ON THE COVER
Angelic Presence This issue of Inner Tapestry brings to all of us the multi-talented Rev. Aaron M. Pyne. Aaron is a Cincinnati visionary artist, energy healer, and meditation teacher. Since his youth he has been on this path. As a child he made sketches of mandalas (without consciously knowing their deeper meaning) and had desires to be a teacher of subjects not taught in normal schools. He is known to be gentle, patient, relaxing, kind, and loving. At the age of 17 he began his study of spiritual subjects with Astrology. From there he was told of his great potential in the spiritual field by a variety of psychics. At that point he began his spiritual training. He has studied under many great teachers locally and from abroad. He has received certification in Psychic Development, Reiki, AHS, Reflexology, DNA Activation, Theta Healing and Crystalogy. Aaron has also studied and practiced Astrology, Yoga, Sacred Geometry, Spirit Guides, Angels, Qabalah, and other spiritual practices. At the same time his renewed interest in art reflected his spiritual growth. He began to create artwork inspired by his studies and meditations. By the age of 21 he had his art and writings in various local publications, had been on PBS TV, Fox 19 news, and became ordained as a Priest of Melchizedek (a non-denominational spiritual church). Aaron has done much traveling in his time seeking spiritual truths, mystical places, and avenues for his art and messages. He now seeks to help others who can benefit from his spiritual understanding and love. He accepts the core truth behind all religions and believes they have all had their perfect place in the development of humanity. Aaron’s experience has shown him that there exists one universal love energy/spirit/God/Goddess that is within all people and all things. It is through the awareness and understanding of this that we are released from suffering and we can each come into our full power of Love. It is Aaron’s desire to help others realize this infinite potential

within them through his healing, teaching, and art and help bring in a new level of peace to Earth, Humanity, and all creatures Aaron at Stonehenge that live here. Aaron's artwork is all created on the computer using art and photo editing software. Many of his artworks contain Aaron's photography as well. He taught himself how to use this software. Most of the artworks take 15+ hours to make. During deep meditation Aaron receives the images for his art as well as instructions on how to make it. Sometimes the information comes bit by bit in different meditations; sometimes it comes all at once. Many of the concepts for his art also come from his studies in spiritual works. Angelic Presence was created in 2004, representing the Christ consciousness, which is universal love to all beings. The triangle above the angel's head represents the holy trinity of Father, Son, Holy Spirit or Physical, Mental, Spiritual or the three-dimensional world we live in. Three sides, three aspects together form one shape, showing that all is ONE. All forms of life exist in the levels of rainbow of light, white light. Angels can bring forth the needed energy for healing. Through opening our hearts and our minds we can begin to experience the blessings of the angels. Aaron's work can be found on the covers of many publications some of our own local ones such as Wisdom, The Door Opener and including Spirit of Change Holistic Practitioners Guide. His website is lots of fun with writings, great photographs, information about his healings, classes and best of all his artwork. Aaron does custom graphic design work for you or your business. You can reach Aaron through his website at www.spiritap.com, or by emailing him at: amp@zoomtowncom. Thank you, Aaron, for sharing all of your many talents with our Inner Tapestry Community.
5 INNER WORKINGS New this Issue: Hi Everyone, welcome to our first issue in our seventh year of Inner Tapestry. We have some special people once again who have allowed us to share their work and their lives with you. Happy Anniversary to everyone! I was looking for cover art and a discussion with Ron transpired. I showed him some of the art that I had found and he asked, did I want to show the process of "Lightening Up" or "Lightening Up" achieved. I sat for a very brief moment and knew that it would be the latter, an expression of what it is. In our discussion we realized that the journal has evolved from an expression of the process and struggle to "getting" there to an express of "being" there. We look at many publications and the focus is still on trying to "get" there and we feel our writers are mainly focused on what it is to "be" there. Few of us and even fewer of our parents had a book or manual to read explaining to us how to be. We intuitively felt what was going on in our lives and created our realities from there. As one individual that is in contact with many, thanks for the commitment to your personal work and self-exploration that you all have embraced and chosen to share. This issue, as you will quickly see, is a smidge on the corn-ball side. I really had fun gathering the graphics and quotes for this issue. With our theme Lighten' Up it wasn't hard to find people willing to share the lighter side of spirituality. I would like to take the opportunity to thank www.jakesjokes.com for sharing the quotes found in this issue and John Ninomiya for the excellent ballooning pictures. To the right you will find a more expansive sharing about John. We have added two new sections to the Directory of Resources as well as new practitioners who have chosen to join us. The sections are for Massage and Healing in Nature. Healing in Nature has approaches to healing that I found to be very intriguing.
The end of summer and beginning of fall is a very busy time for everyone, luckily it is also time for some really wonderful retreats. Take the time to care for self and experience the peace, calm and relaxation that a weekend retreat or week long retreat has to offer, be it out in the woods or a quite oasis in the city it will be time well spent. Thanks all, I hope this issue brings smiles to your faces at least a couple of times, laugh lines are the best kind of lines to have.
ENJOY THE REST OF YOUR SUMMER AND ALL THE WONDERFUL EXPERIENCES THAT IT HOLDS.
Searching the web seems to be a new pastime for me lately; looking for new and different things for the journal. I came upon this website (www.clusterballoon.org) and met a very wonderful person who is willing to share himself and what he does with all of us. His name is John Ninomiya and he is from Solana Beach, CA. John is a licensed hot-air ballooning instructor, and is involved in a ballooning project called States of Enlightenment, (now you know how I wandered onto his website). States of Enlightenment is a performance project consisting of a series of fifty helium cluster balloon flights, one in each state. The inaugural flight took place in Oklahoma City, OK in August 2002 and it continues at a rate of three to five a year. To my surprise (small world) John was actually here in Maine in May of 2007 for his Maine flight in Skowhegan, at the Skowhegan Arts and Air Festival sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce; the Maine flight was his thirtieth. There are some great pictures on the website of Skowhegan, the flight there and other flights that John has made. New Hampshire was the ninth flight, Massachusetts number thirty-three and Connecticut is still left to go, so if anyone would like to sponsor a flight contact John at www.clusterballoon.org. "States of Enlightenment celebrates the pursuit of dreams and the liberating force of creativity and eccentricity in life both historical and contemporary."
John also shares that this was conceived as an excuse to combine his love of travel and that of being carried away into the big sky by colorful helium-filled balloons. "In some Eastern traditions, the 'state of enlightenment' is nirvana, the quest for which is of great spiritual significance. For the present project, I have tried to reinvent this quest with a child’s literal-minded simplicity. Being lifted by helium-filled balloons is a very physical form of 'enlightenment' and the 'states' involved are the states of the geography lesson rather than states of consciousness. The spiritual journey becomes a physical journey: a summer vacation road trip in a pick-up truck, going to balloon festivals. Like most childish misinterpretations of our adult profundities, the results are amusing, aggravating, and, I hope, occasionally wise. Enlightenment -- are we there yet?" There are many ways to obtain Enlightenment, being present with our physical experiences is probably the most accessible to us at this time, but one thing is for sure—John, your way looks like a whole lot of fun and is way cool! This to my inner child puts new meaning to getting closer to God. At least at one time that's where I thought "He" lived. Now I know that it just might have been John floating on by. Enjoy John's pictures throughout the journal. THANKS FOR SHARING ALL THE GREAT PICTURES JOHN!

Physical symptoms are our greatest teacher and need to be honoured. We are in a time where we are embracing our own power and autonomy based on informed choice. It is a fact that current medical thought does not accept the latest scientific research (see www.whatthebleep.com). Also, practitioners in the medical system feel they need to be seen doing something, even if they are unsure of the cause of a condition. Unfortunately, this something can be the prescription of abrasive drugs or invasive surgery. This is where each individual has to make an informed choice based on their own truth and discernment. What we have tried to show in this brief dialogue is how, through the wondrous process of Ascension, we are all changing. Whether we are aware of it or not, the processes described above are occurring and have passed the point of no return. Many of us are here, in this incarnation, to support this process. We are in the culmination of many lifetimes on this planet where we anchored energy and teaching into Humanity to support us in this work, in this lifetime. As more and more emphasis is now being directed into recognising that all is energy, both in the scientific and medical communities, we as Masters of Energy are now being called upon to anchor these new healing modalities, which are coming in to support these changes. Although Angelic Reiki is just one of many of these modalities, it is the one chosen to anchor the purest Divine and Angelic vibration at this time. Kevin and Christine Core are co-founders and Master Teachers of the Angelic Reiki System, as passed to them from the Archangel Metatron. This system has been chosen by the Angelic Kingdom to be a channel for one of the purest streams of Angelic Energy to be anchored onto the planet at this time. It is a catalyst for change and has transformed the lives of all who have participated in these workshops. Words to Live By R
by Linda Mundorff, MPH, MSN, ND, RN, CNC, CTN
ecently, while cleaning out my files, I came across a folder from 2002 labeled, "Words to Live By". My mind became flooded with memories of how that folder came to be: I was in my last year of naturopathic school and preparing for my national board exam. I remember how tired and overwhelmed I felt. I had absolutely little to no time for myself and had three children who wanted all of my attention. Even if their father were sitting right next to me, they would come and whine to me. Even if their father were in the kitchen, they would come to me for a glass of water. I once asked my husband how he was able to cloak himself in front of the children. I really wanted to learn that trick. Looking back I must admit that I lost a great deal of time with my children. But you know, back then, all I could hear were the words that came out of their mouths. It wasn’t just with the kids. Even my interactions with other adults were mundane and well, wordy. It seemed that words became so muffled – I was just hearing words, not really caring about the meaning of those words.
Fly Freely... As You Are!
Do you find yourself just going through the motions of hearing words day in and day out but not really listening to and understanding their meaning? Comedian, Bill Cosby used to have this show called, Kids Say the Darnest Things. I read that he rarely rehearsed the shows because he wanted the children to be natural. If he told them in advance what questions he would ask then their answers would be rehearsed and wooden. He didn’t want that. And if you have children you know that the things that come out of their mouths are sometimes absolutely brilliant! The spontaneity and innocence of youth is what made that show so amazing! The words that came out of those children’s mouths were absolutely priceless!! Sometimes I would laugh so hard that tears would stream down my face. My husband and kids would come in and ask why I was crying. Sometimes the laughter was so strong that I couldn’t catch my breath and had to just point to the television set. Those episodes were some of the most cathartic times in my life! The laughter turned into tears, the hyperventilation turned into body shaking, and the pure physicalness of the experience would lead to some of the best night sleep ever. Do you find yourself doing so much, that after awhile, it seems the business is just a lot of doing nothing? Many of us are so desensitized or unfocused that we miss so much of the beauty that surrounds us each day. We often miss those amazing words. Those amazing words don’t just come out of our children’s mouths but if you listen closely you will hear something amazing from friends, coworkers, parents, siblings, strangers, and even your pets. Well, your pets might not actually verbalize, but watch the physical expressions of a pet that is happy. They can be so amazing! Try and be spontaneous and youthful today – enjoy the words around you! In health and wellness!

It all changed after my daughter’s high school graduation in 2003. She was the valedictorian and she wouldn’t let me hear her speech until the day of graduation. Her speech captivated the audience! She was animated; her voice loud and strong, and she spoke as if addressing each student personally. The words seemed so profound, so esoteric, and so heavy. It was as if a light bulb went off inside my head. I loved her words. I turned to my other two children and my husband and exclaimed: Did you hear that beautiful speech? I then wondered what other wonderful words had I missed? For about a week I walked around carrying a little pad and pen. I proceeded to write down things that my family would say to each other. By the end of the week I had quite a list of rather funny statements, insightful points, and poignant stories. I still have that list, and I treasure it to this day.

Humanity's Team A Civil Rights Movement for The Soul by Donna Lausier
Cyan Magenta Yellow Black
Humanity’s Team, founded by Neale Donald Walsch, author of the Conversations With God series, is a nonprofit, global grassroots spiritual movement whose purpose is to communicate and implement the belief that we are all one, one with God and one with life, in a shared global state of being, so that the behavior of humanity may shift to reflect this understanding. This grass-roots movement of the soul was also in response to Neale’s books. People read this material, as well as other well-known authors on the subject of spiritual growth and wanted to join hands to do something. The time had come for us to stop hiding out in our own little corners of the world, reading wonder-filled books on spirituality and come together as one, the Divine beings that we are, and change the world. And we are doing it, one by one, by one. We are the change we want to see in the world as one of our greatest teacher/leaders beautifully stated so many years ago. “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”-Gandhi. At this time in our human evolution, we are given the opportunity to speak out and declare a greater awareness of our greatest vision of who we really are, the person we were and have always meant to be when we were born. We arrived here knowing the depth of who we really are, our oneness with God/Goddess, and with all of humanity. As our thinking changes about ourselves and our relationships with each other as one, so does our behavior in terms of how we respond to one another. Harming another becomes unthinkable. We are in this together and together we will change how we respond to one another when a perceived hurt has occurred or on a grander scale, when there is an act of violence that kills or hurts many. This understanding of our oneness was so evident last October when someone went into the Amish community and killed 6 girls and then killed himself. Members of this community came together to offer support and prayers for the families whose children had been murdered. But, they went ever further and responded immediately with forgiveness of the man who committed this act. They offered prayers to the family of this man. They know well and demonstrated the highest spiritual ideals. Neale Donald Walsch stated in a blog, “In the midst of enormous tragedy and unspeakable loss, the elders of this community said, do not think evil of the school killer. Do not hate those who attack you. Grant them forgiveness, and look with compassion upon their troubled mind.” The response of the Amish people, I believe was a great lesson in forgiveness and compassion. We are in this time coming into consciousness of our innate Divinity and with that knowing we are creating a paradigm shift in our understanding of our global community. Throughout the world there is an awakening, a wave of energy that is igniting a passion and a yearning to understand our true nature and to begin to take responsibility for our lives, our relationships to each other, and to God, herself. There are grass roots movements sprouting up all over the world and growing and they are sending out the same “oneness” message. That message is, “we are all one!”. In addition to the Amish community, we have only to look at the many tragedies, both human made and natural disasters that have occurred since 9/11. We have watched these events unfold and as a global community became instantly one. We collectively felt an inner truth that to react to violence with greater violence does not work, and many have been expressing this truth working to call an end to the war that was created in order to have someone to blame. War and hate only breeds more of the same and it causes the illusion of an us and them, good and bad, right and wrong which serves to create greater separation between all people. Separation from each other and separation from God, the Goddess, Spirit, Allah, by whatever name we would call that higher energy, the source of the soul, is an illusion. The vibration of energy that is at this time moving across our planet is a wave of gratitude, of grace, of acceptance, of love, of joy and abundance for all, and of the Oneness that is sparking our planet and igniting our compassion for humanity. Humanity’s Team is a New Spirituality that seeks inclusion. It seeks to bring people together in a unified, soulful quest of the beauty of humanity. Our purpose is not to create a new religion, but to create a new view of the religions we now have and to find the golden thread of truth that glides through all religions. We need not reject or abandon our present spiritual beliefs, but expand upon them to include extraordinary new possibilities. The greatest possibility is Peace on Earth for all. The core belief in the New Spirituality in Humanity’s Team is that, “WE ARE ALL ONE” in joy, love, abundance and peace, with each other and with God. The golden thread of truth in all religions is Love. In fact, God, Love, and Life are interchangeable. We are waking up to a greater wisdom. We are awakening to a new understanding of a God, as a being that lives within and as a part of who we are intrinsically. Many have awakened to a joyful wisdom that as a world community we are responsible for each other and for saving this beautiful planet, called Earth. Humanity’s Team is active in 94 countries and at last count there are over 10,000 members and our community is growing everyday. In Maine, there are about 90 8 Inner Tapestry Aug/Sept 2008
members of Humanity’s Team, people who have shown an interest in creating community around the core beliefs of the New Spirituality of HT and working with the five steps to peace. When I stepped up to volunteer as the Maine State Coordinator of Humanity’s Team, I made a commitment to connect the people of Maine who would wish to come together to study this new way of viewing spirituality. To support one another as we work on increasing our awareness of who we really are and then making a commitment to make a declaration of that experience. I am very committed in helping Maine citizens to come together so that we can learn together, change together, and work together in our understanding of how we can make a difference on a global scale. However, one does not have to join Humanity’s Team in order to create a book study group or a New Spirituality study group. This message goes out to all who wish to make a difference and to continue learning about the Spirit that is within us all.
Five Steps to Peace
1. Acknowledge that some of our old beliefs about God and about Life are no longer working. 2. Acknowledge that there is something we do not understand about God and about Life, the understanding of which will change everything. 3. Be willing for a new understanding of God and Life to now be brought forth, an understanding that could produce a new way of life on the earth. 4. Be courageous enough to explore and examine this new understanding, and, if it aligns with your inner truth and knowing, to enlarge your belief system to include it. 5. Live your life as demonstrations of your highest and grandest beliefs, rather than as denials of them. Lightening Up by Pat Foley
In the spirit of lightening up, we invite you to join us in a making a quick scan of life and highlighting some of the things that stand out as being in some way special. Because our focus is on “loving earth” we’ll examine something that is a part of the natural world and our relationship to it. To begin, let’s pick a single day to consider. In fact, let’s choose a fairly ordinary time and see what stands out.
MORNING
Cyan Magenta Yellow Black
In our day, morning starts early, around 4:30 am, as the summer sky lightens and the birds begin to make small noises. We go outside. The grass is wet with dew, the air refreshingly clear and cool after last night’s rain. We stand on the deck and look up the hill toward the labyrinth, catching the motion of an early rising phoebe among the wild cherries. The land is peaceful. There are no human sounds at this hour, just the birds, rustling leaves, and the land itself coming awake. It sings its own morning song. We can almost make out words as we listen, and the sound of a pipe… sweet, clear, just at the edge of our awareness, now fading as the light increases. This is a peaceful place, a place of balance. We find it easy to merge with the land, allowing ourselves to become just another aspect of the hillside, the morning. We allow the edges of our body to soften and expand. We spread out and blend with air and plant. We are neither foreground nor background, just a part of the whole; breathing in and breathing out, breathing in and breathing out. We walk up the hill to watch the sun come up, rising bright and hot above the oak and pine trees. With it comes a stronger definition of what is here. The soft edges of grass and leaf become sharper, clearer. A rabbit leaps off the path in front of us. As we watch, the early morning shifts to day.
DAY
Returning to the cabin, we discover a baby phoebe has fallen out of its nest, which is tucked under the eaves. It lies in a little crumpled heap on the deck, so small it is difficult to see which is head and which is tail. Its wing feathers have begun to develop but they are tiny, mere suggestions still. It doesn’t move. Both adult birds flutter about indecisively. Yes, it is breathing, its little body is moving in and out very slightly. After an hour or so, the little bird begins to perk up. Its head is now raised a bit. It
opens its mouth. Without disturbing the adult birds, it is difficult for us to know if they are attempting to feed it and if so, to know if the baby is eating. Each time we look, however, baby appears more vital. Perhaps it has a chance. We recently read an article suggesting that for a wild animal or bird, the stress of being handled directly after some other stressful event sometimes can be too much. For example, if a bird flies into a window and is lying on the ground stunned, provided there is no immediate danger to the bird, if possible it is best to wait a bit before removing it to a safe and quiet place to recover. So we are waiting. But it appears we are about to have a mid-day rain shower. A wet baby bird will chill quickly. Such a thing will not increase its chances of survival. We get a ladder and line a plastic ice cream container with a soft towel. Approaching the baby from an angle that will prevent it from getting to the edge of the deck and possibly falling off, quickly we pick it up and put it in the container. It weighs nothing at all. The ladder is old, meant for picking apples, twisted a little and not too steady. Three rungs are missing, but up we both go. The nest is tucked away under the eaves. Although, because it is above head level we cannot see into it, we feel other babies inside. Carefully, using just an index finger, we make a place for the fallen phoebe and slip it back into its rightful home. Done. The rain now is coming down hard. We replace the ladder and clean out the plastic container.
AFTERNOON
Hours have passed. The rain has stopped. All the baby birds are still in the nest. The parent phoebes are bringing food regularly, their bills full, fuzzy around the edges with insects. It appears this rescue will be successful and we feel immensely pleased; one little rescue, one live baby phoebe, one happy feeling that spreads outward to enfold all life. Spiritual Maturity by Anurag Shantam
T
even if you were able to pinpoint the origin, the one supposedly responsible, nothing will change. For the pain, whatever its origin, is within you; you carry it, and will continue to carry it until you realize that it is your responsibility to clear it, and to constantly blame others simply prolongs the agony. The pain, as well as the fear and anger, can be cleared, but not while you are distracted searching for where to point the finger of blame. When I suggest that one must take responsibility for the veils of darkness that one carries, I need to be clear that I’m not suggesting you blame yourself, as many spiritual people do. Others are not to blame, they are merely triggering the veils, nor are you to blame, for you didn’t willingly embrace pain, fear, and anger. No one is to blame, and in assuming responsibility for these veils, one is simply acknowledging that whatever the origin of these veils, I’m stuck with them, blaming others will not remove them; affirmations will not remove them; the power of positive thinking will not remove them; mood-altering pharmaceuticals will not remove them; hell, even a spiritual master cannot remove them for you. This is the work, the work of the spiritual seeker, the one who wants to be free, to purge themselves once and for all of the darkness within which is destroying a life, destroying a world. You’re the only one who can do it, and as difficult as it can be, once begun you might find it addictive, as others have found, to move on a journey inwards towards the true centers of light, the true selves within: soul, spirit, and God. The journey, the path, is the fulfillment, and the first step is taken when one begins to take responsibility for their own pain/fear/anger and begin to search for ways to clear the darkness and release the light. If you are to succeed in waking up, these are the three obstacles: pain, fear, and anger. All ego states; all the suffering you experience can be linked to these three veils. Everything you don’t like about yourself and the world around you will be linked to these three roots of the ego madness. Your God-self (the one whose essence is truth) must ruthlessly examine the path he has chosen for you, asking himself the question, “Am I addressing the causes of my problems, or merely continuing to distract myself ? Am I serious enough in my personal work, do I care enough about the world, to finally bite the bullet and begin the task of clearing the darkness the only place I can, within myself.” If your soul, spirit, and God want to be a light unto the world, the price to release the soul’s perfect love-light is the pain surrounding her; the price to release the spirit’s perfect trust-light is the fear surrounding him, and the price to release the great truth-light of God is his ancient anger. Are you willing to pay the price? For those interested in clearing the veils of darkness go to Rebelliousspirit.com, click on the webzine manuscript “Awakening”. he prerequisite for adulthood is responsibility. For someone on a spiritual journey, responsibility becomes paramount. In the ego, we frequently find ourselves busy taking responsibility for everyone else, leaving us little time or energy to take responsibility for ourselves. One of the ironies of the spiritual journey is that one tends to become selfish (at least in the eyes of others), for it takes energy and commitment to clear the veils of darkness. Spiritual maturity begins with taking responsibility for your self, instead of blaming others for all the ills that beset you. Who is this self? And what exactly are you asked to take responsibility for? Well, there are actually three selves, and three areas of responsibility. There is the soul-self, and here the responsibility is the sadness/pain that torments soul-self. There is spirit-self, and here the responsibility is the anxiety/ fear that cripples this part of self. Then there is the God-self, the self who is at the heart of the blame game that is destroying everything. The responsibility of this part of self is the anger, arguably the darkest veil of all. In one of those spiritual paradoxes, this very God-self is the self that must ultimately take the responsibility for clearing the veils, and yet this is the very part blaming everyone and everything else for the pain of the soul-self, the fear and insecurity of the spirit-self, and the anger of the God-self. My advice to your God-self is to take a very hard look at the blame game, see the destruction it has wrought in your family, the devastation it has wreaked and continues to wreak in the world. Ask yourself a very simple question “Does the blame game work?” Quite simply, in the realms of the spiritual and material worlds, is the blame game making life better for me individually, better for the world collectively? The ego, the source of the feeling of separateness, deludes us into believing that what happens within is somehow contained within. For instance, if I am in sadness, in depression, it seems contained within myself. Nothing could be further from the truth. When in pain, your soul is pouring light into a veil of darkness: pain. The pain veil transforms the light into darkness and projects it into the world. What originates in the soul center as pure unconditional love-light is transformed into darkness as it passes through the veil into the world. Every moment your soul is lost in the pain, she is unwittingly pouring that pain into the world. The same is occurring with spirit’s fear; each moment your spirit is caught in the anxiety/fear, he is projecting that darkness into a world already drowning in it. And every moment that your God center is lost in his ancient rage, whether expressed or not, he is pouring the most destructive energy in creation into the world. The effects of six billion sleeping Gods unconsciously inundating the creation with this darkness are readily apparent. One has only to turn on the news. It does not matter where your soul’s pain came from. It does not help to explore the past endlessly looking for the cause, for who’s to blame for doing this to me, for

t was hot and dry in this part of the land. The rain, when it fell, was woefully inadequate to quench the thirst of the many crops the people of Mura village had planted. The village well provided enough water for the people but it couldn’t be spared for the crops. Fortunately, the village sat upon a hilly rise above the glistening waters of Lake Tanko. The lake was fed through underground springs that came down from the nearby Yama mountain range. The water was fresh and plentiful. But the land around the lake was not suitable for crops. It was rocky and uneven. The villagers had to plant their crops up on the flat of a nearby hill next to the village where the soil was rich. Mura village was not a very prosperous village and all of the young men and women had many responsibilities that left little time to haul water up from the lake. The older men and women of the village simply were not strong enough to carry the amount of water needed up the long trail from the lake to the fields. It was a constant dilemma. On this day, as the sun grew higher in the sky, the villagers were meeting to discuss their problem. They didn’t know what to do. Young Taro had returned from gathering wood and had told his father about the sage he had met on the road that morning. It was at this precise moment that Zin, the Wandering Sage entered the village. His gray robe was dusty and his face was covered by the shadow of the large straw hat. “That’s him!” Taro cried. “Perhaps he could give us some advice.” Taro’s father, Tosan, was the village elder. He stood and bowed as the sage approached. “Good day to you, sir. My son says that you have been kind to him this day.” “I have no other way of being,” Zin replied. “He says you are a wise man from a distant land.” “I am simply a traveler” Zin said, “and my journey has brought me to your village.” “Perhaps in your travels you have encountered a problem similar to ours and could provide some knowledge as to how we can solve it,” Tosan said. “Anything is possible,” Zin replied. Tosan quickly told the sage about the crops in the fields and the long distance it was to get water from the lake and the shortage of people to carry it. Zin thought for a few moments as the villagers shuffled their feet and looked at each other. “It would appear that you need a water bearer.” The sage finally said. The villagers continued shuffling their feet and looking at each other. “If you would be kind enough to provide me with a place to sleep and a meal or two,” Zin continued, “I will offer my services as water bearer for your village until the fall harvest.” The villagers drew a collective gasp. They had not expected this. “Cer…cer… certainly, sir.” Tosan said, moving forward and bowing deeply. “I would be most honored if you would stay in my house.” Returning the bow, Zin became the village water bearer. The next day Zin searched the whole village but could only find two water buckets. One of the water buckets was strong and sturdy. The other bucket looked sturdy, but sadly it had a small hole in the bottom. “The rest of our buckets were lost in a barn fire this past winter.” Tosan explained. Zin shrugged and began his task. He carried the buckets down the long winding path to the lake and filled them. Then he hauled them back up the path to the village. When he reached the fields the strong and sturdy bucket was full, but the bucket with the hole was only half full. The rest of the water had leaked out through the hole in the bottom.
Up and down, back and forth, over and over Zin carried the water buckets. Each and every time he reached the fields the strong and sturdy bucket was full, but each and every time he reached the fields the other bucket with the hole was only half full. Every day Zin carried the water buckets along the meandering trail from the lake to the village. Up and down, back and forth, over and over. The bucket with the hole was quite ashamed at its imperfection and miserable that it could only perform half of what it had been made for. It was not a happy bucket. The sturdy bucket was proud of its ability to stay full. Not too proud, mind you, it was just a bucket after all… The bucket with the hole tried to do everything it could to hold its water. But, being a bucket with a hole in it, that was not much. Summer wore on and Zin carried the water buckets from the lake to the fields. Up and down, back and forth, over and over every day. At last the harvest came and it was a bountiful crop. Everyone in the village rejoiced at their good fortune. With the harvest the demand for crop water dropped off and Zin’s job was finished. The villagers thanked Zin for all of his work. Zin thanked the two buckets for all of their work. At this point the bucket with the hole could hold back no longer. “Uhm, sir, I’m sorry.” “Why?” Zin raised his eyebrow, apparently unsurprised at a talking bucket.“I’m useless!” the bucket cried. “Every day you carry water from the lake to the village, up and down, back and forth, over and over, and every time half of the water I’m carrying leaks out before we get to the fields.” “That’s how it is,” Zin nodded. “But I can’t stop leaking… what a waste.” “It’s not about what you can’t do.” Zin said as he picked up the bucket and carried it to the door. “Look.” He opened the door and gestured out to the trail leading down to Lake Tanko, sparkling azure blue in the afternoon sunlight below the village. The bucket looked. As far as the eye could see, from the shores of the lake to the distant fields… one side of the meandering trail was lined with flowers and herbs. It was beautiful, almost magical. Everywhere else was dry and barren. “I knew you leaked, so I planted seeds along the trail.” Zin said. “Now the villagers have herbs for medicine and cooking.” The bucket would have cried with joy, but since it was still just a bucket with a hole in it, it dripped. Zin smiled. “Everyone has their own unique flaws. But it is the flaws we each have that make life interesting and rewarding. Take everyone for what they are and look for the good within.” Aaron Hoopes is an author, instructor and the founder of Zen Yoga. His newest book Breathe Smart 2nd Edition is available now. Honoring the Sun's Passage by Evelyn C. Rysdyk
I
n the fading light of late Summer and quietly approaching Autumn, we feel the sweetness of the Sun even more keenly. As August begins, we celebrate the midpoint between the solstice and approaching equinox with the Old Celtic holiday of Lughnasadh. Celebrated August 1st on our calendar, this festival marks the beginning of the harvest season and the ripening of the first fruits. Traditionally, Lughnasadh was a time of community gatherings, markets, horse races and reunions with distant family and friends. The energies of these celebrations would have been a kin to the late Summer agricultural fairs we celebrate here in Maine.
Cyan Magenta Yellow Black
On mainland Europe as well as in Ireland, the time of Lughnasadh is still celebrated with bonfires and dancing. In a practice that may be an echo of the celebrations of Celtic tribes who lived there in the Iron Age, August 1st is the national holiday of Switzerland. As in all other Lughnasadh-based festivals, it too is celebrated with bonfires. Following the timeworn custom of taking pagan holidays and putting a Christian overlay upon them, the Church established a ritual of blessing the fields on this day, as well. According to old Celtic myths that survive in Irish stories, Lughnasadh was a feast started by the god Lugh. He is a being who is the product of a Tuatha Dé Danann father–Cian and a Formorian mother– Ethniu. This is interesting as the Fomorians are the Old Ones/giants and the Tuatha Dé Danann (People of the Goddess Danu) are beings who eventually receded into the “Hollow Hills” to become the Sidhe, who are later referred to as Faeries. All this is to say that Lugh is a bridge being. He bridges the primordial giants and later, more human-like divine beings. He also doesn’t belong fully to either group. As such he is described in a way that is both complex (he is a wright, smith, champion, swordsman, harpist, poet, historian, sorcerer, and craftsman) and conflictual (he is a fierce warrior who can also heal). He is said to have influence over storms. Makes me think about those late Summer storms, which have the dual ability to both nourish the crops with rain and destroy them with hail and wind. An Anglo-Saxon and Christian holiday, which occurs at about the same time, was a festival and feast of thanksgiving for grain and bread. The Anglo-Saxon word hlafmæsse, which refers to "loaf-mass," or “loaves festival,” may be the root of the word of Lammas. This is the more common name used among Wicca groups for the August 1st celebration. Wiccan traditions suggest that the origins of the holiday commemorate the sacrifice and death of the Wiccan Corn God, in his/her cycle of death, nurturing the people, and rebirth. Before Christianization, in traditional pagan European culture, it was believed that the spirit of the “corn” (in modern American English, “corn” would be “grain”) lived amongst the crop. In its cycle of death, nurturing the people, and rebirth, the grain cycle is a microcosmic reflection of the way sunlight waxes, wanes and returns to the land. Because of this, Wiccans consider the Corn God as an aspect of their Sun God. When the corn/grain is harvested, the spirit, which enlivened it, is effectively made homeless. Among the 14 Inner Tapestry Aug/Sept 2008
customs attached to the harvest that remain from pre-mechanized agricultural Europe, is the tradition of the corn dolly. The dollies would have been in many shapes from abstract spirals, crosses, sunbursts and fans to figurative images of animals and people. These images are still created from the last sheaf of wheat or other cereal crop as a home for the spirit of the grain. Traditionally, the dolly would have an honored place in Corn Dollies are made in the home—often hung above many different shapes doorways, on mantles or in the rafters to bring good luck. Animal-shaped corn dollies were sometimes hung in the barn to bless the livestock. In the Springtime, the little idol was placed into the first furrow of the field Welch Corn Dolly during the next planting season—thereby ensuring the enlivening of the next year’s crops. In contemporary American culture, the cornhusk doll and even the merry straw men/scarecrows that are used as decorations for Thanksgiving, are descendants of these older, pagan images. The early European agriculturalists depended upon their cereal grain crops for sustenance not only for the people, but, to sustain Contemporary American the livestock over the winter corn husk dolls have their roots in European months. The relationship between corn dollies sunlight—that nurtured the grain as it grew—and the stored grain, which allowed the people to survive in the winter, would have surely been clear to our ancestors. In a way, the waning Sun was captured in the harvested grain until it was able to return to full light and warmth in the Springtime. In truth, plants do capture the energy of sunlight through photosynthesis. The word comes from the Greek word, photo meaning, ”light,” and synthesis, “putting together.” In this process, plants take water and carbon dioxide converting them to carbohydrates (sugars and starches) and oxygen through harnessing the light energy of the Sun. All green plants can effect this miraculous transformation and it is this process allows plants to be nourished and grow. In turn, nearly all life on Earth either directly or indirectly depends upon plants as a nutritional foundation. Higher life forms either eat plants themselves or eat plant-eating species and nearly all life on Earth depends upon the plants’ gift of oxygen. Since our farming ancestors knew the relationship between sunlight and the crops, it is understandable that various forms of solar deities and Sun honoring rituals were celebrated. Among the Norse, the Sun is represented by the goddess, Sól. She is the sister of her brother, Mani, the Moon. Both are children of
the primordial giant Mundilfari whose name refers to cycles and celestial revolutions–the turning wheel of the cosmos. Here on the Earth where we feel time in a linear progression, we may think of the Sun as an expression of Time. Our days are marked by the Sun’s rise and our years by the Sun’s journey across our sky. At the North Pole, the Sun sets in Autumn for the long night of Winter. The sun isn’t seen again until Springtime. In the Northern latitudes of Europe, the sun grows weaker in Autumn and the nights grow quite long. It is little wonder that the Sun was held in such veneration by the peoples who lived there! The sun disk, sun wheel and sun whorl are all images that have been used to represent the Sun. Found from South America to Asia and into Europe, they have been painted and engraved since ancient prehistory. Along with their relationship to the Sun, Spinning whorl found at they have allusions to time and L'Anse aux Meadows even direction. Twelve centuries before the magnetic compass was created, the Vikings used a solar compass. Archeological evidence for this Viking compass was found in Greenland by the archeologist C. L. Vebæk of Denmark. According to Franck Pettersen of the Northern Lights Planetarium in Tromsø, Norway, this instrument draws on the fact that the sun's shadow from the tip in the middle of a disk describes different curved lines at different times of the year. When you have the hyperbola representing 62° and the four weeks around summer solstice, you don't have to know the time of the day in order to find the general directions. All you have to do is rotate the disk until the shadow of the tip falls on the curved line, and the general directions are given with an accuracy of a few degrees.
Diagram of the Viking Compass by John V. Lambert http://members.aol.com/jvlambert/Norma/SunCompass.htm
Since the Sun’s blessing was necessary for Life, itself, there are also Norse symbols based on the solar cross/wheel, which were used for protection. Good examples of these have been preserved in Iceland. Vegvísir is Viking age solar wheel one such rune stave that was used found in Gotland Sweeden to guide people through “rough weather”—which I think of in both the literal and metaphoric senses. Another bind rune in this vein is, Ægishjálmur. This symbol is alternately referred to as the “Helm of Awe” and was said to protect the wearer
15 in battle. Echoes of the solar wheel/whorl can also be seen in the spindle whorls used to spin fibers for weaving. The action of turning the spindle is what twists the fibers into thread or yarn. Spinning is an act of creation— turning one thing into another—and living creation is certainly contingent upon the action of the Sun. One can argue that the movement of the wheel of the Sun across the sky and the turning of the solar year is part and parcel with the creation and sustenance of Life.
Vegvisir—Icelandic rune stave which guides the wearer through rough weather.
Ægishjálmur--Icelandic rune stave which protects in battle, also known as the Helm of Awe.
This time of year, we notice the shorter days and the dimmer sunlight. On the Autumnal Equinox, the length of the day and the length of the night will be nearly the same. The darkness will continue to deepen until the Winter Solstice. At that time, the sunlight will begin to grow stronger again. Until that time, we have to find ways to capture and preserve our Light. Whether in rituals of Thanksgiving, lighting ritual fires, though celebrations of the seasons of Life, or in the creation of sacred objects and bread—we have the capacity to nourish the luminous inside. Sometimes, this will mean doing battle with the darkness that also lives inside of us. We cannot escape this battle, but we do not have to do it alone. Call upon Sól in all her radiance. Draw the rune staves to protect yourself from the “rough weather” of the soul and to keep you safe in the “battle.” Use the compass of your radiant heart to keep you on course. Unraveling the Candida Riddle b y Do n n a G a t e s
P
eople with Type O blood have the best chance of overcoming Candidiasis, according to naturopath Dr. James D’Adamo. They have a strong, welldeveloped physique and their basic nature makes them physically very active. They also need some protein daily to feel well. Dairy products are not as mucousforming in Type O’s as in other people; wheat and tomatoes are not as acid-forming. This doesn’t mean you can run out and eat these foods with abandon, especially since they feed yeast. But once healthy, O’s can rotate them into the diet with fewer consequences than others might have. Type O’s can introduce new foods sooner than other blood types once they restore their inner ecology. The blood flow of Type O’s is sluggish, so vigorous exercise is critical to improving health and feeling good. Type O’s can exercise strenuously for an hour or two a day and they’ll feel great afterward. The key word for Type O’s is “stimulate.” Stimulate your body with alternating hot and cold water when you shower. Wear strong colors like red, orange, purple and yellow. Drink ginseng tea, which is very stimulating and keep your diet high in iron, with lots of leafy greens, ocean vegetables, egg yolks, whole grains, soaked almonds and sardines.
Type A's and A/B Cyan Magenta Yellow Black
These two types are very similar. They burn a lot of the calories they consume in mental activity and generally have a high creative potential. Their bodies are very sensitive and they tend to be physically less active. When healthy, their thyroid glands are often overstimulated, which increases their metabolic rate. This leads to a nervous kind of kinetic energy and activity, rather than a calm, centered energy. Many of these people may never have experienced their true energy because they’ve been eating the wrong foods all their lives. They may be tense, impatient and unable to sleep well. Candidiasis seems to overwhelm them and it takes a longer time for them to spring back to health than it takes a Type O. Types A and A/B must introduce new foods more slowly. They may have to take extra special care of themselves, but in return they can live very long, healthy lives. Transitioning into a vegetarian version of the body ecology diet is an ideal long-term program for these blood types. Animal and wheat products are usually highly acid-forming for Types A and A/B. Wheat should not be eaten at all (because it feeds yeast), and once Type A body ecology is rebalanced, animal flesh foods (too heavy) should be eaten once or twice a week, if at all. Types A and A/B may find buckwheat (a body ecology diet grain) to be too acid-forming, so, if it’s a favorite of yours, cook it with more alkaline foods, such as onions, carrots, amaranth, millet, or quinoa (the three other body ecology diet grains) and good quality sea salt. The way you cook and combine foods can change the impact they have on your body. Types A and A/B should eat the most alkaline fruits and vegetables to prevent an increase in body acidity. Try leafy greens, watercress, asparagus, broccoli, carrots, fennel, okra, cucumbers, celery, yellow squash and green beans. Even if you were rebalanced and could not eat them, the following food have limitations for Types A and A/B: • Tomatoes and fruits such as oranges, tangerines and apples are too acidic for you (but grapefruit is fine). • Avocados are too rich in oil, so eat them sparingly. • Red and green cabbage may cause excessive gas; however, raw cultured cabbage is an ideal food for you. • Lentils have too high a concentration of iron and are difficult to digest. (All legumes are an example of improper food combining because they are part starch and part protein and are always difficult to digest). Once you are free of your Candida imbalance and choose to eat them, soy products such as tofu are well tolerated by A’s and A/B’s. These blood types can become true vegetarians – but slowly. Don’t suddenly stop eating meat, poultry, and fish if you’re type A. Change over gradually as you heal. Warm baths and showers – neither too hot nor too cold – are best for these blood types. Steam rooms, hot tubs and saunas are too exhausting. Exercise should be calming to soothe that nervous energy; golfing, walking and gentle rebounding are all excellent examples. Soft pastel colors complement the lifestyles of Types A and A/B.
16 Inner Tapestry Aug/Sept 2008
Type B These people share characteristics of all other blood types. Balance and moderation are key to their lives. They can strike a good balance between mental and physical pursuits. They’re constitutionally stronger than A’s but less muscular than O’s. Type B’s will find that wheat and dairy products are mildly mucous-forming and should only be eaten a few times a week, if at all. They can vary their diet between vegetarian and animal meals. They can alternate between vigorous and calming exercise. Warm baths or showers are best, with occasional stimulation from a hot/cold combination. The full range of colors can be worn: red and orange to activate, blue and green to soothe, mauve and violet for meditations or reflection. Type B’s just need to experiment until they find what works for them in terms of diet, exercise and lifestyle. They can sample, pick and choose. HerbologyToday Part Two
by Christopher J. Bashaw, RN
Herbology has its place in modern healthcare I don’t believe anyone can argue that modern medicine has its place and is invaluable saving countless lives annually. In acute, life threatening situations personally my choice is surgery and or pharmaceuticals like antibiotics, steroids, or thrombolitic enzymes. But in chronic conditions like arthritis, constipation, non-life threatening infections and pains, treatments like herbology support the body and allow it to respond and correct itself from the source of the problem. Where modern medicine tends to treat the symptoms with a guided missile approach, traditional herbology approaches treatment from a holistic perspective.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 80 percent of the world’s population still depends on medicinal plants for their primary healthcare, especially within developing countries where most plant diversity is concentrated. With this being said, how is it that the one superpower left in the world has a poor response to the treatment of its population as compared to lesser-industrialized nations? The facts are frightening as to where the United States sits in regards to healthcare: It is estimated that nearly 50 million Americans are without insurance coverage for their health care. •
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention actually reported that 54.5 million people were uninsured for at least part of the year. Health Insurance Coverage: Early Release of Estimates from the National Health Interview Survey, 2006. Centers for Disease Control. http://www.cdc.gov/ nchs/data/nhis/earlyrelease/insur200706.pdf
•
The amount of uninsured is rising every year, as premiums continue to skyrocket and wages stagnate. From 2004 to 2005 the number of uninsured rose 1.3 million, and rose up nearly 6 million from 2001-2005. Leighton Ku, “Census Revises Estimates Of The Number Of Uninsured People,” Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, April 5, 2007, http://www. cbpp.org/4-5-07health.htm. With 44.8 uninsured in 2005, in 2007 the number will be much higher. Professors Todd Gilmer and Richard Kronick, in “It’s The Premiums, Stupid: Projections Of The Uninsured Through 2013,” Health Affairs, 10.1377/hlthaff.w5.143, “project that the number of non-elderly uninsured Americans will grow from forty-five million in 2003 to fifty-six million by 2013.” According to these authors, by now the number of non-elderly uninsured by this date clearly would be nearly 50 million.
It is estimated that 18,000 uninsured Americans will die this year. Per the Institute of Medicine, “Lack of health insurance causes roughly 18,000 unnecessary deaths every year in the United States. Although America leads the world in spending on health care, it is the only wealthy,

In short, Modern Medicine has presented itself to be more about money than healthcare. A bold statement, but one I am comfortable in saying. And unfortunately our healthcare costs money, big money; if you have the money then your choices of healthcare are more apparent and it is limited if you are without funds. Here in the United States herbology is considered “alternative medicine” and is seen not as a wise choice or supplement to our healthcare, instead it is often seen as unsafe and “non-scientific,” when in fact there is nothing further from the truth. Herbology, like pharmaceuticals, has its place. Modern medicine can be defined as curing, simply as the approach of treatment through radiation, surgery, or a chemical (drug) in treatment. While healing, as with herbology, is looking at treating the source of the problem, realizing that the source typically stems from an imbalance of the body-mind-spirit concept; and that in order to prevent dis-ease (meaning imbalance) that not only the symptoms are important but importance is concerned to as where the source of the problem originates. In conclusion, as individuals we must educate ourselves on reliable, proven treatments of herbology and in turn educate those providers who do not follow similar understanding. In doing so, at the grass roots, the American public can fill in the deficits our current healthcare is lacking, prudently, and safely.

We must first understand a few facts about our medical system. The AMA or American Medical Association is comprised of physicians who approach medicine from a scientific model and mind-set. Over time the AMA grew in power and has had much political influence over the years. Then the insurance companies with their PPO’s and HMO’s grew, in time adopting comparable viewpoints to the AMA. Then the pharmaceutical companies began to grow. Together these three modern staples of American Healthcare influenced the mind-set of the average Joe that the scientific approach to health, an approach that was cost-controlled by what the insurance companies would and would not pay for was the “only true form of healthcare.” Instead of healthcare we have become disease-care driven, treating illness and often forgoing prevention. And let’s not forget that herbs are virtually free if you grow them and prepare them yourself, and that pharmaceuticals can only be purchased through the manufacturer; and so with supply and demand the way it is higher prices can be set to purchase these “needed drugs.” The doctor has become “God” (when did M.D. mean Medical Deity?) meaning that people were not “allowed to question or ask” about anything medical, and that the “word of God” (the MD) was the only way, never to be questioned; and that the only real medicine was pharmaceutical. This is what many in our society not only believe but continue to practice today.

Going From the Darkness To The Light by Donna Amrita Davidge
Cyan Magenta Yellow Black
“Miracles rest not so much upon healing power coming suddenly near us from afar, but upon our perceptions being made finer, so that for the moment our eyes can see and our ears can hear what has been there around us always” Willa Cather. A few nights ago I dreamt that I was doing my Ashtanga Yoga practice. I realized that I was doing my jump backs with hiking boots on. For anyone who does not know what a jump back means, you bend over and hold the floor with your hands beside your feet, inhale, then jump your feet back into a front push-up position or you can exhale right into chaturanga, chaturanga which is a push-up where you hug the body with the arms and your body does not touch the floor. In this pose you keep your whole body straight using the strength of your back, navel, arms and legs (many people think of it mainly as arm strengthening but to make it an even posture all parts need to be strong and aligned). In this dream I then realized I also had many layers of clothes on! I realized it would be better to take the clothes off leaving one layer of clothing on, the normal garb for yoga practice. The interesting thing was the clothing did not seem heavy and the shoes did not seem to impair me. Then the last thing I remember is my NYC Ashtanga Yoga teacher Eddie Stern coming over to assist me in going back into my back bend (wheel or inverted bow) and, since he knows I am not the greatest at this, he said “ We can work on this in the fall” whereupon the pose became really easy and I did it effortlessly, with lightness. When I generally do this posture my body feels heavy, the feeling of bending backwards does not feel light and easy, in my dream it did feel light and I have seen many people do this pose where it does look that way. Over 30 years ago I broke my back jumping out of an airplane in California. My theory is that experience has left my lower left back muscles locked, so, though I can do many types of backbends I am not able to do the deep ones. The interesting thing about my dream is that though it appeared that I had all this heaviness weighing me down I did not feel it in the least! Nor was the most challenging thing difficult for me anymore. It was an amazing dream. Not knowing its meaning, it felt like, despite the things that might be holding us back or weighing us down, these things are not always as they appear. Many things are not as difficult as we perceive and not necessarily holding us back and that things can change for the positive, like my easy light-hearted back bend (ok, it was the one in my dream, I didn’t wake up to a different back!). Things don’t always have to be so heavy! From a physical perspective in yoga, all is about balance and opposites. As we need heaviness we need lightness. Just this morning I had a woman having problems with balancing in crescent moon posture, I suggested she ground her forward foot and back knee more deeply as she lift her upper body and arms. This made a total difference for her. The lower body is the part that grounds us, that relates to earth and the first chakra. All standing posed help to balance this but if we do not have our feet firmly grounded and balanced into the earth and the legs engaged, we can easily be wobbly and lose the balance of stability and stillness that we are working toward in our yoga practice. When we have too much earth element we go beyond being a grounded person and can become a depressed person. With too much heaviness we cannot experience joy! The elements in the body require balance and strength. Water is the element associated with the pelvic region. Too many so us are rigid here and maybe even consider that to be the norm. Many people do not know they can actually breathe into the groin (Donna Farhi has a great book ,The Breathing Book, which I highly recommend for more on this and breathing in general). When we start to regain flexibility in the hips, pelvis and groin the water element frees up. As water is meant to flow, so are our emotions and our creativity. This is the seat of that! Above the pelvis is the fire; as we move up the spine the energy becomes less dense. The navel is the seat of our power. Fire is very powerful and like electricity, can be either very helpful or very destructive. Going from the darkness to the light in the navel is going from fear, insecurity, reactiveness, judgment, anger (being hot around the collar) and jealousy to a sense of self-esteem that is strong and the power of our own inner fire to complete what we have set out to do, just as a controlled fire burns to completion without harming with strength and neutrality. From the lower three chakras we move to the heart. This is very interesting because we all think of air as good and our breath as important, which it is. But, if we have too much of this element we may be very scattered, all over the place and not deeply in touch with our feelings (that is back at the second chakra, folks!). We may be way 18 Inner Tapestry Aug/Sept 2008
into our head. If we are not in touch below then we may have blocks in the heart and the throat. It is all part of our inner process of learning to go from the darkness to the light. Introspection is a useful tool where we can learn about ourselves in a way that things we have pushed down can come to the light, even if getting there inevitably means moving through some uncomfortable times of darkness and discomfort. Watching the breath of someone who is too “pranic” (too much air in, not deep enough to connect and help the lower chakras contribute their elements to the scene!) is like watching someone hyperventilate. Sometimes people think the rapid breath in yoga, either bastrika (breath of fire) or kapalabhati is hyperventilation when in fact it is just the opposite, it is deep and not shallow at all. The lightest element of all (called taatvas in yoga) is ether. That is pure bliss! Last night we did this set at the Sewall House. I woke up very early and felt great! I think it was because we did this. This set is best done in the evening, along with eating lightly, with lots of melons. The recommendation is to do this for 40 days to solidify the effects. Doing it whenever you can is great, too. So I started the article with my Ashtanga dream and now am ending with a Kundalini reality! Enjoy! Sit cross-legged. 1 The breath in this first one is to cleanse the lungs and stomach. It is said the remove centuries of old grief. You lotus must breath fully and really stick the tongue out. Stare straight ahead. Inhale through the nose, rest your wrists on your knees, palms up and open. Exhale, through the mouth with the tongue way out, let the fingertips come up and touch the shoulders (they will touch the back of the shoulders). Do this for 5-6 minutes. 2 Bring the arms straight up into the air; let the palms face forward, the fingers stretch up. Look up for a moment and start to move the left arm clockwise and the right one counter-clockwise. Bring the head back down, so the chin is slightly tucked in and the head is straight on your spine. Close the eyes and focus between your eyebrows. Do long deep breathing in this pose for 11 minutes. Do the whole time going through and past whatever you are feeling physically or otherwise. Breathe deeply and let this support you. This will let you get in touch with the ether element. The heavy elements may want to pull the arms down but keep them up! Let the spine move with this, it’s okay and it gives a nice massage to the earth element energy at the rectum, at the base of the spine. This is good for depression, do this movement for just 5 minutes. Inhale and exhale at the end. 3 Block off the right nostril and breathe in through the left, then block the left and breath out through the right. Continue this same pattern 311 minutes with eyes closed. You can inhale thinking Sat, exhale thinking Nam if you like, which is the Kundalini Yoga focus mantra. This is cooling, calming, clearing and decreases anxiety. 4 Hold onto your knees; make the spine straight and rigid. Begin to rock back and forth, inhale back and exhale forward. This moves the energy along the central channel of the spine, the sushmana. After 3 minutes, come to the center, inhale deeply, hold the breath, tighten the body and shake the body to distribute the energy. Do this 5 times. After each exercise it is nice to take a brief moment to feel the shift in energy that exercise has created. It may manifest as warmth or tingling. The more you commit to the breath and the movement the more you will feel something. That is the gift of Kundalini Yoga. In ending I would like to say to you: Wa He Guru! That is the mantra in Kundalini Yoga of ecstasy and means going from the dark to the light! Never give up your dream of miracles and remember, as Willa said, so much is in our perceptions, which yoga can help us make clearer, or as she said, “finer.” Donna Amrita Davidge has been teaching yoga since 1985. The tire fell off the canoe trailer en route to our wilderness canoe retreat destination. I heard a snap as the axle gave way, felt an abrupt drag as the trailer hit the dirt road and watched in surprised awe as the back tire rolled on by me into the woods. It was a rapid, surreal happening, to say the least! There are two ways to deal with this, one is with stress and panic and the other is with calm clarity. One way hurts while the other doesn’t, with the situation remaining the same. At first glance, it looked like an extremely challenging situation logistically. How do we get to our destination as planned and even more interesting, how are we going to get everything and everyone back home? It could have been a confidence crisis for the clients already on the eager and anxious side, entering a new experience. It also was not exactly the way I wanted to instill a sense of trust on day one into the wild with this guide! The old, familiar reactive way of being brings fear and projection and sounds like, “Something is terribly wrong. They won’t feel safe with me now…" and on and on the mind travels. Something took over that was beyond a small mind and small thinking. I experienced a kindness that looked like a flow of love and service that could not have been orchestrated by the best contingency planner. With traffic blocked on this one lane access road, people began to gather from their vehicles and ask how they could help. We all heaved on the trailer and moved it out of the way. Strangers began untying the canoes and loading them onto their own cars generously offering to complete our transport. Within a half hour, we had all the women and equipment back on track and the tow truck was on the way to get the trailer off to repairs. It was like witnessing a magic act. I noticed I was smiling and amused with the beautiful flow of it all. Periodically my mind would travel to the what if ’s, the now what’s, and the should have’s as they arose. The residual ways of the old paradigm passed by as I would come back to the kindness all around in this perfect moment in this perfect universe unfolding before me. More pearls became apparent. I could see how it was the perfect time and place for a broken axle on this quiet dirt road. The mechanic later said we were very fortunate that it happened at such a slow speed. I got a better axle that is more appropriate for the load and the varied terrain. We all got to witness human kindness without a motive other than to serve another. It was a feeling of being supported, being held by something great and beyond words.

Being Conscious of Tick and Lyme Disease by Kevin Pennell Bethel, Maine
L
ightening up our lives usually includes a life opening to simple pleasures. Those simple pleasures can include listening to the silence as we meditate, taking the kayaks out on a nearby pond, or going on a leisurely walk in a natural setting. If we choose to lighten our load by taking a walk or hike in the natural world, we should take some precautionary measures; otherwise, our destination for inner peace and healing could become a destination for healing from the debilitating affects of Lyme Disease. Lyme disease got its name from the town where it was first identified – Lyme, Connecticut. Many people may not know that Lyme disease has been around for centuries, as evidenced by ancient medical texts, and even genetic analysis of rodent pelts preserved in museums.
an insect bite and thought an ant bit me. I broke out in a welted rash the next day and thought it was a reaction to the ant bite.” Tracy said that several other symptoms began revealing themselves including neck and shoulder pain, flu-like symptoms, heart palpations, fatigue, excessive sleeping, depression, and an inability to keep up normal daily activities. “I always felt sick. I had every symptom imaginable including digestive issues, frequent headaches, muscle aches, and joint pain. I started sleeping day and night and felt as if I were 100 years old. My 70year-old mother was more active.” Many symptoms of Lyme are similar to other debilitating conditions and therein lays a large part of the problem of Lyme Disease… misdiagnosis.
Cyan Magenta Yellow Black
Western medicine identified the illness in 1975. According to the website, Lyme Disease Resource, worried mothers living in Lyme, Connecticut contacted public health authorities regarding several cases of joint inflammation in children in their community. In total, thirty-nine children and twelve adults were studied by researchers at Yale University and given a diagnosis for their mysterious ailment – “Lyme Arthritis.” Further studies identified the bacteria, a spirochete similar to syphilis. Through an isolation process in 1982, the researchers determined the bacteria was spread through a tick bite – specifically the “Ixodes” species of tick. As new cases continued to appear, health officials diligently worked to find a treatment to kill the bacterial infection. The findings revealed two important objectives in combating the bacteria: strengthen the patient’s immune system and relieve their painful symptoms. In our own practice at SpiritWings, we’ve witnessed people who have become infected with Lyme Disease. The disease affects people in different ways. The most common signs include flu-like symptoms, headaches, aching muscles, swelling and soreness in joints, digestive issues, impaired vision, respiratory problems, night sweats or chills, mood swings, depression, personality changes, poor balance, forgetfulness, or memory loss, inability to stay focused, and disorientation. Those are a few of the many symptoms. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Tracy Poland who lives in Greenwood, Maine. Coupled with her story was the story of Jenna Smith, the wife of a close friend. Why these two ladies? Both were very active women whose lives changed virtually overnight. Tracy met Jenna at Tracy’s Oxford Hills Lyme Support Group shortly after Jenna was diagnosed with Lyme. That’s been the case repeatedly. Active people’s lives change from normal to virtuously disabled overnight for no obvious reason. Tracy worked as a teacher in a Head Start program, while actively involved in raising her own five children and “always on the run” with gardening among her varied activities. Jenna was actively involved in a mortgage business along with her passion of working with and raising horses plus competing in dressage events. Both women’s lives did change overnight. “My world changed completely,” said Tracy. “I was sitting under an apple tree nineteen years ago. Deer frequented the area near Waterford, Maine. I found 20 Inner Tapestry Aug/Sept 2008
Prix St. Georges in Saugerties, New York at the Region 8 Championships – two weeks before coming down with a “mysterious” flu-like illness. In a matter of weeks, Jenna went from an active lifestyle that included daily riding workouts to bedridden days in a darkened room. What really frightened Jenna was “the combination of symptoms – acute abdominal pain, body aches and chills, itchy rash, joint pain, profound weakness, debilitating sensitivity to light and sound, repeated migraines, dizziness, brain fog, and wild mood swings – all of which I had suffered with over the years at different times – but separately. Previous doctor visits and medical tests revealed nothing, and the symptoms always resolved themselves so I stopped going to the doctor when something flared up. I never dreamed it was all tied together – and I didn’t know a thing about Lyme Disease (other than the risk to horses!)” Fortunately, a friend introduced Jenna to a “Lymie Old-timer” who directed her to a Lyme-literate doctor. Thousands of dollars and many, many tests later, western blot results returned positive results for Lyme. Then she began aggressive oral antibiotics to combat the debilitating disease.
Jenna Smith and Friend Tracy Poland Why these two ladies? Tracy saw several doctors and counselors through several years. Her diagnoses included, chronic fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, and fibromyalgia, just to name a few. “I searched the Internet for every possibility, but my research still pointed to Lyme. Finally, my angel appeared as Dan Noble who told me his experience with Lyme Disease. He said tests can come back negative and you can still be infected. He gave me the name of a Lyme-literate doctor in Kennebunk. I was diagnosed with Lyme Disease within three weeks, began treatment with antibiotics, and started improving. It’s been a long road, and now I’m taking natural products.”
Both Tracy’s and Jenna’s stories are, sadly, not unique. Many who contract Lyme can share the same commentary. Jenna and Tracy have become close friends through Tracy’s support group. Both encourage people to seek support if they or someone they know has Lyme… even if Lyme is suspected. According to Tracy, some lab tests “come back negative because the labs are not sophisticated enough to pick up the disease because the bacterium hides undetected (usually in soft tissues).” Sometimes, people can be infected though there is no evidence of a rash or bull’s-eye around the tick bite. According to Jenna Smith’s website, Lyme Disease Resource (www.lymediseaseresource.com), “The hallmark of Lyme disease is for symptoms to mysteriously appear and then disappear weeks later, or for pain to move around the body. You can be infected for years without becoming disabled owed to the morphologic nature of the bacteria. In other words, the disease can lie dormant in your body for months or years, taking over when you are worn down physically or if your immune system is suddenly (or gradually) compromised. If you have symptoms in two or more bodily systems, you should consult a “Lyme-literate” doctor. How can you find a Lyme-literate doctor (LLD)? Tracy and Jenna agree that the first and best way to find a LLD is to get a personal recommendation from your local Lyme Support Group. Lyme Disease Resource suggests a visit to Lyme Net (www.lymenet.org). If you can’t locate a support group, a visit to Lyme Net will help you identify a group nearest to you.

f you’re looking to shake your spirit and raise your consciousness to a higher level then make a trip to The Enlightened Professional Center in Bloomfield, Connecticut. At “The EPi-Center,” a nickname lovingly bestowed by patrons and supporters, you will experience cutting-edge programs and services designed to enhance wellness and spiritual understanding. Upon entering, you immediately sense this sacred space is charged with a spiritually clean and potent energy. The wares of local artisans—from murals to sculptures—draw you into alternate dimensions of time, space and ways of being in the world… much like the healing services, programs and special events that fill The EPi-Center on any given day.
“We respect that everyone is in his or her own stage of evolution—physically, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually. This is the simple tenet upon which we base the programs we host for the general public and the event services we offer to holistic health professionals – the folks we call enlightened professionals.”
*Spiritual Seeker Creates Spirit-based Livelihood* Joy and compassion easily extend from Robin, even as we completed a series of interviews by phone. She shared how her journey as a spiritual seeker became the foundation for creating a spirit-based livelihood, culminating in the work she does through her two business entities, Enlightened Professionals, LLC (EP-LLC) and The Enlightened Professional Center. “For many years, while working in corporate operations and event management, I attended spiritual retreats and wellness workshops for personal growth and as a kind of hobby. It took a very long time to realize it was more than a hobby—it became a calling that culminated in my training at Oneness University in India. What I noticed, over the years of going to these programs, was a lack of business operations

“It seemed to me that some very gifted people were struggling to earn a living doing what they felt spiritually called to do. I had the idea that I could help, that I could facilitate making holistic, spiritually based-workshops, events and services more accessible to a wider audience of people. Also, I believed I could make them more lucrative and logistically stable for the teachers, healers and service providers. I just did not have a clue what this entity would look like or how I could do it on my own.”
The Enlightened Professional Center was also created to provide multiple forums for individuals to attend and for holistic businesses and organizations to offer their workshops, events, and healing services to the public. With 25-plus years of business experience in corporate operations and event management, Robin knew she possessed the necessary skills; in order to create what she envisioned she could offer to professionals and the public, she had to allow herself to listen to and trust in a different kind of wisdom. “Trusting my intuition was a starting point for me. Listening to the messages of spiritual guides evolved over time as I began to fully live and fully integrate what I learned from all those years journeying around the world to workshops. As scary as it felt, I allowed myself to follow Divine sources where they led—that’s where and how my businesses were—and still are— created.”
*Programs & Services For Seekers And Enlightened Professionals* Programs at The Enlightened Professional Center strike a balance between Eastern and Western philosophies and traditions. You will encounter presenters from broad backgrounds and all parts of the world: spiritual healers from California to Peru, scientists who study human behavior and physiology, and metaphysical practitioners of every type. Spiritual Cinema offers audiences of up to 100 people the chance to view limited release independent films that deal with consciousness, health, human development, metaphysics, psychospiritual and cross-cultural topics. The Enlightened Professional Center was also created to provide multiple forums for individuals to attend and for holistic businesses and organizations to offer their workshops, events, and healing services to the public. The facility houses a gallery for large events, workshop rooms and a boardroom for formal meetings. Private office space and healing services rooms are available for rent. The professional staff includes marketing and event planners, and an audio-visual team. Additional services include a Talent Bureau for local, regional and national events and promotion packages including media releases, teleconferences, electronic newsletters and traditional marketing. “We’re expanding at a rapid pace to meet the needs of patrons and enlightened professionals as they arise. We have an expansion underway that will bring a metaphysical retail store and daily exercise classes to The EPi-Center,” Robin shared enthusiastically.
*Enlightenment for Everyday People* Based on her experience, Robin pointed out two common, mistaken beliefs about enlightenment. First is the belief that one arrives at a state of enlightenment. The second is that, one must give-up living in the world, physically and materially, to experience enlightenment. She went on to share what she has learned from her spiritual journey… wisdom that grounds her in her life and in her work.

7 Core Principles for Health & Wellmess - Part 3 by Werner Brandmaier
T
his is the last part of this mini-series and the most important one. And it all comes down to this: Our life is a continuous effort to create and utilize energy to support our body and keep it functioning. We eat, drink and rest in order to replenish our resources. We use this energy to maintain a body temperature of 98.6 degrees, to charge up the electrical circuits in our brains, to keep our metabolism going and our heart pumping. Once we die, all this is gone. The body factory stops working, the life force fades, the spirit leaves, the body chemistry turns completely acidic and breaks down to dust. The rotting process begins and helps to complete the cycle of life. Dust to dust. Ready for new life to come. Which brings us to our last two topics of this series; protecting ourselves from the breaking-down process and enhancing and extending life-giving energies.
The last two core principles for health and wellness are:
High frequency bio-energy readings of different types of food.
• •
100 – 150 MHz is the energy found in organic food 70 MHz is the amount of energy our body needs to stay healthy. 40 MHz is the average energy found in cancer cells 3-7 MHz is the amount of energy found in a brand name hamburger Note: SAD (Standard American Diet) values are typically between 5–50 MHz Question: How can a body stay healthy if the energy of major food choices is much lower than the body requires? (Information from research by Robert O. Young, PhD.)
• •
Here is a list of typical withdrawals:
Junk food. (Have you seen how low the energy of a hamburger is?) Anything out of the microwave. (A microwave zeros the energetic value of anything you put in. What a waste of money to buy high quality, organic food if you later heat it up in a microwave anyway...). • Manufactured meat, alcohol, sodas (the worst drink on the planet, diet sodas are even worse!), sugar, most dairy... • Coffee and black tea. • Stress at work, school or home turns our metabolism acidic, similar to food. • Relationship stress. • Worry, depression, financial stress and struggle. • Living in a big city. • Environmental stress, such as geopathic stress and electro-magnetic radiation from electronics (cellphones, computers, music players, I-pods, electronic games, office equipments, microchips in cars and houshold appliances, powerlines, and so on...) bombard us day and night and should be acknowledged as a constant withdrawal in our chi bank account. Just recently we returned from Philadelphia from visiting an institute which works with children facing severe developmental challenges. The staff uses an exceptional program and has a fantastic success rate beginning at 200% above the national average. Still, they are facing a percentage of children who do not improve as expected, and nobody knew why.
• • • • • • • •
Here is a list of practical deposits into our chi account:
High-energy organic food; greens, vegetables, fruit (careful with high-sugar fruit such as oranges, bananas, apples, etc.). Good water, preferably from a natural spring, not bottled in plastic containers. Check for alkalinity levels. My reommendation would be to get your own water ionizer. Fish, cold pressed oils, "good fats." Good supplements, preferably food-based and in liquid form. Regular exercise in fresh air for physical fitness. Yoga practice to calm down the mind. A balanced relationship and a happy family life. Sufficient sleep in a Feng Shui-balanced room. Vacation. Spiritual practice such as meditation and prayer.
In order to slow down the process of decomposing (aging), we only need to monitor one thing: To keep our chi withdrawals less than our deposits.
We try to be realistic and not get too fanatic: enjoy a good cappucino once in a while, but balanced with extra water or, even better, a drink of high energy greens (dehydrated grasses and vegetables mixed with pure water). In Austrian cafes to this day coffee is always served with a glass of water.
What else can we do to enhance our chi?
In terms of Feng Shui and our living environment, we can enhance creation. Have trees and plants around you, grow your own tomatoes and strawberries if you can, have plants and flowers in every room and keep the windows open. Fresh air, moving objects, bubbling water from a room fountain, fish swimming in a beautiful aquarium invite chi and stimulate the energy in your home. With clutter taken care of and geopathic stress avoided, you are set-up to be well and receive the restful, rejuvenating sleep to keep you forever young. If you have questions regarding our work or products or have suggestions for other topics you would like to see discussed, please email me. • The protection from energetic drains • The enhancement of chi within and around us. Health and wellness can be compared to an energy bank account. Everybody is born with an individual amount of starter capital (what homeopathy calls "constitution"). Some people come to this earth with a huge amount of energy/money, some with a much smaller account. Some spend their wealth with both hands and some are very careful how much they put back into their life savings each day. If we look at the daily exchange in a person's life energy account, withdrawls and deposits are exchanged constantly.
Two months ago I had a chance to talk to the founder of this institute explaining the counteracting effect of geopathic stress. Finally, we arranged a meeting with his staff to demonstrate further how draining house energies might affect the children. I also had asked to see some typical cases who were not improving as expected and was able to detect major geopathic impacts. After installing our FENG SHUI POWER PLUS harmonizers at their homes, the blockages dissolved and positive results with the children were noticed within only a few days. These are more extreme examples, however the results are typical. If the body is young and strong it can usually deal with all kinds of extra pressure. Once we turn 40 we start to feel pain here and there, our sleeping patterns become easily disturbed (a young person usually sleeps through a thunderstorm), or allergies might show up which never had bothered us before. If we don't get enough rest, we might need pharmaceutical support and by then our whole system seems to have become more fragile. Now is the time to re-evaluate our lifestyle habits, e.g. start a cleanse, turn to organic food, monitor our hydration levels (water, water, water!), join a gym and begin exercising. We should also consider checking the house for permanent drain areas known as "geopathic stress zones," something not yet well-known here in America. However, just that alone cuts out a major weakening factor and saves a lot of energy we would have to compensation for otherwise.

Cyan Magenta Yellow Black
I’ve been going through a really challenging time and I feel I need some help. My best friend keeps talking about her “guides.” She seems to really believe in them and now she’s begun to deliver messages from them to me! I’m not sure about any of this, especially since the advice her guides give me isn’t something I feel good about following. Do we each have a guide? If so, how do I find mine? Why were my friend’s guides so off in their advice to me? Signed, Needs a Guide Dear Asrianna, For as long as I can remember, I’ve absolutely loved angels! I collect them constantly and they decorate my house. I even have them as pictures and little figurines in my office. But though I have faith and believe my angels are around me, I get discouraged because I can’t actually see or hear or feel their presence. Am I doing something wrong? Signed, Loves Angels Dear Needs and Love, For many of us, wanting to know and feel closer to the loving energies surrounding us is a strong emotional and spiritual need. The wonderful news is that we each have many positive energetic beings whose work and joy it is to help guide us. They seek to comfort and support us in ways both large and small. No request is too insignificant for our spiritual support team! So who or what are guides? They’re energetic beings who accompany us as we navigate the joys and challenges of living in an earthly body. They may appear—as it was for me in my Cherokee family—as animal Totems, plant spirits, winged ones, finned ones or the crawling ones. Whether they’re your lifetime Totem or the porcupine crossing your path at a pivotal time, these loving beings arrive to impart strength, urge caution or provide lessons before disappearing. They work with you to provide wisdom and comfort. There are entire books written on the subject of guides and it seems the most popular regard angels, and spirits of the deceased. Angels are mentioned in various sacred texts. While there are differences of hierarchy and assigned angelic tasks among the angels themselves, with very few exceptions it’s agreed upon that angels have never been in human form. They were created by God to be of service to God and humankind. (Please substitute the Divine name that best fits your concept of a loving Deity.) These angels interact with, assist, and comfort us and we can ask for their presence, strength, love and guidance in any situation. Another area of current interest is that of contacting the deceased. Invoking ancestors and other loved ones through prayer, ritual and ceremony has been part of various cultures throughout humankind’s history. As 26 Inner Tapestry Aug/Sept 2008
a Spiritual Medium I’ve had the honor of connecting many people with their loved ones in spirit. I’ve heard numerous people refer to their departed loved ones as “Guardian Angels,” however angels and the deceased are distinct and separate energies. A precious loved one, however, continues to cherish and care for you and they can—and do—help us in many ways from the spirit world. There are other spiritual energies around us such as elementals, ascended Masters, Avatars, and others, but the ones I’ve given examples of here are the spiritual beings most often thought of and spoken about when I’m approached on this subject. No discussion of spirit guidance can start without a brief mention regarding free will. Many times I’m approached with requests to contact guides who are then expected to provide information on what’s going to happen days, weeks, months or years from now. Regardless of what another may say, the future isn’t written in stone and while we may not appear to have a conscious say in every event occurring in our life, nonetheless we have the free will necessary to choose our responses. When it comes to our guides, they will not—with very few exceptions—interfere in our lives in any way without being asked. And far from being approached too frequently (which can never be the case), our guides speak most often of having to stand by helplessly as we experience life without their loving help and intercession. Make sure to ask for their guidance, love and support continuously and remember they won’t intervene without our invitation. So ask! Personal free will is one of the reasons I advise you to use your fullest discernment when other people approach you to offer unasked-for advice from their spiritual guides. While it’s not unusual for requested spiritual help and direction to arrive in various ways—from a book opened to a pertinent passage to a song whose chorus sings just what we need to hear—there’s need for thoughtful consideration when unrequested information comes from someone else’s guide. Remember that Divine guidance will always be positive, empowering, loving and resonate somewhere deeply within you as being true and for your highest good. Ask yourself some questions. Did you actually pray for that insight, information or specific guidance? While there are many ways to approach the Divine for help, if you haven’t an awareness of requesting the offered information, or if it seems harsh, unloving or unbeneficial, be cautious. Seek clarification, validation and confirmation from your own divinely sent guides. Although I’ve taught entire classes on how to meet guides, here are a few simple steps to help you access their divine help and wisdom. First, decide upon a safe, secure, calm environment in which you can relax and be open to communication. Put a do-not-disturb sign on the door, silence your phone, and take the necessary steps to assure your solitude. You can play soft music, set out a vase of flowers, burn pleasing incense, or have a candle burning (be safe!). Next, invoke protection. Whenever we open ourselves up to the spiritual realm it’s wise to ask to be filled with, and surrounded by, pure white light. I refer to it as a bright, golden white light though you can envision it as a radiance that resonates with you. Request
that you only be in contact with loving energies of the highest vibration and divine light, with your highest good as their greatest concern. Then simply ask. Ask to meet the guide for whom your well-being and happiness is their highest priority. Ask what your guide looks like, their name, or how you’re to recognize their presence in your life. Be patient, it’s not always necessary to have a visual picture of them or even know their name right away. If you’ve a specific need, ask your guides to help you with your problem or challenge. Be open and receptive. You may see images. For instance, angels often arrive as beautiful, radiant lights, in white or even dazzling colors such as violet or blue, soft shades of emerald or pink. Pictures or images might appear via your spiritual third eye or even your temporal gaze. Perhaps you’ll hear their verbal guidance. It may sound like your own inner voice or perhaps as spoken words coming from an outside source. Pay attention to your emotions. An answer may come as a feeling, a sense of an a-ha! moment, a felt rightness, an emotional pull toward—or resistance to— a particular choice. Guidance can emerge as a strong knowing, appearing in your mind as thoughts coming to you in part or as a whole. Ask for, and use, your discernment. Before accepting a guide or acting upon the provided guidance, be discriminating. Not harshly judging or discounting the information you’ve received, but testing it against your inner compass. Remember, even if you’ve asked for help regarding a troubling or painful situation in your life, true Divine guidance and direction will always be kind, loving, patient and beneficial and will resonate and feel authentic to your deepest, highest self. Once you’ve accepted the information as coming from a higher source and believe in its authenticity, then act responsibly on that loving guidance. Make note of the results and consequences. The more you implement the guidance you receive, the more often you put it into practice in your life, the more opportunities you’ll have for seeing the benefit of their counsel. This, more than anything else, provides the strong foundation for knowing, feeling and trusting your guides. Be patient and kind to yourself and leave negative self-judgment behind. Every person connects with their guides at their own best pace and time. Learning to communicate with them is an exciting journey. Enjoy! Signed, Asrianna

Election Time, Lighten Up??? by Norm and Skye Hirst, Ph.D.
E
lection time. Decisions to be made for the next four years and beyond. Elections create an atmosphere that can bring out the worst or the best in us as a nation of diverse organisms. Competition to win has typically been driven by positions and strategies that will negate or destroy the opposition. It’s not usually a time we lighten up. However that might be just what is called for. How might we find our way through in a spirit of cooperation? In the statement that there are certain inalienable rights reserved for all (organisms) are unifying principles worth focusing on. These rights are inherent living processes we share in common and when they are recognized and allowed, something magical occurs; life is lived on a higher moral plain than “an eye for an eye” or survival of the fittest. We transcend our differences and separateness and experience both individual freedom and unity. Organisms do this all the time.
www.mabels,org
understand this with scientific materialism just ain’t going to work. There is nothing in our history of ideas, whether philosophical or scientific, that deals with such living self-acting organisms. Everything until now in our philosophy and science has been an attempt to imitate life with non-living entities not capable of self-determining and self-initiating action. As a consequence, for 2,500 years since the Greek philosophers started us down this path of thinking, it seems our Western culture has learned better and better ways to specialize, to be separate and be nonholistic in thinking and living. Such thinking has led us to great machine-like, scientific materialism producing great machinery, but such thinking has left out the understanding of living process so beautifully operative in all organisms.
Cyan Magenta Yellow Black
Our research focuses on life as organism. When we refer to organisms it can include the cells in our bodies, you and me, or you and me as cells in society, the ecosystem, the economy, or planet earth as a cell in the universe or the USA as organism. We all obey the law of gravity, however we’re going in different directions. Similarly, we all are obeying universal organism laws while developing our individual uniqueness. We thought it might be helpful to focus on characteristics of organisms in this Inner Tapestry issue prior to our national elections. Why? Because organisms function as a pure democracy. Our very own body/mind organism’s existence requires a democratic process. Picture your hand, each finger with separate and unique responsibilities as fingers, yet all working together to accomplish something that the whole hand wishes to do. That’s democracy and that is how organisms work together. Organisms are selfacting, self initiating entities, autonomous – obeying self-law, auto-poetic – self-creating, yet living nested in larger organisms that are also obeying similar operating processes. Each organism is unique, knows uniquely what it does, and what it has done. From this knowledge, organisms find effective action for themselves and for the greater organism in which they live. It’s an on going, ever-changing process. With everything changing how do we maintain ourselves as us? That’s done through coherence principles that keep forming again and again in concert with an identity (DNA is the executor, but not the source). We’ll go into this more fully in another paper. There’s a core identity of each organism that has properties, needs and requirements to act to be true to it-self, while also functioning in relationship to the greater organisms in which it co-exists. Isn’t this amazing? It’s like a giant dancing field of energy points interacting and maintaining one another. This can go on and on as long as there is energy that reaches everyone. This kind of energy also takes much more explanation than we can include here. For our purposes now, let’s say that this energy is exchanging communication in some form; two, three, four, twenty-five and more different kinds of ways, all happening simultaneously – not linearly, but simultaneously. Whew! How do we do that? Trying to 28 Inner Tapestry Aug/Sept 2008
years I’ve lived here, there has never been an accident to my knowledge at that corner. People approach the intersection so slowly and enter into it through a giveand-take, allowing others to go before them in order that they can move through without difficulty. It’s like that giant dance I just mentioned. Everyone is communicating with everyone else. Everyone can see everyone else and that’s the instant communication. To enter into that intersection without communicating, puts you and others in peril. So paying attention and being conscious, noticing what others are doing while you decide what is the best action for yourself is how it works. It’s an effective action for everyone, democratic in all the ways an organism functions, cells relating to cells, etc. So can we make that work in our election process? Good communication with everyone seeing everyone else, listening, sensing what others need in order for you to do what you need to do to act successfully? I just learned of a new journal called Kosmos. In the first issue, I learned how the Fetzer Foundation is sponsoring a project called "collective wisdom" to learn more about these natural “wholistic” group processes. (see www.collectivewisdominitiative.org) There is no time like the present to begin learning how we can do this.
Our very own body/mind organism's existence requires democratic process. So what is a democracy? It’s more than a form of government. It is a process, a collection of individuals acting individually and together to find the most effective actions for life. It is not a constant permanent state. Given the fullness of process, the freedom of each individual to find effective action for him/herself and for the greater whole, it’s a process that works. Not many would say they understand how it works. Our constitution says it’s about balancing power, ideas, and representation as with three separate and equal parts of government (legislative, executive, and judicial). The Bill of Rights talks of the freedom of speech, equality. Democracy and free enterprise (capitalism) have become equated. Freedom to act, freedom to pursue this liberty, and free elections, rights to be represented; all this and more come to mind when we think of democracy. The challenge of life lived by democratic process, requires that we learn more deeply what’s required to form and maintain such a process. Perhaps this is where we’ll find the foundations of kindness and human dignity, and the universal rights that occur within and between organisms to pursue life, liberty and happiness as a unity, connected, but separate. Remember I mentioned several months back about the cities in Europe that were suspending the use of traffic signs in order to restore more civil and safe intersections? Well, where I live in this little town here in Maine, Route 1 goes right through the middle of it. There is a 5-corner intersection with pedestrian crosswalks and lots of people and cars going through, on average 20,000 a day. In the seven
We aren’t going to win this election or any election through “beating” the opposition. This ol' world needs every single organism doing its best to find effective action being fully itself, creating itself, finding ways to grow, learn, adapt and cooperate for the good of all living organisms and that includes this big one called earth. Suggestions you might wish to keep in mind about organisms... • In any given moment of being alive, we have an opportunity to learn new ways of being, responding, acting and living together. • Organisms and societies of organisms and communities can change and adapt, learn and evolve in ways that help them thrive. • Organisms are capable of enormous creativity to find new solutions in concert with life and living processes. • Organisms are connected to other organisms in a unity, autonomous yet nested and relating, contributing and affecting the greater whole. • An organism will act in ways that are coherent with what works for him or her and that includes coherence with the greater whole. • No one single organism functions in isolation, nor understands all that is needed. Can you see the other organisms in the intersection that you are moving through? What do they need so they might pass through safely, as well as you? Processes to grow cooperative understanding: • Ask questions, explore, and invite others into conversation, especially those with whom you may not agree. Ask them how they came to think as they do? How do they know what they are saying? • Ask politicians to answer from their "feelings" about an issue. When they respond to questions with "That's

Snakes, Skunks, Jungle Cats and Bats - Oh My! by Teresa Piccari
A
propros of "lightening up" – our theme for this issue, I'm reminded of advice attributed to Yogi Bhajan, the great master who brought Kundalini Yoga to the west, to the effect that "to be sane we need to laugh and sweat everyday." I'd add that we can also benefit —and maybe get some laughs while we're at it—from understanding the medicine and the messages connected to the animals that cross our path every day.
Waking into Wonder
Jungle Cats
That all changed as I began practicing kundalini yoga and prepared for my Reiki Master attunement. A lush dreamer all my life, I began waking exhausted after a night of extreme dreaming. Beautiful but (seemingly) menacing jungle cats were trying to gain entry to my home, the home where I resided for eight years beginning when I was 10, a home with three entrances. Night after night, the cats would arrive – female lions, leopards, tigers, jaguars and panthers – sleek, powerful and scary in a multitude of stripes, spots and solid colors ranging from buff lions to ebony panthers. In the dreams, I would rush to a door to block a cat from entering. Just as I would have one door secured, other cats would make a run for another door. Then, one night, they were in the house. There was no struggle, they had just entered from another part of the house and were moving freely about. Amazingly, I relaxed. I had surrendered to my fate and everything was okay. One day I casually mentioned it to my kundalini yoga teacher, explaining why I was so tired. “Oh, your power animals are coming out,” she observed. I described what was happening to my Reiki teacher. What kinds of cats, he asked. I described them, adding that there was always a sleek black panther mixed in with other cats that varied. He agreed with the yoga instructor and further told me that many people in the healing arts have a black panther as their totem. Familiar with Medicine Cards, I decided I needed to learn more and turned to the classic Animal Speak by Ted Andrews, which remains my animal totem bible.
Parade of Animals
Once I moved to Maine, animals continued to populate my dreams but more and more, I was encountering the real deals in everyday life. And not just your common animals like deer but moose, fox, coyote and even a wolf, which astonished me. Less than a month after landing here I saw my first flock of wild turkey, crossing the road as I made my way to a friend's home for Thanksgiving and I laughed out loud,
In a moment of cogent knowing, a though registered in my unconscious brain and I woke. There is a bat in the house! thinking these birds are really pushing their luck today. The dog tangoed last fall with a skunk just outside the back door. Skunks, like wild turkey, are plentiful in Maine and all about respect – respect for ourselves and for others, and self-esteem. Peaceful but fearless, skunks walk softly but pack a big bottle of perfume. My basement has housed a hibernating snake – a symbol of rebirth, healing, creativity and transformation. That recent snake reminded me of the snake that crossed the dirt road in front of my car years earlier as I made my way onto Native land.
When Outside Creatures Appear Inside
Nothing prepared me for my latest animal encounter four days ago. I was awakened by some light disturbance. Small crashes and chimes sounding. At first it seemed I was dreaming, as usual. But the noise continued and my next thought was that perhaps an expected storm had blown up and I needed to get up and close the windows. But then I became aware of a whooshing sound traveling from my room to the guest room across the hall. I live in a house that is over 200 years old with an extreme roof pitch. In the bedrooms one can only stand in the center of the room – so there was not a lot of flight space between the night visitor and me. In a moment of cogent knowing – a thought registered in my unconscious brain and I woke. There is a bat in the house! I need to go downstairs and get a broom, not wanting to think about what I might have to do with that broom. I gingerly made my way out to the hall
A Blessing or a Curse?
The next day I could not find the bat anywhere. I grabbed Animal Speak and learned that bats carry big medicine as a symbol of transition and initiation with shamanic implications. Opening of powers to override fears and awakening of keen audio perceptions to discern truth. Eventually I spied the bat between the closed bedroom window and the screen. I raised the window and opened the screen about eight inches, hoping it would smell freedom and flee. It did not occur to me to fear the bat until I mentioned it to some friends. They carry rabies and can bite you without you knowing it. Hang up the phone and either go to the ER or call a doctor, they urged. I called two native Mainers who felt sure I would know if a bat bit me. The woman clearly thought I had bats in my belfry. "Wacky city girl" she must have said to herself. I did not have time to share several raccoon experiences, including being a camp counselor in The Pine Barrens of New Jersey, where raccoons routinely interrupted our sleep by entering tents and because of rabies potential were captured and removed from the campsite by the game warden. Unlike a bat – if a raccoon bites you, you know it!
Our Voice or External Voices?
I spent the day gathering information. On the surface the entire bat situation seemed ridiculous. Timid by nature, a healthy bat will do everything in its power to avoid human contact, preferring mosquitoes. I learned more about bats and rabies that I cared to know. (For information see www.maine.gov/dhhs/boh) Finally, I called the state Disease Control hotline at 800-821-5821. My choices were to have the bat tested, get a series of rabies shots (which are no longer given in the abdomen and not as painful as years ago) or do nothing and hope for the best. Basically, I had to determine whether to listen to external voices and if so, which ones; risk a roll of the dice or trust my gut that I was being asked to take care of myself. I called the county communications number provided by the kind epidemiologist and told the operator I needed the animal control officer. The bat was not easily accessible to me and I knew capturing it would definitely warrant a bite, if it hadn’t already happened. Within moments, Police Chief Ron Young – also the Animal Control Officer and the Emergency Management Director for my town – called back. After conferring with the epidemiologist, he and Officer Jason Trundy arrived.

If I had been awake earlier, before embarking on what I refer to as my mid-life birth in my late 30s – I may have noticed the animal totems in my life. I may have wondered about the buffalo, horses and wolves featured in the Native American art I began collecting in my early 20s. Aside from trying to understand my natural affinity for bison, a symbol of abundance and manifestation through right living, I did not delve into the mystery of the animals I was calling. At the Native summer festivals near my family home it was the buffalo and wolves that kept me transfixed between the stories of the wisdom keepers and the raptor flying exhibitions. Tired family members, clutching their emu oil guaranteed to fix most any ailment and ready to head home, would roll their eyes as I headed off for one last visit with the buffalo. Innocently enough, animals began appearing in the poetry I was writing. Skunks, horses, buffalo, wolves and, of course, the ever present and exhausting coyote, started popping up – gifts from my intuitive self. I enjoyed them without really understanding their antics or the wisdom of their medicine.
Jungle cats are symbols of power and female energy. Black panthers in particular can represent awakening kundalini and not only stepping into one's power, but according to Andrews, reclaiming one's authentic power. And awakening to a heroic quest. I understood why organizations such as the Black Panthers and Gray Panthers, took the animal as a symbol for their organizations.
and looked into the darkened guest room and saw the unmistakable herky-jerky silhouette of a bat in flight. I fled downstairs, certain the bat was on my tail. Armed with a broom I returned upstairs and thought I could make out a brown outline stuck to the screen. I removed a fan from the window and managed to close it. I quickly closed the door to the room. I returned to my room and determining it was bat free, shut the door and tried to sleep.

life mastery your brain with eegmaine. Bridgeside Counseling Train A parent’s quote, “When our and Neurofeedback daughter was 16 we discovered
neurofeedback. She had 14 sessions before end-of-the-year exams and she Elizabeth Millett, NCC, LCPC managed to pass her exams, which was a confidence booster for her.” Neurofeedback can be used for many issues, including attention issues, anxiety, depression, autistic spectrum, brain injury, peak performance and much more. Neurofeedback addresses the problems of brain regulation by allowing the brain to function better. It is training in self-regulation. Neurofeedback is the direct training of the brain, increasing its function, creating greater control and stability. By using computers and electrodes, brain waves can be observed moment-to-moment on a computer screen. Rewards and inhibits are set to optimize brain functioning, the brain is then rewarded for changing its own activity to more appropriate patterns. This is a gradual learning process, which can be applied to any aspect of brain function that can be measured. I have seen excellent results with neurofeedback. Transform your body, heal your soul and change the way you live and die with the ancient healing techniques of the South American Medicine people. The core of
healing occurs in the energetic or Luminous Energy Field; this is the blueprint for the physical body, and an archive of our physical and emotional strengths and wounding. Illuminating this field transforms these wounds into sources of knowledge and power. The loss, pain and sorrow may remain as a memory but they no longer define who we are; we realize that we are not our stories. The Illumination Process is powerful, efficient, effective transformation. In training with Alberto Villoldo, Ph.D. Appointments in Brunswick (207) 729-7270, deb@midgette.org.

There are some very professional and helpful treatment papers available like Advanced Topics in Lyme Disease: Diagnostic Hints and Treatment Guidelines for Lyme and other Tick Borne Illnesses by Dr. Joseph J. Burrascano, who wrote the first version in 1984 – this is the 15th edition and includes all the latest testing procedures. It’s a great paper to share with friends and family to better understand the complicated disease. Seeing close acquaintances and friends stricken with Lyme make me more cautious during my own treks in the outdoors. It’s a matter of walking aware and performing a “tick check” after your time in the outdoors. What should you do if you find any tick attached? Though your first response may be to yank it out, by grabbing tightly and pulling it loose, that is not the best approach. Grabbing a tick this way can leave the head and mouthparts attached while the body breaks free. You may think you got it all, but you didn’t. Grabbing it by the body can force any fluids it has back into what or who ever it’s attached to. A reliable method is to dab alcohol or a medicated salve on the tick and area where it’s
attached, grasp the tick forward of the head and gently pull. The tick will usually let go instead of remaining attached. Destroy the tick by cutting it in half. Then apply a good antiseptic cream, salve, or ointment to the bitten area. If any flu-like symptoms begin see your physician immediately or find a Lyme-literate doctor promptly for testing. Tick kits are available at many outdoor and sporting goods stores. Most come with tweezers and alcohol swabs. Some kits include information for identifying ticks and even vials to save it for testing. Deer ticks are not the only carriers of Lyme. It is within the quiet space inside ourselves that we find answers to our questions and our problems. “Enlightenment is an evolutionary process of mind, body and spirit wherein we realize that we are all one with the Divine Source. Enlightenment, for everyday people like you and me, really is a way of being and a way of living from which all of our actions, thoughts, choices… everything emanates. As each of us becomes more consciously connected to this Source and to one another we are able act in alignment with the flow of energy in the universe. Going with the flow will enable you to create greater peace in your life. Like a pebble in a pond, this inner peace will ripple outward to your friends and families; and further outward across your community, our country and the world. By improving our personal lives, we can create world peace—it has to start with the individual.”

During a recent radio interview that I took part in, James Goi described the need for the creation of this book: "The reason I wrote the book... of course, a lot of what I teach, the metaphysical laws and principles I teach in the book, can be applied to any area of life, but I wanted to specifically focus on money. The reason is, because, as you know, the way the mind works, and the way the universe works in response to the workings of the mind, you have to focus on what you want. You have to really direct your mind power like a laser beam to get those things that you want. And so many good people that I’ve run into over the years – they’re very spiritually minded, they’re very metaphysically minded. They know a lot of principals and techniques, but they haven’t applied them specifically to money. They are always saying, "Why doesn’t this work for money?" Then when you ask them, what have you done exactly and specifically to attract money? They’ve never done very much – that's why it hasn’t worked. They haven’t been applying what they already know. So that’s the focus of this book: to help people to attract specifically money into their lives. In many ways it reminds me of, As A Man Thinketh (1902),
the classic by James Allen, also on the power of thought and attention. James Goi took nine years to compile all of the quotes densely packed into one hundred pages. Though you can read the whole thing in a sitting or two, like me, you may very well consult it again and again, to review the practical exercises and steps, to stay motivated, reminded to focus one’s attention on the desired goal, to reaffirm the vision and keep applying these principles, allowing them to come into manifestation in our lives. That he includes passages from older writings as well as more contemporary sources, I find to be a real plus. For instance, I notice quotes from Henry David Thoreau (1854), Annie Besant (1903), Julia Seton (1914), Emmet Fox (1940), Norman Vincent Peale (1952), Maxwell Maltz (1960), Ernest Holmes (1938), Neale Donald Walsch (1996), Shakti Gawain (1982), Esther and Jerry Hicks (2006), to name a few of the one hundred and sixty people quoted, some of them well-known, others, obscure authors you probably have never heard of, but will quickly come to appreciate. Chapters include: Desire, Belief, Expectancy, Money Mindset, Money Goals, Think End Results, Think and Feel As If, Speak As If, Act As If, Affirmations, Visualization, Environment, Organization, Laws of Money, Intuition, Plans, Right Livelihood, Self-lmage, Personal Energy and Radiate Financial Increase, with sections including "Simple Steps", "Concepts and Counsel."

Tarot Review
by Annie Kelleher
Animal Wise Tarot By: Ted Andrews Dragonhawk Publishing Ted Andrews’ Animal Wise Tarot combines Mr. Andrews’ considerable understanding of Native American and other indigenous peoples’ animal totems with the ancient symbolism of the Tarot. For example, instead of the traditional suits of Wands, Swords, Pentacles and Cups, the Animal Wise Tarot uses animal groupings. The traditional suit of Wands is designated as “Ancients” and are illustrated by reptiles and amphibians. The traditional suit of Cups is represented by insects and spiders, and titled “Shapeshifters.” Swords and Pentacles are represented by birds and mammals, respectively, and are called “Winged Ones” and “Four-leggeds.” Although I found that some of the transpositions worked for me while doing readings – for example, The Lovers are represented by a bee – my more traditionally-accustomed tarot mind had a difficult time wrapping itself around images of bugs where in
most decks, flowers and fruits and dancing couples prevail. Because I do not have the extensive knowledge of animal lore and insights of Mr. Andrews, I found myself struggling with the images on the cards while doing readings. Although the traditional suit and number is helpfully on the card, I found I had to do far more “thinking” while doing readings than I am accustomed to doing. Because I am a visually-oriented person, I found the images of the photographs not only not evocative enough, but muddy as well, and the fussy borders distracting. However, this deck has enormous potential for those who wish to use it to deepen their understanding, both of themselves and the natural world, as well as for those who take the time to familiarize themselves with the considerable amount of information and insight contained within it.

Sacred Companions Sacred Community Reflections with Clare of Assisi By: Megan Don ISBN: 978-0-595-47068-6 Publisher: iUniverse, Inc. Since beginningless time humans have wandered the Earth in search of love. Today, even in the midst of so much violence, addiction, and other manifestations of separateness, our collective human consciousness is growing in wisdom and openness, and we have begun to seek more deeply the love that created and sustains us. Moving beyond psychological/emotional need and “romantic” projections of love, more and more of us seek our sacred companions – within and without. From this soul-longing arises the latest book by spiritual teacher and author Megan Don, Sacred Companions Sacred Community: Reflections with Clare of Assisi. Embodying the guiding wisdom of Saint Clare of Assisi, spiritual companion and teacher to Saint Francis of Assisi, this book gently illuminates our personal, sacred journeys toward the Beloved within, through the mirrors of partners and community. The thirteenth-century life of Saint Clare is a peerless example of the path to God and the relinquishing of the ego-self, expressed both through her personal relationship with Francis and in her role as founder and leader of the radical Poor Clares. Don’s impeccable research and personal and group pilgrimages to Assisi brings to light long-overlooked teachings of great beauty and practicality for us today.
Each chapter begins with a quotation, followed by reflective passages and then two meditations, one for individuals or couples and one for larger groups. In this way, Sacred Companions explicitly supports not only individual work, but also group and community study and contemplation. These teachings are accessible to all: man or woman, partnered or otherwise, whatever your spiritual orientation. Readable both sequentially and through the unsystematic selection of passages, this is a book we are meant to sit with in contemplation, allowing soul-lessons to come into focus. As Don suggests, “… invite the Spirit of God and Clare to be with you.” Alive in the magic of the heart-words on these pages, rest assured they will come. You can purchase Sacred Companions Sacred Community online for $16.05 through the iUniverse website at http://www.iuniverse.com/bookstore/book_detail. asp?isbn=0-595-47068-8. About the author: Megan Don is an award-winning author and spiritual counselor who leads retreats based on the Mystical Pathway. Megan also leads pilgrimages to Assisi, Italy to visit the sacred places where Clare and Francis lived and died. She currently lives in Portland, Maine. The Celtic world has always piqued my curiosity; I am not certain whether this is due to some past life adventure or simple admiration for the roles Celtic women played in the care and protection of the home, the earth, and the spiritual and cultural direction of a society. Any story that brings ancient Celts to life is usually on my list of “must see films and books.” Still, novels and films, while based on historical events or facts, tend to be limited in their ability to accurately depict Celtic life and the Druid lifestyle, in particular. Serendipitously, a novel that balances historical accuracy with story arrived in my mailbox for review: Priestess of the Forest: A Druid Journey by Ellen Evert Hopman is a historical novel steeped in Celtic Druidism. Priestess is a bardic teaching tale in which Hopman weaves Druid history and spirituality into an engaging story set in a fictional third-century Ireland just as Christianity begins to infiltrate the Celtic isles. The tale follows the fate of a young Druid priestess, Ethne, who has been living a secluded life in the woods, specializing in herbal healing of the wounded who are sent her. A Fennid warrior named Ruah arrives at her hut in need of medical attention and, during the long winter, a passionate, soulful love emerges between the two. Come Spring, Ethne is called upon by her Druid masters to take the seat of high queen—and the bed of the high king—in order to preserve the Druid way of life from Christian conversion. The story is told through Ethne’s eyes, giving the reader a true sense of the Druid way of looking at life, death and magic. Ethne must navigate a way between duty to her people and the love in her heart, between politics, war and religion. With few exceptions, the characters are well-developed and genuine. The reader is drawn into their lives, their desires, and their fears. Were this book a “true novel” and not a teaching tale, I would have liked aspects of the plot to have thickened a bit more or conflicts to have been resolved less neatly. For example, Ethne, who admits she “is bound in her soul to Ruah,” easily shares her heart, mind and body with the High King, Crimthann. A child is conceived, and the paternity is in question (but not to give away the plot), suffice it to say Hopman too quickly and easily tidies-up this issue. All things considered, I highly recommend this book equally to readers who are new to the Celtic tradition as well as those who practice Druidism or related earth-based spirituality. Hopman, co-chief of the Order of the White Oak and a Druidess of the Clan of Dana, is the author of several books on neopaganism, druid herbology and spiritually. In Priestess, her first novel, she recreates the magical and medicinal practices of daily Celtic life, politics and spirituality during a tumultuous period in history. Weaved throughout the story are Druid celebrations, holy rites, rituals, herbology, crafts and much more. The book includes two glossaries for the uninitiated—one on the characters and one of Celtic terms. At the back of the book there is a resource list for further study and an informative interview with Hopman.

From OM to Orgasm Tantric Yoga by James Bean
“From OM to Orgasm – The Tantra Primer for Living in Bliss.” by Chandi Devi and J. Ram Sivananda
Cyan Magenta Yellow Black
ISBN: 9781434349606 Published by Author House: http://www.authorhouse.com/ BookStore/ItemDetail~bookid~47637.aspx Website: http://www.TheWorldOfTantra.com Now I know what you’re thinking: “Oh no! What does sex have to do with spirituality and exploring the world religions?” There’s this funny saying I once came up with: "If your parents never had sex, chances are, you won’t either." On a more serious note: The art of tantra, despite what some in the West have done to present it in a way that is divorced from its holistic, traditional Hindu context giving it a different sort of reputation, one might say, nevertheless is very spiritual and integrated with other aspects of Hinduism and the Yoga system. I recently interviewed Chandi Devi, one of the authors of an impressive new book on Tantra yoga. Below is part of that conversation. James: Thanks for joining me, Chandi, to talk about your new book. Chandi: Hi, James and thank you for having me. James: It’s my pleasure. What really impresses me about your book on Tantra is how Hindu it is, which actually makes sense of course! Tantra is a practice that comes from the Indian tradition, emanates from the subcontinent of India, but I notice it’s a book as much about Hinduism, Yoga, and spirituality as it is a book about sexuality. For some reason here in the West, Tantra often gets abused, reduced to sex only. I notice that sort of cultural filtering or tampering sometimes can be an issue or danger with certain teachings from other parts of the world. I can think of several examples where groups or teachers based in the West have gone into business, grabbed and repackaged ideas they have picked up on, perhaps without even being on good terms with Eastern Masters, ending up giving reduced or edited versions of teachings or techniques, yet actually claiming to speak for, or represent, a certain discipline. But if one should happen to get acquainted with the original path or discipline back in India, one realizes that the “imported” version is only providing part of the picture, not the whole thing, as we’ve seen with Tantra, in this case: just the physical component perhaps without the spiritual being included. Sometimes imitation is not the highest form of flattery. [Laughter.] Chandi: Yes, Tantra has its roots in Hinduism. It’s very spiritual and there are no shortcuts. Like you were saying, the subject of Tantra has been treated in the West as merely a yoga of sex, and with no preparation necessary, you just get into it and get as much of it as you like. They have reduced it to that when it is so much more. Tantra is so divine. We wanted to show the people of the West in particular that Tantra is a path. It is not 46 Inner Tapestry Aug/Sept 2008
a recreation, and it is not pedestrian sex. Sex is a part of it because in Tantra we accept everything as worship to God. If you approach everything that you do as a method to reach God or as an acknowledgement of His divine-ness, then your approach to living and your way of thinking – everything becomes transformed. Tantra is about transformation: transforming the base into higher states of consciousness. James: And meditation is part of Tantra as well, visualization, or what you would call inner techniques? Chandi: Oh definitely! Meditation is the first step. Before even approaching Tantric sex with a partner it would be very helpful if the parties involved would have already established some kind of meditation practice, because in the love-making they can bring this meditation knowledge or awareness into the sex act. This is what gives it all its power and makes it so ecstatic.
I think it is very important if you have some knowledge of the Right-Hand Path, which is the meditation practices, chanting, reciting mantras, journaling, contemplation – all of that. It’s important to have a little bit of that background, because when you approach Tantra without that, it can wreak havoc on you – it really can... and I had first-hand experience... but with the knowledge that what you are doing – all the techniques, it just makes Tantra a lot more understandable. If you just dive into Tantra and say, “Wow, this is great. I can have sex all night long!” That’s not Tantra. It can be part of it, but that’s not it. So basically, Tantra is about energy, taking that energy – sexual energy, and transforming it from the base of your spine all the way up to your Sahasrana, the Seventh Chakra. You can do it through meditation, or chanting, reciting mantras – it’s also done with a partner. The whole process is for evolvement of the soul and not a de-volvement. Now, what’s happened is that, if you bypass or skip the preparation part of Tantra, you miss a whole lot of the practice. That’s where the joy is. That’s where the permanence is. You can experience temporary awakenings if you want to call it that, or experience a shooting energy going up your spine and showering over your head and everything, but, unless it is maintained and cultivated and nurtured, you can lose it. You don’t want to lose something like that. Once you have it you want to keep it. You want to treasure it and take care of it. For
this reason you do the other practices we mentioned earlier, all the practices, the basis of Hinduism. James: So Tantra practice is part of that same journey of ascension: going up the chakras -- consciousness rising, in other words. It is another yoga or path towards that same ultimate experience? Chandi: Oh yes. Positively it is yoga, with all the same terms, concepts and principals, such as karma, ego, dharma, maya, being mindful... all of this is included in the practice. It is not a frivolous path of pedestrian sex. That is not what Tantra is, and there are consequences and dangers if you approach it in that way. That’s why we wrote the book, because we’re trying to show people how they can maintain this ecstatic state by just doing some simple things. Granted, it is hard. We don’t have enough time to do all the things that we want to do, much less to sit for an hour or two a day when you’re in traffic for an hour or two a day, but what we did was try to also include exercises that can be done in five minutes or less. Just simple things you can do. The book is for people who have very busy schedules, also want to practice in private and not have to go to workshops or classes, but they want to improve their relationship with their partner. Tantra is the best way to improve your relationship and build intimacy with your beloved. If you want to experience spiritual sex, all of these things have to be considered. In the book we cover exercises to do. There are many illustrations as well, quick tips, and charts that can help the seeker, the practitioner as they try to experience this path called Tantra. In this book we have attempted to present the facets, the gems of light that make for a successful and orgasmic life, not just sexually, but spiritually as well. Once you have the information, it is important to get out of your head and into your heart, for there is where the real magic and transformation takes place. This is our true center, where all the reflected light of the galaxies, the stars, and the planets affect our entire being. Nityananda said, “The heart is the hub of all places; go there and roam.” Quote from the book: “We can meditate, chant and do all the practices with reverence, and we can still be “light,” and at ease about it. We can laugh even in the midst of a meditation, or dance, or during sex and savor the moment. Meditation doesn’t have to be serious business and it should not be. Have fun with it, have fun with your partner. Laugh, love and live with passion. Being spiritual doesn’t mean you should become pious, have no sense of humor, or become rigid in body and mind.” Prayer at the end: May your life be blessed, May you see only beauty Know only peace Hear only harmony And feel only bliss. May you live always in sex, love and joy. Hari Om Tat Sat OM. Cyan Magenta Yellow Black
I cannot thank those two men enough. In recent weeks there was a referendum on whether to keep a full-time police chief and three part-time officers on staff – which passed by a slim margin. If they weren’t around, I would have been out on a limb trying to get help from an overburdened county system. Not for a moment did either of them, or the state epidemiologist, ever make me feel foolish – even though I did. Still, I’d rather be a middle-aged fool than a dead fool. All this happened on a Friday. I did not fret over the weekend. Once I made the decision to act and take care of myself, I knew that whatever the outcome – everything would be okay. By Monday afternoon the call came saying the bat tested negative for rabies at the state public health lab in Augusta.
