Editor ’s Note A

utumn foods I crave the most are warming rich stews and hearty, root vegetable soups. One easy way to improve your diet is to include more whole grains and whole foods in your meals. A half cup of barley, quinoa, millet, spelt or buckwheat can be a flavourful and nutrient packed addition to most soups, stews and curries. Tired of serving plain, refined white rice? Mix it up with brown or wild rice, red rice or rye grains. Whole grains (containing all three parts of the grain: bran, germ and endosperm) add extra nutrients like B vitamins, vitamin E, fiber, antioxidants and phytonutrients. Eating more whole grains reduces the chance of developing type-2 diabetes, helps keep blood pressure under control, lowers risks for some types of cancers and aids weight management. Better health should be fun, browse a farmer’s market or stock up on whole foods as a family. Enjoy a morning pumpkin picking for jacko-lanterns and pick a pumpkin for soups and stews too. One of my favourite fall activities is to spend the day apple picking with family and friends. Kids love picking apples and tasting them. The apples keep well, as long as they’re not bruised. They make great applesauce and pies and are really handy to throw in a lunch or grab as a snack. It’s also a great way to support local farmers and enjoy an active day in the sun, while the warmer weather still lingers. We’ve included a recipe for a low sugar, gluten free apple crisp. Try it with a sweet apple that holds its shape well when cooking like Golden Delicious, or a tart apple like Idared apples. This issue of the magazine is dedicated to women’s health and is for women of all ages. We’ve included articles on breast cancer prevention, perimenopause and menopause, as well as, some ways to nurture yourself with hydrotherapy at home and yoga.

The Health Benefits of a

Whole Food Diet

Boost Your Energy! By Sarah Holvik, B.Sc. Nutrition When it comes to eating healthy, it is always the best plan to stick with whole, natural foods. As much as we want to believe that we are more advanced than our ancestors, they had the right idea when it came to their diets. Locally grown, fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and meats were dietary staples for centuries, which gave way to highly processed and refined foods, such as, fast food and ready-made meals to cater to our increasingly industrialized and busy lifestyles. These convenience foods are often stripped of their nutritional value with over-processing, leaving them inadequate to support our daily nutrient requirements. Beyond their lack of essential nutrients, processed foods are often packed with high levels of unhealthy fats, food additives and preservatives in order to enhance their flavour profile or extend their shelf life. Food companies have recently started to come full circle and offer processed foods with enhanced nutrient contents – it is easy to find foods touting enhanced fibre, vitamin, mineral, antioxidant or omega-3 fat content. While these foods are a better option from a nutritional standpoint, they are often 8 Healthy Directions October/November 2010

more expensive and have the same or less nutrient content as their whole food equivalents. If this isn`t enough reason to eat a ``clean`` diet, here are a few more reasons why diets based on whole foods are the best way to keep your health on track.

A LOWER GLYCEMIC CHOICE The term low glycemic describes foods that digest more slowly and prevent spikes in your blood sugar levels, due to their fibre and nutrient content. Whole fruits, vegetables and whole grains are lower glycemic choices than their refined food counterparts, fruit juices and white breads and pastas. Low glycemic foods provide more sustained energy throughout the day as well as decrease your risk for type-2 diabetes and heart disease.

LOWER YOUR RISK OF NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCIES Diets based on refined and processed foods put us at risk of nutritional deficiencies, as well as, a suite of chronic diseases

HDOctNov2010_HealthyDirectionsTemplate 10-09-22 5:25 PM Page 9

including heart disease, cancer and arthritis. Whole foods contain essential nutrients, such as, proteins, complex carbohydrates, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, as well as, antioxidant and detoxifying phytonutrients that work together to maintain optimal health.

WHOLE FOODS FOR WEIGHT CONTROL Diets based on whole foods usually contain fewer calories than those based on processed convenience foods. Fast foods and snack foods often have high calorie counts and contain excessive amounts of unhealthy saturated and trans fats. These types of fats increase your risk for obesity and can lead to heart diseases such as atherosclerosis and stroke due to their inflammatory and artery 窶田logging effect.

DETOXIFY Whole foods do not contain synthetic food additives or preservatives that can have toxic effects on the body. Choosing organic whole foods lowers your toxin exposure even further.

BOOST YOUR ENERGY Whole foods are packed full of essential nutrients that help to sustain your energy throughout the day. Fibre, protein and healthy fats from foods like olive oil, fish, seeds and nuts all help to prevent peaks and troughs in energy levels, and thus help us to avoid the 3:00 pm muffin and coffee run. Another reason why a whole food diet helps to fend off unwanted weight gain. Consuming a balanced diet rich in whole foods is nature`s diet plan. By simply choosing foods in their most natural form and avoiding processed or refined foods, we can provide our bodies with optimal nutrition; help prevent chronic disease and look and feel great in the process.3 Vancouver Nutritionist Sarah Holvik is the owner of nutrition consulting company Manna Health Group. She welcomes questions at: sarah@mannahealthgroup.com and sarah@activelivingprogram.com.

HEARTY WHOLE GRAIN RECIPES MUSHROOM AND BARLEY RAGOÛT Vegan-Friendly!

You can’t go wrong with this combination of mushrooms and barley. The addition of Chinese seasonings and lentils adds interesting flavors and expands the range of nutrients in the dish. Just add a sliced tomato or green salad to complete the meal.

HEARTY WHOLE GRAIN RECIPES TAILGATERS’ FAVORITE STEW

I can’t imagine anything more appealing on a blustery day than a big serving of this ambrosial stew. It’s great for potlucks and outdoor get-togethers because it’s easily transportable and there is nothing to add. Makes 8 servings.

INGREDIENTS 6 slices bacon 1⁄4 cup whole wheat flour 1 tsp salt 1⁄2 tsp cracked black peppercorns 1⁄4 tsp cayenne pepper 2 lbs trimmed stewing beef, cut into 1-inch (2.5 cm) chunks 2 onions, finely chopped 2 stalks celery, diced 2 carrots, peeled and diced 4 cloves garlic, minced 2 bay leaves 1⁄2 tsp freshly grated nutmeg 1 grated zest and juice of 1 orange 11⁄2 cups wheat, spelt or Kamut berries, rinsed and drained 1 cup dry red wine 1 can (51⁄2 oz/156 mL) tomato paste 2 cups reduced-sodium beef stock

DIRECTIONS

Heartily, High in Fiber. Variations and Tips

Substitute an equal quantity of barley or farro for the wheat berries. The orange juice and zest add wonderful depth to this stew. If you like heat, increase the cayenne to as much as 1⁄2 tsp (2 mL). Browning the beef takes about 5 minutes per batch. You'll need to simmer the stew for about 1 1⁄2 hours to ensure the wheat berries are tender.

Over medium-high heat, sauté bacon until crisp. Transfer to a paper towel–lined plate to drain. When cool, crumble and set aside. Drain off all but 2 tbsp (25 mL) fat from pan, reserving extra. On a plate, combine flour, salt, peppercorns and cayenne. Dredge beef in mixture until coated. Discard any excess. Add beef to pan, in batches, and cook, stirring, until nicely browned on all sides. Add more bacon drippings, if required. Remove beef to a plate and reserve. Reduce heat to medium. Add onions, celery and carrots to pan and cook, stirring, until carrots are softened, about 7 minutes. Add garlic, bay leaves, nutmeg and orange zest and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Add wheat berries, orange juice, red wine, tomato paste, stock and 11⁄2 cups (375 mL) water and bring to a boil. Return beef and bacon to pot and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer until wheat berries are tender.

HEALTH BENEFITS Excellent source of vitamin A, niacin, phosphorus, iron, magnesium, manganese, zinc and selenium. Good source of thiamine, riboflavin and copper. Source of vitamins C and E (alphatocopherol), folate, pantothenic acid and calcium. Contains a very high amount of dietary fiber. CURRIED SWEET POTATO AND MILLET SOUP Vegan-Friendly! This soup is a lovely combination of flavors and texture. It has a mild curry taste, enhanced with the addition of orange and a hint of sweetness from the maple syrup. The toasted walnuts add an appealing bit of crunch, while the optional yogurt provides a creamy finish.

INGREDIENTS 1 tbsp 2 2 2 2 2 tsp 2 tsp 1 tsp 2 cups 6 cups

vegetable oil onions, finely chopped carrots, peeled & diced stalks celery, diced cloves garlic, minced minced gingerroot curry powder grated orange zest sweet potato purée Homemade Vegetable Stock or reduced-sodium chicken stock 3⁄4 cup millet, toasted (see tips) 1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice 1⁄4 cup pure maple syrup *Salt and pepper, toasted chopped walnuts or sliced almonds, plain yogurt, optional Excerpted from The Complete Whole Grains Cookbook © 2008 Judith Finlayson. Photographs © 2008 Robert Rose Inc. www.robertrose.ca

DIRECTIONS In a large saucepan or stockpot, heat oil over medium heat for 30 seconds. Add onions, carrots and celery and cook, stirring, until carrots have softened. Add garlic, ginger, curry powder and orange zest and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Add sweet potato and stock and stir well. Bring to a boil. Stir in millet. Reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer until millet is tender and flavors have blended, about 30 minutes. Add orange juice and maple syrup and heat through. Ladle into bowls and garnish with toasted walnuts and a drizzle of yogurt.

VARIATION & TIPS Curried Sweet Potato and Quinoa Soup: Substitute an equal quantity of quinoa for the millet. Do not toast it, but rinse thoroughly before adding. While it’s not necessary to toast millet, toasting does bring out its pleasantly nutty flavor. To toast millet, heat in a dry skillet over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it crackles and releases its aroma, about 5 minutes.

Time to Talk About

Breast Cancer Risk

Reduce Your Risk. Here’s How! By Rahima Hirji, ND Take a look around. Look at your mothers, sisters, friends and all the other women who you love and care about. Now consider that, according to the Canadian Cancer Society, 1 out of every 9 of them will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetimes and 1 in 28 will die from it.

ASSESS YOUR RISK October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month; so, now is a good time to look at your lifestyle and determine whether you are at risk for developing breast cancer and for making the necessary changes to help prevent it. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, you have an increased risk of developing breast cancer if, you have a family history of breast cancer (especially in a mother, sister or daughter diagnosed before menopause or if mutations on BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes are present) or you have a family history of ovarian cancer. You are also at increased risk if you have had increased exposure to estrogen, for example, if you have never given birth or gave birth for the first time after 30, if you began menstruating at a young age or if you reached menopause later than average. Other factors that can increase your risk include: a history of taking hormone replacement therapy, having exposure to radiation therapy to the chest area at an early age, being overweight, excessive alcohol consumption, or a history of taking the birth control pill. 14 Healthy Directions October/November 2010

When considering ways to decrease your risk of breast cancer, it is important to understand the role of estrogen in the body. Estrogen is a hormone necessary for female reproductive function and exerts its effects by binding to receptor sites throughout the body. However, it needs to be in balance. In our lifestyle today, we have excessive exposure to estrogen from our environment, food and medicines. This leads to excessive estrogen. Too much estrogen in turn, increases your risk of developing breast cancer.

FOODS FOR PREVENTION So what can you do to protect yourself? Start by looking at your plate. Diet plays a huge role in preventing breast cancer. Avoid sugary, processed foods lacking in nutrients. Instead, focus on whole foods, rich in antioxidants and fiber. Fiber helps bind to estrogen and get rid of it from your body, thereby decreasing estrogen’s negative effects on breast tissue. Also, include foods like flaxseeds, red clover and beans in your diet as these are phytoestrogens which displace estrogen from receptor sites and protect from excess estrogen. When picking vegetables, it is important to focus on the cruciferous family. These include cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, bok choy and kale. When consumed, these vegetables provide the breakdown product called indole-3-carbinol or I3C. I3C had been shown to be protective against breast cancer.

HDOctNov2010_HealthyDirectionsTemplate 10-09-22 5:26 PM Page 15

Focusing on foods that provide good fats is also essential to maintain health. Increase omega-3 fats in the diet by consuming oily fish like salmon, trout, mackerel and herring and other foods like avocados and walnuts to help fight off breast cancer. Lastly, try to eat organic, especially when it comes to animal products. Animal products that have been raised using antibiotics and hormones increase our exposure to estrogen. Organic animal products don’t have the same negative effect since they are raised without antibiotics or growth hormones. Lifestyle factors play a significant role in mitigating your risk of developing breast cancer. Many studies have shown that exercise, for example, can reduce your risk of breast cancer. You don’t have to go the gym or lift heavy weights either; simply walking regularly is enough to reduce the risk of breast cancer. You also want to avoid the use of plastics. Plastics contain xenoestrogens, which are more potent than the estrogen our bodies make and can interfere with reproductive function. Store foods in glass containers and never heat up food in the microwave in plastic or place plastics in the dishwasher as this further releases xenoestrogens from the plastic. Xenoestrogens are also present in electronics, foods, cleaning agents, health and beauty products and pesticides. Try to eat organic fruits that have not been treated with pesticides and pick natural health and beauty products, as well as, household cleaning agents to further minimize exposure to xenoestrogens. Breast cancer can be a scary and intimidating disease, but if you make some dietary and lifestyle changes, you can significantly reduce your risks. Also, there are several urinary and saliva tests available to help assess and monitor your risk of developing breast cancer. For more information on how to prevent or treat breast cancer, talk to a naturopathic doctor.3 Rahima Hirji, ND is a Naturopathic Doctor at Target Therapeutics in Kitchener. She has an eclectic practice where she enjoys working with pediatric patients and has a special interest in weight loss, women’s health and infertility. She also offers a variety of specialized tests to help assess the risk of developing breast cancer. For more information, check out her website at www.targettherapeutics.com or call 519-593-2354.

Finding Balance During

Perimenopause How to Support Hormonal Health

By Vivienne Guy, ND Menopause is a natural transition in a woman’s life from her childbearing years. Perimenopause usually occurs between the age of 40 and 50. This is not a medical condition that someone can be diagnosed with, however for many women the symptoms that interfere with their lives so strongly that support is needed. The following are common signs from the body that the system is out of balance. Hot flashes day or night, poor sleep quality leaving you exhausted throughout the day, memory loss, vaginal dryness. Ovaries, liver, thyroid, and adrenal glands are all involved and for this reason, adaptogenic treatment and herbs, which support the entire hormonal system to promote overall balance are often recommended.

WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THE HORMONES ? With childbearing over there is no need to use energy to produce and release eggs. Therefore there is a natural decline in hormones produced from the ovaries. Progesterone is often the first to decline, which temporarily leaves estrogen seeming higher, a state called “estrogen dominance”. 16 Healthy Directions October/November 2010

Naturopathic doctors assist women smoothly transition by working with the overall balance of hormones. It is often the case that you do not need to add more hormones, but rather balance those already there. Salivary hormone testing is done to determine if there truly is an excess of estrogen or a loss of progesterone. Botanical therapies are of great importance for balancing hormones in the body. There are herbs that have been used for hundreds of years such as chaste tree, black cohosh, and ashwaganda that normalize hormone as opposed to artificially adding them.

OTHER ORGANS INVOLVED The bodies’ systems are intimately connected, and menopausal symptoms are not solely a result of declining ovarian function. The adrenal glands are the primary source of stress response hormones. When the body is hit with any kind of stress, good or bad, the adrenals produce the hormones that help us cope. However, after several years of running a household, working overtime or worrying about finances, to name just a few of the common daily stressors, or

HDOctNov2010_HealthyDirectionsTemplate 10-09-22 5:26 PM Page 17

a lack of exercise, excess caffeine, sugar, alcohol or refined carbohydrates these poor glands become exhausted. During menopause the adrenal glands are called upon to balance the lower ovarian production of hormones, but if the adrenals themselves are out of balance they will be unable to fulfill their role in assisting the ovaries. During menopause women may be diagnosed with hypothyroidism. The symptoms of weight gain, fatigue, poor concentration, hair loss are also signs of low thyroid function. The adrenal glands and the regular stress response can have an effect on thyroid function. Estrogen dominance also blocks the action of the thyroid hormone and leads to symptoms of hypothyroidism, even when thyroid hormone levels appear normal on lab results.

FIND THE BALANCE Some people choose to administer thyroid hormones, but naturopathically we would look at the cause of the low thyroid hormone and look to support the adrenal glands: by decreasing stress, with guided relaxation daily, with herbs that help the body resist stress and support that cortisol production. We balance the estrogen and progesterone levels.

SUPPORTING HORMONE PROCESSING

diet a day. Why not track what you are eating for a couple of days and see how close you are coming to this amount? Remember that in perimenopause there are many changes emotionally and physically. Speak with your ND to discover ways to reduce menopausal symptoms through decreasing stress, supporting the adrenal glands and liver and by improving thyroid function. 3

Our liver is the body’s big detoxifier. It is responsible for breaking down and eliminating hormones that have been used or are unwanted. The liver is often overburdened with unhealthy foods, stress, alcohol and as a result “used” hormones are left to circulate longer than they should, greatly disrupting the overall hormone balance.

HOW IT WORKS!

Powerful Proteolytic Enzymes for

Joint & Muscle Pain

By Sandy Freeman, Naturopath, Mycologist, Equine Specialist and Ryan Boland, Researcher and Graphic Artist Millions of people seeking temporary relief from everyday aches, pains and muscle soreness due to everyday activity, increased flexibility and mobility, and support for normal inflammation response, as well as, joint and tendon health have found an answer in proteolytic enzymes.

WHAT ARE PROTEOLYTIC ENZYMES? Proteolytic enzymes come from plant and animal sources. Enzymes play a critical role in the body and are involved in an astounding number of metabolic processes. Scientists suspect there may be as many as 15,000 enzymes at work in our bodies on a daily basis. Enzymes are involved in a variety of bodily processes including: breathing, growing, digesting, producing energy, conducting nerve impulses, clotting blood, recovering after exercise and balancing the complex processes of the immune system. Clinically studied enzymes: pancreatin, papain, bromelain, trypsin, and chymotrypsin are proteases, meaning they break down proteins. Some proteins in the body stimulate inflammation and

others repress it, a delicate balance the body tries to maintain. Proteolytic enzymes support that balancing process, assisting normal inflammation response leading to temporary relief from everyday activity-related aches and pains. Systemic inflammation is associated with an increase of risk of many diseases. Proteolytic enzymes help balance the immune system and decrease systemic inflammation. Proteolytic enzymes can be used alone or in combination with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). They support the musculosketal system by promoting health and mobility in joints and muscles and are also good for respiratory and sinus health. Something old is something new. Finally relief has come with a famous product out of Germany. Please visit your local retailer and find out more. Preventing & Managing

DIABETES

By Elvis Ali, BSc, FIACA, D.Hom, ND Diabetes is a chronic disease and one of the most common noncommunicable diseases in the world. Statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) indicate that the amount of people with diabetes continues to escalate. As obesity increases, coupled with an aging population, thousands of people are diagnosed each day with diabetes. To obtain energy from food our body requires insulin, which regulates the body's use of glucose (sugar) and helps prevent a buildup of sugar in the bloodstream. Without insulin or the body's inability to utilize insulin effectively, the result is abnormally high levels of glucose in the bloodstream. Diabetes occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces, thus, leading to an increased concentration of glucose in the blood known as hyperglycemia. According to WHO statistics, more than 220 million people worldwide have diabetes. WHO projects that diabetes deaths will double between 2005 and 2030. According to Health Canada, the number of Canadians aged 12 and over with diabetes is estimated at 1.2 to 1.4 million (4.9% to 5.8% of the population aged 12 and over), including undiagnosed cases of diabetes.

DIABETES MAJOR CLASSIFICATIONS Gestational Diabetes – temporary, occurs during pregnancy whereby the pancreas is unable to produce sufficient insulin. Type 1 Diabetes – previously known as insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus or IDDM. This type is more common in children and young adults and is caused by auto - immune destruction of the insulin - producing beta - cells of the pancreas. Type 2 Diabetes – accounts for the majority of cases and is usually diagnosed in middleaged and older adults. It was previously known as non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus or NIDDM. In this case, insulin resistance is present and signifies impaired ability of cells to take up glucose from the blood under the action of insulin. 444

ARE YOU AT RISK?

PREVENTION

The risk factors of Type 1 diabetes include hereditary and race and is more prevalent in Caucasians. In Type 2, the risk factors are obesity, hereditary, sedentary lifestyle, over 45 years old, impaired glucose tolerance, and race (Aboriginal, African, Asian or Hispanic decent).

Listed below are simple lifestyle measures which have been shown to be effective in preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes. • Maintain a healthy body weight • Avoid tobacco use – smoking increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases • Exercise at least 30 minutes on most days at a moderateintensity level. More activity is required for weight control. • Consuming foods (whole-grain and cereal high fiber products) with a low glycemic index helps to reduce both fasting blood glucose and glycated proteins independent of carbohydrate consumption. • Intake of vitamin E, carotenoids, and magnesium can be increased to counteract diabetes risk.

SYMPTOMS Symptoms are polyuria, extreme hunger, unexplained sudden weight loss, lethargy, weakness, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, numbness or tingling in hands or feet, slow wound healing, and recurring gum or bladder infections.

In both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes it is imperative to monitor and maintain normal blood sugar levels in order to prevent complications. For serious diabetic complications, steps, such as, modifying your diet, exercising and reducing your weight and sugar intake may not be sufficient. One has to consult with their health care practitioner to see if they need insulin or pharmaceutical drugs. Insulin is necessary to help manage diabetes; however, it is not a cure.

There are natural approaches which have long been used in traditional systems of medicine for diabetes. Some include; fenugreek, bitter melon, gymnema, ginseng, chromium, and alphalipoic acid. Scientific studies have shown the positive effects of supplementation with micronutrients, such as, lutein/zeaxanthin, vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids, docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid (DHA and EPA). Below is a summary of supplements which may be beneficial. Although Type 1 Diabetes can never be corrected by diet alone and will always require insulin, proper dietary habits with adequate supplementation can help moderate the problem. Each diet must be tailored to each individual and no diabetic should ever reduce or stop his or her insulin without consulting their family physician.3 Elvis Ali, BSc, FIACA, D.Hom, ND graduated with a Bachelor of Science majoring in Biology in 1979 and received his Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine in 1987. Ali has been in private practice for 22 years specializing in Chinese medicine, sports medicine and nutrition. He is a member of the postgraduate association at Harvard medical school and a staff member at CCNM.

Train to be a Registered Holistic Allergist* Expand the reach of your practice

By Sandrine Briatte, B.Sc. Biochemistry, M.Sc. Biology Type 2 diabetes is one of the most prevalent growing diseases in Canada. Although many drugs improve glycemic control, some of them have recently been called into question because they increase cardiovascular and fracture risks. In this way, many clinical evidences have been reported, supporting complementary and alternative medicine interventions for improving glycemic control. Indeed, biologically active substances of some plants possess a broad spectrum of pharmacological properties without heavy side effects. They can affect various internal organs and influence positively our quality of life.

GREEN TEA AND GINSENG FOR DIABETES Polyphenols, such as, EGCG make around 30 per cent of the dry leaf weight for green tea. Presently, they are known for their ability against cellular oxidation. But more recently, researchers set out to determine the effects of EGCG under high glucose conditions. Their studies have suggested these compounds have improved insulin sensitivity and reduced cell damage in animal and in vitro studies. Other evidence, from prospective and retrospective population studies, has shown green tea consumption reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes by up to 48%. The effects of syringin, an active principle of the ginseng root, on plasma glucose levels have been investigated in animal study. Its ability to enhance glucose utilization and lower plasma glucose level in rats suffering from insulin deficiency suggested it can be useful in the treatment of human diabetes. Two long-term clinical studies also both report decreases in fasting blood glucose and glucosylated haemoglobin on patients with type 2 diabetes.Three other short-term metabolic trials in healthy volunteers also found interesting results: postprandial glucose decreased with the use of ginseng, which means ginseng could help to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Herbal tea is an easy, enjoyable way to take advantage of these beneficial ingredients because of its ability to extract soluble substances quickly, without damage or chemical substances.3 Sandrine Briatte, B.Sc. MAKE-IT NATURAL

Hydrotherapy at Home The Healing Power of Water

By Erika Buckley, BSc, ND When I named my clinic “Aqua Vitalis” I had no clue that the name would come back to haunt me. Instead of the calming, gentle, healing waters I had envisioned, water truly came to life in my clinic in the form of a flooded basement 3 months ago. Luckily this is one of the few instances where water creates stress. In fact, water is a great tool available to all of us for stress management. Hydrotherapy is a natural therapeutic technique that uses water in various forms to attain and maintain wellness. It can be something as simple as a nice relaxing epsom salt bath at home, to a full inoffice treatment using alternating compresses to encourage circulation, immune performance and detoxification. Learning a few simple hydrotherapy techniques you can do at home can really add to your arsenal of stress coping skills.

EPSOM SALT BATHS Most of us enjoy a nice, hot bath as a great way to relax after a long stressful day, but by simply adding 2-4 cups of Epsom salts, the therapeutic effects of this classic hydrotherapy technique are multiplied greatly. Soaking for 10 to 15 minutes in these magnesium based salts removes toxins from the muscles and causes tension to release. Feel free to add to the experience by lighting some candles and placing a cotton ball with a drop of lavender oil on it near your head to deepen relaxation. Just don’t add any scented products to the water as this may prevent the salts from having their full effect.

STEAM INHALATION WITH DEEP BREATHING Create your own relaxing spa ‘steam room’ experience with this easy at home alternative. Fill a glass or ceramic bowl with boiling water and add a few drops of a relaxing essential oil, such as, lavender or geranium. Place a towel over your head, allowing it to drape over the sides of the bowl creating a tent to trap in the steam. Then lean over the bowl, close your eyes and slowly inhale fully through your nostrils, followed by a slow exhale through your mouth. This is a great treatment for allergies and cold congestion. 28 Healthy Directions October/November 2010

WARMING SOCK TREATMENT “What? Cold wet socks! No Way!” Don’t be fooled. This treatment can bring a more restful sleep. Start by soaking a pair of cotton socks under cold tap water and wringing them thoroughly; so, that they are not dripping. Put the socks on bare feet and cover with a pair of dry wool socks. Get cozy in bed and keep feet covered for the night and by the time you awake your feet will be warm and dry. As you sleep the socks will draw circulation from your head to your feet clearing your mind, allowing for a more peaceful sleep.

WARM FOOT BATH At the end of a busy day you can relax both your mind and tired feet by filling a basin with warm water and submerging your feet for 10-30 minutes. Spend this time wisely and read something inspiring or fun. Who says you don’t have time to read? Happy mind, happy feet!

WRAPS These in-office treatments are a simple approach to whole body relaxation. Similar to the warming sock treatment, but think a snug secure wrap around the chest and abdomen. Within 5 minutes, you’ll be toasted warm and in a world of rest and relaxation. Chest wraps increase circulation through your core organs, increasing immunity and detoxification. After one treatment you’ll want to make it part of your regular natural health care regime. So if ocean sounds, water fountains and hot tubs make up your ideal relaxation moments, consider hydrotherapy. Your body will thank you for it!3 Erika Buckley, BSc, ND practices at Aqua Vitalis Naturopathic with locations in Whitby and Port Perry. Inspired by the Water Cure traditions around the world, Erika has travelled to the U.S., England and Germany in pursuit of further knowledge of these simple yet effective treatments. Whole Food, For Whole Health By Angela Hubbard, RD There are constantly new headlines giving tidbits of eating advice. Processed foods have higher salt contents and are linked with high blood pressure. Eating enough fruits and vegetables can reduce the risks for many chronic diseases, such as, cancers and heart disease. Including enough fibre in our diets helps maintain regular bowel patterns and can lower bad cholesterol levels. With each new headline, it often feels like healthy eating gets a bit harder, with just one more thing to remember and try to change. Why does it feel this way in a time when our marketplaces are filled with the newest conveniences and latest food technologies; things that were supposed to make healthy eating simpler? In only a couple of generations, our reliance on convenience foods has grown dramatically. As we demand even greater convenience from food processors, including longer shelf-lives and products that leave little work for us to do, we have given the food industry the permission to do what is necessary in order to meet our demands. Fundamentally, we need to take a step back and understand some of the reasons for eating. Simple right? Because you’re hungry. But wait - why do you feel hunger? When you think about the constant growth and renewal that is happening inside of your body every second of every day, such as, the continual production of new blood cells, you begin to view eating as a way to provide all the building blocks your body needs.

One way to know that you are getting these building blocks is to include a variety of whole foods that have been minimally processed into your daily eating habits. For example, think of whole wheat flour. It is made with the whole kernel of wheat including the germ, bran, and starch. Although the germ and the bran are the smallest parts of the grain (20%), they contain the majority of nutrients, including vitamin E, magnesium and dietary fibre. In white flour however, only the starch portion is used, with the germ and bran being removed and sold separately. Not only does processing separate components of healthy foods, but vitamins and phytochemicals can be destroyed and preservatives are often added. The nutrients in whole foods, such as phytochemicals, vitamins, minerals and fibres, work together to help the body function at its best, now and into the future. When nutrients are consumed together, as they were naturally packaged in the whole food, they have a greater positive impact on health than individual supplements. In addition, a variety of whole foods eaten together on a regular basis also have additive and synergistic effects on overall health. Whole foods also offer a host of benefits that require no research or scientific findings to figure out. There’s the taste, colour and texture qualities of fresh foods, reduced environmental impacts, and fewer ingredients to decode. 3 Angela Hubbard, RD is a Registered Dietitian and nutrition consultant located in Toronto, Ontario. A Whole-Child Naturopathic Approach to

Autistic Spectrum Disorder

By Rahim Habib, ND Autism can manifest with a range of expressions…it could be someone who has a very high IQ, who is focused in their intent, though being socially awkward with less skill in effectively communicating with others (think of Dustin Hoffman in the movie Rainman); or, it could be someone who needs 24 hours a day care, having a complete inability to communicate or be understood whatsoever, since they cannot speak, or comprehend regular language. This broad range of symptoms necessitated the notion of autistic symptoms fitting on a wide ‘spectrum,’ so people with the disorder are said to have an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). Ultimately, there is an inherent difficulty in communicating and in behaviour, which means that these people often either stand out in our society, or are part of the faded background of society. The diagnosis of ASD is increasing, with estimates of being found in 1 in 150 Canadian children, and 1 in 75 boys, since it is about 4 times more likely to affect boys. Since it is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder, early diagnosis and intervention is critical to maximize a child with autism’s ability to speak, learn, and function. It is often diagnosed by 3-5 years of age, though signs of ASD are often apparent by 1-2 years of age. Some of the early signs are: large gain in head circumference between birth and 12 months of age, child does not babble or coo by 12 months of age, child does not gesture, such as point or wave, by 12 months, child does not say single words by 16 30 Healthy Directions October/November 2010

months, child does not say two-word phrases on his or her own (rather than just repeating what someone else says) by 24 months, child has lost any language or social skills (at any age), lack of eyecontact or response when called by parents or care-givers. Common ways to help these children include behavioural programming, speech and occupational therapy, psychotherapeutic medications, and special education. A whole-child naturopathic approach incorporates addressing the digestive and immune systems, nutrition, toxicity, self-regulatory and structural issues, and implementing educational programs that improve communication, effective behaviour, emotional interaction, and sensory balancing.

POOR DIGESTION & NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCIES Research has shown that at least 40%, and up to 75% of autistic children tested have a very porous, or hyper-permeable, intestinal lining. This means that their intestinal boundary is less guarded, letting many substances into the body. This has been shown to trigger food intolerance reactions, and to possibly affect their immune system and other parts of their body. A 2010 study published in the European Journal of Pediatrics found six significant nutritional deficiencies in a group of autistic children, compared to non-autistic children. These deficiencies included zinc, calcium, vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin C, vitamin B6, and folic acid. Each of these has a role in brain health. For

HDOctNov2010_HealthyDirectionsTemplate 10-09-22 2:24 PM Page 31

example, zinc is important for nerve cell replication, and helps promote connections amongst nerve cells. Vitamin A may reconnect the retinoid receptors critical for vision, sensory perception, language processing and attention, learning and memory. Vitamin A also helps heal a damaged intestinal membrane, and has immune supportive effects at the right dose. Once vitamin D is produced and then activated in the body, it has potent neuro-developmental effects. It is also interesting to note that there are a large number of vitamin D receptors on brain cells and immune cells. Some research has identified low vitamin D levels in the pregnant mother as a risk factor for infantile autism in the newborn.

TOXINS & AUTISM Some research supports the role of toxicity with the chances of developing autism. Naturally, if something is neurotoxic, such as mercury, it is obvious that it is a likely suspect for causing neurological problems. Keep in mind that the effect of the toxin may also depend on when or to what extent the pregnant mother or young child was exposed. Just as there are common developmental milestones for the new baby, subtle immunerelated milestones are affected by toxins. Some toxins increase the chances of mutations that develop in the fetus, which may lead to autism; these include cadmium, mercury, nickel, vinyl chloride, and trichloroethylene. Needless to say, toxins affect all of us, the question is to what extent. This is why toxicity testing is part of my naturopathic assessment in all patients, including children with learning and developmental concerns. Developing a detoxification program is often part of the treatment of people with autism.

existence. In children with autism, their ability to sense the world is in some examples very heightened (such as being hypersensitive to noises, or touch), and in others, not very sensitive (such as temperature, and social nuances). The ability to sense the world is fundamental, and this is an area that needs support and balancing. Some children with autism have difficulty handling the slightest touch, and others can’t get enough and often bump into everything with glee; physical therapies, massage, horseback riding, may be helpful in certain cases. Homeopathy is also very helpful in encouraging self-regulation overall. From a structural perspective, latent birth traumas, variations in brain structural development in-utero, and other causes of cranial bone restrictions can often play a role in how well someone with autism functions. Osteopathic and visceral manipulations can be very helpful for these children, with marked improvements in behaviour.

32 Healthy Directions October/November 2010

There are many and increasing forms of interventions that go beyond what is commonly available in special education classes. It may be a matter of parents learning about what approaches are available, and trying ones that feel right. Observing the whole child, can let the child show the parents and practitioners the way to best help them. Additional nutritional and toxicity testing and interventions, and an examination of structure in relation to bodily function, with effective learning strategies, can help many people faced with autism lead fuller lives.3 Rahim is a registered naturopathic doctor who has a general family practice, with a special interest in helping patients comprehensively detoxify their bodies for preventative and therapeutic benefit. GARLIC for Colds and Flu

Allimax max

N AT U R E ’ S A N T I B I O T I C

THE WORLD’S MOST

POWERFUL

GARLIC SUPPLEMENT

By Peter Josling Garlic (Allium sativum) has been used as a medicine and health-promoter for 5,000 years. It was widely used in ancient Assyria, Egypt, India, Greece and China. Garlic was used in medieval and Renaissance Europe to treat poisons, bites, edema, ulcers, toothaches, plague and smallpox. Albert Schweitzer used garlic in Africa to cure cholera and typhoid in the early 20th century. Garlic was widely used in Europe, especially England, to treat war wounds and dysentery during World War I. In modern Europe and the U.S. garlic supplements are widely used. There were at least 1,200 pharmacologic studies done on garlic by mid-1997, as well as many hundreds of studies on the chemistry of garlic. In the only double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial of a garlic product, stabilized allicin was used as the test substance. This paper was peer reviewed and published in 2001. Seventy active treatment patients and 72 placebo patients completed the 12-week study. Study participants took one capsule daily of allicin or placebo. Volunteers recorded their general well-being daily for 12 weeks, using a five-point scale on which 5 = well, no problems; 4 = well, with occasional sneeze, not disruptive to normal routine; 3 = can feel a cold coming on, some minor symptoms; 2 = feeling low and beginning to exhibit symptoms; 1 = full cold symptoms such as headache, sneezing, runny nose, tiredness. The results were impressive. The placebo group had 65 colds during the study. The allicin group had 24 colds. The average duration of symptoms (score 1 or 2) was 5.01 days for the placebo group, 1.52 days for the allicin group. The placebo group required an average of 5.63 days to recover, the allicin group 1.53 days. The total for days of infection was 366 for the placebo group, 111 for the allicin group. During the trial, 16 placebo group members had more than one cold, while only two of the allicin group had more than one cold. The “accelerated relief, reduction in the severity of troublesome symptoms ...and recovery to full fitness” as well as “reduced likelihood of becoming re-infected with other viral strains” clearly demonstrated the effectiveness of stabilized allicin against the common cold. And as Larry Lawson, one of the world’s premier experts on garlic has noted, it is primarily allicin and its metabolites that account for most of the amazing health benefits of garlic that have been discovered during 5,000 years of garlic use. Stabilized allicin is effective when taken orally or used topically.3

Menopause & Sexuality By Michelle Honda PhD For most women a shocking reality unfolds during the menopausal phase of their lives. What may have previously seemed incomprehensible, women discover they are no longer interested in sex, even those who prior to menopause enjoyed a healthy libido. At some stage in menopause our sex drive drops to an all time low because suddenly we are no longer thinking about sex. Our libido does start in the mind, yet this lack of desire is prompted by the decline of sex hormones produced by the ovaries. When menopause begins there is a falling off of specific hormones produced by the ovaries; estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. In order to experience sexual pleasure, all of these hormones, individually and collectively play a specific role in the act. Although not so recently the blame was placed on estrogen. We now know that even though levels of estrogen decrease, it is primarily to do with the decline of testosterone and progesterone - two major sex hormones.

ESTROGEN, PROGESTERONE AND TESTOSTERONE Estrogen is a complex hormone consisting of three forms – estrone (E1), estradiol (E2), estriol (E3). Each of these hormones performs a specific duty at various times in a woman’s life. Estradiol is the predominant hormone in women except during menopause when estrone is produced and estriol is the main form for pregnancy. There are many metabolic and structural female characteristics associated with estrogen. A brief example would include the contours of the female body, reduced muscle mass, decelerated height growth, increased metabolism, reproductive system, fluid balance and mental health. Progesterone balances out estrogen levels controlling estrogen dominance and is significant for the maintenance of the nervous system, as well as, several other body functions. This hormone is crucial in attempting to conceive and during pregnancy. Looking at progesterone fundamentally illustrates its role as a building block molecule for several other steroid hormones in the ovaries and adrenal glands. For instance, progesterone converts into testosterone, cortisol and some estrogens. Testosterone is produced naturally by the adrenal glands and ovaries. The importance of testosterone becomes very evident during menopause. This androgen type hormone increases sexual desire and sensitivity, enhances orgasm, increases energy levels, lightens breast tenderness and may stimulate bone formation for the treatment of osteoporosis.

SYMPTOMS OF HORMONE DEFICIENCIES Estrogen: symptoms attributing to estrogen deficiency include vaginal dryness, vaginal itching and bleeding, hot flashes and night sweats, disrupted sleep, breast atrophy and urinary problems. Testosterone: symptoms of testosterone deficiency include fatigue, weaker organisms, decreased libido, less sensitivity of the clitoris area and breast, less sexual enjoyment and depression. Progesterone: indicators of progesterone deficiency include diminished libido, mood swings, fatigue, uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, depression, irritability, water retention, headaches and memory loss.

SYMPTOMS ATTRIBUTING TO DIMINISHED DESIRE When coping with the symptoms of vaginal dryness, the cliché “no pain no gain’ most defiantly does not apply. To try and couple a joyful experience with the anticipation of pain will simply not marry together. Thinning vaginal walls result from a decline of estrogen which hampers blood flow to the pelvic area. This reduction of blood flow during intercourse also interferes with the much needed lubrication. An accepted fact is sex requires energy. Fatigue generally stems from two categories; an undernourished body which promotes lower functioning of the glands and organs being called upon at this time; plus the symptoms of menopause, such as, hot flashes, insomnia and mood swings.

NOURISH THE BODY FOR FATIGUE & LOW LIBIDO A well nourished body can change moods and raise libido to where once again you may enjoy your body’s feeling sensations. To remedy a tired body through dietary means, focus on whole, unadulterated foods like brown rice, quinoa, whole grains, high quality protein and fats (lean meat, fish, essential fatty acids, egg yolk, nuts and seeds). A staple would include lots of fresh fruits, vegetables and sprouts while minimizing sugar and simple carbs. Include a wide range of colour in your daily diet, keeping in mind below the ground veggies and not just the above ground varieties. Incorporate beets, turnips, radishes, onions, garlic, sweet potatoes and carrots. Go light on white potatoes and other starches or avoid altogether. Next to raw is always best, this way you are ensured the maximum amount of energy from the plant. Juicing is another great suggestion. Herbal plants are also very effective in restoring sexual desire by promoting ideal hormonal balance and function. They increase energy and stamina while alleviating menopausal symptoms. A few choices include maca root, ginseng and wild yam. Also address your thyroid gland. It plays a major role in hot flashes, energy and weight gain. The thyroid requires an iodine source daily in order to make thyroid hormone. Sea plants are excellent organic sources of iodine, such as, kelp, dulse and other seaweeds.

Effectiveness: Products are backed by clinical research. Quality and freshness: Products are made exclusively from fresh plants in accordance with GMP pharmaceutical standards.

DEPRESSION, INSOMNIA AND SELF-IMAGE To combat depressive feelings and sleepless nights, integrate safe herbs and homeopathic remedies into your daily routine or as needed. These suggestions are non addictive and will not interfere with normal sleep patterns when you no longer require them. Choose from any of the following: Herbs; St. John’s wort, valerian, skullcap, passionflower. Homeopathy; coffea, sepia, passiflora, nux vomica, ignatia, chamomilla. To further aid depression, in addition to revamping your diet, avoid sugary foods, chemicals and bad fats found in junk and processed foods. How we view ourselves can be critical. Apply only loving and accepting thoughts when you decide to examine your physical self from within or outward appearances. If you have an issue with weight gain, this can be remedied through a healthy weight loss program with appropriate exercise to fit your personal capabilities. Menopause does not have to be a time of endings but of new beginnings. Look at the freedoms this time of life affords you. If your future feels overwhelming, seek out professional help and surround yourself with positive people who make you feel optimistic and vital.

SOLUTIONS TO AID HORMONE DEFICIENCIES The first step is a basic screening test, now available to measure your individual hormone levels. This blood test is called FSH, which stands for follicle stimulating hormone. An FSH reading of above 1012 mlu/ml is an indicator of peri-menopause. Higher levels in the range of 30-40 designate menopause. Herbs have addressed women’s specific health challenges for many generations. Some plants are earmarked as hormone regulators and balancers, such as, maca root, chaste tree berry, black cohosh, wild yam, licorice root, dong quai and milk thistle seed. These herbs balance estrogen and progesterone activity and are rich in phytohormones, providing the hormonal precursors needed during menopause. These plants are nourishing to the body and specific glands implicated in boosting the libido. 444

HOMEOPATHY

Top Tips to Beat Acid Reflux Naturally By Raisa Weisspapir, HD, DHMS, MD (Europe) Acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic inflammation of the esophagus caused by abnormal back up of stomach liquid. Since this liquid contains acid, its contact with the sensitive lining of the esophagus causes a burning sensation in the chest or throat.

WHAT CAUSES GERD? A special muscular valve at the lower part of esophagus prevents stomach acid from backing up into the esophagus. If it doesn't work properly (opens spontaneously, or doesn't close tightly) the contents of the stomach goes up into the esophagus, causing acid reflux.

COMMON TRIGGERS The majority of heartburn symptoms are food and stress related. Below are just a few examples of things that might relax the esophogeal valve or prevent it from closing tightly: • Coffee, tea, sodas and chocolate • Eating large meals • Smoking • Tomato-based foods - pizza, spaghetti with tomato sauce, ketchup on your fries and cheeseburger, and tomato juices, will increase stomach acid. • Citrus Fruits (Clementines, Grapefruits, Lemons, Oranges, Tangerines) • Fatty and Fried Foods • Peppermint tea or Candy • Spicy Foods

Don't eat at least three hours before bedtime. This will help emptying of the stomach before you go into the reclined position and will prevent the reflux. Try to drink enough water each day to dilute the acid and normalize the pH balance in your stomach. Avoid heartburn foods for example: chocolate, greasy foods, fried foods, peppermint, spearmint, coffee, caffeinated beverages, alcohol, and soda pops. Reduce foods with a high level of acid that could irritate your esophagus like citrus fruits, orange juice and tomato juice. Take time to eat! Paying attention on what you have on your plate and participating mindfully while eating helps to enjoy your food! Chew slowly. Digestion process starts in your mouth by producing saliva rich with digestive enzyme amylase that breaks starch down into sugar. Stop smoking, because it slows down the production of saliva, stimulates the formation of stomach acid, and weakens and relaxes the esophageal valve. Avoid taking over-the-counter painkillers or other medications until they are prescribed by your doctor, as these might worsen your complaints. Reduce your stress because it slows down the emptying of your stomach, which may increase heartburn. Exercise, meditate, dance, laugh! Homeopathic treatment greatly relieves unpleasant painful heartburn, nicely heals the linings of your esophagus and releases stress. The holistic, individual approach of homeopathy helps to restore your emotional and physical balance harmoniously.3 For more information visit: www.homeopathytoronto.com.

SYMPTOMS OF GERD One of the main symptoms of acid reflux is painful, persistent heartburn, a burning sensation felt in the lower part of the mid-chest, behind your breastbone or in the throat. Other symptoms are: difficulty swallowing and nausea, a persistent cough or choking, morning hoarseness or needing to clear your throat frequently, chronic ear aches or sinusitis. Sometimes, it's difficult to realize what's wrong with a young child. Some symptoms of GERD in children are: persistent vomiting, regurgitation or excessive spitting up of the food, coughing, child may also become cranky and irritable, in extreme cases – a child might stop gaining weight.

TOP TIPS TO BEAT GERD NATURALLY Have smaller meals, but more frequent meals. Don't skip breakfast. Start your day with a wholesome breakfast, like a bowl of warm oatmeal with bran. Instead of coffee in the morning, try soothing slippery elm herbal tea. During the day have several healthy snacks of walnuts, almonds and fruits, like apples. The Need for Follow up with

Breast Thermography

By Alexander Mostovoy, HD, DHMS, BCCT Breast thermography is well known as a safe, non-radiation method of assessing a woman’s risk of breast cancer offering women the earliest possible warning that problems may be developing in her breasts. But, if thermography provides the earliest warning available, why is it so important to have a follow-up thermogram so soon after having the first test done… especially if the results are good A follow-up breast thermography may be useful for four main reasons: establishing a baseline, to track the direction of your breast health, to change a negative outcome, to evaluate the effects of therapies and interventions.

ESTABLISH A BASELINE Thermographic images of breasts are just like “thermal fingerprints,” and just like a fingerprint, it should stay relatively the same throughout your lifetime. The first examination done will be your baseline. All future examinations will be compared to this baseline, which will give us a good indication of positive or negative changes that may be occurring in your breasts over time. The baseline examination will be rated as low, medium or high risk based on an internationally accepted “TH” or thermographic scale of 1 to 5. Women with low risk findings will be asked to return for reexamination in 9-12 months where high risk women will be asked to come back in 3-6 months.

38 Healthy Directions October/November 2010

TRACK THE DIRECTION OF YOUR BREAST HEALTH Once your baseline is established, we are able to see which way you are heading with regards to risk of developing breast cancer. Three possible outcomes are possible: improvement, stability or higher risk than before. If the temperature difference between two points of reference becomes greater when compared to the baseline, it means that your breast health is not moving in the right direction. You might be asked to escalate to other structural tests, but even if these structural tests are negative, it will be important to take positive steps in preventing breast cancer, as abnormal or high risk findings with thermography is a very important factor in determining your future risk of developing breast cancer. Problem areas may simply be too small for other tests to detect at this very early stage. It takes 8-9 years of growth on the average for a tumor to be detected by a mammogram. However, studies have shown that a persistent abnormal thermogram carries with it a 22 times higher risk of future breast cancer. Once the level of risk is determined, women who are at higher risk are advised to be more careful and more vigilant with their own screening strategy.

CHANGE A NEGATIVE OUTCOME It’s true; a picture can say a thousand words. If subsequent examinations show that a woman may be moving in the wrong direction, it may give her the incentive needed to finally make those

HDOctNov2010_HealthyDirectionsTemplate 10-09-22 2:24 PM Page 39

life-style changes that can be life saving, and encourage her to be more vigilant in having regular breast screenings. We have seen time and time again the success of women who have simply changed their diets, added exercise to their daily routines, and/or have had their hormones balanced.

EVALUATE EFFECTS OF THERAPY & INTERVENTION Thermography is an objective way to evaluate if therapies or life style changes are actually working to reduce risk. Many women today are using natural or bio-identical hormone therapy which is in many cases very beneficial to their health. However, our experience shows that not all women react the same way even to bio-identical hormone treatment. Different women often will have different reactions. Blood levels may show improvement, symptoms may subside or even disappear, but in some cases, a thermographic examination will show that a woman’s breasts are responding in a negative way to these therapies. Breast thermography provides us with an excellent method of tracking any changes that may be occurring in the breast tissue and metabolism in response to hormone treatments. Thermography can also track positive changes to reassure women and their healthcare practitioners that they are making the right choices. It is always important to stay proactive and well informed in your own health care. In addition to your regular medical breast examinations, consider regular breast screening with thermography, the results could change your life.3 Alexander Mostovoy holds a doctorate in homeopathic medicine and is recognized as a leading authority on the application of clinical thermography. Since 1999, he has pioneered the use of breast thermography in his clinic in Toronto with a special interest in breast thermography and women’s health. He is also a founder and the CEO of Thermography Clinic Inc; a company that helps health professionals around the world integrate clinical thermography into their practices. Cruciferous Vegetables for

Women’s Health By Chakib Hammoud, Ph.D An estimated 173,800 new cases of cancer (excluding 75,500 non-melanoma skin cancers) and 76,200 deaths from cancer will occur in Canada in 2010 (Canadian Cancer Statistics 2010, Canadian Cancer Society and Statistics Canada). Overall, the cancer mortality rate has dropped by nearly 20% in females since 1981. Many researchers have turned to nutraceuticals to find help for prevention.

CRUCIFEROUS VEGETABLES FOR PREVENTION Cruciferous vegetables help maintain a strong immune system and healthy hormone levels for men and women. Maintaining healthy cells and healthy hormone levels plays a major roll in anti-aging strategy. Cruciferous works on modulating estrogen metabolism and induces liver detoxification enzymes to help neutralize the harmful hormones and potentially toxic estrogen-like environmental chemicals. Cruciferous found in cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprout, parsley, celery, kale, boch choy, turnip and apricot seeds provide glucosinolates, isothiocyanates, carnosic acid and carnosol. These multi phytonutrients stimulate our bodies to produce enzymes and destroy carcinogens. Studies proved that women and men who consume cruciferous, about three 1/2 cups per week are 50% less likely to develop colorectal cancer than those who never consume them (UCLA Medical center, Torrance, California). Another study by researchers has shown that men who consume cruciferous regularly, about 3-4 cups per week are 41% less likely to develop prostate cancer (Ref.-Fried Hutchison Cancer Research Center).

BREAST CANCER PREVENTION According to The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, scientists and researchers followed the diet of 6000 Oriental women, and found those with the highest intake of cruciferous vegetables had a lower risk of pre-

menopausal breast cancer than those who had the lowest intake. Cruciferous are some of the most effective phytonutrients in the fight and prevention of breast, prostate, lungs, bladder, colon, ovarian, pancreatatic cancer. Indole three carbinol (I3C) found in cruciferous vegetables also fight cystic fibrosis. I3C lowers the potential of cancer metastasis invasion and angiogenesis. Cruciferous vegetables are known to flush the body from metal and environmental toxins. Also help in reversing the heart damaging effect of diabetes. Cruciferous protects the skin from forming tumors and UV radiations.

REDUCES MENOPAUSAL SYMPTOMS Are your hormones adding inches to your waist and subtracting years of your life? Cruciferous vegetables are the best way to reduce your hot flashes, night sweats, loss of sleep and play a major roll in balancing hormones. Cruciferous are medically proven to be an anti-estrogenic and are also a proven way to reset your metabolism and reshape your body.3 Chakib Hammoud is a health advisor and formulator for national & international holistic practices. Getting to the Root of the Problem

Hair Loss in Women By Julia Fountain, BSc, ND

As you read this, 90% of the hair on your head is growing and 10% is just sitting pretty. Healthy hair grows for 4-6 years then enters a resting phase of 2-3 months before being shed. Most people shed about 100 hairs a day. Once a hair is shed the growth stage begins again as a new hair from the same follicle replaces the shed hair. New hair grows at a rate of approximately ½ inch per month. If your hair isn’t measuring up, consider some of these factors. Nutrient depletion, this is the most common cause of hair loss in women before the age of 50. Iron depletion is the first to consider but deficiencies of protein, essential fats, B vitamins and minerals, such as zinc, silica and boron can contribute. Nutrient depletion can be caused by poor diet (processed foods, picky eating), but also by chronic dieting, poor absorption or a very active, demanding lifestyle without nutrition keeping pace. The good news, once the deficiencies are corrected and diet improved, the hair will grow back. Hormone change is the most common cause of hair loss in women after menopause. A decline in estrogen and progesterone levels result in a relative excess of testosterone and its derivative, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT shortens the hair growth phase and shrinks the hair follicles. The production of DHT is regulated by an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase and natural substances, such as, beta-sitosterols, L-lysine and green tea extract are believed to act on this enzyme and decrease levels of DHT. Hair loss can also be a symptom of thyroid disease in women of all ages. Lack of thyroid hormone can result in poor mineral absorption which in turn can be reflected through hair. Thyroid disease may also speed up the conversion of testosterone to DHT in the hair follicle. Hair loss in women can also be a symptom of polycystic ovary syndrome in young women and this can be addressed through diet, lifestyle, weight loss and targeted supplementation. Women lose less hair during pregnancy as a larger percentage of hair follicles are in a growth phase. After a woman gives birth a large number of follicles shed hair at once. Hair typically returns to its normal fullness and growth cycle within a few months. If not, investigating nutritional and hormone status can be helpful. Severe or prolonged physical or emotional stress pushes large numbers of growing hairs into a resting phase. It may take 2-3 months after the stressful event for the hair to fall out. The hair typically grows back when the emotional or physical stress is resolved, though it may 6-9 months. For some people, intense stress may trigger a type of hair loss called alopecia areata. The immune system activates and white blood cells attack the hair follicle. Within weeks the affected hair falls out. The hair loss in this case may be patchy but eventually spread to the

44 Healthy Directions October/November 2010

whole scalp. The hair generally grows back, but the cycle may repeat itself. This autoimmune condition is diagnosed by a dermatologist. Some medications can contribute to hair loss such as the birth control pill, progestin-secreting IUD, beta blockers, NSAIDs (including ibuprofen), calcium channel blockers and some antidepressants. The hair loss may not be immediate but could appear 2-3 months after starting a new medication. Ringworm or fungal infections may infect the scalp and hair will fall out. Once infections are treated the hair will grow back. Some hair care products and hair styling techniques are harsh on the scalp. In particular, avoid products containing sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), a sudsing agent can irritate the scalp and hair follicles. Women with female-pattern baldness won’t appear to have a receding hairline, a bald spot or a bald head. Instead, they’ll have more diffuse hair loss evenly over the head. These women may be genetically more sensitive to the effects of DHT. Many factors can contribute to hair loss and it can be challenging getting to the root of the problem. A systematic evaluation of these factors can help determine if your hair loss is an expression of an imbalance or an expression of genetics. Once determined, some of these factors are easily corrected, others take time and persistence and yet others may continue to elude us.3 Julia Fountain, BSc, ND has been pioneering fresh, new approaches to keeping people healthy in a way that transcends the status quo. She has created, implemented and administered wellness programs for groups and individuals in a diverse range of facilities – from churches and schools to anti-aging clinics and destination spas. Choose Life

Grow Young with HGH From the landmark book Grow Young with HGH comes the most powerful, over-thecounter health supplement in the history of man. Human growth hormone was first discovered in 1920 and has long been thought by the medical community to be necessary only to stimulate the body to full adult size and therefore unnecessary past the age of 20. Recent studies, however, have overturned this notion completely, discovering instead that the natural decline of Human Growth Hormone (HGH), from ages 21 to 61 (the average age at which there is only a trace left in the body) and is the reason why the body ages and fails to regenerate itself to its 25 year-old biological age.

in the blood at the same levels HGH existed in the blood when we were 25 years old.

There is a receptor site in almost every cell in the human body for HGH, so its regenerative and healing effects are very comprehensive. Growth Hormone first synthesized in 1985 under the Reagan Orphan drug act, to treat dwarfism, was quickly recognized to stop aging in its tracks and reverse it to a remarkable degree. Since then, only the lucky and the rich have had access to it at the cost of $10,000 US per year.

The next big breakthrough was to come in 1997 when a group of doctors and scientists, developed an all-natural source product which would cause your own natural HGH to be released again and do all the remarkable things it did for you in your 20’s. Now available to every adult for about the Modern medical science now regards aging as price of a coffee and donut a day. a disease that is treatable and preventable and that “aging”, the disease, is GHR is available now, just actually a compilation of various in time for the aging Baby diseases and pathologies, like a rise Boomers and everyone else in blood glucose and pressure to from age 30 to 90 who diabetes, skin wrinkling and so on. doesn’t want to age but All of these aging symptoms can be would rather stay young, stopped and rolled back by beautiful and healthy all of maintaining Growth Hormone levels the time. The new HGH releasers are winning converts from the synthetic HGH users as well, since GHR is just as effective (for anti-aging) is oral instead of self-injectable and is very affordable.

GHR is a natural releaser, has no known side effects, unlike the synthetic version and has no known drug interactions. Progressive doctors admit that this is the direction medicine is going, to get the body to heal itself instead of employing drugs. GHR is truly a revolutionary paradigm shift in medicine and, like any modern leapfrog advance, many others will be left in the dust holding their limited, or useless drugs and remedies. It is now thought that HGH is so comprehensive in its healing and regenerative powers that it is today, where the computer industry was twenty years ago, that it will displace so many prescription and non-prescription drugs and health remedies that it is staggering to think of. The president of BIE Health Products, stated in a recent interview,“I’ve been waiting for these products since the 70’s”. We knew they would come, if only we could stay healthy and live long enough to see them! If you want to stay on top of your game, physically and mentally as you age, this product is a boon, especially for the highly skilled professionals who have made large investments in their education, and experience. Also with the state of the health care system in Canada which appears to be going into serious decline, it’s more important than ever to take pro-active steps to safeguard your health. Continued use of GHR will make a radical difference in your health. HGH is particularly helpful to the elderly who, given a choice, would rather stay independent in their own home, strong, healthy and alert enough to manage their own affairs, exercise and stay involved in their communities. Frank, age 85, walks two miles a day, plays golf, belongs to a dance club for seniors, had a girl friend again and doesn’t need Viagara, passed his drivers test and is hardly ever home when we call - GHR delivers. HGH is known to relieve symptoms of Asthma, Angina, Chronic Fatigue, Constipation, Lower back pain and Sciatica, Cataracts and Macular Degeneration, Menopause, Fibromyalgia, Regular and Diabetic Neuropathy, Hepatitis, helps Kidney Dialysis and Heart and Stroke recovery. With scissors, cut a piece of magnet that will fit inside the back of the keyboard key and peel off the backing. Then glue the magnet into the key with the magnetic end facing out. Repeat until you have made a handful of key magnets.

2. POP OFF THE KEYS

Pry off a series of keyboard keys that strike your fancy. Cut the peg in the back of each key so it is just slightly recessed from the back rim of the key.

HELPFUL HINT You can pop the keys off with your fingers, or if you want to be quick about it, pry them out with a screwdriver.

4. SCREW TO WALL

5. USE IT!

Fasten the panel to the wall with two screws. If you are installing it in a wall stud, drill two pilot holes. Otherwise, if you are installing it in drywall, you can just twist it right in.

Decorate your magnet board with pictures, papers, and random scraps to your heart’s content.

4 Emotional Types By Judith Orloff, MD To pin down your style of relating, it's helpful to know your emotional type – and that of your love partner. Your emotional type is the filter through which you both see the world – the default setting of your personality to which you each revert, especially under stress. Here are the four emotional types from Emotional Freedom, along with their upsides, downsides, and ways to balance them.

EMOTIONAL TYPE #1: THE INTELLECTUAL Qualities: You are bright, articulate, analytic, intellectually oriented, and often take refuge in your mind as the first line of coping. Upside: Extremely logical, comfortable with fixing problems logically and intellectually, great debater, able to stay calm in emotionally heated situations. Downside: Difficulty connecting with feelings -- others' and your own; give the impression of being snobby, withholding, or cold; obsess about problems; sometimes too serious. Balance Prescription: Spend more time in your physical/sensual self. Try breathing techniques, vigorous exercise, and practicing feeling the other person's emotions (empathizing).

EMOTIONAL TYPE #2: THE EMPATH Qualities: You are highly sensitive, naturally giving, spiritually attuned, and a good listener. Upside: Gifted healer, helper, and friend; passionate and sensual; intuitive about others' thoughts and feelings; emotionally responsive; in touch with your body and emotions. Downside: Easily absorb others' negativity; prone to anxiety, depression, and fatigue; easily feel hemmed in when living with others; difficulty setting boundaries with draining people. Balance Prescription: Use positive self-talk and logic to get grounded. Allow frequent quiet and meditation time. Learn to set clear limits and boundaries -- say no, take space, walk away, and protect yourself.

EMOTIONAL TYPE #3: THE ROCK Qualities: You are emotionally strong for self and others, practical, able to stay cool in a crisis, nonjudgmental.

Upside: Pillar of strength, consistent and loyal, giving, respectful, get along with nearly everyone. Downside: Can be detached from feelings; harbor anger and frustration; relationships may lack depth; don't make waves or invite challenges; rather avoid conflict than confront it. Balance Prescription: Practice activities that are spontaneous. Express a feeling a day. Initiate conversations that are emotional.

EMOTIONAL TYPE #4: THE GUSHER Qualities: You know your emotions and share them often, and are spontaneous, direct, and authentic. Upside: Emotionally articulate, easily forgiving, make and keep supportive networks of friends, value intimate relationships, process hard issues easily. Downside: Tend to be a drama king or queen, may turn friends into therapists, seek external feedback rather than relying on own intuition, excessive need to share. Balance Prescription: Practice activities that support and strengthen your self-sufficiency. Give yourself credit, learn to forgive yourself, and practice positive self-talk.3 Judith Orloff MD, a UCLA psychiatrist, is author of the New York Times bestseller Emotional Freedom: Liberate Yourself from Negative Emotions and Transform Your Life (Three Rivers Press, 2011 new paperback edition). THE PATH TO HAPPINESS

Maintaining Boundaries and Accepting Help During

Breast Cancer Treatment

F

c

By Linda Brown, B.A., ND, CBP, RhA I can remember the sinking feeling in my stomach when I received a diagnosis of breast cancer two years ago. My world was turned upside down. Quickly, however, my naturopathic training kicked in and I found myself sitting on my living room floor considering the resources I had at my disposal to address this diagnosis. I felt powerful and confident in my ability to deal with this. Then, I entered the world of allopathic medicine. At times, for brief moments, there was a temptation to turn off my brain and succumb to doing what I was told, despite the fact I am a health care professional. So, for me, the most important lesson I learned and the first one I want to share with you is this, you are in charge...of your health care and most importantly your body. So many times as women in this society we are fed messages that are in opposition to this. Please accept responsibility for being in charge of your own health. Certainly, as I did, gather up your resources. That leads me to my second point, trust yourself…trust your body. Your body knows what is best for you. You may not have previously practiced this but listen to your body and it will be your guide. Believe in your intuition, tune into your inner wisdom. This requires stillness. Take a moment from the busy-ness of your day to reflect and just be…and trust your gut. Don’t allow illness, life, or any person invade your space. Set your boundaries…and live by them. Take your place in the world, with a clear sense of what is acceptable to you and what is not. Make it clear and unmistakable. 50 Healthy Directions October/November 2010

Far too often as women, we have grown up with the edicts “be seen and not heard,” or “don’t rock the boat,” as if what we have to say has no importance. Well, I’m here to tell you that bottled-up, suppressed emotions simmer until they come to a rolling boil, and then blow, manifesting mentally or physically. Express your emotions…for your own health and sanity, and that of those around you. Accept love, accept help. You don’t have to be a super woman, doing it all single-handedly. If there are people around you, they can lend a hand. If someone offers help, accept it. Accepting help is not a sign of weakness. Giving and receiving love can change the world. And last…embrace illness with love, for the lessons it teaches. Don’t think of sickness as the enemy against which you must battle, for you strengthen what you oppose. Shift gears, and see illness as the guide that it is. Thank it. Be open to its messages. Live in balance and harmony with all life and nature, and strive to see the oneness of all. Sometimes it takes great tragedy to come to these realizations…or you can choose to learn from those who have already been there.3 Linda L. Brown, B.A., ND, CBP, RhA is a Naturopathic Doctor and Registered Holistic Allergist in Woodbridge, ON. She has an eclectic practice, focusing on allergy elimination, food sensitivity testing, BodyTalk, Emotional Freedom Technique, and Soul-Mind-Body connection.
