C.I.T. PROGRAMS ARE A WAY TO TRANSITION INTO FULL TIME CAMP COUNSELORS
We are the C.I.T.’s so pity us!” begins the humorous song from the early 1980’s comedy “Meatballs,” starring Bill Murray, which chronicles madcap adventures at a sleepaway summer camp
While the song laments the downtrodden journey of the movie’s “C.I.T.’s,” or counselors-in-training, the real life C.I.T. experience for Connecticut high schoolers is much more fun.
Whether your child has spent years attending a local camp or wants to try their hand at learning to be a camp counselor, there are tons of options out there.
Benefits of Being a C.I.T.
There are many positives to add to your children’s lives from the C.I.T. experience. Normally, these opportunities are offered to students beginning the summer they graduate eighth grade through the summer after they conclude their junior year. These ages and grade levels can vary depending on the organization.
In addition to other positives, often, the cost for your teen to participate can be much lower than the standard summer camp fees
C.I.T. opportunities can be as diverse as your teenagers’ interests, and in many cases, they can choose the age group they would like to work with.
These work experiences can help your teenager build their resumes as well as contribute to those all-important college applications
In addition, they often involve a lot of time outdoors and exerting themselves in physical activity which can add to overall health. These summer camp experiences also help teach your teens problem solving skills with their younger peers, encourage responsibility and independence Yet another great side product of the C.I.T. experience is it develops meaningful relationships withs supervisors and camp managers
who can serve as mentors and important character references
For teens, the benefits of being a C.I.T. are physical, emotional, academic and educational. But especially in cases where teens continue their years of attending a beloved camp by becoming counselors in training, they get to make that experience just as special for the next generation.

ALOHA PARENT 2023
I value the opportunity our daughter has at Aloha to learn new things and try new activities in a supportive environment. This is more and more rare in this day and age when ‘stars’ are determined at young ages, which can stop kids who are a little older from even trying new things. At camp, they can try tennis or sailing for the first time and know that it’s okay and fun to be learning.
His independence grew tremendously, and his self-confidence did as well. He also forged friendships that he wants to nourish and maintain, and which we hope will be lifetime friendships. We see growth in his social skills as well in terms of how he functions in our family and with his friends at school. LANAKILA PARENT 2024
Thanks to Hive, our daughter has blossomed into an independent and confident kid who has strong friendships with others. She has truly adored every minute she has spent at camp, and reminisces about it all year long.

CAMP SLOANE
EMBARKING ON AN UNF OR GETT ABLE SUMM ER A D VENTURE
Knowing the right age to send your child off to sleepaway camp is a question that is asked of Camp Directors every day. Rhino Merrick, director of Camp Sloane YMCA in Lakeville, CT gives advice to parents who are wrangling with the idea of their child’s first experience
“Really, there are two important and simple steps for parents”, Merrick says. “First is to chat with your child about camp. When the camper is excited about the idea of going away to camp, that will be a good indicator that they are ready.”
The next step is critical, according to Merrick, a long-time camp director “You need to find a camp that matches your families’ values”. He suggests speaking to camp directors and asking about camp philosophy, what their licensing and accreditation status is and how many campers and staff the camp has.
Camp Sloane YMCA is everything that kids are looking for in a summer camp They have a rich history of creating magical memories for campers, combining traditional camp activities with modern twists. The choice of activities—everything from
sailing to horseback riding, to climbing and dance lessons—allows campers to embrace their spirit of adventure and camaraderie
Days at Camp Sloane YMCA are filled with fun activities and great new friends, while the nights come alive with fireside stories, lightning bugs and s’mores. Campers don’t just ‘go to camp’ when they spend their summer at Sloane
THEY EMBARK ON A JOURNEY THAT
WILL
SHAPE MEMORIES TO LAST A LIFETIME.
Sleepaway camp should always be this good and the Sloane counselors, who come from all over the world, are excited to welcome your child to Camp Sloane this summer! Visit www. campsloane.org for more information.

Weknow that our daughters feel the many pressures of being a child, especially a girl, in the world we live in today They are accomplished and driven yet often lack confidence in themselves. As parents, we want to provide them with the tools they need to be confident, connected, independent, strong, and happy- now and in their future That’s why the camp experience Fleur de Lis provides is such an incredible gift that we can give our daughters.

NEW CANAAN PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY
A HEALTHY SMIL E ST ARTS EARLY
What do you think is the most common chronic childhood disease?
Here’s a hint: it’s a disease that occurs as early as six months of age. It goes beyond pain and infection. It can affect speech and communication, sleeping and breathing, learning, playing and quality of life, even into adulthood. The answer is tooth decay!! According to the Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, tooth decay, or caries, is the most common chronic childhood decay, surpassing asthma, childhood obesity, hay fever and even childhood diabetes.
Is this most common chronic childhood disease preventable? The answer is YES!!
This is where we come in!! Why choose a pediatric dentist? As a parent, you send your son or daughter to a pediatrician for a good reason. And it’s the same reason your child’s oral health should be managed by a pediatric dentist. We’re specially trained to provide oral healthcare for children from birth through adolescence Did you know that beyond our college education and 4 years of dental school, we do an additional two years getting certified in pediatric dentistry? In some instances, and during that time, we work closely with pediatricians and ENTs as part of our educational experience, and growth. We also regularly take continuing education courses that enable us to use the latest tools and techniques to better care for your children. Our focus is on prevention and early detection which allows for simple and conservative treatment. This in turn helps us to calm fears and anxieties, eliminate discomfort, and promote healthy oral care habits children will use at home
We help your children love coming to the dentist!! Let’s all work together to prevent tooth decay by raising awareness of oral hygiene, nutrition, fluoride and the importance of regular dental visits!!
New Canaan Pediatric Dentistry is located at 65 Locust Ave #10 in New Canaan. Visit www.newcanaanpediatricdentistry.com for more information.

FAMILY IS AT THE ‘HEART’ CONNECTICUT DANCE
Connecticut Dance, under the artistic direction of Andrea Stratford, has offered high-quality dance instruction for 35 years. Conveniently located in Monroe at the intersection of routes 59 and 25, the studio hosts dancers from Monroe, Easton, Trumbull, Newtown, Bethel, Fairfield, Oxford, Stratford, and Shelton. Classes are available for ages 2 and up, and include creative dance, ballet, jazz, hip-hop, tap, lyrical, pointe, and modern.
Connecticut Dance is a non-competitive studio and provides the best of both worlds, as classes are available for both the recreational and the serious dancer Dancers and families can dance for fun and enjoy classes once a week, while other dancers who plan to further pursue their love and passion for the art can be found at the studio multiple times a week.
Our graduates have gone on to dance for Division 1, college-level dance teams, and even dance professionally in New York City. Each season our dancers are featured in a professional-level recital production at the Klein Memorial Auditorium.
More important, however, is the community and family at the heart of the dance school. Dancers perform throughout the year at local charity events and fundraisers, as well as an annual showcase to raise money for local families in need.
Students rally together to plan bake sales and spirit weeks in their efforts to fundraise, and truly realize they’re a part of something much bigger and more special. During crazy hair and socks weeks, pajama weeks, Halloween parties, holiday games, and more, our dancers develop lifelong friendships.
Regardless of level, age, and ability, all students (and their families) can ultimately find a true home in Connecticut Dance. For more information, visit www.connecticutdance.com.
