root to treat athlete’s foot. Yellow dock is also part of the homeopathic pharmacopeia. It is used mainly for respiratory conditions, specifically those with a tickling cough that is worse when exposed to cold air. It is also used for passing pains, excessive itching and enlarged lymph nodes.

A lot of research is still unavailable about yellow dock, so it is best to discuss the use of this herb with your care provider before ingesting it. It is known that this herb should not be ingested by those with kidney disease, liver disease, or an electrolyte abnormality. Women who are pregnant or nursing should consult with their care providers before working with this herb.
