Volunteer Opportunities for Fall 2012 Tuesday, August 28th to Friday, December 14th Hundreds of lives get impacted day by day by the support of our volunteers. HOLA volunteers become part of our goal in providing our children a life full of positive development and new opportunities. We have many opportunities for this quarter in which you, a relative or a friend could help make a difference in the Los Angeles community. If you can give as little as one hour a week, we want you! SmartStart/Elementary School Elementary Tutors/Homework Assistance: We are looking for volunteers to help students with their homework assignments in subjects such as language arts, writing, math, science and social studies. Volunteers will provide one-to-one assistance when supplemental help is needed. Volunteer hours requested: Tutoring hours M – Thur from 2:30 pm to 6.00 pm and/or Friday 2.30 pm to 5.30pm.
Bridges/Middle School Middle School Tutors/Homework Assistance: We are looking for volunteers to help students with their homework assignments in subjects such as language arts, writing, math, science and social studies. Volunteers will provide one-to-one assistance when supplemental help is needed. Volunteer hours requested: Tutoring hours M & W from 4.00 pm to 6.30 pm and/or Tues & Thur 4.30pm to 5.30pm. Middle School Instructor: Create and teach your own enrichment class: We are looking for volunteers to instruct their own class utilizing their own skills. Instructor will be given the creative freedom to design their own curriculum and encouraged to bring new ideas and possibilities to the class. Possible classes can be a film, dance, foreign language, sport, science, video game, or comic book class. Volunteer hours requested: Monday or Wednesday 4.30 to 5.30 pm or 5.30 to 6.30pm (1 hour per week).
ROPE/High School High School Tutors/Homework Assistance: Volunteers are needed to help students with their homework assignments in subjects such as algebra, physics, calculus, geometry, biology, chemistry, economics, history, and English. Volunteers will provide one-to-one assistance when supplemental help is needed. Volunteer hours requested: Mon – Thur from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. We can work with the volunteer and create a consistent schedule.

SAT Tutor: Volunteers are needed to provide SAT Test preparation classes for an October 6, 2012 test. Volunteers will work with individual students or small groups and should have extensive knowledge in preparing students to take the SAT I. Days are flexible and open to scheduling with individual students. Volunteer hours requested: Mon – Fri from 4.00 pm to 6:00 pm. (1 – 1.5 hours a week) Writing Coaches: Volunteers are needed to help students with writing in creative ways. Volunteers will meet with up to 5 students assisting with writing assignments and creating fun and engaging reading and writing lessons based on the needs of the student. Hours to be arranged with student/s (typically 2 – 4 hours sometime during Monday – Thursday 4.30 – 6.30pm). Math Coaches: Volunteers are needed to help students with mathematics. Volunteers will meet with up to 5 students assisting with homework and developing a love of mathematics through creating fun and engaging math activities based on the needs of the student. Hours to be arranged with student/s (typically 2 – 4 hours sometime during Monday – Thursday 4.30 – 6.30pm). Workshop Series Facilitators: We are looking for volunteers to instruct a series utilizing their own skills. The series will enable students to critically analyze themselves, their situations, and their communities, in order to foster awareness, build a sense of community and empowerment among participants, and help students navigate academics and employment more easily. Instructor will be given the creative freedom to design their own curriculum and encouraged to bring new ideas and possibilities to the class. Volunteer must teach 2 – 3 Thursdays from 5pm – 7pm (total 4 – 6 hours). Lead Cooks: Volunteer class instructor needed to teach easy and affordable cooking basics. Volunteer will be given the freedom to create menus and do shopping with an allotted budget. Volunteer must have some experience in cooking for a group and should be able to create a safe and fun learning environment. Volunteer hours requested: Mondays 6pm – 7.30pm and possibly Wednesdays 6pm – 7.30pm (2 – 4 hours a week).
ART Teaching Artist: We are looking for committed individuals to assist our students and instructors in their classes. Volunteers will help prepare materials and mentor students. Volunteers do not need a background in art to get involved. Examples of classes that need assistance are painting, new media, paper crafts, sculpture, mixed media, printmaking, and/or ceramics. Volunteers are needed for at least one hour a week. Volunteer hours requested: Monday to Thursday 4.30 – 6.30 pm. (minimum 2 hours a week) Open Student Volunteer: As above: Friday 3.30 pm to 5.30pm. (2 hours per week) Tutor: We are looking for volunteers to provide homework support for Art Focus students. Volunteers will provide one-to-one assistance when supplemental help is needed. Volunteer hours requested: Mon to Wed from 3:30 - 4:30pm. Volunteer needed for at least one hour a week.

Music/YOLA at HOLA Music Homework Tutors and Class Assistants: Homework Tutoring Volunteers: YOLA at HOLA is in need of volunteers to assist students (grades 1-6) with completing and understanding their homework. Duties would include assisting the YOLA at HOLA Academic Tutoring Faculty, helping students who are struggling with homework, assisting students with special projects and acting as a positive role model and mentor. Volunteer hours requested: Any consistent weekly time(s) Monday-Thursday from 3-7pm or Friday 4-5:30pm. Orchestra Volunteers: YOLA at HOLA is in need of high-level musicians who play an orchestral instrument to come in and assist our beginning students (grades 1-6). Duties would include assisting teachers during rehearsals, conducting pull out lessons and acting as a positive role model and mentor. Requirements: High level of proficiency on instrument -College/professional music experience -Advanced high school musicians invited to interview -Amateur musicians with high proficiency invited to interview Instruments of need include: -Strings: Violin, Viola, Cello (String Bass welcome) -Brass: Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Euphonium -Woodwinds: Clarinet, Flute, Oboe, Bassoon Music Creativity and Choir Class Volunteers-YOLA at HOLA: YOLA at HOLA is in need of positive volunteers to assist lower elementary school grade students in Music Creativity and Choir Class. Duties would include assisting YOLA at HOLA faculty, learning alongside the students to model behavior, shadowing students with special needs and acting as a positive role model and mentor. Volunteer hours requested: Hours: Any consistent weekly time(s) Monday-Thursday from 3-7pm or Saturday from 9am-12pm -No knowledge of music required -Willingness to try and learn new things -Ability to connect with students as a positive role model and teacher assistant -Willingness to assist the teacher
PAT Program Homework Assistance and Tutoring: Volunteers will primarily tutor High School Junior students in Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, English, Grammar and writing with their homework assignments in subjects such as language arts, writing, math, science and social studies. They provide one-toone assistance when supplemental help is needed. Volunteer hours requested: M – W from 4:00 pm to 6 pm and Tues - Thur from 5pm-7pm. (minimum 2 hours per week)
Athletics Coach: Volunteers are needed to assist with coaching basketball and/or soccer. Volunteers must have some experience coaching youth and know the rules and regulations of the game/s. Volunteers must be consistent with their hours and availability. Volunteer hours requested: Monday to Friday 4 – 9pm and Saturdays 8am – 5pm (4+ hours per week). HOLA Opportunities 3 of 4
Alumni College Level Homework Tutor: Volunteers primarily help students with their homework assignments in subjects such as algebra, physics, calculus, geometry, biology, chemistry, economics, government, and English. They provide one-to-one assistance when supplemental help is needed. Tutoring hours are scheduled based on tutor and student availability.
