Lafayette
Community Center Recently, the City of Los Angeles and Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA), have forged a precedent setting partnership to renovate and expand Lafayette Park. When the expansion and renovations are completed in late Spring 2010, the community will benefit from a field turf soccer field, stateof-the-art gymnasium, wireless computer lab, classrooms and community meeting rooms, as well as HOLA’s existing art studios, fine arts library, dance studio, digital media center and education learning center. The partnership will provide supplemental recreation and enrichment programming to develop the physical, social, and emotional well being of the entire community. While Lafayette Community Center is under construction, park programming will be limited and held at nearby locations, inclucing MacArthur Park and Heart of Los Angeles.

Elementary - SmartStart After School
SmartStart is an elementary education program for youth in grades first through fifth that provides individualized academic support and daily enrichment opportunitues. SmartStart’s academic support consists of homework assistance, 1:1 tutoring, weekly learning centers and additional in-school support for students and their families. Enrichment opportunities include experiences with the arts, music, choir, cooking, sports, technology and science. Middle School - Daytime Bridges
HOLA Bridges Daytime is a middle school inter-session enrichment program that renews students’ interest in academics through experiential learning and civic participation. Participants attend six hours a day, five days a week for for the entirety of their eight week vacation, receiving instruction in music, fine arts, leadership, PE, academic tutoring, as well as going on enrichment field trips and participating in service learning projects. Middle School - Bridges After-School
The HOLA Bridges After-School Program offers middle school youth individualized and group tutoring sessions that are designed to prepare students for academic success. In addition to educational opportunities, participants choose from a variety of enrichment activities, including media arts, sports, and visual and performing arts. On Fridays, participants engage in educational and recreational field trips, including visits to local colleges and universities. Physical Education

Intro

Loving Me, Loving Ourselves
This class will encourage students to appreciate their bodies and feel comfortable in their own shoes. As they navigate through high school they will be faced with issues about body image, through the media and with peers. In this class girls will be allow to express themselves through art, writing, and exercise. They will be allowed to share personal experiences and offer positive comments to their peers. With guidance they will find their individual qualities besides physical appearance. Students will also get a chance to see how celebrities are made “more” beautiful and skinny through Photoshop and films. As a final project, the girls will be assigned to create a piece of art outlining their new found qualities without mentioning anything about their physical appearance. Students are exposed to the material they will encounter on the SAT and develop disciplined strategies for approaching each section.
