Well, here we are, 2020 in
another decade and welcome to this special launch edition of the KGH Radio magazine.
I am Steve Bellamy and I host a live request show on Tuesday from 17- 19:00 hours.
I have always had an interest in music and many, many years ago when I left school I would have loved to have followed a career in radio, but in the dark days of the late sixties, the opportunities were very limited for a shy lad from Northamptonshire, especially when my parents told me to get a proper job.
Anyway, not to be completely discouraged, I along with a couple of friends set up a mobile disco which we ran for ten years. (What sort of music genre do you play).
Skip forward some years I saw an advert for the ‘old hospital radio’ and passing the audition I found myself on the air right up to its demise in 2018.
WELCOME FROM KGH RADIO’S CHAIRMAN Steve Bellamy
Times change and opportunities come up and so I now find myself back behind the microphone with a range of shows, both live and pre-recorded.
Musically the oldest track I have played recently dates from the 1930’s, but mainly the tunes span the years 1960 to 2020.
You can always tune in to the pre-recorded programme series called ‘My favorite album track’ any day of the week!
And lastly, I want to take this opportunity in thanking each and everyone of our advertisers for their supprt with our magazine, which provides essential funding for us to provide the free hospital radio service.

How I joined, KGHR

My broadcast genesis goes way back to summer, 1974! At the time, I was going to summer school at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and was inbetween my junior and senior years at university.
My first job in broadcasting was as a disc jockey announcer and a presenter at WLIL-AM & FM radio stations in Lenoir City, Tennessee, USA.
WLIL, had quite a unique weekend music format! On Saturdays, I worked from 12noon to 6 pm which was split into three 2-hour music blocks, noon to 2 pm was country & western, 2 to 4 pm was Top 40, and 4 to 6pm was gospel music. This unusual programming format was a great educational tool as it exposed me to a myriad of musical tastes and expressions! During my senior year at the University of Tennessee, I interned at two radio stations in Knoxville WNOX, which was Top 40, and then WROL known as W-149, which was AOR (album-oriented rock).
After graduating from college, I moved back home to Birmingham, Alabama, USA where I also worked as an announcer at WCRT-AM and WQEZ-FM from 1976 to 1980. As the call letters of the FM station imply, the music format here was pop and easy listening. After previously working at a hard rock station, I like to say, “I went from Frank Zappa to Frank Sinatra!”
For about 25 years, I worked in broadcast engineering. I was behind the scenes as a transmission controller at various television broadcast facilities.
But I missed being behind the microphone and spinning the records. So, when I discovered that Kettering Hospital Radio was looking for new volunteers, I felt this would be an excellent fit for me and KHR!
In August 2007, I had my initial interview with Wally Valentine to become a presenter in Kettering General Hospital Radio. Generally, I’m at the age now that I despise job interviews; but, my meeting with Mr Valentine was most agreeable, it was laid-back, easy-going, and engaging!

Wally welcomed me on board to be a volunteer D.J for KHR, whilst training as a presenter during the fall months of 2007.
I officially started presenting in January 2008. I began my weekly time-slot of Wednesday nights 7 to 8:30pm. This continued for the next 10 and a half years!
Sadly though, there followed the demise of the old Kettering Hospital Radio in September 2018. Then a small team of dedicated volunteers, spearheaded by Steve Bellamy and Wendy Scott ensured to get the hospital radio station back on the air, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, all-new Kettering General Hospital Radio debuted in December 2019!
My show on KGHR
My regular weekly time-slot on KGH Radio is Wednesday nights, 6 to 8pm. I call my show, “The American Voice in the American Zone.” The reason for that lovely title becomes immediately apparent once you hear me speak!
You will instantly notice my American accent, and if you’re good at detecting regional American accents, you’ll notice I am from the “Deep South” in the United States. No, I don’t necessarily sound like Forrest Gump; but, at times, you will hear a good ol’ Southern twang in there!
My musical tastes are quite varied. I enjoy Rock, Jazz, and Rhythm & Blues. Country & Western brings out the good ol’ Southern boy in me. Show Tunes, Classical, and Easy Listening always are soothing for the soul.
But my favourite has got to be the music of my youth classic Rock & Roll from the ’60s and ’70s! Of course, that means The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Doors and The Moody Blues.
Strangely enough, I often begin my show each week by apologizing to my in-house hospital patients/listeners for tuning in to KGH Radio. That’s because I don’t think anyone enjoys a stay at the hospital!
Still, though, I like to think that KGHR is a great outlet for patients at KGH to make their hospital stay a little more tolerable with our mix of music and banter.
And after your discharge from the hospital, please continue to tune in to KGHR at home on the internet via our web site: www.kghradio.co.uk.
All of us at KGHR are so pleased that we are back in operation and on the air. And we most certainly appreciate everyone’s continued support of Kettering General Hospital Radio!!!

Hi, I am James Garner and I host the Saturday show from 19 - 20:00 hours.
How I joined KGHR
I have been involved with a local community radio station for over 3 years and I wanted to use some of that experience with another radio station.
I made contact with KGH Radio by e-mail at the beginning of June 2020 and got through the initiation process within 3 weeks.
As with every radio show, which is a huge amount of fun, the challenge is selecting music for the show’s audience, the sort of music that jumps out of the speakers and shakes hands with your ears!
At the moment my initial shows are a ‘getting to know each other’ process but I like to think that the show will become the metaphorical equivalent of taking a constitutional look around the rich heritage of musical grounds!
For me, it’s all about musical nourishment that comes from the broad church of music, I love all sorts of genres and music, from Art, Punk, Indie, Northern Soul, Motown, Dub, 2 Tone Reggae, Blues, Acid Jazz, R & B Soul, D&B, 2 Step Electro, Hardcore, Dance, Rock, Hip Hop and World Music.
I feel very privileged to have people’s attention, where effectively I treat the show like I am having a chat with my friends in the pub listening to music. As the shows are interactive, it is a great way to share new music and artists with other people that have a passion for music and vice versa. James :)

Hi, I used to be a radio presenter with the old Kettering hospital radio team before it closed, but I rejoined this year.
It’s been great to get back, I have missed playing great music for the patients and staff. It has also been interesting using our updated equipment. My show is called ‘I request show’! LIVE on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 till 9 o’clock in the evening. So if you want a request for anyone, just drop us a line or contact us?
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/210618203225-9fed91e3cbda957e901ec3ba2171247c/v1/98880d7e62a5b4943d7b88f56c9b6dfe.jpeg?width=720&quality=85%2C50)
I also want to play local bands or artists, as we get into the new norm. As you can see, it’s still evolving. Any genre you would like to request, although it all depends if we’ve got it in the radio library. I personally have a broad church in music. I like all types of popular music. Rock. soul, blues, jazz, and classical, the list is never-ending.

What I like the most about KGHR is the potential, we could become the heart of the hospital, giving information on the news? Becoming a community radio station? Showing the community, the hospital really in the community! Hi, I am David Nicol. I joined the radio station in September 2019 and it has been a lovely experience for me.
I like a challenge and became quite excited at joining the station – this is a totally new direction for me. I’ve never done this kind of thing before and have really enjoyed it.
I went to a volunteers induction event at KGH. Steve Bellamy was there and talked about the Radio Station and how it was being re-started.
It’s a great team to belong to and Steve, Wendy and co are very supportive. I love the team spirit and the learning curve too.
My favorite music is soul, northern soul, reggae and the blues.

Peter :)
Hi, I’m Peter Clawson. I present the Monday Evening show from 20- 22:00 hours. I first became interested in radio in the 1970’s when I discovered Radio Northsea International.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/210618203225-9fed91e3cbda957e901ec3ba2171247c/v1/c1f55b99261b24268aed6beb695cbc56.jpeg?width=720&quality=85%2C50)
A Pirate Station which broadcast from a ship, the Mebo 2 anchored as the name would suggest in the North Sea. I have always liked my music and worked as a mobile DJ at weekends. My favorite choices of music are the ’60s and ’70s. My favorite bands were Creedence Clearwater Revival and Slade plus I love Motown and Northern soul.

I have been involved in Radio Nene Valley at Northampton General Hospital presenting an assortment of shows, including radio bingo on Saturday afternoons, request shows, as well as hosting some live shows from the Derngate Theatre in Northampton.
Then I joined the old KGHR family until it closed in September 2018. Afterwards, I had an interest in following Rusden and Diamonds Football Club and when they advertised for presenters to work on Radio Diamonds I jumped at the chance and after a while, I became the radio station manager for 2 years. I am excited to join the new Kettering Hospital Radio Station now that it’s reopened. I enjoy sorting out the music and content for my Monday night show, providing good music and a friendly voice to the patients/ listeners.
