Child Care Subsidy What is OSHC

What is CCS (Child Care Subsidy)

OSHC stands for ‘Out of School Hours Care’ and offers families within the community an option for the care of their children during hours outside of school hours.

The Child Care Subsidy is assistance to help parents manage the cost of Child Crae fees. Initiated through Services Australia, the amount of support each family receives depends on each family’s circumstances. More information and application for CCS can be found at https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/ child-care-subsidy

What does this mean for parents? Be it work, appointments or general life responsibilities, Rainbow Beach P&C have created OSHC for parents, both within the school and wider community, to help manage life a little easier if needed. Along with care in the hours after school on a normal week, we also have care available to families during the school holidays. Called ‘Vacation Care’, this program has been developed to keep kids active and creative during the school holidays when parents are often working.

How to enrol at OSHC Enrolment is online via our software system Xplor. When families contact our OSHC we will grab your details and email through the link below which will start the process by gathering all your and your child/childrens details. Once approved you will receive a confirmation email with another link to download our Xplor Home App and you can start enrolling! Enrolment in OSHC can be daunting but OSHC staff and the P&C are always happy to help and aid in any way, just contact us at oshcrainbowbeach@gmail.com 0480 501 870 (open hours) or pop in and say hello! https://prodadmin.myxplor.com/enrollment_v2/centre/8SSt8f3UQ94231y2j94231B7Rkc05Q

It’s Turtle Time on the Cooloola Coast!

I

T’S TIME TO shell-ebrate one of nature’s most awe-inspiring spectacles: turtle nesting season! From Inskip Point to Double Island Point, and along the pristine 50km stretch of Teewah Beach, Green and Loggerhead turtles are returning to lay their eggs. It’s a magical time, but it’s also a season filled with challenges for our marine friends. These turtles face serious threats, including:

• Seagrass loss, a crucial food source for Green turtles. • Beach erosion, which can destroy nesting areas. • Increased 4WD traffic, disturbing their habitats. • Dune damage, which directly impacts their nesting sites.

Join the TurtleCare Mission Cooloola Coastcare is on a mission to protect these incredible creatures through its TurtleCare project. Volunteers tirelessly monitor nesting activity on beaches north and south of Rainbow Beach, rescue stranded or injured turtles, and collect vital data to aid turtle conservation efforts. While strolling along the beach at sunrise, keep an eye out for turtle tracks or hatchlings. If you spot any, report them to TurtleCare! Every report helps their team track turtle activity and contributes valuable data to the Mon Repos Turtle Research Centre. Even sightings of dead turtles or eggshells

provide essential information for researchers. Here’s how you can help: • Report turtle track sightings to TurtleCare: Phone or text 0493 511 207 • Email TurtleCare@CooloolaCoastcare.org.au for any queries or if you can join in local turtle monitoring. • Report sick, injured, or dead turtles: Call the Strandings Hotline at 1300 103 373 (available 24/7). • Important: Do not touch or move the turtles. If you see a pink “X” on a shell, it means it has already been reported.

Be a Turtle Hero! There are simple ways you can support the turtles: Turn off outside lights by 8pm – Light pollution confuses and disorients turtles and hatchlings. Leave no trace – Pack up all your rubbish to ensure a clean nesting environment.

Drive responsibly – Stick to designated beach access points, drive only at low tide, and avoid dunes to protect nesting sites. Be extra cautious when driving at night.

HAT IS ADAPT? Adapt is a weekly hands-on program where we learn to be individuals working together as a team in a non-judgmental space, to achieve personal and team goals set at the beginning of the term. In Adapt we can feel free to speak our minds and show our true self without being judged while learning to be a part of a team and learning to work as a team. We spend every Thursday in Adapt including lunch breaks, we work as a team to provide lunch for our other fellow Adapt team mates and Tin Can Bay staff. We use a rotational system to decide who is preparing lunch for the following week. Adapt takes place at the Tin Can Bay P-10 State School and we have our own area, creating an environmental

space where we can connect with nature and grow organic fruit and vegetables. We have our own undercover work benches. We also have a shed for storing power tools, heavy duty equipment and our personal protection equipment (PPE). Adapt supports our learning by goal setting, literacy and numeracy, life skills, trade and wellbeing. To be involved in the Adapt program we have to be nominated by a staff member from Tin Can Bay P-10 SS and then a team of head of departments and executive staff decide on the group to be selected. Generally, there are 6-7 students nominated each term. In Term 4 our team consisted of Phoenix, Blake, Delilah, Ruby, Levi, and myself Shaniya. My time in Adapt has enabled me

Unfortunately, frogs are in trouble worldwide due to habitat loss, pollution, and disease. Find a Frog in February (FFF) is a citizen science program facilitated by the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee (MRCCC) for the Mary, Mooloola, Maroochy, Noosa, Burrum Rivers and coastal areas communities. Come out for a fun night of frog finding and learning! Head over to the Cooloola Coastcare website for all the details at www. cooloolacoastcare.org.au.

Festive fun for Probus Kaye Olson

‘T

IS THE SEASON to be jolly…and so it was for nineteen members and guests who attended our Christmas Lunch.

Our tour director, Fay Dixon, made special arrangements for us to have Christmas lunch this year at Flippers where we were treated to a delicious roast meal and sticky date pudding to celebrate. Fay also decorated the tables, which looked great.

We were greeted by our enthusiastic raffle-seller, Barbara McKenzie, inviting us to take part in the raffle which consisted of a great variety of prizes donated by members, and also by the Sands Pharmacy who provided a beautiful gift basket and Woolworths a $50 gift voucher. We are very appreciative of the support of these local businesses. As we are a not-for-profit organisation, in-house raffles are a good way to raise funds to pay for extra benefits for our members.

Our members thoroughly enjoyed chatting before lunch was served very promptly and efficiently by Paul, our host. In the interval between mains and dessert Barbara and Fay drew

the raffle prizes which made many members very happy.

The entertainment was provided by Judy Beaton and Kaye Olson who presented an Australian Christmas poem and sang an original version of the traditional Christmas carol, ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’, written from the view of a cat which brings its owner a variety of gifts including two headless mice, five furry things, eight fish heads reeking etc. It gave the members a good laugh, especially those who owned cats. President Katrina van den Brenk thanked everyone for their attendance and those who had helped to organise the event, and wished members a happy time with family and friends at Christmas and invited members to join the committee for 2025 to continue enjoying Fun, Friendship and Fellowship in the New Year.

Above: Lee, Marie, Beth and Doug at our lovely Christmas Lunch. Right: Judy and Kaye entertained everyone with a hilarious twist on a Christmas classic song.

Probus is an organisation for the benefit of retirees and semi-retirees providing physical activities, mental stimulation, and the opportunity to meet and make new friends.

Meetings are held on each second Monday of the month at 2pm at the Sandcastle Motel in Tin Can Bay and include a guest speaker and a break

for afternoon tea and a chat.

New members are always welcome. For more details please contact our

President, Katrina on 0407 637 691 or Secretary, Kaye at cooloolaprobus@ gmail.com.

A great year for the Tin Can Bay RSL Ross Carruthers

We are very proud of some great upgrades to our facility throughout the year. They include enclosing and weather-proofing the rear verandah, new fans for the bar, rear verandah and kitchen, installation of a dogfriendly licensed outdoor area, and a great new mural around the eternal flame above the bar. We made a special point of celebrating the contribution of our volunteers this year with a Volunteers’ Luncheon held away from our SubBranch as well as a recent Members’ Christmas Luncheon complete with food truck and entertainment to thank all our members for their support through the year. Veterans’ Health Week was celebrated with a bus trip to Rainbow Beach and lunch with members

2

024 HAS BEEN another huge year for the Tin Can Bay RSL. Highlights included: well-attended Anzac Day; Vietnam Veterans Day; Remembrance Day; and War Widows commemorations where we remembered those who served and supported our nation. There were also record attendances at the monthly Drop-In Sausage Sizzle and Veterans and Community Morning Tea. The Sunday BBQ and Friday night Members Draw continued to be popular with locals and visitors alike. Special events held during the year included Trivia with Steph, Magic Mike and the team, and fantastic Australia Day and St Patrick’s Day functions.

Stitches and smiles ahead for Quilters Lesley Halter

F

IRSTLY, FROM ALL THE Tin Can Bay Quilt Club members, Happy New Year. We hope it is a happy and healthy one for you and your family. We have enjoyed a break over the holiday period and our first meeting for 2025 will be on 14 January at 9am at the Community Hall in Amity Place, so why not start the New Year by making new friends and come along and join us. We don‘t only quilt, some of us embroider, bead, or cross stitch. We are a varied bunch with multiple talents. Sheryl Ogden made this lovely keepsake using her mum’s handkerchief collection.

We held our Christmas lunch at the Cooloola Coast Bowls Club who did us proud with a two course meal fit for a king. Louise Hanks managed to win every game we played (obviously been practising!) and Shirley Flanagan won the huge hamper in our raffle. Many of our group managed to finish their projects in time for Christmas. Lynne Chamberlain made a beautiful Irish table runner, whilst Sheryl Ogden showed us her completed quilt using the handkerchiefs her mum had collected from all over – what a great idea and a lovely keepsake. Robyn Salmon has completed her quilt called ‘Me Without You’ for her sister. We are sure she will love it. And so until next month, happy sewing…

ONGRATULATIONS to several of our Heart Foundation Walkers who achieved milestones by the end of 2024, and will be receiving their awards in the post soon. Congratulations to recent members Gaile, Kerry, and Sharyn who gained the first award for their 25 Walks. Congratulations to Barbara, Linda Fewtrell, and two long-term members, Joan Barnier and Linda Murphy for attaining your second badge to pin on your hat, for your 200 Walks. Well done, so proud of you. Huge congratulations to Annabell for your 500 walks. Am looking forward to seeing that badge pinned on you. You are the third in our HFW groups to reach the 500. Welcome to our newest members, Denis and Noreen. Great to see you joining us on the track along our beautiful foreshore. ‘One Step at a Time Tin Can Bay’ Walkers surprised Arthur Jessup, the Tin Can Bay Baker recently, when presenting him with a couple of our new Heart Foundation Walking t-shirts. We even captured him on camera!

Nineteen ‘Cooloola Cove Wheelie Walkers’ enjoyed a delicious lunch, Secret Santa, and the ambience of the Tin Can Bay Yacht Club. Splendid to dress up, go out, and chatter in the social setting of The Yachtie. The Tin Can Bay group invited all HFW Walkers and spouses to the annual Christmas gathering near the RSL and Library for prawns, courtesy of Alan, plus everyone’s delectable plate of food to share, savoury and sweet. The wet weather did not deter twenty-seven of us from feasting and socialising. Except for Christmas Day, the adage: “Hearts still beating, feet still walking”, means that our walking groups still gather for Walk, Talk, Coffee during the holiday period, weather permitting! Happy New Year Greetings. Will your New Year’s Resolutions include exercising more during 2025? You are welcome to join Heart Foundation Walking. It’s free, fun and fantastic for lifting up your spirits. ‘CCWWalkers’ meet at 7am Mondays and Fridays near the bus shelter on Nautilus Drive, outside

T

HE ANNUAL Cooloola Cove and Tin Can Bay Santa Run proved very popular again as residents and visitors eagerly awaited roadside for the red man to pass by. There was even a surprise visit to the Wallu area because Santa wanted to spread the joy as far as he could.

Regular sighting updates were posted on the Cooloola Coast Youth Activity Project Facebook page by Jess, made possible by Donna and her yellow Kombi as the lead car. A big thank you to all those that donated lollies including Kids Bizz Tin Can Bay, Campbell’s Bakehouse, YAP

Santa Came to Rainbow W

HEN YOU HAVE community at heart, even wet weather can’t dampen your spirits! This couldn’t be truer for the Rainbow Beach Commerce and Tourism when the clouds rolled in and began to rain on all their hard work to bring some Christmas cheer to Rainbow Beach. Despite the challenges, the organising committee forged ahead to the delight of all that attended, with many memories made that will last a lifetime. With fun activities like facepainting, balloon sculptures, stage shows,

games, entertainment, animal farm, pony rides, yummy food, jumping castles turned water slides, and of course a visit from the big man himself making a grand entrance in a helicopter, there was something for everyone. The free Santa photos had a line up around the hall and out the door with the goodie bags proving very popular. The event was proudly funded by the Gambling Community Benefit Fund and the organising committee would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who made the day possible

HAT AN UNFORGETTABLE week it was for Tin Can Bay State School in mid-December! The Australian Volleyball Schools Cup (AVSC), the largest schoolbased sporting event in the Southern Hemisphere, brought together over 5,000 participants from 414 teams across 124 schools, including international teams from New Zealand. It’s a massive event—and this year marked Tin Can Bay’s 20th consecutive year of participation. What an incredible milestone! But the real excitement? For the first time since 2008, three Tin Can Bay teams battled it out in Gold Medal Matches! We couldn’t be prouder of all our amazing students for their hard work and determination. A huge congratulations to our Year 8 Boys Division 2 team, who brought home the Gold Medal! This success wouldn’t have been possible without the efforts of our dedicated coaches. A massive shoutout to Tony Arthur, Harper Holt, Suzie Arthur, Marc Suebpankoy, and Tekoa Kitto for their unwavering support and commitment to training and mentoring these talented young athletes. A special thank you to Tony Arthur for your countless hours spent training and for everything you do behind the scenes to prepare our teams for success.

We also want to extend our gratitude to Dave Arthur, whose passion, dedication, and belief has been truly inspiring. Your influence goes far beyond the volleyball court, teaching invaluable life lessons that will shape these children into confident, capable individuals. Finally, a big thank you to the parents and supporters who made this all possible: Dearnne Michelle Lee, Craig Sorrell, Fern Sorrell, Sandra Carol, Belinda Edwards, Simon Kitto, Teresa Kitto, Chris Ribot, Beverley Whish-Wilson—and everyone else working tirelessly behind the scenes. Your efforts ensured our children could attend this unforgettable event, and we are forever grateful! What a week, what a team, and what a school! Tin Can Bay, you’ve done everyone proud once again. Here’s to more gold medals and unforgettable moments in the future!

Dragons Make Waves At Christmas Regatta Toni Archer

Dragons Abreast Gold Coast Regatta — Currumbin The Weather Gods were very kind to the more than 20 teams who participated in the annual Christmas on the Creek Dragons Abreast Gold Coast Regatta over the weekend of 7-8 December. In perfect paddling weather, the Cooloola Dragons delivered some very strong performances throughout the competition. Cooloola managed to place sixth out of 14 teams in the 1-kilometre race. Paddling flat out for a full kilometre is not for the faint-hearted!! In other races, Cooloola Women’s Twenties (20 paddlers) produced a first place in the first heat and a second place in the second heat. The Mixed Twenties resulted in a third and second place in the heats. In the Women’s Tens a fifth and first place in the heats got Cooloola into the final where they eventually achieved fifth place. All in all, a very good effort from the Cooloola team and congratulations are very much in order. Cooloola Coach Sandra gave out a “big shout” to Cooloola’s steerers Jenny White and Dave Taranto and to the day’s drummers Mel, Jorja, Robyn C, and Gwyn. She also thanked Lyn and Kay for the much-needed assistance with the teams. The Coach said she was very proud of the team and the results at this regatta bode well for 2025. All the participants had a great time at the Currumbin Regatta and thoroughly enjoyed the friendship and camaraderie that is a big part of the dragon boat sport.

All members of the 2023/2024 management committee were re-elected for another year so for 2024/2025 the committee comprises of: President Robyn Clarke; Club Secretary Elaine Dimock; Treasurer Carol Stadelmann; and Vice President Toni Archer. We wish them another year of success and club growth. As part of the AGM, President Robyn Clarke delivered a very uplifting report which spoke of the achievements and contributions of many individual club members. Gratitude was expressed for Elaine Dimock as the long-term Club Secretary and ‘mentor’. Carol Stadelmann was applauded for her role as Treasurer and for successfully completing her first official audit. Toni Archer was commended for the many roles she undertakes including rostering the Dragon’s Lair Café and writing the monthly articles. Although not mentioned by Robyn, we should also acknowledge her work as President which has helped to steer the club to such a successful year. Others mentioned in the report include our Head Coach Sandra who has played a large part in improving club competitiveness and in helping to nurture new coaching talent in Lyn Worthey. Lyn is displaying huge talent and enthusiasm for the role. Sandra was also congratulated for

Learner Sweeps (Steerers) and Coach Sandra.

her election to the board of Dragon Boat Queensland (DBQ). Others who received a mention were ‘L-plater’ sweeps (steerers) Jorja, Laura, Harry, and Robyn A (absent) who are busily learning the skills necessary to control the dragon boats and those who are already proficient in this particular skill-set (Russel, Linda, and Kay). Special thanks were also given to Sylvia who, though retired from active

paddling, still provides training for the new sweeps from time-to-time. Tash and Kerri were also given a vote of thanks for helping with catering and bar-work for club events. Again, we wish all club members great success in the coming year. And on that note, we hope that everyone had a fantastic Christmas and we wish the entire community all the very best for a happy and prosperous new year!!!

Cooloola Dragon Boat Club AGM The club held their Annual General Meeting (AGM) and their end of year ‘bash’ in November. A great time was had by all despite the sweltering weather. Everyone enjoyed the food provided by Big Daddy Dees’ caterers who provided a range of burgers, loaded spuds, steak sangers, and other goodies.

Overall Champion Malcolm Kay.

Clubperson of the Year Rita Leong.

The club held its monthly BBQ and awards day and this day belonged to Ron Cox where he won the monthly two-day competition with his Flathead haul, also the largest fish for the month being a lure caught 70cm Flathead. Then he won the casting competition and to round it all off he also won the daily raffle. Yes one of those days, good onya Ron. Young Howard Rippon won the junior “Fish of the Month” with his nice trevally.

This month we will be kicking off the new year with the first of our workshops with Chris Rippon to give a talk on where and when to use different lures/plastics and how to get the best out of them - and if we twist his arm he may talk a bit about fly fishing. That’s about it for this month however I do wish to thank these local publications for allowing our club the opportunity to promote the club with our news. Sincerely, thanks guys. Tight lines and bent rods.

Junior Champion Howard Rippon.

HAT A GREAT turn out for the Annual Awards Dinner and Christmas Party with 130+ people attending, a good time was had by all. Santa arrived with gifts for the children. The Deck@SeaSalt catered for the evening with a Seafood Buffet that would rival any 5-star restaurant. Master of Ceremonies Carolyn Simpson kept the show rolling and the evening on track.

2024 Competition

Overall we had good competitor numbers to support the club’s 2024 competition and the competition was fierce with several results relying on the tie breaker to decide the winner. The tie breaker even came into play for the Champion Female Angler trophy with Helaine Wilesmith and Deb Regan both on 35 pts. Helaine won out with the greatest number of species caught diversifying her catch. John Hollingworth certainly put in the hard yards all year to accumulate 200 pts in the Inshore Club Championship well ahead of fellow competitors Gary Enklemann 92 pts and Chris McRae 81 pts. The Offshore Club Championship was taken out by a senior statesman of the club Jim (Maverick) McGuckin with 75 pts closely followed by Patty Glover 65 pts and Paul Glover 43 pts. Ollie Pearce outfished most of the adult inshore competitors putting in the hard yards to accumulate 118 pts and retain the Junior Champion Trophy, with Benny Stafford 38 pts and Molly Segger 30 pts rounding out the top 3. Deb Regan secured the RBAA Angling Award 2024 for the best improved angler in the club, while Benny Stafford secured RBAA Young Gun Award 2024 for the best improved Junior and Mia Pinney took out the Encouragement Award which is sponsored by Simon & Amanda from Salty Gear. Thank you to all those who weighed in fish this year and made for a successful competition schedule.

Thank You

Thank you to all who assisted the club – from setting up the weigh ins, running the bar, cooking the BBQ, judging the fish, recording scores, picking up trophies, selling raffle tickets, running the Junior Program, updating Facebook posts, writing trip reports, and managing the finances. It takes a whole lot of people to make the club successful and they are too numerous to name here. However, some special mentions to Tuppy, Buddy and the team from the Deck@SeaSalt for catering for the evening, Mandy Treloar and Graham McColloch for handling the raffle ticket sales, Carolyn Simpson MC, Ash and Scott - Rainbow Beach Sports

Tin Can Bay P-10 State School Year 6 Transition Day: A Glimpse into High School Life

O

N 28 NOVEMBER 2024, Year 6 students from Tin Can Bay, Rainbow Beach, and Wolvi gathered for a special transition day at Tin Can Bay School. This event was designed to ease their transition into high school next year by giving them a firsthand experience of what lies ahead. The day kicked off with a warm welcome from Mrs Robyn Cottrell, the Head of Department, who guided

the students through various aspects of secondary education. Ryder, the school’s friendly support dog, also made an appearance, bringing smiles to the students’ faces. Throughout the day, the Year 6 students participated in engaging activities, from cooking delicious apple turnovers to crafting keyrings in STEM. These hands-on sessions introduced them to some of the subjects they will encounter in high

school, helping to spark excitement for their upcoming studies. At the end of the day, the students returned to their primary schools, having made new friends and gained confidence for their high school journey next year.

HE TIN CAN BAY School endof-year concert brought holiday cheer with a fun and unique twist! The event was organised by Mrs Maree Dorey and Mrs Jayne Schwajhardt, showcasing the talents and creativity of our students. The concert featured an exciting variety of acts, from a humorous take on school exam pressures to the upbeat ‘Party in Tin Can Bay’ and the delightful ‘Reindeer Hokey Pokey.’

Santa himself made a surprise appearance, trading his traditional suit for board shorts and thongs, much to the crowd’s delight.

Our amazing hosts— Mitchell, Amy, Aleea, and Tia—kept the energy high, guiding the audience through an unforgettable program. Families and friends gathered to celebrate the year’s achievements, share laughter, and embrace the festive spirit.

Council Corner Summer Safety As we dive into the new year and focus on our resolutions, why not add one that helps safeguard your household, property, or business? This year, make it your resolution to be ready. Gympie Regional Council’s Summer Safety campaign offers residents and visitors practical tips and resources to prepare for extreme weather events, including storms, floods, and bushfires. All of these valuable resources can be found on the Summer Safety page of the Council’s website. With our region’s history of wild weather, there’s no better time than now to get prepared.

Parks Mowing Recent storms, heavy rain, and hot weather have wreaked havoc on our mowing and maintenance schedule. Our dedicated parks teams worked through Christmas to tackle the ever-growing list of tasks. You might notice that some parks are only partially mowed. Don’t worry, we’ll be back! In some cases, we’re allowing areas that are still too wet to dry out a little longer before mowing. We are prioritising high-risk and high-profile spaces, which means some parks might not receive the same level of attention as usual. But rest assured, we’ll get there as soon as possible! If you see our crews out and about, give them a wave and a smile.

Federation Park Community Garden Cooloola Cove residents are invited to come along for a chat about the proposed Community Garden at Federation Park! Share your ideas, find out how to get involved and connect with your community. Choose a session time that suits you! • Thursday, 13 February 2025, 10:00am or • Saturday, 15 February 2025, 10:00am Meeting at the Cooloola Cove Veterans Hall, 1 Santa Maria Court. See you there! Ronnie Timperon

Rainbow Beach Learning Community Families from both the Rainbow Beach & Gympie Learning Communities enjoyed a wonderful end of year breakup in the sheltered waters off Wes Mitchell Park in Tin Can Bay in early December under the leadership of Alfie and Abel from Pindari Adventures who brought along their fleet of 14 kayaks. The young people learnt how to paddle backwards as well as forwards, how to raft up, how to move from one raft to another without ending up in the water, all without running into each other! Learning Community activities will take place in Cooloola Cove in the early part of next year due to the Rainbow Beach Community Centre undergoing renovations. Most of the families who attend on a regular basis live in Cooloola or Tin Can Bay so it will be less distance for them to travel to activities which leaders are hoping will include being involved in the proposed community garden at Cooloola Cove.

Beach & Bay Community Pantry

The Community Pantry had a huge response to their Christmas hampers in December with 120 hampers distributed from the Cooloola Cove Vet’s Hall and Rainbow Beach Community Centre. Hampers consisted of pantry items, jelly, lollies, chips, crackers and other goodies, plus donations from Woolworths, Aldi, and IGA. A huge thanks to Tin Can Bay Community Church for their generous donation of funds that were used to purchase extra goodies to make the Christmas hampers even more special. Every year in Australia, $2.5 billion of unsold household goods are wasted. An organisation called Good360 Australia reduces this need and waste by connecting brand new unsold goods to people in need, creating a Circle of Good, where everyone benefits. As part of local charity Pindari Life, the Community Pantry has access to items from Good360 which included 30 Lego Friends supermarket sets that were given away to local families. A free Christmas lunch was held on the last hamper day for the year at the Cooloola Cove Vet’s Hall with

45 people enjoying a delicious twocourse meal prepared by Community Pantry volunteers and locals. Local musician Keith provided a wonderful selection of songs during the meal and fabulous lucky door prizes were given away. Groups of friends sat with locals who came on their own and families new to the area with new friendships formed. Thank you to the Tin Can Bay Lions Club who provided delicious Christmas puddings for dessert, Gabriella from the Qld CWA who baked some delicious goodies for people to take home and Jess Milne who provided the Christmas decorations that made the tables look festive. Members of the Military Police who recently conducted exercises at Cooloola Cove were impressed with the community spirit of volunteers of the various local groups who operate out of the Vet’s Hall, including the Community Pantry. To show their appreciation, representatives from the Military Police met with them before Christmas to pass on donations that will be used to benefit the local community in 2025. The Community Pantry’s $10 fortnightly hampers, which consist of pantry items one fortnight and fresh fruit and veggies from Mitchell’s Gympie the other fortnight, plus donations from Aldi in Gympie and local supermarkets, will recommence in 2025 on Thursday 9 January at the Rainbow Beach Community Centre and Thursday 16 January from the Cooloola Cove Vet’s Hall. Could all of the Community Pantry’s regular clients and any new clients wishing to order hampers from this month, please text your name and location to 0413 135 867. The Community Pantry would not be able to operate without the team of wonderful volunteers who help out at Cooloola Cove and Rainbow Beach each fortnight. A Volunteers’ Thank You Lunch was held on Friday 20 December where each was presented with a Heart of Hope with the words “Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they have the heart” or a mug to recognise their dedication to the local community. We need your help! The Community Pantry has been given a great opportunity to raise funds for their important work of supporting local families through the Containers for

Change recycling program. We are looking for volunteers who can be available for 45 minutes on Thursdays at 1.30pm to empty recycle bins at the Rainbow Beach Caravan Park and transport them to the Community Centre car park where Containers for Change will take them off your hands and deposit 10c per item into our bank account. If you can help out on a fortnightly or monthly basis, please contact Ronnie on 0413 135 867. All those who are interested in being involved in the proposed community

garden at Cooloola Cove will have the opportunity to attend a meeting facilitated by Council on Thursday 13 February or Saturday 15 February at the Cooloola Cove Vet’s Hall where they can share their ideas and vision for the garden. Please see the advertisement in this month’s paper on page 2.

– cooloola city farm PLANT OF THE MONTH – January

Red-fruited Palm Lily (Cordyline rubra)

A

SURPRISINGLY hardy, small palm-like plant of the rainforest understory. The bright red fruits contrast against the broad dark green leaves. It also looks good in flower with sprays of small purple and white. Cordyline rubra grows to 2-3m tall and prefers a sheltered position (some wind protection) and part shade or shade with soils high in organic matter. If a manure-based fertiliser is applied and the ground is well mulched this species can grow on quite poor soils. Once established it is

quite drought tolerant. In the garden it will help add lushness and fill in open shady areas under trees or on shady edges. It can be quite compact on the shaded side of a building or even look great in pots. The attractive red fruits are not edible. VOLUNTEERS WANTED: If you love plants, would you like to learn propagation techniques or have experience with plants we would welcome your help. We at City Farm are Centrelink approved.

Cooloola City Farm Nursery is located opposite the Community Centre at 17 Amity Place off Tin Can Bay Road. Opening Hours: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays 8am-3.00pm. Plus third Saturday month (TCB Market Day) 8am-12 Cash or EFTPOS acceptable Phone: 0422 215 953 secretary @ccfn.org.au SHINING A LIGHT ON THE COOLOOLA COAST

Rainbow Beach

Welcome to 2025!

Storm Season

2025 is going to be yet another exci ng year, and we look forward to what lies ahead.

At me of wri ng a lot of local roads are very wet, slippery, and some even underwater. Please, to those travelling, do not a empt to cross any flooded roads.

Upon reading this we will be in the peak of the summer holidays, and we hope you are all enjoying yourselves so far.

We’d also like to thank all of our local and visi ng customers for their valued support during this holiday season, and beyond. Your support goes a long way towards giving back to the local community, and is very much appreciated.

Rainbow Beach IGA turns 20!

You may be aware that during December, Rainbow Beach IGA celebrated 20 years of business. Aer reloca ng from the Sunshine Coast, Ma & Bernie O’Connell opened Rainbow Beach IGA in December 2004. Since then, along with son Jus n, they have grown from one store to three.

With summer in full-force, we’d like to remind everyone to stay safe out there, especially on the roads.

You may have no ced that Main Roads/Council commenced some roadworks on Tin Can Bay Road just before school holidays. While they are likely some much needed safety upgrades, sadly the ming was quite poor with the rain, and this has made that sec on of the road rather dangerous to travel on. So again, please be careful. Un l next month, take care and we will catch you in store soon!

Matt, Bernie, Justin, Liam & our friendly staff at the IGA

The family acquired Tin Can Bay IGA in 2017 and opened the brand-new Imbil IGA in September 2024. The addi on and subsequent success of these stores is proof that Ma , Bernie, and Jus n certainly know what they are doing! A huge congratula ons to Ma , Bernie, and Jus n on this achievement. They have built the business from the ground up and have been carrying it ever since, to make it as successful as it is today. The next few years are going to be par cularly exci ng. We’d also like to give a special men on to Anne e, who has been with us since 2006. She has been with the business since it's early days, and we are proud to have such a loyal and caring team member. Lastly, we’d like to say a big thank you to all our present and past staff members who have been involved with the store over the years. Without all your efforts, the store would not be the way it is today.

Christmas Party - Tin Can Bay

Although our main Christmas party event at Tin Can Bay was cancelled, a smaller event s ll went ahead, which included face pain ng, a visit from Santa, and the drawing of winners for an in-store compe on - “Decorate a Bauble”.

Thank you to those who a ended this event on Friday 13th December, and congratula ons to the winners of the bauble compe on. It’s events like these that really bring out the local spirit, and we are proud to be host to events such as this one. This is a paid adver sement and the views of the writer are not necessarily the views of the Rainbow Beach Community News owners or staff.

A big hello to all our valued customers - both local and visi ng, come and see your friendly staff at your local IGA today
