FINE 5 WE MET TIINA OLLESK, ONE OF THE FOUNDING MEMBERS OF FINE 5 DANCE THEATRE IN THE LUSH GARDEN OF KOHVICUM, ONE OF THE SWEETEST CAFES IN THE OLD TOWN OF TALLINN. THE OTHER HALF OF THE DANCE THEATRE IS RENÉ NÕMMIK, WHO JOINED US A BIT LATER. TIINA AND RENÉ ARE ALSO SHARING THEIR EXPERIENCE TO DANCE STUDENTS IN TALLINN UNIVERSITY. FINE 5 DANCE THEATRE IS A PIONEER OF ESTONIAN MODERN DANCE AND THEY STILL KEEP PLAYING THEMSELVES PERCEPTIBLE BY ANALYSING IN BODYWORK. FINE 5 IS THE LAUREATE OF SEVERAL INTERNATIONAL DANCE CONTESTS AND FESTIVALS. THE COMPANY HAS PERFORMED IN USA; ITALY, FRANCE, SWEDEN, CYPROS, FINLAND, POLAND, BALTIC STATES, RUSSIA AND BELORUSSIA. HEART: HERE IN THE GREEN GARDEN IT IS PROPER TO ASK ABOUT THE LINK BETWEEN DANCE AND FLORA. HOW DO BODIES GROW? TIINA OLLESK: DANCE OR CHOREOGRAPHER ITSELF IS LIKE A PLANT WHICH NEEDS TO HAVE ROOTS IN THE GROUND, IT NEEDS ENOUGH LIGHT, SPACE AND FOOD. IN THE HISTORY OF DANCE SOME TENDENCIES NEED MORE HELP FROM THE GARDENER AND OTHERS MIGHT FAIRLY EXIST WITHOUT IT. THERE ARE WAYS OF THINKING THAT ARE COMPARABLE WITH ROYAL HOUSEPLANTS AND ALSO THE ONES WHICH ARE LEFT OPENED, AS ORGANIC AS POSSIBLE. H: WHERE DOES THE CHOREOGRAPHY BEGIN? YOU BEGAN WITH CLASSICAL BALLET AND FOUND MODERN DANCE LATER. IS EVERYTHING FROM BALLET IN THE RECYCLE BIN OR IS SOMETHING VALUABLE STILL WITH YOU? T: TECHOLOGICAL AND SOCIETAL CHANGES HAVE QUITE DIRECTLY AFFECTED THE ATTITUDE AND PERSPECTIVES TOWARDS BODY. THERE WAS TIME WHEN DANCE WAS CONSIDERED ART WHEN IT WAS ARTIFICIAL, BUT NOWADAYS CHOREOGRAPHERS TRY TO FIND SOMETHING AS ORGANIC AS POSSIBLE. IN CONTEMPORARY ERA EVERYTHING ELITE IS VANISHING. IN THE SOVIET TIMES THE HIGHEST DANCE FORM WAS BALLET. THERE WAS A GREAT ASSORTMENT OF PEOPLE, BECAUSE EVERYBODY WANTED TO BECOME BALLET STARS. BACK THEN IT WAS NORMAL THAT YOU COULD CHOOSE ONE PERFECT BODY TYPE FOR THE ELITE ART. THESE DAYS IT IS DIFFERENT, BECAUSE WE HAVE TO CONSIDER THE MATERIAL WE ARE WORKING WITH AND WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE WE ARE. IT IS AN ILLUSION THAT HUMAN RESOURCES ARE ENDLESS, BECAUSE ENERGY CAN RUN DRY. SO WE WANT TO GET BACK TO OUR ESSENCE, BACK TO THE BONES. WE WANT TO CONSIDER THE FUNCTIONS OF MOVING BODY AND BUILD UP TRAINING SYSTEMS FROM THIS POINT. ONLY THEN YOU CAN WORK AS A CHOREOGRAPHER. IN THE CONTEXT OF ESTONIA THIS IS A NEW WAY OF THINKING. SOVIET COMPREHENSION WAS THAT THE HIGHER YOUR LEG RISES THE MORE RIGHT THE DANCING IS. SO PEOPLE THOUGHT IT WAS THE ONLY WAY TO PERFORM „SWAN LAKE“. BUT NOW, IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THOSE ANATOMICAL PREREQUISITIES AND YOUR BODY IS DIFFERENT,YOU CAN STILL INTERACT WITH BALLET.THIS IS ONLY IN OUR HEADS DO WE ACCEPT IT OR NOT. I THINK THERE IS NO BAD STYLE, ALL OF THEM ARE DANCEABLE AND TEACHABLE.

5

IN BALLET THERE ARE MANY ASPECTS THAT RECKON WITH BODY ORGANIC.THE QUESTION IS WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR BODY, NOT INSIDE THE STYLE, BUT INSIDE YOUR BODY. SO IT DEPENDS ON PEOPLE AND ATTITUDE, NOT ON STYLE. H: EVERY BODY IS INDIVIDUAL... T: YES, YOU HAVE TO RECKON WITH BIOMECHANICS AND THE STRUCTURE OF SKELETON. IF WE KNOW, HOW WE USE OUR SUPPORTING SYSTEM, THEN THERE IS NO QUESTION IN WHICH STYLE ARE YOU WORKING IN. IT IS A PITY I HAVE REACHED THE KNOWLEDGE OF KINESIOLOGY AND BIOMECHANICS SO LATE. BUT BETTER LATE THAN NEVER. H: WHAT IS BIOMECHANICS? T: IT MEANS OUR MUSCLES HAVE CERTAIN FUNCTIONS, IT DOES NOT MATTER IF YOU ARE A DANCER, ATHLETE OR COMMON MAN. OUR BODY HAS AN ORDER WHICH WE CAN NOT IGNORE. WE HAVE TO STUDY IT OR WE BREAK OURSELVES. WHEN WE WORK WITH ONLY ONE PART OF THE BODY, OTHER PARTS GET WEAK. H: DID YOUR CONTEMPORARY DANCE BEGIN WITH SOME KIND OF PHILOSOPHY OR DID YOU START WITH MOVEMENT WHICH GREW INTO THE KNOWLEDGE OF BODY AS A THINKING WHOLE. T: DANCE IS A VISUAL WORLD, BUILT THROUGH SENSING AND CREATING EMOTIONS. AT FIRST WE JUST COPIED TRADITIONAL MODERN DANCE TECHNIQUES.GRAHAM TECHNIQUE FOR SOMEBODY WITH SHORT LEGS AND LONG BODY. NIKOLAIS TECHNIQUE SAID THAT THERE IS NO DIVISION BETWEEN MALE AND FEMALE MOVEMENTS. IN CONTEMPORARY DANCE IT IS POSSIBLE TO CONCENTRATE ON YOUR OWN INDIVIDUAL BODY AND MOVEMENT, NOT ON COPYING. THERE ARE MANY WAYS OF THINKING AND MOVING, BUT THE GROUND,THE ESSENCE IS BLEARY. H: MAI MURDMAA SAID IN ONE INTERVIEW THAT A CONTEMPORARY DANCER „LIVES INSIDE THE MOVEMENT.“ WHAT KIND OF A MIRACULOUS BEING IS THE CONTEMPORARY DANCER? T: CONTEMPORARY DANCER LIVES TOGETHER WITH HIS/HER BODY. IT CAN ALSO BE A CLASSICAL DANCER. DANCER HAS TO BE AWARE WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH HIS BODY AND HOW REAL HE CAN BE. IS HE JUST OBSERVING HIMSELF FROM FAR OR IS HE REALLY TOUCHING HIS INSIDE WORLD. KNOWING OF THE MATERIAL, YOUR OWN MUSCLE SENSITIVITY IS WHAT DISTINGUISHES EXCELLENT DANCERS AND ATHLETES FROM MEDIOCRE ONES. H: WHERE COMES THE IMPULSE FOR THE CHOREOGRAPHY? HOW VISIBLE IS THE PROCESS FROM IDEA TO PERFORMANCE? T: IT IS ALWAYS DIFFERENT. IN „PHASES“ THE IMPULSE WAS MUSIC (STEVE REICH), SO MINIMALISTIC MOVEMENT CAME FROM THIS. IN „BET“ IT WAS THE OTHER WAY AROUND, IT EMANATED FROM HUMAN TYPES AND THEIR PLAYFUL INTERACTION. MUSIC CAME AFTER THAT. IN SOME PIECES MUSIC IS JUST THE SOUNDSCAPE AND OTHERS THAT HAVE BEEN COUNTED PRECICELY TO MUSIC. BUT THEN WE TALK ABOUT TOTALLY OTHER AMOUNT OF TIME. MUSICIAN CAN READ THE NOTE, DANCER HAS TO LEARN NOTES BY HEART AND HAS TO KNOW WHEN MOVEMENTS ARE

HAPPENING IN THE MUSIC. IT TAKES A LOT OF WORK AND TIME. H: BUT WHAT ABOUT „TWO TRAINS“? WAS CINEMATIC ORCHESTRA AN IMPULSE? T: NO, MUSIC CAME LATER. IT STARTED FROM CHARACTERS, A WOMAN IN RED DRESS AND A MAN IN BLACK SUIT. ACTUALLY EVERYTHING BEGAN WITH COSTUMES, WE HAD THEM, WE WENT TO ST. PETERSBURG AND TRIED TO SEE, HOW THE VISION OF THOSE TWO FIGURES WILL COME ALIVE IN THE CITY. H: AND YOU HAD SOME PROBLEMS THERE AS YOU WERE CREATING THE PIECE? T: WE TRIED TO FILM IN METRO AND THEY CHASED US AWAY, BECAUSE METRO WAS A MILITARY OBJECT AND IT WAS ABSOLUTELY FORBIDDEN TO RECORD IN THERE. BUT THEN WE MADE A LITTLE FILMING EVERYWHERE AND WE GOT WHAT WE NEEDED. H: AND „LANDSCAPING IN PROGRESS“, IT WAS TOTALLY OTHER IMPULSE? T: YES, IT WAS THE EVENT,TREMBLING THAT WAS IN THE AIR.WE TRIED TO CATCH WHAT HAPPENED AROUND THE BRONZE SOLDIER.WE WANTED PEOPLE TO FEEL THE SHAKING GROUND, SHAKING OF THE SOCIETY, NOT TO SHOW THE EVENT ITSELF. WE DID NOT CRITICIZE,WE OBSERVED. WE USUALLY TRY TO SHOW, NOT DIRECTLY, BUT THROUGH METAPHORIC THINKING. H: IS IT POSSIBLE TO TRANSLATE A WORD INTO MOVEMENT? IS SIMULTANEOUS TRANSLATION A CHALLENGE OR A FAILURE? T: DIFFERENT LANGUAGES HAVE DIFFERENT CAPACITY TO TALK ABOUT DANCE.THERE ARE LANGUAGES THAT ARE MORE ADEQUATE TO DESCRIBE WHAT BODY FEELS, MORE PHYSICAL LANGUAGES. BUT I THINK WORDS ARE NOT DIRECTLY TRANSLATABLE INTO MOVEMENT. IN TWO YEARS YOU COULD HAVE THE ANSWERS FOR THIS QUESTION, BECAUSE MY MASTER´S THESIS IS GOING TO BE WRITTEN ON THIS SUBJECT. H: BUT MAYBE WE DO NOT HAVE THOSE WORDS IN ESTONIAN YET? T: I DO NOT THINK THERE IS A NEED FOR INVENTING NEW WORDS. MOVEMENT-THINKING IS A NEW WORD. H: WHAT IS MOVEMENT-THINKING? T: IF YOU TRANSLATE IT DIRECTLY THEN IT IS THINKING THROUGH MOVING AND OBSERVING IT. MOVEMENT PHILOSOPHY. H: AND HOW IMPORTANT IS HEAD IN IT? T: THEY SAY THAT HEAD CARRIES OUR BODY. HEAD IS ONE ANATOMICAL PART OF THE BODY. HEAD CAN BE THE HOME OF THOUGHT.WHOLE BODY IS THE HOME OF THOUGHT, HOME OF MIND. H: COULD IT BE THAT LITTLE TOE THINKS AS HEAD? T: ABSOLUTELY.WE HAVE A BUNCH OF NERVES INSIDE OUR BACKBONE WHICH IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO OUR BODY AND BRAIN. IN THAT IS THE PHENOMENA OF MOVEMENT. IF YOU STUDY DANCE, THEN THE INTELLIGENCE IS NOT ONLY IN BRAIN LEVEL.YOU CAN LEARN THE NAMES OF MUSCLES AND WHAT ARE THEIR FUNCTIONS, BUT IT DOES NOT WORK. IF YOU FEEL A CONNECTION POINT IN YOUR MUSCLES, BONES, SKIN AND THOUGHT,THEN YOU WORK WITH THE BODY SENSITIVELY.THIS IS THE BODY INTELLIGENCE. I WANT TO UNDERSTAND MYSELF. IF I CREATE A CHOREOGRAPHY,THEN I ASK TIME AND SPACE FROM PEOPLE, I SHOULD HAVE SOMETHING I WANT TO SHOW THEM,TELL THEM. H: WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM THE AUDIENCE? CONTEMPORARY DANCE HAS MORE DEMANDS ON PEOPLE TOO, THEY SHOULD BE WATCHING WITH THOUGHT.YOU CAN NOT BE PASSIVELY NUMB. RENÉ: I HAVE ALWAYS ASSUMED THAT AUDIENCE HAS A SENSE OF METAPHORICAL THINKING. I HAVE BEEN MISTAKEN A LOT, BUT I HAVE HOPED FOR IT. I HAVE ASSUMED THAT THEY DO NOT LIKE ONLY BANAL JOKES, THEY ARE ABLE TO THINK WITH US IN THE THEATRE,THEY HAVE A SENSE OF MUSIC (NOT THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO BE MOZART OR BEETHOVEN). I HAVE BEEN MISTAKEN A LOT, BUT I HAVE THOUGHT THAT. I HAVE BEEN NAIVE AND THOUGH THAT PEOPLE TRY TO CONNECT WITH THE LANGUAGE OF MOVEMENT. NOT ONLY CLEARLY EXPLAINABLE SITUATIONS.THERE IS LOT TO LEARN HOW TO RELATE WITH CONTEMPORARY MOVEMENT, HOW TO READ THIS TEXT. T: I ASSUME THAT PEOPLE TAKE THE TIME TO BE OPENED,TO BE READY TO WATCH. FROM MY SIDE I HAVE TAKEN THE RESPONSIBILITY THAT I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY TO THE AUDIENCE.

FEATURED ARTISTS D 7

H: WHAT ABOUT CRITERION OF CONTEMPORARY DANCE? T: IN ESTONIA YOU MIGHT FEEL THAT THERE ARE NO CRITERIONS. EVERYTHING THAT IS NOT OPERA, BALLET OR DRAMA, IS CONTEMPORARY DANCE. IN AMERICA CHOREOGRAPHY IS STRONGLY ASSOCIATED WITH MOVEMENT. PERFORMANCE AS A STYLE IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT THING WHAT IN ESTONIA IS CONTEMPORARY DANCE. AND ALSO IN FINLAND THERE IS MOVEMENT BASED THINKING, MEDIUM IN DANCE PERFORMANCE IS MOVING BODY. R: THIS IS THE CRITERION FOR US AT LEAST. DANCE IS ART OF MOVING, NOT ART OF ACTING,TALKING OR MAKING NOISE. T: TO BE HONEST, ESTONIAN DANCE DOES NOT EXIST, BECAUSE ESTONIAN DANCER IS WORKING LIKE AN AMATEUR. CONTEMPORARY DANCE IS A SECONDARY THING.WE HAVE TWO NATIONAL BALLET THEATERS (VANEMUINE AND ESTONIA) WHICH GET MONEY FROM ESTONIAN GOVERNMENT. R: AND THIS IS TOO MUCH FOR ESTONIA, BECAUSE FOREIGNERS WORK IN THOSE THEATERS.THIS IS A BIG QUESTION. WE DO NOT WANT THAT BALLET THEATERS WOULD VANISH, BUT WE SHOULD IMPROVE OUR OWN ESTONIAN DANCE. OF COURSE WE HAVE TO WORK AT IT, BUT IT IS COMPULSORY TO INVEST IN LOCAL CHOREOGRAPHERS, NOT TO TAKE THE EASY WAY OUT AND BRING THEM FROM OTHER COUNTRIES. THIS HAS ALWAYS BEEN A PRINCIPLE FOR FINE 5, TO IMPROVE OUR OWN THING. H: COULD YOU DEFINE DANCE AS DRAWING IN THE AIR? COULD YOU RECORD MOVEMENTS INTO THE AIR? R: IN DANCE COMPOSITION THERE ARE BLUEPRINTS OF THE FLOOR,YOU CAN SEE DRAWN TRIANGLES OR CIRCLES. BLUEPRINTS DRAWN IN THE AIR ARE A MATERIAL OF DANCE COMPOSITION. BUT IN METAPHORICAL SENSE YOU COULD SAY THAT DANCE IS A MOMENTARY ART WHICH IS DRAWN IN THE AIR. AND WHAT YOU CAN TAKE FROM THE PERFORMANCE AIR IS WHAT YOU UNDERSTAND OF IT. WHAT HAS BEEN INSIDE YOU BEFORE THAT, MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO READ IT. DANCER DESIGNS SPACE WITH MOVEMENTS IN TIME. IF YOU LOOK AT THE AUDIENCE, THEN YOU DRAW A BRIDGE IN THE AIR. YOU COULD DRAW THROUGH YOUR SHOULDER,THROUGH YOUR SKIN OR BACK. H: BUT COULD WE TALK ABOUT BODY ARCHITECTURE? T: WE HAVE BEEN CREATED BY AN ARCHITECT. R: DANCE COMPISITION AS AN ARCHITECTURE. ARCHITECTURE IS NOT MOVING IN SPACE, ALTHOUGH IT IS DYNAMICAL THROUGH ITS FORM. DANCE COMPOSITION IS ARCHITECTURE IN TEMPORAL CONTINUITY. T: ARCHITECTURE DRAWN IN THE AIR. H: WHAT IS THE NEXT THING YOU WANT TO TELL BY MOVING? R: I DO NOT KNOW THAT YET. EVERY TIME IT IS DIFFERENT. IN THE BEGINNING IT IS A BLEARY SUBSTANCE, A DISSATISFACTION, A WISH TO DISCOVER, TO FIND, WHAT I THINK IS HIDDEN. SOMETHING TO EXPERIENCE, TO MEDIATE. H: BUT THERE IS SOMETHING FIZZING IN SUPRARENALS? R: SOME KIND OF A SILENT FIZZING THAT IS PUSHING ME TO ACT,WHICH IS IMPOSSIBLE TO VERBALIZE YET. LIKE PINA BAUSCH SAID: „I DON NOT CARE WHY DANCERS ARE MOVING, BUT WHAT IS MOVING THEM.“ WHAT IS MOVING THEM TO MOVE. OFTEN IN PERFORMANCES IT IS SUBCONCIOUSLY PERCEPTIBLE IF CHOREOGRAPHER HAS BEEN MOVED BY SOMETHING. OTHERWISE IT IS JUST A PLAY OF FORM, THE UNDERWATER AREA OF THE ICEBERG IS EMPTY. THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG CAN BE BEAUTIFULLY DESIGNED. BUT WHAT MOVES ME, IS EMPTY. AND THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED TO FILL IN THE BEGINNING, SO THAT THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG COULD COME INTO BEING.

ENJOY.

NOT EVERY DAY GREETS YOU WITH RAYS OF SUN IN YOUR EYES. IT MIGHT ALSO RAIN VERY HEAVILY LIKE IT DID ON THAT EARLY AUGUST DAY. BUT DESPITE OF THE FACT THAT DARK GRAY SKY SEEMED NEVER TO BRIGHTEN UP AGAIN WE TOOK IT PHILOSOPHICALLY - FLOWERS NEED WATER TOO TO BLOOM AND AFTER ALL, WHEN RAIN STOPS, THERE WILL ALWAYS BE SUN AGAIN. SO IT HAPPENED THAT EVENTUALLY SUN CAME OUT, FLOWERS WERE HAPPY AND OUR ADVENTURE COULD START! WHEN WE ARRIVED IN A VERY PICTURESQUE PLACE CALLED LOO WE FOUND OURSELVES SURROUNDED BY ZILLIONS OF DIFFERENT FLOWERS AND PLANTS THAT GREW WILDLY, A RIVER, AN OLD MANOR FROM 1800’S AND OF COURSE - HORSES! IT ALL HAD AN EFFECT ON US THAT LASTED ALL DAY - EVEN IF A BIT INTIMIDATED BY THOSE BIG CREATURES, WE ALL FELT LIKE CHILDREN WHO WANTED TO RUN AROUND AND DISCOVER EVERYTHING AS FAST AS POSSIBLE. YET, WORK WAS WAITING! THIS TIME IT HAD TO BE ALL ABOUT DRESSES I HAD CHOSEN THAT ALL ASSOCIATED WITH FLOWERS AND NATURE. AS NANCY LOVES RIDING, SHE HAD A BRILLIANT IDEA TO INCLUDE ALSO SOME FAUNA - MEANING HORSES! WHAT ELSE COULD YOU ASK? RAIN STOPPED EXACTLY AT THE MOMENT RISTO GOT MAKE UP AND HAIR DONE. AIR WAS FRESH AND NATURE LOOKED LIKE WASHED AND POLISHED ESPECIALLY FOR US TO GET STARTED. IT WAS A CHALLENGE AT FIRST FOR DAVIDE TO GET COMFORTABLE WITH THE CLOSE PRESENCE OF THIS BEAUTIFUL CREATURE CALLED VALENTINO. BUT AS THEY GOT TO KNOW EACH OTHER BETTER, THEY BOTH SAW THAT THERE IS NO HARM FROM EITHER PART.VALENTINO WAS A VERY GOOD MODEL AND KEPT HIS EARS STRAIGHT UP WHEN NEEDED WHILE DAVIDE APPRECIATED HIS EFFORTS WITH CAPTURING THE PERFECT MOMENT AND ANGLE! NANCY AND VALENTINO WERE A GREAT SYMBIOSIS - BESIDES WORKING TOGETHER WE COULD CLEARLY SEE THAT THEY ARE ALSO GOOD FRIENDS. NANCY TOOK POSES FAST AND NATURALLY, ACCORDING TO WHAT VALENTINO WAS DOING AND IT WAS INTERESTING TO SEE THOSE TWO OPPOSITE CREATURES RESPONDING TO EACH OTHER. WHEN WE HAD A SMALL PAUSE IN BETWEEN THE SHOOTS, WE FOUND SOME WONDERFUL RIDING ACCESSORIES FROM THE DRESSING ROOMS. ACCESSORIES LIKE THE CUTEST LITTLE BLACK VELVET HAT AND OH-SO-ELEGANT WHITE LEATHER GLOVES. NOT TO MENTION THE SHINY RIDING BOOTS THAT NANCY HAD BROUGHT WITH HER! I ADJUSTED ALL OF THEM TO THE OUTFITS AND RESULT WAS GREAT! OUR FLOWER-LIKE GIRL BECAME A RIDER... SHE EVEN REMINDED A WARRIOR ON THE PICTURE WHERE SHE WEARS HAT, GLOVES, BOOTS AND TROUSERS - ALL FOR RIDING - AND THE BELT FROM DESIGNER. IT WAS VERY INSPIRING TO DISCOVER THAT THERE CAN BE SUCH AN ELEGANCE IN ONE SPORT! WITHOUT NOTICING WE HAD SPENT A VERY INTENSE DAY. JUST AT THE VERY END WE ALL FELT VERY TIRED BUT IT DID NOT MATTER. WE PACKED OURSELVES, ALL THE CLOTHES AND EQUIPMENT IN OUR MINI COOPER AND HEADED BACK TO THE CITY. EVEN IF CHALLENGING, IT WAS A FUN DAY FOR ALL OF US AND AN EXPERIENCE NOT TO FORGET. THE DAY HAD TURNED FROM GLOOMY TO BLOOMY BY ALL MEANS!

FASHION D 37 ***************************************************************** 1. WHERE DID YOU GROW UP – AND WERE YOU SURROUNDED BY ART, MUSIC AND FASHION OR WAS IT SOMETHING YOU SOUGHT OUT ON YOUR OWN? I GREW UP IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE, 50 KM NORTH OF MONTPELLIER, SURROUNDED BY NATURE. 2. WHY DID YOU GET INTO FASHION INITIALLY – WAS BEING A FASHION DESIGNER SOMETHING YOU ALWAYS DREAMED OF? I ALWAYS LOVED CLOTHES AND STYLE SINCE I REMEMBER MYSELF. I NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT DESIGNING AS A PROFESSION, IT JUST CAME OUT NATURALLY. 3. WHAT IS THE FASHION SCENE IN NEW YORK LIKE? THERE ARE SO MANY INNOVATIVE YOUNG DESIGNERS COMING OUT ... WHAT IS DIFFERENT TO PARIS, MILAN AND OTHER EUROPEAN CITIES? CREATIVE, STREET AND ROCK….LOTS OF TATTOOS. NY HAS A NY STYLE….WHERE EUROPE MEETS AMERICA. NY STYLE IS INFLUENCED BY AMERICAN MUSIC. 4.YOU ARE KNOWN FOR AN OWN APPROACH TOWARDS CUTTING, SEWING AND FITTING. IS THERE ALSO A CONSERVATIVE ELEMENT WE DON´T SEE FIRST IN YOUR DESIGNS? I DO ALL WORK AS A COUTURIER. 5. HOW DOES THE PROCESS OF DESIGNING LOOK LIKE AND WITH WHAT DO YOU START WITH? IT IS BASICALLY A COMMUNICATION WITH THE FABRIC I CHOSE TO WORK WITH…AND THE FEELINGS THAT COMES OUT OF IT. 6. WHAT DOES CREATION MEAN TO YOU? IS IT AN EXPRESSION OF FEELINGS? CREATION CAN ONLY BE FEELINGS. IT IS THE MOST PERSONAL EXPRESSION, THE INSIDE OUT! THE REAL YOU! 7. WHICH THREE WORDS COULD DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE THE BEST? ARTISTIC, CREATIVE AND ELEGANT. 8.YOU MOSTLY DESIGN DRESSES AND SKIRTS? WHY? DO YOU FEEL TO HAVE A BIGGER UNDERSTANDING FOR WOMAN, THEN FOR MAN? I DESIGN DRESSES AND SKIRTS BECAUSE THEY ARE THE FIRST ELEMENTS WHICH DEFINES A WOMAN, BUT I AM COMING UP WITH PANTS AND JACKETS THIS YEAR. I AM VERY BUSY THINKING WOMAN BUT LOOKING FORWARD TO THINKING MEN! 9. THE THEME OF THIS ISSUE IS FLORA, I DIDN´T ASK YOU FOR YOUR PERSONAL MEANING FOR THAT. WHAT DOES FLORA, BLOSSOMS ... MEAN TO YOU AND HOW DO YOU SEE A CONNECTION TO YOUR WORK. WOMAN CREATE LIFE…SHE EXPERIENCES BLOSSOMING! WOMAN IS CLOSE TO FLOWER…THEY ARE BEAUTY FIRST…JUST LIKE FLOWERS. 10. WHO AND WHAT INSPIRES YOU? I LET MY IMAGINATION TAKE ME, I GO WITH IT AND I LET IT BE. *****************************************************************

SAKURA A HOME OFFICE FOR A COUPLE PLANNED IN A RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD IN MEGURO. THE SITE IS SITUATED IN AN AREA WHERE LAND COSTS ARE AMONG THE HIGHEST IN TOKYO.THE AREA IS TYPICALLY CLUTTERED, LIKE MOST RESIDENTIAL AREAS IN DOWNTOWN TOKYO.IT IS HARD TO SAY THAT QUALITY OF LIVING ENVIRONMENT DESERVES THE PRICE OF LAND. I FELT THAT CREATING A BETTER LIVING ENVIRONMENT WAS A TOP PRIORITY UPON SQUEEZING IN YET ANOTHER HOUSE INTO THIS NEIGHBORHOOD.WHAT CAME TO MY MIND WERE THE TWO CLASSIC ‘GLASS HOUSES’* BY MIES AND PHILIP JOHNSON. THE SENSE OF FREEDOM AND OPENNESS THAT MAKES US WANT TO WALK NAKED INSIDE THESE HOUSES SURELY OWES TO THE TRANSPARENCY OF THE GLASS ITSELF, BUT IT IS THE FACT THAT THE BUILDINGS ARE SURROUNDED BY A PLEASANT ENVIRONMENT –THE FOREST– THAT COUNTS THE MOST.SINCE ‘THE FOREST’ ITSELF ALREADY PROVIDES A COMFORTABLE LIVING ENVIRONMENT, IT IS LEFT FOR THE ARCHITECTURE TO SEPARATE INTERNAL TO EXTERNAL ATMOSPHERES WITH THIN, TRANSPARENT MEMBRANES.THEY CLEALY DEMONSTRATE THAT AS LONG AS THERE IS AN ENVIRONMENT SUITABLE FOR LIVING, A ‘HOUSE’ IS NO MORE NECESSARY. WHAT I LOOKED TO CREATE HERE WAS A PRESENCE THAT WOULD REPLACE THIS ‘FOREST’. MORE PRECISELY, I ATTEMPTED TO GENERATE A QUALITY LIVING ENVIRONMENT BY PLACING TWO LARGE, SWIRLED BELT-SHAPED SURFACES ON THE PREMISES. THE PAIR CONSISTS OF SELF-STANDING WALLS MEASURING 7.5 M AND 5 M HIGH RESPECTIVELY, MADE OF LACE-LIKE STEEL 3 MM THICK THAT FILTERS LIGHT LIKE SUNSHINE THROUGH FOLIAGE, WITH HOLES PUNCHED OUT IN A FLORAL PATTERN DEPICTING CHERRY BLOSSOMS, A TRADITIONAL ISE PAPER STENCIL PATTERN. AS WE MAKE OUR WAY INTO THE ABSTRACTED FOREST OF CHERRY BLOSSOMS, WE ARE GREETED BY AN ‘ENVIRONMENT FILLED WITH “ANTICIPATION” FOR A LIVING COMFORT.’ THERE, NOTHING CAN BE FOUND THAT SUGGESTS A ‘SETUP’ OF A ‘HOUSE‘. THE PLACE IS A PURE ‘LIVING ENVIRONMENT’ AND IS NEITHER A SYMBOL CALLED ‘HOUSE’ NOR A ‘RESIDENTIAL AREA.’ A BRIGHT DEPTH, BEYOND THE REACH OF URBANISM, IS BORN IN TOKYO. MUSEUM OF NATURE IS NEXT STEP IN CONTINUUM OF IMAGINATIVE NATURE RESTORING PROJECT, WHICH STARTED YEAR 2000 AS RESTORATION EXHIBITION. RESTORATION SERIES WAS ABOUT RESTORING SINGLE NATURE OBJECTS IN MEANS OF TECHNOLOGY AND BUILDING SKILLS. MUSEUM PROJECT TAKES ONE STEP FURTHER. I MAKE PLANS AND CONSTRUCT VISUALLY BUILDINGS, WHICH PROTECT NATURE FROM TREATHS OF POLLUTION AND WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT FROM ACTIONS OF MAN HIMSELF. I VISUALIZE SHELTERS, MASSIVE BUILDINGS WHERE BIG ECOSYSTEMS COULD BE STORED AS AT PRESENT. THESE MASSIVE BUILDING PROTECT FORESTS, LAKES AND RIVERS FROM POLLUTION AND WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT FROM ACTIONS OF MAN HIMSELF. AT THE SAME TIME I STUDY DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF MANS RELATION TO NATURE AS RARE UNIQUE ENDANGERED PLACE. WHILE PUTTING NATURE INTO A MUSEUM YOU HAVE TO TAKE UNDER CONSIDERATION ASPECT OF AUDIENCE/ CONSUMER. NATURE BECOMES JOYRIDE FOR TURISTS OR BEAUTYFULL LANDSCAPE TURNS INTO A MEDITATIVE THEATRE SHOW. PROJECT IS BASED ON PESSIMISTIC VISION OF WHAT IS HAPPENING ON EARTH. I AM LOOKING INTO FUTURE AND I AM NOT VERY HAPPY ABOUT THAT. I AM CONSIDERING THESE PICTURES MORE AS VISUAL PAMPHLETS THAN ESTETICAL IMAGES. DIGITAL PROCESS IS CONSTANTLY PRESENT IN THE WORKS. I AM COMBINING FREELY PHOTOGRAPHS OF LANDSCAPES AND COMPUTER GENERETED 3D-MODELS. WORKS ARE VISUALIZED BUILDING PLANS, PLANS I RATHER NOT WANT TO SEE REALIZED.

VISUAL ARTS D 117

THESE DESIGNS WERE CREATED FOR THE FINNISH INTERIOR TEXTILE COMPANY FINLAYSON (WHICH CELEBRATES ITS’ 190 YEAR BIRTHDAY NEXT YEAR) FOR THEIR BEDLINEN COLLECTION. “LUONTO” DESIGN (MEANS “NATURE” IN FINNISH) IS MADE WITH THE FAIR TRADE ORGANIZATION IN ORDER TO USE FAIR TRADE COTTON. THIS TRADE PROVIDES WORK FOR COTTON COMPANIES IN MALI (AFRICA) AND HELPS THEM LEARN HOW TO DO BUSINESS WITH EUROPEAN COUNTRIES. THIS INTERNATIONAL CO-OPERATION STIMULATES ‘RESPONSABLE DESIGN AND RESPONSABLE CONSUMING’. THE DESIGNS WERE INSPIRED FROM JAANA’S CHILDHOOD ‘FLORAL MEMORIES’...BEAUTIFUL SCANDINAVIAN SUMMER DAYS, FLOWERS, BUTTERFLIES, BRIGHT COLOURS WITH A TOUCH OF THE SEVENTIES.

THE MUNDANE OBJECT I.E THE PLUG, IS OVERLOOKED AND BUILT FOR FUNCTION NOT FORM. HOWEVER THE PLUG FUELS THE MODERN WAY OF LIFE BY PROVIDING THE POWER TO USE T.V’S, COMPUTERS, KETTLES ETC. THE IMAGES WHEN FIRST LOOKED AT SEEM SLICK, GRAPHIC AND COOL (HARMLESS). LIKE THE WAY SOCIETY SEEMS TO ONLY LOOK AT IMAGES. THE WAY LIFE SEEMS TO BE ALL ABOUT GLOSS AND NO CONTENT. THE IMAGES HAVE UNDER LYING ISSUES THAT AREN’T AT FIRST APPARENT. LIKE THE FACT ELECTRICITY CAN TAKE LIFE, AS WELL AS GIVE IT. THROUGH LOOKING AT JUST THE PLUG AND ITS SURROUNDINGS, THE VIEWER IS ASKED TO BUILD UP A PICTURE OF THE OWNER OF THE APPLIANCE, THEIR ROOM AND LIFESTYLE. THE TYPE OF WALLPAPER AND APPLIANCE WILL AID THIS. MAKING THE IMAGE A KIND OF PORTRAIT.

DINING D.O.C.

D.O.C. IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE SPOTS THIS SUMMER. ESPECIALLY THE TIRAMISU! YOU CAN´T GO HOME WITHOUT HAVING ONE. BUT BEFORE HAVING THAT I RECOMMEND THEIR SPECIALS...YOU WILL NEVER GO WRONG WITH THE RED OR WHITE WINE THEY HAVE CHOSEN FOR THE DAY! THE DISHES ARE SARDINIAN AND IN A HOME MADE QUALITY THAT YOUR ITALIAN GRANDMOTHER WON´T PREPARE THEM! THE MOSTLY ITALIAN CROWD IS HUGGING AND CHAIN TOASTING ALL NIGHT LONG AND YOU WILL RELAX AND FEEL TRANSFERED TO EUROPE FOR AN EVENING AND FORGET THE CITIES STRESS IN A SECOND. PERFECT FOR A ROMANTIC DATE, FOR A CHILL OUT EVENING, FOR A LONG TALK WITH YOUR MOTHER OR THE HEARTBROKEN GIRLFRIEND YOU WANT TO CHEER UP WITH SOME SWEET – TIRAMISU WILL RESTORE HER FAITH IN LOVE AGAIN!

SWIMMING DUMPSTER DIVING JUST GOT ANOTHER MEANING. A GROUP OF FRIENDS FORMED THE COMPANY MACRO-SEA AND SET UP THEIR URBAN DUMPSTER SWIMMING POOLS IN BROOKLYN. TO MAKE IT A POOL, THEY SEALED THE SEAMS, ADDED A LINER, FILLED THE BOTTOM WITH SAND, ROUNDED DOWN THE INTERIOR EDGES, ADDED A FILTER, THOUSANDS OF GALLONS OF WATER. ALL THAT WAS LEFT WAS A DISCREET INVITE TO A FEW DOZEN PEOPLE. THE EXCLUSIVITY OF THIS DIVING EXPERIENCE WAS SHORTLY CHANGED BY LOCAL PAPERS, WHICH ANNOUNCED THE LOCATION KNOWING PEOPLE THIRSTY FOR WATER. (THE CORNER OF CARROLL AND BOND STREET, JUST A BLOCK FROM THE GOWANUS CANAL) WE MIGHT ALL ASK OURSELF WHY NOT TO HAVE A DUMPSTER POOL ON EACH BLOCK IN THE CITY. STOP BREAKING FIREPLUGS, START DUMPSTER SWIMMING.
