HEART MAGAZINE MEETS ITALIAN FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER
12 D FEATURED ARTIST WHEN I FIRST MET ANGELO LANZA, A SEPTEMBER OF SEVERAL YEARS AGO AT A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY SCHOOL IN MILAN, I KNEW ALMOST ANYTHING OF PHOTOGRAPHY AND EVEN LESS OF FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY. A FANCY VERSACE DRESS ADMIRED IN THE VIA MONTENAPOLEONE BOUTIQUE WAS THE MAIN REASON BEHIND MY “NECESSITY” OF LEARNING HOW TO SHOOT SIMILAR ONES. AND ANGELO LOOKED LIKE THE PERFECT PERSON TO TEACH ME HOW TO DO THAT. I REMEMBER OF THIS TRENDY-DRESSED MAN, GENTLY SHOUTING TO US, HIS PUPILS, TRYING TO TELL US WHAT TO DO AND -ESPECIALLY- WHAT NOT TO DO: “DOWN WITH THAT ASS!”, “IF YOU CROP IT, CROP IT MORE!”, “USE YOUR LEGS INSTEAD OF THE ZOOM!”, “THIS SUCKS”, BEEING SOME OF THEM. I STILL REMEMBER HIM ARGUING WITH ONE MAKE-UP ARTIST WHO WANTED TO HAVE THE FINAL WORD ON ONE MODEL’S LOOK. BUT THE ATMOSPHERE WAS ALWAYS NICE, FRIENDLY, AND IT WAS THANKS TO HIS STRAIGHTFORWARDNESS THAT I WAS ABLE TO LEARN WHAT I KNOW TODAY ABOUT FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY. MANY YEARS HAVE PASSED SINCE THEN AND WHILE WORKING AT THIS ANNIVERSARY ISSUE I SOMEWHAT HAD NO DOUBTS: I WANT ANGELO, MY MENTOR, TO OPEN IT! AFTER ALL, HEART MAGAZINE WOULDN’T EXIST IF THIS MAN FROM NORTHERN ITALY WOULD HAVEN’T PASSED ME HIS PASSION FOR PHOTOGRAPHY AND INTRODUCED ME TO THE FASCINATING WORLD OF FASHION... BORN IN A SMALL TOWN IN VERONA’S COUNTRYSIDE, LANZA MOVED TO MILAN WHEN HE WAS 17 TO STUDY MEDICINE; AT THE FIFTH YEAR HE TEMPORARILY STOPPED ATTENDING THE CLASSES..AND NEVER WENT BACK: NEW INTERESTS HAD ARISED. FOR SOME YEARS HE WAS INVOLVED WITH A CULTURAL CENTER IN MILAN, ALWAYS DEVELOPING HIS LONG LASTING PASSION FOR PHOTOGRAPHY, UNTIL HE BUMPED INTO
FEATURED ARTIST D 13 THE WORLD OF FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY...THAT HE NEVER LEFT! HE HAS WORKED FOR ITALIAN AND INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINES, HIS CLIENTS INCLUDING ROY ROGERS, AERONAUTICA MILITARE AND MORE... IN MILAN HE IS REPRESENTED BY MANDALA AGENCY. TODAY, BESIDES THE ACTIVITY OF PHOTOGRAPHY, HE IS ALSO ART DIRECTOR OF A NEW FASHION MAGAZINE, ROUND, PUBLISHED IN ITALY AND FRANCE. A NEW CHALLENGE...
HEART: WHEN DID YOU APPROACH THE WORLD OF PHOTOGRAPHY FIRST? ANGELO LANZA: I NEVER APPROACHED THE WORLD OF PHOTOGRAPHY, I REALIZED THAT I ALWAYS LOVED IT AND IT’S BEEN LIKE ENTERING A WORLD I’VE ALWAYS BEEN A PART OF. I’VE ALWAYS LOVED TAKING PHOTOS AND MOST OF ALL I’VE LOVED PHOTOGRAPHY AFTER I REALIZED THAT IT WAS OF RELIEF TO MY INTROVERT AND SURLY PERSONALITY. H: DO YOU REMEMBER YOUR FIRST ASSIGNEMENT AS A PHOTOGRAPHER? HAS IT BEEN OF ANY IMPORTANCE FOR YOUR FUTURE CAREER? AL: YES, I REMEMBER...A DISASTER...I WASN’T READY AND I REALIZED SOME AWFUL IMAGES! THE ASSIGNEMENT, MOREOVER, WASN’T EVEN EASY, TECHNICALLY SPEAKING... IN SHORT, THEY DIDN’T CALL ME ANYMORE.
THESE PAGES: THE EMPRESS’S NEW CLOTHES EDITORIAL ROUND MAGAZINE OPENING PAGE: VERTIGO EDITORIAL BMM MAGAZINE (FEATURING EVA RICCOBONO)
H: IN YOUR CAREER, HAVE YOU EVER HAD A MENTOR OR ANYWAY A STRONG REFERENCE? AL: YES, THERE’S BEEN THE ENCOUNTER WITH VICTOR SKREBNESKI, ON THE OCCASION OF AN EXHIBITION HE HELD IN MILAN IN 1990...IT WAS FATAL! I UNDERSTOOD HE LOVED PHOTOGRAPHY IN A PASSIONATE WAY AND I FELT HIS ENTHUSIASM AND MY PASSION AS WELL! H: YOUR FIRST CAMERA... IC: MY FIRST CAMERA WAS A PRESENT FROM MY UNCLE WHO (WITHOUT KNOWING ANYTHING)
14 D FEATURED ARTIST BROUGHT ME A SMALL PLASTIC CAMERA FROM LONDON, SOME KIND OF PINHOLE CAMERA, SOMETHING REALLY MINIMAL... BUT I ENJOYED MYSELF TAKING PICTURES. EVERYTIME MY MOTHER GOT ME A FILM FOR TAKING PICTURES, IT WAS A JOY. I WAS 7 YEARS OLD.
ARE SURELY OTHER KIND OF WORKS! WHAT MATTERS IS “TILL WHICH POINT YOU WANT TO PUSH”... WHAT I DON’T LIKE AT ALL OF DIGITAL ARE COLORS THAT FORCE YOU TO USE PHOTOSHOP AT LEAST FOR CHROMATIC CORRECTIONS IN MY OPINION ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY.
H: HOW IMPORTANT IS THE TECHNICAL EQUIPMENT TO GET A GOOD IMAGE? AL: VICTOR TAUGHT ME THAT YOU DON’T NEED GOOD CAMERAS TO MAKE A GOOD PHOTOGRAPH, ALL YOU NEED IS AN IDEA AND A BIG HEART. I’VE NEVER BEEN A TECHNICIAN OF PHOTOGRAPHY, EVEN THOUGH FOR PROFESSIONAL REASONS I FEEL OBLIGED TO GIVE MY WORK AT ITS BEST!
H: LET’S TALK OF THE CREATIVE PROCESS.WHAT’S BEHIND YOUR WORKS?
H: OVER THE “LAST” YEARS, DIGITAL HAS DETERMINED A BIG REVOLUTION IN ALL FIELDS OF PHOTOGRAPHY:WHAT ARE, IN YOUR OPINION,THE MOST REMARKABLE IMPLICATIONS OF THAT PHENOMENON? DO YOU THINK IT HAD A POSITIVE INFLUENCE ON THE “QUALITY” OF THE IMAGES AND, ESPECIALLY, OF THE PHOTOGRAPHERS? IN OTHER WORDS, DO YOU THINK THAT DIGITAL, BESIDES A GREAT OPPORTUNITY, IS ALSO A TRAP, A DANGER FOR WHO START THIS PROFESSION? AL: IT’S JUST AN EVOLUTION. I WOULDN’T ASK MYSELF TOO MANY QUESTIONS... LIFE GOES ON AND THINGS CHANGE... WE CHANGE, PHOTOGRAPHY CHANGE, EVERYTHING CHANGES AND IT’S RIGHT LIKE THIS. PHOTOGRAPHY HAS BEEN THE SAME FOR MANY YEARS...AS TELEPHONE...AT A CERTAIN POINT THEREìS AN INVENTION THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING AND YOU REALIZE THAT NOTHING OF WHAT WAS BEFORE IS STILL VALID... IT’S NOT SO IMPORTANT IF IT HAS AFFECTED THE QUALITY OF THE IMAGES OR NOT...NOW THINGS ARE LIKE THAT. PHOTOGRAPHY TODAY IS LESS MISTERIOUS THAN BEFORE, EVERYBODY IS ABLE TO (OR CAN) TAKE A PHOTO AND IF THEY MAKE A MISTAKE THEY CAN JUST DELETE IT AND MAKE ANOTHER ONE, I THINK IT’ S RIGHT THIS WAY... H: WHAT’S YOUR POSITION REGARDING THE POSTPRODUCTION? YOU PREFER POLISHED IMAGES, OR MORE RAW? AL: IT DEPENDS ON THE WORK YOU’RE DOING AND HOW THE FINAL RESULT IS SUPPOSED TO BE... THERE ARE WORKS MORE “LICKED” AND OTHERS THAT ARE LESS! ADVERTISING TODAY IS VERY “LICKED”, BUT THERE
AL: I CAN ONLY PARTLY ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION...A WORK ORIGINATES FROM AN IMPULSE, AN IDEA THAT YOU CAN CATCH FROM WHO’S TALKING TO YOU, FROM WHO’S IN FRONT OF YOU..AND SUDDENLY YOU REALIZE THAT YOU ALWAYS HAD THAT IDEA IN YOUR HEAD...YOU REALIZE THAT MAYBE YOU HAVE ALREADY DREAMED OF THAT PHOTOGRAPH...THAT’S ALL... H: YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM OTHER PHOTOGRAPHIC WORKS, FROM MAGAZINES OR FROM OTHER FORMSOF ART? AL: IT COMES FROM EVERY POSSIBLE STIMULATION, IT COMES FROM READING A BOOK, FROM AN EXHIBITION, GOING TO THE MALL FOR SHOPPING, WALKING AROUND... I THINK IT’S JUST A MENTAL CATEGORY, ALMOST A HABIT, TO TRANSLATE INTO IMAGES WHAT OTHERS TRANSLATE INTO WORDS OR MUSIC...NOTHING MORE! H: CAN YOU TELL US A “BEHIND THE SCENES” OF A PHOTOSHOOT THAT YOU REMEMBER FOR SOME SPECIAL REASON? AL: WELL, I DON’T KNOW, EVERY WORK IS DIFFERENT. IT’S NEVER THE SAME THING, SO EVERY WORK HAS ITS OWN STORY, BACKSTAGE, ANECDOTE... I ONLY KNOW THAT I’VE HAD FUN IN EVERY SINGLE WORK I’VE DONE,THAT I’VE LOVED THEM ALL, ALSO THE ONES THAT MADE ME SUFFER THE MOST! H: WHAT KIND OF REALTIONSHIP YOU HAVE WITH YOUR MODELS? YOU THINK IT’S IMPORTANT TO GET TO KNOW THEM BEFORE STARTING TO SHOOT? AL: NO,THEY ARE MEETINGS BETWEEN PROFESSIONALS, YOU SPEND TIME TOGETHER FOR WORKING AND NOT NECESSARILY YOU BECOME FRIENDS...USUALLY THE ONLY COMMON INTEREST IS TO MAKE NICE PHOTOS, I CARE ABOUT IT, THEY DO AS WELL. AFTER THAT EVERYONE TO HIS PLACE AND IF WORKING TOGETHER HAS BEEN A NICE EXPERIENCE, THEN IT CAN HAPPEN AGAIN. WITH

SOME OF THEM IT ACTUALLY HAPPENED, WITH OTHERS IT’S BEEN A ONE-TIME MEETING... H: IS THERE AN IMAGE IN YOUR PORTFOLIO THAT YOU LIKE FOR A SPECIAL REASON? A WORK THAT GAVE YOU SPECIAL SATISFACTION? AL: AS I TOLD YOU, I’VE LOVED THEM ALL...BUT AMONG THE IMAGES THAT I’VE SENT YOU THERE ARE SOME OF THE ONES THAT I’VE LOVED (AND I STILL DO) THE MOST.
AL: MANY. PENN, SKREBNESKI, BOURDIN, HINE, SIEFF, WITKIN, MAPPLETHORPE, RITTS... AND MORE, MANY MORE... H: ARE YOU MORE INVOLVED WHEN TAKING A FASHION PHOTO OR A PORTRAIT? WHAT THE EMOTIONS OF ONE AND OF THE OTHER ONE? AL: THEY ARE DIFFERENT THINGS,A FASHION PHOTO REQUIRES A DIFFERENT ATTITUDE FROM A PORTRAIT, I DON’T SEE SIMILARITIES, THEY ARE WAY TOO DIFFERENT, SO THE APPROACH...
H: IS THERE ANYONE IN PARTICULAR WITH WHOM YOU WOULD LIKE TO WORK? SOME WORK THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO? AL: I DON’T KNOW, THERE ARE MODELS THAT I LIKE VERY MUCH WITH WHOM I HAVEN’T WORKED, BUT THERE ARE ALSO OTHER MODELS THAT I LIKE AND WITH WHOM I’VE WORKED...
I WANT TO ADD AN ANECDOTE CONCERNING THIS INTERVIEW: READING THE ANSWERS THAT I WROTE, I REALIZED THAT INSTEAD OF “LOVED” (“AMATE” IN ITALIAN), I WROTE “LOVER” (“AMANTE”)... DRAW YOUR CONCLUSIONS................
H: AMONG THE LIVING PHOTOGRAPHERS, ARE THERE ANY THAT YOU RESPECT PARTICULARLY? AND FROM THE PAST?

VISUAL CHILL-OUT BY PormenorArquitectos THE BIGGEST CLUB ON THE NORTH OF PORTUGAL, DESIGNED BY PORMENORARQUITECTOS HOLDS WITHIN FOUR LIQUEUR BARS, SCATTERED ALONG 900 SQ METERS. CONSCIOUS OF THE FACT THAT INSIDE A CLUB, SPACE OFTEN STALLS AROUND BARS LEAVING A DULL AREA SURROUNDING THEM, THE DESIGN TEAM DECIDED TO TACKLE THAT PROBLEM. MUTATION THROUGH LIGHT WAS THE CHOSEN SOLUTION. THE BAR’S STRUCTURE WAS CREATED WITH INOX STEEL, COVERED WITH OPALINE POLYCARBONATED SOLID SHEETS. THE LIGHTING WAS ACHIEVED WITH A REMOTE CONTROLLED RGB-LED SYSTEM. THE EVER-CHANGING CHROMATIC RANGE IS THE ONLY SURROUNDING LIGHT SOURCE THUS CREATING A SOFT SPACE MUTATION BETWEEN COLORS.

ARTS MOT COLLECTION “PLASTIC MEMORIES – TO ILLUMINATE “NOW” ARTISTS: FUYUKI YAMAKAWA, CHRISTIAN BOLTANSKI, TOMOKO YONEDA, APICHATPONG WEERASETHAKUL, RICHARD LONG, KIMIO TSUCHIYA, MIYAKO ISHIUCHI, MASAAKI NAKAGAWA, TOMIO MIKI, YUKI KIMURA, YUKINORI MAEDA THIS EXHIBITION, ENTITLED ‘PLASTIC MEMORIES’, FOCUSES ON THE THEME OF MEMORIES THAT HAVE BEEN REMOVED FROM THEIR ORIGINAL CONTEXT OF ‘PLACE’ AND ‘TIME’, BECOMING RAW MATERIAL FOR THE ARTISTS TO RESHAPE THROUGH THE POWER OF THEIR IMAGINATIONS, THEREBY THROWING A LIGHT ON ONE ASPECT OF ‘CONTEMPORARY ART’. NUMEROUS DIFFERENT KINDS OF MEMORIES HAVE BEEN BROUGHT TOGETHER, THEY DO NOT NECESSARILY SPRING FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, SOME ARE COMMUNAL, IN THE FORM OF HISTORY, WHILE OTHERS RESIDE WITHIN MATERIALS OR LOCATIONS. AS WE TRACE THE IMAGES BROUGHT ABOUT BY THE MEMORIES, DRIFTING BETWEEN REALITY AND FANTASY, WE FIND THAT WE BECOME AWARE OF THE ‘PRESENT’ THAT BRINGS THEM BACK TO LIFE. PERHAPS IT IS BECAUSE IN THE SAME WAY THAT LIGHT IS ONLY MADE VISIBLE BY THE EXISTENCE OF DARKNESS, SO IT IS THAT WE CAN ONLY GRASP THE MOMENT THAT IS ‘NOW’ WITHIN THE PASSING OF DAYS BY USING PAST AS A BASIS. THEM THIS EXHIBITION WOULD OFFER THE VIEWERS AN OPPORTUNITY TO CONTEMPLATE METHODS OF ILLUMINATING THE ‘PRESENT’ OR SO-CALLED ‘CONTEMPORARY ART’, WHICH IS AN EXPRESSION OF THE TIMES IN WHICH WE LIVE. DATE: 2010-04-24 TO 2010-06-20 PLACE: MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART, TOKYO OPENING HOURS: 10:00-18:00, CLOSED ON MONDAYS
WEBSITE: www.mot-art-museum.jp/eng/collection.html “WHERE IS ARCHITECTURE? SEVEN INSTALLATIONS BY JAPANESE ARCHITECTS” ARTISTS: TOYO ITO, RYOJI SUZUKI, HIROSHI NAITO, ATELIER BOW-WOW, HIROSHI KIKUCHI, RYUJI NAKAMURA, HIDEYUKI NAKAYAMA THIS EXHIBITION OF ARCHITECTURE CONSISTS ENTIRELY OF NEW INSTALLATIONS BY SEVEN GROUPS OF JAPANESE ARCHITECTS, REPRESENTING A VARIETY OF AGES AND STYLES. TO CREATE “ARCHITECTURE,” ARCHITECTS ARE EXPECTED TO DEAL WITH A VARIETY OF CONDITIONS. THIS REQUIRES A WAY OF THINKING THAT DEFTLY BALANCES LOGIC, TECHNIQUE, AND AESTHETICS. ONE MIGHT ALSO ARGUE THAT THIS PROFOUND SENSE OF BALANCE IS WHAT HAS LED TO THE INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION OF JAPANESE ARCHITECTURE. IN TRYING TO DETERMINE THE SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF “ARCHITECTURE,” THEREFORE, EXAMINING WHERE AND IN WHAT FORM IT ARISES SEEMS MORE VIABLE THAN SIMPLY ADDRESSING THE QUESTION, “WHAT IS ARCHITECTURE?” IN THIS WIDE-RANGING GROUP OF INSTALLATIONS, INCLUDING A SPACE CREATED OUT OF THREE TYPES OF POLYHEDRONS, A PLACE WHERE A “SPACE” IS “BORN AND DIES,” A SUMMER HOUSE THAT RESEMBLES AN ANIMAL, A VIDEO SPACE THAT PRESENTS A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN ARCHITECTURAL MODEL, A FRAGILE STRUCTURE, AND A FIELD WITH A FANTASTIC SENSE OF SCALE, WE INVITE THE VIEWER TO SEARCH FOR THE “ARCHITECTURE” IN THESE WORKS. DATE: FROM 2010.04.29 TO 2010.08.08 PLACE: THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF MODERN ART, TOKYO OPENING HOURS: 10:00-17:00 (FRIDAY IS 10:00-20:00) *LAST ADMISSION IS 30 MINUITES BEFORE CLOSING.
