A N N E M AG I L L I’ve always admired the understated and timeless quality of dunhill – you know just from looking at their clothes, that they use traditional techniques and I like to think, employ people with trades that have been passed down the family, from father to son, mother to daughter. When I visited Bourdon House for the first time, I noticed that they had a leather artisan sitting at a desk, just quietly getting on with creating a beautiful bag. It is rare to experience that anymore – seeing a craftsman working at his trade. My paintings have always been about those quiet moments, trying to catch the second where someone is lost in their own world. Being given access to the dunhill archive allowed me to see the history behind the company and the fact that their motivations hadn’t changed from the past, but had adapted to suit modern life. It is an ethos that I share; my work is not cutting edge nor is it traditional. I think I’m somewhere between the two. This work revolves around a series of paintings inspired from the dunhill collections past and present. There are nods to explorers like Shackleton, which will be expanded into a larger collection of works in the future and there are also my signature pieces – the strong characters caught in a still moment, beautifully dressed.
