Lafayette

Community Center Recently, the City of Los Angeles and Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA), have forged a precedent setting partnership to renovate and expand Lafayette Park. When the expansion and renovations are completed in Fall of 2010, the community will benefit from a field turf soccer field, stateof-the-art gymnasium, wireless computer lab, classrooms and community meeting rooms, as well as HOLA’s existing art studios, fine arts library, dance studio, digital media center and education learning center. The partnership will provide supplemental recreation and enrichment programming to develop the physical, social, and emotional well being of the entire community.

Programs

Elementary - SmartStart Summer Camp

SmartStart Summer Day Camp is an opportunity for local elementary students to go on adventures and engage in quality learning experiences. Campers will participate in swimming, theater, hands-on science, creative writing, art, math, and computer classes. We will travel to local museums and educational venues. Field trips will include destinationssuch as Griffith Park Observatory, Getty Museum, LACMA, and Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. Middle School - Daytime Bridges

HOLA Bridges Daytime is a middle school inter-session enrichment program that renews students’ interest in academics through experiential learning and civic participation. Participants attend six hours a day, five days a week for for the entirety of their eight week vacation, receiving instruction in music, fine arts, leadership, PE, academic tutoring, as well as going on enrichment field trips and participating in service learning projects. Middle School - Bridges After-School

The HOLA Bridges After-School Program offers middle school youth individualized and group tutoring sessions that are designed to prepare students for academic success. In addition to educational opportunities, participants choose from a variety of enrichment activities, including media arts, sports, and visual and performing arts. On Fridays, participants engage in educational and recreational field trips, including visits to local colleges and universities. Heart of Los Angeles Rites of Passage Encounter (ROPE) is a high school program that focuses on assisting students to acquire key life skills and preparing students to become healthy, responsible, and socially conscious adults. Elementary Discovery Crusaders

Physical Education

Students will learn about the different regions in the world through literature and theatre. In addition, the lessons will be focusing on phonics, writing, and comprehension skills.

Students will be involved with many different movement concept activities using both their upper and lower body muscles, helping to develop gross motor skills.

Students will learn about different mathematical concepts and logical reasoning to problems. Crafts/Art

with Food This class will be an introduction to the major food groups, and will act as a means to better explain why healthy food is the best food. The students will be given an introduction to the major types of organic molecules including bio molecules, amino acids, etc so as to better understand the consistencies of the foods we consume and why it is so important to do so properly. Students in grades 1-3 are introduced to beginning typing and 4-5 graders continue with intermediate typing. This club explores two dimensional and three dimensional forms of both functional and nonfunctional pieces. Architecture

Each week, students will visit a different neighborhood building, each with a story to tell. We’ll explore the people and places - why that building looks the way it does, who built it and why, and what it is used for today. Along the way, we’ll go on scavenger hunts, listen to music, draw sketches, and even cook, all while learning about the history, architecture and people that make Westlake one of L.A.’s most exciting neighborhoods! Mock Trial

Students will attend Bingham law firm in downtown to work closely with lawyers and learn how a trial works, from opening statements and witness questioning to closing arguments. At the end of the session, the mock trial is held in a real courtroom before a real judge with HOLA special guests and family. Printmaking

This class will explore the three methods of printmaking; monograph, dry point and linoleum cut printmaking. In addition to studio work, the class will discuss historical examples of printmaking and learn about artists who helped shape the media into an art. This summer come learn how to dance to different musical rhythms! For this class you do not need to be a good dancer, you just have to WANT TO DANCE! Video Gaming

Board Gaming

Students will enjoy a cool relaxing time from out door activities and engage in skill building. This league provides instruction in a semi competitive environment with other non-profit and L.A. Recreation & Park teams. League coaches provide high school / college style coaching and training to prepare our athletes for success in sports and in life. FSC Youth Soccer League

FSC youth soccer is a instructional & competitive league that gives pee – wee through minors foundation blocks to succeed in more of a competitive soccer environment.
