letter fromTHE PUBLISHER It seems the summer is flying by!

I hope you are having a wonderful summer and have been able to find time to do the things that you love with your family and friends. We are so blessed to live in such a beautiful area with so many options to enjoy nature, outdoor activities and the Sunshine State’s healthy foods. Whether you took a family vacation while the kids were out of school or just hung around your home and backyard, what’s most important is spending time with your children. I’m always excited to see what the staff at Heartland LIVING has created for you in each issue with their writings, photography and Bridgette Waldau’s amazing creative designs. To share a little of the past, Bridgette and I worked together on a smaller coupon magazine before creating Heartland LIVING. After a short couple of years, I needed a different challenge, a new goal. I had been hearing from some of my advertisers and the community that they felt we needed a local magazine showing what is going on in our Heartland community. Bridgette was one of the first I shared my vision and goal with. Her comment was “your community deserves it’s own Lifestyle Community Magazine, so you should do it.” I prayed hard about it and now with my team and the support of all our advertisers and readers, I get to put my heart & soul into something I love and I thank all of you for that. With kids going back to school I wanted to do a back to school feature story but I knew I wanted something meaningful and not just a photo shoot about fashion. I reached out to our writer Katy Fassler who is a school teacher with my ideas on the importance of reading and sharing it with my readers. Katy took some of my ideas but immediately had her own and started researching. With her excellent ideas on how to showcase the story I turned my backyard into a backyard reading gathering. We invited friends, parents and children to enjoy the day of gathering together, reading, eating snacks and lunch and then ending with the kids playing and swimming while parents visited. Katy also joined photographer Caroline Maxcy Fox and spent an afternoon with the Kane & Summer Sodrel's family in their backyard garden. Summer and I had talked over the summer about her garden and how she started it and what it has grown into today. She can provide her family, not only organic food, but also quality time she spends with her children outside each day sharing with them where their food comes from. Thanks Summer for sharing your family with us. Heartland LIVING is happy to share the milestone of Okeechobee Main Street’s arts and culture program. A public work of art in Okeechobee caught the attention of the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs and Okeechobee Main Street was invited to become a local art agency for Okeechobee County. We hope you enjoy their story and also the photos of the beautiful butterfly sculptures in downtown Okeechobee’s Flagler Park that started it all. As we get ready to once again attend the Florida Magazine Association Charlie Awards Gala in August, we want to thank all our advertisers and readers for all your support. We wouldn’t be attending this award’s event if it weren’t for you. Heartland LIVING August September 2018

BRIDGETTE WALDAU has been a graphic and fine artist for over 30 years. She received her A.A. from the Ft. Lauderdale Institute of Art and a Bachelor of Fine Art degree from Stetson University. She moved to Okeechobee in 1994 where she opened her art studio. Bridgette has been creative director for several publications, working with Heartland Publications & Marketing as art director since 2011, winning six Florida Magazine Charlie Awards in 2015 & 2017. She is Arts & Culture Alliance Director (13 years) for Okeechobee Main Street. Bridgette is married to James Waldau, a retired firefighter from the City of Hialeah. RAFAEL PACHECO I am a Pisces and was born on the island of Puerto Rico. My dog thinks I am crazy for locking the door so many times in 10 seconds and my cats think I am made of catnip. Everything I wear is black, gray or blue. If I put on something colorful I must have been in a hurry. Photography is how I have let my artistic visions come to life since the early 90’s. Patience, kindness, sharing, sacrifice, love and not to judge I saw my mother practice these and they stayed within me. We are collective energy and all from the same Source. I don’t see the world through my eyes. I see it through my soul.

LAYNE PRESCOTT Layne was born into a military family, has lived overseas but did most of her growing up in Arcadia. After meeting and marrying Mike Prescott, she moved to Wauchula in 1979 and now calls it her home. She and Mike raised their three children there and now are reaping the benefits of their labor with six sweet, beautiful and perfect grandchildren. Her cooking style is eclectic and best described as “Southern comfort cuisine”. Her greatest joy comes from three things: her faith, loving on her family, and getting in the kitchen and “whipping” up something good.

KATY FASSLER has been telling stories since she was able to scribble her name in crayon on the wall. Hailing from Akron, Ohio, she moved to Sebring in 2006 to attend the Great Commission Bible Institute. Katy, an avid reader and book collector lives by Dr. Seuss’ advice, “Fill your house with stacks of books, in all the crannies and all the nooks.” Katy and her husband, Sean, live in Sebring with their two daughters, Adia and Emery. CAROLINE MAXCY FOX was born and raised in Central FL. She decided to be an artist at the age of five. After achieving her BSA from Florida State University, she practiced in the field of design for six years and then received a Masters in Graphic Design from NC State University. She honed her artistic craft and developed a "way of seeing" that fuels her work. Caroline is a full time photographer and lives with her husband in the heart of Sebring, FL. Together they run the day-to-day life at The Great Commission Bible Institute as the Site Coordinators and Dorm Parents. Naturally, adventure abounds. ANDREW TOMLIN, the son of a commercial artist was born and raised in Chicago, IL. His appetite for travel began in 1967 when his grandmother took him to Tikal, an archaeological dig in Guatemala. Since then he has traveled to six continents and is looking forward to even more. He took up photography in 2009 and discovered a passion for wildlife and nature. He inherited his father’s eye for color, space, and composition and many of his photos “look like a painting.” In addition to photography he publishes a travel blog: "On the Road with Tall Guy and Jet." JOANIE TOMLIN is originally from Japan with a slight (29 year) detour in Chicago and moved to South Florida in 2006. An avid traveler, scuba diver, and nature-lover, she bought her first DLSR camera in 2009 to share the beauty she saw both underwater and topside with family and friends. Since then she has been published in books, newspapers, and websites in North and South America.

The more you Read “ the more Things you know. The more that you Learn the more Places you'll go.” -Dr. Seuss

With summer in full swing and school right around the corner, many are thinking about how to best help our children educationally. There is a simple answer: read. More and more research is being done on the effects of reading to our children and teaching kids to regularly curl up with a good book. The findings: life-changing. Opening the pages of a book opens the world to your child.

Reading

is more than a skill. Reading is a lifelong journey that begins with parents opening its first pages. “It’s so important to start reading from Day One,” says Liza Baker, executive editorial director at Scholastic. “The sound of your voice, the lyrical qualities of the younger [books] are poetic. It’s magical, even at 8 weeks old they focus momentarily, they’re closer to your heart.” As they begin to grow, families should make sure books are available everywhere in the home. But it shouldn’t end when kids begin to read on their own. “As they become independent readers, we tend to let them go, but even kids in older demographics love nothing more than that time with their parents,” Baker says. “We’re blown away that kids, time and again, said the most special time they recall spending with a parent is reading together.”

Make Reading Magical

Reading to your child is more than the story. It is the time, the closeness and the bond that is created when entering the pages of a book. Younger children will want to visit the same book over and over, do it. Give characters voices. Act excited even when the words on the page are imprinted in your mind from repetition. Older children want the excitement, mystery and wonder of a new adventure. Take the time to read with and to your children daily. Read a short picture book before bed, read a chapter after dinner, find time daily to curl up with your children with a good book.

I do believe something very magical can happen when you read a good book.

̶ J.K. Rowling

Heartland LIVING August September 2018

Make Reading Social It is easy to assume the reading is a singular activity but it does not have to be. Visit your local library for information on story circles, find friends to do a weekly story time, encourage kids to discuss the books they are reading. Visit bookstores and join their book clubs. Create a book club with their friends. To make it even more fun, host a book party. Invite friends and families to bring a book to read, share, and trade. Have reading time in creative spaces, have snacks, dress up as your favorite storybook character, and read. Bring a book and take a different one home. „

Make Reading Special Dr. Seuss famously penned, “Fill your house with stacks of books, in all the crannies and all the nooks.” Surrounding your children with books invites them to take part. Put them in their room, on the coffee table, and in the car. Encourage backyard hammock reading, treehouse books, laying in the sun with a giant quilt reading, turn off all the lights and read under a blanket with a flashlight. Creating a special reading environment will spark a love of the activity. Treasure favorites. Get excited with the newest book by their favorite author when comes out. Make a list of books they want to read and check them off when completed.

Make Reading Educational Reading does not need to only be adventures in make believe. Many children want to read nonfictional work to learn about their favorite animals, time in history, or how to do amazing things. Encourage young readers to read a vast array of literature, poems, biographies, and such. Reading on many subjects not only makes them smarter but also helps in all subject areas at school. Give confidence to your child by introducing them to new things, facts, and information. „

The state of Florida has realized the overwhelming importance of reading and is leading the way in making a difference in the publicschool systems through Just Read, Florida!

“Just

Read, Florida!"

is the statewide reading initiative that prioritizes reading in Florida's public schools and among all the community groups and volunteer organizations that support them. Just Read, Florida! is based on the latest reading research that includes emphasis on phonemic awareness (knowing that words are made up of sounds), phonics (the link between sounds and letters), vocabulary (what words mean and how to say them), fluency (the ability to read words accurately and quickly), and comprehension (the ability to understand what you read). On September 7, 2001, Governor Jeb Bush signed an executive order designating Just Read, Florida! as a comprehensive and coordinated reading initiative. Charged with establishing reading as a core value in this state, Just Read, Florida! was launched with the unequivocal goal of every child being able to read at or above their grade. With that goal in mind, Just Read, Florida! focuses on three main components; student success, educator quality and parent support.” The ability to read is an amazing gift. Entering the world authors create by stringing nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs together is an adventure. To better ready your child, read to them and model the action by reading yourself. Find incredible books and immerse yourself in its pages. If you or your child does not like to read, encourage yourself by knowing you just have not found the right book yet.

A TREK OF A LIFETIME: THE GCBI CLASSROOM COMES ALIVE IN

Israel

Story and Photography by Caroline Maxcy Fox

If you peer into the history of Sebring Florida you’d quickly find that it was founded by Christian pilgrims of sort. A retired George Sebring, strong in his faith, headed south where he laid eyes on the clear waters of Lake Jackson and “envisioned a religious community built in paradise.” The city on a circle was dreamed up as a religious community so it’s only fitting that 100 years later nestled right in the heart of that city is the home of the Great Commission Bible Institute that attracts students from across the globe to come and study here.

The 10 month intensive Bible program founded and taught by Dr. Randall Smith, pastor at Sebring Grace Church, focuses solely on the Bible. At the start of the year the students head out of town and read the Bible from cover to cover aloud together in 8 days. It’s intense to say the least but a great way to get their eyes on every word of the Bible and gives an overarching, holistic view of the story of God’s people and redemption through Jesus Christ. For the remainder of the 10 months they slow down a bit and dive into the entirety of The Word all 66 books, 1189 chapters. The stories of the Bible develop deeper meaning as they dig deep into the cultural context, style of writing and how it all applies to our lives today.

After 10 months at home in the heart of Sebring and deep

in the Word the students have the opportunity to partake in a 12 day trip to Israel and watch as the stories come to life. They walk where ancient stories took place and breath in the air rich with history and personal, spiritual meaning. The Word that shapes their lives is now tangible beneath their dusty, sandal clad feet.

The trip which spans a total of 10 touring days is all brought together by Dr. Randall Smith and his Biblical tour program Christian Travel Study Programs. It takes students on a journey following in the steps of Jesus, His disciples and Old Testament figures in the Bible where we ask the question, “How does standing on this spot help me understand what God communicated better?” From Bethlehem to Nazareth to the shores of Galilee to the Judean Desert, ancient Jericho and the cliffs of Ein Gedi to the streets of ancient Jerusalem, the Temple Mount steps and down the crowded Via Dolorosa the pages they studied for the past year come to life in the warm Israel light in vibrant and very real new ways.

The Tour: Myself and my husband, Devon Fox (who also teaches the New Testament at GCBI) are in charge of the discipleship experience for the students throughout the year as the Site Coordinators and Dorm Parents and were thrilled to have the opportunity to tour alongside them in Israel this year. It would be an understatement to say the feet on the ground experience of the trip came as a surprise. The tour moved at a breathtakingly fast pace and the weight of the significance and meaning of each site weighed heavy on our hearts. If you blinked you missed it. But we wouldn’t have it any other way. We stepped off the plane in Tel Aviv after a 12 hour overnight flight and stepped onto our tour bus with our fellow tourmates and without a single empty seat. After a short drive we arrived at our first stop Neot Kedumim, a nature preserve filled only with plants and vegetation mentioned in the Bible and gave us a glimpse of what the land would have looked like in Bible times. We looked in on a well, threshing floor and olive press. We crushed hyssop and „

Day two The next morning we started off at Caesarea Maritima and toured the seaside ruins of a city heavy with history before making our way along the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean coast past an ancient aqueduct and up to Mt. Carmel to look out upon the Valley of Armageddon. We toured Zippori a town just up from Nazareth where Jesus very likely could have come with his father Joseph a carpenter to work on local building projects. we set out up and over the hills from Nazareth to the Sea of Galilee. The famous lake appeared over the horizon and popped in and out of view between the peaks as we made our way to the starting point of a hike and trekked up to a perch high above. We were about to spend an entire day on its shores but needed to get our bearings about us first from the birds eye view of Mt. Arbel. The little corner we could view of the famous freshwater lake from our vantage point was the shoreline where most of Jesus’ early ministry took place. It’s Capernum and the Mount of Beatitudes and the shores where He first called His disciples off their boats to become fishers of men. aunders Law Group is a civil trial practice with two lawyers, each of whom is Board Certified by the Florida Bar as experts in civil trial matters and specialists in business litigation. Together, Tom Saunders and K.C. Bouchillon have more than sixty (60) years of combined trial experience in personal injury, wrongful death, commercial litigation, business litigation and insurance claims. They have conducted trials across Central Florida before juries and judges alike. A very small percentage of attorneys in Florida are able to claim the distinction of being Board Certified and an even smaller percentage can claim to be double Board Certified. Having two double Board Certified lawyers in one location provides each client with expert analysis of their civil or business litigation needs. In addition, Tom Saunders maintains a significant family law practice. Tom has been listed for many years in Super Lawyers magazine for his ability as a family law practitioner. Indeed, Tom takes his civil trial experience and business litigation background and uses it to help family law clients when the assets of the marriage involve business assets or interests.

Day Seven - Day Ten We arrived the evening of Day 7, a welcomed cool breeze in the air as we stepped off the bus, and moved into our hotel and home base for the next 5 days. We visited the Mt. Olives, Gethsemane, the old city Jewish Quarter and the Western (Wailing) Wall all of which pulsed with the hustle of modern day and the intermingling of religions. At the South Wall Excavations we sat on the temple steps and imagined all the stories of those, including Jesus, who walked this exact path. We visited Yad Vashem (the Holocaust Memorial) and sat in the shade of the Avenue of the Righteous Gentiles listening to first person stories of a Jewish family deeply affected by the Holocaust. We toured Bethlehem, gazed out upon the Shepherd’s Field and pressed our way through the Church of the Nativity with the crowds. And on our last full day starting at the Pools of Bethesda in the old city we wound our way down the Via Dolorosa to the Church of the„ Bethlehem Church of the Nativity

Holy Sepulchre shoulder to shoulder with Christian pilgrims from across the globe longing to remember the journey of Jesus that day He changed the world on the cross by bearing the weight of our sins and rose again leaving an empty garden tomb. Tired and heavy with the weight of life changing experiences our students arrived back home to the City on the Circle and began to part ways each heading off to their next destination in life whether it be in college or work or ministry life. The process of mentally and spiritually unpacking the things we experienced in the Holy Land will be a long one I’m sure but with a scribbling of notes, a collection of momentos and photos in our hands all telling the story of the way the Word came to life on the sunclad streets of Israel the memory has a chance to live on for generations to come.

“The Israel trip was overwhelming in the best possible way. Day in and day out we were immersed in culture, history, and truth straight from the Word. I learned more than I originally thought possible and was stretched in ways I had not anticipated. The Word of God came alive before my eyes and it is still difficult to sum up the experience into words. I left Israel changed with a heart for His word more than ever.” - 2018 GCBI Grad Jennai Hagen

“The Israel trip really brought the Bible to life. Walking where Jesus walked and going to the other locations where popular biblical stories took place was an overwhelming experience. Even though we may not have the exact point of the locations or the dirt Jesus touched with the bottom of His feet, it doesn’t matter. The tomb for example may not even be the exact tomb Jesus’ body was laid in. The location of the tomb isn’t the greatest evidence for Jesus’ resurrection but its Him who lives inside of us. The trip made me realize that its not the journey of the feet that means the most, it’s the journey of the heart. How and why Jesus did what He did for us, not where Jesus did this for us.” - Josh Lester, 2018 GCBI Grad

“I can not think of a better trip after spending a year going through the Bible from cover to cover. Standing on Mount Arbel overlooking Nazareth put Jesus’ ministry into perspective for me. This is the place where our Lord and Savior set the stage for a Christ follower. Things in the Bible that didn’t seem to make sense came to life as I walked the streets of Jerusalem and Bethlehem. I will be forever thankful to have taken this Journey through the Holy Land.” - 2018 GCBI Grad Marissa MacLurg

TheButterflyEffect

Story and Photography by Andrew and Joanie Tomlin

Urban Dictionary.com: The Butterfly Effect is the scientific theory that a single occurrence, no matter how small, can change the course of the universe forever.

In Okeechobee, the Hamrick Butterfly Garden Butterfly Sculpture project began in September 2017, when Okeechobee Main Street (OKMS) Arts & Cultural Alliance Director Bridgette Waldau applied for a grant from the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs. She wanted to bring additional public art to Okeechobee, and do it in a way that would be welcomed by the community. She modeled her grant application after the Kaleidoscope Butterflies in Flight Project in Lakeland, FL.„

Heartland LIVING August September 2018

65

The Hamrick Butterfly Garden in Okeechobee’s

downtown Flagler Park had just been given a muchneeded face-lift and was designated as a certified monarch butterfly garden by the North American Butterfly Association in July 2017. Around the world, people view the butterfly as representing endurance, change, hope and life. To Native Americans, the butterfly is a symbol of change and joy. There are no doubt butterflies having significant meaning and they are often featured in celebrations and weddings. Their beauty, miraculous metamorphosis, and carefree flight spark the imagination of children of all ages. Waldau’s vision was to install eight beautiful metal butterflies in and around the garden at different heights, giving the illusion of flight. This would be a public work of art, free and open to everyone visiting the downtown area. Waldau saw this project as a collaborative community effort executed by six local artists, two Okeechobee High School art students and five senior residents from the Grand Oaks Assisted Living Facility of Okeechobee. The grant was awarded, and the project approved by the Okeechobee City Council in January 2018.

"Rock 'n' Roll Heaven" painted by Bridgette Waldau is the official Monarch Butterfly Sculpture. Sponsored by the Budjinski Family in memory of their son and brother Jason Budjinski, it symbolizes rebirth and new life.

All the artists donated their talent and time, with each

drawing upon their own life experience for inspiration. Artists who designed and painted the eight large butterflies are Fawn McNeill Barr, Angie Griffin, Diane Richmond Hall, Kathy Scott, Dana Vines and Bridgette Waldau. OHS students Chelsea Burgos and Rodolfo Juarez IV designed their butterflies and painted alongside Grand Oaks Assisted Living residents George Corbin, Sam Smith, Jean Wallace, Ruth Durham, Doris Minton and Kimberly Rucks, activity director. An extra addition to the project is a smaller Monarch Butterfly sculpture, also painted by Bridgette Waldau, and affixed to the gardens’ gazebo. This was created to be the garden’s guardian angel and a symbol of new life.

Angie Griffin - "Rainbow Hope"

The concept of senior citizens and high school students working together on the 4-5’ wingspan butterflies was ingenious. Sponsors and private donors quickly supported the project. Mill Iron Metalworks created the butterfly templates in February, which were then passed on to the artists. Once the painting of the butterflies was complete, the Gilbert Family of Companies (Gilbert Collision Center) applied a protective weather-seal on each of the butterflies. The City of Okeechobee and Public Works helped to prepare the garden by pouring concrete pads for the sculpture placements, trimming, mulching and installing the benches. Everyone involved understood the objective and scope of the sculpture and worked together as a community. Metal and paint were transformed into nine uniquely beautiful butterflies flying together in the garden, a masterpiece that will be appreciated by all who visit the downtown area.

of Cultural Affairs and began the process of Okeechobee County signing a resolution to designate Okeechobee Main Street a Local Art Agency. Thanks to the Board of Okeechobee County Commissioners, in May 2018, OKMS was granted status as a Local Art Agency as out-lined by the State of Florida statutes 265.32. Okeechobee Main Street is the first and currently the only Florida Main Street organization to be awarded this prestigious status. Local Art Agencies provide services, support and programs for arts organizations, artists and their local communities. Their mission is to inspire participation in, and a passion for the arts in their communities. formed in 2005 it has given the Okeechobee community multiple mural and sculpture projects, the annual Top of the Lake Art Fest, Taste of Okeechobee, Art & Wine Walk, Artist’s Series, as well as many other projects and events. With their new designation as a Local Art Agency, the committee will qualify for funding, support, and even more opportunities such as art in education, lifelong learning and art in public places. “This butterfly sculpture project has been a wonderful accomplishment for us. It is astonishing to think, here in Okeechobee, we went from zero art representation 13 years ago to being discovered by the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs because of this project. Now, as a Local Art Agency for Okeechobee County, we will continue to nurture the arts in Okeechobee, adding more unique art experiences that will showcase our special community" – Bridgette Waldau What began as the simple vision of bringing butterflies to a garden has resulted in creating a powerful force for art. Like the butterfly, the future of art and culture in Okeechobee County is full of beauty and hope.

It does not take a huge space to grow a large variety of foods. The Sodrel's family garden is a 20x20 area and they have just recently added an additional 20x20 garden bed. “Right now I am growing okra, tomatoes, peppers, squash, zucchini, potatoes, and blueberries. We also grow peas, carrots, eggplant, green beans, herbs, and other things. It depends on the

The Sodrel's family garden has blossomed beyond their backyard. Now, with the help of social media, more and more people are being inspired and are beginning to follow their lead. Summer’s Instagram and Facebook pages are quickly inspiring families in the community. “I started sharing pictures on Facebook and people started asking questions and sharing photos. I started a community page. My goal was to invite seasoned gardeners and farmers and people just starting out to help each other. We can post photos and ask what is going on with my plants,” said summer. The Facebook Community page is Southern Dirt and Sunshine and a great resource for inspirational garden photos, tips and ideas.

According to Parent-Based Prevention (PBP), gardening is beneficial for the brain, the body, and the soul. Studies have shown children who participate in gardening projects scored higher in science achievement. It is easy to make a simple garden into a great teaching tool. Summer states, “The wonder of seeing a garden grow may spark your kids to ask questions like: Why do the plants need sun? How does the plant “drink” water? Soon you will be talking about soil, photosynthesis, and can add math by measuring and weighing."

Kids who grow their own vegetables eat them! Grow a variety of things and try new vegetables. Find creative recipes to make together. The physical activity of digging, weeding, carrying a watering can, or pushing a wheelbarrow are all great for building muscle, developing an appreciation for work ethic, and leave less time to be sitting inside watching tv. Kids need time for meaningful family connection. Invest in your children. Take the time to make a difference in their selfesteem, work ethic, and appreciation of the earth by creating a family garden. Be inspired by the Sodrel family and make your own backyard garden.

heartland SCENE The Chamber of Commerce of Okeechobee County Photography by Sharon Cannon

The Chamber of Commerce of Okeechobee County celebrated their First Responders with a luncheon that recognized them as unsung heroes; those heroes that run right into danger as they are guiding others away from it. While the luncheon was filled with dedicated speakers, they also brought a little laughter, showed emotion and spoke of thankfulness for their jobs. The passion and commitment to the citizens they serve in Okeechobee County came through clearly. As many times as we could say Thank You to our First Responders, it would never be enough for they put their lives on the line every day. Even when they are off duty, they are really on, ready and willing to help in whatever situation they are needed. For all those in attendance, the time spent hearing the amazing accounts of their daily routines will not soon be forgotten. We may not know them all, but we certainly owe them all and a Thank You just doesn’t ever seem to be enough. The County and City First Responders were represented well and were given the opportunity to share their experiences. Those making presentations were: Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Department – Sheriff Noel Stephen, Sgt. Michael Hazellief, Deputy Jack Nash, K-9 Unit Officer Leland Schoonmaker and Samba; Okeechobee County Fire Rescue – Deputy Fire Chief Earl Wooten; Okeechobee County 911 – Communications specialist Sherry Pollard; Okeechobee City Police Major Donald Hagan and Okeechobee City Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief Lalo Rodriguez.

Mohs is a surgical procedure used to carefully remove cancerous skin cells resulting in minimal removal of healthy tissue. It is extremely effective in eliminating recurring cases of skin cancer. The procedure is performed by taking layer by layer of affected tissues and checking under a microscope for cancerous cells throughout the surgery. It ensures all the cancerous cells are removed while maintaining as much healthy tissue as possible. Mohs surgery enables surgeons to precisely identify and remove an entire tumor / skin cancer while leaving the surrounding healthy tissue intact and unharmed. It has the highest success rate ( up to 99%) of all skin cancer treatments.
