Best Hotel: Beachside Digs that Beat Out Airbnb The Madison Beach Hotel was built in the early 1800s as a rooming house for shipbuilders. Longtime residents Ric and Dawn Duques purchased and redeveloped the property, which reopened in May 2012. Their goal was to express their pride for Madison through the new resort, which celebrates the town’s architectural splendor and spirit of hospitality. Today, Distinctive Hospitality Group, an affiliate of the Curio Collection by Hilton, manages the hotel. Its signature Grassy Strip Summer Concert Series is a beloved annual event, and its Epicurean
Series allows locals to meet and dine with celebrity chefs. “Madison Beach Hotel offers shoreline families a place to explore and create memories,” Distinctive’s Director of Marketing Jennifer Kushner Pfeiffer said. “The hotel proudly supports community-based organizations, including Madison Emergency Medical Services, the Madison Food Pantry, and an Earth Day cleanup with local schools.” The hotel has received numerous fivestar reviews on Google, one of which remarked on its “perfect” location that gives way to “beautiful sunsets from the beach.” Pfeiffer thanked the voters who voted for Madison Beach Hotel as one of the best on the Shoreline.

Best Museum: Appreciation for the Arts
The Spectrum Art Gallery in Centerbrook showcases representational and abstract painting, mixed media, sculpture and photography, and fine artisanal crafts. It is no stranger to the “Best of Shoreline” contest, having been named one of Connecticut’s best galleries for several years running. The organization enriches the Shoreline community through a wide range of on- and off-site programming. Its curations provide a platform for local and regional artists to share their works, and it offers art classes and workshops for all skill levels. The Gallery offers an elegant, peaceful, and refined ambiance that is the perfect backdrop for the original artwork on view there. Guests often remark feeling inspired and connected when visiting the space, particularly after engaging with Spectrum’s friendly and knowledgeable staff. “This award is not just a testament to our dedication to the arts, but underscores our bond with the communities we serve,” Gallery Director Barbara Nair said.
The Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme was founded in 1936. Its grounds served as one of the most famous art colonies in the country during the early 20th century. Just before Griswold’s death in 1937, an association was formed to preserve the mansion as an art museum. Today it operates on 12 riverfront acres, which encompass historic gardens, the Robert F. Schumann Artists’ Trail, and a seasonal outdoor café. The museum provides a place of respite and reflection, with thought-provoking exhibitions and educational programs that inspire. It offers many free events for the community throughout the year, including an outdoor concert series, yoga in the gardens, and the Midsummer Festival each July. The education team also does outreach year-round to bring art programs to schools, shelters, and senior living facilities within the community. “We are grateful that the voters recognize the value of the arts in our state and enjoy visiting us year after year,” Marketing Associate Emily L. Clark said.

Fall Fun Fall is officially in full swing, but soon enough, we’ll be donning our Halloween costumes and breaking out the family recipes to get stuffed for Thanksgiving. If you feel the days falling away like the leaves on the trees, fear not! Connecticut’s Shoreline offers plenty to do to embrace the spirit of the season.
What’s fall without a pumpkin patch to pick through? In East Haven, you’ll have a spooktacular time exploring the grounds of The Shore Line Trolley Museum, packed with perfectly plump sugar pumpkins. Take a trolley ride or a self-guided tour of the trolley barns as you sip on some apple cider. There’ll also be a scavenger hunt for kids, coloring stations, face painting, and seasonal decorations all around. The pumpkin patch at The Shore Line Trolley Museum is open every weekend in October. Staying satiated on the Shoreline is easy, given the broad array of businesses you can patronize. The small-town charm of these local establishments calls back to a simpler time, but their sweet and savory offerings are trendsetters in their own right. After all, they were voted ì Best Ofî for a reason. The winners in this yearí s ì Tastebuds & Provisionsî category provide much more than good eats and drinks. Their spaces are gathering places where friends, family, and community members can catch up over delightful food and beverages, be it morning, noon, or night. In Guilford, Bishop’s Orchards Farm Market & Winery has all the makings for a perfect autumn day. Pick your own apples or pumpkins in the crisp fall air, or select a fresh treat from the fully-stocked Farm Market. Take a try at the seasonal corn maze before getting lost; if you do, you must answer a series of trivia questions to make your way through. There are plenty of family-friendly activities to enjoy, but if you visit with friends, head to Bishop’s award-winning winery. The Main Orchard is located at 1355 Boston Post Road in Guilford. For more information, call 203-453-2338 or visit WWW.BISHOPSORCHARDS.COM . Through Oct. 29, Scott’s Yankee Farmer in East Lyme invites you to navigate its Swamp Adventure corn maze. Celebrate your journey by picking your own apples or pumpkins, taking a wagon ride, buying a few mums, or savoring a freshly made apple cinnamon donut (or two). Scott’s Yankee Farmer is located at 436 Boston Post Road in East Lyme. For more information or to purchase tickets for the corn maze, visit WWW. SCOTTSYANKEEFARMER.NET. Some Shoreline towns will be sprinkled with scarecrows this season as residents try their hand at decorating their own. The Branford Garden Club’s 13th annual Scarecrows on the Green event invites community members to create and build spooky scarecrow displays. You can view these festive exhibits from Oct. 13 through Nov. 7. The green is located at 1011 Main St. in Branford. The Arbor Garden Club of Clinton is sponsoring its second annual Scarecrow Contest this month, giving local businesses, civic groups, clubs, organizations, families, and individuals the chance to participate in some friendly competition. Awards will be bestowed based on the following categories: Best Depiction, Funniest, Scariest, and Most Original. The club will announce the winners on Halloween. The Madison Chamber of Commerce is challenging residents to create scarecrows for its 14th annual Scarecrows Invade Madison! event. The completed crows will stand guard in KeyBank Courtyard until All Hallows’ Eve, when the winners will be announced. The crows are located at 724 Boston Post Road in Madison. Head to the New England Fall & Halloween Festival at the Westbrook Outlets on Oct. 21 to celebrate the best of what the region has to offer. Enjoy games and activities, costume contests, an artisan and crafters market, entertainment, trick-or-treating, a free matinee movie, food trucks, craft beers and wines, and so much more. It all kicks off at 10 a.m. Historic downtown Ivoryton will once again host its beloved Pumpkin Festival on Sunday, Oct. 29. Kids and kids at heart will participate in a costume parade, which steps off from the corner of Walnut and Main streets. The parade concludes at the Ivoryton Village Green, where fall festivities will follow. For more information, visit WWW.ESSEXCT.GOV/PARK-AND-RECREATION . To view the Shoreline’s fall foliage in style, take a ride on the Essex Steam Train. The journey consists of a 12-mile, narrated round-trip into the heart of the unspoiled Connecticut River Valley, designated as “one of the last great places on earth” by the Nature Conservancy. With four locations in Fairfield County, Little Pub – Old Saybrook is the business’ sole Shoreline stronghold. The restaurant opened in Old Saybrook in 2018 and, over the years, has become a favorite meeting spot among community members. Little Pub offers a fun, family-friendly gathering place with great food, generous drinks, and a lively pub atmosphere. Guests often remark on the business’ friendly service, creative menu, and great value, Owner Douglas Grabe said. “We exist to make people happy, and winning these types of awards is very gratifying,” he added. “We hope to see you at Little Pub - Old Saybrook soon!”
Best Cocktails & Bar: Shoreline Sips that are Shaken and Stirred A newcomer to the Shoreline’s nightlife scene is 1928 Cocktail Club, which opened in Branford in June 2022. Over the past year, the speakeasy has grown immensely, primarily through social media and word-of-mouth referrals, setting a high bar with unrivaled hospitality, attentive service, and consistently delicious craft cocktails. “We supply the local community with a safe place to enjoy their night with friends and family,” Owner/Operator Frank Dean said. “We also have become a destination for ʻout of towners’, which helps our local restaurants and shops.” The flavor and presentation of 1928’s curated cocktails often receive positive feedback from guests. Soon, the speakeasy will offer a series of cocktail and wine classes and product education events, allowing patrons to uncover the secrets of its mixologists, Dean said. “When we opened, there was chatter that a cocktail bar could never work on the Shoreline, but I believe our voters think otherwise,” he added. “As we continue to grow and learn, we plan to help other bars and restaurants in the area get back to the level of hospitality the community deserves.” >>

The theater enjoyed a fantastic inaugural year of sold-out performances in 2022-23 and recently announced its lineup for the 2023 fall season. The venue not only showcases the talents of academy students, but also features programming from other theater companies, stand-up comedy nights, and seasonal exhibitions. Spooks & Scares If you’re looking for something with a little more fright, join the CT Ghost Hunters as they investigate the Essex steam train, station grounds, and Deep River station property during Boos & Brews. This paranormal adventure includes a complimentary brew and appetizers at Essex station. The Ghost Hunters will then give you a tutorial on using their equipment before the haunt begins. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit WWW.ESSEXSTEAMTRAIN.COM/EXPERIENCES. If you’d prefer to do some solo ghost hunting, head to Deep River Public Library. Some say that a part of the original building — built in 1881 — is haunted. The building initially served as the home of Richard Pratt Spencer and his family but was converted into a library in 1933. Disembodied voices, eerie noises, and the presence of invisible entities have all been reported there. Legend says Satan himself has been seen playing his fiddle near the top of the falls at Devil’s Hopyard State Park in East Haddam. People have also reported seeing dark shadows in the woods, mists, and orbs, hearing demonic voices and laughter, and having strong, uneasy feelings under the fall of night. For a complete list of haunted places in and around the Shoreline, visit WWW.CTHAUNTEDHOUSES.COM.
Here for the Boo’s Getting scared can sometimes leave you feeling parched, so quench your thirst at any of these Shoreline watering holes. Thimble Island Brewing Company in Branford offers more than 20 rotating taps in its tasting room and brews everything in-house. Seasonal sips include a Dark Pumpkin Porter, a Triple Ghost West Coast IPA, and a Märzen-style Oktoberfest lager. Enjoy your beer with a bite from the brewpub, or take your provisions to-go! The brewery is located at 16 Business Park Dr. in Branford. East Haddam offers a place to sample the best of both worlds. Yankee Cider Company specializes in crafting New England-style hard ciders from homegrown apples. Staehly Farms also grows an assortment of other fruits that, sooner or later, become award-winning wines. Seasonal sips include Caramel Cider Donut Hard Cider, Spiced Apple Wine, Harvest Blend Wine, and Pumpkin Wine. The taproom is located at 23 Petticoat Ln. in East Haddam. Overshores Brewing Company in East Haven has built a reputation for creating high-quality beers, combining traditional style with smallbatch innovation. Its Belgian-style beers are just a few of the products

you’ll find in its cooperative brewing space, also known as The Beeracks. The taproom is located at 250 Bradley St. in East Haven. Niantic Public House prides itself on bringing craft beer and chill vibes to the Shoreline community. Its taproom has over 20 offerings to choose from, as well as soft drinks, seltzers, and juice for the mocktail and under-21 crowd. The business is located at 243 Main St. in Niantic.
Other Attractions Spook up your space with some vintage decor after perusing the shelves and stockpiles in any of the Shoreline’s antique stores. Just be sure to visit Edwin C. Ahlberg Antiques in Guilford and Old Saybrook Antiques Center. Ahlberg specializes in formal American and high-style country furniture, paintings, and accessories and has been family-owned and operated since 1906. Antiques Center offers a wide variety of items, including antique and vintage furniture, pottery, porcelain, glassware, estate jewelry, silver, and fine art. SJ Shop in Guilford will host a Halloween Spooktacular Car Show on Oct. 21 from 1-5 p.m. Feast your eyes on makes and models from almost every decade; there’ll be bikes and motorcycles, too. Bring the whole family to enjoy food trucks, a DJ, a spooky indoor walkthrough, raffles, prizes, giveaways, and more. The shop is located at 1700 Boston Post Road in Guilford. On Sunday, Oct. 29, the Eastern Connecticut Ballet will serve up a mix of boo-tiful dancing, clever costumes, and a chance for young audiences to participate in the fun. The Spooktacular combines bewitching ballet, classical music, and special effects to create a spirited performance, perfect for families of all ages. The Kate is located at 300 Main St. in downtown Old Saybrook. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit WWW.THEKATE.ORG.

Best Indian Restaurant: Take Your Tastebuds on a Trip Although Darbar India has been serving the Shoreline for almost 30 years, it remains an exciting place to visit. Last year, the restaurant relocated to a new storefront in Branford, allowing the owners to create a fresh and vibrant atmosphere. This local eatery has even gone viral for its unique food offerings, like Chicken Tikka Masala Pizza and Indian tacos, garnering the attention of foodies near and far. “Our restaurant is more than just a place to eat — it’s a community hub where people come to cele-
brate, unwind, and enjoy Indian cuisine,” Owner Haresh Nariyani said. “We’re proud to offer dishes that cater to [various] dietary needs, including vegetarian and gluten-free options.” The support from the community has enabled Darbar’s staff to continue to push culinary boundaries while remaining true to their roots, Nariyani added. Diners consistently remark on its authenticity, innovation, and friendly and welcoming service. The owner suggests readers stay tuned to the restaurant’s social media pages for announcements on new and exciting menu items.
Best Diner: Classic Fare to Fill You Up Another longstanding staple in Shoreline cuisine, Twin Pines Diner, located in East Haven, has been owned and operated by the same owners for over 40 years. In 2014, its dining room expanded to seat 225 diners, with the addition of a private room. When they’re not busy feeding the community, the owners are frequently involved

in supporting local community causes. This earned Twin Pines the 2023 Community Partner Award from the East Haven Rotary and recognition from the Connecticut General Assembly. “Customers are very happy when they come here and often tell the managers, ʻDon’t change anything,’” Co-Owner Dimitrios Triantis said. “We at Twin Pines would like to thank our customers for their loyalty and for voting for us again and again.” >>

Satiate Your Sweet Tooth Founded in 1979, Ashley’s Ice Cream boasts five locations on the Shoreline. It was named after Ashley Whippet, the famous frisbee-catching dog. The shops serve up all-natural ice cream made with the freshest ingredients — even the whipped cream, hot fudge, and baked waffle cones are made in-house.
Ashley's has been voted a “Best of the Shoreline” winner every year since the contest’s inception, and owner Brian Anderson believes this consistency is why an increasing number of out-of-town visitors flock to the shops every year. He continued, “The ʻBest of the Shoreline’ section is great for businesses that are highlighted within it and has helped Ashley's become one of the best and most trusted [ones] to visit!” CONTINUE ON PAGE 26

Best Mexican Cuisine: Taco-bout Good Eats Pica Chica Tacos started as a food truck in the middle of the pandemic. It succeeded despite COVID shuttering many businesses’ doors and opened its first brick-and-mortar location in Clinton. The Mexican-driven menu draws inspiration from Tex-Mex cuisine with masterful tweaks to appease East Coast palates. “Customers say they can taste how fresh and authentic our food is — just about everything we serve is made fresh daily,” Owner Mari Lee said. Lee said Pica Chica could not exist without the Clinton community’s support, which is why the restaurant makes sure to give back to as many local charities as possible. The owner added that she is humbled that locals voted her family-owned business among this year’s “Best of Shoreline” winners. “We are very fortunate to live in an area with so many great options for dining and entertaining,” she said. “I especially want to thank all my fellow restaurant owners who, from the inception of Pica Chica Tacos, continue to support us in every way.”
“WE HAVE BEEN TOLD WE HAVE THE BEST FISH TACOS ON THE SHORELINE, AND PEOPLE OFTEN COMMENT THAT THEY WISH THEYʼD FOUND US SOONER.” Customers tout Pica Chica Tacos as the best fish tacos on the Shoreline. Photo: Pica Chica Tacos
