letter fromTHE PUBLISHER Even though we had some lingering cooler weather this year
spring is finally here. This means time to open up the windows and soak up the sunshine, which is my favorite pastime. I already have beach plans in the works for a much needed little get away. Hope you have some springtime plans as well. I love April because of the longer days and now it looks like we get to keep them year round. I also love all the beautiful blooming flowers I’ve been seeing in gardens and porches. Inside this issue we’ve added a little help to get you started planting your garden whether you have room for a landscaped one or in pots on your porches. How nice to take a break and sit outside and enjoy the beautiful blaze of colors you chose for your flower garden. Spring is also the beginning of the busy season, with a ton of exciting events to look forward to. When we went through all the upcoming events in the Heartland we thought we were going to have to add a page. Take a look and plan something with the warmer weather to enjoy with family and/or friends. A cool event coming to Sebring in April is the inaugural Sebring Soda Festival in Downtown Sebring. This event is held only in one other city in the USA. The Sebring Chamber of Commerce is presenting this event and CEO Liz Barber shared this with me “I'm really excited for the first ever Sebring Soda Festival, and it will be a very cute, family-friendly nostalgic-style 1950's themed event, and I think it will complement the downtown area very nicely”. We are honored to have Candice Franqui, not only grace our cover, but share her dreams. Since she was 15 years old, Candice wanted to become a model. As Candice works hard to follows her dream, she is also an honor roll student at Sebring High School, keeping her academics up. Candice feels a dream is in reach if you try, work hard, stay smart and remember who you are. I’m so happy when I reached out to friends Scott and Terri Crutchfield and that they said yes to share their gorgeous home and where La La Land was created. Terri’s passion came from one little piglet, named Precious, she bought Scott as a birthday present and the rest is history. That passion has turned into TLC Therapy Hooves. When I was at their home for the photo shoot with photographer Caroline Maxcy Fox, I witnesses pure joy coming from their hearts as they watched delighted nursing home residents, who had come to visit and interact with the exotic animals at La La Land. I know you are going to enjoy their story because it comes from their heart. I hope you all enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed creating it for you. As always we want to thank our advertisers for all your support and our readers for picking up Heartland Living and sharing your thoughts and complements. I encourage you to dine, shop and support local small businesses. When you do, you help the economy in our Heartland Communities. God Bless, Heartland LIVING April May 2018

aunders Law Group is a civil trial practice with two lawyers, each of whom is Board Certified by the Florida Bar as experts in civil trial matters and specialists in business litigation. Together, Tom Saunders and K.C. Bouchillon have more than sixty (60) years of combined trial experience in personal injury, wrongful death, commercial litigation, business litigation and insurance claims. They have conducted trials across Central Florida before juries and judges alike. RAFAEL PACHECO I am a Pisces and was born on the island of Puerto Rico. My dog thinks I am crazy for locking the door so many times in 10 seconds and my cats think I am made of catnip. Everything I wear is black, gray or blue. If I put on something colorful I must have been in a hurry. Photography is how I have let my artistic visions come to life since the early 90’s. Patience, kindness, sharing, sacrifice, love and not to judge I saw my mother practice these and they stayed within me. We are collective energy and all from the same Source. I don’t see the world through my eyes. I see it through my soul.

She and Mike raised their three children there and now are reaping the benefits of their labor with six sweet, beautiful and perfect grandchildren. CAROLINE MAXCY FOX runs a full service fine art lifestyle photography business based in the heart of Florida. After achieving her Bachelors in Studio Art from Florida State University where she focused on Design and Photography, she practiced in the field of design for six years before pursuing her Masters in Graphic Design at North Carolina State University in 2010. It was through this journey that she honed her artistic craft and developed a "way of seeing" that fuels her photography today. Candice FRANQUI LIVING HER DREAM
By Katy Fassler Photography by Caroline Maxcy Fox
Ask any child their dreams for the future and you will be given an abundance of answers. From veterinarian to police officer, princess, NBA player, famous actors and even President of the United States, children do not see the impossible and many make it their mission to leap over any hurdle to reach their aspiration. As adults, we often see these as cute, childlike fantasies, and are waiting for reality to settle. Heartland LIVING April May 2018

andice Franqui, a senior at Sebring High School, is
showing the world that dreams really do come true. After being told repeatedly by friends, family, and complete strangers that she should be a model, Candice thought she would see for herself. At 15, and standing at 5’10’’, modeling was a fantasy but with the help of her mom, they together created a portfolio and sent it off to multiple agencies hoping to get affirmation of her goals. She was shocked at the results. Multiple agencies replied hoping to sign her. She had the opportunity to hand pick which agency she would sign. Through long talks and consideration, the pair chose to go with Ford Models in Miami. She is currently signed with Next/Miami and Ford Worldwide. Candice has been featured in many magazines such as Seventeen, Bricknell, Ocean Drive as well as countless clothing catalogues, both in print and online. She has modeled for Stages, Bealls, Dillards, as well as Ralph Loren and Louis Vuitton. She has been featured in magazines in Germany and France as well as a commercial. Candice also walked in Miami Fashion Week and auditioned for a Whitney Houston biopic. While she didn’t get the part in the film, it opened her eyes to all the incredible opportunities possible. In March Candice turned 18, a poignant moment in every young man and woman’s life, and now can fully experience all the modeling world can offer. After graduation, all focus, time, and energy can be devoted to making her a name no one will ever forget. Success came relatively quickly but was not always easy. Candice struggled with balancing having a job and being a student. “The past few years it was hard balancing school and my job. At first, I was either focusing too much on modeling and not on school or too much on school and not on modeling but as time went on, I learned I needed to balance them.” Candice has worked diligently to be a straight A student and is currently on the Honor Roll.

M
odeling has given Candice confidence she never had. “I am
a normal, hometown girl. I love to hang out with my family and friends, binge on Netflix, and try different cafes and new food. I hate working out! Modeling has helped me be more outgoing and meet new people. I want people to know I am a normal girl, what I do just isn’t the norm.” Candice was severely bullied in middle school and beginning years of high school. “I don’t know why. I don’t know if it was my height, or my skin color, or because I didn’t quite fit in or was outgoing.” Thankfully school administration was alerted and was able to diffuse the situation but it left scars on her self-confidence. “Bullying is a traumatic thing, especially at time when you’re young and learning to accept and love yourself as you are. Bullying is not cool. Over time, you get stronger and you learn to love yourself and not care what other people think.” Candice is passionate about stopping bullying, encourages those being hurt to not stay silent, and stands with those who bare the wounds from this type of abuse.

andice must also be very careful
with making new friends. As she is featured in more magazines and catalogues, more and more people are recognizing her face. Having to discern who truly wants to be her friend and who wants to ride the coat tails of her success makes her wary of new friends but also truly appreciate those who have been there all along. She desires close, meaningful relationships, but wants to guard her heart as well. „

he is humble, too. She doesn’t broadcast her latest shoots, or travel
plans, but aims to be treated as any other student in school. “Not many people know I am a model. People will see my picture in a magazine and say, ‘You’re a model!’ laughs Candice. While most students would want the world to know their success to boost their status, Candice wants to maintain her low-key, girl next-door image.

andice wishes to encourage everyone to never give up on
their dreams, to listen to that still, small voice that whispers, “You can do it!” and push yourself to try new things, work hard for what you want, and never, never give up. “To all the girls from small towns, if I can do it, so can you,” encourages Candice to the young ladies of the Heartland area, “I am just an average girl, just like you. I am from a small town, just like you. Work hard with what you have. This isn’t just a slogan that your parents use; you actually have to work for it. If I didn’t send those pictures, where would I be? You just have to try. There is no give up. There are going to be hard days but like the quote says, ‘If you work hard for what you want, you will get it.’”

TLC Therapy Hooves, a non-profit organization, exists to bring the “unconditional love of an exotic therapy animal”. Terri Lynn and her volunteers dress up the ponies, bunnies and more, for every holiday and season to bring a parade of delight through the halls of these facilities to bring a smile to the often-forgotten members of our community. It all began with a little pig that grew into 375lbs. Her name was Precious and she changed the lives of Terri Lynn, Scott, and their daughter Taylor Crutchfield forever. Precious was a tea cup piglet, the size of a soda can, Terri Lynn gave as a birthday gift to her husband. It was a bit of a running joke, but this pig won the hearts of everyone she met. Terri Lynn and her mother, Ann, began bringing Precious to local nursing homes to bring joy to its residents. A seed had been planted in the heart of Terri Lynn and it was quickly growing into a dream of serving her local community. „

Precious grew quickly and Terri Lynn and Scott realized that living in Golf Hammock might not be the most conducive place for a large pot belly pig. Working in real estate, a perfect property crossed Terri Lynn’s desk, which set everything in motion. Through renovations and the purchase of surrounding property, La La Land was born. Now home to ponies, goats, rabbits, pigs, chickens, llama, wallaby, kangaroo, zebra, a camel, and cow named Sherman. TLC Therapy Hooves has a home base to raise, care for, and even bring residents of local nursing homes to visit. “Our program runs from September through the beginning of May. We visit nursing homes and retirement communities and bring three ponies, our rabbit, and an exotic such as a wallaby or kangaroo or whatever we have available,” says Terri Lynn. “We spend about an hour there. We walk the halls, allow people to pet, ask questions, and if there is an area big enough, we will talk about each animal; their name, how old they are, and everything about them.”

“We even took the camel one time before she was too big!” adds Scott. The animals are dressed up with volunteer made costumes, Build a Bear shoes, and decorations for each season and holiday. Volunteers help make, dress, and parade the animals. The day before visits, volunteers help with “splish splash days” to bathe and prepare the animals for their day. They are also present for open houses and tours. Terri Lynn readily admits they could not operate TLC Therapy Hooves or La La Land without her volunteers.

In addition to the visits to care facilities, the Crutchfield’s open their property twice a year for tours. The open houses are available to the public. There are also tours specifically scheduled for the nursing and retirement homes to come visit free of charge. Private tours are also offered to visit all 50 acres and habitats. La La Land was named after one of its favorite residents, La La the camel. “La La came to us when she was 6 weeks old. We used a lot of bottles! She is going to be 3 in October. She is a dromedary, meaning one hump. She has a great personality!” La La is currently being trained to cush, meaning lie down, and walk with a halter. Terri Lynn travels every year to be trained in working with camels of all ages. In addition to the camel, there are 3 zebras at La La Land, 1 male and 2 females. Both females will be giving birth in May or June.

riving into northeastern Glades County, the landscape is familiar with Florida farmland, ranches and scrubs as far as the eye can see. There is a neighborhood of homes on acreages where nothing stands out as unusual until you get a glimpse of a palmetto thatched roof, then another and another. Chickee huts, palmetto thatch roofs over 4 post cypress log frames, are next to almost every home. You have entered the Brighton Seminole Reservation, one of six reservations that is home of proud Florida natives, the Seminole Tribe of Florida.„

The Florida Heartland is ripe with history of the Seminole Tribes. Today names of Florida counties and towns such as Okeechobee, Tallahassee, Miami, and Osceola roll off of our tongues without much thought about their origin. Seminoles are a part of Florida history that many take for granted. You can not understand the present without knowing the history of the Seminoles. The indigenous tribes’ struggles began with the Spanish explorers, brutally trying to remove the aboriginal Floridians from their land. Seminoles are descended from multiple tribes; the Muscogee, Calusa, Apalachicola, Mayaimi, Tocobaga, Arawak, Timucua and Tequesta. These tribes were at the mercy of the Spanish Conquistadors who “discovered”

Florida. The Conquistadors named the state Florida, and also gave names to the natives tribes. They called the indigenous people cimarrones meaning free people, eventually the name being anglicized to the Seminoles. The 19th century sent the Seminoles hiding into the marshlands of the Everglades, fighting three wars against the US government and trying to avoid displacement to the west and extermination. They survived the 20 years of conflict but barely, with only 300 tribe members surviving. They entered into the 20th century with peace treaties but were still treated as second class citizens. The tribe survived off the land, trading hides, selling traditional native crafts and as agricultural workers. The federal government passed a law in 1957 officially declaring the tribe as The Seminole Tribe of Florida. Today’s Seminole Indians want to keep their history alive and educate non-indians to the culture and traditions of their people. On a remarkably warm February weekend, the Brighton Field Day Festival did just that and delighted thousands of visitors with the food, arts, crafts and the culture of the Seminole Indians of Florida. The Field Day celebrated its 80th year showcasing the best of the Brighton Reservation residents and entertaining visitors with Native dancers, horse races, live music and alligator wrestling. The Brighton Reservation was established in the 1930’s, but many

Seminoles had to be convinced to live there, still wary of the government involvement in their lives. The Field Days began in 1938 as a simple event with relay races and a barbeque. It was a day for tribe members from different reservations to get together for fun and friendly competition. Today’s festival has transitioned to a grand event, including visiting tribes from all over the United States, a carnival and with opportunities to purchase beautiful Seminole made jewelry and crafts. Visitors might also come across a traditional hair styling competition or a native weapons demonstration. Wandering through the festival grounds, you find a cluster of chickee huts, the Seminole Indian Village. This area is an educational opportunity at the festival to see the traditional crafts and cooking techniques demonstrated by tribe members. Women elders, beautifully dressed in traditional Seminole clothing are seen crafting palmetto husk dolls, sewing, basket weaving and making traditional indian pumpkin bread. The smells and tastes of time-honored foods, sounds of Native drums and chants, along with vivid-colored clothing worn by festival goers and tribe members alike offered visitors an experience which felt like you participated in something important. It is tradition that you wanted to remember. Tribe member and a festival coordinator Amos Tiger planned it that way. “There is no way to pick a highlight of the weekend. It is all a highlight,” said Tiger. The Fred Smith Arena on the festival grounds hosted the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association rodeo

on Friday and Saturday with the Professional Bull Riders’ bull riding event on Sunday. Brighton Seminole Tribe members Marty Johns and Paul Bowers are co-owners of 5 Star Rodeo LLC, the stock contractors for the rodeo events. The rodeo captivated the audience on Saturday, opening with the Florida State University (FSU) Marching Chiefs performing the National Anthem. Tribe member Mackenzie Johns Bowers, spectacularly clad in red, white and blue traditional dress, rode in carrying Old Glory and circling the arena until the end of the anthem. The steadfast mascots of FSU, Chief Osceola and Renegade, ended the Marching Chiefs’ anthem performance by planting the burning spear in the middle of the arena, which delighted the crowd. The rodeo was all that was expected with the crowd cheering bull riders, counting down their 8-seconds ride and cringing at the bucking broncs throwing riders to the ground. Johns and Bowers pulled off this event with 61 bull riders, 38 saddle broncs and 32 bare backs at Saturday’s rodeo.

5 Star Rodeo continues the cattle tradition that the Seminoles have been involved in for over 500 years. The Tribe is currently the 12th largest cattle holder in the nation and 4th in the state of Florida. 5 Star Rodeo is looking towards the future, not only with the dream of their Seminole stock being entered into the National Finals Rodeo, but with inspiring future generations. They are proud of their heritage in the cattle industry. “We enjoy what we do as Native American stock contractors” said Johns. A smiling Paul Bowers added, “We want to lead by example and help others with what we have learned and help those young people who are interested in the future of stock and rodeo”. While many may not know much about the culture of the Seminole Tribe or their vast holdings of cattle, most have heard of the casinos that the reservations are famous for.

Marty Johns is also CEO of the Seminole Brighton Casino. Johns’ family history runs as deep as it gets in the Native American casino business. His father Josiah Johns started the Brighton Bingo Hall unofficially known as the “the Small Red Barn” in a 50 x 35 building originally intended as a hardware store and beauty parlor in 1980. The high stakes bingo hall was one of the first in the United States. This past January 30 the casino celebrated the recent addition of live action gaming tables, along side the already 400 Las Vegas style slot machines and high stakes bingo. The facility also boasts a restaurant and lounge in the 27,000 square foot facility.

Seminole Brighton Casino is one of seven casinos owned and operated by the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Marty Johns took over operation of the casino in 1986 at the age of 19 learning the business from the ground up. It is one of the largest employers in Glades County, with more than 200 employees. Johns says, “I will be here until I retire, but have no plans yet”. Johns’ future casino plans are to expand the facility and add a hotel to the grounds. The Seminole Brighton Casino has come a long way since the “Small Red Barn” days and its success is a testament to Johns’ obvious drive and determination. Brighton Seminole reservation is worth a visit. Whether you are visiting the casino or one of the many events or rodeos during the year, take the time to look around and talk to people. What you will find is that the Seminole Tribe of Florida are patriotic people who are proud of their history and humble about their growth. All Floridians could agree with Paul Bowers when he said “I am most proud to be a Floridian.”

IDEAS FOR PLANTING A
Flower Garden
IN THE HEART OF FLORIDA By Cindy Sebring Adams
Heartland LIVING April May 2018
80
W
hen springtime arrives in Florida in April, the Sunshine State becomes a blaze of various colors. Whether you're a beginning gardener or an old hand with two green thumbs, planting a flower garden doesn't have to be complicated, grueling work. Warm weather generally has arrived for several months, making spring growing a prime time for the blooming of many flowering species of plants. „
81
F
lorida gardeners have many choices in annuals and perennials to plant in their gardens for a burst of color that will last for months. Even novice gardeners will have success in building an attractive, eye-catching flower garden. Enjoy the growing season as you plant with an eye to the future, imagining a vast of color from different flower blooms as the season progresses. Flowers attract pollen-spreading bees, birds, and butterflies that add to the overall health of your garden or yard. A few basic planting ideas are all you need to get started, so let’s get started.
82
Landscape Garden
Once you select the right plants for your garden area you'll want to make sure you start out with a properly prepared plant bed. For best results, clear a section of your landscape for the bed by removing grass and weeds. According to Cornell University, 3 to 6 inches of organic material, such as compost, tilled into the garden before planting improves drainage and soil fertility. Fertilize your flowerbeds before you plant or at planting time with a controlled-release complete fertilizer. As I mentioned perennials, bulbs and annuals represent a permanent investment in the garden; so good soil pays off for these or any type of plants you are going to add to your garden. „
83
Gardening in Pots
You may not have the space, patience or time to take on a landscape garden, but anyone can master container gardening. It’s a cinch, all you need are planters, potting soil, some plants and you’re ready to go. It’s easy to see why gardening in pot ideas can be endless, so endless that you may need a few planter garden ideas to point you in the right direction. You can check out many places on the internet, like Google and Pinterest, for beautiful color ideas. You can enjoy non-stop color all season long; you'll also love shopping at your local garden shops for beautiful pots to adorn porches and patios. Hope we have inspired you to dirty your hands and spruce up your porch or patio with some pretty garden pots in no time.
Heartland LIVING April May 2018
84
Time to Plant
Some flowers don’t just survive; they thrive, in Florida’s warm spring and absolutely hot and humid summers. Look for some beautiful flowers to plant in your garden, or for gorgeous conversation-starters to showcase out in your beds, patio or in a window box. Make sure you select healthy plants to start out with; look for unblemished leaves, good green color, and lots of flower buds. Before taking the plants out of the containers, make sure you water the pots, then gently loosen and spread the roots of your plants out. Once they are in the ground, add mulch to help retain moisture and keep weeds down, no need for mulch if you are planting in pots. For your bed garden a border around your planting bed will help keep your grass from invading the area. Watering, even droughttolerant plants require regular watering when they’re first planted so they can establish a good root system. The rule of thumb is water new plants every other day the first week; every couple days for the next two weeks; and at least once a week for the next couple months. Of course not needed when God supplies us with rain.
Happy Gardening!

heartland SCENE Knotty Girl’s Fifth Anniversary & Inaugural Celebration Clay Shoot By Kristy Harris Photography by Elena Rodriquez When your non-profit organization name is, “Knotty Girl” you’re gonna turn some heads! With her rope and knot body, Knotty Girl is a visual representation of what breast cancer can feel like….round and hard like a KNOT! Her mission is to EDUCATE on the importance of monthly breast selfexams for the early detection of breast cancer. And turning heads is EXACTLY what she did on February 24th, 2018 for her fifth anniversary and first annual Celebration Clay Shoot at Quail Creek Plantation in Okeechobee sponsored by McKibben Powersport Honda of Winter Haven! This family friendly event was designed to reach out to women and men of all ages and share the Knotty Girl mission as breast cancer effects everyone, not just women! With shooting classes for men, women and juniors, four-some teams even included dads/daughters, moms/daughters and dads/sons! Shooters were able to participate in a miniclinic sponsored by the FSCA Honeybelles, silent auction, gun raffle, pink bird 50/50, raffle prizes and event a $5,000 Perfect Shot Challenge as well as enjoyed breakfast and lunch provided by The Smoke Shack of Lake Placid!

New to the event, "Pawcasso" painting area where pet's paw prints were turned into works of art
Okeechobee Main Street's Top of the Lake Art Fest & Taste of Okeechobee Photography by Sharon Cannon
Okeechobee Main Street’s 12th annual Top of the Lake Art Fest, featuring the Taste of Okeechobee, was held Feb. 10 and 11 in downtown Okeechobee. The two-day event showcased fine artists and craft artisans from all over the state, as well as local and student artists. This juried art show presented a host of awards to many talented artists. The art fest also included street painting artists, sand sculpture and a kid’s art zone. An emerging artist tent featured seven students showing and selling their art. Also a new event was added this year, the Puppy Parade on Park featuring “Pawcasso” pet paw print painting. The Taste of Okeechobee drew a crowd of over 300 and was a fun evening for all. With perfect weather, local restaurants showcased their specialties as tasters enjoyed all the flavors as they strolled along Park Street in downtown Okeechobee. The event also included downtown businesses who opened up their doors to serve the tasters wine and other beverages. Culinary chefs voted for the best taste and local tasters picked their "people's choice."

50th Annual Pioneer Park Days Photography by Tracy McCoy
Inside the small town of Zolfo Springs, FL from March 1st thru March 3rd 2018, a grand event occurred, the 50th annual Pioneer Park Days. Pioneer Park Days is one of the largest, and is the oldest antique tractor, steam engine and farm equipment shows in the southeast. Some of the highlights included over 200 exhibits of tractors, steam engines and farm equipment. In the flea market area there were 300 booths that sold items from old tools to arts and crafts. There were some great deals being made. Artifact collections of the 1800’s and eras were at the Cracker Trail Museum for all to view the history. It also included a wide range of pioneer household goods, farming implements, photographs, articles about Florida Cowboys & Indians and additional historical documents. Also around the museum was Pioneer Village where some generous donators displayed a 1914 Baldwin Locomotive Engine #3 (also known as the Loping Gopher), Along with C.A. Bryant Blacksmith Shop and the Hart Cabin with pieces of furniture inside built by Mr. Hart. Hometown guests and visitors enjoyed the weekend as well as the famous homemade Swamp Cabbage.

There is no doubt we are going to use Gilbert! -Mark Mayers (Real Life Children's Ranch)
