FROM THE SCOUT EXECUTIVE
I Believe in Scouting
A
s with every issue of Adventures in Scouting, I enjoy taking the time to share my perspective on the impact of Scouting in our council. Recently, I received an email from one of our Scoutmasters after some Scouts in his troop had a little trouble getting along. I felt compelled to share his story and would invite you to read his thoughts below and reflect on your role as a leader in our council.
I am a Scoutmaster. I believe in Scouting. I believe the Scout Oath and Law really are words and concepts to live by. I believe that if the young men in our country would really learn and understand and live by the points of the Law and Oath, our world would be a better place. I believe we would have a young generation ready to move up in those positions of leadership in our communities that have real character and values. The kind that stick. The kind that make others want to follow them.
COUNCIL CALENDAR Just think about it. A Scout is: TRUSTWORTHY, LOYAL, HELPFUL, FRIENDLY, COURTEOUS, KIND, OBEDIENT, CHEERFUL, THRIFTY, BRAVE, CLEAN, REVERENT… You see, I volunteer in the Scouting program because it makes a difference. It can change the life of a boy. It can help him grow to be a man. A man with qualities and character that will lead him to care more about others than himself. Let’s face it, if we all thought of others first, our world would be quite different than it is now. The news would look different on TV. Politicians would be looking out for us instead of themselves. Neighbors would be helping neighbors. Can we change the world overnight? No, we cannot. But we can affect a change in the lives of a few boys. Then those boys can affect a change in the lives of those around them. It could grow into something amazing. I cry for my Scouts at times. I care that much for them. I am that disappointed when the lessons we try to teach fail to stick and the Scout falls into a bad behavior. It hurts me when I see one of them treat another wrongly. But I don’t quit. I will keep at it. I will help and lead all that I can. I will. Ben Stallings Scoutmaster, Troop 1428, Raytown, MO

COUNCIL NEWS
Scout City BBQ Serves Up Food and Fun On June 23, 2017, the Heart of America Council hosted the 19th annual Scout City BBQ in downtown Kansas City, MO at Barney Allis Plaza. Since 1998, the Scout City BBQ has raised more than $375,000 for Scoutreach in Kansas City—a program that helps more than 6,000 atrisk youth each year. Event proceeds allow inner city Scouts opportunities they might not otherwise have, like going to summer camp. This year’s Scout City BBQ served nearly 1,000 meals raising more than $43,000 for local Scouting programs. Special thanks to our volunteer committee and Plowboys BBQ for catering an amazing lunch. The 2017 Scout City BBQ was also one of the first stops for our new STEMovation Lab. This science, technology, engineering and math inspired portable training center features the latest educational tools to inspire Scouts to be creative. Inside this rolling laboratory, Scouts encountered cutting edge programs like software development, system engineering, 3D printing, laser cutting and etching, video drones and much more.
BSA Signs Memorandum of Understanding with Community of Christ
A
Scout’s “Duty to God” has been addressed by the BSA since the first Handbook for Boys was published in 1911 and continues to be an important aspect of Scouting today. On July 7, 2017, this Scouting pillar was supported as the Boy Scouts of America completed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Community of Christ in Independence, MO. Chief Scout Executive, Michael Surbaugh and Scott Murphy, director of field ministries for Community of Christ, recognized the relationship as an opportunity for both organizations to continue working together to instill strong values in youth. According to Community of Christ, the first Boy Scout troop west of the Mississippi River was started at the Stone Church, a Community of Christ congregation just a few hundred feet from where the Temple now stands. At least 60 Scouting units are affiliated with Community of Christ congregations across the country and 31 of those Scouting units are right here in Missouri. For more information on this memorandum of understanding, visit www.scoutingnewsroom.org.
Council Welcomes New Director of Field Service We are pleased to announce the selection of Dan Gelis as the new Director of Field Service for the Heart of America Council. Dan comes to our council from the Cascade Pacific Council headquartered in Portland, Oregon where he served the past three years as a Field Director. Prior to his time in Portland, Dan served with distinction on the staff of the Chief Seattle Council headquartered in Seattle, Washington. Dan is an Eagle Scout, Wood Badge trained, a Vigil Honor member in the Order of the Arrow and served for 13 years on summer camp staff. Please help us welcome Dan to our Heart of America Council family. 3

CAMPING & PROGRAMS
2018 Boy Scout Camp Draw We have wrapped up another successful year of Boy Scout camping in the Heart of America Council. Scouts in our council and out of council had a great time at the Theodore Naish and H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservations. Scouts completed a combined total of more than 32,000 merit badges this summer! Thank you to the staff and leaders for making 2017 another outstanding year of camping in our council. Now, it is time to start planning for 2018. The draw to determine the 2018 Boy Scout Camp placement for the Theodore Naish and H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservations begins this November. Please mark your calendar for the appropriate date. Scoutmasters and Committee Chairmen will receive a letter with more information the third week of September.

The draw is based on the number of Scouts and full-time leaders your troop camped in either 2016 or 2017 (whichever is greater) and will be camping in 2018. A representative for and/or designated by the troop must be present to place their ticket in the draw and be prepared to pay the required deposit of $50.00 per Scout and full-time leader. Troops will be placed in camp, session and campsite in the order of the draw, as space is available. The payment schedule will continue to be the same as past years; a $50.00 deposit is due with each reservation for Scouts and Full Time Leaders at the draw. The payment for ½ of the balance is due by Wednesday February 21, 2018 and final payment is due by Wednesday, April 18, 2018 with names of all campers. Please contact the Heart of America Council Camping Department with questions at 816-942-9333 or visit www.ScoutCamping.org.
Giving Back to Camp Naish Procter & Gamble Employees Make a Difference on the Reservation What a difference a day makes! From trimming trees to camp repairs, thank you to the more than 200 Procter & Gamble employees who spent a day this summer at Camp Naish to beautify our Reservation.
THE SCIENCE OF SCOUTING Boy Scout/Venturing STEM Camp Scouts discovered a whole new world of science and adventure at the Theodore Naish Scout Reservation this summer during Boy Scout and Venturing STEM Camp. With trips to Science City, Black & Veatch and more, participants worked toward the STEM NOVA awards and a number of other merit badges. Working on the welding merit badge with the Pipefitters Union, Scouts learned to work with metal, not something you get to do at every summer camp. With the engineering visits, Scouts also developed their own race cars…Think Pinewood Derby, but taken to the next level with motors, batteries and solar power. Scouts also got the chance to explore our new STEMovation Lab where they developed and designed their own 3D models. Make sure to keep an eye out for the 2018 STEM Camp dates this winter.

All Scouts Deserve a Trained Leader
FALL WOOD BADGE COURSE
UNIVERSITY OF SCOUTING
So, what training should a Scout Leader have? Most Scouters know how to start a campfire, pitch a tent, or render basic first aid. For a weekend outing you might be able to get by. You probably didn’t even need to take training to learn these skills. So, what skills does it take to plan a troop meeting, campout, campfire program, or conservation projects? What about coaching and mentoring your Scouts, managing conflict, problem solving, or teaching youth? At a Wood Badge course, you learn and practice these skills and so much more. The 2017 fall Wood Badge course in the Heart of America Council will be held September 15 – 17 and September 29 – October 1. Don’t let this opportunity slip by! We encourage you to recruit someone in your unit for this fantastic course before it’s too late. Fee before August 16 is $200, after that date the fee is $230. If you need more information or to register online visit www.hoac-bsa.org/ wood-badge or contact C5-307-17-2 Course Director, Kathy Cooper, at Kathy. woodbadge.17.2@gmail.com.

MIC-O-SAY NEWS
Tribe of Mic-O-Say Introduces Founder Tribal Guardian Program
T
he Council of Chieftains has authorized the establishment of the Tribal Guardian program. A significant element is the new Founder Tribal Guardian program, which harkens back to one of the great moments in the history of Mic-O-Say—the Twelve Pieces of Wampum campaign that built the Great Hall. Most Tribesmen are aware of the story. In 1943, Medicine Man Swift Eagle (Chuck Henion) proposed the construction of the Great Hall as a memorial to honor Tribesmen who lost their lives in World War II. But rather than take large sums of money from a few donors, Henion called upon each Tribesman to give Twelve Pieces of Wampum to support the construction of the Great Hall. One thousand Tribesmen heeded his call at that time.

National Leadership Seminar
The Founder Tribal Guardian program allows every Tribesman the opportunity to participate equally with every other Tribesman in the construction of our new Tribal Records Center, and improvements to Parry Lodge. To become a Founder Tribal Guardian, a Tribesman is asked to commit a one-time gift of $100, or a pledge of $10 per month for one year. Every Founder Tribal Guardian will have his or her name placed inside the cornerstone of the new Tribal Records Center—as a symbol of becoming a part of the Tribe’s foundation. And each Founder Tribal Guardian will be awarded a unique recognition that can be worn on your Tribal attire—or on your Class A uniform. The Founder Tribal Guardian program will only be accepting donations until 5,000 Tribesmen commit to participate. Visit www.hoac-bsa.org/ tribal-guardian or text FOUNDER to 91999 to complete your gift. You can also mail your gift to the Heart of America Council Service Center.
Since the 1970’s, the National Order of the Arrow Committee has crafted one of the best weekend leadership trainings available in the nation—inside or outside of Scouting. This training is available only to Arrowmen and will be held in St. Louis, MO this year. The 2017 National Leadership Seminar is scheduled for October 20–22. Make plans now to attend, as spots fill up fast. More information is available at www.Tamegonit.org. 2018 National Order of the Arrow Conference NOAC is the largest gathering of Arrowmen in the nation. During your time at NOAC you will have the chance to meet over 8,000 Arrowmen from across the country. The next NOAC will be held July
30 – August 4, 2018 at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. There are ceremony and dance team competitions. There is an awesome OA Trading Post and NOAC hosts the second largest patch trading event (first being the National Jamboree). There are exhibitors with the latest in camping and outdoor equipment and High Adventure trip planning that you can go on. Interested in the history of OA? See it in the Museum of OA and Scouting History. NOAC not only has lots of fun opportunities, but it’s educational too! You will attend classes to improve your leadership skills that you can bring back to your unit and Lodge or learn what it’s like to be a Lodge Chief. Other classes include OATR training, helping the Boys in Blue, Webelos to Boy Scout crossover, conducting a Vigil Callout ceremony and many more For more information on attending the 2018 NOAC go to http://2018noac. kintera.org. 2017 Overland Park Police Explorers Camp is a Wrap! The first week in June was full of traffic stop scenarios, accident investigations, helicopters, obstacle courses, shooting simulations, and even criminal investigations. Well, it was if you are an Explorer with the Overland Park Police Department. Overland Park Police, Post 2986, recently held their annual Explorer Camp—a week-long event that ends with a challenge day where students get to show off everything they learned throughout the year. All Heart of America Council law enforcement posts are invited to attend the day to give the likeminded students a chance to network and share interests with a variety of other police explorers.
We are proud to announce that Maggie Bowers from Post 8000, Dodson Aviation in Ottawa, KS, received the National Aviation Exploring Scholarship. Maggie is planning to attend K-State Polytechnic to major in airport management starting this August, and says she aims to get her private pilot’s license as well. She says her love of aviation came about because “My father introduced and nurtured my love of aviation from a young age by taking me to Airventure in Oshkosh many times in my child and teenage years. Airplanes have and will always amaze me even though I know the science behind how something so big is able to fly. Airplanes prove the fact that nothing is impossible no matter how improbable it seems.” Congratulations Maggie! For more information on Post 8000, head to www.airscouts.club
Interested in Giving Back to Exploring? There are many ways for volunteers to get involved with Exploring! Committees, service team/commissioners, and new posts all help grow the Exploring program in Kansas City! Contact Exploring Executive, Chelsea Wales for more information.

Revised campout requirements for Second Class, First Class take effect August 1
T
he number of overnight campouts required for a young man to earn the Second Class and First Class ranks will be reduced under new requirements that take effect Aug. 1, 2017. But the total number of camping nights a Boy Scout will experience in the program as he progresses toward the rank of Eagle Scout will not change. In 2016, alongside the release of the 13th edition of the Boy Scout Handbook, the BSA increased the number of campouts required for Second Class to three since joining from two. It increased the number of campouts required for First Class to six since joining from three. The Aug. 1, 2017, revisions return the number of overnight campouts to pre-2016 levels but preserve the amount of time spent outdoors. The change, the BSA says, maintains a focus on lifechanging outdoors experiences while recognizing that not all outdoor activities need to include overnight camping. Hikes, service projects and outdoor-heavy merit badges like Geocaching and Orienteering add to the adventure of being a first-year Scout. The changes leave untouched the Eagle-required Camping merit badge, which calls for at least 20 nights of camping. Because all camping nights since becoming a Scout can be used for this requirement—even those that count toward Second Class and First Class—the effect is that the total number of camping nights required to become an Eagle Scout is unchanged. And of course these are minimum overnight campout requirements. Many Scouts will choose to camp more frequently. Bryan Wendell, an Eagle Scout, is senior editor of Boys’ Life, Scouting and Eagles’ Call Magazines. Follow Bryan on Scouting at http://blog. scoutingmagazine.org

SCOUTING HISTORY
The Camp Osceola Canteen By Andy Dubill, Council Historian
I
n the early days of camp, as soon as dinner was over, most Scouts at Camp Osceola could be found at the canteen or “trading post” as the staff called it. Dick Schmidt (Chieftain Big Burning Feather) remembered that the campers used to run from the dining lodge to the canteen to purchase a bottle of pop, a candy bar (the favorite of this era was “Baby Snooks”) and a cup of ice cream. They cost five cents apiece and that ate up each camper’s daily spending limit of fifteen cents. Bob Merrill was on J.D. Hammontree’s office staff with Louie Chandler and Bob Bandelier and was assigned to sell items in the canteen after meals. “When the campers swarmed out of the dining lodge and raced to the canteen—we were ready for them,” he recalled. “We had three flavors of Nehi pop—grape, strawberry and orange—as well as three flavors of ice cream.” He recalled that, “we just took their paper scrip and gave them whatever we had on hand—there was no choice of flavors!” There were long lines to get served and the rule was that each Scout had a fifteen-cent limit on his purchases. The limit was imposed to try to ensure that everyone could enjoy a treat. Scouts were served quickly and the health staff was not overrun with stomachache cases. Several times a session, the campers lined up for a “police call” to clean the empty pop bottles and other trash out of camp.

Ready to Recruit! It is that time of the year again! The time kids look forward to each fall…the start of the new school year! As of June 30, the Blue Elk District showed a growth in Cub Scouts by 13%. That is a great showing of how strong and fun our program is. Also, it is due in part to the great fall recruiting the district had in 2016 and how well our units retained the Scouts they served. Even though Blue Elk is ahead of last June, the District Committee and the Membership Committee is not stopping there! Over the next few months, both Cub Scout Packs and Boy Scout Troops will have an opportunity to share their message about Scouting. Help us continue to be successful in having more youth served by our program. We invite your unit leadership to join us and give all youth the chance to join our wonderful program.

Frontier District took the fun directly to the Scouts in June and July with our Mobile Day Camps! There were seven different Mobile Day Camp locations this summer, in addition to more than twenty summer program sites, allowing Scouts all over the metro to enjoy safe Scouting fun in their own community. Mobile sites included Boys and Girls Clubs, Community Centers, and churches across both Kansas and Missouri. The youth who participated in Mobile Day Camp got to climb the mobile climbing tower, explore the new STEMovation Lab, and learn useful Scout skills.
Golden Eagle Day Camp June 26 – 29, Golden Eagle held Day Camp at the Atkins-Johnson Farm and Museum. Day Camp was a success with program activities, a bee demonstration, and STEMovation Lab! Thank you to all the volunteers from staff to Walking Leaders that made this year’s Day Camp full of fun and excitement even through the rain!

Does your pack or troop want, or even need more families? The best way to get them is to recruit the entire family! This fall, the High Trail District is planning on growing the Scouting program and to do this, leaders in the district will be helping units put on School Nights for Scouting, and new parent orientation meetings to help get these new Scouting families used to the program that we have come to love. Did you know there is an even easier way to get families to register for Scouting? BeAScout.org now has the ability to register new youth in packs and troops, as well as adults! Have a question on how it works or what tools you can get to help build your pack or troop? Contact your district’s membership team, or professionals.

School Night for Scouting Our School Night for Scouting Campaign is one of the most important efforts of the district and council. When we recruit new Cub Scouts, we introduce them, and their families, to a whole world of fun, leadership, and character development every youth deserves to experience. And this year, the Iron Horse District will be conducting School Nights in a whole new way to the District. In 2016, the Gardner-Edgerton School District conducted a district-wide recruitment, and they were able to reach 23% more youth than in 2015. That’s an impressive feat. Modeling the district after the Gardner-Edgerton campaign, it is believed we could have Cub Scout growth for the first time in many years. We appreciate your continued support and encouragement during this campaign. Visit hoac-bsa.org/iron-horse-membership for all 2017 Recruitment Nights

Special thanks to Lauren Grant, Sue Braunchsweig and Vern Braunschweig and all the adults who helped man stations and our Walking Leaders for putting on another successful Day Camp! Lone Bear Fall Recruitment Drive August and September are the main recruiting months, especially for Cub Scouts. Please take the time to start planning your successful fall recruitment drive. Plan on being at your school’s open house or meet the teacher night to recruit for your unit. Do everything possible to promote these events. Utilize social media, school marquees, carnivals, flyers, boy talks, yard signs, newspaper articles, and anything else that you can think to use. We have to make sure we recruit at any and every opportunity that we can. Together, as a team, we will achieve our membership goals once again and remain a leader in the Heart of America Council. 27

The Northern Lights leadership team is doing all they can to ensure that every unit has the information and resources they need for a great fall recruitment. Part of this preparation is the District School Night Kick-off, which will be held at 7:00 pm on August 1 at the Pizza Shoppe in Platte Woods. It is highly encouraged that at least one of the unit’s key 3 and the unit membership chair attend. Please contact Anthony Gonnello, the Northern Lights District Executive, with the number of leaders that will be in attendance.

Calling all Webelos and their families! You are personally invited to meet the troops in Shawnee Trails! Not all Boy Scout troops are the same, and we encourage you to meet multiple troops, to see which one fits your interests! Boy Scout troops—come and sell your troop! Get creative and showcase the exciting adventures your Scouts are doing!
Almost 400 Cub Scouts had an adventure of a lifetime at Cub Scout Day Camp in June! Shawnee Riverfront Park turned into Cubcraft Minecraft and Cubs and adults survived the wind and heat! A Big thank you to Dave Sultz for his 20 years of leading Day Camp and all his staff and volunteers that made the week a success.

CubCrafters at Camp Timberlake Our Day Camp was a huge success this year! We surpassed our attendance projection by over 100 Cub Scouts! Thank you to all of our volunteers, without you this wouldn’t have been possible! Thanks again to Camp Timberlake for hosting us once again! Looking ahead we’re currently assembling our team for next year, if you had a great time at Day Camp and want to help out in any way next year please email Tori LoGrasso at tori.lograsso@scouting.org.
Pop! Pop! Pop! It’s Popcorn time! Has your unit signed up for this year’s popcorn sale yet? If not be sure to head over to www.hoac-bsa.org/popcorn and get
signed up! We’ll have our first training on August 12th at Cerner Riverport Campus and the Overland Park training on August 19th at the OP Convention Center—you don’t want to miss this training!
School’s Back In Session...Almost! With school night fast approaching be sure you have all of your marketing materials ordered through the district and that you’re planning to be at the August Resource Forum where we’ll give a refresher of what to do for school night success. Another way to get a jump on recruiting is to attend your school’s Back to School Night or Meet the Teacher Night—set up a table and get your pack’s info out there!

Fantastic Day Camp & Fall Recruitment Over 160 kids came out to the Spirit Trail Day Camp in June. The CubCraft theme was a huge hit, and everyone enjoyed archery, slingshots, the bosun chair, tie-dye, and so much more. A huge congratulations to Camp Director, Laura Crotty and Program Director, Pat Harvey for earning 100% on camp accreditation for the second year in a row! With summer winding down, it’s time to get ready for Fall recruitment! School nights will start the third week of August and run through the middle of September.

Summer is Flying By! We are gearing up for fall and for our recruitment season. Twin Rivers is proud to announce the School Night Kick-off on August 3 to plan this year’s recruitment. All packs should have at least 2 representatives there and all troops should have at least 1. Come check out all the exciting plans we have for the fall and win a few prizes. With summer coming to a close now is the time to get your unit signed up to go to the Scouting 500. There is now an activities guide out on the council website and on the Twin Rivers Facebook page. If you are not connected to the Twin Rivers Facebook page please check it out. We have 2 new moderators so you will see lots of good information and what the units in our district are doing. If you have anything you would like to see on there please send it to Katie.Dalton@scouting.org. 31
