ILLUMINATE YOUR HOME IN STYLE By Gretchen A. Peck

Lighting is, most of all, functional, but it can also add color, texture and personality to a space

W

hether you’re building a new home or giving a current residence a refreshing renovation, lighting is a key element to interior design. Rachel Calemmo began her professional career as an interior designer. She was working for a large firm in Philadelphia when she decided to focus her future on lighting design. “I went to work for a firm that had architects, interior designers and lighting designers, and I worked under a lighting designer for a bit. … After many more years working for other firms, I decided to go out on my own,” she recalled. “I had the good fortune of working on the lighting design for a home in Scarsdale, and the project was big enough that it became a jumping-off point to start my own company.” She’s the co-owner of Christian Rae Studio, LLC, based in Fairfield, Connecticut. “Then, my husband, who is an architect, joined me in the business a few years after that, and we’ve slowly grown, bringing on other architects. Now, all of our projects incorporate lighting design, and I also consult with other

architects and designers in the area,” she said. Calemmo also works directly with homeowners. Most of the company’s clients are based in Fairfield County, but they’ve also traveled to Westchester County, Litchfield County, New York City and Long Island for projects. Asked how she approaches designing an interior space, Calemmo explained how a home’s architectural style is certainly a consideration. “The next most important thing is décor,” Calemmo said. “Where and how is the furniture placed in the space? How will those spaces be used? Are there any specialty finishes or artwork on the walls, where we might want to add an accent or highlight? We want to have both ambient and accent lighting covered, but also incorporate decorative lighting that goes with your furniture and finishes, because I think those things can make a space feel complete.” Calemmo noted how she considers nature and natural light when she designs the lighting for interior spaces: CONTINUE ILLUMINATE ON PAGE 12

FAIRFIELD COUNTY’S

ARCHITECTURAL JOURNEY By Gretchen A. Peck

Realtor Matt Lahey, sales executive with Higgins Group Southport Harbor, is the listing agent for 658 Pequot Avenue in Southport, listing for $4.05 million. The Second Empire-style Victorian home was built in 1869. Photo courtesy of Higgins Group Southport Harbor.

A Tapestry of Styles from Over Four Centuries

T

hinking of architecture in the context of Connecticut, one’s mind may naturally conjure images of classic shingle-style homes, iconic to much of the state’s coastline along Long Island Sound. But throughout Fairfield County, architectural styles are anything but confined to that aesthetic. Home buyers relocating to the southwest corner of the state will be pleasantly surprised by the architectural spectrum— everything from ornate Victorians to simplistic farmhouse colonials, from European-inspired Tudors to sleek Mid-Century Modern and Contemporary homes that pay homage to their natural environment. “Fairfield County was established in 1666. The timeline of architectural styles over the course of almost 400 years is extensive, to say the least,” according to Realtor Matt Lahey, sales executive with Higgins Group Southport Harbor. “A short drive through any of our towns will expose buyers to salt boxes, farmhouses, sea captain’s homes along Long Island Sound, in styles including Georgian-Federal and Greek Revival, ornamental Second Empire homes, such as 658 Pequot Avenue, and mid-century modern homes made famous by ‘The Harvard Five.’ There is so much to learn, admire and embrace when it comes to architecture in Fairfield County. There is something for everyone to call their own,” Lahey suggested. Built in 1869, 658 Pequot Avenue, Southport, perfectly exemplifies Victorian-era Second Empire architecture. It presides over a 0.54-acre setting in the historic Southport Village.

“One feature of the Second Empire Victorian style is the mansard roof, a four-sided gambrel roof with a shallow, pitched top, usually accompanied by dormer windows,” Lahey noted. “The mansard style makes maximum use of the interior space of the attic. “In this home, the attic has vaulted ceilings over 14-feet in height, and the family has created a spectacular 1,500-square-foot loft space to accommodate their artistic and athletic pursuits,” Lahey added. “Second Empire buildings are typically highly symmetrical and feature massive interior design elements and layouts, with plenty of straight lines and sharp corners. Such symmetry in a home creates spaces that are amenable to a more current design aesthetic, and its soaring ceiling heights encourage all sorts of elegant lighting designs.” Inger Stringfellow, a Realtor with William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty, is both a Luxury Property Specialist and a Mid-Century Modern Specialist, but the Fairfield County market allows her to work with an array of clients and architectural styles. Currently, she’s the listing agent for 63 Park Street, New Canaan, a Greek Revival home that debuted on the site in 1836. “The exterior of the house is very much in the Greek Revival style, with its columned portico supporting a triangular pediment, as seen on a Greek temple, and painted pristine white,” Stringfellow described the home. “The windows are all six-over-six double-hung sash. The entry has a paneled door surrounded by classic trim, transom window and sidelights. CONTINUE ARCHITECTURE ON PAGE 6

It was originally home to the New Canaan Country School. Later, it became the private home of Publisher Maxwell Perkins, and more recently was the home and home office for a local architect. The property is on the market for $3.495 million; Inger Stringfellow, a Realtor with William Pitt Sotheby’s, is the listing agent. Photo courtesy of William Pitt Sotheby’s.

“No matter what your style preference or your particular needs may be, you can find the home of your dreams in Fairfield County.” “The interior is a different story,” she continued. “The house was formerly owned by an architect and his wife, who had their architectural practice there. There were two parlors used as a reception and display area, and a subsequent Victorian addition to the back of the house became the conference room. The workings of the practice were all on the lower level, with double-height ceilings and windows for maximum light.” Stringfellow has an appreciation for Fairfield County’s architectural variety; it allows her and other Realtors to help buyers find the type, size and price point that best suits their needs. “I think Fairfield County has an extraordinary array of styles, from classical Connecticut colonials, antique homes, farmhouses and Mid-Century Modern homes,” Stringfellow said. “New Canaan became the epicenter for modernism back in the day, when a group of architects—later referred to as the Harvard Five—lived and practiced in New Canaan. They were influenced by the Bauhaus style and by Walter Gropius who taught at Harvard School of Architecture.” “Home styles throughout our area are many and varied. So, no matter what your style preference or your particular needs may be, you can find the home of your dreams in Fairfield County,” according to William Pitt Sotheby’s Broker Carolyn Clark. “In fact, we have an astonishing number of style choices for the luxury home buyer—from

traditional colonials, Capes or ranches to contemporaries, moderns, Mediterraneans, bungalows and Tudors.” Clark is the listing broker for a Tudor-style home at 37 Long Lots Road, New Canaan. “[It] is a fine example of Tudor Revival architecture, which is prevalent throughout Westchester County, but more unique here in New Canaan. It contains many features that capture the essence of the original Tudor style and evoke a sense of warmth and historical charm,” Clark noted. Elements of the Tudor style are found first among the exterior features, which blends brick, white stucco and half-timbers. Among the multi-paned windows are some cut in diamond shapes. Among the 7,574-square-foot interiors, there are also decorative half-timber beams in the kitchen, and parquet hardwood floors in the library. “Adding to the appeal of this particular Tudor-style home is its beautiful setting, fantastic curb appeal and location in the desirable Hoyt Farm area of town,” Clark remarked. “We find that buyers coming here from other parts of the world are drawn either to something new, bold and unique, or to the more familiar—like their home from ‘back home’—wherever that may be,” she added. “It Fairfield County, we have something for everyone, no matter what makes your heart go pitter-pat, or where you are coming from!” n

Kitchen Counter considerations By Gretchen A. Peck

Look to design aesthetics and purpose when choosing kitchen surfaces.

T

he options for kitchen surfaces today are plentiful, and no longer is it necessary to sacrifice aesthetics for functionality. Depending on the kitchen design, color palette, and how the kitchen spaces will be used, homeowners and builders today can choose from granite, marble, quartz, quartzite, porcelain, copper, hardwoods and butcher block—or a combination of two or more. To learn about the most popular substrates for kitchen surfaces around Fairfield County’s magnificent luxury homes, we turned to a few local Realtors who shared some examples from homes currently on the market. Coldwell Banker Realtor Jackie Hammock represents the seller of 6 Pleasant View Place, Old Greenwich, a newly constructed five-bedroom shingle-style colonial home with 6,068 square feet of living space and a twocar garage. The seller is asking $3.495 million for the 0.36-acre property. Hammock offered some insight into the home’s kitchen, including the design elements. “The builder of this home has a designer who selects all the interior finishes and colors of the home,” Hammock explained. “The open kitchen plan is essential to today’s buyers. It is certainly the largest room in the home. For this new

home, she designed the custom-made cabinets for the kitchen, butler’s pantry, mudroom and all six baths. “She used large drawers throughout the kitchen, for plates, pans and cooking supplies,” she continued. “Pantry cabinets surround the refrigerator-freezer, which have slide-out drawers, so you can really see what you have, even at the back of the cabinet. Pullout cabinets opposite the gas range have racks for spices within easy reach while cooking.” The designer carefully chose the surfaces. “She selected quartzite for the countertops and the huge center island, because it is more durable than quartz and marble, and it stains less and is more attractive than most granites,” Hammock suggested. Realtor Amanda Thaw with The Riverside Realty Group in Westport is the listing agent for 3 Wake Robin Road, Westport—a newly constructed five-bedroom home created by HOBI Award-winning VAS Construction. The 1.68-acre property and 7,880-square-foot home is on the market at $4.2 million. “The kitchen at 3 Wake Robin Road is one of my alltime favorites,” Thaw said. “It was custom-built for a beautiful and elevated experience. The materials used offer a seamless serenity combined with a myriad of thoughtful and practical design details, resulting in a space that every chef or baker will appreciate. “The counters around the range and the lower part of the island are marble and are in areas where one might place a hot pot or pan, as marble can withstand heat better than other materials,” she added. “The lower part CONTINUE KITCHENS ON PAGE 10

of the island is perfect for prepping ingredients and is a baker’s dream. Quartz is used on the rest of the island, in the butler’s pantry and for the coffee station, as it is more durable and can withstand spills better than natural stone, making those areas more carefree for daily use.” Not only does the kitchen have some handy work spaces, it’s thoughtfully outfitted with clever cabinets and appliances, as well. “Every space in this kitchen was designed for ease of living,” Thaw said. “There are magic corner units for optimal storage, and pull-outs for mugs on both sides of the coffee station. The lighting is even set so it does not cast a shadow over the cook. The second sink is perfectly placed for hand washing when coming in from the mudroom, and if something spills in the refrigerator, there is an extra garbage pull-out, as well, for quick and easy cleanups. There is useful storage everywhere, including underneath the seating area for items that aren’t used as often. This stunning and ideal kitchen—the heart of the home—is meant to be used.” In the kitchen at 56 Dingletown Road, there are several surfaces represented, including hardwood surfaces, copper countertops, quartz and butcher block. It’s a kitchen that looks marvelous but is also designed to be a highly functional space. The property is currently on the market for $4.795 million. Sotheby’s International Realty’s Marje Vance Allocco and Heather Platt are the co-listing agents. Platt described the kitchen as “masterfully designed.” She noted the antimicrobial copper countertops, quartz surfaces that surround the range, walnut hardwood surfaces crafted in Connecticut, and the prep island’s butcher block. “These copper countertops are unsealed so that they offer an endlessly changing patina and full impact of

the antimicrobial effects of copper,” Platt explained. “They can be polished and cleaned, so that they have the bright salmon color, if desired. These were made by a family workshop in Texas.” “I’ve been in hundreds of beautiful kitchens during my real estate career in Greenwich, but rarely do they function at the level of 56 Dingletown,” Vance Allocco said. “I’m an avid home cook, and I covet the elements in their kitchen. “The seller’s approach to feeding her family is wholesome and organic,” she added. “She applied the same principles to the kitchen design and specifically to the surfaces. End-cut or end-grain butcher block absorbs the impact of knife cuts. It’s very resistant to nicks and gouges, in addition to being easier on the cook’s hands and knives. With proper maintenance, you could think of it almost as self-healing.” The kitchen’s layout and dimensions also accommodate multiple cooks and family members or guests who’d like to help or watch the process. “Cooking can be theater, with room for two or more chefs and seating for seven around one of the islands,” Platt suggested. n

ILLUMINATE FROM PAGE 2

“Lighting is jewelry for your home. It has a lot to do with your personality.” “How can we best manage our environment, so that it more closely mimics natural light and its effect on our bodies’ circadian rhythms? How can we make sure that our interior lighting is enhancing our well-being rather than detracting from it?” Smart controls are increasingly popular, especially for new construction, Calemmo said. They allow for ease of use, even when you’re not in residence, and mood-setting when you are. Calemmo offered a pro tip for homeowners: “Everything has to be on a dimmer—period, the end.” “Lighting is a constantly changing technology, so attending trade shows is extremely important. I’m ‘lighting certified,’ which means I have to take 36 credits in courses to keep up with the changing standards, in terms of energy, codes and best practices,” Calemmo said. “Every year, I attend the Illuminating Engineering Society’s Lumen Awards gala, where they highlight the best lighting design projects of the year,” she added. “I’m always blown away. They always inspire me. I love seeing what other lighting designers are doing.”

A HOME WITH PERSONALITY “Lighting is jewelry for your home. It has a lot to do with your personality,” according to Candace Pereira. Pereira has worked in the lighting industry for more than 35 years. She’s the co-owner of Chloe Winston Lighting Design in Norwalk, Connecticut. Though the company opened in 2018, prior to the COVID pandemic, Pereira and her business partner, Rina DiMarte, have been exceptionally busy during and since. They’ve been fortunate to build the business by word of mouth, and many of their clients are introduced to their services— and the more than 60 lighting manufacturers they work with—by way of Instagram. Approximately 70% of their business is derived from builders and designers, and about 30% of the time, they’re engaged by homeowners across Fairfield County and into neighboring Westchester County. Consultations are by appointment only, and they can ship items anywhere in the United States. To begin a project, the designers prefer to understand the circumstances—whether it’s a remodel or a new home—the dimensions of the interior spaces, and the client’s style preferences. “Also, budget comes into the equation, as well,” she

noted. “For example, do you plan on spending the most money on the kitchen, a foyer or perhaps in your dining room? Believe it or not, a lot of money goes into powder room lighting.” Asked if there’s such a thing as too much lighting or lighting that impedes the décor, Pereira said, “You want to keep your lighting quiet. You want it to complement the room, not fight what’s going on in the space. …Right now, as new houses are being designed, there’s incorporating a lot of recessed lighting, which provides most of your lighting in the room. When you’re adding chandeliers or sconces, those are amore about accents than a function of light.” When a client comes with a request to incorporate a particular fixture they love, the designers can create a theme around it, like you might with a treasured piece of artwork or furnishing. “Lighting is very trendy, so we go to a big lighting show in Dallas, Texas every year. We spend grueling hours and walk for miles and miles to literally see everything. That benefits our clients, because even if we don’t have a fixture on display in the showroom, we’ve seen it in person and can advise our clients about what we think looks great, what works together, what’s presented well in the catalog, or if it’s horrible—in other words, don’t go there,” Pereira explained. Currently trending are designs based on mixed metals. “In the kitchen, you might have polished nickel handles, you don’t have to have a polished nickel feature,” she said. “And color is coming back! There’s a lot of personality in home design right now; it’s no longer the same gray walls and white furniture.” For homeowners thinking of selling, color, texture and beautiful lighting can make a property stand out online, where more than 95% of buyers begin their search. n
