Ode to Autumn

HEN I WAsN'T chained to the phone and desk last month, I managed to relax at Zonta's Dusk on the Deck night of nights, sneak in a visit to the new Mary Cairncross scenic Reserve Discovery Centre, caught volunteers at work at the Museum and Landsborough enjoyed a sunrise ramble to the platypus viewing platform on the Maleny Trail. I also learnt that Visit sunshine Coast are powering with achievements for the region at their recent Conversations at Secrets on the Lake. Heatley joined Jo skinner from Narrows Escape for the joint initiative - Australia's Nature Coast Roadshow. Melbourne and sydney were buzzing - but ex-cyclone Debbie put a stop to their Brisbane interviews. We hope everyone was safe and sound during the deluge, and power/internet and phone back on. Thankfully ours returned in time to finish HT for the printer.

Both Eudlo and Mapleton Halls bring quality music to the locals, and Flaxton Garden and Lions put out their welcome mat for a not-tomiss dinner. ANZAC Day is almost here - I was pleased I was able to include not one, but two century-old tales - a letter and a newspaper extract. And requests from our readers regarding each one - I hope you can help? Think about your favourite newspaper when the Glassy Awards open on April 10 (nudge and wink!). We've loads of business stories in this issue also - focussed on foodies right through to respite care. I just wish I could fit in every request this month, and every month! Finally goodbye to the heat and humidity – and bring on some of Keats’ “mists and mellow fruitfulness”. I'm loving the warm days and cooler nights - thank you Autumn.

Tibrogargan or Glass House?

ECENTLy THE Queensland Redistribution Commission released proposed changes to the state Electoral boundaries which will ultimately aﬀect some of the Glass House electorate: • A proposed name change from Glass House to Tibrogargan • Palmwoods, Chevallum, and the small part of Landsborough that was in Glass House and Caboolture, would be in neighbouring electorates; and • Mooloolah, Rocksberg, Upper Caboolture, Ocean View and Moorina would be added to the electorate.

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell MP says, "The electorate is 90% the same as Glass House. I have eight years of connection, of success, of understanding the issues and of knowing what needs to be done in the electorate. “It is therefore my intention to contest the seat of Tibrogargan if the proposed changes go through and I want to assure all of you of my ongoing commitment to this region. “As I continue to catch up with individuals and groups around the electorate it’s pretty clear redistributions only really excite political tragics like myself. But what has struck everyone and what continues to cause comment is the name change to Tibrogargan. “Fair to say most are bemused why a seat that is 90% unchanged warrants a name change. Others suggest it’s rather discriminatory towards the other ten Glass House Mountains – the electorate is better reflected in the collective name. “And still others rightly point out the cost of changing the name. so I suspect more than one or two submissions will go in to the Electoral Commission on that topic.” submissions were due March 27. ET sET FOR A night of intense energy, beautiful harmonies and driving dance rhythms next month, when well-known Celtic band Barleyshakes launches the ‘Live Music Locally’ program at the Mapleton Hall. Barleyshakes’ performance will be the inaugural event in this year’s music program at the Mapleton Hall. ‘Live Music Locally’ is an initiative of the MH Folk, a group of volunteers who are working under the auspices of the Mapleton Hall Trust. The group is developing an ongoing program of live music performances at the iconic hall, aimed at both bringing entertainment to locals, and supporting live artists. The hall has wonderful acoustics and is a great venue for live bands. Funds raised go toward its upkeep. Amongst forthcoming artists are Balkanics, Bek-Jean Stewart and View from Madeleine’s Couch. But first, Barleyshakes kicks off the year’s music program with Celtic style. After more than a decade

together, this ensemble know each other intensely and communicate freely to create something fresh every time they perform. Ever since their inception in the ‘90s in Dublin, the Barleyshakes have been turning heads as they inject new life into Irish music, while honouring tradition passed. “I started racing when I was 30 years old. I’ve raced motorbikes for 27 years. At first in England, the Isle of Man, a few times in Europe, then we went to Japan where I raced a 1200cc vintage bike. While in Japan I was invited to race in Daytona, UsA.” A veteran of the sport, Reg has won many races and two championships but was never injured while racing. However, he defines the fateful morning of October 28, 2016 as one ride too many. Brenda recalled: “We got up early, went outside and sat on the swing seat over in the forest. We listened to birdsong and watched the sunrise while eating breakfast. “I told Reg that I was going back to bed and he said he was going for a ride. REVIOUsLy FROM THE UK, the Reg and Brenda decided to move to Australia after exploring the sunshine Coast Hinterland on bikes provided by their hosts. Reg’s love of motorbikes began as a youngster. “I’ve had motorcycles all my life. I’ve been riding bikes since I shouldn’t have been riding bikes,” said the 72-year old with a grin.

beyond. One he had traversed many times. A truck followed by two cars was just beyond the bend and out of sight. They were almost stationary. Reg’s bike cruised around the curve. He was faced with the bank of traffic. There was no time to brake. To avoid hitting the rear vehicle, he swerved to the left and went down the inside kicking off the footrest so that the bike went first. I spoke with Lauren Kurth as she and her sister Justine Baker, a nurse at Maleny Hospital were first on the scene. Lauren shares her experience. “The bike flipped from just past our driveway and tumbled over in mid-air. The rider came off the bike a metre beyond our driveway, hit the culvert on the neighbour’s driveway and landed face down. “We removed the helmet because the guy said he couldn’t breathe. He murmured the name Reg. “An off-duty fireman was next on the scene. It was he who instructed us to shift Reg as he was moving his legs and trying to climb out of the culvert.” Within fifteen minutes the ambulance, police and fire trucks arrived. Reg’s leather suit was cut from his body in order to assess the injuries. Reg’s angels that day stayed with him until the RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter airlifted him to Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital. By this time, Brenda was beginning to worry as Reg hadn’t returned and it was past nine o’clock. Then there was a knock on the door. “A policeman came to let me know about the crash and said that Reg had been airlifted to Brisbane. I was stunned. He asked if I had someone who could stay with me. Our neighbours were not at home but their daughter cancelled going to work and came with me to Brisbane.” Reg’s injuries were life threatening. A ruptured spleen, brain haemorrhage and smashed ribs. That was just for starters. His spine was damaged in three places and the lower right arm was broken. Reg was put into an induced coma where he remained for two weeks. Fortunately, Reg’s legs survived the crash. Once it was established that he would not be paralysed, having the use

of his legs went a long way towards rehabilitation. “The physiotherapist had me walking with a frame and saw that I wasn’t putting much weight on my hands. He just slid the frame away and I kept walking. “I burst into tears and thought wow, I’m going to walk again. I’m going to live again. I’m going to be whole again.” Reg spent six weeks in Princess Alexandra Hospital, about ten days at Caloundra for rehabilitation and the remainder in Maleny Hospital before he was allowed home for Christmas. “While Reg was home he continued with his rehab exercises. When he went back he was walking without a stick. The staff were so impressed he was discharged,” said Brenda. Reg applauds those who cared for him: roadside assistance, the RACQ LifeFlight team, all hospital workers from wardsmen through to the surgeons. “The biggest gems that I’ve come across are Australian medical workers. They are just fantastic,” said Reg beaming at his perceived good fortune. Brenda speaks about the support she received: “My sister Valerie cancelled a holiday and flew out from England. People kept phoning to see how Reg was and would come and have a cup of tea with me. so many people took me down to Brisbane. It just warms my heart.” Working out in his home gym twice a day is paramount for Reg Bolton. Brenda includes that he does laps of the outside of the house and up the high steps up to eight times, a couple of times every day. Reg admits that it’s going to be a challenge not to get on a motorbike again but cites his first love as Brenda whom he met when she was 13 and he 15. He gives thanks that Brenda chose not to ride in the lead on October 28. Radiating positivity, Reg looks forward to their next adventure, albeit not on a motorcycle.

He adds, “We’ve been together over 50 years. It’s wonderful. Not a moment too long. The secret is to marry your best friend.”

y ANy MEAsURE, Col Finley’s story is one of success. The Maleny singer/songwriter is highly regarded in the music industry, having recorded five albums over a 25-year career and performed at prestigious events across Australia and the Us. But it came at a high price. “I was a police-dog handler with the RAAF—young, fit and healthy—but my heart was with my music. After six years, my sergeant said I was a much better singer/songwriter than dog handler, and he encouraged me to leave the RAAF and make music my career.” Aged 24, Col hit the road, touring Australia and proving his sergeant right. As a young front man to a band of seasoned musicians, he lived the stereotypical life of a muso on the road. Col admits he abused his body and his mind. “I felt a bit jittery before each performance, so having a drink calmed the nerves. After the gigs, we’d light up a joint to relax.

I didn’t realise that the drugs and grog were masking a condition and had become a major part of my life. “Drugs, sex and rock’n’roll; you know the story. I had a son during that time, Clay, but left when he was four as I was not the sort of bloke a kid should have around. “We remained estranged, meeting only briefly, until three years ago. He’s now a terrific 20-year-old, and I’m very proud of him. The father has become the mate.” Col hit rock bottom before he began to climb out again. He owes his life, quite literally, to his best friend and wife, Nellie (Janelle Braden), herself a singer/songwriter. “We met when I wrote a song for her album she was recording in 2002, and our friendship grew. Nellie’s family were dairy farmers along the Mary Valley and I lived in Tamworth. I’d often ring her in the middle of the night to talk my way out of a dark place. Eventually, she moved to Tamworth to be with me.” But Col was still on the drug treadmill, overusing the dangerous synthetic form of marijuana. Nellie came home unexpectedly one day to find Col unconscious on the floor. His body had shut down. He was rushed to Tamworth Base Hospital.

“I came to with Nellie sitting by my bed, holding my hand, crying. I woke out of my fug and realised that this beautiful woman, carrying our first child, was more important than all the drugs and grog. I was released from hospital and have never touched drugs since.” They married in Tamworth in 2009, and when sons Levi and Diezel were just toddlers, bought a 31-foot caravan and toured as a family band for three years. “Watch out Australia, here we come! “It was all about showing the kids that Australia has more to offer than what they found in books and TV. Nellie and I performed as a duo, but the kids were always on stage, trying to sing over us. We learnt to turn their mics down. The crowd loved us and we loved the life.” Three years ago, the family settled in Maleny so Nellie could be near her family. Col met fellow muso Paul ‘Richo’ Richardson. “We were sitting on the verandah having a coffee when the conversation got around to depression and anxiety. It turns out we both had similar backgrounds. “Part of my recovery had been to make contact with the Beyond Blue organisation, so Richo and I decided to record an album as a fundraiser.” Col wrote Above the Blue, a song that soared in the charts and became the title of the album. “With a mix of country, blues and roots, it is designed to lift listeners ‘Above the Blue’,” explained Col. This idea turned into a h u g e l y successful venture. They launched the album at an event sponsored by Maleny Apex Col's family: Nellie, Col, Clay, Levi and Diezel

and local businesses in Maleny in November 2015. The project raised over $15,000! “Apart from a small amount that included legal fees, it all went to Beyond Blue,” Col said proudly. All of the money had come from Maleny. This got Col, Richo and the ATB Team thinking: imagine if all that money was returned to the same community. What they could do with it! The result is the new-direction Above the Blue 2, an ongoing project to raise funds for local needs in mental health. Col and Richo’s dream is becoming a reality. “This is just the start,” said Col. “This community has helped us so much, our aim is to give something back—to help those who, like us, need a little direction and help.” Meanwhile, Col will be in the studio, recording 25 of his songs for a new album The Collective, to celebrate his 25 years as an independent recording artist and readying for Country Rocks the Mountains at Maleny show, June 2 and 3. E ARE LUCKy to have a local organisation who continually strive for the retention of natural land for our native ecosystem, within two properties containing remnant vegetation in Witta and Reesville. That organisation is the Wildlife Land Fund Limited (WLFL). Chairman of WLFL , Matt Cecil, explains, “Our idea is to keep conservation local. Wildlife Land Fund Ltd is encouraging members of the community to join and become ‘Friends of Reesville and Witta’. Become the local ‘eyes and ears’ for these environmentally valuable blocks of land.” Members of this non-profit organisation are encouraged to participate in weed control and regeneration, Working Bees, and also help with administration - but none of this is compulsory, donations are also extremely valuable. The WLFL is having a positive impact. “We planted 100 birdwing butterfly vines for the Richmond birdwing butterfly,” shares Matt. “During a working bee this March members were very excited to find four Richmond birdwing larvae on the young vines! The concept of the Wildlife Land Fund, as a body devoted to conservation of the natural environment, was developed and fostered by the Wildlife Preservation society of Queensland, one of the longest established and most respected conservation organisations in Queensland. “Our organisation exists because Queensland's natural heritage and biodiversity are under threat,” Matt says, “And we are run entirely by volunteers, including our voluntary Board of Directors.” The WLFL also issues contracts of work to local land management organisations including Brush Turkey Enterprises and Barung Landcare, with the support of the sunshine Coast Council. Matt also recalls support from other groups. “The Green Army initiative completed a fantastic project on the Witta Conservation Reserve in 2016. They rebuilt a path to the creek, became involved in strategic planting to fill gaps in the canopy, and planted green mat-rush to reduce soil erosion in certain areas. “They also managed to greatly reduce the invasive

lantana and were really encouraged by the abundance of life appearing in the areas they had worked so hard to improve.” It is worth noting that The Wildlife Land Fund Ltd’s property acquisitions and management are only made possible by bequests of specific land, government and philanthropic grants, donations of land and funds by individuals, groups and corporations and cash bequests. It conducts its operations through a strong network of members, volunteers and experts throughout Queensland. “Our vision is to contribute to an ecologically sustainable future for people and wildlife by conserving Queensland's natural environment. The government alone can’t do this, so we have to act,” Matt believes. The Wildlife Land Fund Ltd complements the work of other organisations by focussing on a network of smaller land parcels, generally of less than 2000 hectares. “It is important to recognise to recognise the people who have generously donated land to help our cause,” continues Matt. “WLFL currently owns or is the principal trustee of three properties in Queensland. These are the Neil Holloway Reesville Nature Refuge, Witta Conservation Reserve Nature Refuge and the Bukkulla Conservation Park in Marlborough, central Queensland. “Witta Nature Refuge is a 7.3 ha freehold block located near Maley, in s.E. Qld. This land was donated by Mr Legh Davis.

“Neil Holloway Reesville Nature Refuge is a 15 hectare freehold block located near Maleny. It was donated by Mr. Neil Holloway. ExPECTED THAT THE new centre at Mary Cairncross scenic Reserve was going to be impressive. After a $4.7 million spend - one would hope so. And it was better than I had imagined. I was most grateful for that beautiful view of the heritage-listed Glass House Mountains - that I did not need to cross the road for. Volunteer Karen Hunter suggested I first venture up the magnificent new elevated boardwalk, which leads you through the trees and the Discovery Centre to the viewing platform. I breathed in the expanse with two couples - one Queenslanders, and the others European. "We see a lot of international people - half the British Isles have passed through, Buddhist monks, from toddlers to aged care groups - the facilities include wheelchair access up to the viewing deck," said Karen. "They love it. There was a German fellow today - he thought it was the best rainforest and best display. He was quite excited. "you don't get a view and a rainforest together - it is rare to get both.” Karen moved to Maleny two years ago, "I'm a bird watching person, that's my attraction to the reserve - there's a lot of different species of birds here. "This is the heart of Maleny for the public - the Glass House Mountains - and accessible for locals. you can come walking at six in the morning." Karen says volunteers receive lots of education days, "We're learning and can pass that on to the public. "They come from elsewhere, they don't know a lot of local law and history or understand the environment." The Thynne sisters – Elizabeth, Mabel and Mary – with the aid of their brother Ted, gifted the reserve land to Council in 1941 in honour of their mother, Mary Cairncross.

Karen believes they showed a lot of foresight and awareness of how important environmental tourism would be. she paid tribute to the previous management committees, including Rotary, as well as the involvement of Barung and other groups, saying that the reserve draws it all together. "The volunteer guides for school groups are trained in botany, and tailor tours around the curriculum for that class. "There's a new seating area for the kids if it's raining, we had 80 schools last year." Karen says now the centre is located next to the café and viewing platform - it entices people in, and for those on a schedule or with a disability, it gives people a taste of the rainforest. The Dusk to Dawn exhibition is an excellent example of how the modern displays can attract a younger audience, and the Friends of Mary Cairncross contributed to the AV component.

"I think it is spectacular - the stonework, the timber - the natural materials are beautiful. It makes a much better experience for children and adults. It has really enhanced the ways to experience the rainforest." Council's Environmental Officer, Dean West agrees. It is his sixth year at the Reserve and it is his aim for people to discover, enjoy and respect it. "Once people just came to the café - now they can come and learn about the environment without having to take the whole walk.” sensitively designed to fit in with the look and feel of the reserve, he said, "Most people absolutely love it -

architecturally it is quite striking. "you'll find a lot more to do in this centre - it offers more discovery material." He demonstrated the clever use of technology - with ipads highlighting secret images in the walls, and the ease of accessing information through multi-sensory experiences. Things open and shut, there are microscopes, creepy crawlies and headphones to listen in. "It engages with the next generation - which encourages their parents." He believes that it is helping people know why we shouldn't walk off the tracks, stomp to take a photo, or let our kids swing on branches. "If we can learn to understand and respect what is in there, the longer it will exist. It is not a huge piece of land - we need to make it last.”

WHICH BUSINESS STRUCTURE IS RIGHT FOR YOU? An important consideration to contemplate when starting a new business is the type of business structure that best suits your needs. Issues that you should consider when choosing the suitable structure range from on issues of liability and how best to protect yourself and your business from liability to financial and practical concerns. 1. SOLE TRADER Assets and liabilities of the business belongs to the owner of the business – you. As there is no fire wall between your personal and business assets you would be personally liable in all aspects of your business. Some of the advantages are that this is a simple structure to set up and maintain; your retain effective control and as you are not an employee of your business you don’t have to make compulsory superannuation contributions, pay payroll tax or workers’ compensation for yourself. The greatest disadvantage is the unlimited liability which means that your personal assets are at risk should you be sued. 2. PARTNERSHIPS A partnership is not a separate legal entity but rather an association of individuals or entitles which come together for the purpose of carrying on a business activity with a view to making a profit. The assets of the partnership belong to the individual partners jointly rather than to a separate legal entity. The greatest advantage is probably that it is relatively easy and cheap to set up. But again the main disadvantage is the issue of the joint and several liability of partners. In practical terms this means that should one partner be unable to pay his or her share of a partnership debt then the remaining partner is fully liable for the whole of that debt despite any agreement to the contrary between the partners. 3. COMPANY A company is a separate legal entity and capable of owning assets it its own name. The main advantages are that this structure has limited liability for its shareholders, it is a structure which is commercially well understood and accepted and there are many choices as to the distribution of profits and losses to the shareholders. The greatest disadvantage is that it is expensive to set up and to maintain as it requires greater accounting and accountability obligations than say a sole trader. Control of the company lies with its directors so this may or may not be a disadvantage. IN CONCLUSION As a guideline, the characteristics of a good business structure are flexibility so that the structure can cope with changing circumstances with minimum consequences to the business; minimisation of exposure to liability; minimisation of costs such as tax and the efficient distribution of profits and losses.

RT ANTIQUES ANTLERS greets you with curios, tantalising objects from the past, unique jewellery, Victoriana, and even a huge Texas Longhorn head mount on the wall. Keep walking through and you will see intriguing and beautiful works of art, some by extremely established names, such as Norman Lindsay. These are nestled amongst antique furniture, from a 1920s dark wood umbrella stand to an elegant chaise longue or two.

“I’m a collector, and I like to source ‘hard to find’ pieces,” owner Ellen Cummings tells me. “We really do have one-off pieces, and I try to find things with a touch of elegance or glamour.” Despite a lifelong passion for antiques, it has taken Ellen over 40 years to reach this point. “I’ve been a teacher for 35 years, and I still am!” she says with a smile. “I’ve taught in Nambour for 20 years, everything from home economics to art to special education, and I’ve been a guidance officer. “I was planning to be a dress designer when I was young, but ended up doing home economics at QUT because back then textiles was involved, so it had a fashion connection. Teaching wasn’t really planned, but I like working with kids... although when I taught my sons at st John’s it was tricky because they were very cheeky!” she admits to trying to realise her dream in the past. “I have had a fashion and antique business previously, but I

was a single mum with three kids, and I was studying, so I had to put business on hold.” Finally, 12 months ago, the Mapleton shop became Ellen’s, and she was overjoyed that the family business could begin. “I used to come up to Mapleton for school camps and see this shop. I even worked with Marian Bull for a while who had the first antique shop here.” Ellen was living in Cooroy, “I found a house in Montville that would fit all my furniture, so that was that.” An artist herself, Ellen works with acrylics, creates collages of family portraits, and paints comical portraits. “I’m an abstract artist, not traditional. I also change my style all the time,” she admits. “Most of my work is by order by people who know me, and it takes me a couple of years as I don’t have the time, but they are happy to wait.” some of Ellen’s hand-painted furniture is in the shop, but more of her work is at her Montville showroom. My eyes are drawn to some striking dot paintings in a far corner, one in particular I would love to buy myself. “That’s by Carole Hartwig, called Dot Painting of our Time, and it came from the Aarwun Gallery in Canberra,” Ellen tells me with a hint of pride. I enjoy the fact that there are hidden surprises in this space, and it has the comforting smell of a room full of history. A more quirky vision is candelabras made from deer antlers. “Did you know that over time old antlers fall off and new ones begin to grow?” Ellen asks me. somehow these fallen antlers have found a new purpose through Ellen’s shop, bringing candlelight and atmosphere to dinner parties and events.

“I have started working in events now, hiring out some of our pieces for wedding proposals, engagements and weddings. It’s something very different, and clients love that.” Ellen said choosing the first part of the name - art and antiques was easy. “I thought antlers seemed very male, and I wanted to add that element, invite the ‘urban cowboys’ in!” she laughs. “I wanted a masculine and feminine theme to connect to the man cave and female parlour.” she also gives back to the community, donating pieces for fundraising activities to the Lions, Bowls Club, and Blackall Range Care Group. Her family complain she is neglecting them, but they help in their own way. “My mother used to work here, and whenever she gives me things for the shop, they sell instantly!” Ellen laughs. “My twin sons also help. Brent did the renovations in the shop, and Kirk is my accountant. “Both are studying overseas at the moment, one in Colombia, one in Chile, and I am stuck with Brent’s cockatoo, Gary. He’s about 10 years old, so he’ll be around for another 90 years!” Ellen’s daughter, April, is an architect and her mum’s business advisor. “she is supposed to be designing my emblem. I know what I want, but she’s 26 years old, busy, and Mum’s last on the list. “Maybe I’ll get her to do it for me for Mother’s day, before I’m an antique…” Art Antiques Antlers is open every day between 10am and 2pm. shops 3&4, corner of Post Office and Obi Obi roads, Mapleton. he Terrace Seafood reSTauranT and Terrace Cottages of Maleny have come together to create a perfect place to eat and unwind, thanks to owners Pauline and craig Mitchell. "We always thought it was a great idea to have accommodation next door to our restaurant," says craig. "Guests can just stroll down for a meal and enjoy, without the worry of driving." In 2003 Pauline and craig Mitchell bought a property next door to their established business, The Terrace Seafood Restaurant. This property was originally owned by aub and Joyce Bergann and was connected to the motel next door, called The Logger’s Rest. Joyce and aub owned and operated this motel for a number of years and then expanded, built the cottages and called it Affaire d'Amour. When Pauline and craig bought Affair d'Amour it had six cottage-style rooms with lovely views, a swimming pool and a shed. Since then, they have built a conference room,

a penthouse villa, a studio villa and a wedding gazebo. They also bought the house next door as a manager’s residence. for a number of years the property was leased, but now Pauline and craig are back at the helm, along with their friends, experienced accommodation operators, neale and alison fischer. By serendipitous coincidence, neale and alison used to operate the late Joyce and aub’s motel about 10 years ago! The boutique accommodation has beautiful gardens boasting over 12 varieties of camellias, thanks to the late Joyce Bergann, and coastal and hinterland views. T BeGan In a small way in 1977. elizabeth Mcdonald and a few others were interested in handcrafts and painting, so over a cup of tea at elizabeth’s house they decided to start a group to encourage others with similar interests. The first formal meeting was held on april 28, 1977 where a constitution was drafted so that they officially became the arts and crafts Group. elizabeth was the first president and fees were set at $2 per year. By the end of 1977 there were 36 members – spinners, artists, weavers and potters – too many to continue meeting at Barfold Studio (elizabeth’s home), so new accommodation had to be found elsewhere. a move was made to the Showgrounds underneath the Pavilion where the floor was unsealed and there was one power point! Groups were offered in painting, spinning, weaving, leatherwork and wood carving. Maleny must have taken the new arts and crafts Group to it’s heart – by the end of 1978 there were 119 members! The first fair (called an exhibition) was held at the beginning of november 1978 in the rSl hall. The workshop moved on in 1979 to the caboolture dairy co-op Building (the old Butter factory) in coral Street. MacG occupied these premises for the next four years. have their own workshop premises. They also moved to their current gallery address at 36 Maple Street, using the rear of the premises as a workshop with embroidery, spinning and weaving groups hiring the cWa rooms for three friday mornings per month. In May 1985 the group began to pay rent for the use of the gallery – having been allowed by the Katsaris family to use it rent free for five years. Their generosity helped MacG to raise the finance it needed to build the workshop and develop a permanent home. The group needed to raise $30,000 to gain a dollar-fordollar subsidy from the government. land was secured at the Showgrounds with a 20-year lease. Building commenced in october 1985 and completed in december of that year. The workshop has been extended twice since then. and this year the 280 members with 13 groups in MacG are celebrating its 40th birthday.

Commemorate 100 years of the ANZAC

Who is Martin? Harry Hapgood was a prolific correspondent to his family in Maleny during World War I. His niece, Gwen Davis showed me his postcards and photo in Landsborough Museum's exhibition "Far from this land". Gwen discovered another letter and one century later it still gives us insight not only into life as a soldier, but also what it was like for the women watching the conflict from afar. She hoped HT readers could help her find out who wrote it. by Michelle Gilmore

On the desert 18-1-17 Dear Dora, Only a few lines to let you know that I am still amongst the living, and there is no daisies growing out of my toes yet thank Goodness. I received your small note in Ann's letter a few days ago. And was very pleased to hear from you & to know that you are all real well. Sorry to hear of Harries illness, but it is much better for him to take sick if he is not so strong before he gets over to this part of the country. As this climate will test the strongest. But I sincerely trust Harry is quiet well again ere this letter reaches you. Well Dora, you ask me if I get milk on my porridge. It is my own fault that I don't as there is a few old goats kicking around the desert, but I find I have not enough pace to catch them. So I have to go without. But I tell you what I did have for tea this evening. A big feed of treacle. One of my section mates was over to a canteen

today And he bought a couple of tins of (Cocky's Joy). And by the time I had finished tea I was treacly from the eyes to the chin. I did have a blow out, the flies will be after me for a week. It was a great change from marmalade. I often wish I could slip in through the back door and get some of those cakes you used to make. A basin of junket would do. Never mind Dora, I hope it won't be very long before my wish comes true. But before I go any farther, one agreement I want you to sign before I go back is, that I have full use of the green chair in the music room. So I think you will agree. If not there will be trouble. So consider the matter over and let me know at an early opportunity. Remember me kindly to your Dad, Mum and rest of the family. And tell Dave I will write to him very shortly. And Dora

be sure and send me Harry's address and number when he sails so as I can write to him. You don't know how one appreciates a letter when he has left home & friends to join the fray. It's a big contract to sign on for but if one comes through it all, he will be satisfied he has done his duty. I say Dora, how does the last goodnight go now? hoPe MarTIn did return from the war to commandeer that green chair. It would have been unthinkable - dora hapgood and her brother harry's friends did not survive the war, there was a generation of families forever fractured by the conflict. "dora's boyfriend harold White was killed in france," explained her niece Gwen davis. This letter was written to dora when she was 18, "dora was a great cook and played the piano. ann and Iley were dora's sisters, her brother was dave and Ted was her father," said Gwen. "My dad was harry's brother - the youngest boy Ben, born 1903 and he attended school in Maleny." Before dora's brother harry enlisted, he worked cutting timber, building fences and doing general farm work. It was only a couple of months after this letter, exactly one hundred years ago from today, he found himself in egypt with the 11th light horse Training regiment. he spent his entire war in the Middle east, and sent photos and mementos to his family. The hapgoods moved to Maleny from new South Wales in 1910, "My grandparents ran Thynne's farm for several years." harry's eldest sister, floss (Mrs Bert hawkins) was first born of the ten children, and moved to Maleny a few years later. It seemed like Martin knew the family well, Gwen smiled, "It's funny about the beer - harry's mother never had alcohol in the house!"

harry did return from the war and settled in Sydney. Gwen remembers his visits to Grandma. The hapgoods moved in the 20’s where the BP is at the Mooloolah connection road. dora never married. "When dora died - there was a whole suitcase of photos and letters - my other auntie gave it to me." It contained many items for the "far from this land" exhibition, including the mysterious letter. With a with a new exhibition opening in august at the landsborough Museum, this is the last anZac day to see harry hapgood's exhibit and hear tales of other locals some who did not return.

Commemorate 100 years of the ANZAC

A re-enactment of MALENY’S GREAT DAY Maleny RSL wishes to re-enact the 1918 Victory March through Maleny, November 2018. In 1918, "practically every person in the district was present", and the crowd numbered "many hundreds" to rejoice in the end of World War I and anticipated re-union with their loved ones. Chris Brooker from Maleny RSL is keen to ascertain interest in the reenactment by calling a community meeting - already receiving interest from TS Centaur cadets and Mens’ Shed. Excerpts from Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser, Friday 6th December, 1918. Page 4:

To celebrate the victory, a battleship "Sydney" was also used for "speechifying" at the close of the procession, and after this a picnic where "a mountain of cakes had vanished"

he ProceSSIon WaS over ½ mile in length, and started from the doctor’s residence, passed through the township to Mr. dunlop’s paddock. The efforts of the promoters were crowned with success, while the preparations of the participants were highly praiseworthy. heading the procession, as a symbol of the law and order that characterises the British dominions was our popular “John”, constable Mclaughlin, mounted on a fine steed. he was followed by a dozen returned men, heroes who had amply done their bit for the empire, and carrying the landsborough Shire councils War loan honour flag. There were succeeded by “John Bull” cleverly represented by Master Ted hankinson, whose getup on the big draught horse was quite imposing. our ever enthusiastic red cross workers next marched blithely along in suitable attire, gaily singing patriotic songs, the two leaders struggling with a huge red cross banner quite out of proportion to their own size, but considering the day, no task to them was impossible. Jack Tar was next represented by a number of boys, attired in sailor costume aboard the “Sydney”. This proved undoubtedly the greatest achievement of the day. Mr alfred cooke’s Studebaker car was converted into an ideal sham battle ship. The disguise was so perfect and so

realistic. The “vessel” was 30 feet in length and masts, funnels, guns, life belts, port holes, anchors and all other warship necessaries were there in miniature; not even was the steering wheel missing. for as Mr cooke himself, acting as engineer saw to the successful “propelling of the vessel”, his son, Warden, as captain stood on the bridge and safely piloted the vessel at a speed hardly measurable in knots per hour, but nevertheless safely in its honoured position in the procession. Miss Irene cooke represented “Britannia” on board the vessel and manifested to all that the Trident still remained in her grasp. a prettily decorated buggy emblematic of australia followed, the proprietors of this being Mesdames r. Bryce and a. Webster. Then a number

of “natives” and “swagmen” whose disguise was too perfect to discover the originals, representing “White australia”, dragging an effigy of ex-Kaiser Bill behind them. a miscellaneous band, comprising accordions, mouthorgans, cornets, clarinets &c., whose music though more noisy than harmonious was nevertheless very cheering, followed. Mrs. alf Skerman’s buggy load prettily decorated represented new Zealand, and Messrs Peters and cole’s buggy representing canada were subject to much favourable comment. The rifle club, as infantrymen, were not numerically strong, but compensated for this by in their originality in displaying a home-made cannon drawn by a tiny pony.

The bullock wagon and ladies represented England and her dominions

a bushmens contingent organised by Mr. r. Bryce com prising 30 horsemen followed, to be succeeded by what was second only to the “Sydney” display, the superbly decorated bullock wagon illustrating england and her dominions. The central figure in this, Great Britain, was Miss lucy Brooker, while Miss Mona cooke represented Miss australia, Miss florrie flick canada, Miss Maggie Brooker new Zealand, Miss eva foster India, Miss emily Brooker South africa and Bobby Mclean dressed in kilts represented Scotland. This vehicle bore the inscription “as we stood united”, and a white dove on top represented Peace.

Messrs Brooker’s, Warne’s, and Bradley’s decorated vehicles next represented red, white and blue. The musical wagon driven by Mr. W. humphries was a very attractive feature. With a piano and a jolly band of singers aboard, it considerably enlivened the proceedings with “rule Britannia, “la Marsellaise”, “Soldiers of the King” and other patriotic airs en route. Misses Bowen and Gorman’s representation of Italy in a motor-car was deserving of praise, while the originality of Mr. dinning’s “uncle Sam” display was a feature long to be remembered. Mr. Templeman’s buggy load of youngsters disguised as gypsies was also an item of interest, the idea originating with Mrs hogan. Sixty school children on horseback, each possessing a flag and led by Master len Porter carrying the big school union Jack, looked very nice, maintained fine order, and gained well merited applause as they passed through the main street. Mrs. rough’s tableau of “Peace” was quite emblematic, the family having paid considerable attention to detail in its preparations. India was represented by sons from her own soil in proper hindoo dress. The Maleny ambulance Brigade was represented by Mr. e. Tesch in the Maleny motor ambulance with a couple of ladies as red cross nurses. The tradesman’s vehicle was very appropriate to Maleny. driven by Mr r. rough, it conveyed Mr Jack Skerman’s Jersey cow, “hope”, illustrative of Maleny’s chief industry.

The procession moved off soon after 11 a.m. and as it passed along the dusty streets the various items were heartily cheered by the numerous spectators. upon arrival at the grounds, the whole procession was carefully drawn up in square formation, the “Sydney” being moored in the centre, it’s bridge being used as a platform for the speechifying. ICHARD BOGUSZ WAS BORN in Europe in 1947. He came to Australia as a five year old. On leaving school he joined the computer industry but decided to become full time professional artist whilst still in his early twenties. “I committed myself to a way of life from which there was no return. For the next fourteen years, I entered shows, won awards and exhibited widely. Then, in 1986, I felt I needed to escape the hectic southern art world. I headed north finally settling just out of Townsville. The carefree lifestyle and the vibrant colours of the tropics were just what I needed to inspire me. After fifteen years of this carefree life, I felt my ideas were beginning to dry up and it was time for a major change. In 2001, my family and I, moved to Brisbane,” Richard explained. “The move south really invigorated me. I experimented with different styles but kept returning to my narrative works but with a more sophisticated approach demanding a deeper and more questioning response from the viewer. Being a full-time artist for almost forty five years has been a curiously indulgent experience mixed with excitation and irritation. Gratefully, the angst for acceptance by the public is now a distant memory replaced by a determination to produce what I do naturally. This has always yielded the best outcome in both mental attitude and hence my paintings. It allows the equivocal, the uncertainty of nature, to be unconsciously incorporated in my paintings.” Open daily from 10 to 5, Montville Art Gallery is located at 138 Main Street, Montville, opposite the Village Green. The exhibition will be the first at her new pop-up gallery in Palmwoods and will feature on the opening night a performance by Lyndon Davis of the local Gubbi Gubbi tribe, playing Tina’s unique Glass Didgeridoo. The start of the Tribal Tribute series began on the auspicious night of the Maroochydore Art Exhibition in 1999. This is when Tina met the indigenous lady, Nuuna. Both women attained first prize in their relevant sections and had a mutual respect for each other’s work. “We shared our past experiences and talked of reconciliation. Our journey, as they say- ‘and so begins’,” shares Tina. Their first collaboration piece, called Women’s Business, was exhibited at the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Awards at Canberra in the year 2000. “Each piece dances with a creative reconciliation of energy or life force of its own.” Tina has now met some amazingly talented indigenous artists who are adorning and embellishing the Tribal Tribute Series. Peter Mulcahy and Cheryl Thompson hand painted additions to Tina’s glass work, which has to be seen to be believed. It has taken three years to bring this new body of work to fruition. After Tina created the glass vessels they then were taken to Jules the ironworker, to wave her magic with her metal skills. “The wood bases were then to be with considered, much searching for the right energy and look to complement the age spirit of the piece,” explains Tina. “The piece then needed to be adorned with wood, clay and glass beads and feathers. “Thanks to the talents of Gary Lisle The piece that started who created the this exhibition beautiful glass beads and Wolfgang Engel for blown miniature vessels and wood bases, together with David Suters.” Tina believes the vessels “honour the past tribes as our teachers, the present as our creations and the future as our inspiration. “We now stand at the crossroads,” she continues, “and together we can heal the broken, unspoken laws of nature. The idea is to oﬀer a hands-on, experiential ‘village’, inspiring young people to work with their hands to enhance their appreciation of the natural world. The workshops and activities will oﬀer opportunities for participants to develop practical, creative skills and learn about working with natural materials. Kids of all ages can learn from experienced woodcrafters and use real tools to make a Mother’s Day present, a Funky Gourd Bird and much more! They can try their hand at furniture making at the Cool Stool School, make toys or create bush critters. There’ll be face painting, jewellery making, weed weaving and a lot of hands-on, away-from-screens, creative fun.

Gardners Falls issues investigated

ArKING, rOAD infrastructure, emergency access and signage at Gardners Falls will be assessed as part of an investigation into public safety issues at the popular tourist attraction in Maleny. Council will also explore the option of closing the car park area at night to prevent camping or antisocial behaviour, and to investigate creating a longterm management plan to improve public safety in the area. “Gardners Falls is a beautiful spot and we appreciate that it is fast becoming one of the hinterland’s biggest draw-cards for visitors,” Division Five councillor Jenny McKay said. “This increase in popularity means it has also experienced some ‘growing pains’ over the last few years and, unfortunately, we have had reports of people engaging in anti-social behaviour and posing a threat to the area’s native wildlife. “We need to work with our State Government colleagues to ensure that everyone can continue to visit this wonderful part of the Sunshine Coast, while protecting the very place so many of us enjoy.” A report will be submitted to Council for consideration at the June Ordinary Meeting.

The Dragon and the Turtle are an Australian/hungarian duo who started their journey on the streets in Europe with a guitar and a flute. Mendelssohn's Elijah The Maleny Singers will perform an abridged version, showcasing the highlights of Mendelssohn’s oratorio Elijah. Forest Art Collective Emelia Morrell Emelia is a 19-yearold local Maleny artist specialising in watercolour, pencil and oil paint. She is self-taught and has always had an interest in traditional mediums such as pen, pencil and paints. Emelia is particularly interested in portraits and faces. “I’ve grown up in a very creative family filled with other artists and I think this has played a part in my art. I can’t see myself ever not creating something,” Emelia says. A budding young artist, The Garden haus Gallery will be showing her work for the first time from April 24-30.

One Act Plays

Fred Smith brings Dust of Uruzgan to Maleny

Maleny Players continue their new One Act Plays April 7-9. Each short play has a different genre, with two of the plays written and directed by local community members. One is set in a Brisbane art gallery, where three cleaning ladies find out their jobs are threatened and come up with a scheme to make a lot of money. Then there's a pub and a chance meeting between two men on Valentine's Day. The audience also see a small town drama, with a young man who cannot or will not speak. Woodart matters Blackall range Visual Artists are holding their Easter Exhibition with a feature wall of paintings of our local Woodies at work on their creative wood articles, like this one entitled Wood Turning Tools. hEN IT COMES to seed dispersal you may invariably think of those gaudy members of the plant kingdom who use birds to spread their seed by hiding them in a fruit. It could be said that these plants were the first beings to master the art of advertising. That is to say - the art of making you believe, that you just have to have their fruit, no matter how low the food value, because it’s such a lovely colour! Sure some fruit are relatively nutritious and the lucky bird that’s eaten them can roost on a warm sunny branch and relax while the digestive processes take place. however, most fruit are designed to pass straight through digestive systems as quickly as possible leaving birds feeling hungry and having to eat even more fruit – how devious! Before you go thinking how superior you are and how dumb birds are for getting themselves trapped in a vicious circle like that, may I remind you that at least the birds only get sucked in by the advertisers when it comes to food… Then there are those free spirits of the botanical kingdom who use wind power! Ferns and mosses were amongst the earliest of plants and produce spores that are wholly spread by wind. Tree fern spore is particularly good at getting about. Now I don’t want

you to panic but you’re probably inhaling some at the moment, its everywhere! Fern spore will germinate on any moist, shady and bare patch of soil which is great for all you revegetators out there because ferns will turn up in your patch of developing forest all by themselves when the conditions become right. Besides the ferns many trees have evolved to spread their seed in the wind. Some familiar examples are the ancient conifers (excluding the Bunya of course) whose flat seeds are blown about in the summer storms and also the fine seed of eucalypts that are released to float on the breeze after a bush fire. The great limitation of wind dispersal is of course the wind itself. After all what happens if a few weeks of calm weather sets in when you’ve got a big crop of fruit on! Also unless your seed is particularly small then you’re going to be lucky if your seed goes any more than a 100 metres. This poses a big problem for the spread and maybe survival of some of the wind dispersed species in the fragmented forests of Southeast Queensland. When it comes to tree planting we should make sure these species are on our planting lists particularly if no parent trees of the same species appear close by.

The first edition was published in 1997, the second in 2005, and our knowledge and understanding of our environment have advanced considerably since then. Additional opportunities may await us, problem weeds will inevitably confront us, and there’s always more to find out about our flora and fauna. readers will enjoy learning something of the early history of the Blackall range, its climate, soils and landforms and the way water moves through the various catchments. Our homes and properties are on the headwaters of several river systems, the Mary, Stanley, Mooloolah

and Maroochy rivers. Obi Obi Creek drains into Lake Baroon and continues beyond this water impoundment to join the Mary near Kenilworth. We all live in a catchment. Fire can be a threat in dry times so it is useful to know something about vegetation types, how to reduce risk and where to source additional information.

There are useful gardening tips, including designing to attract wildlife, a focus for many of our local gardeners. Some of us are fortunate to have patches of remnant vegetation on our properties. Who can help us identify what is there? how can we best enhance or extend those patches? What are the right trees to plant on our soils and much, much more. This full-colour publication shares the collective knowledge of locals and is an invaluable guide to working with the land in our part of the world. MALENY WEATHER STATION Christine: Sadly we lost an amazing and dedicated man last September. his website seems to have died with him. These records are also important for historical information for this region. It is also sad that some of our record-breaking temperatures this summer have not been recorded. I understand a couple of private (stations) have sprung up.

HT: We agree, the information does need to be available for future planners and historians, and shared with the media and tourist organisations. Unfortunately it is not under Council jurisdiction - perhaps the private organisations would like to get in touch with HT?

RAINWATER WASTAGE IN MALENY Christine: Each time when visiting Maleny and it is raining, it upsets me to see precious rainwater pouring out of downpipes into the gutters, and often straight onto the footpaths in front of the shops and cafes. On a safety level this is dangerous. On an environment level I am in shock that for a town that prides itself on environmental issues this is still happening. Montville, Mapleton and surrounds do not access water from the Baroon Dam. All buildings and homes not only have their own rainwater tanks, but also their own sewage systems. These regions are not linked to town water, Utility Water or the council sewage systems. The residents are proud to be contributing to save our precious water. In planning the town, it was a shame Maleny was treated differently by being linked up to town water. But we can surely stop the rot by changing building codes for future development, re-visit large buildings who have the space for rainwater tanks, and offer incentives to residents to install rainwater tanks in existing properties. Councillor Jenny McKay: “Laws that required the installation of rainwater tanks (or other water supply

systems) with new houses and commercial buildings where the property was located in a reticulated town water area were repealed on 1 February 2013. Housing providers and property owners can now choose to voluntarily install a rainwater tank. Rainwater tanks can only be required to be installed with new houses and/or commercial buildings where a local government has been approved by the Minister to opt-in to the QDC. An independent cost-benefit analysis of rainwater tank and water savings laws (Queensland Development Code mandatory parts 4.2 and 4.3) carried out by the Queensland Competition Authority (QCA) concluded that the costs associated with mandating rainwater tanks for new houses will generally outweigh the overall benefit to the community. The QCA analysis recognised the net benefit of compulsory rainwater tanks for new houses will vary depending on the location and the current and future water demand and augmentation needs of these houses. Therefore, the QCA recommended that local governments be able to seek approval to ‘opt in’ to the laws where they can demonstrate that opting in will result in a net benefit to the community."

Bunya Tree removal at Mapleton School

T IS WITh DEEP rEGrET that Mapleton State School has been advised by the Queensland Education Department to remove the Bunya tree on school land, near the Obi Obi road. The tree has been deemed ‘high risk’, as the large Bunya nut cones have the capacity to be lethal when they fall. The school has suggested different ideas to save the tree, but the cones don’t always fall within the fenced area, and it is too costly to remove the nuts on a regular basis. We understand the Bunya tree is important to many locals, in particular the Aboriginal community, and are looking for ways to use and donate the timber appropriately. Principal Julianne Emmert

ThOUGhT I’D BrING the focus back to a common defect in trees that can often lead to failure. The technical name is bifurcation, or in normal language, twin-trunks. It occurs when trees that normally have a single dominant trunk, or leader, like pine trees, develop a second trunk growing next to the first. The junction where the two trunks meet can be a structural weakness and a potential failure point if the two trunks join at an acute, v-shaped angle. This v-shaped forking, whether it is between two trunks, or between a trunk and a side, or lateral branch, is a weak point.

the trees - Council could not do anything as they were camphor laurels and people who own the land make that decision. They tell me they plan to replant it. Council is actively friends with Russell Family Park and they are doing an enormous amount of planting, and proactively progressing the Master Plan.

Conversely, if the junction is a rounded u-shape, it is strong. The flatter and more open the u-shape, the stronger the junction, and the less likely it is to fail. That is not to say that the limb or trunk won’t fail at another point further out during a strong wind event, but it won’t fail at a u-shaped junction. There are two reasons I’m telling you this. The first is so you can go out in your garden and start looking for defects. The second is so you can find these defects when the tree is young and remove the defect with secatuers, rather than having to use chainsaws, a woodchipper and a labour team.

Try badminton Nambour Badminton Club invites you to come along and learn a new sport – play badminton, Tuesday mornings from 9am. Taking the stress out of the student

S STUDENTS END their first term back at school do they get to their holidays feeling more inspired, mentally expanded and Wendy Rosenfeldt more intelligent or are they slumping into the holidays in a ball of stress and exhaustion? Do we really stop and think about the extent to which education is developing the mind and wellbeing of the student? Or is that as strange as expecting medicals students to finish their medical degrees in better health? Even with all the best intentions the education system is failing to develop the total brain of the student. Information overload from school work, home life and the increasing amount of time spent on electronic devices creates stress in the minds of the students. All the information available to students these days is of little use if their minds are agitated and distracted. Stress overload can lead to severe brain dysfunction and is the precursor to imbalances in the mind and body including anxiety, depression and behavioural problems such as attention deficithyperactive disorder and violence. Brain imaging of stressed individuals shows that there are functional holes, or areas of decreased activity characterised by decreased blood flow to certain areas of the brain and lower metabolic activity patterns. Just learning or absorbing information will only enliven specific areas of the brain, leaving sections of the brain where cell networks fail to develop. Another consequence of on-going stress is that the brain down shifts to use more primitive brain functioning. Under stress we go into fight and flight mode, the prefrontal cortex that gives rise to rational thinking and moral reasoning is bypassed and we react in a more impulsive way. This is fine if we are about to be jumped on by a wild

tiger but not so necessary if someone takes our parking spot or teases us at school. All threat of punishment vanishes when one is in this state. When the prefrontal cortex is shut down we don’t have the ability to think of the consequences of our actions. We can be sorry after the event has passed but then it is too late to take back the damaging words or impulsive action. We can’t change the behaviour of students without changing what is going on in their brains. Transcendental Meditation has successfully helped students all around the world and transformed whole schools. Not only do the students increase in academic performance but the rates of detentions, suspensions and school absences decrease and harmony prevails in the classroom. TM provides these benefits by enlivening the total brain. The experiences of relaxation and expansion of awareness reported during Transcendental Meditation correlate to the research showing increased blood flow to the brain and more EEG coherence. Transcendental Meditation has also been found to strengthen the connection with the prefrontal cortex, a connection that remains strong even when we come out of meditation. Expanding the conscious capacity of the mind and taping into latent areas of the brain allows students to learn more, understand the information and recall it at a later time. It improves their ability to think and reason and most importantly it allows them to enjoy their educational experience rather than just endure it.

E ARE BORN with so many amazing resources built into our being. And we are now living in a time when there is an unfolding awareness, and a deeper understanding of our inner resources for creating wellness, prosperity, and joyful living. Research seems to point to the fact that many of the fascinating things we can do to manifest effects that make our life better on so many levels, stem from the correct use of our wonderful minds. While there are many facets to our mind and brain power, it seems that imagination and all that stems from that, such as the stories we tell ourselves, the things we accept as true from the outside world, the way we rehearse possible future outcomes, the words we use and the visualizations we play in our inner vision all strongly influence our experiences. We are starting to see the power of Placebo to create the most extraordinary and powerful reactions in our physical bodies. i.e. If you believe something will make you sick it probably will. If you think it will make you well it probably will. We see how affirmations can weaken the physical, mental or

emotional body. Both when directed to ourselves or in the power that the things we say to one another, can have to affect others positively or negatively. We rehearse so many future outcomes and because we are naturally attuned to be aware of problems that might affect us, we often naturally play out scenes that never bear any fruit except to drain our nervous energy. How different might our experience of reality be if we consciously chose the thoughts we entertained, the words we thought and spoke and talked ourselves up and not down. What if we thought about why we believed the things we accepted as truth, and what if we began to look at the latest research in the fields of neuroscience, placebo, imagery in healing, what might we discover then with our new understanding, if we became still and made the journey into the sacred space of our own being. HIS TIME OF YEAR with winter sports underway, this is one of the most common questions parents ask us. Heel pain, caused by calcaneal apophysitis (also called Sever’s disease) is common in physically active children. The condition can be very painful but is only temporary and has no long-term effects. Children will describe pain at the back of the heel where the growth plate has not yet fully developed and calcified. It usually occurs in the period in early adolescence when children grow most rapidly. This growth spurt can begin any time, approximately between the ages of 9-12 in girls and 10-12 in boys. A large tendon, called the Achilles Tendon, joins the calf muscle at the back of the leg, to the heel. Sever’s disease is thought to occur because of a mismatch in growth of the heel bones to the calf muscle and Achilles Tendon. If the bones grow faster than the muscles, the Achilles Tendon that attaches the muscle to the heel gets tight. At the same time, until the cartilage of the calcaneum is ossified (turned into bone), it is a potential weak spot. The tight calf muscle and Achilles Tendon cause a traction injury on this weak spot, resulting in inflammation and pain. Such stresses result from sports or activities that require a lot of running, jumping and landing, especially on hard surfaces. Examples would include football, netball and track running.
