Recent medical studies have shown that many people may not receive enough vitamin D in their daily lives. Our bodies can make vitamin D3, but only when our skin is exposed to sunlight under the proper conditions. This production is dependent on the season, where we live and the time of day. Even using sunscreen may reduce the body’s production of vitamin D. Medical studies continue to show that adequate vitamin D intake helps in the development and maintenance of bones and teeth. Carlson Vitamin D soft gels are a great way to ensure that you and your loved ones receive the vitamin D you need.

EDITOR’S NOTE Plan a weekend getaway to a great destination in Ontario

this spring. There are amazing wineries, fabulous golf courses and heart-thumping views at Federal and Provincial parks. Breaking vacation time up into four or five long weekends and spending it in different locations offers more chances throughout the year to rejuvenate. Local vacations also support the local economy. Not sure where to go next? This issue we have launched our Great Destinations section where we will feature premium spas and resorts, travel and adventure, and fine dining. During April, volunteers across Ontario will be working together to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society with the sale of fresh daffodils and daffodil pins. For cancer awareness and education during this month, we’ve included several articles on the best of integrated cancer care, cancer prevention and screening. Planning a wedding or paying for one soon? I’ve included a Green Wedding article this issue with great ideas on how to create a dream wedding that’s eco-friendly. Green choices help the environment but can also help keep the budget on track and allow a little splurging on the things you really want, like – fabulous food. Speaking of fabulous food, in our Food Passions section we’ve included some mouth-watering Italian rolled sole and stuffed artichoke recipes this issue. Buon appetito! P.S. (My daughter Evelyn Anne Cousins was born on February 15th, a healthy 8 pounds, 3 ounces, one day after her due date.) Yours in health and happiness,

CANCER CARE

Integrative Oncology for More Effective

Cancer Treatment

By Jill Shainhouse, ND, FABNO There is a growing interest in implementing naturopathic therapies alongside traditional treatments with regards to treating cancer. The Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians (OncANP) exists to help provide regulation for naturopathic doctors treating cancer patients. OncANP has also developed a board certification program for ND’s wanting to specialize in the area of naturopathic cancer treatment. The goal of a board certified Naturopathic Oncologist is to provide evidence-based, scientifically sound individualized care.

NUTRITION AND SUPPLEMENTATION There are many “nutraceuticals” or natural supplements that have been shown to have efficacy in treating a variety of cancers. When treating an individual, the specific pathology of that patient’s cancer and the pharmaceuticals for that patient are taken into consideration before any natural prescription is made. Attention is paid to specific pathways that the drugs and supplements utilize, so that there is no accidental increase or decrease in the metabolism of a drug. If there is an overall benefit for a particular supplement to be used alongside a specific drug, the two are prescribed simultaneously. For example, studies have shown that taking L-glutamine in large doses can prevent chemotherapy induced peripheral 8 HEALTHY DIRECTIONS April/May 2012

neuropathy (numbness and pain in the hands and feet) without compromising the effectiveness of the drug.

INTRAVENOUS THERAPY High dose vitamin C therapy, given as an intravenous infusion, is not a new therapy and one that has been studied for quite some time. It’s main mechanism of action is not as an “antioxidant” as some may think, but actually as a cell killing “pro-oxidant.” The anti-tumor effects of ascorbate are based on its ability to initiate “apoptosis” a phenomenon known as programmed cell death. Recent studies have found that this therapy may improve patient quality of life and overall outcome when combined with certain chemotherapy drugs.

HERBAL MEDICINE The use of plant compounds to improve patient outcomes from a variety of different angles is possible. Ginger is a wellstudied herb that has been shown to reduce the adverse event of nausea and vomiting in a variety of chemotherapeutic regimes. Specific mushroom compounds such as AHCC or activated hexose correlated compound have been shown to support the immune system. Prevention of an undesirable drastic drop in white cell count during treatment has also been attributed to AHCC. Curcumin is one of the most heavily

HDApril/May2012_HealthyDirectionsTemplate 12-03-28 3:06 PM Page 9

studied extracts. Studies show that high doses of curcumin are required to have the maximum benefit and achieve blood levels that can impact cancer cells. New advances in the world of natural pharmacy have found preparations combining the curcumin extract with a fatty molecule have the greatest impact on cancer cells. Research has shown that curcumin can suppress tumour initiation, continued growth and spread. It is also a potent anti-inflammatory. Curcumin can reduce a phenomenon known as chemo-resistance which happens when a chemotherapy drug initially works well and subsequently the tumour cells begin to outsmart the drug. Curcumin has been shown to improve the efficacy of radiation therapy by making the cancer cells more susceptible to the effects of radiation, which is known as radiosensitization.

HOMEOPATHY Homeopathic remedies are used on a case by case basis and can be used two different ways. They can be prescribed for acute conditions or adverse effects of chemotherapy and radiation. They can also be used from a constitutional perspective to treat the overall picture that a patient presents with. Some hospitals have done research on specific homeopathic remedies and combinations of Homeopathic remedies. One study was done in collaboration with MD Anderson Cancer Center on the particular remedy, Ruta 6 with a specific type of brain tumour called a glioma.

CHINESE MEDICINE AND ACUPUNCTURE Acupuncture and chinese herbs have been used for centuries. Acupuncture has been clinically proven to help patients deal with a wide range conditions stemming from both chemotherapy and radiation. In reviewing the literature, it appears that acupuncture protocols are effective in treating everything from hot flashes induced by specific drugs causing hormonal change to nausea. Acupuncture has also proved quite effective at helping to manage cancerrelated pain. Jill Shainhouse, ND, FABNO is a naturopathic doctor with additional board certification in oncology. She practices in the Bayview and Eglinton area and also supervises interns at the CCNM teaching clinic on the oncology shift. Each Stage of Life Plays a Role in

Better Bone Health

By Amel Oudhini, ND When it comes to bone health, one point that needs to be emphasized is that this is an issue that must be considered in all stages of life. Much attention has been brought to osteoporosis in the last few years, and deservingly so. It is a serious and debilitating disease that is difficult to treat once it has been diagnosed. While that may come across as a grim reality, the good news is that prevention is far easier. But with prevention must come awareness and education. Typically when we think about osteoporosis, one conjures an image of a fragile elderly woman. True, the greatest demographic for osteoporosis are older postmenopausal women, but let’s take a walk through life and see why bone health and osteoporotic prevention should occur from much earlier on.

A GENETIC LINK One of the greatest predisposing risk factors is genetics. A key medical intake question to ask is whether there is a first degree relative with a history of osteoporotic fractures. Now, while we may not have control over our genetics, maintaining healthy bones becomes a good initial determinant of health for future generations.

BONE HEALTH STARTS BEFORE BIRTH The next step, or arguably the first, is the fetal environment. Studies indicate that less than optimal prenatal health could trigger “osteoporotic programming”. What this suggests is that developmental origins of osteoporosis begin with intrauterine life. 10 HEALTHY DIRECTIONS April/May 2012

HDApril/May2012_HealthyDirectionsTemplate 12-03-28 3:06 PM Page 11

PEAK BONE MASS IN THE LATE 20S Moving from infancy into young adulthood, the critical developmental milestone is reaching peak bone mass. When it comes to bone growth, the normal development of bone is a dynamic remodeling process between building up and breaking down. During this stage, our bones undergo more “building” until the peak is reached in our late 20s. As a result, it is essential the body has all its requirements to achieve the greatest bone density as a slow but steady decline ensues thereon after. Another point to be stressed is up until this point, whether male or female, bone loss after peak bone density is a universal phenomenon. Therefore, in the event of these developmental stages occurring in less-than par conditions, both could face osteoporosis down the line.

When it comes to the hormonal piece, soy foods have been shown to have a pro-estrogenic effect on bones and could be something to consider in the menopausal stages of life. Furthermore, soy foods are a rich source of calcium. Lastly, one of the most important environmental strategies is to get out and enjoy the sunlight! A striking percentage of Canadians are deficient in vitamin D. Although no longer covered by healthcare, it would be wise to get levels checked by your healthcare practitioner. By highlighting simple strategies to help promote bone health, a huge impact could be made towards the prevention of osteoporosis. Furthermore, while its onset commonly occurs in the later stages of life, it’s important to remember and be aware of the developmental stages of bones so that you can enjoy a happy, healthy, active life for many years to come. Amel practices at Aspire Health, a multi-disciplinary clinic in Bloor West Village. She would be happy to help you with any of your health concerns and would gladly set up a free introductory consult if you would like to know more or have any questions.

ESTROGEN FALLS IN MENOPAUSE The next major stage in life that must be considered when it comes to bone health is menopause. The precipitous fall in estrogen results in a dramatic increase in bone loss of up to 30%, especially in the first five years of menopause. While supplementation with vitamins and minerals at this stage does show improvement in bone density, as well as, a reduction in the risk of fractures, its effects are small. So while an improvement can be attained with nutritional support, implementing change should ideally occur before a diagnosis of osteoporosis has been made.

SIMPLE STRATEGIES FOR SETTING A GOOD FOUNDATION FOR STRONG BONES Calcium. Recently there is a lot of emphasis placed on ensuring adequate intake. While calcium is certainly essential for bone health, osteoporosis is much more than a calcium deficiency. It is a multifactorial disorder that involves lifestyle, nutritional, hormonal, and environmental factors. So, when it comes to prevention and management, one needs a treatment plan that covers all these aspects. In terms of lifestyle factors, exercise is the most important determinant of bone health! In a study with postmenopausal women, one hour of physical activity three times a week managed to slow bone loss and actually increase bone mass. Conversely, a sedentary lifestyle doubles the rate of calcium excretion from the body. Additional lifestyle habits to consider are stress, coffee, alcohol, smoking, sugar, and soft drinks. These all negatively impact bone health; so, trying to reduce them or eliminate them is important. When considering dietary recommendations to promote bone health, green leafy vegetables are key. These are excellent sources of calcium, vitamin K and boron - all main players for strong bones. Other great foods are broccoli, cabbage, spinach, green peas, lettuce, asparagus, oats and whole grains.

Thoughtful Considerations for an Eco-Friendly

Dream, Green Wedding r

locations. Consider botanical gardens or other green outdoor locations like parks as potential venues. For indoor locations, get off the grid by having the event run on green energy, like wind power or solar panels.

A GREENER VENUE

Web-based invitations are a natural for green weddings, but you don’t necessarily have to forego the traditional keepsake. Consider paper made from 100% postconsumer fibers manufactured using green energy sources. Fibers like bamboo and hemp also offer unique and lovely alternatives. Use a website or e-mail for RSVPs or use postcard RSVPs to eliminate envelope reply cards. Ordering invitations online? “Most companies are American; so, beware extra

When thinking about where to host, consider first where the majority of guests will be travelling from. Then, try to find a central location. The less travel for guests, the less fuel consumed. When choosing a venue, take into consideration any commitments to the environment they may have, such as green building design, environmentally-friendly practices or energy saving measures. Some resorts or venues offer natural, outdoor 12 HEALTHY DIRECTIONS April/May 2012

fees, particularly the brokerage fee charged by courier companies that adds up to a 30% surcharge on top of regular government taxes,” suggests Zerlene Mekdeci, PMP, WPIC, Director, Impressario Events www.impressarioevents.ca, “Find a Canadian dealer who knows about import charges and offers US Post shipping to avoid the brokerage.”

TRANSPORTATION Carpooling or shuttle-bus pick up and drop-off from hotels to venue can help reduce emissions, and provides a designated driver for the festivities. Having the ceremony and reception at the same location or locations within waking distance, also eliminates the need for extra driving.

WEDDING FAVOURS Giving sweet almonds as a wedding favour symbolizing fertility, happiness, health, wealth and longevity is an Italian, Greek and Middle-Eastern tradition. Consider buying organic almonds in honey or make your own. Other eco-friendly wedding favours are fairtrade chocolate, local organic wine or honey, flower seeds, potted plants or tree seedlings.

DECOR AND FLOWERS Purchasing flowers from local farmers, reduces carbon emissions. Choosing organic growers reduces pesticide and preservative use. Some brides enjoy growing flowers for their wedding. Potted flowers can make a great take home keepsake that keep blooming in family and friends homes and gardens. When lighting the night, skip paraffin or petroleum based candles in place of beeswax or soy candles, which are biodegradable and do not produce carcinogens or toxins as they burn. Rent instead of buy. Everything from archways, napkins, plates, tablecloths, tulle, vases and accessories can be rented instead of purchased to avoid extra cost and waste.

CATERING AND CAKE Think local, fresh and organic. Choose your menu based on the time of year and the local selection of fruit, vegetables and meat available. This supports local farmers and reduces carbon emissions from transporting long distances. Seek an organic cake maker. Serve local organic wines and locally brewed organic beers.

THE ECO-DRESS Choose a dress and bridal party attire made from natural materials, such as organic silk and have a dress made, or have a vintage dress modified to fit. A wedding dress doesn’t have to be new. “Buy a preowned wedding dress or sell your new gown after your wedding,“ suggests Josie Daga, the founder of PreOwnedWeddingDresses.com, “Either way, you’ll save 30-60% (or more!) on the cost of a dress – and help the planet at the same time!” Most grooms and groomsmen rent their entire outfit from the tuxedo to shoes which is a fantastic way to reduce and reuse. Have the bridesmaids pick their own dresses, they’ll be more likely to wear it again then, or ask them to wear a dress they already own.

RINGS Seek conflict-free, ethical diamonds. During the 1990s and the first decade of this century, hundreds of thousands of people were killed in wars fuelled by diamonds, across Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Liberia and Sierra Leone. Consider vintage. “Beautiful vintage jewelry is a great choice for the big day. Choosing to go with an antique engagement ring or bands brings the craftsmanship, and uniqueness of an era full of elegance to your day,” suggests Todd Durnan, photographer, TJ Durnan Photography, www.tjdurnan.com, “Timeless, beautiful designs last forever.”

PHOTOGRAPHER Ask for digital proofs to reduce paper and toxic chemical use prior to choosing the must have framable favourites. Create an on-line web album to share with friends and family.

GIFTS If you are going to be buying gifts for the people in your wedding party, consider low impact options, such as specialty foods and wines. Consider local organic wine, fair trade chocolate or coffee or gifts from your favourite charity’s product line. Ask guests to give a donation to your favourite charity in lieu of a wedding gift. Or, ask for cash donations to your “honeymoon fund”. Most couples getting married nowadays, don’t need the traditional home start-up gifts. HEALTHY DIRECTIONS April/May 2012 13

CARCIOFI RIPIENI, STUFFED ARTICHOKES Stuffed artichokes was the very first contorno that my grandmother taught me to make. If you like, instead of making the breadcrumbs yourself with the bread slices, olive oil, parsley, and garlic, you can substitute 2 cups store-bought Italian breadcrumbs.

INGREDIENTS 8 large artichokes 1 lemon, cut in half 4 slices of bread 3⁄4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 3⁄4 cup fresh Italian parsley leaves, chopped 4 cloves garlic, chopped Sea salt Freshly ground black pepper

DIRECTIONS Cut off the stems of the artichokes so you are able to stand them up. Remove and discard the tough outer leaves. Cut the sharp tips off the remaining leaves with scissors. Slice off about 1/2 inch from the top of each artichoke. Open the artichokes gently with your hands. Remove the fuzzy chokes with a knife or melon baller. Wash the artichokes under cold running water. Rub the lemon halves all over the cut portions of the artichokes to prevent discoloring. Set the artichokes, cut part down, on paper towels. If you’re making your own breadcrumbs, remove the crusts from the bread. Chop the bread into small pieces and place in a medium bowl. Add 1/2 cup of the olive oil and the parsley, garlic, and sea salt and pepper to taste. Mix together well. Work the breadcrumbs between the leaves and into the centers of the artichokes. Stand the artichokes up in a saucepan just large enough to accommodate them. Pour 1 inch of water into the pan. Drizzle the remaining 1/4 cup olive oil over the artichokes. Cook the artichokes over medium heat, covered, for 40 to 60 minutes, depending on their size. The artichokes will turn bright green. If the water evaporates, add a little more. When the artichokes are cooked, you want to have 4 to 5 tablespoons sauce left in the pan. If you have too much liquid, remove the artichokes and boil it down. Spoon the sauce over the artichokes and serve. Excerpted from “Whatever Happened to Sunday Dinner,” by Lisa Caponigri © 2012 Sterling Publishing

INSALATA DI ANTIPASTI ANTIPASTO SALAD INGREDIENTS 1 cup marinated artichoke hearts, cut in half, or quarters if large. 8 thin slices genoa salami, each slice cut into four pieces 1 piece (1/4 pound) provolone cheese, cubed 1 cup pitted black olives 1 red onion chopped 2 fennel bulbs, trimmed of stalks and chopped 1 head romaine lettuce, chopped 1⁄4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar Sea salt, freshly ground black pepper

DIRECTIONS In a large salad bowl, combine the artichoke hearts, salami, provolone, olives, onion, fennel, and romaine. Sprinkle with the olive oil and vinegar, season to taste with sea salt and pepper, and toss well. FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Food Allergies & Organics

Organically Grown, Close to Home “Yorkshire Valley Farms produces the finest tasting chickens—juicy and flavourful, with a flavour very similar to that of chickens back home in India. They are simply perfect for cooking butter chicken, you really get the true taste of this dish by using Yorkshire Valley Farms chicken!” —

By Jodi Koberinski, Organic Council of Ontario Food allergies, food sensitivities, dietary illnesses… it seems more and more people are talking these days about allergies and sensitivities than ever before. Today, there are more persistent toxins and chemicals in the environment than ever before. A food allergy creates an immune response resulting in skin, lung and anaphylactic reactions of varying degrees including death. A food sensitivity is an adverse reaction to a food that other people can safely eat, and includes food allergies, food intolerances, and chemical sensitivities. Chemical sensitivities are adverse reactions to chemicals that occur naturally in, or are added to, foods. This area of nutrition is poorly understood as we have few studies that investigate. So how does “organic” fit in the picture? The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) began a project in 2009 to investigate the food allergies and novel plant proteins generated through GMO technology. The research is ongoing. Questions are also raised by scientists about GMOs and the gut and the role of these changes in food sensitivities. People have sensitivities to pesticides. As they should! Pesticides are designed to kill life. While as much of 98% of tested foods report below exposure limits, the testing regime is inadequate and the exposure levels are based on lab, not life conditions. Children in particular are at risk for pesticide exposure. According to the EPA, “Pesticides may harm a developing child by blocking the absorption of important food nutrients necessary for normal healthy growth.” Lack of nutrients are one cause of food sensitivity. In some cases pesticide residue may not “cause” the sensitivity, the use of the pesticide acts on the plant in such a way as to reduce its nutritional value which may lead to problems like food sensitivities. Organic food is grown without the use of chemical pesticides, which can chelate nutrients away from plants. Throughout the food chain, buying organic is the only way to limit exposure to pesticides in your food. For example, organic chicken is fed grain that is grown with the same care and attention with which your organic vegetables are grown. Organic farmers don’t use NPK fertilizer. They follow fertility practices that enhance soil nutrition. Our environment is filled with persistent toxins that challenge our immune systems and affect our internal physiology. The various chemicals used to grow and process our foods are not tested for their interactivity. So, individually each may prove benign below certain limits, but we have barely explored how these chemicals interact in combination or with chronic exposure. As we can’t say with certainty what a truly safe level of exposure is, it would be prudent to choose to avoid exposure all together when possible. Organic food gives us that choice!

Hockley Valley Resort Hockley Valley Resort first opened its doors in 1985. Under the leadership of the Adamo family, the resort evolved from a small 28-room inn to an iconic year-round hotel, golf and ski destination. Today, Hockley features 104 luxury rooms and suites, 14 meeting rooms, an 8,000 square foot, full-service spa, as well as an 18-hole championship golf course, 15 downhill ski runs and 2 snowboard terrain parks. President John Paul Adamo (previously the resort’s Executive Chef) has focused on turning Hockley Valley Resort into a popular culinary destination. Adamo’s vision was inspired by authenticity and a traditional, farmto-table philosophy rooted in a commitment to the best in regional food and drink.

THE GARDENS AT HOCKLEY One of the most important changes is a lush, four-acre fruit and vegetable garden right on the property under the care of a fulltime gardener. The garden supplies 80 per cent of the produce for the resort’s restaurants, with additional menu ingredients sourced from local farmers and food purveyors, such as Caledon Farms, Reid’s Farms, Beretta Organic Farms and Big Tusk Wild Boar Reserve. The resort’s recent makeover also includes the addition of a six acre vineyard on top of the hill, an outdoor kitchen with a wood fired oven, a Garden Fare produce stand on Sundays from June through October, and three new restaurants: the casual lounge 85, the lobby wine bar Babbo, and the new signature restaurant cabin. Hockley’s growing culinary team includes industry veterans like Executive Chef Alex Johnston, Chef de Cuisine Michael

Potters, and Director of Restaurants and Sommelier Corey Ladouceur.

GREEN INITIATIVES Hockley is committed to reducing their carbon footprint and becoming the “greenest” resort in Ontario, as demonstrated through the implementation of various programs and services that promote the basics reduce, reuse and recycle throughout the property. Hockley’s compost program diverts 70 tonnes of waste from landfills and turns it into reusable compost. River testing commissioned by the resort and executed by the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority helps maintain clean streams and waterways throughout the property. Hockley’s round source heat and cooling system supplies common space areas with air conditioning and heat. In-room programs include energy-saving lighting, recycling bins and water-saving optional daily towel/sheet laundering. Installation of GOSLYN system at the resort separates fat, oil and grease and diverts 99.6 per cent from filtering into septic systems, resulting in a recyclable by-product for the bio-diesel industry. Guest room amenities are organic, with minimal fragrance and preservatives and biodegradable packaging Hockley Valley Resort is located in the Hills of Headwaters, the highest elevation in Southern Ontario. The region is the birthplace of four major river systems: the Nottawasaga, the Credit, the Humber, and the Grand. The river systems have made the Hills of Headwaters a rich and bountiful agritourism destination. To learn more about Hockley Valley Resort please visit: www.hockley.com HEALTHY DIRECTIONS April/May 2012 19

Reduce the Risk of

Breast Cancer

Know the Early Warning Signs WHAT DO PERIOD PROBLEMS, UTERINE FIBROIDS, OVARIAN CYSTS, BREAST LUMPS, ABNORMAL PAPS AND HORMONAL ACNE HAVE TO DO WITH BREAST CANCER RISK? By Lorna Vanderhaeghe, MS Most women believe that family history or genetics plays the biggest role in developing breast cancer yet less than 10% off all breast cancers have anything to do with genetics. Over 90 percent of breast cancers are caused by environmental toxins, diet and stress – meaning it is preventable. We get years of warning signs that our hormones are out of balance which may be putting us at risk of developing breast cancer yet few women are advised that hormone imbalance puts them at risk. Heavy periods, abnormal PAPs, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, breast lumps, a thick uterine lining are all conditions related to too much estrogen also called estrogen dominance. Estrogen is a powerful hormone which can contribute to abnormal cell growth in the body. And it is not just the estrogen made by our body that is causing the increased risk of breast cancer but we are also being bombarded by man-made estrogens in our environment that are increasing our risk of estrogen related cancers. These man-made estrogens are found in cosmetics containing parabens and phthalates; plastics, pesticides, dry cleaning chemicals, farmed-fish, the birth control pill, HRT and other drugs, commercially-produced meat and dairy products. Eating soy foods, coffee and alcohol also increase estrogen levels in the body.

Cancer Society Warning In 2009 the Cancer Society sent out a warning about milk thistle and breast cancer whereby they recommended women with breast cancer avoid milk thistle due to proliferation of cancer cells. In 2010 another study showed women who took milk thistle every day had elevated prolactin levels causing breast swelling and breast pain. Milk thistle is an excellent liver support nutrient but this new research shows it should not be taken daily.

BREAST CANCER RATES Back in 1960 one in 20 women developed breast cancer — today it is 1 in 8. Although we are raising a lot of money for breast cancer awareness and treatment, few women know what they can do to reduce their risk of breast cancer. My maternal grandmother died of breast cancer and reversing the rates of breast cancer is my goal.

NUTRIENTS TO PREVENT BREAST CANCER There are nutrients that have been researched to reduce our risk of breast cancer. The reason the Cancer Society advises you to eat broccoli is because cruciferous vegetables contain powerful breast cancer preventive nutrients. But what they don’t tell you is that you would have to eat 10 cups of them a day to get a protective effect. There are many nutrients that can help reduce the risk of abnormal cell growth. These nutrients include Indole-3Carbinol (I3C), DIM, d-glucarate, green tea extract, rosemary, curcumin and sulforaphane. These potent nutrients have been shown to keep your estrogen levels balanced, and to stop abnormal cell growth along with halting the conversion of your good estrogen into the bad cancer-causing estrogen. Not only do these nutrients have the ability to reduce your risk of breast cancer but they also stop abnormal cell growth in conditions like uterine fibroids, polyps, abnormal cervical cells, ovarian cysts, a thickened uterine lining but so much more. These ingredients when taken in combination can balance your hormones naturally and make periods effortless, reduce PMS and halt acne. Women today are proactive and they want to prevent cancers. The research suggests that simply taking the nutrients above while reducing stress and eliminating environmental hormones we will be able to start reversing the rates of breast cancer back to the 1960 rate. Lorna Vanderhaeghe, MS, is Canada's leading women's health expert. NATURAL BEAUTY Heal Viral and Bacterial Skin Problems with

Herbs and Vitamins By Deborah Jacobs Wagner The skin is the largest organ in the body, and in many ways, the most sensitive. It responds to the environment, toxicity, our diet, glandular changes affecting the immune system, and certainly, to stress. To support good skin health, all of the above issues must be addressed. The use of natural medicine, namely, the coordinated use of herbs and vitamins has been a widely accepted therapy, both preventively and in the process of healing viral and bacterial skin problems. The principal skin problems that can affect most people, at some times in their lives are one of the forms of acne, teenage acne or adult, onset rosacea, all types of herpes, especially cold sores, psoriasis and eczema. In order to successfully overcome these skin issues, it is essential to target the root cause and address all the triggers of the outbreak, from the inside.

CLEANSE THE SKIN, THE LIVER AND THE BLOOD OF TOXINS AND BACTERIA Herbs have been used for thousands of years to safely promote internal cleansing. Dandelion root cleanses the liver and the blood of toxins and balances the skin pH levels. It improves the function of the kidneys, pancreas, spleen and stomach. Sarsaparilla root cleanses the blood of impurities. It is useful for hives, nervous system disorders and psoriasis. It promotes excretion of fluids and increases energy.

BALANCE THE BODY’S CHEMISTRY AND NERVOUS SYSTEM, SINCE STRESS AND IMBALANCE ARE HUGE TRIGGERS OF AN OUTBREAK Stress has a very negative effect on the health and clarity of our skin. L-Tyrosine is an amino acid, neuro-transmitter, and is useful to reduce the skin's absorption of stress. Stress often contributes to pre-existing skin conditions. L-Tyrosine also effectively combats the herpes virus which is the root cause of cold sores.

ADDRESS CIRCULATION AND INFLAMMATION IN THE SKIN LAYERS Healing skin layers and balancing the pH of the skin is essential to obtaining clear, healthy skin. Beta carotene is necessary for the repair and maintenance of skin and mucous membranes. It also enhances the immune system. Vitamin E helps to prevent cell damage, improves circulation and repairs tissues. Selenium is an antioxidant, it works synergistically with vitamin E to protect tissues and cell membranes. It is a predominantly important protector of blood cells, heart, liver and lungs.

BUILDING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM SO THE BODY IS HEALTHY TO FIGHT OFF FUTURE OUTBREAKS Once our skin is healthy and clear, we want to keep it that way. Astragulus root protects the immune system, aids in the adrenal gland function and digestion. Ligustrum stimulates the immune system, decreases inflammation and protects the liver. Echinacea is good for the immune system and lymphatic systems, and combats inflammation caused by bacterial and viral infections.

It’s that time of year when the snow starts to melt and spring allergy season begins. It is estimated that 50 million North Americans are affected with seasonal allergies. An allergic reaction occurs when the immune system overreacts to a benign trigger. Common springtime allergens include pollens, dust mites, animal dander and moulds. When the immune system reacts to an allergen, it produces the molecule immunoglobulin E (IgE). IgE is responsible for the release of histamine that results in inflammation of the mucus membranes and causes allergy symptoms. Common allergy symptoms include: itching, swelling, sneezing, and excessive mucus production of the eyes, ears, nose and throat. Naturopathic medicine offers many options in the prevention and treatment of seasonal allergies.

NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS 24 HEALTHY DIRECTIONS April/May 2012

Diets deficient in vitamins A, C, D, E and the minerals selenium and zinc have been linked to an

increased prevalence in seasonal allergies. Increasing these nutrients through food or supplementation can prevent allergy symptoms by decreasing the inflammatory process of the immune system. Quercetin, found in fruits and vegetables, can be useful in treating allergies because it inhibits the release of histamine.

PROBIOTICS Probiotics are supplements containing live bacteria found to be beneficial to digestive and immune health. Lactobacillus and bifidobacterium species are the most common. Probiotic supplementation can be beneficial for decreasing the overactive immune response which causes allergies.

OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS Omega-3 fatty acids have strong antiinflammatory effects on the immune system thus, supplementation may be useful for management of allergies.

BOTANICAL MEDICINE Butterbur (Petasites hybridus) This herb is beneficial for reducing allergic rhiniti due to its decongestant and anti-histamine properties. Eyebright (Euphrasia officinalis) This herb’s antiinflammatory actions and ability to dry up mucus are beneficial particularly for allergic eye symptoms, which it is named for. Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) Traditionally known as the ‘King of the Mucous Membranes’ for its ability to treat infections of the sinuses, nose, mouth, throat, digestive and urinary tract. Goldenseal contains the antimicrobial ingredient berberine making it a great herb for combined sinus infection and allergy symptoms. Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) Licorice decreases inflammation and soothes irritated tissues. Be cautious with licorice because it significantly elevates blood pressure. Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) This herb, known for its beneficial effects on the liver, contains anti-inflammatory ingredients proven helpful at alleviating allergic rhinitis. Pineapple (Ananas comosus) Bromelain, a natural antiinflammatory, is extracted from pineapple is available in supplement form usually in combination with quercetin19.

anti-histamine actions and ability to dry up mucus10,20.

TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE (TCM) AND HOMEOPATHY TCM and homeopathy are other useful systems of medicine utilized by naturopathic doctors in the treatment of seasonal allergies. Both systems of medicine evaluate a person’s physical, mental and emotional symptoms to determine a pattern of imbalance. Using acupuncture, Chinese herbs and homeopathic remedies, naturopathic doctors restore balance to the immune system. There are a variety of natural medicine approaches

available to prevent and treat seasonal allergies. These can be used alone or in combination with conventional treatments. Always speak to your primary healthcare provider before starting any new treatment to make sure it is right for you. Ellen Simone is a homeopathic and naturopathic doctor with a family wellness practice in Ottawa, Ontario. CANCER SCREENING Breast Cancer Screening Essential to

Save Young Lives

By Alexander Mostovoy, HD, DHMS, BCCT Younger women generally do not consider themselves to be at risk for breast cancer. Statistics however show that breast cancer is the most common cause of death in women aged 35-54 and the incidence continues to rise. About a quarter of all breast cancers diagnosed this year will be diagnosed in women before menopause. We have also observed this increase at our clinic in women under the age of 50.

WHY IS BREAST CANCER IN YOUNGER WOMEN DIFFERENT? Younger women generally have denser breast tissue than in older women. By the time a lump is felt in a younger woman’s breast the cancer is usually in an advanced stage and therefore is less likely to be treated effectively. Routine screening with 26 HEALTHY DIRECTIONS April/May 2012

mammography is offered to women 50 and over. Screening younger women with mammography has not been effective. Denser breast tissue, present in younger women, does not bode well with X-ray mammography. In cases where the patient has Grade III or IV density of the breasts, the effectiveness of mammography screening drops below 50%. Younger women have a higher level of hormonal activity that leads to a more aggressive cancer that responds poorly to treatment. Many women assume that they are too young to get cancer and tend to dismiss a lump as a harmless cyst while some health care providers also dismiss breast lumps as cysts and adopt a ‘wait and see’ approach.

HIGHER RISK FACTORS FOR YOUNGER WOMEN • Medical radiation exposure especially exposure at younger age • Family history of breast cancer, on the maternal side (mother, sister, aunt) • Recent use of oral contraceptives • Genetic mutation involving BRCA1/BRCA2 • Excessive alcohol consumption • Diet, specifically high levels of fat • Early age at menarche and menstrual irregularity • Shift work and insomnia • Medications, antihypertensive, synthetic estrogens and thyroid medication

LACK OF SCREENING The high prevalence rate among younger women may reflect the lack of routine screening and due to low compliance of Breast self Examination (BSE) among this age group. Nonetheless, an effective way of screening is available in the form of medical infrared thermography. Thermography becomes essential in helping many young women identify who is at a higher risk of developing breast cancer by assessment of how the breast functions. By identifying a high risk group early we can follow this group more vigilantly and when necessary escalate to other forms of testing which would involve structural tests like, Ultrasound, Mammography, and MRI. Once the initial baseline is established it is possible to track future changes in the breast tissue and use all subsequent examination results as an early warning system. According to a number of researchers, a persistent abnormal thermogram is thought to be “the single greatest indicator of breast cancer risk” and

is considered 10 times more important than a positive family history for the disease. Because physiological changes over time are known to precede morphological changes, an abnormal thermogram can often be the first warning sign of an increased risk for breast cancer. Different factors may be contributing to a high risk (abnormal) thermogram, such as: hormonal imbalance, early angiogenesis (proliferation of blood vessels), lymphatic swellings and poor function, thyroid dysfunction or other endocrine disorders, environmental toxins, emotional stress, just to name a few; these are important contributors to breast disease and malignancy and are not detected by mammography or ultrasound as these factors do not appear as structural changes.

CAN BREAST CANCER BE PREVENTED? According to The World Health Organization 70% of all cancers can be prevented. Every woman should know her risk level for developing breast cancer. With proper risk assessment, that includes

different testing modalities, the patient is able to determine her risk factors and develop an action plan on how to improve the breast tissue or even reverse the existing trend. The current mainstream screening strategy is not applicable to younger women, as it does not identify who is at risk before it is too late. Medical infrared thermography should be added to every woman's regular breast health care because the earlier and younger, the better. Alexander Mostovoy is a writer, researcher, and public speaker, and is recognized as a leading authority on the application of clinical thermography. Since 1999, he has pioneered the use of breast thermography in his clinic in Toronto, Canada with a special interest in breast thermography and women’s health. He is also a Founder and the CEO of Thermography Clinic Inc.; a company that helps health professionals around the world integrating clinical thermography into their practices. He is actively involved in educating health care providers on the benefits of breast thermography as a breastscreening tool and can be reached at info@thermographyclinic.com Full references available by request.

Skin and coat health is a barometer of general health. The skin is the body’s first line of defence; a major component of the immune system. This formidable barrier cannot do its job correctly if its cells lack hydration and membrane integrity. Hydration of guard cells keeps them robust and tightly lined up creating impermeable armour. Within the hydrated cell, nutrients flow efficiently and their communication systems are intact to convey their messages efficiently. Hydration is not only dependent on water consumption. It depends largely on mineral electrolyte balance and fatty acids status of the cell membranes. Not only does the right balance of fatty acids help balance inflammatory response to environmental triggers; these fatty acids also make up integral components of the cell membranes holding water and other important constituents within the cells. Without this fatty layer (lipid bilayer) intact in the cell membranes, any amount of water consumed cannot be saturated and retained in the right cell compartments by the body. Topical skin creams cannot compensate for fatty acid deficiency which must be re-saturated from within, using the right dietary building blocks. The bagged and canned foods that have become staples are exposed to processing intensity that easily damages these delicate polyunsaturated fats in the food. These processed foods are also loaded with sodium sources that exacerbate skin irritations by further disrupting water balance. Supplementation of each meal with the correct ratios of the right omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids will help build this healthy immune system barrier and restore balance throughout the body. A supply of the right intracellular minerals, such as potassium and magnesium further support the right balance in the body to empower the body for spontaneous health and disease management. The ratios and the type of essential fats and other nutrients your pet requires daily are different from those that you need.

HDApril/May2012_HealthyDirectionsTemplate 12-03-28 3:06 PM Page 29

Choose fatty acids supplements, for your pet, that are designed specifically for their distinct metabolism and gastrointestinal tract. Preventing a deficiency of these fatty acid building blocks all year around is the best health insurance you can apply for your pet.

ECO LIVING

Save “Green” Going Green By Laurie Diwakar, BA There are hundreds of ways to be environmentally friendly. The ones that are the most exciting to entertain are those that are both ecological and economical. After all, “green” was a term reserved for money not so long ago. Certain strategies are familiar; like doing laundry in cold water and hanging it to dry. Spring is the perfect time to take a look at old routines and make a few changes that are long overdue.

CLEANING UP AND SAVING CASH Another great idea is making your own household cleaners. Do you really need 20 different cleaners? There are a lot of free recipes online to make simple and safe cleaners. Don’t underestimate the cleaning power of vinegar and baking soda combined. All that fizzing will lift dirt of most surfaces safely and easily. And while you are cleaning, save some cash by switching to rags. There really is no need to buy paper towels. Since you are skipping the paper towel section, skip the diaper and tissue sections also. Handkerchiefs, washable napkins and especially washable diapers can save you a pile of money; not to mention cut down on waste. Cloth diapers have evolved with the times into an easy to use solution to save both time and money.

FOOD SAVVY SAVINGS Another area of huge waste is food. Switching to a reusable water bottle, lunch containers and cutlery are a given. But how about eating vegetarian once or twice a week? Meat production uses a lot 30 HEALTHY DIRECTIONS April/May 2012

of resources and meat also costs a lot compared to most meat alternatives. Skip the meat a couple times a week. You can trim down your grocery budget, while making a positive environmental impact.

THE ULTIMATE TURN-OFF A silent thief of the green factor is electronics. The older they are, the more likely it is that they are energy guzzlers. Don’t be fooled though, many newer electronics consume energy when turned off. Turning them off at night, or using a power bar with a switch to cut the power is another solution. There are also many electronics recycling programs if you want a permanent solution to the problem.

GETTING AROUND TOWN Lastly, some major consideration should be given to transportation. Cars are hazardous to your wallet, health and the environment. Walking, biking and using public transportation are ideal ways to cut back. If you can’t make that kind of commitment, try combining errands on a single day or a couple days. Also, try driving the speed limit. Speeding produces pollution and increases the cost of operating your vehicle. Make a commitment to save some “green” today. It is time to snap out of our slacktivism and put the wheels of change in motion. Laurie Diwakar, mother, B, and president of Rearz Inc.

Is Your Child Hyperactive, Not Concentrating, Too Tired to Play?

Food Allergies and Children By Raisa Weisspapir, Homeopath, MD (Europe) There are basically two types of food allergies: immediate and delayed. An immediate reaction occurs within minutes of eating a food and consists of hives, swelling of the lips, face and eyes or difficulty breathing. This reaction can be very serious and must be treated immediately. Common foods causing this are shrimp and nuts. The second type of reaction is a delayed one, called food sensitivity. Symptoms may vary from painful and bloated stomach to feelings of fatigue. It may occur hours or even 2-3 days after eating a certain food. The most common symptoms are hay fever, sinus congestion, itching eyes and abdominal discomfort. Unusual symptoms may include behavioral problems.

BEHAVIOR REACTIONS Because of the body’s delayed response it’s difficult to make an association with a specific food. How do I know if my child is sensitive to food? Children act as if they are “spaced out”. They are sleepy or become tired quickly. They are fidgety and can’t sit still and may have lapses in their concentration. Behaviour like pushing, biting, kicking, and punching may occur. They may have an inabilty to stay focused or are unable to respond normally to advice or instructions. Other symptoms are: hyperactivity, depression, fatigue, headaches, abdominal discomfort, silliness, irritability, aggression, or persistent yawning. It is known children have an intense craving for the foods to which they are most sensitive. This sensitivity could be towards a

variety of foods based on a child’s individuality. For example, dairy products can make some children hyperactive or mean, some kids might turn blue with asthma, and others might develop headaches, weakness, or wet their bed.

SOLUTIONS In my experience, homeopathic medicine combined with life style changes, special elimination/rotation diets and some supplements (like vitamin C) are very important to keep a child healthy. Homeopathy gently works for every child individually, helping the body to heal itself. It balances a child mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically. This information is not to be a substitute for any professional medical advice. HEALTH BITES The Health Benefits of

Golden Berries

By Mark Schnedier

These days it seems many of us don’t have enough free time to stop and smell the roses, let alone prepare healthy food options. So how does one keep up with today’s fast-paced world and still maintain good health? It’s not always easy but part of the solution is to maximize the nutritional value of the foods you’re eating onthe-go. What if we were able to replace nutritionally-bankrupt snack foods and comfort foods with organic superfoods that are equally delicious but far more nourishing? One such superfood is the golden berry (Physalis peruviana), a valuable snack option. Golden berries are native to the South American tropics and high-altitudes of Peru, Columbia, Chile and Ecuador, where the fruits grow wild and are typically vine ripened. The Incas cultivated the earliest berries and brought them to South Africa in the region of the Cape of Good Hope, where the name Cape gooseberry originated in the 1800s. The Physalis peruviana plant grows up to one metre high and bears cream-colored flowers, which produce the small edible fruit. Also known as Incan berries, golden berries are slightly bigger than raisins and yellowish orange in colour, with an exotic sweet and tart flavour combination that has drawn comparisons to candied lemons. The tangy kick they possess is largely due to the tiny seeds contained within the berries, which explode with flavour and lend the berries a satisfying crunchiness. Fruit eaters in past generations may have enjoyed eating Golden berries simply because of their refreshing and delicious sweet taste, but modern science is now starting to confirm the health benefits of this amazing fruit.

Frequently eaten dry, these little golden nuggets are packed with powerful nutritional content that has helped earn them a deserved reputation as a superfood – that is, a food exceptionally rich in phytonutrients and health-supporting properties. Golden berries are a good source of provitamin A and vitamin C, as well as B complex nutrients including thiamine(B1), riboflavin(B2), niacin(B3), B6 and B12. They are also high in phosphorus and possess exceptionally high protein content for a fruit. Golden berries are especially rich in bioflavonoids(Vitamin P). Bioflavonoids possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, anti-histamine and anti-carcinogenic components. Other constituents within golden berries, such as carotenoids also provide anti-inflammatory and antioxidant protection. Some withanolides (naturally occurring chemical compounds) isolated from the plant have even shown anticancer activity. The potential health benefits of golden berries don’t stop there however. Golden berries belong to a class of foods known as “adaptogens” that are very helpful in reducing stress levels and maintaining homeostasis in the body. Evidence suggests that consuming golden berries may help balance blood sugar and blood pressure levels, as they have shown possible antidiabetes and antihypertension properties in vitro. Pectin, an insoluble fiber found in the berries, may help keep the blood sugar at its optimum level. The high fibre content of the golden berries also supports gastrointestinal health and cardiovascular health.

Grow Young with HGH From the landmark book Grow Young with HGH comes the most powerful, over-thecounter health supplement in the history of man. Human growth hormone was first discovered in 1920 and has long been thought by the medical community to be necessary only to stimulate the body to full adult size and therefore unnecessary past the age of 20. Recent studies, however, have overturned this notion completely, discovering instead that the natural decline of Human Growth Hormone (HGH), from ages 21 to 61 (the average age at which there is only a trace left in the body) and is the reason why the body ages and fails to regenerate itself to its 25 year-old biological age.

in the blood at the same levels HGH existed in the blood when we were 25 years old.

There is a receptor site in almost every cell in the human body for HGH, so its regenerative and healing effects are very comprehensive. Growth Hormone first synthesized in 1985 under the Reagan Orphan drug act, to treat dwarfism, was quickly recognized to stop aging in its tracks and reverse it to a remarkable degree. Since then, only the lucky and the rich have had access to it at the cost of $10,000 US per year.

The next big breakthrough was to come in 1997 when a group of doctors and scientists, developed an all-natural source product which would cause your own natural HGH to be released again and do all the remarkable things it did for you in your 20’s. Now available to every adult for about the Modern medical science now regards aging as price of a coffee and donut a day. a disease that is treatable and preventable and that “aging”, the disease, is GHR is available now, just actually a compilation of various in time for the aging Baby diseases and pathologies, like a rise Boomers and everyone else in blood glucose and pressure to from age 30 to 90 who diabetes, skin wrinkling and so on. doesn’t want to age but All of these aging symptoms can be would rather stay young, stopped and rolled back by beautiful and healthy all of maintaining Growth Hormone levels the time. The new HGH releasers are winning converts from the synthetic HGH users as well, since GHR is just as effective (for anti-aging) is oral instead of self-injectable and is very affordable.

GHR is a natural releaser, has no known side effects, unlike the synthetic version and has no known drug interactions. Progressive doctors admit that this is the direction medicine is going, to get the body to heal itself instead of employing drugs. GHR is truly a revolutionary paradigm shift in medicine and, like any modern leapfrog advance, many others will be left in the dust holding their limited, or useless drugs and remedies. It is now thought that HGH is so comprehensive in its healing and regenerative powers that it is today, where the computer industry was twenty years ago, that it will displace so many prescription and non-prescription drugs and health remedies that it is staggering to think of. The president of BIE Health Products, stated in a recent interview,“I’ve been waiting for these products since the 70’s”. We knew they would come, if only we could stay healthy and live long enough to see them! If you want to stay on top of your game, physically and mentally as you age, this product is a boon, especially for the highly skilled professionals who have made large investments in their education, and experience. Also with the state of the health care system in Canada which appears to be going into serious decline, it’s more important than ever to take pro-active steps to safeguard your health. Continued use of GHR will make a radical difference in your health. HGH is particularly helpful to the elderly who, given a choice, would rather stay independent in their own home, strong, healthy and alert enough to manage their own affairs, exercise and stay involved in their communities. Frank, age 85, walks two miles a day, plays golf, belongs to a dance club for seniors, had a girl friend again and doesn’t need Viagara, passed his drivers test and is hardly ever home when we call - GHR delivers. HGH is known to relieve symptoms of Asthma, Angina, Chronic Fatigue, Constipation, Lower back pain and Sciatica, Cataracts and Macular Degeneration, Menopause, Fibromyalgia, Regular and Diabetic Neuropathy, Hepatitis, helps Kidney Dialysis and Heart and Stroke recovery.
