time as I call it, I’m often asked how we do it all? My commit is always “It’s my Labor of Love”. In my role as publisher of Heartland LIVING, I’m very blessed with incredible opportunities to attend amazing photo shoots and some magical events. Although not every part of my journey is magical especially as I sit here at my desk at 5am, on the day we go to press, writing my publisher’s note because there isn’t enough time in the day, I’m very thankful that God chose this journey in life for me and I can share it with you through my experiences. Now as you plan your summer, make sure you find a quiet place and enjoy this issue or pack us in your beach bag and take it with you. All to often we get that amazing business idea which could open the door to a life of our dreams but most of the time we just dismiss it as a passing thought. What we don’t realize is there is a flourishing list of successful entrepreneurs like our feature story of Tierney Willis Perkins and Leslie Welles-Hale, who followed their dreams and never looked back. Tierney shared this with me at our photo shoot but I won’t spoil the rest of the story: “ If we had thrown in the towel when things didn't go exactly as planned, we would have missed out on everything Wild Bleu is today - a store front, a brand, a leather line and even a mobile boutique.” Heartland LIVING is honored to announce the City of Okeechobee’s 100th Birthday to all of the Heartland area. I’m sure you will agree that this is a great milestone for this unique and exemplary rural city, one that prides itself on family values and the strength of its community. You will find a tribute to their celebration, along with some wonderful historic photographs. Love is in the air in our June | July Issue and we present to you again our Special Wedding section, showcasing a true “Southern Love Story” with our Heartland couple Sage and Jed Gray. We thank them for sharing their destination wedding, “A Gone with the Wind” theme in the Rocky Mountains. The photos are just breathtaking. If looking for your own destination wedding we hope our five couples, who also shared their special wedding day and unique wedding venues with you, will give you some ideas. I can’t end this publisher’s note without sharing the most exciting news in the Heartland to me. On May 1 we welcomed my first grandbaby, Finley Grace to our family. If excitement could jump off this page, believe me it would. My daughter Jessica “Sissy” is not only Finley’s mom but also the editor of Heartland LIVING. Watching Sissy the last four weeks with her daughter just fills my heart. Now it’s time to find that quiet place and enjoy my “Labor of Love.” God Bless,
Cindy Sebring Adams

Rafael Pacheco I am a Pisces named Rafael Pacheco. I was born on the island of Puerto Rico, but ironically I can’t swim. My dog thinks I am crazy for locking the door so many times in 10 seconds, and my cats think I am made of catnip. Everything I wear is black, gray or blue. If I put on something colorful I must have been in a hurry. Keep me away from triple layer chocolate cakes, flan or Oreos. They are my kryptonites. The 70’s were peaceful, the 80’s were rocking, the 90’s were military and the new millennium is inspiring. Photography is how I have let my artistic visions come to life since the early 90’s. Patience, kindness, sharing, sacrifice, love and not to judge I saw my mother practice these and they stayed within me. We are collective energy and all from the same Source. I don’t see the world through my eyes. I see it through my soul.

s fate would have it, Tierney, a Highlands County native and Leslie, a DeSoto County native, both with strong family roots in their communities, found themselves Texas residents in the midst of life changing times. In 2009, Tierney married Kolt Perkins, a third generation cattle rancher, and relocated to Clarksville, Texas. This meant she would be leaving her current residence of Colorado and resigning from her PR/Marketing career with the Professional Bull Riders, Inc. “The transition was hard for me, professionally, as I loved the career I had left and my new job options were underwhelming, to say the least”, Tierney recalled. In 2010, Kolt and Tierney welcomed a son, Barron Bleu. Leslie and her husband, Justin, a Texas native, were residing in Arcadia, Florida with their two daughters, Alexis and Berkleigh Paige “Bleu”. She also decided to resign from her job to be able to travel with Justin, whose job requires him to frequently travel out of town, and homeschool their youngest daughter, Bleu.

hese longtime friends and distant relatives have always had a unique brand of styling. Through the request of a few Florida friends for shopping recommendations, Tierney began keeping a list of stores in Texas that she loved who also shipped. It was then that the ladies fancied the notion that the stars were aligning for a joint venture. They could incorporate their passion for fashion into a desirable service for women across the world. Since the endeavor was their “love child”, they wanted to choose a name that represented of both of them. They didn’t have to look far because Tierney’s son, Barron Bleu, was named after Leslie’s youngest daughter, Berkleigh “Bleu”. Wild Bleu was then born. “Leslie and I share a quirky style concoction that is a fusion of so many elements that we love”, says Tierney. While their fashion sense is not identical, there is a definite osmosis when they bring together their visions. This chemistry, mixed with their bold new found Texan inspired fashion and the ever-present

feminine Southern inspirations, formed the basis of their style and new business known for its Southern Vogue and Texas Femme. ulfilling a lifelong dream in the summer of 2011, they planned their first buying trip and both were off to the Dallas Apparel Mart; the cracker girls were coming to town. The Florida girls were overwhelmed by the millions of square feet of designers selling everything from baubles to boots. “We were having a bad case of country girls with a flair for Cristal on a Boon’s Farm budget crisis” says Leslie. After a few Bloody Marys, they decided to locate the designer of a beloved dress that Leslie was wearing. “We drug out our three inch thick catalog of designers that were at market, found the designer of my dress and headed straight to their booth”, exclaimed Leslie. By happenstance, the designer herself happened to be at the booth and showed them her entire collection. This chance meeting with the designer turned into an invaluable relationship as a mentor and friend throughout this journey. This was the beginning of a lifelong dream come true, to share their unique style and love for fashion, all while being supportive wives and mothers.

oth being of born and raised in the Florida Heritage of the Langford family roots, the Wild Bleu clothing line and label you’ll find on most of their exclusive collection is “The Langford Line.” Another nod to their western culture, one that is deeply rooted in both women given their time on the rodeo trail, is the focus on the western genre of clothing and design. While developing ideas for a collection of graphic tees, Tierney was reading A Land Remembered for the 100th time alongside her husband on a road trip; she had a divine revelation. The new cattle company graphic tee design would be the “Punta Rassa Cattle Company,” and would encompass the traditions of old Florida. Punta Rassa is best known as a thriving cattle shipping town near Ft. Myers and as with the book, the graphic tee collection has received rave reviews and is popular in the United States and abroad. Cowgirl, a modern western lifestyle magazine, featured the collection as a must have item.

dding to the unique array of products that Wild Bleu offers is the recent addition of the leather collection hand crafted by Tierney’s mom, Triesta Langford Brehmer. As a young girl, Triesta’s father, Lewis Langford bought her a set of leather tools after wanting a belt with her name on the back like her father and grandfather. Mr. Langford told her to use her tools to make one, recognizing her artistic talent. From then on, she started designing her own styles, which started showing up in western stores when she was just fourteen years old. One of the most memorable moments was when she walked into Circle 3 Western Store in Wauchula to see her famous red velvet philigree belt with Tony Lama branded on it. Triesta has always been obsessed with belts and handbags, which she customizes to pay tribute to her Florida culture. Through the creation of Wild Bleu, she can now showcase her beautiful craftsmanship and love for her Western/Southern heritage. Her intricately designed custom pieces are created with the hopes their customers will hand down these modern day heirlooms from generation to generation. Tierney and Leslie specifically chose to start Wild Bleu with an “online” platform to accommodate their long distance partnership but realized that ecommerce was much more involved than first thought. Disappointed that both of them wouldn’t be able to be a part of day to day operations, they were thrilled to see the brand growing. With the success of Wild Bleu, especially the opening of a store front, a custom leather line and a mobile boutique, the ladies decided they needed to refine their operations and Leslie’s role transitioned from partner to investor and consultant to accommodate the growing business. These two sisterfriends are a true testament of following your roots, to remind you where you’re from and spreading your wings, to show you what you can become. City of Okeechobee Celebrating 100 Years!
By Audra Clemons Photos by Rafael Pacheco
One hundred years have
come and gone since the inception of the city of Okeechobee, which commands a Centennial celebration that is rightfully being hosted throughout the year including a kick-off event, the Mayor's Ball, a Centennial Scavenger Hunt, historical bus tours, a community birthday bash and other festivals. The city’s humble beginnings started in 1915, where the City of Okeechobee was founded by a small group of pioneers who migrated down river to the ‘The Bend’. Some of these pioneers envisioned commerce, as the rivers and lakes gave way to economic positioning, and others were searching for less crowded land to put down roots for their generational families that spanned across communities. The endeavors of each of these spirited pioneers families, like Peter Heartland Raulerson and Louisiana ChandlerLIVING who are cited as the very first April settlers with stories embedded in May the city’s lore, served a purpose far 2015 beyond their years.

Descendant to the first family of Okeechobee, Betty Chandler Williamson, was born in 1933 and has been a resident of Okeechobee nearly all of her life. Sonny Williamson, of Williamson Cattle Company is her husband, and they have been married for over half of a century. “Miz Betty” as she is lovingly known, is a fifth generation Floridian, and her family spans over an entire eight generations. “My great aunt was Peter Raulerson’s wife, and they came to Okeechobee in 1896 from Basinger, which was quite a good ways with horse and oxen and a cart,” said Mrs. Williamson of how her family arrived to the city. “We couldn’t ride the bus to school as children, not just my family, but there were the Smiths, Rodens and Sellers, Heartlandand we had to walk through trails and LIVING get on a dirt road because the bus at that June time wouldn’t pick up people in the city July 2015 limits,” recalls Mrs. Williamson. “With all the centennial celebration I am now

happy that I lived inside the city limits and get to participate in all of this.” Miz Betty recalls her teenage years, how she met her husband, and the enjoyment her friends had she had at Gilbert’s Theater where they were exposed to the world of cinema for the first time. “It brought the world in. I just dreamed of other places and clothes and cultures. It was just wonderful,” reminisces Mrs. Williamson. “The movies were great. They weren’t rated, and I think the raciest one at the time was Gone With The Wind. And, Gilbert’s also held a free movie day where everyone was welcome and received a gift bag. It was something really nice; I am still thankful to them for that.” Williamson recalls businesses in the city of Okeechobee that are merely figments of the imagination now - a meat market, hotels and a grocery store – all located on or near Park Street. These fond memories and stories appear to be enjoyable for Mrs. Williamson to tell. She

is taken back to a seemingly much smaller, simpler time and place. Okeechobee still holds onto this description in some ways. Another family name that is equated with the inception of Okeechobee is Culbreth. Gilbert’s, founded by the Culbreth family, started as an all night service station in downtown Okeechobee in 1924. Then, Gilbert Chevrolet opened in 1933, making it currently one of the oldest dealerships in Florida. As Mrs. Betty mentioned previously, the Gilbert family also had a theater, which seemed to be the gem of the Okeechobee community. Even so today, the family has an enterprise that continues to impact and contribute positively to the city of Okeechobee. “I am grateful to be part of the Okeechobee community, one whose loyalty has allowed our family to be in business for 90 years. It feels wonderful to be part of both the tradition and the community,” said Christa Culbreth Luna, third generation and owner of Gilbert Family of Companies Bert Culbreth, also third generation and

owner of Gilbert Family of Companies, adds, “although technology has changed and progressed over the years, at the end of the day, the guidance our dad gave us about taking care of the customers and treating them better than you want to be treated, that hasn’t changed at all.” This is a theme of the city. Businesses in Okeechobee seem to carry an old-fashioned attitude towards ‘how things get run’. Realizing it is important to keep the virtue of person-to-person relationships. Even though the world is changing at an exponential pace, integrity and values remain at the core of business in Okeechobee. Another business that transcends time is Domer’s, which began its business venture with Victor Jacob Domer, who cut his teeth

in business as a watchmaker, and who after the hurricane of 1926, became a ‘Jack of all Trades’. Russell Victor Domer bought the business from his father in 1957, and Ray Russell Domer followed suit in 1978. The most recent family members to helm the Domer’s business are Jacob and Justin. As the city of Okeechobee has grown, Domer’s has grown alongside it. From inventing patents, building branding irons, clearing farm land, drilling wells, creating water pumps, or whatever the community calls for. “We have machines here that my great grandfather purchased, and they sometimes work even better than our newer machines." says Justin Domer.

Okeechobee is a unique and exemplary rural city, one that prides itself on family values, religion and the strength of its community. It is a hospitable, inviting place that feels like almost everyone knows you by name. It is a city with economic revenue, still largely driven by agriculture and the subsidiary industries surrounding; and Okeechobee has even expanded to become a city attracting tourists for the winter months of the year.

The city is celebrating its 100th birthday, and these are merely a few select stories, about a few select families, that were around for its very formative years. Future children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren from these settler families will inevitably come and go from the city, but the values that shaped their childhood, and many others within Okeechobee, have been instilled. As Miz Betty says, “it’s important to remember your roots”. So, in the words of Humphrey Bogart, Okeechobee, “here’s looking at you, kid". Okeechobee is rich in history and community. Heartland
"I think my Great-Grandma was some spunky little lady to leave civilization, so to speak, and strike out across the woods with Grandpa and her kids to the wilds of nowhere to make a new home and town eventually."

Sage Bevis met Jed Gray in December of 2007 for the first time when she went on a hunting trip to the Williamson Cattle Ranch in Texas with her late father, Hal Bevis. After that meeting, Sage and Jed didn’t talk for four years, but Jed stuck in her memory from that day forward. Fast-forward half of a decade later, the two are standing at the altar in Estes Park, Colorado and getting married. Sage is from Arcadia, FL and Jed is from Throckmorton, TX, so the proximity the two had when they began dating was less than favorable. The odds of a long distance relationship lasting are pretty slim-to-none. This relationship beat the odds; this one was the diamond in the rough. Sage was in college at the University of Florida and Jed was in Texas working for the Williamsons, but they continued talking over the phone, making time for each other and eventually traveling to see each other as much as they could. “We started talking every day and we made it official. The first four years were long distance, and then we came to the point where we wanted to be together. Jed was talking about moving to Indiantown, FL because there was a ranch there that he could maybe transfer to,” said Sage when remembering the formative years of her relationship. Jed did just that, and in 2012 he moved halfway across the country to be with his sweetheart. Sage

and Jed were still long distance because she was in Gainesville, FL finishing school and he was in Okeechobee, FL working, however, they were much closer. They endured this long distance relationship for about one year. “He [Sage] was in Florida for a little less than a year when my Dad died and that’s when I knew I wanted to marry him. I was an emotional wreck and really down. Jed was only my boyfriend at the time and at any point he could have said it was too much, she’s crazy and I don’t need to deal with this. But, he didn’t walk away. He hung in there with me and fought every step of the way,” recalls Sage. Sage and her mother Tara.
It was nearly a year later when Jed proposed to Sage. “He had a whole big day planned. He wanted to go out to the ranch, and he had my horse involved and I completely messed it up,” said Sage. “When he asked me if I wanted to go to the ranch, I told him it was too hot and I didn’t feel like going that day.” When Sage didn’t budge, Jed slipped the ring on her finger while she was cooking

breakfast and popped the question. “I cried. I was surprised and I couldn’t believe it was happening. I was blown away and had no idea it was going to happen that day,” Sage said of the proposal. The next consecutive step after an engagement is to plan a wedding. And for them they had to figure out the wedding location because the soonto-be bride and groom had families from different states.

and I wanted an intimate ceremony. At first we thought Texas, and then we thought Wyoming to coincide with the rodeo but there weren’t any venues we liked. Then, my mom suggested Colorado because it’s not too far from Cheyenne, and she said that one of my Dad’s favorite places to visit was Rocky Mountain National Park in Estes Park,” said Sage. Colorado it was. The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park on Long’s Peak Lawn to be exact. This turned out to be the perfect place for Sage and Jed to say their vows.

A girl has to have a wedding dress. Sage found hers on Pinterest, although it was out of her price range. She recalls searching the world over for someone to replicate it, but no one wanted the pressure of making a perfect wedding dress. In Orlando there was a Russian seamstress, Nadia Goodwin, who agreed to do it, but fell short of Sage’s vision just a few days from her flying to Colorado.
She wanted the perfect venue for her wedding Something elegant Something historic Something memorable
SHE GOT IT
“When I showed up to pick up the dress it looked nothing like what I asked for. It looked like a cake. I cried, my mom cried and the seamstress cried. Goodwin said she’d fix it and we didn’t believe she would be able to do it. This was like showing up to a horse race without a horse; you can’t have a wedding without a dress. But Goodwin knocked it out of the park. From Thursday to Sunday the dress was made and it was exactly like my picture,” laughs Sage as she tells the near-harrowing story. When asked about getting married without her dad present Sage said this, “I was thinking that I just wanted to get down the isle without ruining my makeup. Not only was my Dad gone, but my Papa passed too, so I asked my Uncle Bill [Bevis] to walk with me, as well as my brother, Remington.” Sage did what she set out to do. She held her composure through the entire twenty-minute ceremony, where scriptures were read, rings exchanged and vows were exchanged.

her with all the details of her wedding. For the tables, Tara had collected lace table runners and gave them an antiqued appearance by soaking them in tea in her bathtub. They were complimented by mercury glass votive and elegant candelabras, accented with coral flowers and greenery and placed on grand king’s tables. An exquisitely detailed cake was displayed atop Sage’s grandmother’s lace linen, a family heirloom with ties to their love story heritage. “After the wedding at the reception, it seemed as if it was just about to rain and this beautiful rainbow came out. Immediately when I saw it I knew it was my Dad. That was his blessing and that was a really special moment,” says Sage about her wedding day. Sage recalls that it wasn’t just her that felt the moment, but that nearly the entire wedding party was in tears as well. After their wedding, Sage and Jed and their families headed to the Frontier Days in Wyoming to enjoy the rodeo festivities and celebrate. To allow their Florida friends and extended family to celebrate with the newlyweds, a wedding reception was held in Arcadia at the home of Sandra W. Welles, Sage’s grandmother. The happy couple resides in Okeechobee, FL and will soon be celebrating their first wedding anniversary! ¢

I wanted a location that had it ALL‌ meaning the chapel, reception, lodging, food and a wedding planner. I didn't want our guests to need to leave the property at all. We only had to bring in our decorations, DJ, cake and photographer. Most of all, I just wanted it to be simple and beautiful. Honey Lake met all of those requirements; it actually exceeded our expectations in every possible way. We had approximately 85 guests total on the property. Our wedding was absolute perfection! 04.12.2014 Ricki and Riley are true water bugs. They both grew up on a lake in Highlands County. They love to surf and paddle board. Ricki and Riley wanted to do a destination wedding on a beach. After much consideration, they decided to have in Highlands County to make it easier for grandparents, family and friends, but the bride and groom still wanted a beach theme. So they hosted a wedding "Beach Theme" locally with over 200 guests at Island View Restaurant. Their wedding colors were beach themed, they held the wedding outside and brought in tropical plants.
72
Inside the venue they continued with the beach theme, which included table decorations, gift area and a surf board for guests to sign, which they now hang in their home. They also carried out the theme with a special made tropical drink and wedding cake with a Pina Colada flavor.

Wreath decorated doors opened to wooden church pews, mason jars overflowing with flowers, a beautiful rustic archway wrapped in sheer and a pink flowering unity tree, all nestled in an oak hammock. Our banquet area (covered barn) was decorated in burlap, sheer and hydrangeas. Among the setting was a large fire surrounded with rocking chairs. "As I started planning our wedding day, I knew I wanted someplace that was breath taking all on its own. I tend to have a knack for finding that one thing in the store that can break the bank. Our venue was actually extremely reasonably priced compared to most. My fiancĂŠ and I knew we were paying for our wedding day ourselves and when we walked down the isle we were determined to have our entire wedding paid for. We did in fact have everything paid for before our wedding day, mostly due to a lot of do it your-self projects. The main reason I chose the Ringling was because it spoke for itself. I love architectural dwellings. I love detail. The Ringling Mansion was filled with it. Everything turned out exactly the way I envisioned and then some." ~ Emily

Public Art
What is It and Why it Matters
P
ublic art is exactly that, art in public spaces. The term “public art” may bring to mind images of historic bronze statues of a man on horseback in a park. Today, public art can take a wide range of forms and sizes—and can be temporary or permanent. Public art can include murals, sculpture, memorials, community art and even performances.
Showcasing
The size of public art can be large or small. It can tower 50’ high or be a decorative paving you walk on. The style may be abstract or realistic (or both) and it may be cast, carved, built, assembled or painted. The art can be site-specific or stand in contrast to its surroundings. Public art can be found in urban and rural communities and is often managed by museums or art organizations.

Artists can deliver messages, unfiltered by galleries, agents or the media and the site displaying the artist’s work comes with an audience. Creative expression can be directed to business people in a downtown area, children at a playground, families in a public park or seniors at a community center. Being public, the art is free and accessible to everyone. Public art creates a heightened awareness of the location site, of the people and the broader
¢
context of what’s around the site area. Today, viewers may snap a photo of the art on their smartphone and share the experience with others through social media, extending the reach of public art far beyond the site. Communities also gain value through public art – cultural, social and economic. American cities and towns aspire to be places where people want to live and want to visit. Having a community identity is becoming important in a world where everyplace tends to look like each other. Towns with strong public art expressions breaks the trend of blandness and sameness, giving communities a stronger sense of place, uniqueness and pride. In a diverse community, all art cannot appeal to all people, nor should it be expected to do so. Art attracts attention; that is what it is supposed to do. Is it any wonder that public art causes controversy? Varied popular opinion is inevitable and it is a healthy sign that the public environment is acknowledged rather than ignored. Public art has proven to play an important role in our everyday lives as it will enhance and complement our environment, bring communities together, offer social and educational opportunities and promote tourism. Art connects artists to their communities and enhance the public appreciation of the art. When we encourage art, we also encourage creativity and thoughtfulness. Public art can inspire awe, draw out deep emotion, make us smile and help us escape the stress of everyday life. ¢

Kale, spinach, carrots, apples, beets, pears…these are just a small variety of the many fruits and vegetables available for you to eat every day; however, most of us don’t consume nearly as many healthy fruits and vegetables as we should to ensure our bodies are getting the right amount of nutrients. One way to ensure you get the most out of your fruits and veggies is to juice. In fact, this is a way that many people either supplement their diet or consume their entire daily calories! Did you know that 95% of the vitamins and enzymes our bodies need are found in raw fruit and vegetable juice? In order to fill yourself up with the same amount of nutrients you would receive in one 16 oz juice, you would need to eat 10-12 apples, 2 pounds of carrots, or 8 pounds of spinach. Drinking freshly made juice releases a highly concentrated amount of vitamins, minerals, and enzymes into your bloodstream which allows your digestive organs a change to rest. There are different methods of juicing from the use of a hand held device to the use of a motorized “juicer.” There are several types of electric juicers: masticating, centrifugal, and triturating juicers; the difference between these is in how they extract the juice from the fruit/vegetable. Some leave more “pulp” and thus more digestible fibers behind; others completely extricate the “pulp” and result in a very smooth juice. The key is to find a way to juice that is simple and convenient for you and the results in a juice you want to drink. So will any old juice do? Sadly, the answer is no. The health benefits of juice simply aren’t the same from a bottled, processed juice as they are from fresh pressed juice. In fact, even freshly pressed juice begins to lose its natural value as soon as it meets the air. This is through a process called oxidization and can only be slowed down – not stopped – if the juice is stored in a tightly sealed glass jar in the refrigerator. Even still, it is best to drink fresh juice the day it is pressed for the most nutritional impact.
84
There is a lot of current research underway that shows the healing processes of juicing. Not only can it be used for weight loss and increased energy levels, it has also been shown to reduce the chances of heart disease, cancer, and strokes.
There is a phenomenal documentary regarding the concept of juicing as a way of restoring health, “Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead.” It follows a man named Joe Cross, who has been struggling with excess weight and a debilitating autoimmune disease that doctors and conventional medicine have been unable to help, as he embarks on a new journey towards health. This documentary highlights the many benefits that juicing can provide in everyone’s life and is definitely worth the watch. I challenge you to learn more about the benefits of juicing and to find a way to incorporate juicing into your daily routine! ¢

Kathleen Munson
A Legacy of Success
Kathleen Munson, a native of Saginaw, Michigan, moved to Lakeland after her husband’s job was transferred in the early 80’s. Not one to sit idly by, Kathleen jumped into the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce with both feet. After 27 years working for the Chamber, 22 years as president, she retired leaving a long legacy of advocacy of local businesses and schools. “It was a rewarding career and makes you appreciate how vibrant an economy and community we have,” says Kathleen. “Since I’ve retired, which I highly recommend, I have had the opportunity to volunteer. It is a gratifying feeling being able to give back.” Kathleen, with her experience with the Chamber and her church, has continued living a life giving back to the community through the local school district. “I’ve gotten involved with HEARTH Project which is a program under Polk County Schools. It provides service to homeless students. Right now we have over 3,000 homeless students enrolled in Polk County Schools. It’s a huge issue.” The HEARTH Project assists homeless and in-transition families and children. Its goal is to tear down any obstacles that would prevent a student from coming to school by providing transportation, aid with lunch and school supplies as well as hygiene necessities. “I was overwhelmed by all the services this program provides. Their mission is to get homeless students enrolled to continue their education but in order to do that they need to provide their meals including the free or reduced lunch. It’s a neat program and I am thoroughly enjoying it.” Kathleen is also very involved in her church, The First United Methodist Church of Lakeland, and hopes to become more involved with Neighborhood Ministries, an after school program, by tutoring and helping wherever needed. has a number of ministries reaching the community, also provides clothing thru a “Clothes Closet”. “I never knew how valuable the Clothes Closet was until I started working with HEARTH Services,” says Kathleen. “We have a very giving community.” Kathleen is a woman of personal and professional success. Her secret is all about keeping life in perspective and balance. “I think keeping balance in your life is so important. I have two wonderful sons who have given me four wonderful grandchildren. I think sometimes you can get caught between putting too much of your time and effort in one area and lose sight of other areas of your life. This has always been one of my goals in life; to make time for the spiritual, the physical, the emotional, and the work time but it is so worth it to be balanced.”

OKEECHOBEE COUNTY SCENE
The Mayor's Centennial Gala The Mayor's Centennial Gala, held on April 18 at the Silver Palms RV Resort, was a huge success. The turn out was great at the black-tie event and everyone appeared to enjoy the night of celebration. Many danced the night away to the music of Street Talk Orchestra. 1 Stop Party Shop catered the event and beautifully decorated the room. The City of Okeechobee Centennial Celebration committee did a wonderful job coordinating this event and they thank the Settler & Pioneer sponsors for helping to make it possible. Lakeland Derby Photos By Amber Callaham
The Lakeland Derby is an annual “Derby Style event staged on beautiful Lake Mirror in downtown Lakeland on Friday, April 25. With the entertaining flair of the event and the competitive spirit of the race, the Derby was a memorable occasion. The Lakeland Derby captured the thrill of a race and the purity of sports entertainment in a hometown setting. The true essence of the Derby was a reward knowing the proceeds will go to support Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine. The Derby featured ten beautifully hand-crafted swan paddle boats in a thrilling race to the finish line.
