Through all the rain, sleet, and snow this winter has thrown our way, many of us are looking forward to sunny summer days. For three months between spring and fall, school lets out, routines relax, and people make memories that last a lifetime.

Summer camps, in particular, are experts in the memory-making business. They give children respite from the lengthy school year, a chance to reconnect with seasonal friends, and opportunities to explore hobbies, passions, and interests - be they new or old.

Connecticut is filled with all kinds of summer camps to suit your child’s needs. Local day camps, sleepaway camps, and specialty camps are just some of the many places offering fun under the summer sun.

DAY CAMPS

Day camps are a great option for those who want their child to retain a routine during the summer without all the hassle of homework, grades, tests, and school-time stress. Campers spend the day with other children in their age group and follow a schedule filled with activities, field trips, and more.

Some day camps offer early morning or after-camp programs for parents with busy schedules; others have bussing with direct pick-up and drop-off at your front door. Daily lunch, dismissal snacks, and hydration stations keep campers nourished during the hot, humid days.

Certain day camps send their campers on trips three to four times a week, depending on the program. While under the supervision of counselors and camp administrators, children experience a variety of excursions right in their own backyard. Destinations include local aquariums, amusement parks, museums, science centers, and more.

SPECIALTY CAMPS

If your child is interested in a particular subject or field, specialty camps provide the perfect place for them to explore their given interests. Designed to help children hone their chosen passions, specialty camps offer incredible programs, experienced staff members, and invaluable resources to ensure their campers thrive.

Whether your child enjoys playing a certain sport, being on stage (or off), experimenting in a science lab, or digging around in the dirt, Connecticut is home to all kinds of specialty camps. Many YMCAs, community centers, and other entities offer similar programs during the summer months to engage children as well as adults.

SLEEPAWAY CAMPS

If your child is comfortable sleeping away from home, consider sending them to sleepaway camp. These locales are often situated in bucolic forests along shimmering lakes surrounded by different topographies, perfectly showcasing Connecticut’s natural beauty.

Campers sleep in bunks with other children in their age group and eat meals communally in the mess hall. Their day is often determined by which activities they’ve signed up for, including athletics, arts and crafts, cooking, hiking, high ropes, water sports, and so much more.

A beloved tradition at many sleepaway camps is color war, which divides the camp into two teams to compete in a series of mental and physical challenges. The week-long affair typically culminates in a sing-off, where members create parody cheers and original skits to perform before a panel of judges.

Summer Camp Summer Camp AT THE

HARVEY SCHOOL

Harvey Summer Camp promises summers filled with fun and exploration for kids entering first through ninth grade. Situated on The Harvey School’s beautiful 125-acre campus in Katonah, N.Y., Harvey Summer Camp offers a variety of different camps, allowing your children to choose from a multitude of programs. The sprawling campus features open fields, wooded trails, state-of-the-art facilities, an outdoor swimming pool, and an indoor ice rink where kids can don their skates in the summer!

At our Day Camp, children in grades 2–8 participate in the arts, sports, science, music, and theater, games, and camp-wide events. This wide variety of offerings allows campers to explore different interests while introducing them to new activities. We also offer programs for rising first graders as well as a special ninth grade program.

Additionally, campers in grades 5–8 can choose to take a more in-depth approach by attending our Art Camp or Sports Camp. We also offer specialty camps in circus arts, robotics, volleyball, and basketball.

Harvey Summer Camp is open weekdays, June 26 through Aug. 4, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. We are closed July 3–4. Weekly options available.

Camp Hi-Rock, a branch of the Central Connecticut Coast YMCA, is a co-ed sleepaway camp nestled among more than 1,000 acres of forest in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts with a private, 90-acre lake.

At Hi-Rock, campers choose from over 30 program areas, including archery, basketball, canoeing, creative crafts, creative writing, dance, digital photography, fishing, hiking, kayaking, outdoor living skills, paddle boarding, rock climbing, ropes course, sailing, singing, soccer, swimming, ukulele, water skiing, and more! Our main philosophy at Hi-Rock is that each child is an individual and is treated as such.

Campers live in cabins with a nearby bathhouse where they can stay for one to eight weeks. Financial assistance is available for those who qualify. Transportation is offered from Southern Connecticut, New York, and Boston.

Our staff strives to identify areas in which each child excels and help children feel good about themselves. We provide solid role models through sensitive, knowledgeable, and professional staff who focus on helping children develop strong friendships and improve self-esteem at camp. The confidence that is developed during a camper’s time at Hi-Rock stays with them long after they leave.

Camp Hi-Rock also offers BOLD & GOLD Outdoor Lead-

ership Expeditions. On these trips, youth develop their leadership potential as positive, multicultural leaders. Our small expedition groups (eight participants and two instructors) travel to some of the most beautiful places in the Northeast.

F or more than 60 years, Appel Farm Arts Camp has sparked the imaginations of thousands of young people from around the world in beautiful, rural, southern New Jersey. As an overnight summer arts camp for ages 7–17, Appel Farm provides a safe space for campers to be themselves and explore art free of judgment. Here, safety, community, personal growth, and fun are valued.

Small class sizes that engage mixed age groups are available in music, theater, technical theater, dance, visual arts, photography, media arts, environmental arts, creative writing, sports, and swimming. Campers also enjoy free time, workshops, trips, campfires, performances, and special events.

Appel Farm works to be an explicitly anti-racist, anti-sexist, trauma-informed, trans-inclusive, and gender-affirming space for both staff and campers. Our philosophy of mentoring children is centered around collaborative problem solving and restorative practices.

“We’re a place where kids can come to be themselves,” Assistant Camp Director Tanner Rushing said. “Whether a child is the star of their school’s drama club or they’ve never picked up a paintbrush, they will feel comfortable and supported in their art here at Appel Farm.”

Campers and parents appreciate the autonomy campers are given over their art and portions of their schedule.

“During free time, kids may be running lines, drawing in the grass, having a jam session on the picnic tables, making flower crowns, swimming in the pool, or playing gaga,” Rushing said.

DAY CAMP KEEPS KIDS MOVING, EXPLORING, AND LEARNING ALL SUMMER LONG

Atthe end of the summer, families want to hear their child say they had “the best summer ever.” YMCA Camp Shore makes that happen by keeping campers active, engaged, and healthy all summer long.

Director of Youth Development Britney Bruno says, “Camp Shore offers fun and unique experiences to explore the outdoors, meet new friends, and create memories. Having opportunities to unplug and gain important life skills are important ingredients in building stronger kids, families, and communities. Through our Financial Assistance program, no child is turned away for their inability to

pay for camp.”

Summer is the ideal time for kids to get out and explore. But for some kids, summer means no access to recreational, social, or educational activities. As a result, some kids can experience learning loss, increased anxiety, and gain weight twice as fast than during the school year.

“It’s imperative that kids stay engaged socially and physically throughout the summer,” Bruno said. “At camp, kids are in a welcoming environment where they belong. They build relationships, develop character, and discover their potential. “

Bruno said there are five reasons to attend camp:

1. Adventure: Camp Shore offers a wide variety of new experiences and a chance to explore the outdoors.

2. Healthy Fun: Day camp offers fun, stimulating activities that engage the body and mind, and help campers learn the importance of nutrition.

The Silvermine School of Art Summer Camps are back, offering week-long art camps for students age 3–17.

Silvermine provides extraordinary opportunities for young children and high school students to learn from regionally and nationally known artists, all while meeting new friends and having fun on our more than four-acre campus. Students can gain new skills, deepen knowledge of technique and composition, or strengthen a portfolio for college.

With its many art studios and picturesque pond and waterfall, Silvermine’s campus and landscape views enhance the experience of attending camp. Students can sketch by the waterfall, learn a number of artistic disciplines, and enjoy a sense of camaraderie in a creative environment.

We offer art studio sessions in ceramics, woodworking, drawing, painting, glass flame working, mixed media, art and drama, comic and

character development, and storyboarding for animation, to name a few. Silvermine provides young people an opportunity to learn expression through the arts and to participate in hands-on classes with their peers in one of the oldest artist communities in the country.

Camps and workshops run for one-week sessions in the mornings and afternoons for ages 3–6, 7–13, and 14–17. There is also an option to stay all day with the supervised lunch bunch. The first session begins on June 19, and sessions run through Aug. 25.

The 2023 Shubert Summer Theater & Arts Camp is now accepting registrations for students entering third through eighth grade this fall. The twoweek sessions run July 3–14 and July 17–28.

Our program provides a fun and educational opportunity for students who want to explore the arts. It offers students a chance to take in-depth classes in theater, short film, and visual arts in a friendly, artsrich environment.

Camp is open to all Connecticut residents. Located at Cooperative Arts & Humanities High School, the Shubert Summer Theater & Arts Camp is situated down the block from the Shubert Theatre in the heart of downtown New Haven, surrounded by theaters, galleries, and museums. In addition to an arts atmosphere, the camp is staffed by a combination of professional artists, teaching artists, and emerging student teaching assistants from Cooperative Arts & Humanities High School.

Campers may either sign up for the Theater & Arts Camp (where they will take classes in acting, short film, and visual arts), or the Musical Theater Camps. At the end of each session, the Theater & Arts Camp will perform and display their art in a Camp Showcase Event and the Musical Theater Camps will perform their musical on the stage of Co-Op High School. The Musical Theater offerings for this summer will be: “Seussical Jr.,” “Disney’s Winnie the Pooh Kids,” “Madagascar the Musical Jr.,” and “Seussical Kids.”

Camp Seton is celebrating over 60 years of adventure. Located in Greenwich, Conn., on 238-acres of private woodlands with two lakes and more than five miles of hiking trails, our camp is open to children with or without Scouting experience.

Our outdoor programs are designed and provided for the various age groups that attend our camp. We have a six-week summer program that runs from July 5 through Aug. 11.

Cub Scout Camp (Boys & Girls Grades 2–5)

Nothing stirs the imagination or interest of a young child like spending time in the outdoors. Each week campers will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, including fishing, campfires, boating, swimming, handicrafts, archery, hiking, bouldering, and more! Boys and girls are separated by dens and come together every Friday for the campfire program.

Scout Adventure Camp (Boys & Girls Grades 6–8)

Our outdoor programs are designed for children with or without Scouting experience! Each week campers will have the opportunity to participate in

a variety of activities, including fishing, campfires, canoeing, swimming, axe and whittling skills, archery, riflery, climbing, orienteering, and more!

Starting July 5, check out these drop-in family programs with crafts, activities, and games for children of all ages every Wednesday and Sunday in July from 1-4 p.m. Each week features a new theme inspired by Connecticut history and objects in the CHS collection!

THE BICYCLE GAME

This interactive and playful exhibition is designed for visitors of all ages! The history of the bicycle has been transformed by an angry villain into a series of games and puzzles that must be solved. You will need to rely on a host of skills to make your way through the game and preserve this important piece of Connecticut history.

Looking for entertaining and exciting activities to keep your children engaged this summer? Then check out the Italian Center Day Camp — your one stop for summer fun!

For more than 50 years, the Italian Center Day Camp has been the summer home for thousands of children in Fairfield County. We offer full- and half-day camp programs for children age 4 through eighth grade. Camp runs June 26 through Aug. 18 and is comprised of eight, week-long sessions.

Our camps provide children an opportunity to make lifelong friends, discover new experiences, and create memories to last a lifetime! Activities include sports, swimming, arts and crafts, music, gaga, archery, dance, and nature exploration, as well as special events and field trips throughout the summer. Our seasoned staff and low camper-to-counselor ratio helps foster

growth and development.

Full-day camp is held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with an extended day option. A half-day option is available from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with an early morning drop-off option.

AT KIMAMA HALFMOON

Kimama Halfmoon, located on Lake Buel in The Berkshires, is entering its 101st summer of both day and sleepaway camp. The day camp starts at the tender age of 3 and goes up to age 14, while sleepaway camp starts at age 6 and offers Leadership in Training programs through age 17.

While Kimama Halfmoon looks like a traditional American camp offering all the bells and whistles in a prestigious location, there is a twist to all that it offers. Kimama, Israel’s most beloved camp group, took over programming in this Massachusetts wonderland just two years ago and has since infused it with culture from around the world.

“Of course we have water skiing, zip lining, a skate park, and a top-notch facility, but we are much more than that. We brought our experienced staff from around the world,” Deputy CEO Alon Parnas said. “These people have worked in various Kimama programs in Barcelona, Italy, and the Canary Islands. They bring an international vibe and the Kimama vibe, which is one of unity and independence.”

Parnas continued, “We are an all-inclusive camp and come together like one, yet we instill in our campers a sense of independence and leadership, and give them the tools to explore and become the best version of themselves.”

Kimama renovated the entire facility before running their programming in 2022. They renovated the bunks in a way that gives each camper their own personal space yet the opportunity to flourish in a social environment.

When camp groups visited the facility, Parnas said, they were in awe, not only of the renovations and the programming, but by the full Mediterranean menu.

“Breakfast, lunch, and dinner looks like a rainbow,” Parnas added. “At Kimama you’re not just going to see pancakes or French toast — you’re going to see an array of colors, fruits, vegetables, and real handcrafted foods personalized to meet each individual camper’s needs.”

Kimama Halfmoon’s kitchen is kosher, nut-free, and offers gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan options.

Kimama now calls Halfmoon their “home in the U.S.” and is looking forward to another successful summer in the Great Barrington area of The Berkshires. Halfmoon offers one-week sessions in both programs, with the ability to do a full eight-week summer.

The Greenwich Racquet Club offers both a tennis sports camp and a tennis-only camp. The tennis sports camp is primarily tennis, but also includes indoor soccer and basketball.

Students are placed according to age and skill set using the correct court size, balls, and racquets. Fun drills and games are implemented to develop proper technique, footwork, and ball control.

This popular program runs in weekly sessions, Monday through Friday, June 26–Aug. 25. Every Friday is Pizza Day. No membership required.

Red Ball (8 and under)

Children age 4–8 play on a 36-foot court with mini net to develop basic techniques and simple tactics while playing fun individual and team games. Hours: 9 a.m. to noon or 1–4 p.m.

Orange Ball (10 and under)

Children play on a 60-foot court with full net to focus on technique, balance, match play rules, and basic strategy. Hours: 1–4 p.m.

Green Ball (12 and under)

Children play on a full court and focus on ball control using more intermediate techniques and tactics. Hours: 1–4 p.m.

Tennis Only (12-16 and under; Intermediate/Advanced)

This is a tennis-only program intended for intermediate and advanced players who have begun or are ready for tournament play. The program focuses on fitness, footwork, and match play strategy. Hours: 1–4 p.m.

There is limited space so early sign-up is recommended. The club is located on the water in Cos Cob with four air-conditioned indoor courts. Camp takes place rain or shine.

F or more than three decades, Camp Invention® has developed confidence and problem-solving skills in young innovators through authentic, hands-on STEM activities.

For 2023, the Wonder curriculum features exclusive video content encouraging children to be confident in their ideas and explore their ability to innovate. These hands-on modules include:

● Catching Air™: Taking a confidence-building ride through physics, engineering, and art, children design and build their own skate park. Throughout the week, they gain momentum and build perseverance by taking on ramps and other features with their mini skateboards and practicing tricks of creativity and invention.

● Invention Celebration™: Campers take on the role of event planners as they throw a party celebrating creativity and innovation! They invent a Party Assistant to help with their plans, explore the science of color with bubble art banners, and experiment with sound vibrations as they make their own musical instruments.

● MimicBot™: Children show off their unique styles by transforming a robot that mimics sounds into a one-of-a-kind animatronic stuffed animal. THE FORMAN

The Forman Summer Program is a co-ed boarding and day camp that takes place on the Forman School campus in Litchfield, Conn., during the month of July. The program is a dynamic balance of academics and recreation for students entering grades 7-11 who have language-based learning differences such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia, as well as ADHD.

Under the guidance of expert faculty and staff, students discover their unique learning styles while being inspired, challenged, and empowered. They develop effective and tactical classroom and study strategies, learn self-advocacy, and gain lasting confidence in their abilities.

Mornings are spent working with teachers in a tight-knit class setting, which averages six students per class. Courses include metacognitive strategies, executive function skills, math comprehension, reading, writing, and SAT/ACT preparation.

In each course, teachers build on students’ individual strengths and address key challenges, leveraging best-inclass learning strategies and assistive technologies. All students take three focused courses that provide tailored instruction based on how they learn.

SUMMER PROGRAM

Afternoons are defined by each student’s passion, providing the chance to deepen an existing one or discover new interests. On the school’s 125-acre campus and at local facilities, students participate in two to four daily activities of their choice, including golf, tennis, soccer, swimming, fishing, rock climbing, fitness training, boat building, horseback riding, and more.

Evenings are enriched with community events that nurture personal growth, a positive mindset, and interpersonal skills. Weekends include on-and-off-campus activities from sports to arts and team building. During Saturday expeditions, students enjoy the natural beauty of summer in northwest Connecticut. On Sundays, students have the option to go to the movies, shopping, or visit homemade ice cream shops nearby.

Camp Wachusett for Boys, established in 1903, is a small overnight camp located on beautiful Lake Hortonia near Brandon, Vt. Wachusett provides the perfect setting for boys age 8-15 to escape the tether of electronic devices and learn to indulge in outdoor activities and face to face socializing.

Our motto, “unaliyi,” a Cherokee word meaning “a place of friends,” personifies our community where new and returning campers make strong and lasting friendships.

Boys choose from a selection of activities that promote multiple levels of interaction with peers and the opportunity for personal growth. Campers go home at the end of their stay with newfound or improved skills in sailing, water skiing, camping, wood shop, tennis, basketball, archery, riflery, nature and campcraft, first aid, team sports, swimming, canoeing, and kayaking, as well as substantive knowledge and terminology that accompanies the excitement of those accomplishments. Free time is combined with clinic offerings that vary and include lacrosse, pickleball, gaga, cardio and weight training, letter writing, chess, skit practice, and more.

Our screened cabins have indoor plumbing and house six to eight campers and two counselors. Our counselors are nearly all former campers and have attended Wachusett for many years. Counselors and returning campers have made strong friendships here, and view Wachusett as a home away from home. We also have an experienced nurse on staff who can administer any medication and readily contact parents if there are any issues of concern.

In addition to offering overnight camping trips and field trips, our small size allows flexibility for unique experiences like caring for chickens, cows, and a vegetable garden. Our farm-fresh eggs and home-grown vegetables are incorporated into our dining experience.

Li’l Place is a program for preschoolers who will be 4 years old by the end of the calendar year. KINDERPLACE (KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM)

Summer is the perfect time for kids to experience art! The summer youth art program at Guilford Art Center is geared towards developing your child’s creative expression, artistic skills, and social interaction through hands-on activities.

Connecticut Dance, under the artistic direction of Andrea Stratford, has offered high-quality dance instruction for more than 30 years. Conveniently located in Monroe at the intersection of routes 25 and 59, the studio hosts dancers from Monroe, Easton, Trumbull, Newtown, Bethel, Fairfield, Oxford, Stratford, and Shelton. Classes are available for children age 2 and up and include creative dance, ballet, jazz, hip-hop, tap, lyrical, pointe, and modern.

Connecticut Dance is a non-competitive studio that provides the best of both worlds — classes are available for both the recreational and serious dancer. Students can dance for fun and enjoy classes once a week, but those who plan to further pursue their love and passion for the art can be found at the studio multiple times a week.

All students receive high-quality training. Graduates have gone on to dance for Division 1 dance teams in college and even dance professionally in New York City. Each season our dancers are featured in a professional recital production at the Klein Memorial Auditorium in Bridgeport.

From devoted and caring staff to a variety of fun activities, Camp Laurelwood is Connecticut’s premier Jewish overnight and day camp for a number of reasons, Camp Director Louis Lasko said.

“We keep a kosher kitchen, sing Hebrew songs, have Shabbat every Friday, and instill the values of kindness, community mindedness, and confidence in everything we do,” Lasko said of the camp’s Jewish activities.

In preparation for summer 2022, the Camp Laurelwood team began a journey to further develop its camper, staff, and community care work.

“The challenges of living in a post-pandemic world were apparent at camp in 2021, and we wanted to make sure we equipped ourselves and our seasonal staff with the right tools and training to take care of our campers and each other,” Community Care Director Elizabeth Kaplan said. “We started talking about mental health, wellness, accommodations, and camper success plans, to name a few.”

In December 2021, Camp Laurelwood received funding from the Foundation for Jewish Camp’s Yedid Nefesh program, enabling the team to put a stronger focus on MESSH (Mental, Emotional, Social, and Spiritual Health) work.

The camp hired a trained mental health professional/ social worker to work during the summers, and also trained staff in Youth Mental Health First Aid. The program gives adults the tools to identify, understand, and respond to issues around mental health.

“We introduced new programming on Saturdays that focused on wellness and self-care, with the goal of showing our campers and staff that there are many ways to practice wellness,” Kaplan said.

“We look forward to continuing to create a joyful, fun, and caring place for campers, staff, alumni, and community members alike-where we can see each person for who they are and work together on building a kinder world.”
