It is my great pleasure to introduce to you the second magazine published by the now new Heartbeat Publishing Group. It was sometimes this summer while I was in-world thinking about my boyfriend that I got hit by the realisation that they were no real substantial publication for men! We do do have all the lifestyles and the fashion ones, but where is it that our boys have something truly dedicated to them? It took a little work, but I am now really delighted in introducing HBM to the public. We are going to keep it simple and straight to the point, there is really no need to be fussing about. So here it is, we started thinking about what men wanted, or needed; we did come up with a few suggestions. As this is a first issue, our work is still in progress and we will be adding more as we go along. For that, I would really be delighted if you talk to me and share top-

ics and ideas you wish to see. Remember, if you do speak up, I cannot guess; so never hesitate! We love to listen and give you what you want! In order to celebrate the launch, the HBM team is launching 2 MAJOR competitions that will follow the magazine all through it’s first year. We are looking for the newest and HOTTEST Male Model in the whole of SL, as well as the next BIGGEST Male Fashion Designer. We have added the details of the competition in the issue, so join in, you have nothing to risk aside from winning fabulous prizes and enjoying yourself. This is really an exciting time for us all in Heartbeat and we really want to share it with you! HBM will be published every other month, so we hope you really enjoy this issue and join us again in March for Issue 2. Drop me an email or IM , I would love to hear from you and get your feedback!

Into the Gates of Eden’s Sin by
Troy Aristocarnas
A landing at Eden’s Sin sure will send electrical pulses into the veins of any red-blooded avatar, be it male or the male-minded. Soon after a TP and the trees and greeneries have rezzed in this outdoor-themed escort club, a bevy
of at least a dozen photos of alluring female avis greets fun-seekers a-visiting. And no, these are not images of garishlooking streetwalkers in various stages of dishabille. True, they are sexily-clad fun-girls advertising voice (and some

even webcam) escort services, but with their sweet looks, anyone of them can be a candidate to bring home to mama in her pixels of glory. Certainly, it may still be easy for some to lump Eden’s Sin along with run-ofthe mill escort clubs that have provided most, if not all, of the adult-only attractions of Second Life. You know those sleazy-type of dens which can rip off L$s from the unsuspecting. But Eden sim owner, Giana Savira, assures her club is totally different.
9
Sating sensual desires and fantasies the professional way Here in Eden’s Sin you will find “the most erotic, sensual, professional ladies you will ever meet in Second Life,” Giana says. “Our elite escorts are stunning, charming, well-spoken, and sophisticated; exceeding your sexual desires. Each one has her own unique flavor and each one is an amazing individual. We are classy, discreet and will fulfill each and every one of your desires and fantasies,” she adds.
10
Giana, of course, knows where she speaks, being an escort herself. But as to a long-term relationship with clients, forget it. She declares: “I am here to fulfill our fantasies together. I understand desire and know how to feed it with no strings attached. I believe in the saying, ‘Pleasure in the job, puts perfection in the work.’” Imbued with such professionalism, Giana and her wards also bring their sensual delights at Latte’s Lovelies, Eden’s sister club, where guests too can enjoy hot morning coffee and more. Drop by
the club on Mondays and test those lock holds and pins in a bout of mud wrestling with the bikini-clad ladies of Eden’s and Latte’s. Each bout will just set you back with a 100L fee for the lady, but you get half back should you win (which is highly improbable, give the luscious distractions methinks). The art of seduction comes alive in erotic literary tales Wednesdays are Wet ‘N’ Wild Beach Bash of wet T-shirts and bikinis. Machos’ hearts are wont to skip beats these days

with the grinding and bumping of the ladies likewise ready to have baby oil and sun tan lotion on their voluptuous, gyrating bodies rubbed by some of the lucky guests. Fridays are reserved for the de rigueur escort club offerings of half-off stripping and lap dancing, with damage to guests’ Linden purses ranging on the stages of undress or the total lack of garments. Coming on over to Latte’s and Eden indeed can lead to a lickable morning and a seduction in the evening. For more partaking of the taste of such sweet sins, those with the bent for erotic literary tales will most likely be riveted to
the “Filthy Little Secrets” event held every Tuesday at Eden’s Sin, 8 p.m. SLT. Instead of the songs of regular club events, coos and purrs of love permeates the airwaves of Eden’s Sin with live readings of erotic literature, some of which are so sensuously rendered by the female authors themselves. Each sharing of those filthy little secrets can last as long as fifteen minutes, surely more than enough time to drive urges for more sensual passions—yearning for yet a higher dosage of the many earthly pleasures and delights within and beyond the gates of Eden’s Sin.

Life Take a look around Second Life and you'll definitely notice that the male population is widely outnumbered by females. We can come up with hundreds of reasons like "Men want to have female avatars in-world." or "Females are superior beings and have taken over Second Life." Second Life is a hostile environment for the male species, which makes it easier for women to seem like the majority. One example where we can see this disparity is by observing the
shopping environment in-world. There are twice as many shops that specialize in women’s fashion than men’s and the shops that do design male and female clothing create considerably less content for males. Also, with the rapidly growing fashionista and shopaholic movement that is sweeping across the grid, it’s no surprise that men in Second Life are considerably marginalized. Therefore, I set out to find out what ex-
16
How long have you been in Second Life? 3 months. What made you decide to join Second Life? A friend of mine in RL who is a stripper here was tellin me how fun it is and how you could also DJ, so I was bored with the internet and I decided to try it out. actly men are doing in Second Life and learn about their experiences in-world. Men in Second Life start out just like everyone else. They are curious newbies exploring the world. They share the same plight as everyone else: struggling with their unflattering, basic wardrobe, battling against the evils of lag, and looking for some friendlies to chat and make their time in-world worthwhile. They join Second Life to meet people, explore other sides of themselves they normally could not in real life, or just cure their internet boredom. Wombat Hansome, a male resident relatively new to Second Life, gave me some insight into his experience so far:
What do you spend the majority of your time doing in-world? Socializing, making connections with people, making friends. How would you describe your experience so far? Beyond my expectations. The people have been so awesome. The things I have witnessed are extraordinary, and just generally fun. Do you have any advice for male newbies in SL? Upgrade your avi day 1. From this journey into the male psyche, I’ve been able to identify four predominantly malefriendly activities in Second Life.
Ev e ry Day
SPORTS Men in Second Life behave like men in real life, so it wouldn’t be surprising to find that the Second Life sports scene is a central hub for male activity. Residents can join sporting leagues for basketball, American football, association football (soccer), to name a few, join teams and compete with others for prizes or bragging rights. Also, various sporting sims throughout the grid offer
17
a variety of activities ranging from skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding and surfing. Other sporting activities such as mixed martial arts (MMA), boxing, and wrestling have become well-established and extremely popular among the sporting community. Not only can the male resident pursue their athletic glory in Second Life, they have the opportunity of making lasting friendships with people who share their passion.
18 How long have you been in SL? 204 days How did you become involved in the SL racing community? I was trying to figure out what kind of hobby I would like to have in SL and came across SL drag racing. I was so amazed this was here that I had to get involved, seeing as how I have drag raced in RL too. How has racing impacted your SL experience? RACING Racing is another popular activity in Second Life that I found is widely appreciated by the male population inworld. The racing community in Second Life is remarkably extensive, with a large number of male residents actively participating in the development of the sport. From building and scripting vehicles and race tracks, to the overall operations and oversight of this racing populace, you can find many men dedicating most, if not all, of their time in Second Life to this hobby. Gordy Leung, Race Director for P&M Motorsports, shares how he has turned his passion for racing in RL to an integral part of his SL experience:
Another way to earn Linden of course, but also have met a lot good people and it’s so much fun. Since I have started racing I have had the chance to build and become a race director for P&M Motorsports. I am glad to have found my home with P&M because the people are so friendly and the owner, Pauly Negulesco, has helped me out in so many ways, as well as all the others that are part of group. Do you have any advice for male newbies? Find a hobby in SL. Something you have wanted to do in RL or used to do in RL, because you can be anything in SL.

MUSIC One of the things that I love about Second Life is the amazing music scene. Not only will you discover amazing talent and great tunes here, but you'll immediately notice that a sizeable amount of the male population is somewhat involved in the music scene, ranging from marketing and promoting a venue, to DJing or performing live sets. Additionally, a large percentage of the male population can be seen at clubs, bars, or lounges listen to a wide variety of genres such as Industrial/EBM, metal or house/ trance. After surveying many club-goes, the general consensus is that many frequent these locations to chat with others who share similar taste in music, as well as learn how to get into the music business in-world.
Ev e ry Day
ROLE-PLAYING COMMUNITIES Second Life would not be Second Life without the RPing community. The opportunities in these communities are so vast and infinite that anyone, including men, can find their niche here. Whether it is heading a drug cartel, running your own hooker empire with a mighty pimp hand, serving the common good in a police department, or being a lowly street carp, participating in role-playing sims is the perfect way for residents to immerse themselves into the Second Life experience. Of course, one may not like to role-play but it’s always good to try everything once (I did). Communities such as Hathian and City of Perdition offer RPers a more urban/noir theme, while others such as The Next Day and Vanguard Prime have a more Sci-Fi feel. Bloodlines, one of the most extensive, and highly lucrative role-playing communities in Second Life is regarded by
21
many male residents as a top community to participate in primarily because of its focus on “community”. Joining a family, clan, or horde is like joining a fraternity or sorority in college, only without the hazing and the “Freshman 15”; it serves as a great way for residents to meet fellow clansmen, and have a sense of belonging to a special group. Men in Second Life are no different than women in terms to what they want out of their experience in-world. Their reasons for joining are similar, and a lot their activities mirror that of many women. The only real difference I have seen is the fact that if men want to look good, and be up to date on the latest fashion trends, they may find themselves having to look a little harder than women. So if you find yourself wondering “What do the men in Second Life actually do and why is it so hard to find them?”, keep in mind they are most likely doing “guy” things.

reBourne Asian House I recently had the privilege of meeting and interviewing Danny Bourne, owner of reBourne Prefab Skyboxes and Homes. Unassuming and down to earth, thoughtful and driven, he is man of many facets and a person completely dedicated to his craft, always willing to better himself and move forward.

Danny Bourne: I think my early days were quite similar to what most of us experience. I'm a visual person and very into music in RL. My senses were stimulated in a very new and addictive way. I explored a lot, spoke to hundreds of people, made a big friends group and Danny Bourne: I saw it on television spent most of my time socializing, hangin a discussion program and download- ing out, dancing, listening and playing ed it before the end of the program. music. HBM Magazine: Danny, what was it that attracted you to building in SL?
Danny Bourne: I was into building Danny Bourne: I spent the first year and texturing a long time before SL. I in SL socializing, and I made a group enjoyed creating racetracks for car race for them. Most of us were SL addicts, games on the PC in my free time. And captured by the novelty of this magical I spent my days in RL creating interiors place. We hung out together a lot. I've to make a living. So in SL it all kinda met somebody that asked me to design blended together. a Sim concept (what later became MAX HBM Magazine: So for you it Mountain) and we ended up renting half was a natural progression? of his Sim. I made the houses we lived builds with the rest of SL and set some in, jewellery (bracelets), chairs, even a up for sale. So we started our first shop helicopter, lol. I must have sold two or on the small parcel we had here on the three chairs to a friend of a friend but it Sim. wasn't a business. But I learned more

and more about building here and also what I liked myself. HBM Magazine: How did that lead to the creation of reBourne Prefabs? Danny Bourne: After our friends group kinda fell apart because people left SL or moved elsewhere it was just me and Suite left on the Sim. We didn't wanna leave because we lived on the corner of the Sim where we first met. All had left and we kinda sat down, looking around what to do. Suite encouraged me to make a fresh start, from scratch and try to share my builds and call it reBourne (reBorne). So I set two houses up for sale on the parcel we had. We didn't have many prims of course. And worse...NO traffic! So it was just hanging there, in the sky. Until, after a couple of weeks, somebody bought the first skybox, and then another one. I managed to pay tiers for my parcel so easily, we decided to buy another parcel and put on a new prefab until sales al-
lowed us to buy another parcel. It was never meant to make lots of money, but always a balance between selling price and the tiers - it takes time to make it all possible. We have a full Sim now and are running out of prims rapidly. In the meantime, we've changed and altered the Sim several times to finally come to the structure it has now. I am still learning. HBM Magazine: Where do you draw the inspiration from for your designs? Danny Bourne: I get most inspired by my images, certain light settings and moods I see very randomly around me in RL. Also the work of other artists can push me to be creative. I get inspired but always try to put it down in an original way. Along the process of building Suite is my soundboard. She's an inspiration also because some builds would have looked different without her. SL can be a lonely place, especial-

Danny Bourne: We met over three years ago, spent a lot of time together hanging out as friends, but partnered two years and four months ago, August 23rd 2008. HBM Magazine: And you are still going strong as a couple? Danny Bourne: Yes, very strong. We met in RL in November 2009 and are a RL couple now. I don't think there are many couples that would spend two years chatting with hardly missing a day before they physically meet. We're very, very connected. Hail SL :)
HBM Magazine: It is amazing how these things can surprise you :) So, Danny, what does the future hold for reBourne Inc? Danny Bourne: I never planned this to be like this. That's the fun of it also. It's still a spontaneous thing to do. I believe in consistency though. It evolved to become like this slowly but naturally. I'll continue like I did, trying to push myself harder on every new release. Eventually there will be a second Sim but I'm trying to do without that as long as I can. It's still crisis after all. HBM Magazine: Obviously, you and Suite are doing well as far as business is concerned.

What advice would you give to anyone starting out? Or were you given any advice yourself?
HBM Magazine: What would be the main achievement or 'change' in SL for you? (since you first logged on)
Danny Bourne: I wasn't given any real advice but learned from the many experiences in SL along the way. My advice to anyone starting out would be give it your very best and don't do it for the money. Because, even though I managed to afford a full Sim with what I sell, the time spent in SL to build is insane. If I had worked those hours in RL I could have bought a seriously nice sports car! Something else I think that's more important for people to be successful in SL is be enthusiastic about SL and spread the word so more people will join SL. I read so many people complaining about what still has to be done in SL, they create a negative vibe around SL that is far more dangerous than the 'how search works' or 'the bugs' in the marketplace. A lot has been achieved since the day I first logged in.
Danny Bourne: oh, you mean, one that has already happened? HBM Magazine: yes :) Danny Bourne: Well, I remember how often the grid crashed and how we couldn't log on for hours every Wednesday. That's all history now. It's not perfect but my time on SL is definitely more steady, less crashy. HBM Magazine: And what design ideas are you working on at the moment? Danny Bourne: I’m still doing the post release work from the latest release, Paris. Several spin off configurations. I Made a land version and I’m gonna start a low prim skybox version of it. I’m working on an Asian Dojo skybox and we’re working on an Italian house -

In today’s society we show our status as men by the cars we drive. We seek the most expensive, the limited editions, and the newest models. Most of us spend hours working on our cars, streaking our face with motor oil like tribal war paint. Then we get ourselves, and our cars, all cleaned up to pick up a hot date for the evening. The means of transportation has always been a major detail in a man’s life. So what did we men use to impress before the car?

them choosing the horse with just the right coat color, or eye color, showing the same joy a child would when pressing his face on the glass window of the local pet shop. Creator JJ Cerna hit the nail right on the mark. Men didn’t want bunnies, or chickens, and although dogs are cool, we wanted man’s original best friend. “I spent my money on buying a horse, and I still haven’t bought a proper penis...” Stated Fel, a fairly new citizen, illustrating the enthusiasm and importance off owning horses was to him. The high ticket item sent him back 3k's in linden, but the quality of these horses’ clearly defines the high asking price. Plus, if you’re as good a business man, as you are an equestrian, breeding your horses can become a lucrative hobby. “I love horses. Having all the horses around is very peaceful ” Says Myles Sperber who started his stable with his first horse given to him by his sister. “It's
definetly a status symbol, and I was really happy when I got my first one.” says Myles. Now Myles has about 36 horses, and counting, on his small private ranch where Myles spends hours of enjoyment keeping his horses nourished with water, hay, horse snacks and salt lick. "It's definetly more manly, and I spend more time taking care of horses than I ever did with bunnies." Myles is thrilled with getting his hands dirty being a ranch hand, and views all the horses he breeds as trophies of his accomplishments. When I mounted and rode one of these majestic creatures I was quickly consumed by the need to start my own adventure. I thought of riding off to a land filled with Cowboys and Indians. After 2 years of success from her women's wear line, designer Melian Jewell has decided to further her Pounce brand by venturing into men's wear. Meshing classic silhouettes together with her eye for trends, Melian has brought to us a men's line that's edgy and embodies our inner bad boy. I mentioned to Melian that I was a customer before taking on this project. Her reply "If someone who has seen a lot of clothes likes my stuff, then I've done a good job." and she sure has. Taking influences from Celtic symbols, rustic patterns, and other details makes Melian's Pounce line for men a collection to watch out for.

BDSM Secon By Joni Jules
A woman’s perspective on BDSM.
A D U LT
M in nd Life If you are like me - and like to visit a great variety of clubs, you have more than likely noticed how some of the players here like to refer to themselves as either submissive or Dominant. Well that is quite an understatement! We have Masters, Mistress's, Subs and Slaves - mmmmmmmmmmm - I have been in plenty of clubs where someone has wanted to be my slave - I always found that as quite strange, since in RL our concept of slavery is quite well defined. So it got me to thinking - are the values and concepts in SL - different - similar
71
- changed - how do we view these kind of things? A little disclosure here - I have dabbled in being a female submissive in SL - with both Masters and Mistress's and I have a little experience of bdsm in RL mainly as an interest in various classes and munches - rather than a lifestyle choice! So, how is bdsm different in SL compared to RL? To me it mirrors it a little, but the values and what is acceptable in SL is quite different; well more than that “polar opposites at times and the things
72
you can do in SL would be illegal in RL. For example - some of the most popular site - are related to rape or forced sex! Now, that will likely give you a long term sentence in prison in RL; but in SL, it is an experience quite a few wish to have, why? What is all that about? Why would you visit a site to be chased down and raped? Why visit some Gor sim if you are female and be a sex slave to a group of male owners? I am not professing any answers here, I am just pointing out the interesting dynamics that differentiate the two lifes. And how many wish to fulfull their SL fantasies. So where should you go to get your fill of bdsm? Well one place is the Bondage Ranch - certainly al-
ways in the top 20 of SL's top sites! It has nothing in terms of build or sim interest, quite simply a bunch of people who stand around - and do what they do! hehe. This is the place to find the hardcore Masters, Mistress's and subs. You will always see subs kneeling either naked - dressed in latex, gagged and bound. It is a site to behold!! Then there are the Masters and Mistresses. I have always wondered what it takes - or what the mindset is that identifies one in a particular role? Needless to say, these players are very committed to their lifestyle. Bondage Ranch is a pretty hardcore place, with lots of dedicated bdsmers! What about other places for 'lesbians' or women only? Venus-

tus is a great place to hang out. For one it has no men - as much as I love them - it is nice to escape and have a break. Venustus has a great variety of subs and Mistresses, from the complete novices to the somewhat dedicated and hardcore! I always enjoy the 'new' Mistresses they have a wonderful naivety about them. But I also respect the desire to experience a certain lifesytle, so the crux of my article: is bdsm in SL really just a pretext to have SEX??? Could be! For some it certainly is. Is it really a lot about sex? Are we enabling a certain culture? Oh my god, am I over thinking this? and it is just a whole bunch of fun to role-play? A role that is part of who you want to be in SL for a few hours, then go
73
back to the safety of RL, It could be. It seems that for some, yes ! they dabble! for others, they take it to the extreme and wish to experience things well beyond any limits imaginable in RL. So next time you see that sub kneeling before Master - give them a break they are probably having so much fun being who they wish to be in SL. Isn't that what it is really about? We have a safe place to explore safely our fantasies and get away for a while. I have looked at this today from my woman’s perspective, likely to give you men a little insight in the female psyche. However, I wonder is it the same for men? Is what drives a man into BDSM the same as for us girls? I would love to know!?
