Work Perks
FIND A SUMMER JOB FOR YOUR TEEN IN CONNECTICUT
When school is out, teens can keep their learning going by taking on a summer job. For many adolescents,a summer job sets the stage for the rest of their professional life as they discover early on where their strengths lie in the workplace.
Where to Work
BY ALYSSA SEIDMANIn Connecticut, teens can begin working as early as 14 years old, but require working papers until they are 18. During non-school weeks, such as summer break, those between the ages of 16 and 17 are permitted to work eight hours per day, and up to 48 hours per week. Additionally, teens 16 and older may be employed in a restaurant or public dining room.
One advantage of working a summer job is it can serve as a trial run for your teen if they’re unsure about pursuing a certain career path in the future. Be it business, education, the arts, sciences, or hospitality, there are plenty of places in CT that are looking to hire young people and set them on a path to success.
Museums
Summer
Camps
Many museums in CT offer the opportunity for youths to volunteer This can be especially useful for a child who is interested in the arts, sciences, or history (depending on the museum), giving them the chance to flex their knowledge in a tangible way. While completing tasks for administrators or leading patrons through the museum’s curated halls, your teen will develop invaluable skills that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Plus, potential employers would be very impressed to see a museum of such stature on their resume For more information, input “volunteer at museums in CT” into Google
The obvious choice for a summer job, summer camps serve as a home away from home where children can find their second family. With camaraderie and fun at the forefront at these institutions, teens and tweens have the opportunity to act as role models while working as a counselor or counselor-in-training, respectively Oftentimes camps include specialty classes on the daily schedule, giving campers a chance to engage in arts & crafts, athletics, and other activities. If your child has a vested interest in one of those, they may be best suited to serve as a class instructor. Teens and tweens who are interested in education would benefit from working at camp since the day-to-day includes keeping campers on track with tasks, managing their relationships with one another, and ensuring each one feels safe, validated, and heard. For more information, visit www.simplyhired.com, and input “summer camp” and “Connecticut” into the respective search bars
Country Clubs
Speaking from experience, there is truly nothing like working at a country club during the summer months. Since Connecticut is a popular destination this time of year, it’s likely local country clubs will need some extra help to attend to all the members who are boating, golfing, and celebrating on the shoreline. If your teen enjoys any of the aforementioned activities, encourage them to apply.
Gaining experience on the water, on the floor of a
dining room, or on the green will work in their favor, and they’ll be able to make some money while doing so. In the case where a country club accepts international interns like mine did, this could be a great opportunity to expose your child to people from all over the globe. While working alongside them, they will not only learn about different world cultures, but form formidable friendships in the process. For more information, input “part-time country club jobs in CT” into Indeed

Kingswood is a family-run camp Our 70-person staff includes 20 professional educators and has more than 700 years of camp experience As one parent commented, “The genuine connection between staff, counselors, and campers is quite obviously the hallmark of Kingswood. The ‘family feel’ of the camp is what makes it so appealing.”
At Kingswood, we promise that “no boy will slip through the cracks.” As one parent noted, “Our favorite thing is that everyone knows our son, but more than that, they know what he enjoys and what makes him tick!”
Kingswood is located on the shore of a pristine and undeveloped lake, nestled in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. With trails departing from our campus, the Appalachian Trail just down the road, and a lake almost all to ourselves, our setting is perfect for watersports, fishing, camping, and hiking.
The Kingswood program is dynamic. Campers are in charge of their schedule and choose from a wide variety
of options every day Sports, trips, waterfront, music and art, and much, much more.
But campers also have plenty of supervised free time to hang out with their friends.
Lamenting the hurried and pressured lives many children now live, one parent said, “When do our children ever get to be kids? I loved watching the boys play pick-up soccer, ping pong, and Frisbee golf It seemed that the only thing stopping the boys was the ensuing darkness. I only wish the rest of our world would catch up with Kingswood and realize what a great gift it is to be a kid.”
Kingswood offers two-, three-, four-, and seven-week sessions for boys ages 8-15 starting June 23, and running through Aug. 10

Campers go home at the end of their stay with newfound or improved skills in activities such as sailing, water skiing, camping, wood shop, tennis, basketball, horseback riding, archery, riflery, nature and campcraft, first aid, team sports, swimming, canoeing, and kayaking, as well as substantive knowledge and terminology that goes along with the excitement of those accomplishments.

Camp Sloane
Knowing the right age to send your child off to sleepaway camp is a question that is asked of camp directors every day Rhino Merrick, director of Camp Sloane YMCA in Lakeville, Conn., offered advice to parents who are wrangling with the idea of their child’s first sleepaway experience.
“Really, there are two important and simple steps for parents,” Merrick said. “First is to chat with your child about camp When the camper is excited about the idea of going away to camp, that will be a good indicator that they’re ready.”
The next step is critical, according to Merrick, a longtime camp director. “You need to find a camp that matches your families’ values,” he said.
Merrick suggests speaking to camp directors and asking about their camp’s philosophy, what their licensing and accreditation status is, and how many campers and staff the camp has.
Camp Sloane YMCA is everything that kids are looking for in a summer camp. It has a rich history of creating magical memories for campers, combining traditional camp activities with modern twists. The range of activities – from sailing and horseback riding to climbing and dance lessons – allows campers to embrace the spirit of adventure and camaraderie
Days at Camp Sloane YMCA are filled with fun activities and great new friends while the nights come alive with fireside stories, lightning bugs, and s’mores. Campers don’t just “go to camp” when they spend their summer at Sloane
they embark on a journey that will shape memories to last a lifetime.
Sleepaway camp should always be this good, and Sloane’s counselors – who come from all over the world – are excited to welcome your child to Camp Sloane this summer!

Day camp keeps kids moving, exploring, and learning all summer long
At the end of the summer, families want to hear their child say they had “the best summer ever.” YMCA Camp Shore makes that happen by keeping campers active, engaged, and healthy all summer long.
Director of Youth Development Britney Bruno says, “Camp Shore offers fun and unique experiences to explore the outdoors, meet new friends, and create memories. Having opportunities to unplug and gain important life skills are important ingredients in building stronger kids, families, and communities. Through our Financial Assistance program, no child is turned away for their inability to pay for camp.”
Summer is the ideal time for kids to get out and explore But for some kids summer means no access to recreational, social, or educational activities. As a result, some kids can experience learning loss, increased anxiety, and gain weight twice as fast than during the school year.
“It’s imperative that kids stay engaged socially and physically throughout the summer,” Bruno said. “At camp, kids are in a welcoming environment where they belong They build relationships, develop character, and discover their potential.”
Bruno said there are five reasons to attend camp:
1. ADVENTURE: Camp Shore offers a wide variety of new experiences and a chance to explore the outdoors
2. HEALTHY FUN: Day camp offers fun, stimulating activities that engage the body and mind, and help campers learn the importance of nutrition.
3. PERSONAL GROWTH: Campers have a chance to learn new skills and develop confidence by taking on new responsibilities and challenges.
4. FRIENDSHIPS: Amid the fun camp games, swimming, and tower climbing, campers meet new friends and strengthen existing friendships.
5. MEMORIES: Camp is an unforgettable experience that gives campers memories to last a lifetime
