Paula with Bodger and Treacle
paula zimmermann Paula Zimmermann was born in Cambridge in 1950, and left school without any qualifications or expectations. At the age of thirty-nine, she decided that there was more to life and enrolled at the Peterborough Regional College to start studying again. After five years’ part-time study, Paula gained a place at Scarborough University College to study painting, ceramics and Art History. She graduated with a BA(Hons) degree in 1998. “People might wonder why I choose to paint dogs and cats and I suppose the only answer I can give is that I am fascinated by their expressions. What are they thinking about? What do they make of us? The relationship between man and the animals that become pets goes back through history and seems to cross all boundaries of class, nationality, income and other social structures that usually separate us. I think it must be a very special relationship and I am hoping that my new paintings convey just how special it is. Much of my early work emerged in the form of abstract paintings, through which I developed and explored a love of colour. My paintings of dogs continue to give me an excuse to express my love for colour and I hope the unexpected combinations of colour and pattern help to add a certain amount of quirkiness to them.” Since graduating in 1998, Paula has exhibited widely in Yorkshire, London and Edinburgh and has developed a considerable and loyal following for her idiosyncratic portraits of dogs and their owners. Heartbreak is delighted to be staging Paula’s first solo exhibition in London.

I would like to dedicate this show to my wonderful and very talented husband, Steve Whitehead, who has given me endless advice, cups of tea and picked up my brushes after I threw them on the floor when things went wrong. I would also like to thank my family and friends for their belief in me, and especially my Mum, who sat and drew with me for hours when I was a little girl. Lastly I would like to thank Nathalie for this opportunity to exhibit with Heartbreak Gallery. Paula Zimmermann
