Volunteer Opportunities for Summer 2013 Monday, June 17th to Friday, July 26th Hundreds of lives get impacted every day because of the support of our volunteers. HOLA volunteers are vital to helping us provide our youth with a life full of positive development and new opportunities. We have many opportunities this summer for you to make a difference in the Los Angeles community. If you can give as little as three hours a week, we want you!

SmartStart (Elementary School students) Volunteers are needed to support staff with academic and enrichment classes and supervise students. Must enjoy working with children and have a professional demeanor. Volunteers must be consistent with their hours.

Bridges (Middle School students) Provide additional supervision of students during programming. Help with set-up and cleanup of classrooms. Help transport students from one activity to another. Act as a mentor and role model to students. Foster a safe, nurturing, and inspiring environment for HOLA youth. Must be professional with their responsibilities including being on time, focused, and respectful. Work collaboratively with the Bridges staff. Ability to be a strong role model for youth during all working hours.

PAT (High School students) Writing Tutor (4 hours/week)- Assist with writing assignments through brainstorming sessions; providing feedback on writing style, grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. Transition “Bigs”- “Bigs” are 11th and 12th grade students who share high school and college preparation experiences and engage in activities incoming 9th grade students. (*Must be a present or former PAT student.) Mentors - Support high school seniors over the course of the school year. Mentors guide students through the college application, scholarship, and financial aid process, as well as support the transition to freshman year. Weekly time commitment is approximately three hours a week. Academic Tutor (4 hours/week) Provide tutoring for Math (subjects ranging from Algebra I to Calculus), English Language Arts, Chemistry, Biology and History

Visual Arts Provide additional supervision of students during daytime activities. Contribute to the set-up and cleanup of the studio and gallery for activities. Help transport students from one activity to another. Act as a mentor to students. Participate in organizational events, such as exhibitions, fundraisers, artist talks, and workshops. Foster a safe, nurturing, and inspiring environment for HOLA youth. Work collaboratively with the Visual Arts staff. Position(s) Available

YOLA/Music Program Class Assistants- are needed to support staff with academic classes and supervise students. Volunteers must enjoy working with children and have a professional demeanor. Morning Stage Crew- Help with set up. Afternoon Stage Crew- Help break down initial set up. Music Volunteers- Volunteers will assist with the orchestral and choral learning of our students. -Highly skilled musicians (multiple years of training and practice) should send in their resume to cwitkowski@heartofla.org. Jazz band volunteer- Assist by playing in the ensemble with the big band -Assist big band director with transcribing parts, etc. -Assist by pulling sections out of the large ensemble to run sectionals. Beginning Rock band volunteer- Assist with beginning rock band class, where students with no previous knowledge of Rock Band will come together to perform a song after six weeks -email resumes to Cwitkowski@heartofla.org if you are interested. 1st Grade Academic assistant- assist teacher in classroom with special projects and tutoring -helping individual students with reading, math, writing -bringing your own ideas, talents and creativity into the classroom. Elementary Academic assistant- assist teacher in classroom with special projects and tutoring (helping individual students with reading, math, writing) bringing your own ideas, talents and creativity into the classroom. Physical Fitness Expert- runs a session with our students in small groups (ages 6-15) with a faculty member assisting to manage the classroom.

Athletics Program Summer Athletic Camp - Volunteers to teach soccer, football, basketball, or any other sport. Volunteers needed to assist HOLA’s athletics counselors with providing additional supervision of students and managing equipment. Programs change each week. Week 1 - Basketball Activities. Week 2 - Soccer Activities. Week 3 - Cross Fit 4 Kids. Week 4 - Volleyball Activities. Week 5 - Water Activities. Week 6 Basketball Camp. PE Volunteers- Volunteers are needed to assist HOLA’s athletics staff with our PE classes. Assist with teaching sports, exercises and supervising groups of children. Summer Night Lights Basketball & Soccer Coaches/Assistants- We need volunteers to assist the program with game set up and clean up. Need help with games: (keeping score table, organizing, and basic supervision).

Leadership •

Cooperative Play Facilitator-Volunteers need to be energetic, enthusiastic, playful, and interested in developing leadership and communication skills in themselves and youth. Requires two day in-house training.
