amily comes to mind when we approach the month of November. When you think of your family, what comes to mind? Did you grow up in a loving environment, or did you grow up feeling unloved? Did you grow up feeling your parents criticized you, or gave you guidance? Did you get along with your siblings, or did you need to compete for attention? How do you articulate your memories growing up? Do you blame, or are you grateful?

The Art of Sharing Learn to Listen to Your Body Abnormal Menstrual Periods Dangerous Virus Defense Leaky Gut Part 2 What to do?

I am grateful that even though I grew up in home that was not perfect, I knew deep down my parents loved me. My parents instilled in me--in an early age--that I could attain anything I wanted if I exerted the effort. I am thankful for that message and have passed it on to my children and hopefully they, in turn, will pass it on to theirs.

You too can materialize your goals; it takes visualization. Feeling the visual and thinking “yes I can” thoughts, knowledge and action. Twenty-seven years ago, a sales director shared how he obtained his goals. He simply said, “Plan your work and work your plan!”

he white pumpkin is a beautiful contrast to the standard colors of orange and brown, commonly used in fall décor. Pumpkin farmers breed these little cuties, and now, they’ve become a favorite addition to the harvest scene. Look for them at your local grocery store, local farm or your favorite pumpkin patch. They are also known as Albino pumpkins, Casper, Snowball and Ghost pumpkins (just to name a few).

No matter what your mantra is, exerting effort is key in reaching your goal. Government and politicians want to tell us there is a “war on women” in the United States. When we look at some of the drastic differences in what other women experience around the world (especially those in third world countries), compared to the perceived “war” women face here in America, it seems the verbiage is overplayed and exaggerated--almost to the point of insulting women who are truly experiencing war.

This is also reminiscent of the beauty surrounding us, in all shapes, sizes and colors. Albeit a bred variety of “nature,” the white pumpkin carries its own story, its own history. Similar to one culture merging with another. One history, rich with tradition and intense meaning, morphing into a future filled with diversity and new purpose.

Politicians use this phrase to control and agitate the ignorant. This tactic is merely a tool of deceit and deflection from the truth. Government is not the answer; you are the answer to your current situation. If you want change, first you must be the change.

Life provides lessons in places where you least expect them. I am thankful for taking time to breathe and relax, so that I may see the beautiful messages that surround me.

The war is in our head. It is only our self and our thoughts about our self that holds us back or that moves us forward. Blaming others for our misfortunes or poor choices only makes us the victim, not the victor. Life is not perfect. Life is not fair. Life is constantly changing and there will always be challenges. No matter if you are rich or poor, educated or uneducated, each person encounters challenges in life. It is how we view our challenge that will determine if it will tear us down or build us up.

I am grateful this Thanksgiving that our country stands for freedom. I am grateful that my children can take care of themselves. I am grateful that in the United States, people from meager beginnings can reach their goals. It isn’t about where we came from, it is where we are going that matters. Enjoy and learn from the journey. Let go and Let only the good or God flow.

here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache.

Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment.

Volunteers Sought for Upcoming Volunteer Training

Looking for a 2015 calendar that will help you plan your year, offer cool pet tips, and of course, benefit homeless pets? You can purchase the inaugural 2015 Pets on Patrol Calendar featuring beloved pets around the community and esteemed Reno Police Officers for just $12 through November 15. The Trauma Intervention Program of Northern Nevada (TIP) provides citizen volunteers on a 24/7/365 basis to assist those who have experienced a traumatic event. TIP volunteers are called upon by emergency responders such as police, fire, or medical staff, within the first few hours following an incident, to provide emotional & practical support to those affected by the tragedy.

The calendar took shape in July when people were asked to submit their favorite photo of their pet. The public then voted on those photos, and those with the most votes were dubbed the winners. All winners had a professional photo shoot, featuring various Reno Police Officers, courtesy of Susan Koppel Photography.

TIP information night is scheduled for November 6, 2014 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. This 36-hour training, spanning two weeks, will be held at the Regional Public Safety Training Center. These organizations blend traditional Western medicine with a sophisticated testing and treatment plan dedicated to improving the overall health and day-to-day living of his patients.

That same year, Dr. Clearfield opened a family medicine clinic in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. As a pioneer in technology utilization, Dr. Clearfield wrote and programmed his own dietary and lifestyle plan on an Apple IIc computer. He was able to customize specific programs to any patient’s unique medical history and physical needs. This program eventually became “Celestial Stems: A Five Element Approach to Diet and Exercise,” published in 1992.

Enhancing Your Immune System

For Better Health Written By Dr. Tony Jensen

I

t’s that time of the year, when your immune system is kicking into overdrive. Some of the negative effects to our immune system are: changes in the weather, daily stress, what you eat, and how well your nervous system functions. All affect the performance of your immune system. Our immune system protects us against bacteria, viruses, and other disease-causing organisms. It is an efficient, complex defense system. The immune system is basically an interaction between cells and cellular products. The white blood cells (leukocytes), which are the main fighter cells of the immune system, are made up of three classes: lymphocytes, monocytes and granulocytes. Each type of cell has its own functions.

The next important factor: nutrition and the role it plays. Immune system maintenance requires a steady intake of all the necessary vitamins and minerals. This can be accomplished by eating a well-balanced diet, including plenty of fruit and vegetables and yogurt products, on a regular basis. Adding “CPTG” certified pure therapeutic grade essential oils in your daily routine has been found helpful to support and build your immune system. Diets that are high in fat seem to depress the immune response and thus increase the risk of infections. Reducing fat content in the diet can increase immune activity. To date, most studies show that supplements do not stimulate immune response in healthy, well-nourished individuals.

There are different factors to look at. Stress can affect you in many ways. People often notice the emotional effects of stress, but aren’t always aware of the physical impact of stress. Inhibiting our emotions could be another stress factor that negatively affects our health. Bottling up negative emotions seems to tie up resources of the immune system. There is considerable evidence that talking about problems and using mental health services decreases the number of sick days.

Last but not least, the nervous system also plays a key role in the health of your immune system. A study showing the positive effect chiropractic care can have on the immune system and general health was performed by Ronald Pero, Ph.D., chief of cancer prevention research at New York’s Preventive Medicine Institute and professor of medicine at New York University. Dr. Pero measured the immune systems of people under chiropractic care as compared to those in the general

population, and those with cancer and other serious diseases. In his initial three-year study of 107 individuals, who had been under chiropractic care for five years or more, the chiropractic patients were found to have 200 percent greater immune competence than people who had not received chiropractic care, and 400 percent greater immune competence than people with cancer and other serious diseases. The immune system superiority of those under chiropractic care did not diminish with age. So, make sure to keep your nervous system working in its most optimal function. Understanding

Synchronicity Written By Andy Drymalski, EdD

S

ynchronicity is a concept developed by the Swiss psychiatrist, Carl Jung. It refers to a meaningful connection between events that are not causally related. More exactly, it describes a meaningful co-occurrence between an inner psychological state or process, and an outer event that parallels or reflects it. For example, if I am experiencing an inner conflict over a decision I must make and at the same time an argument breaks out between my neighbors in the apartment next door, it is a synchronicity. My inner conflict is symbolically reflected in the outer world, though the two events are not causally connected. If your psychological process involves the development of a new role or orientation to life, and around the same time you also

happen to lose your wallet, this is a synchronicity. Your wallet is where you keep your driver’s license and other cards that identify yourself to the rest of society. The loss of your wallet symbolically reflects your inner process of letting go of (or the need to let go of) an outmoded identity in favor of a new one. Now, let’s say you are resisting this change process; you don’t want to change or take on a different role in your life. The result is you are likely to experience decreased energy. Conflicts between what our ego wants and what our soul intends binds up and blocks the flow of our life energy. We feel more tired, fatigued. We may then experience a synchronicity if we go to start our car but cannot because the battery is dead. The dead battery is an outer life reflection of our own lack of life

Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®

November 2014

Synchronicity is a meaningful, non-causal connection between an inner event (my question) and an outer event (the universe’s answer). energy. Additionally, the situation parallels the fact that life is not supporting or complying with the ego’s goals. The inner conflict is manifesting in outer conflict. The car “refuses” to start.

world and the outer world are mysteriously and meaningfully connected. Pay attention to what is going on inside you and how it may be mirrored in you outer life and relationships. Or, consider how certain outer events might offer insight into your inner life and attitudes, perhaps even answering a question in the background of your mind or heart. Understand the reality of this very important psychological phenomenon and allow life’s synchronicities guide you on your path.

Synchronistic events may also take the form of an answer or inner dilemma. For example, if I am going through a time of trial or worry and I see a rainbow, this may be a synchronistic response to my inner question, “Will I get through this; will things turn out ok?” As it was for Noah in the bible, the rainbow is often a symbol of reassurance or of a promise fulfilled. If I am driving down the road deliberating how I should approach a difficult conversation with a friend and a car with the license plate “BHONEST” passes me, this may well be a synchronicity. It is a meaningful, non-causal connection between an inner event (my question) and an outer event (the universe’s answer).

For more info, contact Dr. Andy Drymalski, Reno and Carson City psychologist at (775) 786-3818, or visit online at renocarsonpsychologist.com. Enjoy his blog at Jungstop.com. See ad on this page.

The idea of synchronicity has its antecedents in the philosophies of the alchemists. In their efforts to transform base metals into gold, and their own lives into instruments of God, they developed the precept, “as above, so below.” Basically, they were saying that the outer world reflects the inner world, or unconscious. They intuited a fundamental symbolic union between the psychic and physical realms. Carl Jung, through his in-depth study of the psyche, arrived at the same conclusion: there is a non-causal substrate to the universe with both psychic and material properties. Modern physics, specifically the field of quantum mechanics, upholds these ideas and supports the premise of a synchronistic dimension to the universe. [For more information, see: integralscience. org/psyche-physis.html by Thomas J. McFarlane.] Synchronicities are a very important part of God’s language. They offer valuable and exciting insight into our psychological process and give us guidance on which direction we are meant to move. Life has very dreamlike qualities in which your inner

Dangerous Virus

Defense Written By Michael Gerber, MD, HMD

E

bola and Others

Dr. Rowen’s Historic Journey

With Ebola virus in the news, along with the mysterious enterovirus in school children and re-emerging West Nile virus, can we have any defense? Yes. There are less well known scientific advances to protect us.

Dr. Robert Rowen, MD, HMD of Santa Rosa, California is a well-known integrative physician and author. He just received permission from the President of Sierra Leone to go to Africa in mid-October with another doctor to treat Ebola patients with intravenous ozone. An ozone company donated 10 ozone machines and he is seeking donations to assist with equipment and transportation. We wish him well and much success. It could be a game changer for Ebola if he is successful and fairly reported by the media.

The list of integrative medicine anti-viral treatments is actually quite long. Perhaps infectious disease doctors have chosen not to recognize them because they are non-drug and nonvaccination. There is lots of data to support their use. We have used vitamin C in high doses intravenously for nearly 40 years.

*A tax deductible donation can be made to Central Nassau County Rotary Foundation and mailed to Howard Robins, 200 W 57th St #207, New York, NY 10019.

In high doses, vitamin C becomes peroxide and it mimics how our body’s white blood cells kill viruses and bacteria. The white cells consume the virus and then kill them with an oxidative burst of peroxide like molecules. Intravenous ozone and peroxide are great anti-viral and antibacterial therapies. They have been used in Germany and around the world since the 1840s.

Other Anti-viral Therapies We see many chronic--as well as acute--viruses and are blessed with a combination of homeopathic viruses, which negate viruses. We can test viruses on our Electro Acupuncture computers. If they test positively, we give a combination of the top ten viruses we generally see in our practice. It’s a 4X, 12X, 30X, 200X homeopathic combination of Adenovirus, Coronavirus, Coxsackie virus, Cytomegalovirus, ECHO virus, Enterovirus, Epstein bar virus, Herpes virus I, II and Zoster (shingles) to make them anti-virus. These are administered into an ankle acupuncture point, Spleen 6, for 12 days. It brings great relief to chronic virus sufferers. We can also give very high dose homeopathic remedies for chronic viruses causing chronic fatigue such as Epstein bar virus.

The German’s also gave us major autohemotherapy, which takes blood out of the patient, passes it through an ultraviolet lamp, ozone or peroxide is injected into the blood and then it is returned to the patient through the ultraviolet light. Chronic Stress, Neuro-Inflammation & Brain Fatigue Written By Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T., C.F.M.P. and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B.

H

• Have you considered adaptogens if under chronic stress (these are often confused with addressing the adrenal glands but in fact these herbs do not work on the adrenal glands, but instead on the stress pathways of the brain)?

ow do you know if you are a victim of neuroinflammation of the brain? Simple, as the brain fatigues, an inflammatory response follows. For instance, let’s say you take a five hour drive when you are used to driving only 15 to 20 minutes a day. After the five hour drive, your joints are suddenly achy and inflamed, or your gut is inflamed and you can’t digest anything. Basically, your brain is most likely degenerating and receiving more stress than it can handle. It fatigues as a result, causing a real stress response in the body. Stress in the brain (neuro-inflammation) causes stress in the body.

• Herbs and nutritional compounds that temporarily act on brain inflammation can have a profound effect. •

Methods to increase O2 to the brain can help.

Along with, or separate from specific brain-based rehab exercises (a subject for another day), these strategies to reduce stress responses, dampen brain inflammation and support blood flow to the brain, have the potential to short circuit fatigue and halt the potential nosedive into escalating brain degeneration (think alzhiemers, short term memory loss, brain fog) and restore healthy function.

When stress is involved, the first instinct of both the lay public and the majority of natural medicine practitioners is to target the adrenal glands for support (truthfully, the first instinct for most Americans and doctors is to prescribe a drug for stress or anxiety). Adrenal glandulars, minerals, B vitamins and a variety of herbs are all attempts to restore the adrenal glands, and there are times when this is a valid approach.

References:

However with brain fatigue, it’s the stress pathways in the brain that are the problem. The adrenals are simply cortisol factories, churning our adrenal hormones in response to orders from a stressed and fatigued brain. The best thing to do is support brain function and slow brain degeneration. This, in turn, will relieve the brain’s over activation of the adrenal gland.

LEARN TO LISTEN TO YOUR BODY It Has Amazing Things to Say Written By June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt, PLR

W

hen you’re experiencing a negative emotion, realize that the emotion will manifest somewhere in your body as an annoying feeling. That feeling is part of your Emotional Guidance System. We’re pretty good at determining what the emotion is, and realizing whether that emotion is of a high positive vibrational frequency or a low negative frequency. But most of us are not “in touch” with our bodies, so we may ignore the presence of a “lump in my throat” or “a prickly feeling in my chest” or whatever it may be as well as wherever we’re feeling it. We ignore it or suffer through it until the emotion itself goes away. If there is constant emotional turmoil in our lives, we may actually develop a “background” feeling of irritation that just seems to stay there. This can cause us to constantly be looking for comfort from that feeling--through pills, overeating, smoking or other comfort-seeking behaviors.

feelings, which are caused by our own emotions, we can both soothe ourselves and heal, faster and more efficiently. Sometimes you may feel unappreciated, taken for granted, ignored or unacknowledged. That hurts and may lead to other emotions and actions which are detrimental to your health. When you begin to recognize the physical “feelings” that accompany any negative emotion, you can do something about them quickly and easily, without pills or “comfort substances.” Here’s how: Sit in a quiet place and close your eyes. Relax. Take a couple of deep breaths. Search a little and get in touch with that feeling. Where is it in your body? Chest, stomach, throat, neck, back, arms, hands, legs? Found it? Pause and notice what the qualities of that feeling are. Is it a lump, a sticky feeling, a spiky feeling? Is it stuck or still, or is it churning? Is it heavy or is it just a “something?” Study that feeling until you find its quality, its description. Don’t rush. You may change your mind over and over. Take your time with this. It’s important.

It may sound silly, but that physical feeling of irritation in your body that’s caused by a negative emotion needs your attention. The relief of that feeling is almost immediate if you give it some attention. I don’t mean attempting to get rid of it through conventional means. I mean having a conversation with it. This sounds way too simple, but I assure you, it works.

When you get in touch with its qualities, quietly say “Hello” in a conversational, gentle way. Pause. Take a deep breath. Then say, “I know you’re there” like you were speaking to a friend. Pause. Take a deep breath. Say, “I acknowledge you.” Pause. Take a deep breath. Notice how it feels, and continue. Say,

As humans, we are made up of mind, body, emotions and spirit. None of these can be ignored as we need all four to soothe ourselves or to heal. By acknowledging the physical

“I know you’re trying to help me.” Pause. Take a deep breath. Say, “I appreciate that.” Pause. Take another deep breath. Say, “Thank you.” Pause. Take a deep breath and sit quietly for a moment, noticing what kind of “felt shift” you experienced around the feeling. Ninety-nine percent of the time it will have disappeared completely. If there’s a little bit of it left, do the process again or (mentally) gently wrap it up and pretend to place it in a beautiful box or basket and set it aside. Pause again. Take a deep breath then open your eyes when you’re ready and go on with your day, feeling in control, refreshed and relieved.

Leaky Gut: Part 2

One of the best things you can do to help reverse leaky gut syndrome is regular consumption of bone broth.

What to do?

Written By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D. All of these components help heal and seal the gut and promote healthy digestion, but repairing the lining of the small intestine is only one part of the solution. Another essential step that can be undertaken at the same time is to eliminate or remove the harmful bacteria, viruses and fungi that caused the damage in the first place. Conventional antibiotics will not solve the problem. In fact, they contributed to it to begin with, and they would very likely make things much worse. The compound that can do this job without causing more trouble is bio-active silver hydrosol…colloidal silver. Colloidal silver got a bad rap in modern times but it has been used for centuries in various ways for healing. When administered by someone who knows what they are doing, it is entirely safe and effective.

L

ast month, I wrote about what leaky gut is. Now, I’m going to tell you what you can do to help recover from it. The first thing I must say is that if you have severe symptoms, or have had them for a long time, you need to see a physician who knows how to deal with the allergies or auto-immune problems that leaky gut can cause. Treatment can cause worsening of symptoms for a time and it is important to know how to deal with them. One of the best things you can do to help reverse leaky gut syndrome is regular consumption of bone broth. It has been known and used in healing for millennia. Also known as “stock,” it is made by slowly boiling a chicken carcass, beef bones or chicken feet for a long time (24 to 48 hours). Spices and vegetables can be added to improve the flavor. The difference from just plain soup is that bone broth contains at least 2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar. This allows it to leach beneficial minerals such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, sulfur and trace minerals in forms that are easily absorbed, out of the bones. The other beneficial nutrient that is made available by this process is gelatin, glucosamine and chondroitin sulfates, now sold as expensive supplements for arthritis and joint pain.

The third branch of treatment to reverse leaky gut syndrome is replacing the bad bacteria with the good beneficial bacteria in both food and supplement form. This would come from cultured dairy and fermented vegetables. Some other supplements that can aid the healing are digestive enzymes, L-Glutamine, curcumin and butyric acid. The whole protocol could be summarized as Remove, Repair, Replace, and Rebalance. References: 1. Fallon, Sally. Nourishing Traditions. New Trends Publishing, Inc., 2001. 2. Kiefer D, Ali-Akbarian L. Abnormal Menstrual Periods

Painful menstruation, or dysmenorrhea, can be debilitating. Usually women experience dull aching in the lower abdomen and low back which can radiate to the thighs, moderate to severe cramping, and sometimes sharp, burning or stabbing pain. It can occur from the very first period (primary dysmenorrhea, which usually improves over time) or develop later (secondary dysmenorrhea, which often progresses.) Most of the pain is caused by unusually strong and frequent contractions of the uterine muscle, stimulated by inflammatory chemicals called prostaglandins. Strong and persistent contraction of uterine muscle decreases its blood flow and causes poor tissue oxygenation, which results in pain. Cigarette smoking has been linked with dysmenorrhea. Dysmenorrhea can also result from large blood clots that are painful to pass through the cervix. Other symptoms can include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

H

eavy or painful menstrual cycles interrupt the active lives of many women and girls, resulting in lost productivity at work and school, decreased energy, avoidance of sports, stress, anxiety and depression, and decreased self-esteem. Approximately 50 percent of women report limiting their activities and 15 percent report absenteeism from work or school. Too often individuals with this burden suffer silently and needlessly because of the belief that this is something natural women must bear. However, it is not normal to experience menses that regularly cause significant distress. The average menstrual cycle occurs every 28 days and lasts for four to seven days. Excessive menstrual flow, or menorrhagia, can be defined as bleeding that is more frequent or prolonged than usual or flow that soaks through protection in less than an hour or two, requires double protection, includes passage of clots, regularly soils clothing or sheets, causes dizziness or extreme fatigue, or results in anemia ( low blood count). Some women and girls have required blood transfusions from their “monthly visitor!”

Visit www.HBmag.com

Heavy menstrual bleeding can be due to a variety of causes. It commonly occurs with anovulatory cycles, during which a woman did not release an egg. This can occur at any time but is particularly common surrounding puberty, as well as during perimenopause, and in women and girls with polycystic ovarian syndrome. Structural problems in the uterus, most commonly uterine fibroids cause heavy flow. Fibroids are benign tumors of the uterine muscle ranging from microscopic to grapefruit sized or larger located throughout the uterine wall and inside the uterine cavity. Due to their location and rich blood supply, fibroids cause heavy and prolonged bleeding, pelvic pressure, inflammation and cramping. Polyps within the cervix or cavity can also cause abnormal bleeding and these are usually benign. Hyperplasia of the uterine glands and endometrial cancer are causes of irregular or heavy uterine bleeding as well.

NURTURE

The art of sharing Written By Allison Prater

T

eaching children to share with one another is a more complex process than one might assume, especially when it comes to toddlers. As a parent, it is easy to feel anxious, alarmed or even doubtful of our abilities when we see our young child struggling with another over the use of a toy. While our first impulse in witnessing these struggles might be to insist that our child share or wait their turn, these prompts don’t fully account for some of the deeper lessons that are available to kids in these moments. Magda Gerber, an early childhood specialist, and advocate for respectful childcare observed, “The immediate effect of share your toy, don’t touch, who had it first, and wait your turn is separating the children. I realize that might seem like a good idea when they’re struggling--none of us like to see kids uncomfortable--but isn’t our goal for playdates, playgroups and preschool to encourage children to learn to play together? Why bother to arrange social situations if we won’t allow the children to socialize in their own ways?” She goes on to say, “In the almost 20 years I’ve been observing infants and toddlers, I’ve noticed that learning to play together is exactly what the children are trying to do. However, this doesn’t happen while they’re following our directions to take turns and play separately. It’s obviously easier to separate two struggling children at the outset of a conflict. However, I feel that the earlier children learn to struggle, negotiate, and get along with others, the better off they’ll be. You may wonder how letting children struggle over a toy teaches them to get along with others. Struggle is a normal part of human relations.” The other problem that arises when we insist that children take turns or give up a toy is that it keeps their focus on the material object, rather than helping them learn to connect, empathize and engage with one another. Toddlers are learning how to have meaningful relationships with their peers, and learning how to share also involves learning complex concepts like compassion, empathy, cause and effect, some of the lessons may not even be apparent to us as parents, but they are still taking place.

Visit www.HBmag.com

24

Here are a few suggestions I’ve found really helpful when it comes to sharing struggles. I’ve also included links in the resources below to two websites that include many fantastic articles with more great suggestions. If you suspect a struggle is about to ensue, and worry that one of the children will hit or push, sit close enough, to position yourself, so that you can block if a child attempts to hit. Stay calm, and narrate objectively what is taking place, so for example, “Wow, you really want to grab that truck. Bob really wants it too. I won’t let you hit.” Stay with your child. If they get emotional, accept this calmly, acknowledge that they are upset, “you’re really upset right now.” This part can be really challenging at times. It is important to remember that you don’t have to own your child’s outbursts as a negative reflection on you as a parent. Toddlers are learning how to release powerful emotions and stress. I notice that when I can stay calm, these storms in my son tend to pass more easily, than when I allow his energy to overwhelm me. When I can stay calm, it communicates to him that he is safe, even in intense moments. Other times when observing interactions between toddlers, I have seen potential struggles dissolve into the most inventive of games. Toddlers will also share with one another without being prompted, often in surprising and adorable ways. These moments are all the more touching because they happen out of our child’s own free will.

hanksgiving is fun. You get to have turkey, mashed potatoes, and other food you will probably like. You don’t have to CELRBRATE if you don’t want to, but my family and I do. It’s fun to CELEBRATE because you spend time with your family, and you get to eat good food, with your friends too. We (my family and I) play games, card games and watch movies. Your mom or dad can make the dinner, or your grandma or grandpa, or your aunt or uncle. You should thank your families, and you should thank…THE LORD OUR GOD!!! I love how everyone thanks everyone! I thank everyone and I thank the lord (GOD) for making us, and for giving us the good food to eat. The main thing about Thanksgiving is you spending time with your family.

T

hanksgiving means that I am thankful for what I have. I am thankful for my family. I am thankful for the food on my plate and that everyone gets to eat with their families. You should be thankful for what you have. Be happy and thankful! Do you know where the Thanksgiving holiday comes from? This is a very important holiday because it teaches us that we can learn from all people. The Native American Indians taught the Quaker immigrants how to plant corn and how to prepare dry meat and have food for the cold winters. To show their gratitude, the Quakers threw a huge party, to honor their new native friends. They cooked lots of good food and played games. This is why we celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday!

Happy Thanksgiving!

BOOKREVIEW Reviewed for Healthy Beginnings By June Milligan,M.Ed.,CCHt, PLR

THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE SECRET Decoding the Law of Attraction By Travis S. Taylor, Ph.D.

I

f you’ve been reading about and following the Law of Attraction, this book will be a welcome addition to your understanding of how all this works. Dr. Taylor’s expertise in the field of quantum physics gives him the knowledge to describe the real science behind the Law of Attraction. He holds a doctorate in optical science and engineering, three Master’s Degrees in physics, astronomy and aerospace engineering and a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He writes in a friendly humorous way, which is certainly unlike what we would expect from a physicist. This work uses scientific explanations (quantum physics) to show how the Universe works and how the Law of Attraction is part of it. Physicists first got a glimpse of this in the early twenties when they realized that their experiments were turning out in accordance with their expectations. If they expected to see light as a wave, it behaved as a wave. If they expected to see it as a particle, it behaved as a particle. It could also behave as both a wave and a particle at the same time. If this makes your head hurt, don’t feel bad. It made Einstein’s head hurt too.

Visit www.HBmag.com

Dr. Taylor incorporates mystical thought from thousands of years ago, showing how far back the concepts in The Secret actually go; he makes clear that the early mystics were actually explaining some of what quantum physics today deals with: the behaviors of the tiniest particles in the universe such as electrons, protons and quarks. Plato said, “Does not like always attract like?” Jesus said, “It is done unto you as you believe.” Proverbs 4:25 (Good News Bible edition) states, “Be careful how you think. Your life is shaped by your thoughts.” And more recently, “Each and every component that makes up your life experience is drawn to you by the powerful Law of Attraction’s response to the thoughts you think and the story you tell about your life: money and financial assets; your body’s state of wellness, flexibility, size and shape; your work environment, how you are treated, work satisfaction and rewards--indeed, the very happiness of your life experience in general, is all happening because of the story that you tell,” according to Esther and Jerry Hicks from Money and the Law of Attraction. The author explains how experiments done by some of the most brilliant physicists of the twentieth century (Heisenberg, Einstein and Bohr), laid the foundation for what physicists today (Roger Penrose, Stuart Hamerhoff and Fred Allen Wolf) are learning. It seems that our brains don’t work exactly like we thought they did: just sending signals from neuron to neuron to make the necessary connections in order for us to think, create and make sense of what our five senses tell us. It seems that we may have a “quantum brain,” which means that it is actively connected to the Quantum Universe. What does that mean? Partially, it means that our brain works faster than the speed of light; that it is connected to the whole universe and that it isn’t working on one single piece of data at a time. Each piece of data, or thought, is working through many solutions at once,

attracting “coherent” (like) info from the universe through its instant connection with the universe.

...continued from page 22

Physicists explain a thought going out into the universe as being like a pebble dropped into a pond—we’ve all done this and seen the ripples that emanate from that action. They call it a Quantum Wave Function. And because the universe is full of millions of thoughts, millions of vibrational frequencies going this way and that, some property of the thought attracts “like” thoughts, conditions and situations. That’s what physics is determining now, what causes “like” thoughts to “cohere” or attract each other. They know it happens, but they aren’t sure how.

Other causes of heavy or painful cycles include ovarian cysts, infection including sexually transmitted diseases, thyroid imbalance, clotting disorders, breakthrough bleeding from birth control pills, shots, intrauterine devices, hormone replacement therapy, psychiatric and herbal medications, and severe kidney or liver disease. Endometriosis is another cause of heavy and painful menstruation in about 10 percent of women and is a condition where endometrial (menstrual sloughing) tissue is found outside of the uterus, often on the walls of the pelvic cavity, the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and even on the outer surfaces of the bladder and intestines. These islands of tissue respond hormonally, grow and shed like periods, creating inflammation, pain and scarring. This can sometimes lead to infertility or other problems due to organs sticking together (adhesions). The pain of endometriosis usually occurs in the time leading up to menstruation as well as during initial flow. Similar to endometriosis, adenomyosis causes heavy and painful menses except that the glandular tissue islands grow abnormally within the muscle wall of the uterus.

I’m sure you’ve wondered, “Where do new ideas come from? How do two or three inventors thousands of miles apart, working on the same problem, come up with the same invention?” As we imagine millions of ideas (physicists call it the Field of all Probabilities) zooming around in the universe, we can easily see how this could happen. In fact you are connected to everything in the Universal Quantum Universe! Every condition, situation and opportunity is connected to you through your focus on it. This sounds complicated, but the author makes it simple. He emphasizes that you don’t HAVE to know HOW it happens, you just have to have the mental strength to focus on what YOU want. In that way you create your own reality, which will always be different from what the guy next door creates. Ain’t free will wonderful? Dr. Taylor writes in an easy-to-understand manner, making you think you’re talking to a friend who can make any complex subject understandable. Not only understandable, but humorous.

Often a thorough history and physical exam will determine the most likely causes. Diagnostic studies vary by age and history but may include lab tests, pelvic ultrasound, uterine biopsy, hysteroscopy and laparoscopy. Any woman or girl who feels drained and hindered in her usual activities due to heavy or painful menses should visit a gynecologist for evaluation to rule out serious pathology and to consider the many available to make life more comfortable.

There is lots of science behind The Secret, and whether we understand it or not, there are scientists who do. Our job is to use it to enhance and fulfill our own lives. As more young parents like Dr. Taylor and his wife model the Law of Attraction for their children, we will gradually be able, as a world and as a culture, to understand through our own experiences, how powerful our minds really are. This book is a delight in so many ways. It’s available as a paperback online or from your local bookstore.

Turquoise: The Lucky Stone F Written By Allison Prater

or thousands of years, Turquoise spanned all cultures, prized as a symbol of wisdom, nobility and immortality. Turquoise has been considered a sacred stone among the Ancient Egyptians, Persians, Chinese, Tibetans, the Aztecs and Incas of South America, and the Native North Americans. Turquoise has been a traditional adornment meant to attract luck, protection and power. Turquoise beads dating back to 5000 B.C. have been found in Iraq, and the Egyptians were mining the stones in the Sinai in 3200 B.C. The death mask of Tutankhamun was studded with Turquoise. As were the mosaic masks dedicated to the gods, and the fabulous inlaid skulls, shields and power statues of Moctezuma, the last ruler of the Aztecs. In Tibet turquoise can be found in sacred prayer beads, adorns musical instruments, prayer wheels and bells. For nearly a thousand years, first nation people of the Americas have mined and fashioned Turquoise. This gemstone has been found in burial sites from Argentina to New Mexico. The Navajo used ground turquoise and coral to create sand paintings in order to bring an abundance of rain. Amulets in the shape of horses and sheep were kept as potent guardians against negative

magic. The Pueblo would place turquoise under the floor in offering to the Great Spirit when a house, or kiva, was built. Apache Shamans often worked with this stone, carrying it in their medicine bags. Many of these cultures honored Turquoise as the universal stone, believing their minds would become one with the universe when wearing it. Turquoise, worn on the body or used in ceremonies, often signified the god of the sky alive in the earth. Turquoise is a receptive stone, its associated element is earth and it is ruled by the planets Venus and Neptune. It is closely associated with the Great Spirit, the Buddha and the Goddess Hathor. Turquoise is said to possess many powers. It is considered a healing and protective stone that enhances courage in the wearer. It is also said to attract love, friendship, money and luck. The name Turquoise is derived from the French, pierre turquoise, meaning “Turkish stone,” because the trade routes that brought Turquoise to Europe from the mines in central Asia went through Turkey, and Venetian merchants often purchased the stone in Turkish bazaars. The Arabic name of the stone, “Fayruz” translates to “Lucky Stone.”

For centuries, Turquoise has been recognized as possessing the power to protect horse riders from injury due to falls. First used as amulets by Turkish soldiers, on their persons and attached to their bridles and trappings, it later came to be used for protection against falls of any kind. Historically, Turquoise is credited with the property of securing friendly regard. There is a traditional saying, “he, or she, who owns a Turquoise will never want for a friend.” In ancient China, a Turquoise ring was worn as a protector against all things evil. A proverb states, “Given by a loving hand it brings with it happiness and good fortune.” However, the ring can only emit protective energy if the stone was given by a true friend. Turquoise is said to attract love, it is often used to promote marital harmony and enhance communication in relationships. It is said to help the energies of two individuals blend harmoniously.

Placed on the Third Eye, it supports intuition and meditation. It is also considered beneficial for the throat chakra, supporting clear communication, speaking one’s truth, and articulating one’s deepest wisdom. Turquoise empowers us in the knowledge that in speaking from the wholeness of our being, we each have something important to contribute to the collective. References: 1. Cunningham, Scott. Tibetan Turquoise or Chinese Turquoise, is green and carries a slightly different vibration than the more vivid blue. As jewelry, it is worn by men and women alike, and considered a promise of fidelity and protectiveness to a lover or partner. When used in energy healing Turquoise is said to strengthen the meridians of the body and the subtle energy fields, enhancing communication between the physical and spiritual worlds.

Pumpkin Spice Latte

A

Written By Lissie Lyles

h, the pumpkin spice latte...where to begin. The Starbuck’s version of this drink has an almost cultish following, and has been the subject of recent debates with regard to the safety of its ingredients. Investigative blogger Foodbabe posted this list of ingredients on her website, after trying for months to get Starbucks to disclose the list of ingredients. (They don’t post the ingredients to their drink on their own website). There’s been some debate as to whether the Starbuck’s pumpkin spice latte is a cup of toxic, carcinogenic sludge, or the caloric equivalent of a melted king-sized candy bar, or both.

Let’s look at the Ingredient list: Milk, Espresso (Water, Brewed Espresso Coffee), Pumpkin Spice Flavored Sauce (Sugar, Condensed Nonfat Milk, High Fructose Corn Syrup or Sweetened Condensed Nonfat Milk (Milk, Sugar), Annatto (for color), Natural and Artificial Flavors, Caramel Color (class IV), Salt, Potassium Sorbate (preservative)), Whip Cream (Whipping Cream, Starbucks Vanilla Syrup (Sugar, Water, Natural Flavors, Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid, Caramel Color

(class IV)), Pumpkin Spice Topping: Cinnamon, Ginger, Nutmeg, Clove, Sulfites. SOY OPTION: Starbucks Organic Soy Milk (plain): Filtered Water, Organic Whole Soybeans, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Calcium Carbonate, Organic Vanilla Flavor, Natural Flavors, Sea Salt, Carrageenan, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Bicarbonate, Vitamin A Palmitate, Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), Vitamin B12, Zinc Gluconate. Starbucks Organic Soy Milk (vanilla): Filtered Water, Organic Whole Soybeans, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Calcium Carbonate, Natural Vanilla Flavors, Natural Flavors, Sea Salt, Carrageenan, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Bicarbonate, Vitamin A Palmitate, Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), Vitamin B12. A quick look at this list of ingredients reveals the latter supposition to be true, that this drink is basically candy in a cup of joe. As to the safety of the ingredients in the pumpkin spice latte, the most controversial is Caramel Color class IV, also known as 4-MEI.

From a sustainability standpoint, there are also many troubling factors in creation of this beverage. Whenever a food product is heavily processed, it involves a greater use of resources because many of the individual ingredients go through multiple stages of processing and shipping. Instead of shelling out for a high priced processed beverage, there are many imaginative, recipes for a DIY pumpkin spice latte that include ingredients that are more easily recognizable as food. A great recipe that is low sugar, actually contains pumpkin can be found here: mamanatural.com/pumpkinspice-latte

This drink is basically candy in a cup of joe.

In February 2011, the Center for Science in the Public Interest petitioned FDA to ban two types of caramel coloring used in food and beverage products, 2-methylimidazole and 4-MEI, stating that government studies showed they “caused lung, liver, or thyroid cancer or leukemia in laboratory mice or rats.” California includes 4-MEI on its “list of chemicals known to the state to cause cancer.” While there is no official federal limit for levels of 4-MEI found in foods or beverages, in January 2012, California started requiring manufacturers to put a cancer warning label on any products sold in the state that would expose consumers to more than 29 micrograms of the substance per day. The California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment has determined that amount poses a one in 100,000 risk of cancer to someone exposed daily to that level over a lifetime. The FDA maintains this ingredient is safe, Other problematic ingredients in the pumpkin spice latte include high fructose corn syrup, which has been linked to diabetes and attention disorders, and carrageenan an emulsifier that has been linked to digestive troubles.

HERBS&SPICES Green parsley is used frequently as a garnish on potato dishes, or on rice dishes such as risotto or pilaf. It compliments fish, fried chicken, lamb, goose and steaks, as well in meat or vegetable stews such as beef bourguignon, goulash or chicken paprikash. In southern and central Europe, parsley is part of bouquet garni, a bundle of fresh herbs used as an ingredient in stocks, soups and sauces. Freshly chopped green parsley is used as a topping for soups such as chicken soup, green salads, or salads such as salade Olivier, and on open sandwiches with cold cuts or pâtés. Parsley is a key ingredient in several Middle Eastern salads such as tabbouleh. Persillade is a mixture of chopped garlic and chopped parsley in French cuisine. Gremolata, a mixture of parsley, garlic and lemon zest, is a traditional accompaniment to the Italian veal stew, ossobuco alla milanese. Parsley is the main ingredient in Italian salsa verde, which is a mixed condiment of parsley, capers, anchovies, garlic and bread soaked in vinegar. It is an Italian custom to serve it with bollito misto or fish. In England, parsley sauce is a roux-based sauce, commonly served over fish or gammon.

Parsley

Parsley grows best in moist, well-drained soil, with full sun. It grows best between 22 to 30 °C, and is usually grown from seed. Germination is slow, taking four to six weeks. Parsley attracts several species of wildlife. Some swallowtail butterflies use parsley as a host plant for their larvae; their caterpillars are black and green striped with yellow dots, and will feed on parsley for two weeks before turning into butterflies. Bees and other nectar-feeding insects also visit the flowers. Birds such as the goldfinch feed on the seeds.

Written By Allison Prater

P

Parsley is a highly nutritious plant and is a great source of Flavonoids and Antioxidants; especially luteolin, folic acid, vitamin K, vitamin C, and vitamin A.

etroselinum crispum, or Parsley, is a member of the family Apiaceae. It is native to the central Mediterranean region of southern Italy, Algeria and Tunisia. It has been naturalized elsewhere in Europe, and widely cultivated as an herb, a spice, and a vegetable. In the US, we are familiar with leaf parsley, but its close cousin, root parsley is a popular ingredient in central and eastern European cuisine.

Excessive consumption of parsley should be avoided by pregnant women. It is safe in normal food quantities, but large amounts may have uterotonic effects. A great way to enjoy the fresh flavor of parsley, while taking advantage of its antioxidant properties, is to add it to one’s drinking water. Fresh parsley can be chopped and frozen in an ice-cube tray. The individual cubes can be popped into a glass of water and savored.

Leaf parsley grows as a biennial, and in the first year it forms a rosette of leaflets and a taproot, used as a food store over the winter. In the second year, it flowers and produces small thin seeds. Another type of parsley is grown as a root vegetable, the Hamburg root parsley (P. crispum radicosum group, syn. P. crispum var. tuberosum). This type of parsley produces a much thicker taproot than those cultivated for their leaves. In central and eastern Europe it is used in soups and stews, or simply eaten raw, as a snack (similar to carrots). Although root parsley looks similar to the parsnip, its taste is quite different from it.

In central and eastern Europe and in western Asia, many dishes are served with fresh green, chopped parsley sprinkled on top.
