Lafayette

Community Center Recently, the City of Los Angeles and Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA), have forged a precedent setting partnership to renovate and expand Lafayette Park. When the expansion and renovations are completed in late Winter 2009, the community will benefit from a field turf soccer field, stateof-the-art gymnasium, wireless computer lab, classrooms and community meeting rooms, as well as HOLA’s existing art studios, fine arts library, dance studio, digital media center and education learning center. The partnership will provide supplemental recreation and enrichment programming to develop the physical, social, and emotional well being of the entire community. While Lafayette Community Center is under construction, park programming will be limited and held at nearby locations, inclucing MacArthur Park and Heart of Los Angeles.

Academics

Elementary - SmartStart After School

SmartStart is an elementary education program for youth in grades first through fifth that provides individualized academic support and daily enrichment opportunitues. SmartStart’s academic support consists of homework assistance, 1:1 tutoring, weekly learning centers and additional in-school support for students and their families. Enrichment opportunities include experiences with the arts, music, choir, cooking, sports, technology and science. Middle School - Daytime Bridges

HOLA Bridges Daytime is a middle school inter-session enrichment program that renews students’ interest in academics through experiential learning and civic participation. Participants attend six hours a day, five days a week for for the entirety of their eight week vacation, receiving instruction in music, fine arts, leadership, PE, academic tutoring, as well as going on enrichment field trips and participating in service learning projects. Middle School - Bridges After-School

The HOLA Bridges After-School Program offers middle school youth individualized and group tutoring sessions that are designed to prepare students for academic success. In addition to educational opportunities, participants choose from a variety of enrichment activities, including media arts, sports, and visual and performing arts. On Fridays, participants engage in educational and recreational field trips, including visits to local colleges and universities. High School- Rope

Heart of Los Angeles Rites of Passage Encounter (ROPE) is a high school program that focuses on assisting students to acquire key life skills and preparing students to become healthy, responsible, and socially conscious adults. Elementary Creative Writing

Students will learn to write clear and coherent sentences and paragraphs that develop a central idea. Students will learn to use graphic organizers to organize and focus on a central idea and to write simple supporting facts or ideas. Also, students will write compositions that describe and explain familiar objects, events, and experiences. Art

Physical Education

Students will be developing and be aware of their gross motor skills. Also, students will be involved with many different movement concept activities using both their upper and lower body muscles. Music

History Mysteries

Students will learn about the location and rise of the Roman Republic, including important mythical, architectural, and historical figures. Start Something

This program addresses three national priorities: character education, volunteer service and career exploration. Through participation in Start Something, students define a specific personal goal and develop an action plan to achieve it while giving back to their community and exploring careers that fit within their areas of interest. Express Yourself

Whether it’s through art, music, poetry, or sketching students should be given the chance to discover their personalities in one classroom setting. We will investigate a variety of artistic styles, writing styles, songs, and some specific people who inspired each talent. By the end of the club, students will hopefully be inspired to examine their own creative skills and tap into a talent that they haven’t quite discovered yet. Martial Arts

Students will learn how to defend themselves both physically and mentally. Middle School Drawing

Ceramics

Students explore the fundamentals of drawing. They draw from observation, copies of master drawings and from their imaginations. The class is geared towards the individual needs and levels of the student.

This club explores two dimensional and three dimensional forms of both functional and non-functional pieces. Students will learn the basics of hand building through various projects, and the wheel is taught on a one to one basis.

Afro-Brazilian Dance

Students will learn a combination of rhythms brought from Africa, along with other Caribbean rhythms, Samba , and Reggae. Project Learn

Beginner Sewing

Taught by HOLA moms, students will learn basic sewing skills and create a pillow, book bag, purse and a simple garment. Students will learn to read a pattern, cut, and sew using notions that make projects easy and fun. Young People

theatre Workshop Combines sports participation with an educational intervention that focuses on reducing and preventing the potential hazards of dealing with adolescent issues in unhealthy ways. The sports environment provides girls with experiences of teamwork, goal-setting, positive adult mentoring and leadership training.

Photography

Printmaking

Printmaking will explore three methods of making prints, monograph (watercolor), dry-point, and linoleum cut printmaking. Each technique will be explored for at-least two class sessions on its own. Kids News Channel

The course will aim to teach students how to find, research, prepare and broadcast news stories. The class with include brainstorming ideas, discussing current events, creating a stage for our “newsroom,� interviewing possible sources and working as a team to film a News Webcast that focuses on important local/national/international issues that are constantly changing our world. High School College Application Workshop

This class will center on pairing high school seniors with a mentor who will assist them with the college application process. This class will particularly help students navigate through the personal statement portion of admissions.

Fashion Etiquette

This course will educate students on proper dress etiquette for various situations and learn the difference between formal, business, and casual attire. Students will also take a field trip to the fashion museum and be taught self empowerment through dress.

Computer Basics

This class will introduce students to basic computer skills and programs. Students will work on familiarizing themselves with Powerpoint, Excel, Word as well as work to improve their typing skills. CASHEE Prep

This class is mandatory for all freshman and sophomores and will prepare them for the CASHEE exam, the first important required exam in their high school careers. Athletics Central City Soccer AssN. This league provides instruction in a semi competitive environment with other nonprofit and L.A. Recreation & Park teams. League coaches provide high school / college style coaching and training to prepare our athletes for success in sports and in life.

Weight training/ aerobics Learn the correct way to use weights in your work out program. This will allow you to acquire the body size that you desire. Including aerobics in the class will improve endurance and keep your heart in top shape.
