FROM THE SCOUT EXECUTIVE
The Road Ahead…
S
o how does a century old organization like Scouting remain relevant in a constantly changing society and why is this important? For those of us who have been involved in Scouting in our youth; have had youth in the program; or served as a volunteer, there is no question that you can see the positive impact that participating in Scouting will have on the life of a boy. We are very fortunate in the Heart of America Council to have outstanding camping facilities for all ages of Scouts. When a Scout participates in one of these camping experiences, they learn how to better interact with other youth and leaders. They learn how to problem solve and ultimately they become more self-sufficient in their own lives. I’ve always said that part of the Boy Scout’s longevity and success in serving the youth in our communities is moving forward with, not ahead of or behind, societal norms.. One of the things that has remained constant in our history is that Scouting has always and will continue to be the premier youth development organization. No matter your background, if your behavior is consistent with the Scout Oath and Law there is a place for you in the Boy Scouts. The National Council is currently studying how to make Scouting more accessible
COUNCIL CALENDAR to all families and to bring the benefits of Scouting to the greatest number of youth possible. The National Council is looking at options that would enable Scouting to maintain the strength of single-gender programs while working to meet the needs of today’s families—all while remaining true to our core mission and values, outlined in the Scout Oath and Law. Obviously, this is a long-term process and discussions on this topic will continue throughout this year. Why do I share all this with you? This August and September, thanks to the help of many volunteers, we will recruit over 5,000 new Cub Scouts into the Scouting program. Character building, leadership development, self-reliance and community service are what defines Scouting. As I have shared before, think about what our communities would look like without the Boy Scouts. We are proud to be the largest youth serving agency in the greater Kansas City area, but with this pride comes the responsibility to ensure we are remaining relevant as a program for our youth.

Lee’s Summit Scout Honored by American Legion Named Missouri Eagle Scout of the Year
H
is accolades are beyond impressive—Now, this Lee’s Summit Scout can also add American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year to his resume. Camron Haas was selected by the American Legion Department of Missouri earlier this year as their Eagle Scout of the Year for his exceptional leadership in Scouting and community service. Camron received the highest score among all Missouri applicants and will be honored at the Legion’s state convention this July in Jefferson City, MO. He will also be eligible to compete for the American Legion’s National Eagle Scout of the Year which will be announced in August at the Legion’s national convention. Camron is a member of Troop 42 chartered by Woods Chapel Community of Christ in Lee’s Summit. Camron has held almost every leadership role within his troop including Senior Patrol Leader. He earned the rank of Eagle at the age of 14, received the National Outdoor Activity award in camping and has received two Gold Scouting Participation Medals for his work with special needs Scouts. Community service is very important to Camron. He has been an active participant with the City of Lee’s Summit’s Youth Court for the past 4 years where he has served in numerous roles, but primarily as the prosecuting attorney. He also serves as a board member and active volunteer in the service organization, TEENS 4 GOOD. Camron has been a youth counselor for the past two years at the Lee’s Summit Rotary Camp for special needs Scouts and is excited to return this summer. Camron is a senior at Blue Springs South High School and competes on the varsity debate team and the varsity golf team. He is a member of the Mock Trial Team and has qualified to attend the state tournament in St. Louis. He is a member of HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) and will be competing in the HOSA state debate tournament in Rolla. Camron has a 4.2 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. When thinking about a career choice, he took into consideration his love of science and how much he enjoys helping others. After doing some research Camron decided that a job in the field of pharmacy would be a good fit. He will be attending the University of Missouri-Kansas City this fall and was 1 of 40 freshmen accepted into the School of Pharmacy’s Early Assurance Program.

Scouts Plant Nearly 2,000 Trees Across Kansas City Heartland Tree Alliance Academy
S
couts are putting down roots in our community…literally! On April 22 and May 6, 174 Scouts and volunteers planted 1,919 trees across Kansas City as part of the Heartland Tree Alliance Academy. The annual event includes everything from planting demos to conservation best practices and allows Scouts to earn their Forestry Merit Badge and a few community service hours. Over the past year, our partnership with Heartland Tree Alliance has helped plant 3,489 trees across Kansas City.

DIG DAY Scouts and KC Parks Plant 18,000 Flowers on Mother’s Day Weekend
G
iving back is a staple of the Scouting program and on Saturday, May 13, Heart of America Council Scouts and Kansas City Parks and Recreation helped make Kansas City even more beautiful. 500 Scouts, volunteers, and KC Parks employees celebrated Dig Day by planting more than 18,000 flowers across 100 of the city’s community flower beds on Mother’s Day weekend. More than just beautifying Kansas City, Dig Day also helps save the city time and money. What would normally take Kansas City Parks about two months to complete, Scouts were able to complete in just half a day. Special thanks to everyone who helped dig in to make a difference, especially our sponsor, Suburban Lawn & Garden.

Alumni Pro Series
Eagle Scouts: Where Are They Now?
The Heart of America Council’s Alumni Association is now connecting Scouting alumni through careers across Kansas City. The first-ever Alumni Pro Series event kicked off this spring
Eagle Scouts are everywhere. They are doctors, architects, entrepreneurs, lawyers and bankers. In an effort to honor the Eagle spirit and legacy, “Eagle Scouts: Where Are They Now?” highlights adult Eagle Scouts in Kansas City. Chris Constant Eagle Scout Class of 1999 Troop 50 | Kansas City, Missouri
at Commerce Bank. Scouting alumni from multiple banks throughout the metro participated. Organizer Matt Koch, Assistant Vice President, Commerce Bank; Capital Markets Group, conceived the idea to bring Scouting alumni from the banking industry together on a regular basis to network and share ideas on how to further Scouting in our council. “As a 31 year-old Eagle Scout who was involved in Scouting, I felt this networking event would be a fantastic way to connect bankers across Kansas City.” Learn about upcoming Pro Series events or join our alumni association for FREE at HOACAlumni.org.
Chris Constant is currently a manager in the Supervision and Risk Management Division at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. As a youth, Chris served six summers on the Bartle Camp Staff from 2000 to 2006. He received his bachelor’s degree and Masters of Business Administration from the University of Missouri – Columbia. Chris remains active in Scouting and is currently a Keeper of the Wampum in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say.
What were your favorite Scouting activities? Chris: My most memorable summers growing up were the years that I worked on the summer camp staff at Bartle in Camp Piercing Arrow. I worked as an ecology lodge instructor and director (but never liked snakes!), Mic-O-Say Counselor, and Program Director. I met so many great people and had an awesome experience.
What was your favorite merit badge? Chris: I’ve always enjoyed the ideas of saving, investing, and personal finance. Personal Management merit badge taught me skills related to these areas, including goal setting and budgeting. Because of the skills that the badge introduces, it’s no wonder why the badge is Eagle required.
What point of the Scout Law is most important to you? Chris: A Scout is Friendly. Life can be short and hectic, and we should cherish the relationships and people that we love. Even more, we should seek friendship and understanding with those that may be different than us.
What does being an Eagle Scout mean to you? Chris: Being an Eagle Scout is a lifelong commitment to the ideals of Scouting. It reminds me to not only do my best, but to be my best. Do you know an Eagle Scout that would like to be featured in Adventures in Scouting? Contact Matt Armstrong at (816) 569-4978 or matt.armstrong@ scouting.org.

Ten Commandments Trek Highlights Scouting’s Many Paths to God
O
in Leawood, KS, where they learned the final two commandments, and received a private tour of the new sanctuary and impressive stained glass window by Youth Minister, Dave MaGee.
n Sunday, April 23, more than sixty Scouts, adult leaders and parents gathered at Leawood’s Beth Shalom synagogue to start their day-long Ten Commandments Trek. After joining morning services, the Scouts learned the first two Commandments from Rabbi Glickman, Beth Shalom’s Senior Rabbi. The day-long trek was coordinated by Norman Kahn, Jewish Chaplain in the Heart of America Council.
The purpose of the Trek was to fulfill the line in the Scout Oath, “Duty to God”, and the twelfth point of the Scout Law, “Reverent.” At the same time, the Scouts experienced the strong message that Scouting recognizes many paths to God, and that each of these faiths share a common ancestry and history.
Throughout the day, the Scouts went to four more houses of worship in Kansas City, learning about two of the Ten Commandments at each stop. The group went to Catholic Mass at St. John Francis Regis Church, led by Boy Scout Chaplain and Catholic Deacon, Ken Albers. They then joined the Islamic Society of Greater Kansas City for afternoon prayers at the mosque in eastern Kansas City, where they were welcomed by Muslim Scouting Chaplain and Heart of America Council Board Member, Mahnaz Shabbir, and taught by Ashan Latif, an Eagle Scout and lawyer in Lawrence, KS, who is President of the Crescent Peace Society.
NE W!
The group went from there to the Mormon meeting house in Kansas City, MO, for teaching led by LDS Scouting Chaplain, Jim Scott. The Scouts finished at the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection

SCOUT DAY AT THE K
Scout Day at the K Welcomes 12,000 Scouts Despite a soggy start, more than 12,000 Scouts and their families packed Kauffman Stadium on April 30 for Scout Day at the K— one of the largest Scouting events in the country. Scouts threw out the first pitch, received VIP early access to the stadium, served as color guard, participated in a pregame parade and helped collect enough canned food and cash donations to provide 5,573 meals for Harvesters—The Community Food Network.
Kansas City community. This year’s recipients were David Dillon—Retired, Chairman & CEO, Kroger Company; Bishop James Johnston—Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph; Doug Price—President, Price Brothers Management Company; Seth Sinovic—Professional Soccer Player, Sporting Kansas City; Willard Snyder—Attorney/Chairman, The Breidenthal-Snyder Foundation. The award and Kauffman Stadium are named for Eagle Scout Ewing M. Kauffman. Check out our Flickr Page at www.flickr.com/hoacbsa for more of our favorite Scout Day at the K photos.
But more than just a day at the ballpark, the event also recognized area Eagle Scouts. The presentation of the Ewing M. Kauffman Distinguished Eagle Scout Award is a Scout Day tradition and honors adult Eagle Scouts for their positive contributions to the

INTERNATIONAL SCOUTING
A TASTE OF ISRAEL Israel Scout Caravan Returns to Kansas City The Israel Scouts Friendship Caravan is making tour stops in Kansas City again this summer. Two performances will be held at the Jewish Community Center in Overland Park on Thursday, July 13 at 2:30 pm and at 7:00 pm. A performance will also be held at the Theodore Naish Scout Reservation on Friday, July 14 following the evening meal. There is no charge to attend any of these performances. Each show will include songs in Hebrew, English and Yiddish, bringing a lively, fun-filled taste of Israel and International Scouting to Kansas City. Each Friendship Caravan consists of five male and five female Israeli Scouts. This is the only organized and ongoing Scout entertainment corps program in the world. First started in 1973, it is staffed entirely by Scouts, and travels throughout North America each summer. Learn more about the Israel Scouts Friendship Caravan at www.israelscouts.org/friendship-caravan.
Jamboree on the Trail Scouts from the Pelathe District participated in the International Scouting event “Jamboree on the Trail” on May 13 by hiking at Clinton Lake State Park in Lawrence, Kansas. “Jamboree On The Trail” is an annual day for the World Scout Movement to hike together. Began in 1998 in the United Kingdom, it invites all Scouts across the world to participate. This year JOTT celebrated its 20th year and more than 15,000 hikers around the globe participated. The Lawrence hike led by Karen Lewis and Trudy Rubick, took Scouts and adults 2.3 miles along a combination of the Blue, Red and White North Shore trails. The leaders shared information about the history of the park and some of the wildlife within it.
Maskovich Named New Naish Director
Scouts Earn Citizenship in the World Merit Badge at WWI Museum
We are pleased to announce the selection of Pete Maskovich as the new Theodore Naish Scout Reservation Director. Pete began his Scouting career as a District Executive at the Sequoia Council in Fresno, California. He moved on to become a Senior District Executive and later Program Director with the Sequoia Council. He was promoted to District Director and later Field Director with the Transatlantic Council in Brussels, Belgium. Pete is an Eagle Scout who enjoys the outdoors, fishing, and playing golf. Pete and his wife, Lisa, have been happily married for 13 years. Please help us welcome Pete and Lisa to the Heart of America Council.
51 Scouts spent this spring at the National World War I Museum and earned their Citizenship in the World merit badge. The Scouts, from 23 different troops, spent several hours working with eight Merit Badge Counselors to earn the badge. Scouts also received a 90-minute private guided tour of the museum’s main gallery. After the completion of the merit badge in the afternoon, Scouts received the opportunity to return to the main galleries for additional time to look around, visit the special exhibits in the two original museum buildings, or check out the Kansas City skyline from the top of the 217-foot tower.
twice each year—spring and fall. The fall date has not been set, but Scouts can receive additional information on Scouting opportunities at the National World War I Museum by contacting H. David Pendleton at Henry.D.Pendleton. ctr@mail.mil.

BSA Releases Exploration Merit Badge Sorry, Captain Kirk, but these days, Scouts and former Scouts are the ones who “boldly go where no man has gone before.”
The primary goal is that the Scout learns something, plans the trip (with his counselor’s OK) and has fun.
Eagle Scouts explore the world through opportunities like the National Eagle Scout Association’s World Explorers Program.
He’ll do this by following the same steps used by professional explorers and scientists: ▶ Develop a concept ▶ Obtain necessary ▶ Do the research documents ▶ Select a team ▶ Understand legal ▶ Create an exploration considerations agenda ▶ Establish record▶ Secure expedition keeping procedures financing ▶ Follow outdoor ethics ▶ Gather equipment guidelines ▶ Make communication ▶ Take the actual trip and transportation plans ▶ Prepare a report ▶ Establish safety/first-aid ▶ Hold an afterprocedures action review
What Scouts will do
That’s why it’s fitting for the BSA to introduce a new merit badge: Exploration. The badge—the 137th on the BSA’s list of currently available merit badges— celebrates the spirit of adventure that has inspired Scouts for more than a century.
After learning about the history and importance of exploration, Scouts plan, prepare for and go on an actual expedition. The expedition need not be to Mount Everest or the Marianas Trench. Scouts must plan and take a trip to somewhere of interest to them; it can be close by or far away. It can be a troop activity or a small-scale excursion.
That spirit helped Eagle Scout Paul Siple, who coined the term “wind chill,” travel to Antarctica with Adm. Richard Byrd in 1928. It helped Eagle Scout Neil Armstrong land on the moon in 1969. And it helps today’s
Once there, the Scout will study something. Maybe he’ll analyze a location’s animal population, classify plant species at a state park or explore the effects of drought on an area.

SCOUTING HISTORY
The Songs of Camp Naish By Andy Dubill, Council Historian
W
hat would summer camp be without the songs? One of the earliest Camp Naish songs was written in 1936 by James Sussex of Kansas City, Kansas. The following song was adopted for use by campers at Camp Naish and documented in the Camp Naish Campfire Manual compiled by James Putnam of Emporia, Kansas: To Camp Naish Hiking along together On our way to old Camp Naish Full of pep and vim and dash. We’re going to camp together, For a whole week of fun. We’ll laugh and play and day by day We’ll make new friends galore! We’ll do the things we like the best And do them more and more. Oh! Hiking along together On our way to old CAMP NAISH! Hiking along together.
Years later in the mid 1950’s a new camp song was being utilized on the Reservation. The new Camp Naish song was written in 1954 on the way to the National Order of the Arrow Conference. Jim Miller, Cliff Thompson and Jim Feil were the driving force behind the song that has become an institution at camp. In the 1950’s the camp had no official song at the time, but as a joke on a K-State staff member, the words of the KU alma mater were modified. The Camp Naish song has been sung at campfires ever since... High above the broad Kaw Valley, Stands the camp we love. Mid the elm and tall oak branches, With God’s sky above. Here we say that on our Honor, We will ever be, Loyal Scouts and ever faithful Dear Camp Naish to thee. If you have questions about Scouting history that would be good topics for future columns email Andy Dubill at adubill@aol.com.

Ambassador of Scouting On May 25, the Blue Elk District held its annual Ambassador of Scouting Award Dinner. The highlight of the evening was to recognize two individuals who have made an impact in the lives of Scouting’s youth. The first honoree recognized was Dale Carter, our 2017 Ambassador of Scouting. Dale Carter is a Blue Springs District 1 Councilman and the program manager/co-host of the Dale Carter Morning Show on KFKF, 94.1 FM. Dale is also the voice of the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. Our second honoree, Scott Young was recognized with the 2017 North Star Award. Scott’s career in education has spanned 38 years and he has announced his retirement as the Deputy Superintendent of the Blue Springs School District. Scott has dedicated his professional life to the service of others, hoping to impact the local community and the world at large in a positive way. School Night for Scouting 2017! Congratulations Shawnee Trails!!! During our 2016 School Nights for Scouting, over 550 Cub Scouts were recruited! That is almost twice as many Cub Scouts as the year before which was possible because of dedicated pack leaders and School Night presenters! In order to continue growth in Cub Scouts, it is time to prepare for School Night for Scouting 2017. Be prepared for your School Night, plan your pack calendar before the end of the summer, plan to promote at a back-toschool event, and select a School Night coordinator. School Night dates for the fall will be coordinated by Jenna Bentrop and Lauren Crowder. Like last year, School Night dates will be held during the last two weeks of August. Shawnee Trails will hold a School Night Kick-Off on July 27th. Be on the look-out for more details coming soon!

With school being out, it’s easy to forget about all that Scouting brings to the table. Make sure you are keeping in contact with your unit to stay updated on all the great things they are doing over the summer. Packs… check out the Twin Rivers Activities page for more information about the Summertime Pack award. Troops…Camp is coming!
