I nner W orkings by Ron Damico & Joan Emmons NEW THIS ISSUE: Welcome everyone, we hope that you were blessed and enjoyed a gentle transition into 2012. The gentle breeze that brought this new year to us, seemed to blow in on the winds of a tornado into my life. So many changes happened so rapidly that I'm still waiting for the vortex to drop my house in the land of Oz somewhere hoping that all I'll have to do is click my little red shoes and find that inner center, called home. I didn't have a clue, when I chose the title for this issue "And So It Begins," that there would be so many new beginnings. I do not know many people who are totally OK with change. Most people that I known have some sort of resistance and that resistance has been described lately as ominous. When asked what they were actually feeling the one word that was consistently used was void. So many people since the beginning of the year have shared that they feel a void. So change, new beginnings, and a feeling of being in a void. Sound familiar to any of our readers? The void as described is the place of creation, the space or place of nothing and within that nothing is everything. So journey forth and allow yourself to be in and with that void, that space of creation, where you have access to all that you are and all that you choose to manifest yourself as. It is the most wonder-filled times when we are suspended in the inner space of "the void of creation" —nothingness. That leads me to our website, we are currently in a void of sorts creating a new look for the journal and our hope is that it will be up and functional as you are reading this. But our best laid plans can be swept away and changed in a moment so thank you all for your patience.

We would like to take the opportunity to congratulate Norm Hirst on his 80th Birthday! Happy Birthday Norm, we have been blessed to have shared and grown in so many ways with you over the years as new ideas emerge from your column. If any of our readers would like to drop a note to Norm in celebration of his 80th year of life, you may do so by email to hirst@autognomics.org.
Inner Tapestry's Mixed Media section will also be changing. We are working on a new format that will allow us to bring more books, CDs, websites, and products to our readers. Please note that we will always welcome book reviews and encourage anyone who would like to share their experience with a book or CD to please send them to us at www.innertapestry.org. We would also like to encourage anyone who has an experience with Yoga, T'ai Chi or meditation that they would like to share to write to us. There are so many wonder-filled stories that people have shared over the years and we hope to inspire more readers to join classes and groups in their areas. An exciting expansion for the journal comes to us through a large change in the lives of Leo Knight Tallarico and his wife Deborah. They have been friends of Inner Tapestry for many years and business associates, as they were the publishers of Spiritual Renaissance, a journal widely known in Maine. We are excited and joyfilled to have the opportunity to have Leo continue his writing "Perspectives From The Sky" within the pages of Inner Tapestry. Welcome Leo! Our best wishes go to Leo and Deborah as they explore their new beginnings, expansion of their offerings and the continued success of their center in South Portland, ME. We also would like to welcome back Rassouli, who was so gracious to allow us to use another one of his paintings for our cover. You can see more of his work on page 8 of the journal. Thank you all for taking this journey with us over the years, for continuing to support the journal and us both professionally and personally. We have found so many talented people and so many sincerely grateful readers. This new beginning is dedicated to all of you. Know that you are all loved so deeply and held in the arms of grace always. Here we go...

The Committee of the Yarmouth Wellness Fair would love to assist other communities in hosting Wellness Fairs. We have extended this offer in the past and have received too few enquires. Is this the wrong way for alternative health care providers to display our practices and talents? We don’t think so! We have the experience of six successful years of hosting our fair. And we know how we have become more of an accepted service in our community. If you ever wanted to but didn’t feel you could organize a wellness fair, we’re willing to help you get started. Knowing what does and doesn’t work, not having to reinvent the concept, creating the team that supports the community and our practices are some of what we can guide your group through. And we have references from our exhibitors, sponsors, and visitors on how the fair has benefited them. For you that read this letter in print or online, we will start meeting in January for our April 14th fair date. Contact us at anytime through Doug Reighley at 207 749-1961 or dareighley@comcast.net. You are welcome to attend our planning meetings and at least attend our fair. We want to grow our concept, raise public understanding on alterative health practices, while growing our networking of practitioners. Please take the next step in creating your own community wellness fair! Doug Reighley, LMT, RPP

COMMUNAL LIVING: MYTH OR REALITY by Espahbad Dodd
T
he conscious impulse to create intentional communities among humans began perhaps thousands of years ago. Without diving into history, suffice it to say that a resurgence of this ancient concept began in the late 1960’s and early 70’s. One of the early, relatively successful experiments in communal living is The Farm in Tennessee, which was started by a group of idealistic hippies. The success of that enterprise, together with the inspirational work of pioneers, Helen and Scott Nearing, largely provided the impetus and blueprint for the back– to–the–land movement that spread rapidly in the 70’s to many parts of the country. Unfortunately, the practicalities of being self-sufficient and living off the land proved too difficult for most people, causing the majority of fledgling communes and communities to disband. Nonetheless, a few survived and some have even thrived to serve as models and guiding lights for the New Age.
An “intentional community” is a planned residential community involving a much higher degree of teamwork than ordinary communities do. Members typically hold social, political, economic, or spiritual visions in common, and tend to follow alternative lifestyles. They usually share responsibilities and resources. Intentional communities have varying purposes. Creating family-oriented neighborhoods and living ecologically sustainable lifestyles are common themes. A primary focus rests on the benefits of living in close proximity to friends and kindred spirits. While some communities are secular, others are spiritual. Egalitarian values or themes like voluntary simplicity, interpersonal growth, and/or self-sufficiency are also common ideals found among community members. The New Age – the Age of Aquarius – will distance us from the rugged individualism of the past and move us into an era of greater understanding, trust, compassion and cooperation. Freedom and egalitarian values will take precedence. Projected to last about 2,150 years, this new age is bound to be a highly significant period of time for humanity. The Age of Aquarius is “when humankind takes control of the Earth and its own destiny as its rightful heritage,” according to astrologer Vera Reid. Enlightenment is the destiny of humankind. Reid believes that the immediate crises we face are attributable to the Age of Pisces’ waning days. – a transition period that could take 280 years. Indeed, this is a propitious time for more of us to pool our resources in community.

A more affordable lifestyle The availability of extra hands when needed Shared skills and abilities that are far beyond those of a single person or family Idea exchange and creative group problem-solving that lead to betterformed decisions More efficient use of limited resources Companionship and group activities to provide a welcome relief from more solitary lifestyles Standards and guidelines intended to help structure a richer, healthier life
Of course, in the pursuit of these ideals, challenges are likely to arise. Finding suitable land can be a major stumbling block for some groups, especially because many of those who are most likely to be interested may be of limited means. The land must be affordable, rentable or simply made available for use. Gathering a serious, hardworking and compatible group of residents with similar values who willingly share their knowledge, experience and resources may also be a hurdle. As well as paying for the land itself, the group must find a way to secure adequate financial resources for communal facilities and basic infrastructure. I’m connected with a small group of people who have wanted to live in or create an intentional community here in the western mountains region of Maine for some time. We initially planned a co-housing project and then became involved with a large eco-village undertaking that went belly-up. More recently, we’ve focused on initiating a small, unpretentious settlement. Our emphasis is on simple, off-grid living, working with nature in ways that promote and foster individual spirituality. Personally, I want to be involved in a community that respects and works in partnership with the environment. I want to be in a community that challenges each individual to live up to his or her fullest human possibility thereby ensuring that the collective thrives. I also envision diversity of age, gender, race and belief among the members. With this in mind, imagine a small group of people of varying ages with unique skills and abilities sharing the common purpose of living in harmony with the natural environment. Eight to 15 households (small cabins) dot a landscape of woods, fields, ponds and streams. The small individual homes are of diverse construction, off-grid and powered by a combination of renewable energies. A sustainable lifestyle is contributed to, in part, by the settlement’s commitment to reduce, reuse and recycle. Our group is currently negotiating the terms of a 180-acre farm on the Sandy River just north of Farmington, ME. Anyone interested in such an endeavor, either as a possible resident or as a resource provider, is encouraged to contact me for further information. Espahbad Dodd (207) 409-7429, espahbad@gmail.com.

Now, on the doorsteps of economic, political, social and geo-physical upheaval, the need for people to be working and living together is more vital than ever. With the systematic, rapid breakdown of the institutional structures many of us have come to rely upon, it’s more and more important for us to pool our limited resources, knowledge and abilities to carve out more self-sufficient, environmentally sensitive lifestyles. Be it a food cooperative, a worker-run enterprise or a neighborhood association, any project that brings community together moves us in the right direction. It’s my contention that small eco-villages, settlements and farms are destined to play a major role in shaping our collective future. Even in the face of the challenges and risks that come with such endeavors, the enormous reward of creating a culturally richer, more affordable and harmonious lifestyle make the effort well worthwhile.
The advantages of living in community in close physical proximity to family, friends and kindred spirits cannot be underestimated:

ddictions are so ubiquitous in our society today, that every one of us probably knows someone who is dealing with this issue. For these persons living with addictions, beginning anew and finding their way into recovery can be an enormous and terrifying prospect. From my own experience as a person in recovery, as well as from nearly 20 years of working with hundreds of persons struggling with addiction, I have seen firsthand how intimidating and difficult this transition can be. Who knows when each person living with an addiction will reach a “bottom,” the moment when they are really ready to change? Usually it is when the devastation in their lives has reached a point where the fear and the other obstacles to giving up that addiction are finally dwarfed by the overwhelming pain that they experience in each moment of their now bizarre parody of a human life. The fun ended long ago and only misery remains. Having reached this point they are no longer really alive; they barely exist as slaves to the next high, the next drink, and the next steps on the descent into oblivion. At this point, it is only in a state of complete oblivion that a person living with an addiction can find any relief from the truth of what they and their lives have become. Paradoxically, that bottom can also be a moment that is as beautiful and wondrous as it is painful and tragic. That is because it is also the point of awakening, of opening to the possibility of turning their life completely around. Taking that step, they can arrive at the gateway to redemption, the gateway to healing and to restoring a life that once was, or towards creating one that could never have been before. This redemptive capacity is our amazing potential as human beings. No matter how badly we have screwed up our lives, renewal is possible in each and every moment. But while the possibility of renewal exists, for the person who is crawling out of whatever dark place they have fallen into, feeling completely consumed by shame and self-loathing and keenly aware of what they have become and what they might have been, that possibility is a remote flicker on the horizon. One way to understand the process of addiction and recovery is through a simple model of the Matrix of Connectedness. This model, which is inspired by the Buddhist understanding of interconnection as well as feminist relational principles, was initially developed by looking at the components of a rich and fulfilling life. It suggests that persons who are truly happy have many well developed connections at every level of their life. Those levels include physical well-being, emotional health, personal relationships, and community, environmental, and spiritual connections. We humans thrive with connections and wither when they are lost. For persons living with an active addiction, the process of their disease has destroyed their connections at every one of these levels. While consumed with physical gratification in one sense, the addict usually has a complete disregard for their physical being. Exercise, preventive health-care and dental care are all ignored. Even the basic biofeedback loops that alert us to the status of our body are severed. Often persons have engaged in behaviors that have put them at risk for serious infectious diseases. Of course the alcohol or drugs have also taken their toll on body and mind. The person whose addictive disease is active also cannot afford to have an emotional life. If they were to do that, they would open the door to the guilt, shame, fear, self-hatred, and all of the other painful feelings they want to avoid. Aided by their substance of choice, they create a barrier, blocking most of the usual human emotion. When this emotional barrier has been established, often the only emotion that remains is anger. Anger serves the person who is shut off in this way well, by providing a weapon that can be wielded anytime a caring person tries to penetrate their highly developed defenses. 6 Inner Tapestry February/March 2012
Personal relationships have been devastated. Anyone who can maintain a relationship with someone who is far along in the spiral of addictive decline, is likely either another person suffering from addiction themselves, sharing the mutual infatuation with their substance of choice, or is someone painfully trapped in destructive co-dependency. Healthy, genuinely nurturing and supportive relationships are a thing of the past. The person’s addiction driven actions have seen to that. In reality, they only have one love, the substance that is taking their life one day at a time. The compulsion is so strong that even death is often not an adequate deterrent. The addicted person has probably also turned completely away from the community, or the community has rejected them because of the destructive nature of their disease. In addition, once the addiction has done its terrible work, they can no longer see the natural world as anything but an inconvenience. They are completely closed to the glorious sunset, the walk by a stream, and the magic of the first snowfall, the many moments of connection to nature that do so much to restore our being on a daily basis. Finally the addicted individual has only one altar at which they worship and one god, those being the bottle, the needle, or the pipe and the substance they contain. This is ironic, because from one viewpoint the pathway into addiction can be seen as a quest to fill a spiritual void, to find a profound source of boundless connection, or what AA refers to as a Higher Power. As an individual begins again, the process of rebirth means that they will need to rebuild and restore their connections at every one of these levels. That is a nearly insurmountable task that will take many years. Many persons estimate that it takes 5-10 years before the transformation can reach a point of real stability. Acquiring the faith, the hope and the strength to move towards that faint light of possibility is far too much for any individual to accomplish alone. That is why recovery almost always needs support. Recovery takes a community. However, before the recovering person has the strength and stability to merge back into the Matrix, into restored relationships in the broad community, their fellows in the recovery community need to provide those fledgling connections for them. The first steps are always halting and uncertain. The person has forgotten how to live in connection, how to be really human. They need the training wheels back on the bike for some time. However as the process continues, something remarkable begins to happen. Their Matrix isn’t just restored; along with every aspect of the recovering person’s being, it is completely born anew! The person in recovery has a zest for living that can only come from having passed through the darkness of their disease and the struggle to emerge from that darkness. Even more importantly, being in recovery means that the person is living a conscious, thoroughly examined life. The individual must constantly evaluate their place in the Matrix, their thinking, their relationships, their moral and ethical character and their relationship to their spiritual source. They are once again fully productive members of society who are engaged as partners, family members, employees and neighbors. Filled with gratitude, acceptance and serenity, and devoted to helping and serving others, they can live what AA calls “a life second to none.” In that sense, every one of us, even those who don’t have an addiction, could benefit from living in that way. How much better could our society be if millions more of us lived in a manner that is consistent with this pathway of recovery? If you or a loved one is in the grip of an addiction and would like to learn more about the process of recovery and the resources that can help, please contact us at Innovations in Recovery (innovationsinrecovery.com). We would be glad to hear about your situation and offer information that may help.

Awareness and the Art of Seeing: Contemplations on the environment and interconnection by Jen Deraspe
Without A Clue
I began to notice how I could still walk, very slowly and deliberately. (I have been wanting to really slow down.) I could still move all the joints in my leg and that felt so good. I could shift weight, back and forth, to and fro, like a balanced tai chi master, moving together with the wind through the palm leaves. I could feel the earth supporting me. There was breath, sun, and sky. There was dance, subtle and quiet dance. Woman in park, home, content. I don’t know what the future holds for this body – this knee. It’s so disillusioned to think I ever did. My mind wants to predict, to know, to control the outcome, to change the past. When I travel to these places mentally, there is only anguish. When I open to life, to pain, to (perceived) limit, to what is and actually see and experience how that serves me on the path, there is peace. I become a comrade with reality.
So, I keep watching and learning. I sit and I stand in it, in the not knowing, in the experience life gives me. Every time I notice my mind taking me away, I return to earth, sky, dance, now, now, now. I notice all that I can do, the gift in slowing down to a crawl, to honoring the machine, the vehicle that got me here, as I give her more care and tenderness than I ever have. Jen Deraspe is wintering in California on a personal quest, testing the possibility of sustained peace, independent of circumstance or condition. She is a holistic life coach and founder of Nurture Through Nature Retreat Center in Denmark, Maine. Jen is available for holistic coaching immersions in person, by phone or Skype. I
hurt my knee in an impulsive, spontaneous moment of trying (too) hard. I heard a “pop” and was down on the ground, writhing in silent pain.
Almost immediately, images came to mind showing me a very limited, dreary future; no more yoga, skiing, tennis… the images kept coming… pain, deformity, osteoarthritis, knee replacement, disability…all in flashes like a horror movie. It all seemed so believable. No wonder the pain escalated. Believing these images as proof of what was to come left no room for being present or calm. Intelligence left the space. Panic entered. I have used and abused this body for most of my life. It has been an innocent servant, a means to an end, doing what I want whenever I want. It has never stopped me from anything I wanted to do. What a great friend! Ah… but, this day stopped me cold in my tracks. I was left with little physical movement and an over abundance of mental movement interpreting the event, making it mean so much about what was to come. The next day, I wanted to sit outside and find some internal sanity. I got dropped off at a beautiful park lined with palm trees. It was wonderful to experience the warm, bright sun, the light breeze. I got still and the moment overtook me. I found myself standing, still and tall, grounded. Beyond the mental projections, I was infinitely OK. Without naming what was happening in the knee as “pain” or “disability”, it was simply an interesting sensation. When I began to question the projections of all that I would not be able to do, I realized all that I could still do.

The thoughts creep back in, unexpectedly, as I take a tentative, unaware step. It happens so quickly and powerfully—this pull into the past or future. “I want my body to remain strong.” “I need my body to recover fully.” I notice the thoughts, question them and see what is on the other side; realizing peace is more real and lasting with a mind that is strong and recovered, from its trips into a future that never arrives.

"...and man created God in his own image" by Rassouli
Our friend Rassouli is back with us this issue. One of his newest works of art is "...and man created God in his own image." This may not be the image of God that I grew up with but this artwork shows what I would say embodies that essence.
work of your own related to the theme of the painting. You could choose to share a title for the work, a poem, a drawing of your own, pictures, something that you have sculpted or been inspired to creatively cook.
Rassouli's first Inner Tapestry article can be found on our website. His work appeared in the December January issue of 2009 with a piece called "Pray for Mother Earth."
The intension of this venture is to create "the unity that could develop through the variety of creative expression that we share with each other, each from our own unique perspective and feelings. Hopefully helping us to develop our ability to express what is important to us and encourage us to become more creative in how we relate to others and how we live in our lives."
Rassouli has expanded is offerings in California to fusing dance with painting. He recently partnered with renowned choreographer, Banafsheh Sayyad, to create a one day creativity retreat designed for the participant to be more creative in how they live their life through dance and painting dance.

nd so it begins... 2012 has arrived and, whether there is some prophetic galactic convergence on the winter solstice in December or not, change is upon us. There has been a fundamental shift in the world that we can no longer turn a blind eye to. It is starting to affect the daily lives of more and more people. The circus-like distractions of the mainstream media are no longer able to divert our attention from what is happening. The basic tenets of fairness and rule of law have been broken by greed and selfishness. Free market Capitalism is failing, the climate is a wreck, and the already-scarce resources of the planet are shrinking every day. Hubris and fear threaten to tip the world into chaos. The world is much in need of correcting. There is an old Chinese proverb that states if you want to correct the world, correct the state; if you want to correct the state, correct the family; if you want to correct the family, correct yourself.
The time is now to pay attention to yourself. Let things happen by allowing yourself to be guided by the present moment. Focus only on that which is before you. Cultivate an attitude that is concerned with what is essential and correct. Leave the rest be. The force of inner truth influences us. No matter the darkness we find before us, going through it is the only way to reach the light. Be simple in your needs. Be sincere in your interactions with others. Be serene in your state of mind. It is the only path forward. Wishing you much peace.

Staying present can be a challenge for yogis who live in the mountains and meditate every day. For the rest of us in today’s crazy world it is downright impossible. But we must now do the impossible if we want to avoid the inevitable. Yes, there is too much going on and it may often feel like you are one inch from the edge, however, if you are to continue on this journey and bring peace, love and light into the world, staying present is vital. Staying present provides a solid ground from which to focus on difficulties as they arise. It is a way to take control of things and get your life in order. It is no longer an option to spend your time distracting yourself as you try to escape from being present. There are three ways of distracting yourself from staying present: Looking Forward, Looking Backward, and Looking Sideways. Looking Forward is focusing on the future. This happens when you become diverted from the present moment by wishing or wanting things to be different. It also happens when you seek to protect yourself from imagined consequences of present situations or when you try to find ways to undo what you have done. In reality Looking Forward is merely an attempt to escape from a present moment you are unhappy with. The truth is that the only way around a problem is through it. Face your difficulties with courage and honesty. The creative power of the universe is available if you are able to acknowledge the power of right and good. Looking Backward is focusing on the past. This happens when you spend your time wishing you had made different choices and blaming yourself for things that have happened. You also are Looking Backward when you feed your ego by congratulating yourself on things you have accomplished. Looking Backward is another method for escaping from the present moment. It is time to let go of all of the baggage you are carrying. If you are dragging all of that stuff behind you it is impossible to open yourself to new opportunities and experiences that appear before you. Looking Sideways is looking at anything but yourself in the present moment. This happens when you spend your time comparing your situation with others. If you gauge your rate of progress through the rate of progress of others it is very easy to get caught up in envy and resentment. Envy comes from the perception that others have more than you do and resentment comes from the perception that others have it easier. The truth is that everyone is on his or her own journey. Each of us has our own struggles. Someone’s good fortune is not to be looked upon with covetous eyes. Turn your attention away from what other people do or have. Focus on yourself. When you are not satisfied with your lot in life it is very easy to get drawn down into a negative spiral of fear and disappointment. Focusing on Looking Forward, Looking Backward or Looking Sideways is a diversion from dealing with the present moment. When you are distracted by wishing, wanting, blame or resentment, you February/March 2012 Inner Tapestry 9

It is time to correct yourself. It is the only way you are going to make it through this. You can no longer live in distraction and fear. You must now turn towards what is good, and right and just. This means taking responsibility for yourself and owning what is yours. It means you must start working on being present in every moment of every day and maintaining balance along your path.
are unable to act spontaneously as the moment demands. If you are looking at the goal rather than the needs of the moment, it is very likely you will stumble over something in the road. If you are looking back at where you came from rather than the path forward, you are likely to run smack into something. If you are looking around at what the other people are doing rather than paying attention to your own life, you will get lost.

welve years ago, I would watch my now sister-in-law, drop and do ten each time she passed the fireplace in her bungalow living room. Often times she’d have to put down the laundry basket or a kid to complete her regimented sit-ups, push-ups, or jumping jacks. “There’s no time for the gym but if I do something each time I pass the fireplace, by the end of the day, I’ve had my workout,” she’d say. I thought she was crazy. I chalked it up to her days as a captain in the United States Army. Maybe that routine was hard to let go of. Still there was no arguing she was in great shape. She was almost ten years my senior, had four small children, and was in much better condition than the twenty six year old me. There was something to her madness; I just wasn’t sure what it was. Working out had never been my thing and doing it in five-minute spurts throughout the day was just plain depressing.

Seven years later, carrying an extra ten extra pounds and two babies of my own, I sought the advice of a nutritionist to get myself into shape. Her recommendation was a novel one: eat less, exercise more. The eating less part, was a struggle but doable. Exercise more? With two small children in tow, how the hell was I supposed to do that? “Forty five minutes of cardio, six days a week,” was what the nutritionist prescribed. I laughed. Week one I decided I’d do twenty. Usually between 7 and 8 at night, after my husband was home, dinner was done, and the kids were cozy in their jammies, I’d hop on the treadmill and huff my way to the day’s end. Week two my husband helped me set up a little black and white TV in eye shot of the treadmill. By the end of that week, thirty minutes was not that big a deal, the length of Seinfeld or a cooking show.

Over time, my “fast walk” became a routine, one I barely broke. By the end of that first month, I’d worked my way up to forty-five minutes that often became an hour to finish whatever program I’d started. Exercise was becoming something I looked forward to. It made me feel good and I was seeing the difference. Five years later, while sitting around the pool a friend asked me if I wanted to go for a run the next morning. “I don’t really run,” I said. Sure I was still doing the treadmill most days, but that was only a kinda sorta run. My friend was a real runner, the kind that did marathons. “We’re going tomorrow morning at 7, just join us.” “Okay,” I said, fully planning to cancel by text around 6:45. But the next morning I found myself more curious than tired. So I went. Three women, all runners, and me. For the first mile, I talked non-stop. If I could wind my way through a conversation, I might forget that I was not on my treadmill. By mile two, I was feeling okay, good actually. And by the time we reached the coffee shop that was our finish line, I felt like I could keep going. I did it. Until that moment I wasn’t even sure I wanted to do it. Running long distance had never been a goal for me but slowly, step-by-step, jog-byjog, I was a runner. This morning out on my now daily jog, I thought of my sister-in-law and her crazy regimen. I get it now. Life happens incrementally. It’s daunting, impossible even, to “get into shape”, “lose twenty pounds”, “find the love of your life” or “write a novel.” But if you do it carrot-by-carrot, date-by-date, word-by-word, most things are possible. You just have to be willing to drop and do ten.

A Promise of Beginnings by Evelyn C. Rysdyk
In the bleak midwinter Frosty wind made moan Earth stood hard as iron Water like a stone Snow had fallen Snow on snow on snow...
Cyan Magenta Yellow Black
February is upon us. It is a time to celebrate that we have arrived at the halfway point between the Winter Solstice of late December and the Vernal Equinox that marks the astronomical beginning of spring. By this time of the year, even the trees seem to be longing for their leaves but we in Maine know we have a way to go before we’ll be shedding our winter fleeces and wool sweaters. On one hand, we can take comfort that the days in the Northern Hemisphere are now noticeably longer and the additional daylight provides a decidedly moodelevating effect. On the other hand, a deep, impatient ache for flower blossoms and warmer weather has definitely set in! The snow has taken on a grimy appearance and the landscape looks depleted and gray. Thank heavens for the chickadees gleefully calling their cheerful “dee-dees!” Their musical whistles are a soothing balm for any winter-weary heart. It is easy to see why our ancestors needed to celebrate the beginning of winter loosening its grip on the land. The many different ways our predecessors celebrated this time all honor themes of hope, renewal and rebirth—energies our souls desire most as we wait for the return of the growing season.
the worst.” Even though we may still have terrible storms here in the North, we know that our mettle has been already tested and we will survive to see crocus blooms gracing the garden. It is a time to look back over the struggles and trials of the past year, take stock of ourselves and bring our attention to those things inside of us that we wish to change or encourage. It is an opportunity to honor the fires of Life’s forge that temper us and make us stronger. It is also a time to renew our efforts toward manifesting our spiritual goals and nurturing the fires of our soul’s purpose. Literal fires have their place at this time of the year, too. Ancient Irish celebrations of the Goddess Brigit or Brigid were celebrated with fire. As a solar deity, Brigit/Brigid was considered a goddess of fire, light and creativity. She was honored as the protective matron of metalsmithing, poetry and healing – especially the kinds of healing provided by herbalists and midwives. Traditionally, the Goddess Brigit/Brigid was celebrated through the ritual kindling of a sacred fire all across the Celtic world. These fires symbolized her role as guardian of the fires of birth and healing, the fire of the forge, and the fire of poetic inspiration. The Christianized celebration of the renamed Saint Brigit also honors the fire but in a different and more tame way. The Goddess’ traditional celebration became the Christian day of, Candlemas, the time when all the candles that would be used during the liturgical year would be blessed.

Celtic pagan traditions honor February 2nd as Imbolc. Falling at the exact point between winter and spring, the name Imbolc means “in the belly” or “in the Mother.” It is the time when the Earth Mother is pregnant with the coming spring. We can almost feel the palpable stirring of the seeds under the dark blanket of soil. As the frost retreats and the cold yields to the Sun’s warmth, the Earth’s growing season will begin anew. The Earth Goddess is no longer the Winter Goddess/Crone but transforming once again into her fertile aspect. The promises made by last summer’s seeds will be kept in the arrival of new leaves and flowers. Our world will grow lush with fresh foliage. In warmer regions where the grasses are already green, the prelude to lambing season is underway. Indeed, an alternate name for this season - Oimelc - means “milk of ewes” as the ewes are heavy with lambs nearly ready to be born.

mood-elevating effect.
At this time, black bear cubs are being born, too. They have arrived into the world while their mother has been drowsing in her den. Now weighing only about ten ounces, their mother’s milk will nurture them to over two pounds by the time of the Spring Equinox. The sow bear supports her cubs with rich milk and body warmth while she is still hibernating. Since the fall, she hasn’t eaten, drunk or eliminated waste from her body. By any standards, this marvelous feat is nothing short of miraculous! The ability to bring forth life after what, by human standards, could be compared to a death-like state, has associated the bears with the powers of the Earth Goddess. This comparison certainly makes a lot of sense. After a hard winter, the soil looks completely incapable of bringing forth new life. Yet contrary to appearances, every spring the blessed, green shoots poke through the barren soil to stretch their way to the light. Like the Earth herself, the bear’s ability to disappear into the ground and then reemerge at the end of winter with new life scampering at her feet, suggests a kind of magical death and resurrection. In keeping with this idea, contemporary Druids think of this time of the year as one of spiritual rebirth. As winter wanes, we can honor that we have “survived 12 Inner Tapestry February/March 2012
American traditions of this season are usually confined to the celebration of Groundhog Day, which is a day to predict the coming weather. This tradition began as a Pennsylvania German custom in southeastern and central Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries. Folklore tells us that if the groundhog sees his shadow, there will be “six more weeks” of bad weather but this tradition has its origins in ancient European weather lore, wherein a badger or sacred bear is the prognosticator. An old British rhyme tells us “If Candlemas Day be bright and clear, there’ll be two winters in the year.” Of course, a bright day means you and the groundhog will see your shadows! This weather lore may stem from the even earlier Gaelic folklore around Imbolc. The Gaelic people believed that Imbolc was also the day that the Cailleach or Winter/Crone Goddess gathered her firewood for the rest of the winter. Legend has it that if she intends to make the winter last a good while longer, she makes sure the weather on Imbolc is bright and sunny, so she can gather plenty of firewood. If however, the day is grey with rain or snow, it means the Cailleach is asleep! The belief is that since she isn’t interested in gathering firewood, the winter must be nearly over. In the ancient city of Rome, they celebrated Lupercalia from February 13 through February 15. In keeping with this time being a prelude to spring, this archaic rite was connected to fertility. In Roman mythology, Lupercus is the god of shepherds who is identified with the Roman god Faunus, who is the equivalent of the Greek people’s goat-legged god, Pan. The festival, celebrated on the anniversary of the founding of his temple, was called the Lupercalia. After a huge sacrificial fire and feast, the priests cut thongs from the skins of the sacrificed goats, which were called februa. (This word is another name for this festival and the root of our word “February.”) The Lupercalian priests then dressed themselves in the skins of the sacrificed goats – in an imitation of Lupercus – and ran round the city using the skin thongs to strike people. Girls and young women would line up to receive lashes from these fuzzy whips as this ceremonial gesture was supposed to ensure fertility, prevent sterility in women and ease the pains of childbirth.
13 Another special day in February has to do with a metaphoric fire. It honors the flames of ardor when our hearts are full of love! On Valentine’s Day we celebrate how the fires of love stir us and the warmth of romance overwhelms our senses. Given this date’s close timing to the livestock and land’s fertility, it makes sense to honor both romantic love and lovemaking during this midpoint of winter! Love brings warmth to the heart and the promise of lovemaking brings heat to the entire body. Certainly, throughout Nature the “fires” of fertility and of continuance, are in the air. The birds and animals are getting ready to bring a new generation into the world even as the internal clocks of the trees and plants have started the return of the green. Over the long winter, the trees have lain quietly dormant. As the days are now becoming longer and rain more frequently replaces snow, conditions support the trees to initiate their own renewal. Roots awaken first and begin to move water and nutrients from the soil into the rest of the tree. As the water rises, it mixes with the simple sugars that the tree stored during the last growing season. The resulting brew is the tree’s sap. Through that amazing green molecule, chlorophyll, a plant is able to capture the power of sunlight. It then synthesizes sugar from water and carbon dioxide in the process known as photosynthesis. Plants and trees are literally able to create their own food from sunlight, water and air! Sugary sap is transported around the tree by vascular tissues that function like our veins and arteries. Just like a phlebotomist might draw a vial of our blood, we can tap a tree to draw off some of its sap. Maples and birches have particularly sweet sap that can be boiled down to make delicious syrup and this marvel is the year’s first sweetness, as fruit trees will not offer their bounty for many months. When the sap begins to run again, it sets the stage for the time when the spirit known as the Green Man and his court will make their reappearance. Like the “resurrected” bear, the Green Man disappears in the fall and doesn’t emerge until the warmth and light begin to return. Once the first shoots appear, we know that very soon tree branches will be heavy with leaves and the air will be hazy with pollen. Flowers with fragrant perfumes will tempt insects swarming around our

Before long, the park will fill with people again, too. Grinning dogs with lolling tongues will be racing after tennis balls and splashing through mud puddles. Moms will jog along the paths pushing strollers and school children will be looking longingly out their classroom windows. Their imaginations will bloom with daydreams of baseball and tossing Frisbees under blue skies. As the season unfolds we’ll become intoxicated once again with the beauty, the freshness of the air and the promises each new day delivers. We are so antsy for spring to arrive; our hearts are practically thrumming with anticipation! However, for now we’ll have cultivated a bit more patience. While we wait, we’ll have to be content with honoring the blessings of the returning Sun, the trials which have strengthened our resolve, the returning warmth of the land, the promise of nature’s fertility and the magical heat of love. With bonfires and candles or hearts and flowers – we’ll encourage each other to remember that we’re half way to springtime! Happy February! © 2011 Evelyn C. Rysdyk

In The Beginning Is Life by Norm Hirst

e live. How well we live depends on our appreciation (sensitive understanding) of our home in the world. There seems to be deep changes in our world. It is as if while I am soundly sleeping I am moved to a new location. If the new location is very different I cannot proceed on the basis of memories. I must learn again. I face the unknown.
“God particle is a nickname I don’t really like,” says Archer, a plasma physicist who has become a popular science presenter. “It’s nothing to do with religion – the only (theoretical) similarity is you’re seeing something that’s a field that’s everywhere, in all spaces.”
Facing the unknown can be a terrifying experience. It is not surprising that we invent all sorts of reasons to avoid it. We create frightening myths. Such myths may be based on current truths, but to serve our avoidance needs, they become myths.
However, I am pleased to see that Archer said it has nothing to do with religion. We hear of people who confuse the God particle with God and fear for their religions based on the existence or nonexistence of the God particle.
Myth 1:
Cyan Magenta Yellow Black
One such myth, allegedly based on the Mayan calendar, predicts that the end of life on earth will occur in December 2012. That is certainly frightening enough to be shoved aside. We can choose to not believe it. A former MIT classmate now lives in Mexico and is far more familiar with the Mayan calendar than me. He informed me that Solstice 2012 marks a Shift into a New World Age Cycle; an essential part of this transformation process is for humanity to re-connect with Nature’s wisdom that we may find balance, harmony and life-affirming paths for the evolution of human culture. I am impressed that much of the now current new age thinking aims to find balance, harmony and life-affirming paths for the evolution of human culture.
Myth 2: This myth is based on the seeming ability of technology to solve all our problems. I say seeming ability because there are problems technology cannot solve. Artifacts and living entities function by incompatible principles. Artifacts are assemblies of parts. Living entities grow as wholistic single entities. When artifacts fail to function they can be taken apart and reassembled, perhaps with some new parts. Once done there is no creativity in the way the parts function. When a living entity fails to function it cannot be taken apart to be fixed. Instead we rely on it, as an organism, to have enough internal creativity to cure itself. The basic skills to fix an artifact are based on physics as a fundamental science. Thus there are many myths in defense of physics. In physics there is a standard model of twelve fundamental particles and their interactions. There may be holes in the model suggesting a new particle that would fill the hole. Usually the particle is found. But in the case of the Higg’s Boson, it remains hidden after years of effort to find it. Why is the Higg’s Boson called the God particle? “The popular nickname for the elusive particle was created for the title of a book by Nobel Prize winning physicist Leon Lederman – reportedly against his will, as Lederman has said he wanted to call it the ‘Goddamn Particle’ because 'nobody could find the thing.'

I also don’t like that its name has been reduced to mislead its meaning.
Our work at TAI is to develop metaphysics to understand a changing world. Metaphysics is a theory of what can be meaningfully asserted as the most general character of that world. The dominant worldview has been based on substance metaphysics, i.e., matter. Thus we ask, how does life happen? In spite of all the effort, money, research and technology dedicated to answering the question, I see no meaningful or coherent results. Indeed, given the characteristics of matter it is absurd to think that it can account for self-acting entities. To understand self-acting entities requires a different metaphysics based on a domain of life, not matter. Basically metaphysics specifies what it is reasonable to look for in a new domain of inquiry. Based on matter we might look for the action of forces. Based on life we look for the action of values. For example a manager wants his company to reorganize. He might then think about what forces he has to force change. For example he might give orders to change, or perhaps award prizes for obedience. But of course he is dealing with living entities. The conditions of life tell us it will not work. We’ve sometimes asked managers what role they think force can have. Most say none, but that they too often like to think it does. On the other hand, a wise manager recognizes that his people are all-autonomous and will enlist their aide in creating a new vision. The new metaphysics for life, also called organismic metaphysics, shows what is involved and how it all functions together.

to help others do so. His reply “ I am hanging on by a thread and mantra is my rope.” His answer was humble, truthful and forthright. There was power in that, true power. Those who are greedy and force their agenda at the expense of others and the planet (nature) must be struggling with their own threads (yogis would call this unconscious – not awake to awareness) and feel that someway their way is their rope. Perhaps in that way we can look at these individuals and corporations and say the other person is me. It is still quite challenging to do so when they are destroying others’ lives, wildlife, forests, waters and the eco-system of nature in the name of saving the planet when they are not. For those of us whose rope attached to our thread is nature; the oxygen giving trees, the starlit nights, the song of the bird, the flight of the soaring eagle and the eerie cry of the loon, this destruction brings sadness to our hearts and a necessity to learn ways to quiet the mind. As humans we suffer – may it be physical, mental or emotional and the gift of yoga and meditation helps us stay in the present and deal with life as it happens. Mr. Iyengar says that pain is inevitable and we need to embrace it as well as the pleasures. Even in our yoga practice he says we must embrace the pain, find comfort in discomfort (Light on Life, page 47). Iyengar explains this is not forcing or gritting the teeth in our poses. He explains we must not run from the pain, but go through it. We must learn not to lose our happiness when pain comes. Yoga, then, is much more than standing on your head. We all live in these changing, challenging times. Each day offers us at the same time the opportunity to be hopeful, grateful and in awe of this complex body that serves us with sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell – to appreciate our families and friends who give us the opportunity to learn and grow and support each other. Yoga gives us the opportunity to cleanse and purify the mind daily, to self assess. The poses purify the body as the breath and meditations/mantras help to cleanse the mind, to calm the nerves. No matter what chapter of life we are beginning or ending, we manage, as Krishna Das said, to hang on by a thread and discover our ropes for ourselves. Hopefully our ropes are ones that bring us to better health and happiness- yoga, nature, mantra, breath, good food, good company, thoughts of courage and hope and clarity. To reap these benefits include at least several sun salutations each day, find an experienced qualified yoga teacher who can work with you at your level. If that is not available there are good DVDs available for home use. It helps to have a teacher that can suit your level and situation, including physical and mental considerations. Yoga is not a one size fits all practice. It can be overwhelming to know what style, teacher, level is right for you. Feel free to write me with questions at info@sewallhouse.com. Find a few minutes a day to sit quietly focusing on breathing through your nose with your spine as straight as possible. Sit in a chair if you need to. Whatever your challenges are, physically, mentally or emotionally, yoga is a way to help you face each day’s challenges in a stronger way; it is a tool to be used progressively as you grow in wisdom and knowledge.

n the Mayan calendar, it is the end. The Piscean Astrological Age is ending and the Aquarian begins. For years Yogi Bhajan, the Master of Kundalini Yoga, spoke about this transition. He gave us a specific sadhana, spiritual practice, for this called the Aquarian sadhana, which has been done for the past twenty years until 2012. Well, here we are. Now what are we supposed to be experiencing? This age is said to be a shift in consciousness. Each age is. This one is about shifting away from group consciousness, such as organized religions, that tell us how to live and what to do, into an age where we realize these things for ourselves and realize our connection to all instead of our separateness. The other person is you. Can humanity ever get this? At a time of Occupy Wall Street and other places like Occupy Augusta in Maine we seem more separate than ever. Could the unrest and uncertainty worldwide be a part of this transition? Changes come fast in these times and blind-side us. Unknowingly I have been thrown into the fray in our tiny town in northern Maine, home to two stunning highly ranked and historic lakes, rich with wildlife and surrounding untouched forests. Fifty industrial wind turbines, the size of forty-five story buildings, are scheduled to go up on our shores, killing the trees, migratory birds and endangered bats, casting bright red lights on our waters where once was black sky and one of the five best places in the country to star gaze. The humans too have been impacted in places like Mars Hill and Lincoln, where these industrial monsters have come in blasting the hills and clear cutting. The companies claim this will get us off foreign oil and decrease CO2 emissions when in fact this is not true. It is a convoluted game of power, greed, misrepresentation and a gold rush created by government when a law was pushed through to take away scenic and wildlife considerations, always the high point of Maine’s existence. I saw Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth. I believe in global warming as Polar bears eat their young, cannibalism their only way to survive as the ice melts. Until it was in my own backyard I did not know the pitfalls of wind power. It sounded green to me. It isn’t. (http://www.aweo.org/problemwithwind.html) for more info-http://www.windtaskforce.org/ And so it begins again, might just be here we go again. Looking back at history, Jesus, who ushered in the Piscean Age, showed his anger at greed and people getting rich at other’s expense by turning over the tax tables in the temple. Humans have a hard time overcoming their lust for greed and power. Those motivated so strongly by this force put their agendas on those who they can control. Are we entering the Aquarian Age with the chaos before the calm? Optimistically it would be good to hope so. Nostradamus predicted this as the end of things but did he mean the end of organizations that control us or – Armageddon? Occupy Wall Street has no leaders. Can that be possible? Millions of people are doing yoga. That is a good step, though it has also broken into different groups and legal battles rage within yoga as well in the Kundalini Yoga movement. There are court cases about money and power within the organization since Yogi Bhajan passed in 2004. Bikram is once again suing people who use the poses he has franchised. Does this look like we are in a time where we are all one? Recently I saw an interview with Krishna Das, a well-known chanter on the kirtan circuit in Yoga. He travels the world leading group chants. He was asked in the interview if chanting brought him enlightenment and if he leads chanting

Being A Part of the Ecosystem by River J. Lee
Our deep love for life and this planet makes many of us want to live intentionally connected to the earth in good stewardship. In that vein, this column explores sustainable living, practical skills for nurturing the inner hunter/gatherer and stories from the wilderness.
Cyan Magenta Yellow Black
During the winter, my family and closest friends gather over dinner to celebrate life and each other. Almost all the food at our meal is farmed, hunted or gathered by the people around the table. It is our choice to be conscious of what we eat, to know where our food comes from. As we sit together, our conversation inevitably turns to the stories and highlights of the year. We work hard for our food and are grateful for the abundance and fertility of the land. Our food comes from the Kennebec River watershed in Maine and we are a part of the ecosystem here. We are sustained by the rich soil of the river valley, tidal waters, mudflat ecosystems, mixed hardwood forests, and bogs with their floating mats of vegetation. The fire in the wood stove warms and fills our hearts as the food fills our bellies. That fire represents a mountain of trees and hard work. We cut, split, moved and stacked the twelve cords of wood that’s in our back yard. This wood should last us three years. After storms, we keep an eye out for fallen trees and if our neighbors agree, cut them up and haul them home in our three quarter ton pickup truck which is shared by several of us. We try to get as much of our firewood as possible this way. We all enjoy the slower pace of winter, but the farmers among us probably enjoy it the most. Their work load turns to a frantic pace in the spring and does not slow until the ground begins to freeze. Several of our members work at Goranson Farm which is organic and family owned. One of our friends works very hard at her organic Dig Deep Farm and grows vegetables on an acre of land. Year round, our vegetables come from these farms: potatoes, carrots, beets, greens, squashes and much more! The farmers in our group drag themselves home late at night, tired, with hands gnarled and black from working the soil. I don’t think I’ve ever met a harder working, happier bunch of people. Close by is an abandoned orchard that has lots of old apple trees and a productive blueberry patch. Several of us frequented the blueberries and picked enough for a year’s supply of blueberry jam. After hot mornings of picking several gallons of blueberries and wild raspberries, we hurried home and put the canning water on the stove to boil. All afternoon we sweated as we filled and sealed the liquid essence of summer into glass jars and processed them in the boiling water. Early fall; when the peaches, apples and sumac ripened we spent our days harvesting fruit and canning over the stove. We made apple sauce, apple butter, peach jam, peach chutney, pickled peaches and sumac jelly. We had a bumper crop of peaches from the trees in our yard and the apples came from neighborhood trees. We put the extra apples and peaches in bags and froze them in one of our freezers. We dried sumac seed clusters and stored them in paper bags so that we could have our favorite “sumac lemonade” all year round. I helped some friends process their chickens. It was dirty work, but honest and among friends. They sold half of their chickens to neighbors and local friends, paid the help in chickens and put the rest in their freezers. We all went home with chickens in payment and gratitude in our hearts. When the pumpkins were almost ripe enough to be made into pies, waterfowl hunting season began. I spent my days up to my chest in water among the wild rice fields in Merrymeeting Bay. I flushed the wary birds and used a shotgun to reach out and bring them down. I felt completely immersed in nature, soaked, my legs moving slowly through the water that was heavy with rice stalks. As a snack, I ate the creamy
and raw rice kernels right off the stalk. Rice does not become hard until it’s dried. Most of the ducks that I encountered in the rice fields were Green Wing Teals which are our smallest dabbling duck. They would dabble for the rice after it fell from the stalks and sank into the mud. Stalking is my favorite method of hunting for ducks because I can be immersed in the environment. I’ve stalked wood ducks by walking and crawling through bogs. In rivers and lakes that have forest adjacent to them, I like to creep to the water’s edge, hiding behind trees and bushes. I stop and listen and it doesn’t take long for the ducks to make noises so I can figure out where they are. Once at the water’s edge, I’ll wait until some ducks swim close enough to shoot. I often fail to bring home any birds and this keeps me humble. I also like to hunt birds from a canoe. This involves hiding in the boat among grasses and trying to call the birds, or paddling and flushing the birds. This season an eagle showed me where some Wood Ducks were floating on the water. I had been following these ducks with my canoe and I had just given up going any further. An eagle flew by and circled just over the stream around the next bend in the river. The eagle was looking down and I thought that it might be looking at the ducks. I decided to paddle around the next bend, and sure enough there were two Wood Ducks. Though I had an advantage, they still got away. Following the eagle’s direction was a spectacular hunting experience. We had two productive cranberry picking expeditions this year. During the first trip we went to a sandy edge of a bog and picked lots of berries from the low lying bushes. We found turtle shells that had been dug up from the sand and eaten by predators. The children were fascinated by the turtle remains, though an unseasonable hatch of mosquitoes left us all itchy. The second trip to the cranberry bogs was after some heavy rainfall and we planned to use a canoe to access the floating islands. The mats are thick enough to stand on, but they do have a tendency to sink slowly when standing near the edge. We found that much of the cranberries were close to the edge of the islands and were underwater. We would thrash our hands through the submerged bushes and then scoop up the floating cranberries. On our way back we saw some waterfowl off in the distance and thought they were large enough to be geese. We paddled our way towards them while hiding behind islands. After the last island, we paddled as fast as we could towards them and were grateful that we got our limit of two Canada Geese. We had feelings of gratitude for such a bountiful day… about eight gallons of cranberries and two geese. In the weeks before Thanksgiving, deer hunting season began. I wanted to be at my spot in the woods an hour before dawn so I would get up around three thirty in the morning. After breakfast I’d walk into the forest by the glow of my headlamp. The night forest was quiet and the stars were visible between the naked oak branches. Slowly the dawn spread through the canopy and the flat light of early day penetrated the forest floor. The squirrels woke up after the sun was up and accepted my still figure as a natural part of their world. In my sitting and waiting, I asked with my inner voice for whatever was best for the deer herd population, the earth and for my people to take place. This year I did not bring a deer home though I was grateful for the rich experiences. I saw two deer, but didn’t shoot because I did not have good clean shots at them. In December the trapping season began and I looked for nuisance beaver to harvest. I try to trap beaver in those places where they have created problems for people. Beavers often will plug culverts that drain streams under roads, and this can lead to costly road washouts and repairs. This year I took beaver from an area where they were causing problems for the land owners. I brought the population down,
We work hard for or our food and are grateful for the abundance and fertility of the land.

17 which should help land owners, and left the rest of the beavers. From the beaver we get meat, lard and warm furs for clothes. Mid winter is a great time for ice fishing and when the lakes have frozen solid you’ll find a crew of us out on the ice. When the moon is full we’ll pull our sleds out to the lakes and enjoy the rich life we have under the stars and glowing moonlit snowscape. Perhaps we’ll have a fire and perhaps we’ll catch some fish. And if we’re supremely lucky, we’ll watch the northern lights dance across the sky. I am grateful and blessed to be a part of such a rich family, community and ecosystem. I am grateful to live out my dreams of inter-connectedness and living close to the earth. May you be blessed with fulfilling friends, family, peace and an emotional connection to the earth. Perspectives From The Sky by Leo Knighton Tallarico
T
here has been powerful movement for transformational change all over the United States and the world recently. People are viewing their lives and consciousness and health in different ways than before. Selfimprovement, holistic living, and healing have become more and more important to everyday lives. This movement is not just about being healthier. It is much more than that. It is part of a fundamental transformation of human living here on Earth. We are entering a big new season for humanity, a time to evolve on our way to an Aquarian Age.
Cyan Magenta Yellow Black
Astrology is a reading of Universal cycles as seen in planetary movements. The cycles of the Universe are an extension of nature itself. In nature here on Earth we witness cycles, caused in large part by the relationship between Sun, Moon, and the Earth. Night and day are parts of the cycles. The change of seasons is another face of the cycles. The Moon and its phases from New Moon to Full Moon is another cycle that affects our human life on Earth, the ocean tides, and evidently human behavior as hospitals, mental wards, and police stations which are known to have more action at Full Moons. The vast majority of humans recognize these cycles. But there are more cycles that affect us all that we are less aware of as a collective human family. Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are planets that have cycles too with the Earth, the Sun, the Moon, and each other. And astrologers know that these cycles also affect our human family, our lives and consciousness. And one of the biggest cycles is the changing of Ages, based on the precession of equinoxes. This cycle is over 2000 years, and after that many years we change from one age to another. The Pisces Age began near the time of the Roman Empire and Jesus Christ. We are now on the cusp of the Aquarian Age, in my estimation beginning in about 2020. So much of the transformation of our lives now is in alignment with this changing of Ages. The Arab Spring, the Occupy Wall Street movement, the changing economy, the increasing natural disasters and climate change are all symptoms of this great change of Ages. Our individual desires to engage more in holistic healing modalities, to find more connections and Unity, to change our consciousness and beliefs, and to connect more spiritually are all in alignment with this changing of Ages. In 1965/1966 there was a very important conjunction of planets Uranus and Pluto in Virgo. They make conjunction with one another every 130 years of so. Uranus was discovered in 1781, at the time of two very important revolutions: the American and French Revolutions. Synchronistically, Uranus is about breaking down controls by authority and giving equal rights to all individuals. Pluto was discovered in 1930 at the time that Ghandhi was leading a rebellion against the British Empire. Pluto is about the power of transformational change. The conjunction of Uranus and Pluto in 1965/1966 brought on the ‘60s revolution, which brought huge social change and rights for women, blacks, and others. It also was an attempt to change the system, the establishment, and to end what was seen as an unjust war in Vietnam. People then were singing “Dawning of the Age of Aquarius” and change was sometimes overwhelming back then. And now 47 years later the next big interaction of Uranus and Pluto since the conjunction of 1965/1966 has begun. Uranus and Pluto are square to one another from 2011-2016. The revolutionary and evolutionary energies promise to 18 Inner Tapestry February/March 2012
be even more powerful and transformational than in the ‘60s because we are even closer to the Aquarian Age than before. The pace of change accelerated in 2011, and will increase even more in 2012. We are all being asked to release old patterns and beliefs that keep us stuck in unhealthy, dysfunctional situations. What we have been programmed to believe from a dying paradigm, attached to a dying age, is ripe to be let go of. The power of purging and healing will get stronger and stronger. As you let go of the old, you open your heart and soul to new light and new truths, to greater love and compassion. Fear keeps you stuck in bad situations. Trust of the Universe and your “Authentic Self” allows you to make healthy changes. As you move more fully into your Authentic Self, you are open to the messages and synchronicities from the Universe and your own inner wisdom. Each time we move through an important astrological formation, as the recent eclipses in November/December have shown us, we are taken off of our usual balance and are more ready to release old ways and to have breakthroughs into new realms of consciousness and healthier ways of living. This ongoing column for Inner Tapestry will show the coming astrological aspects and will attempt to give you, the reader, a sense of the potential collective experience that will result from the aspects. Of course each person’s individual natal chart would reveal the extent to which that individual might experience the aspects. Nevertheless, important astrological aspects do affect us all to one degree or another.
February/March Astrological Highlights: In late January Mars, the planet of action, will, desire, forcefulness, empowerment, self assertion, and aggressiveness goes retrograde until April 14. During the retrograde period there will be a tendency to reflect on these issues in your life. Many will feel they need to stop their forward movement in some area of life or some project. They may feel they need to look at other options or to make sure they have chosen the right course of action before moving forward. Also during Mars Retrograde, which happens approximately every two years, some may look over their anger issues, or issues of aggression that have been perpetrated against them. It may also be wise for some to get in touch with what self-empowerment means for them. Have you been too nice and a doormat. Have you been too aggressive or self-assertive? Mars Retrograde also helps us to get in touch with what we really want in our lives, not merely what we are supposed to do. People from the past may come back into your life or seriously back into your memory during this retrograde, so you can better understand and navigate these Mars issues. The Universe will bring you exactly what you need in order to deal with your Mars issues during this time period. After Mars goes back direct again in April, you will be clearer about what direction you want to take and what you really want in your life. Since Mars is in Virgo during this time period, there may be themes about fixing things, putting things in order, simplifying your life, and being of service. Neptune moves into Pisces in early February and will stay there until 2025. This is an important passage for Neptune as Pisces is its favorite sign to be in. This will be a quite deep and subtle energetic shift into the mystical realms, the unseen soul of life, sensitivity, compassion, and surrender. We all will be seduced into letting go to the flow of life and trusting the Soul and inner dimension more.

The 2012 Shift Eat Clean by Holly Noonan, CHHS, CELC
W
e are on the cusp of a new era of consciousness on the planet. The whole hubbub about 2012 is about this shift. It’s a transition from masculine to feminine consciousness, meaning those humans (men or women) who resonate with the earth’s unfolding creative, dynamic, careening, ever-changing life force, will be better prepared for a future that holds a tremendous amount of change in the next 50 years. A major determining factor on whether you will be one of the clear-minded, flexible, sensitive creatures who rides the universal flow or one of the clampeddown, stuck, recalcitrant, comfort-seekers is…. of course…. The Food You Eat.
Wherever you live you are an
expression
In one single week last month, I had four people who didn’t know each other mention to me the healing power of ley lines and vortices. (This is something like feng shui or acupuncture for the planet—Camden, Maine, where I live, happens to lie in a vortex of energy, much like the ones in Taos, New Mexico, Sedona, Arizona or Findhorn in Scotland). Apparently the people who live in such magical places are the beneficiaries of some form of earth energy that amplifies and vitalizes all growth and development.
of the earth's energy...
I know a group of artists who moved here expressly for this reason. Almost everyone I talk to–from bankers to massage therapists–seems to know that this is true here, without knowing why. The vitality, creativity and healing energy are that self-evident. When you spend time here, you come to marvel at the number of world travelers, artists, healers and metaphysical practitioners who have settled here. You also come to marvel at how you can drive 30 minutes inland and it’s not there. An hour south, nope. 40 minutes north… nope. There are edges to this vortex of energy. You can tell from the storefronts and the people and the food. It just feels different. Food is dangerously crappy everywhere you go in America (and now in many other countries too.) Devitalized, processed food is available to everyone here and in many places in the country, there’s no alternative. People are raised on extremely nutrient-deficient food and they never even see someone who eats a different kind of food. Certainly that happens here too. But there’s a choice of food culture here. Many of my friends haven’t owned televisions for years. (A regular TV habit is a very solid predictor for eating processed food.) Most everyone I know cooks his or her own food most of the time. A fair few friends shop regularly at Farmer’s Markets and natural food stores. This culture honors farmers. Artists and healers are particularly sensitive human beings, by nature. Fact: If you eat processed food, you injure your sensitivity. You close it down. It follows, then, that to truly be prepared for the shift that is happening around us, we must eat clean food. We must get right with ourselves and connect with our
“We are disturbed — we can’t play anymore. Our planet can be renewed or ravaged. Now is the time to awaken and take action. Everyone is needed. You are not here for no reason. Everyone who is here now has an important purpose. This is a hard but a special time. We have the opportunity for growth, but we must be ready for this moment in history.” “Meditation and spiritual practice are good, but also action. It’s very important to be clear about who you are, and also about your relation to the Earth. Develop yourself according to your own tradition and the call of your heart. But remember to respect differences, and strive for unity.
“Eat wisely – a lot of food is corrupt in either subtle or gross ways. Pay attention to what you are taking into your body. Learn to preserve food, and to conserve energy. Learn some good breathing techniques, so you have mastery of your breath. Be clear. Follow a tradition with great roots. It is not important what tradition, your heart will tell you, but it must have great roots.” “We live in a world of energy. An important task at this time is to learn to sense or see the energy of everyone and everything — people, plants, and animals. Go to the sacred places of the Earth to pray for peace, and have respect for the Earth that gives us our food, clothing, and shelter. We need to reactivate the energy of these sacred places. That is our work.” Wherever you live, you are an expression of the earth’s energy, a dynamic conductor of life force. Or not. Kind of depends on how many Hot Pockets you have in a week. (Wink) Taking steps (even baby steps) towards clearing out your pantry and your life of “black hole” food (that which sucks your energy into an abyss) is taking steps towards a new future where your life and your body are part of the solution that the planet conjures up for itself. Wouldn’t that be nice – to be a dynamic conductor of the solution – the healing of the planet and all her inhabitants? Yes, please. Supersize THAT.

I have noticed both a decline and a crescendo of human consciousness in America. (Have you?) The prime-time network TV shows seem to be getting more crass, more violent or vulgar and yet… the artists and visionaries and healers I know are galloping over their life-hurdles at an apparently accelerating rate. The environmental and political news gets ever bleaker from around the world, and yet quantum physicists are agreeing with the Dalai Lama. (And Einstein might have too.)
environment. We must support our farmers and acknowledge their crucial role in delivering to us the vital life force of the earth, so that we can participate in the earth’s evolution. The Mayan calendar is the one that ends on December 21, 2012. Carlos Barrios, Mayan elder and Ajq’ij (is a ceremonial priest and spiritual guide) of the Eagle Clan studied with many teachers and interviewed nearly 600 traditional Mayan elders. This is what he has to say: “At sunrise on December 21, 2012 for the first time in 26,000 years the Sun rises to conjunct the intersection of the Milky Way and the plane of the ecliptic. Some observers say this alignment with the heart of the galaxy in 2012 will open a channel for cosmic energy to flow through the Earth, cleansing it and all that dwells upon it, raising all to a higher level of vibration.” “This process has already begun. Change is accelerating now and it will continue to accelerate. We need to take care of the Earth that feeds and shelters us.”

Living In Shift Guided By Your Own by Teresa Piccari
True North And A Dress
Ken Foster
A
Cyan Magenta Yellow Black
girlhood friend called me several years ago to share a beautiful compliment bestowed on her by a stranger as she walked down the street one spring day in a simple sundress. As she strode close to a man, he beamed at her with genuine admiration and said, “Girrrl, you are wearing that dress.” She smiled her thanks at him for this was not in any way the type of unwelcome comment that is sometimes offered as one passes by say, a construction site. What the stranger saw clearly reflected in my friend that day, was not just an attractive woman in a nice dress. He saw a confident person, who knew who she was and owned it – through her walk, her demeanor and yes, the choice of a nice dress that suited her and she felt comfortable wearing. All of this was silently, yet very effectively, communicated to the stranger as she approached. Over time, I have borrowed this phrase and shared it with my clients and students. It has become a metaphor used to acknowledge when someone’s work, both women and men, has reached a high level. (Even though a dress is a feminine garment, most men will understand the unilateral implications of the metaphor.) When they have successfully navigated past creative breakdown into breakthrough and hit their stride – come into their writer’s voice, reclaimed their sense of essence through story or owned their personal power via creative expression. It has occurred to me that all we really need for the journey through 2012 and beyond is our sense of True North and a really great dress. Life on a Banana Peel As we navigate our life path during this time of immense transition we may sometimes feel as if we don’t know which way is up. Our lives and the world around us continue to speed up and shift, requiring us to diligently re-calibrate our old selves and bring our best selves into alignment with the truth that is emerging within and around us in this new frontier. As a fellow Oneness Blessing Giver reminded me the other day, “Only truth can live in the light.” Recently, when asked by my spiritual teacher how I was doing, I replied, “Oh, I’m on a banana peel.” Luckily, I knew enough to know I was on a banana peel and like they say, that awareness is often the first step in turning things around. I used the banana peel to surf the uncertain waters around me. It allowed me to see where I was, in relation to where I wanted to be. It became clearer and clearer what needed to be adjusted to get to my destination. I also knew a banana peel should not be my vehicle of choice. Oh Yeah… And that’s when I thought about my dad. I could hear his voice when he was teaching me how to drive. “Are you driving the car or is the car driving you?” he would ask when he sensed a tentativeness in my handling of the vehicle. He recanted the time he was transporting a backhoe from his construction company on a tractor-trailer along Philadelphia’s Schuylkill Expressway. Just outside of the city limits, he realized the brakes on his truck were failing. He opted to exit at Gladwyne and then had to bring the whole rig to a safe halt after negotiating some hairy curves. He explained the actions he had to take to maneuver to a safe stop, without hitting any other vehicles or tipping the whole load over. Aside from the mechanics of it all, there was, he explained, the more important sense of absolute conviction that he could do what needed to be done to bring the situation to a safe resolution. A similar scenario repeated in his life when he needed to make an emergency landing of his plane. The gods were smiling on him, as he was piloting a float plane. But he still needed to find a suitable body of water to put it down in and fast. And he did, he told me, by focusing and being totally in the moment - confident in his ability to do what needed to be done. He knew he could be in charge of putting the plane down, not the plane putting itself down. All of his skills, beliefs, talents and life experiences coalesced for him in those moments, giving him the capability to make good decisions and take appropriate action. He held to his True North and as a result, arrived safely at his unplanned destinations.
22 Inner Tapestry February/March 2012
Finding your True North True North varies from person to person. For me, I must bow to emotional clarity. Chetan Parkyn, author of Human Design, helped me to understand what he refers to as authority, or my personal decision-making process. I have learned I must wait for emotional seas to lay down and I have absolute clarity before I make a decision. I must feel my way in this world because that is how I am designed. The seas around me may be heavy in turmoil but I must reach the still point within my being – to be the calm within the storm – when I take action. Too often, I try to think my way and that only leads to frustration and premature decisions and reversals, because ultimately, my feelings rule. Years ago a friend and very talented palm reader, looked at my hand and saw it there plain as day and admonished me, “Teresa, you can’t think your emotions.” So I have come to embrace my feelings as the gold mine they are for me, both personally and as a writer. In Human Design, Parkyn writes: "How you behave, especially under pressure is dependent on a sliding scale of self-worth… Individual expression, aligned with what you know to be right and true, brings integrity." Testing Your GPS System Any equipment must be tested from time to time to ensure that it is working properly. Sometimes these tests are expected and other times, they blind-side us. As my deadline for this column approached the Universe presented me with an excruciating and spectacular trio of scenarios that tested my mettle, all within a half hours time. An entrepreneur for whom I had done a great job, appeared blind to the positive impact I had on his business. I will never know the exact details of what or who clouded his vision, but he did not have the clarity to see beyond petty issues to the truth. A rude service person loudly confronted me over a tip she forgot she had already collected. And finally, a new friend whose harshness and penchant for creating drama played out one too many times. It was a tour de force that literally, at moments, left me breathless. Yet in those thirty trying minutes I stayed present in the moment. I was witness to the drama and provocation clamoring before me. Somehow, I remained in my center and was able to take care of myself. In the first and most emotionally challenging instance, I faltered and got caught up in the turmoil myself at moments, but my sense of True North rose up and showed me the way through and out. When it was all over, I mourned the losses and the havoc that was wrought. However, I was grateful for an immediate sense of knowing that all my spiritual practice and tools had brought me through these trials. The Universe had given me three strong wake up calls and I responded. I looked down and realized I was not standing on a banana peel at all but on terra firma. It was not the prettiest of landings but I was able to walk away. And then, I remembered something. How many times when I was growing up had I asked my father for his opinion about a clothing choice and heard him reply, “Who’s going to wear it?” That’s right, who is going to wear the blouse, the pants – who is going to wear the dress? Me! So as 2012 unfurls and glistens before you, remember to travel lightly with your own True North as your compass, tucked discretely into the pocket of your best dress ever – a one-of-a-kind piece of haute couture co-created just for you. © 2012 Teresa Piccari Teresa Piccari is a writer, teacher and creativity coach living in coastal Maine. I wrote a Resolution Keepers Journal a couple of years ago thinking that a multitude of people would come to my seminars. It was scheduled to begin the 2nd of January—a perfect time to have resolutions made or so I thought. Long story short, no one came to that first seminar… or any of the following ones for that matter. My heart and dream shattered. After those few weeks of no-shows, and a few days of licking my wounds, I asked my husband, “What did I do wrong?” and he responded, “It’s hard for people to make changes. It’s not you.” I am still determined to write a book that will serve humankind. I’ve dreamed of writing and illustrating my own books for years, but for practical reasons I went to work in a school system and stayed there for financial security reasons… this idea is a fallacy. There is no financial security apart from God, our Source. Unless you are heart and soul passionate about what you are doing, you are bound to fail. I continued to paint and write articles through the years and have detected a trend in my work toward being categorized as inspirational. My self-help door emphatically closed. There came a glimmer through a window. New hope glowed in my heart… maybe this is the way for me. My juices began flowing again. In January, I cleared out all my old journals—gleaning only the inspirational moments and quotes that inspired me. I went from a bookcase full of 40 or so journals to one binder. It felt refreshing to let go of all my previous beliefs about what is possible in a lifetime. Writing energizes me, connects me to my inner inspiration and stimulates me to make bridges where none existed previously. One small step with a huge amount of courage is what it took to submit my writing for publication. My wildest dream is becoming a possibility. My novel idea suddenly seems more attainable when I focus on what I need to do today to move toward it. I had been limiting myself by staying hell bent on writing self-help books. Setting myself free has opened more doors of opportunity for me. God has a personal calling that’s unique for each of us and the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others. Allow the energy of the universe to lead you. The key to realizing a dream is to focus on it’s significance and not your success, then even the small steps and victories take on greater meaning. The German philosopher, Oswald Spengler states, “Our purpose is to make as meaningful as possible this life that has been bestowed upon us… to live in such a way that we may be proud of ourselves, and act in such a way that some part of us lives on.” Kicking around in the back of your mind is a brilliant idea that with nourishment could grow into an enormous dream. It’s time to take it out of storage, dust it off and begin doing what you can to make it come true.
Acting upon our dreams is what makes them come true. It takes conviction, faith and commitment. Whether it’s been art, books, design, fashion or movies, each one of these things grew out of a dreamer pushing the limits of possibilities. It’s time we celebrate our own creativity and the powers of wishful thinking. Ideas and hunches can come at any time. The first step is to surrender to what is possible and then accept it as your calling. Accepting these flickers of thought can awaken you to a kind of ubiquitous, benevolent magical river of enchantment that perpetually flows toward your destiny. My wildly improbable goals have led me to nurture my spirit. I’ve had to pay attention to my real needs, treat myself kindly and stand up for myself and my dreams no matter what anyone else says. A run down body cannot accept or support the development of the creative life you were meant to have. Wildly improbable goals are nothing you could think up, it seems to come from some place outside and beyond you. You may experience a physical jolt of yearning as your heart strains toward its destiny. Write down your dream in detail before you lose your nerve. Writing primes your mind to scan the environment for opportunities that lead to your objectives. Many choices you make that lead you toward your dream will be so inconspicuous you won’t even realize it, but in time they will add up to huge changes in direction. We need a huge reservoir of mojo to keep slogging through the mire of work needed to realize our wildly improbable dream. Once written down, and some actions taken, then miracles happen. Prepare a safe place for your true self and ask questions about your needs and accept the answers to guide you home to a greater connection, peace, and happiness. We don’t have to be defined by the circumstances we find ourselves in. Our lives are filled with far more potential than we imagine. At anytime, we can step out of the box of limitations we’ve put on our lives and create a new beginning. When we open ourselves to our dreams and become aware of all our experiences, our heart leads the way through chaos and rocky emotions until we learn to be kinder to ourselves when we fail or come up against obstacles. Strong faith is needed to accomplish our goals. It’s the passion to push on—go through any obstacles that’s in the way. We need to have faith in our huge capacity to love and make our world a better place. And so it begins for me with one article and one painting being published. I press forward continually seeking ways to improve this string of words. Challenging myself in a pursuit of excellence even in my paintings. Where is my fullest potential? To get to the end of my life and have no regrets—to have lived with joy, peace and a clear conscious is my life goal. To evolve into the complete person I was intended to become. The truth is that no matter how much you plan, dream and move forward in your life, you must remember you are always acting in conjunction with the flow and energy of the universe. You propel yourself in the direction of your goal with all the passion and verve you can muster, then let go, allowing your dream to unfold into its own.

The Mandaean Religion of Iraq by James Bean
A
Mandean woman, known in Arabic as Sabian, reads from a religious book, as they mark the "great feast" or the Mandaean new year, according to the Sabian calendar in Baghdad, on July 19, 2010, as Iraq’s 5000-strong sect practice their Gnostic religion along the banks of the Tigris River. The Sabians were driven out of Jordan and settled in southern and central Iraq around AD 67. They speak a distinct language, Mandean, and their religious books are written in Sabian script. (Photo courtesy of Getty Images.) The story of the Mandaeans (Man-day-yens) somewhat resembles the experience of Native American tribes; may they survive; may their ancient wisdom be shared with humanity.

In the 1970's, professor Kurt Rudolph wrote his definitive book on the nature and history of the Gnostic religion called, Gnosis. In the chapter titled, "A Relic: the Mandaeans," he recorded that at the time there were only about 15,000 Mandaeans left and the number of Mandaean priests were rapidly dwindling. He described them as a community in somewhat of a state of crisis not only due to a shortage of priests but also because of the growing spiritual and cultural gap between the elders (who are the keepers of the ancient Knowledge) and the younger generations of Mandaean laity. Kurt Rudolph wrote, "The continued existence of the community will essentially depend on whether or not it succeeds in solving the problem of a necessary adaptation to the modern world. Only in this way will the oldest Gnostic religion, with its two millennia of history in which it developed its independent Aramaic idiom and lifestyle as did no other Gnostic sect of the past, be able to survive in the future." (Gnosis, Harper Collins) And those words were written long before the rise of Saddam Hussein, the Gulf War, and the current madness that has cursed that region for many years. Some Mandaeans (literally, "possessors of secret Knowledge") live in Iraqi cities like Baghdad and Basra. There›s a large Mandaean population that resides in smaller market towns and villages of the marshland in southern Iraq, and near the Euphrates and Tigris rivers. Iran also has a Mandaean population; many of them dwell along the river Karun in Rhuzistan province. The Prophet Mohammed called them "Sabians," i.e. "Baptists or baptizers," a name which occurs in the Quran and which enabled them to continue under Islam. Islam also categorized them as "a people of the book," a religion that possesses their own ancient scriptures. Another factor that has traditionally enabled them to operate in the Islamic world is their affiliation with John the Baptist. John the Baptist is one of their greatest prophets. Though the historic connection between John and the Mandaeans is hard to verify, it is indeed possible they are descendants of disciples of John the Baptist, who 2,000 years ago had a large number of followers which believed him to be a great Master if not the awaited Messiah. After John's death, the New Testament portrays Jesus as being the spiritual successor, but other leaders in John's community might have seen things differently. Like Jesus, others might also have claimed to be John's successor and thus would have become the leaders of a John-community that maintained its independence from the Jesus Movement, instead remaining what they were — an unorthodox baptismal sect of the Trans-Jordan. According to scholars of Mandaean studies like Werner Foerster, indeed the origins of the Mandaeans do go back to the Jewish tradition of first century AD Palestine and the region of the Jordan River. Foerster states in Gnosis II, published by Oxford University Press, that in the context of the Jewish war of independence and the consolidation of Orthodox Judaism after AD 70, "its position as a minority opposition evidently led to the persecution of the community and finally to its emigration from its native Jordan territory to the east, to begin with in Harran and the median hill country, then in the southern regions of Mesopotamia." Eventually the community settled in the region of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, where they could continue the ritual of baptizing initiates in "living waters" (rivers) symbolizing the connecting of their souls with "heavenly Jordan rivers of Light."
Familiar-Sounding New Testament-Ish Or Jesus-Like Sayings This ancient religious community, also known as the Nazoreans, still uses 24 Inner Tapestry February/March 2012
a dialect of the Aramaic language; they possess a huge quantity of wonderful scriptures, mostly in the form of psalms or hymns. Before I begin a study of some visionary writings in the Mandaean scriptures, I want to share some examples of passages that sound somewhat "familiar" to our ears – New Testament or Jesus-like passages. These would be words spoken by those who came from the same Aramaic-speaking Semitic milieu, as did Jesus and other Messiahs of the Middle East: "I am a shepherd who loves his sheep; I protect the sheep and the lambs... I carry them and give them water to drink from the hollow of my hand until they have drunk their fill." "A fisherman am I, who am the elect among the fisherman, the chief of all the fish-catchers." "Give bread, water and shelter to the poor and persecuted people who suffer persecution." "Love and support one another." "When you see anyone who is hungry, then satisfy his hunger. When you see anyone who is thirsty, then give him to drink, for whosoever gives, receives." "Whoever releases a prisoner will find a Messenger of Life advancing to meet him." "My chosen! Do not put your trust in the kings, rulers, and rebels of this world, nor in military forces, arms, conflict, and the hosts which they assemble, nor in silver and gold... their gold and their silver will not save them. Their authority passes away and comes to an end." The words "seek and you will find" appear on numerous occasions in the Mandaean scriptures as well, in fact, much more often than in the New Testament. And, the term "Place of Life," often used in the Mandaean texts, also appears in the Gospel of Thomas.
The First Wave Of Gnosis
There was some kind of transformation in thinking that took place 2,000 years ago in the middle east which lead to the birth of scores of new religious movements both within and outside of Judaism, including the Sethians, the Essenes, and various forms and expressions of Christianity. Many of these are categorized as "Gnostic," meaning they focused upon spiritual/mystical Knowledge. This was the time of the first wave of Gnosis in the western world – the spark was lit. Some souls started to believe that it was possible for them personally to know the Mysteries of God and the Heavens, and they sought spiritual wisdom and guidance from various masters, mystics, prophets and apostles that were around at that time. For the Nazoreans (Mandaeans), John the Baptist was God's Teacher who had been sent "from the Light" to baptize or initiate souls into the experience of the Knowledge of Life, the "Great Life," a Name for God in the Mandaean scriptures. There are some examples of visionary literature in the Dead Sea Scrolls, various descriptions of things going on in the heavens. The Mandaean texts seem to be a continuation of that visionary tradition of Light-mysticism and Ascension-mysticism.

What is somatic therapy?
Somatic therapy is a self-awareness process with a particular focus on the body. With guided practice to help you remain present in the body, you simply allow thoughts, emotions and sensations to emerge in their natural patterns. This combination – conscious awareness and observation of patterns – allows both increased capability of self-regulation and expanded capacity for awareness itself. Current brain research shows that the part of the brain involved in awareness also regulates emotions and behavior. So practice Douglas Smith of focused awareness actually strengthens and expands the brain cell connections in this area, making the benefit of this work cumulative. The difference between this and mindfulness practice alone is that you also have access to somatic, or body reactions. These come under conscious awareness, creating the possibility of physical as well as emotional healing. Somatic therapy is useful for the resolution of stress and trauma, anxiety, depression, habits, addictions, "stuck" patterns, or can be used to enhance personal growth. For an appointment or more information please call, email or visit me on the web at www.mindmeetsbody.com. SHAWN HIGGINS, DO provides a holistic approach to healing. She provides
an individualized, hands-on treatment of the whole body. Osteopathic Medicine appreciates the mental, physical & spiritual aspects of each person and works to encourage balance and harmony among these elements. She recognizes that the body is inherently capable of healing itself. When given self-acceptance, self love, healthy whole foods, clean drinking water, fresh air, sunlight, exercise, and an overall sense of wellbeing & happiness, our bodies are naturally equipped to handle any imbalance or dis-ease. Our bodies tell us that an imbalance is present by expressing symptoms. Symptoms are expressions of health and let us know that our bodies are already working to restore balance. We must pay attention to symptoms without suppressing them. Patients are evaluated with great consideration of the important relationship between body structure & function. Dr. Higgins utilizes a variety of techniques to support the self-healing mechanism within each patient. Her osteopathic and cranial treatments allow for the release of strains and restoration of blood, lymphatic, and energy flow. She utilizes nutrition therapy to aid the body in reaching its full physiologic potential. As a Certified Reiki Master, Dr. Higgins also performs energy healings. Her treatments are unique in that she often combines osteopathic and energy healings into the same treatment. Spiritual guidance is also given when appropriate. Jen Deraspe, MS
Certified Coach; The Institute for The Work, Holistic Personal Trainer, Retreat Facilitator I spent my life searching for truth and happiness outside of myself. All served me on the path, and I am
grateful. Because my seeking path was more external, I experienced only temporary relief. What ultimately led me home was the simplest of methods, The Work of Byron Katie. It is a direct, no non-sense path to personal truth, clarity and freedom held within and no teacher is required. I have been humbled and opened through my own personal inquiry into the source of my stress, fear and internal war with what is. If you are seeking sustained peace and to experience lasting wellbeing, you are invited to join me on an invigorating journey back to you. The tools used are customized for your individual plan and include The Work, Hatha yoga, meditation, holistic nutrition, lifetime fitness and wellness programming. It would be a privilege to be your guide, be it in person, by phone or webcam/Skype. I am happy to offer a complimentary phone consultation if you are interested in the possibility of working together. www.ntnretreats.com, (207) 595-8260, HolisticCoachJen@gmail.com.

Continued from page 18 ~ Perspectives from the Sky
The New Moons in February/March, new moons always a time for starts, new beginnings and initiations are as follows: February 21 in Pisces, a time to begin connecting more deeply to your feelings and empathy; and March 22 in Aries. This Aries New Moon flows close behind the Spring Equinox on March 20. So it is great time to begin to shake off the cobwebs of winter and get your motor for life running again. The Full Moons, a good time to feel the magic and to bring things to climax are February 7 in Leo, and a Full Moon on March 8 in Virgo. The first one in Leo is about personal egos and social consciousness. And the second one in Virgo is about surrender of self to greater service. Another notable event is Mercury Retrograde on March 12, which will last until April 4. Many people think of Mercury Retrograde in superstitious ways, which is not appropriate. In reality, Mercury Retrograde is a time when our usual ways of perceiving and communicating change. We are often during Mercury Retrograde taken into a kind of twilight zone reality, as we are having our thinking mechanism adjusted. It is a good time to let go of trying too hard to use logic and left-brain thinking, and instead it is a good time to reflect and rewind and to use one’s creative, imaginative, and intuitive thinking more. Because we are changing our perceptions during Mercury Retrograde, and not thinking in our usual manner, it is sometimes advised that we not make major decisions or sign important contracts.
32 Inner Tapestry February/March 2012
Yet sometimes it is just natural for us to do so, as that is what we have been naturally presented with. In those cases, it is wise to take extra time and to use your spiritual connections to assist you in the decision. People from one’s past often come back in the flesh or in one’s dreams or memories during Mercury Retrograde. This is because one needs to process some issues that are connected to that person. After Mercury goes direct issues gain more clarity as the fog begins to lift. And of course the Spring Equinox is on March 20th at 1:14 AM here on the east coast. In the next issue we will discuss the important eclipses that will burst into our lives and bring big change in May and June 2012.

37 Continued from page 24 ~ exploring the world religions ~ Ode to the Unknown God In my view the Mandaean scriptures probably represent the most heavenly or otherworldly documents of the west, brimming with out-of-this-world visions of God, descriptions of the heavens, souls, angels, and life after death. They speak directly to both the heart and soul of the reader through hymns and prayers of incredible beauty.
The Coming Of The Messenger Of Light
The role of the Heavenly Messenger is to give the mystic experience of light to souls and eventually guide them back up to the Place of Light, the Mandaean term for the highest heaven where the Great Life (God) resides. Here are a couple of passages from Mandaean holy books on Manda-d-Hiya – the great heavenly redeemer: The Illuminator of the Worlds of Light In The Name Of The Great Life, Sublime Light Be Praised
"Life supported life, Life found its own. Its own self did Life find, and my soul found that for which it had looked. Renowned is Life and victorious." (Canonical Prayerbook)
"I came and found the truthful and believing hearts. When I was not dwelling among them, yet my Name was on their lips. I took them and guided them up to the World of Light."
Visions Of The Great Life In The Place Of The Light
"They are a thousand thousand miles distant from one another and yet one is illumined by the other's Radiance." The primary name for the highest God in the Mandaean tradition is "The Great Life." Many of the hymns in the Canonical Prayerbook begin with this invocation: "In the Name of the Great Life, Sublime Light be Praised."
Embraced By The Light
The mystical encounters recorded in the scriptures of the Mandaeans may seem at times like ancient near-death experiences (NDE's), the visions of souls who were embraced the Light long ago: "When I arrived at the water-brooks, a discharge of Radiance met me. It took me by the palm of my right hand and brought me over the streams of death. Radiance was brought and I was clothed in it. Light was brought and I was wrapped in it..."
"He is the Light, in Whom is no darkness, the Living One, in Whom is no death, the Good One, in Whom is no malice, the Gentle One, in Whom is no confusion, the Kind One, in whom is no venom of bitterness." (Gnosis II) The term "Great Spirit" is also used on several occasions in the Mandaean scriptures. James Bean interviews guests, reviews books and music for HealthyLife.Net Positive Talk Radio and other stations via a syndicated radio program called Spiritual Awakening, and teaches Sant Mat Meditation and Surat Shabd Yoga in the Bangor, Waterville, & Portland areas. Address questions or comments to James@SpiritualAwakeningRadio.com, (207) 358-9381.
"[Prayer] Son of the Good Ones, show me the way of the divine beings (spirits, angels) and the ascent upon which your father rose up to the Place of Light." "He [the discharge of Radiance] rose and took me with him

"Living One," a term found in the Gospel of Thomas and in eastern Gnostic writings, is used in Mandaean texts for God. The Great Life is also referred to as the King of Light, a limitless Radiant Being of compassion and love:

Souls in the Place of the Light are described as luminous beings living in a world of infinite Light with a Supreme Being of Light. The heavens of hyperspace are traversed by spiritual streams of "Living Waters," tributaries of the Heavenly Jordan river of Light. And souls are described as radiant beings that shine upon each other like stars do in the center of our galaxy:
"I became the Illuminator of the Worlds of Light. I became a king to the Nazoreans, who receive praise and stability through my Name. And by my Name they ascend to the Place of the Light. As for the elect righteous who put me on as a garment, their eyes were filled with Light, and Manda-d-Hiya [Knowledge of Life] was established in their hearts."
$12 per issue for 30 words, additional words are 50 cents each.
This is my interpretation. In the above account, after this soul crossed over to the other side, it was met by a "discharge of Radiance," (according to another translation) a deliverer or guide who not only escorted the soul into the beyond, but also gave the soul its heavenly robe of Radiance – a garment made of Light. It's unclear to me if the soul literally was given a robe to put on, or if perhaps this is another way of describing the process of leaving the body at death, taking off the robe of the physical body, which caused the soul to see itself as a being of Light. In any event, the soul then prays for its helper and guide to be escorted upward to the Place of Light. In another version of this account it says: "I lifted mine eyes to heaven and my soul waited on the House of Life. And the Life (God) who heard my cry sent toward me a deliverer." This version also describes the encounter with the heavenly being (discharge of Radiance) who escorted the soul over the waters of death, and accompanied it during the ascension up to the Light-world. The hymn concludes with these words:
"From the Place of Light I came forth, from you, Bright Habitation. I come to touch hearts, to measure and try all minds, to see in whose heart I dwell. Whoever thinks of me, of him I think; whoever calls my Name, his name I will call. Whosoever prays my prayer from the earth, his prayer I will offer from the Place of Light."

Three years ago, when I took my first steps on the road to a writer’s life, I read all the books I was “supposed to read” but two books really got my muse dancing across the page: A Writer’s Book of Days and Writing Alone, Writing Together, both by Judy Reeves. The latter helped me create The Writer’s Circle, a writer’s support and critique group in Central Connecticut. The former book, helped me establish the discipline necessary to write everyday, which is any writer’s biggest hurdle but can be especially insurmountable for writers, like myself, who have young children. So, I was thrilled when a review copy of the updated edition of A Writer’s Book of Days appeared in my mailbox. Full of irresistible new prompts, Web resources and inspirational quotes from writers across the ages, this book is perfect for writers of all genres and every level of experience. The chapters are broken-up by Reeves’s Ten Guidelines as well as the months of the year, but feel free to skip around to topics that are important to you on any day. Feeling blocked? Maybe you’re being too judgmental. Open chapter three and ask yourself some penetrating questions about how you view your own work or if perfectionism is getting in your way. If you are putting in the time and energy (translation: discipline) for a writing practice but don’t feel you are making progress, chapter six helps you examine your expectations and learn what to let go of and what to hold onto. Reeves knows how to help a writer get past the dreaded internal editor so that you get more words on the page in any given writing practice session. Another wonderful way to use this book is for daily writing practice. Simply locate the current date in the book, write the prompt for the day at the top of a blank page and start writing about the first image that pops into your mind. With
the emergence of new technologies that make writing possible anywhere and everywhere, Reeves still advises writers (especially new writers) to let the ink flow. Reeves advises, “writing is a physical act and should be done with the body.” I have to agree; when I’m feeling blocked the first thing I do is turn off the computer. The writing muscles, she teaches, “are the hand and the heart,” and nothing works those muscles like the movement of a pen across a page. One of my (many) favorite prompts in this book was “write about saying good-bye.” Immediately, I wrote this line: “Some good-byes just can’t be forgotten.” I’m working this line into a piece (an essay, a short story—who knows!) about the tender moment when, at age 16, I realized I was in love but had to say good-bye, instead of I love you, to the boy who was the object of my affection. Other topics include: Ten Daily Habits that make a good writer. How to translate real life into fiction. Tips for locating writer’s resources on the Web. How to crate your own supportive writing community. Writing better with stronger verbs and fewer adverbs. Throughout the year, you’ll come to count on A Writer’s book of Days for guidance, wisdom, motivation and myriad great ideas.

Falling Into Grace by: Adyashanti ISBN: 978-1-60407-087-3 Publisher: Sounds True
Falling Into Grace by Adyashanti describes what it means to live a “full” life, in every sense of the word. It provides guidelines to step into a profound way of being. This book begins with a discussion of the images that we use to limit ourselves and others, which stem from the idea that we are all fundamentally different and separate from other people. This is a thought that is formed at an early age, evidenced by the way that toddlers have a hard time sharing toys. These images are incredibly restrictive, since each one of us is ultimately a unique mystery that is breathtaking in its potential. If we make the choice to embark on the journey to self knowledge, the author writes that it eventually becomes clear to us that we are in fact intimately connected to others. This journey to knowing yourself, ironically enough, involves letting go of our sense of self and ideas we have about the way our lives should be. Before we get to that point, it is useful to explore the ways in which we suffer.

Adyashanti suggests that behind every emotion, whether it’s complete joy or utter despair, there is a sense of stillness that has always been there. He wants each of us to release our past, because our memories and the stories surrounding them have nothing to do with the potential of the present moment. When we can finally let go of our stories and our constant judgments that we impose on life, we can enter into a different relationship with ourselves and the world around us. Of course, to experience this new way of being, this “awake spirit” as he calls it, we must surrender to life and embrace it. He writes, “Any time you argue with what was, what is or what will be, you limit your ability to experience the vastness of who you are.” This book eloquently touches on the almost inexplicable nature of the human experience – the incredible stillness that is present in every moment, if we allow it to be. He does not pretend that this journey is an easy one, but gives us hope that the end result is worth every moment of pain. “If you’re very, very quiet and you open your senses all at once, you just might be taken. You just might be taken by a moment of grace and fall into a sense of what it really feels like when life is not separate from you, when life is not other than you, when life is actually an expression of something indefinable, mysterious, and immense.” What else is there?

He says that three behaviors cause our suffering: trying to control our environment, making demands of life, and rejecting “what is” at any given moment. We do this primarily because our mind is constantly analyzing and imposing judgments on everything around us. This suffering is also connected to our ideas of separateness because we feel that our experience is totally unique, and that it should look and feel a certain way. Adyashanti invites us to look deeply into what our mind is telling us about any given moment, versus the reality of the situation. He explains that in this moment right now, if you’re feeling terrified of something, or incredibly hurt by another person, the only thing that is causing you to suffer is your mental judgment of the situation. A feeling is just a
feeling; it’s impersonal. Our “egoic consciousness,” which establishes our sense of self, is the only thing that makes those feelings unbearable. He shows us that it is possible to be in crippling pain and not suffer, simply by complete acceptance of whatever is going on. He writes, “When you stop thinking, all there is, is now.”

uwe gronau
Time Rider and MidSummer I was gifted this past year with the opportunity to become familiar with the music of German Composer, Uwe Gronau. I was gifted the 2 CD set MidSummer, which should be, by all means, be worn out due to the number of times it has been played. The first time I heard this music, I was looking out over the lake where we live and I started to cry—this CD so touched my heart. The first CD's tempo is quick and uplifting. The second CD pierces the veil of emotion and feeling to a place of total love and expanse, bringing the listener into a realm, that in daily life, we often do not let ourselves experience. This CD set is based on the ideas of Ludwig Wittgenstein, who studied the relationship between reality and thought. Uwe explains: "is that when language gets to a border and can go no further, music can give you a new perspective."
This CD set has become one of the most played new age albums of and went to number three on the monthly International Zone Music Reporter Top 100 airplay chart. Mostly instrumental, there are two vocal tracks giving the listener a taste of what is to come.
2011
What is to come, has arrived. Uwe's newest CD's Time Rider is now available. It has expanded the vocal tunes and has eight tracks to compliment a dozen instrumental ones. Time Rider says Uwe; "It has waves of moods, like the cycle of seasons." You will experience the waves of time within your past and future activating your imagination in soulful meditation. Expressed by Uwe; "I wanted to make the point how limitless, complete and divine 'time' can be for us as a source of inspiration, imagination and relaxation." Thanks to The Creative Service Company for their sharing of this wonder-filled healing sound experience.
