is in full swing in the Heartland of Florida and if you didn’t know it, just step outside. Wow is it HOT! If you’re a native of Florida then you’re used to the heat but I think our summers are getting hotter and hotter. I hope you have found ways to get out of your homes and enjoy the outdoors on your patios, pools, taking kids to the playgrounds, summer gardens or maybe visit some of our farmers markets if you didn’t plant a garden this year.

As for myself I’ve taken a couple mini vaca’s to our Florida beaches with my girlfriends, one being my BFF for the last 36 years, Nancy Redding. There’s nothing like best friends getting together and enjoying friendship, activities, food and a nice glass of wine to end a beautiful day. I’ve had my bucket list of things I want to do in life and have checked a few off with my friend, Diana Albritton, the last couple years water rafting and zip lining in the mountains. Loved it! I did have to do a little convincing to Nancy but this summer I checked off another one during our St. Petersburg trip, where we went parasailing. It was really cool being up so high, calm and quiet even for a few minutes. Hope you are enjoying your summer and checking adventures off your bucket list as well. If you’re like us we are still finishing the summer with activities’ that we can find right here in our own backyard of the Heartland. In this issue we share a couple of adventures close to home where you could take the family and/or friends to finish out your summer. One being the World’s Largest Exhibition “Art of the Brick” in downtown Tampa presented by the Vinik Family Foundation and is free to all. The sculptures are life-sized and made entirely out of LEGO bricks by artist Nathan Sawaya. Another adventure that is a popular event is the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival that is celebrating their 22nd year. You can explore the culinary world, traveling from country to country without the need of passports or airline miles. As one of America’s top food festivals, it is one not to miss this year. We’re honored to present feature stories from the Heartland of a Winter Haven couple Nando & Sally Castillo that share their lovebird story and unique fashion ideas that turned into a huge growing business. Also there is a story about Roy & Wendy Petteway, “Between the Beaches”. This is a story of a Florida ranching family that helps show culinary professionals where our Angus beef comes from. Relationships remain the core of what makes the beef world go round and it’s importance for consumers to understand the modern beef production. I would like to say a Special Thank You to my creative designer Bridgette Waldau who has designed Heartland LIVING for you from the beginning. Her amazing talent has won the magazine awards again this year from the Florida Magazine Association. Ingredients: 16 oz box Rotini Pasta 1 lb Salami chopped 2-16 oz pkgs mozzarella/diced 12 oz jar banana peppers (we only used 1/2 of a jar) 12 oz Feta cheese Calamata Olives-pitted Italian dressing & Balsamic Vinaigrette (to taste) Everglades Original Seasoning (to taste)

graphic and fine artist for over 30 years. She received her A.A. from the Ft. Lauderdale Institute of Art and a Bachelor of Fine Art degree from Stetson University. She moved to Okeechobee in 1994 where she opened her art studio. Bridgette has been creative director for several publications, working with Heartland Publications & Marketing as art director since 2011, winning four Florida Magazine Charlie Awards in 2015. She is arts and culture director of Okeechobee Main Street (12 years) and member of the Chamber of Commerce of Okeechobee County. Bridgette is married to James Waldau, a retired firefighter from the City of Hialeah.

a military family, has lived overseas but did most of her growing up in Arcadia. After meeting and marrying Mike Prescott, she moved to Wauchula in 1979 and now calls it her home. She and Mike raised their three children there and now are reaping the benefits of their labor with six sweet, beautiful and perfect grandchildren. Her cooking style is eclectic and best described as “Southern comfort cuisine”. Her greatest joy comes from three things: her faith, loving on her family, and getting in the kitchen and “whipping” up something good.

But what about sculptures made out of a popular children’s building toy? Downtown Tampa is currently home to a one-of-a-kind art exhibition featuring awe-inspiring, life-sized sculptures made entirely out of LEGO bricks. Artist Nathan Sawaya’s global touring exhibition The Art of the Brick can be seen at 802 East Whiting Street from June 23 through September 4. The event is entirely free thanks to the Vinik Family Foundation, who brought the installation to the community.

awaya is the first artist ever to bring LEGO into the art world as a medium. He uses the same colorful, plastic LEGO bricks that we all grew up with to create life-sized human figures, thought-provoking and playful scenes, and even re-creations of famous artwork.
Included in the exhibition are LEGO renderings of Rodin’s The Thinker, Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Munch’s The Scream and Wood’s American Gothic. Guests will also be wowed by the Easter Island head and the 20-foot long T-rex skeleton Dinosaur, the largest structure Sawaya has ever built which incorporated a whopping 80,020 bricks.

he Art of the Brick was rated by CNN as one of the world’s “Must See Exhibitions,” and Sawaya has received numerous awards and honors for his artwork and cultural achievements. He is the author of two bestselling books, is the first person to ever become both a LEGO Master Builder and a LEGO Certified Professional, and has been a speaker at TEDx, Google, Yahoo! and numerous universities. His work combines the whimsical with the profound, the childlike with the complex. Conde Nast Traveler commented, “Art of the Brick is pretty much blowing our minds . . .”

ut Sawaya wasn’t always a professional artist. In his first life he was a New York City corporate lawyer, but in his words, “I quickly came to realize I was more comfortable sitting on the floor creating sculptures than I was sitting in a boardroom negotiating contracts.” While he used to end a day of work with some sort of creative endeavor, such as drawing, he eventually transitioned to LEGOs and then left the world of law altogether to be a full-time LEGO artist. Although, like the rest of us, Sawaya played with LEGOs as a child, he exhibited advanced skills early on. Sawaya explained, “At an early age I wanted to get a dog. My parents said, ‘You’re not getting a dog.’ So I built my own life-sized LEGO dog.”

is grown-up LEGO artwork began in 2002. Sawaya begins each piece with a sketch. Then he starts to build. No special LEGO pieces are designed for the artist-- he uses the same bright, colorful bricks available in stores across the country. While it seems his sculptures would be limited by the right angles of the bricks, from a distance those right angles can be used to create graceful curves, including the smooth forms of the human body. His Los Angeles studio holds over 6 million bricks just waiting to be incorporated into a masterpiece. Sawaya also glues the LEGO pieces together as he works so the sculptures don’t come apart as they travel from city to city and across the globe. That means if he makes a mistake, it takes a hammer and chisel (and not just a butter knife) to fix the problem.

That can make for slow going at times. A life-sized human form sculpture takes between two to four weeks to complete and uses about 15,000 bricks. His inspiration comes from many places, including other art exhibitions, the places he visits and the people he meets. His favorite piece is “the next one I’ll create.” Sawaya has stated that one of the reasons he prefers this medium is its accessibility. “When people go to museums and see a sculpture made out of marble, they appreciate it, but it’s very doubtful that they will go home and have a slab of marble they can chip away at, but people do have LEGO.”

“I want to elevate this simple plaything to a place it has never been before and to inspire others to make their own art,” Sawaya added. He called it the “democratizing” of art. Accessibility to art is a passion of Sawaya’s, and he is founder of Art Revolution, a movement to bring art into the forefront of people’s lives to make them “smarter, healthier and ultimately happier.” His belief is that “art is not optional.”

awaya expressed thanks to Jeff and Penny Vinik of the Vinik Family Foundation for sharing his vision of making art accessible by offering the Art of the Brick free to the public in Tampa Bay. This is the second art installment brought to the community by the Viniks.
“We want families to come here and enjoy this,” said Jeff, adding that he hopes that the exhibit not only inspires and stretches people’s minds when it comes to art, but also provides a place where families can come and simply be together and have fun. LEGO is “a unique and universal medium” that appeals to all ages, Penny added. “Art is very much a part of our lives and our children’s lives. We wanted it to be a part of everyone’s lives,” she said. As a thank you to the Vinik’s, Sawaya is leaving behind a permanent art piece specifically designed for Tampa Bay. Entitled Zeus, the commissioned piece is based on the Greek God of the sky and thunder and was inspired by Tampa’s reputation for frequent storms and lightning strikes. Zeus will remain in Tampa after the exhibit closes on September 4th. The Art of the Brick has visited more than 80 cities worldwide and has been exhibited on every continent except Antarctica. The installation in Tampa is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to p.m. No tickets are necessary. It is accompanied by an interactive Brick Yard where guests of all ages are invited to explore their own creativity. Parking is available in the downtown Tampa parking lots. Penny encouraged everyone to come out and view the free exhibit: “Come on down. Bring all of your family members. For the 22nd year, Disney World will be showcasing the flavors and thrills from countries around the world while tickling your senses with music, workshops, and celebrity guests from August 31 thru November 13. The Epcot International Food & Wine Festival started 22 years ago with the hope of sharing the tastes of the world in one spectacular event. It has been such a success that since the 30-day festival in 1996, it has grown into a record 75 daylong culinary extravaganza! As one of the America’s top food festivals, it is not one to miss. „

Carrying the theme of the 35th anniversary of Epcot, the festival will feature 35 global food and wine marketplaces including new countries and the return of India and Spain. All who visit the park’s World Showcase will savor delicious bites and drinks. Guest will have the opportunity to meet celebrity chefs, experience hands-on workshops and enjoy the 225 concerts. The 35 marketplaces will offer appetizer sized food, wine, and beer. Prices range from $3 - $8 of affordable eats around the world, biting into the world’s most delicious creations. Stop by the Festival Information booth for a map, event schedule, and a Festival Passport. The passport is a fun way to experience each destination, getting a marketplace sticker from each location.

New in 2017 Each year, Disney World strives to bring the latest and newest trends to the Food & Wine Festival. This year 5 brand new marketplace destinations will be available to experience. Active Eats, featuring loaded mac and cheese with bacon and other delicious options, and Flavor with Fire, experimenting how fire and heat can add flavor, are new booths to explore. Also new this year are Coastal Eats, foods from the oceans of the world, and Light Lab, a fresh new approach to bubbly drink concoctions. Mix It, Make It, Celebrate It! is back! Debuting at last year’s festival, this crowd favorite is back with new opportunities to meet visiting chefs, bakers, and mixologists with hands-on workshops. I
t began with a misunderstanding. He said one thing she heard another. Well, actually, it wasn't a misunderstanding so much as it was pronunciation. It started in April of 2007 when Nando Del Castillo, who was living in New York City, working as a model, met Sally Ellis (now Del Castillo), a fashion designer and merchandiser, while both were on a photo shoot in the middle of Pennsylvania. It was the start of a whirlwind courtship that would culminate in a marriage proposal several months later. „

It also was not anything Sally had even considered at this point in her life and her career. From an early age, Sally knew what she wanted to do with her life. “I began designing clothes at five years old,” she said. At age 11 she entered a competition in which she had to construct a building using LEGOs and other media. Her entry was such that she won the competition, as well as made a deeper impression upon the judges. “They asked me to design the T-shirts for the contest the next year.” It was her first paying job. Several years later and fresh out of Kent State University, where she earned her bachelor degree in fashion merchandising, Cleveland-based haberdasher Tom James hired her. “I landed my dream job,” she said. Soon after, she was assigned as the assistant to the president of merchandising for the photo shoot that eventually would introduce Nando and Sally to one another. It started with a phone call. She did not make a good first impression. Heartland LIVING August September 2017

“She had no idea of the real world of modeling,” said Nando. On top of that, he found her attitude somewhat “high handed.” He came away from that conversation with an image of her. “I thought she was some middle-aged hag.” Come the first day of the modeling assignment the two met for the first time. “I was shocked. My mouth just dropped,” he said. “Oh my, she's gorgeous.” Needless to say, he was smitten and every opportunity he had to be with her he was.

fter a morning shoot one of the days of the weeklong modeling assignment, she was making soup from scratch to have for lunch. To this day she believes it foretold their future together. “I asked, would you like some soup,” she said. “Here she was, all professional, making soup from scratch and asking if I'd like to have some soup,” he said. “And all I could say was ask what kind.” “I told him it was Italian wedding soup,” she said. After the assignment was completed, they went their separate ways. However, he kept in contact and a short while later he called to say he was going to be in Cleveland on a modeling assignment and asked to see her. They spent all the next day together.

Looking back now, Sally laughs over how it all unfolded. “I was not looking for a boyfriend or marriage,” she said. “I was looking to be in New York City and travel the world.” Instead, weeks later, she accompanied Nando to Winter Haven, where his mom lived and operated Rancho Del Castillo. Part of the trip was for business purposes, to scout sites in Central Florida for future photo shoots. She was surprised to discover Winter Haven was not a beach community. She also discovered something else about the city, the spelling of it. “Seeing the sign as we arrived, I said, oh my gosh, there's a 't’. It was not Winner Haven, it was, in fact, Winter Haven. I just couldn't believe it,” she said. “Yeah, but that's not how we even say it,” said Nando in defense as why the “t” is almost silent.

rom that moment forward it became, at first, their private joke, and one that always brought a laugh, chuckle or smile. But it grew from there and led to the establishment of an apparel line that has since expanded: Winner Haven Apparel – Fresh Squeezed Apparel for the “863” & Beyond. They said the name of the brand is lovingly tongue-in-cheek and an outgrowth of that misunderstanding. The clothing bears the initial misunderstood word: ‘Winner Haven’. Others include ‘Poke County’ and ‘Gator Done’. Decals bear an ersatz logo, ‘City of Winner Haven, Florida’ as well as some with the proper vintage seals.

The most common initial reaction, they said when people first encounter the clothing and/or decals, is a look of puzzlement, but one that does not last very long.

“It's like a light,” said Nando. “Their eyes light up and they say, 'I get it’.” It is, both agree, a lifestyle brand with a specific purpose and it has led to the addition and expansion of another clothing line: Up-cycled Blue Collar Work Shirts, which contain its own art and logos on the back. “These were real work shirts,” said Nando, who professes a love for history. “They were actually worked in, so you will notice the occasional stains and imperfections.” “That is part of the character and shows the history of each one-of-a-kind shirt,” said Sally. “We wear these for work, play and anything in-between.” The work shirts attracted the eye of the owner of Andy Thornal, a retail establishment in Winter Haven renown for sporting goods, primarily hunting and fishing. “Ken, who's the owner, said, 'I like your stuff,'” said Nando. “It's like nothing he's ever

They do more than just make the T-shirts. They wear the shirts in public. “When people from other communities see this, they ask 'Will you please make us a shirt,'” she added. “I've had people literally buy the shirt off my back,” said Nando. It also is something Nando and Sally clearly understand and identify with: a thing called heritage. “It's the epitome of a lifestyle brand,” said Nando. “This is how we literally live our life.” Time and again the two emphasized the importance of local, local, local. “Our lifestyle brand is based on embracing the town, its people and activities,” said Sally. “It's inspired by our surroundings and, literally, what we do on a daily basis.”

hat the couple does on a daily basis --- in addition to often finishing one another's sentences --- covers a wide range of activities. For starters, they help Nando's mother, Janet Del Castillo, run Rancho Del Castillo, a thoroughbred race horse training facility that has been in operation since 1984. In addition, they are still involved in the professional modeling scene, as well as being actors and filmmakers. They are currently learning and absorbing everything they can about that segment of the entertainment industry. “Our ultimate goal is to be producers,” she said.

I
n addition to their goods being sold in Winter Haven (and neighboring Auburndale), a clothing store in Brooklyn, New York wishes to vend the shirts, plus negotiations are underway with a major nationwide retailer (that cannot be identified due to conditions and agreements of confidentiality). Discussions are also underway with a representative in Paris who wishes to distribute their apparel and line of other goods. Most recently they inked a contract with LEGOLAND and are developing a line of T-shirts for the Winter Haven attraction. The overriding aspect to all this, both said, is that their primary target market is the one they are part of, which Sally calls the “boomerang.� These are the people of hers and Nando's generation. Those who left their hometowns, lured originally by the siren call of the cities, and who now after having tasted the bright lights, are returning to their roots. A number of them coming back to raise their own families, as well as embark upon new ventures and careers to give back to the community that gave them their foundation. an you believe a new school year is already almost here? I know most people dread the end of summer, but it is a very important time of the year as we prepare our kids for a new school year. Parents have more control over what kids eat at lunchtime than at any other meal, so it’s good to know how to make healthy choices when it comes to packing school lunches. Bad food choices in grade school can escalate into unhealthy eating habits by middle and high school that are hard to break so now is the time to take control of your child’s nutrition by making it delicious and fun! Here are a few tips and tricks on how to pack the best lunch for your kiddos to optimize their focus and energy throughout the day.

ealthy Wraps: Instead of the same old boring PB&J, make different options using wraps with whole wheat tortillas. Fill them with a variety of choices such as lunchmeats and cheeses, peanut butter, banana and honey or leftover meats from the previous night’s dinner. Choosing whole grain products is necessary to maintain a healthy digestive system, and makes you feel full longer, limiting the urge to snack. Munchables: Instead of the processed meats and cheeses found in the kid-coveted Lunchables, make your own which is easier on their bellies and your budget. Buy normal sizes of cheese, salami, ham and whole grain crackers; slice them into the smaller size and stack them in a Tupperware. Voila, mom-made Lunchables are Munchables. Fruit and Veggies: Make sure and pack one fresh fruit or veggie every day. A few kid friendly favorites are yogurt smoothies or other yogurt cups (make sure to look for organic products not the sugar filled brands) baby carrots, sliced apples (soak for 10 minutes in pineapple juice so they don’t go brown), homemade pasta salad, sliced oranges, celery sticks, grapes, banana cantaloupe or other seasonal fruit and veggies. If your kid isn’t a great veggie eater, add a tasty dip alongside.

airy: Include milk, cheese or yogurt to add much-needed calcium, protein and vitamin D to the lunch. The intake of dairy products is especially important to bone health during childhood and adolescence, when bone mass is being built. Always make sure the lunch box is properly cooled. Perishable items need to be kept chilled to reduce risk of foodborne illness. Insulated, soft-sided lunch totes are best for keeping perishable foods chilled. A cold source, such as a small frozen gel pack or frozen juice box, should be packed with perishable foods. Water and Juices: Water is best but gets a little boring at times as we know. Instead of sending water to drink at lunch every day, mix in some juice boxes every now and then. There are a few great brands now that offer either organic or 100% juice options. Many boxed juices contain little juice and are a major source of sugar so it’s very important to read the label so we don’t set them up for a sugar crash later in the day. Have your kids help pack their lunches and talk to them about making healthy choices. It can be fun for them to learn about what is best for their body so they carry these healthy nutrition choices with them throughout their life when they move past the age that we can't pack their lunch and make food choices for them. With the obesity epidemic that faces society, it’s important to set a good example with diet and exercise so that eating healthy and taking care of your body is a way of life. Most importantly, don’t forget to pack a sweet note of love and encouragement, it’s sure to send them back to class with a full heart and a full belly.

As it pertains to consumers understanding the ins and outs of modern beef production, perhaps the most important is that between rancher and chef. Transparency, history – all things the consumer looks for when selecting a meal. “Where did it come from?” and “Whose hands prepared it?” leave questions best answered by those who live it.

hrough a combined partnership with the Certified Angus Beef ® brand and Sysco South Florida, Petteway Citrus & Cattle made this goal a priority. The Zolfo Springs ranch recently hosted 41 culinary professionals to participate in a tour that offered first-hand exposure to Florida’s beef industry and the Angus breed. Time spent in the pasture allowed the food players a greater understanding of what takes place prior to a steak being prepared and served in one of their establishments. Peter Vauthy, Certified Angus Beef ® brand ambassador and executive chef at Miami’s RED, The Steakhouse, says bringing the two ends of the production spectrum together is an on-target strategy. “There’s a trend where people want to hear a story behind a product,” Vauthy says. “I like to know that I have the ability to track something back to the ranch, that I have a connection with the people involved in putting the steaks on my table.”

o further solidify that connection as well as engage a greater audience, Roy Petteway has spoken to chefs and culinary artists at events around the state including the Sysco South Florida Market Expo in Fort Lauderdale, The Evening of Red at TPC Sawgrass, and numerous events in between. Usually he is taking part in a panel that included a presentation and a question and answer session. Petteway is able to shed light on the realities of beef production in the Sunshine State and speaks of the success of the Angus breed. “Perhaps there’s a lot of people who think there’s beaches on one side and beaches on the other and nothing in the middle except Disney World,” Petteway says. “I think there are people who forget that there is a great deal of land between the two sides of the state that produces a substantial amount of agriculture in its heartland.”

o a crowd of more than 1,000 restaurateurs who made their way to a 2014 Sysco South Florida food show, getting to personally see an Angus bull made this concept a reality, and ultimately led to the events that followed. The executive team for the Certified Angus Beef ® brand’s largest distributor in the state was looking for something special to tie its Sysco South Florida farm-to-table story together and retired show bull, PCC Osceola 0622, better known as “JD”, was the piece that made the puzzle complete. The show stealer helped chefs, restaurant owners and operators later tell the beef story to their interested customers. Food show guests not only got to meet JD but also were able to spend time with the Petteway family, ask questions and sample CAB product.

Ingredients Mango Salsa 3/4 cups diced peeled mango - about 2 mangoes (pineapple can be substituted or mixed together)
1/4 cup diced red onion 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro Lime Crema 1/2 cup reduced-fat mayonnaise 1/2 cup fresh cilantro leaves 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice 1/2 ripe peeled avocado

Tacos 1 pound Mahi Mahi 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Cooking spray 8 (6-inch) corn tortillas 2 cups shredded red cabbage
Preparation Mango Salsa Combine first 3 ingredients in a bowl. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. Lime Crema Place mayonnaise and next 3 ingredients (through avocado) in a food processor; process until smooth. Cover and refrigerate up to 2 days. Tacos Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Sprinkle fish with salt and pepper. Place fish on grill rack coated with cooking spray; cook 5 minutes on each side or until fish flakes easily when tested with a fork. Remove from grill; break into chunks with a fork. While fish cooks, warm tortillas by wrapping in foil and placing in indirect heat on the grill. Spoon 3 ounces fish, 1/4 cup salsa, 1 1/2 tablespoons crema, and 1/4 cup cabbage onto each tortilla; fold in half and enjoy!

Sunset Margarita Ingredients 1/3 cup tequila 1/3 cup triple sec 3 tablespoons orange juice 2 tablespoons lime juice 4 tablespoons pomegranate juice 2 twists fresh lime peel How to Make It Put about 1 cup ice cubes in a pitcher. Pour in tequila, triple sec, orange juice, and lime juice. Stir well and divide between two cocktail glasses. Using the back of a large spoon, carefully pour 2 tbsp. pomegranate juice down the inner side of each glass. Garnish each with fresh lime peel, crushed slightly just before adding.

BAHAMIAN GUAVA DUFF Dough 4 cups flour 1 cup sugar (optional) 3 t. Baking Powder 1 t. salt ¾ Crisco Shortening ¾ cup milk 1 egg beaten • Combine dry ingredients, cut in shortening. Gradually add milk and beaten egg until dough can be handled. Roll out dough on floured surface. (Note: can divide dough)

Filling • 2-3 cups fresh pureed guavas (divided) or thinly sliced guava paste or Guava preserves • Spread over dough and roll (jellyroll). Wrap guava dough roll in heavy duty aluminum foil several times tightly. Pinch ends to make waterproof. Place foil wrapped dough in double boiler (or make own steamer). Steam the guava dough gently for one hour. • Remove dough, pat dry, unwrap. Slice and serve with Sauce.
Sauce 1 cup pureed guavas 2 sticks butter 2 Tbsp. Vanilla 1/4 cup sugar (or 1/4 cup Brandy) 1-14 oz. sweetened condensed milk • Combine sauce ingredients in saucepan and gently simmer until combined.

CHICKEN & SAUSAGE CACCIATORE (SLOW COOKER) 3 boneless, Skinless Chicken breasts 1 pkg Chicken Sausage (Smoked) 1 jar Spaghetti Sauce 1 small can tomato paste 2 pkgs. fresh mushrooms (clean & quarter)
1 medium onion, sliced 1 green bell pepper, strips 3 Tbsp. minced garlic 2 Tbsp. dried oregano Salt & Pepper
Place all ingredients in slow cooker. Cook on low until chicken is tender, 6 to 8 hours. Remove chicken breasts and cut into bitesize pieces. Serve over pasta
OLIVE GARLIC BREAD 1 loaf Italian or French bread 8 oz. green (w/pimientos) olives 8 oz. Black olives 4 oz. Kalamata olives 2 green onions, sliced 1 Tbsp. minced garlic 1 stick butter (softened) ½ c. mayonnaise 2 cups white cheese • Slice bread (in half-two long loaves). Place next six ingredients in food processor. Coarse chop. Mix cheese in by hand. Spread over bread. • Place bread on foil lined pan and bake (350 degrees) for 15-20 minutes until bubbly and slightly browned.

DeSoto2017County All Stars AAA Championship “every strike brings me closer to the next home run.” Babe Ruth
By Randa Kellogg Photography by Traci Newlin f you were standing near Mere Sports Complex in Mariana, FL on July 20th, you would have known without a doubt that history was being made. There was no mistaking the sound of pure elation that floated through the breeze along with the overwhelming cheers of the DeSoto County Youth Baseball league’s players and parents. On this day, for the first time in Dixie Youth Baseball history a State Championship belonged to DeSoto County.

This journey began in Bartow with two District 7 Championships won by both Heartland the Minor team and Ozone team. The Minor team was managed by Matt LIVING Evans with the assistance of Brian White and Wes Roe and was made up of August twelve boys ages 10 and under: Colsen Loughren, Canian Crumady, Daylon September 2017 White, Dalton Hill, Parker Evans, Evan Roe, Matthew Mason, Jett Kellogg, Abel Nedley, Gavin Pelham, Carlos Morales and Lincoln Phillips.

he Ozone team was managed by Matt Roberts with the assistance of Eric Shea and Matt Warram and the players all ages 12 and under was: Joseph Baker, Hunter Roberts, Evan Prescott, Jace Kellogg, Austin Evans, Trey Tanner, Gavin Devries, Patton Mercer, Porter Nedley, Andrew Shea, Julian Cendajas and Anthony Nania.

After the dust settled in Bartow and both DeSoto teams were crowned District 7 Champions, a commitment to the Dixie Youth Baseball Florida State Playoffs became a reality. Not only did the coaches, players, and parents do their part in the quest for a state championship, but the great community that makes up DeSoto County also stepped up to the plate and made it possible for these young athletes to leave their mark in history. Numerous sponsorships and donations were made in support of their journey to north Florida. At the State Tournament in Marianna, the Ozone team played hard and represented DeSoto County in a manner that would have made everyone proud. Unfortunately, as the game of baseball often goes, they did not come out on top, but their memories and

the lessons learned in this experience will be something that they carry with them for the rest of their lives. The Minor team on the other hand, did come out as the victor. They went through their first four games undefeated and an obvious contender for a state championship. They lost one game by only one run, but came right back only two hours later for a solid victory against the same team winning 11 to 1. Throughout this tournament key plays were made by all. The defense was held together by great coaching and just plain ole’ good baseball boys. Four pitchers; Evan Roe, Dalton Hill, Matthew Mason and Parker Evans; made up the bulk of their bull pen to be a force that most teams at this level had never seen. Matthew Mason pitched the championship game throwing 44 pitches with only 11 balls, the rest being strikes and didn’t allow a single earned run. Colsen Loughren was a rock behind the plate in his hot catching gear all weekend offering his experience to give the team the confidence to never doubt they were true contenders. A home run early in the tournament by Evan Roe was followed later by two timely home runs by Colsen Loughren in the championship game. Without question, each player on this team fought hard for a well-deserved victory. or those of you that do not follow baseball, or better yet, youth baseball, there are so many amazing things about this particular experience that you should know. You need to know that these coaches that devoted their time to these boys were not paid and still had a "real" job that they had to do in order to maintain their lives, yet they still made practice a priority. You need to know that the families of the players did what had to be done in order to get them to practices and to games no matter what life was throwing at them. After one of the Minor’s games an umpire actually went out of his way to comment that he would want his grandson to play on a team like DeSoto and not because they won, but because of the respect and obvious love of not only the game, but of each other they so obviously showed. You should know that when nails were

Photography by Sharon Cannon The second annual Art & Wine Walk on Park Street, presented by Okeechobee Main Street's Arts & Culture Committee, was held on July 15 in Okeechobee. This casual summer experience took guests through ten participating businesses, all located on Park Street in downtown Okeechobee. Each business featured an artist showcasing their artwork. Businesses offered guests wine tasting, appetizers and promotional offers. Artists display their artwork, as well as on-site demonstrations. Great wine, food, art and smiles were all around The Hope Chest set up a beautiful table of food and wine, graced by featured at this popular event, promoting the arts. Oaks at Avon OPEN HOUSE
The Oaks at Avon welcomed VIP guest to tour their beautifully renovated facility the evening of July 14 in Avon Park. Guests were greeted by the friendly staff after walking the red carpet and offered sparkling juice and chocolate covered strawberries. They were then invited to tour the newly renovated facility where they were serenaded by the beautiful melodies of a harpist and then enjoyed hors d'oeuvres by Pink Pineapple Catering. The B.R.A.T. Club of Okeechobee brings families together at their popular annual Mother-Son and Father-Daughter events. On May 13 B.R.A.T. hosted their Mother-Son “Superhero” event for kids of all ages where moms and sons enjoyed dressing up as their favorite superhero. The event takes place each year around Mother’s Day. Soon after on June 17, the annual Father-Daughter dance took place. Daughters, dressed in beautiful gowns, celebrated with their Dads on the night before Father’s Day. Activities at both events included playing hungry hippo, musical chairs, and other games. Also at the events is music, dancing and of course food. Hand printed keepsakes are also created and plenty of photos are taken that families can take home for mementos.

These fun events create many memories for everyone who attends and will not soon be forgotten. The B.R.A.T. (Building Relationships Among Teens) Club mission is to build relationships amongst our youth by providing positive, safe, fun-filled activities in the community. (Photos provided by The B.R.A.T. NU-HOPE Speakeasy Soirée Photography by Mat Delaney
A fun and energetic crowd gathered at the Jack Stroup Civic Center on July 14 clad in their best Roaring ‘20s attire for the 2nd Annual NU-HOPE Speakeasy Soiree. This is a signature fundraiser for NU-HOPE as the funds raised help to provide vital services for senior and their caregivers in Highlands and Hardee Counties. The dance floor was active all night with the 12-piece Golden Era Band followed by a DJ who played everyone’s favorite dancing tunes. Guests were greeted by a champagne fountain, enjoyed custom moonshine, food by Pink Pineapple Catering and a beautiful dessert table by Lisa Thomas, Cakes ‘n More. To round out the night, gaming tables were available to try your luck at Black Jack, Roulette, and Craps. It was a fun night for a great cause!
