What is OSHC

Child Care Subsidy

OSHC stands for ‘Out of School Hours Care’ and offers families within the community an option for the care of their children during hours outside of school hours.

What is CCS (Child Care Subsidy)

The Child Care Subsidy is assistance to help parents manage the cost of Child Crae fees. Initiated through Services Australia, the amount of support each family receives depends on each family’s circumstances. More information and application for CCS can be found at https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/ child-care-subsidy

What does this mean for parents?

Be it work, appointments or general life responsibilities, Rainbow Beach P&C have created OSHC for parents, both within the school and wider community, to help manage life a little easier if needed. Along with care in the hours after school on a normal week, we also have care available to families during the school holidays. Called ‘Vacation Care’, this program has been developed to keep kids active and creative during the school holidays when parents are often working.

How to enrol at OSHC

Enrolment is online via our software system Xplor. When families contact our OSHC we will grab your details and email through the link below which will start the process by gathering all your and your child/childrens details. Once approved you will receive a confirmation email with another link to download our Xplor Home App and you can start enrolling! Enrolment in OSHC can be daunting but OSHC staff and the P&C are always happy to help and aid in any way, just contact us at oshcrainbowbeach@gmail.com

More Than Spaghetti and Hand Gestures:

The Depth of Italian Migration Heritage in the Gympie Area

NOVEMBER SAW the full launch of local Cultural Facilitator Elisa Mele

Seul’s project, and she’s been a busy bee, connecting with community members across the region.

As her husband would say, “She can talk!” Yet, as the RADF-supported project, ‘Italian-Australian Heritage: Migration Stories and Cultural Contributions to the Gympie Region,’

unfolds, Elisa has discovered that listening is now her most required skill.

Through these conversations, some truly remarkable stories have come to light, including accounts of Italian POWs (Prisoners of War) sent to Queensland during WWII to work on farms in Goomboorian and the Mary Valley. These men left a mark on the

region, a piece of local contemporary history often overlooked yet essential in understanding our cultural landscape.

Elisa’s project brings these voices forward, offering fresh perspectives on Gympie’s modern history and sparking a deeper conversation about diversity, barriers and adaptability.

Community Input Sought on Proposed Overtaking Lane for Tin Can Bay Road

THE DEPARTMENT of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has completed preliminary investigations for an overtaking lane/s on Tin Can Bay Road and is now seeking community feedback before finalising a decision on a proposed location.

Tin Can Bay Road presents several challenges from a road design perspective when it comes to overtaking lane upgrades. Several locations between Gympie and Goomboorian contain winding and hilly terrain, frequent side road and property accesses, narrow road corridor sections, and sensitive environmental areas.

These need to be considered, together with road design standards and requirements that cannot be easily achieved within these constraints. Other areas around the mid-way point on Tin Can Bay Road are less constrained, but already have overtaking opportunities through broken centre lines.

During preliminary investigations, TMR received feedback suggesting motorists often cannot use the broken lines at the mid-way point to overtake because of the volume of traffic travelling in the other direction, and may have a preference for a dedicated overtaking lane/s at this location.

Before finalising investigations, TMR would like to hear from motorists who regularly travel on Tin Can Bay Road, to help understand how widespread this issue is, and if the community has

any further feedback on the location of a proposed overtaking lane/s.

There is currently no funding for detailed design work or construction of an overtaking lane/s, however planning phase investigations will help TMR to assess the project’s priority status for future funding.

Providing feedback is a quick and easy process and can be done via the TMR online engagement hub https:// yoursay-projects.tmr.qld.gov.au/tincan-bay-overtaking-lanes (or scan QR code), by emailing bundaberg. office@tmr.qld.gov.au, or by calling 1300 728 390.

HE FIRIES FROM the Tin Can Bay Fire Station have had a letter from Santa to ask if they are available to take him on a run around Cooloola Cove and Tin Can Bay on Monday 23 December 2024.

The crew were quick to reply with a big YES so keep an eye on the Cooloola Coast Youth Activity Project (YAP) Facebook page for more details on the Santa Run, including maps of the route where the big man is on the day as he travels through each township.

Navigating Mental Health during the Festive Season

T

HE FESTIVE SEASON is often associated with joy, togetherness, and celebration. However, for many, it can also be a challenging time for mental health. The pressure to meet societal expectations, financial stress, and feelings of loneliness can overshadow the season’s cheer.

1. The Pressure to Be ‘Festive’

Social media and advertising often portray the holiday season as a time of perfection—lavish gatherings, gift-giving, and unending happiness. For those struggling with anxiety or depression, this expectation can feel overwhelming. It’s okay to not feel cheerful all the time. Allow yourself to experience emotions authentically rather than forcing festive participation.

2. Financial Strain

The pressure to buy gifts, host events, and travel can lead to financial stress. Setting a realistic budget and sticking to it can help ease this burden. Meaningful connections and thoughtful gestures often hold more value than extravagant spending.

3. Loneliness and Isolation

For individuals who are geographically or emotionally distant from loved ones, the festive season can intensify feelings of loneliness. Consider volunteering, reaching out to friends, or attending community events to build connections. Even small acts of kindness can foster a sense of belonging.

4. Maintaining Healthy Boundaries

Family gatherings can sometimes stir unresolved tensions or disagreements.

Prioritise your well-being by setting boundaries, whether that means limiting your time in certain environments or declining invitations that might harm your mental health.

5. Self-Care is Key

Amidst the busyness, make time for self-care. Whether it’s taking a walk, meditating, or simply enjoying a quiet moment, these small acts can help you stay grounded.

Avoid overcommitting and recognise when you need to rest.

6. Seek Support if Needed

If the season feels particularly overwhelming, don’t hesitate to seek support. Talking to a trusted friend, family member, or mental health professional can provide relief and perspective.

The festive season doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful. By prioritising mental health, setting boundaries, and embracing imperfection, you can navigate this time with resilience and ease.

Servicing

Markets

DID YOU SEE our new gazebo at the November markets? The walls are printed with photos of our community centre activities and highlighting some of our fabulous volunteers.

It is a one-stop shop with books for sale, $100 board lucky numbers, lost and found items, membership forms, and information on local activities. Why not ask about our volunteer roles and join our merry band of locals making a difference?

Our monthly markets are held on the second Saturday of each month,

inside and outside of our Community Centre in the main street of Rainbow Beach. Next markets are on 9 December from 7am to midday. We all love our fur babies but dogs are not permitted inside the hall, regardless of size or being carrying, and must be on a leash at all times outside. Thank you for cooperation and understanding.

Kitchen Upgrade

O

UR HALL KITCHEN will be briefly out of action while it undergoes an improvement early in 2025.

The existing stainless steel benchtops will have stainless drawers, doors, and shelves fitted to improve storage ergonomics,

kitchen hygiene and workplace safety for our volunteers and all hall hirers.

The upgrade was made possible with a Community Facilities grant from Gympie Regional Council.

Car Boot Sale

AFTER THE VERY wet day before, a small but enthusiastic group of stallholders set up under the hall eaves in case it rained, but the weather smiled on our Car Boot Sale on 16 November and it held off until we all got home.

Our event was just one of more than 12,800 garage sales across the country taking part in the

National Garage Sale Trail. More than 3.7 million pre-loved items were set free from garages, sheds, and closets around the country.

Even more importantly, they didn’t go to landfill. Thanks to our volunteers and the brave stallholders for making this happen. Let’s try to do even better next year.

Floor Repairs

REGULAR HALL USERS will know that our lovely timber floor has had damage issues and pleased to know that it is being repaired in January.

The hall is now 12 years old and is starting to need repairs and replacements. In October the hot water system was replaced at Council’s expense.

In November, CIRS paid for a major service and mechanism replacements for our very high louvres. In December, Gympie Council will contribute 50% of the cost of replacing all the external lighting as the sensor mechanisms were no longer functioning. CIRS will cover the other 50% as required by our Management Agreement.

saving and fundraising volunteers, and for the ongoing financial support from Gympie Regional Council.

Pickleball and Table Tennis

PICKLEBALL IS ON Monday afternoon from 1-3pm, $5 per session. First session $5 includes a CIRS membership to provide insurance cover. Table Tennis is played in the hall every Wednesday from 8.30am to 10.30am for a gold coin donation. No bookings required.

Also provided by Council in November were new keypads for arming our security systems in the hall and the CIRS office which had to be compatible with the Library’s new swipe card security system.

There is always something that needs money spent on it and we are grateful for all donations from the public, contributions from our cost-

Defibrillator For Boardriders

IN A FIRST FOR CIRS, we have auspiced a grant on behalf of another local group. We successfully applied for a Community Development Grant from Gympie Regional Council to purchase a marine defibrillator package and First Aid Training for Rainbow Beach Boardriders’ members.

The defib will be secured in their club trailer which is towed to every Boardriders’ beach activity.

This will be a great lifesaving tool for Teewah and Double Island Point beachgoers in an emergency as there is often no phone signal up there.

The training will include CPR so that the Boardriders’ members can feel confident as first responders that they are using the defib correctly and providing the best possible outcome with their new skills.

The First Aid training will be undertaken in late January/early February in our hall and there may be places for more Boardriders’ or other members of the community.

The course takes 6 hours and costs $120. If you are interested, call Fiona on 0423 344 316 or email rainbowcommunitycirs@gmail.com to book a spot.

2025 CIRS Membership

AREMINDER THAT 2025 CIRS memberships are due 1 January 2025. They are still only $5 per person. Any new memberships or renewals received since 1 November 2024 will be counted as paid for 2025. Memberships can be paid in our office (cash or card), at the markets, or by bank transfer. Thank you for your support again.

P&C News

ARE APPROACHING the end of Term 4 and time is flying by! Our students are busy learning and working towards their final assessments of the year. They have all grown and achieved so much since the start of the year and we are very proud of each and every one of them!

In Term 3, we were very privileged to have a visit from the Queensland Opera. The travelling trio are visiting regional schools throughout Queensland for 10 weeks, performing Hansel & Gretel, a well-known fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. The students and staff were in awe of the spectacular performance.

During the September school holidays, our Outside School Hours Care Program was a popular place to be! We had some of our highest

attendance yet and the children all had a wonderful time. Some of the favourite activities were Barefoot Bowls, excursion to the park, wheels day, cooking and games with their friends.

We are busy putting together a calendar of fun filled activities for the December/January Holidays so keep an eye out for this! To enrol your child, you can contact us directly on 0480 501 870 or email oshcrainbowbeach@ gmail.com.

Alternatively, you can enrol online, the link is also on our P&C Facebook page. Our regular hours of operation are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 2.30pm – 5.30pm and Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 8.00am –4.00pm during school holidays.

It’s that time of year again, where the Police Beat wall receives its annual facelift. The year 6 Students, along with Mr Bennett, Ms McColl, and

We were fortunate to receive a visit from Queensland Opera, performing Hansel & Gretel.

Miss Sam have been busy designing and painting the wall.

This year’s theme has been inspired by the beach. We are really happy with their design and the teamwork the students displayed. The students are very proud of their work and to have left their mark in our community. With the weather heating up, we have commenced our swimming program which is being held each Thursday. This is a wonderful opportunity to witness the growth in confidence and ability. We are very grateful to the Rainbow Beach Sports Club for their ongoing support.

We appreciate the opportunity for our school to use their facility and the Club bus. This enables us to deliver our program without any out-ofpocket expenses for families. Kylie Summers and Kirsty McCarthy have been invaluable in delivering this program.

On behalf of the wider school community, we would like to thank both of them, and the Sports Club. During week 3, the year 5/6 class went on a camp to the Sunshine Coast Recreation Centre in Currimundi.

P&C News

From previous page

The students returned a little weary-eyed, but buzzing with happiness. By all reports they had a fantastic time.

Staff were very proud of all students for the way they conducted themselves. As with all camps they were taken outside of their comfort zone and rose to the challenge. Some of highlights included: the high rope giant swing, bodyboarding, catapults, archery and much more!

Thank you to local businesses who have kindly donated to our 2025 monster Christmas raffle. We have been overwhelmed by the strong support. Already we have had a very positive response and are grateful for the generosity of the wider school community.

There is a prize pool totalling over $11,000 and this would not have been possible without the generosity of our sponsors. Tickets are now out and about in the community – you have to be in it to win it!

There will also be an incentive prize on offer for the student who sells the most tickets – good luck. Prizes will be drawn at the School Christmas Concert which is open to all to attend. The concert will again be held at the Rainbow Beach Community Centre on Tuesday 3 December at 5.30pm. The Christmas Concert is a chance to reflect on the year and recognise some of the great individual

achievements from each grade.

It is also an opportunity to demonstrate the creative talent with class and choir performances. Save the date, we would love to see you all there!

The P&C AGM will be coming up early in 2025. At this time all positions within the Executive and General Committee will be open for application. If anyone is interested in joining the P&C in 2025, please reach out, many hands make light work. It is a very fulfilling, and a safe space to have your say.

It is also the only means of fundraising for our students which enables the school to keep camp and excursion costs to a minimum.

Being able to give back to our school and community is very rewarding.

COOLOOLA COAST

Art Group brush up their skills

VARIED ACTIVITIES kept the Cooloola Coast Art Group engaged in creative endeavours during November. The new ‘dip and sip’ watercolour session, on the fourth Friday of each month has been well attended, with Kay Muir demonstrating her techniques. The members then enjoy a sip of their favourite beverage and discuss the results.

On Tuesday mornings, president, Kerri Southern leads the group in exploring tone with pastel and conté crayon. After learning the techniques, each member is able to apply the new

knowledge to their own subject. The exercises are ideal for both beginners or those with more experience. Monday afternoons are either life drawing or plein-air drawing on the foreshore of either Tin Can Bay or Cooloola Cove. Though each of these are untutored, willing assistance is given to those who would like some. If you’d like to join in, you are very welcome. OHSC fun!

Probus serves up Fun

COOLOOLA COAST Probus Club members have been out and about as usual having a good time and enjoying Fun, Friendship and Fellowship – our motto.

October was marked by a number of special days and it was also Probus Month, a time for members to celebrate being part of their club. Thanks to a generous grant from the Probus Association of Queensland, seventeen members and guests enjoyed a Chinese lunch at the Tin Can Bay Country Club.

There was lots of fun and chatter and included Judy Beaton (formerly Kiddle) presenting some jokes. Our president, Katrina van den Brenk, was the lucky winner of the raffle prize provided by Marie Parker. It was obvious to all the other diners at the club that we were a happy group of people who liked going out, having fun and socialising with fellow members.

From time to time our members are invited to milestone events hosted by other clubs in the Wide Bay area and in October the Gympie Widgee Club celebrated their 34th Birthday at the Gympie Bowls Club at Southside.

Thirty-four Probians were in attendance including some from Gympie Club and John and Kaye Olson from our club. We were entertained by two local guitarists plus Jim from Gympie Widgee Club and Caroline from Gympie Club with a variety of songs.

The ladies at the Bowls Club served a delicious lunch, President Ian MacGregor presented a potted history of the club, and Secretary Norm organised the raffles. It was a most enjoyable day.

Melbourne Cup Day saw a small group of our members dressed up and attended the Cooloola Coast Bowls Club for a top day –champagne on arrival, sweepstakes, entertainment, a Calcutta, delicious lunch, and watching the race on the big screen. No great fortunes were made on the day, but it was good fun.

Meetings are held on each second Monday of the month at 2pm at the Sandcastle Motel in Tin Can Bay and include a guest speaker and a break for afternoon tea and a chat.

New members are always welcome. For more details please contact our President, Katrina on 0407 637 691 or Secretary, Kaye at cooloolaprobus@ gmail.com.

Arthur Leggo – a Living Legend

IT IS REMEMBRANCE DAY and I spot

Arthur Leggo sitting in our RSL’s recently renovated back veranda with a cold beer in front of him. “How are you, Arthur?” I say, “Any chance of a chat?”

“Of course, Ross” he said, and we settle down for an enthralling 30 minutes of World War II and life memories. What an amazing man!

Arthur Leggo was born on 2 December 1925 in Sydney. As soon as he was able, he applied to enlist in the Australian Army in December 1943 during World War II. However, it wasn’t easy. Arthur was employed as an Assistant Motor Mechanic, an occupation that was, at the time, regarded as a Protected Industry.

To enlist in the Army, he first had to get approval from his boss, and then had to get approval from Manpower Australia. After significant effort and nagging he was able to gain those approvals, and he enlisted in the and then helped escort them to a new Prisoner of War camp in Hay. He was then sent to Canugra in Queensland, loaded onto trucks, then to a wharf and shipped off to Wewack in New Guinea where he went ashore and became part of 2nd 4th Infantry

Sergeant and posted to Holdsworthy Barracks and then to Victoria Barracks in Sydney. In 1946 he left the Army to be with his girlfriend, who then proceeded to dump him! Not a great welcome home for a young soldier.

Arthur loved the camaraderie of the Army! He had four great mates in recruit training, and they met up again after he was discharged. He enjoyed the discipline and structure of the Army and took a while to settle once he became a civilian again.

After the army he became a truck driver to see Australia and spent 12 months driving trucks. He then became a roustabout with his great mate Jim from the Army. He worked at a small town near Tamworth where he met Doris who was cooking at the hotel he lived in and ended up marrying her. They had three children and were still married when she passed on three months short of their 60th wedding anniversary.

Arthur moved to Tin Can Bay in 1989 after retiring from his job at the particleboard factory in Gympie. He first joined the RSL after he was discharged in 1946 and joined the RSL in Tin Can Bay in 1993.

Arthur turns 99 on 2 December this year, and in my opinion is well set up to make it to the magic age of 100. Arthur’s advice to any youngsters today is to join the services – it will set you up for life.

Well, Arthur we all appreciate your advice and what you did for your country – thank you for your service!

The Making of Rainbow Beach History Book

THERE MAY BE 5 or 6 books left from this Part 1 Publication. The only place these could be available would be at the Rainbow Beach Tourist Information Centre with Sam and Maureen Mitchell. We got 450 books printed, and I guess now it is nearly time for Part 2! Rainbow Beach was only gazetted as a town in 1969, and there was a 25 year anniversary in 1994 when longterm resident Bob Elmer cut the Cake. Was it due to Covid there was no 50 year celebration??

How about a 60 year Celebration! Just putting it out there, maybe culminating with the publication of Part 2? I know of some people already writing their story for the future publication.

Rainbow Beach DroughtRunners Report

THANKFULLY WE have had another eventful month, luckily again NO disasters. There have been some nasty fires in Victoria and southeast South Australia but fortunately no loss of life. Western Victoria and a lot of South Australia is close to drought conditions.

How good is it to see so much rain through Queensland and a lot of New

South Wales which sets up those areas for another productive year. How great to see the dams at near capacity before the wet season really sets in.

Hopefully the new LNP Government can do what Labor neglected to do over decades by building dams to conserve water for increased agricultural productivity. RB DroughtRunners cash reserves are ready to be used when needed in

TCBCAMS –Our last blurb for the year!

WELL, HERE WE ARE – nearly at the end of another year. Before it’s out though we’ve got a few more activities to participate in.

Firstly, our members will be running the IGA BBQ in the Tin Can Bay IGA carpark on Friday 13 December. Then shed members and their partners will be gathering for our Christmas celebrations at the Tin Can Bay Country Club on Saturday 16 December.

And, lastly, we’ll be running another community BBQ on Saturday 7 December at the Vets Hall in Cooloola Cove. So don’t forget to bring some spare change for a sausage and a drink – it makes it an easy and cheap meal out.

Our up-and-coming potters have been trialling their skills in making bowls and orchid flower holders. We’ve been using the Gympie pottery club’s kiln to fire and glaze the works and we’re turning out some weird and wonderfully creative pieces.

We anticipate pottery classes will be up and running at the Shed which will be on sale at our Christmas Shed Shop Sale day on Saturday 21 December.

As well, we’ve got some unique

ONE STOP SHOP

Christmas decorations available such as this two-dimensional table centrepiece (pictured). So come down and bag a bargain Xmas gift.

And, whilst the Shed will be closed from 23 December, we’ll be opening our doors to old and new members from Monday January. With the membership fee for 2024 being set at $60, it is great value for money as it allows you priority enrolment in unique workshops and daily access to ‘The Shed’ and its facilities.

Flood, Fire, or Drought.

One thing that does really annoy me are many of our doomsday weather forecasters, with their long term forecasts and by using the NEW term ‘catastrophic’ far too often. This month Victoria had their first burst of warm weather (35 degrees for one day) and it was called a ‘heatwave’.

I can well remember in early October 1982 when shearing in Western Victoria we had four consecutive

Speaking of which, we’ll be expanding our horticultural activities with a community garden in the new year as well as all our regular offerings.

We’d like to take the opportunity now to thank all the local individuals and businesses for your support during 2024.

days over 40 degrees and with shed temp near 50 degrees we had to stop work! Not Global Warming.

Anyway many thanks to Wayne Kerle and Tin Can Bay Bakery (Arthur) for their wonderful work and fundraising for the DroughtRunners. To all in Tin Can and Cooloola many thanks for your collections for the 10c returns. One day I guess we will use it and much more. Stay safe all.

Quilters in great form!

Lesley Halter

HELLO AGAIN from the Tin Can Bay Quilters Club. The past four weeks we have been busy finishing off our projects ready for Christmas.

The last of the beginners’ classes was held at the end of October and now we are starting to see the blocks placed together to form a quilt. See the accompanying photo for one of the completed quilts by Steph Jones

Last week we also had a workshop tutored by Dianne Rippon on how to make a tape measure holder. They are really cute and very fiddly to make but worth it. About 10 ladies took the plunge and had a go.

And finally our Melbourne Cup fun in the form of a Quilters Club Race:

We will be finishing this year on 10 December and will be back on 14 January 2025. We wish you all a Happy Christmas and a safe New Year. Why not start the New Year with a new hobby and come and join us - 9am at the community hall on Tuesdays.

Congratulations Walkers

CONGRATULATIONS to Christine Houston for attaining your first 100 officially recorded walks with the Heart Foundation Walking (HFW). Wear your badge proudly. Well done. Welcome to our newest member, Noreen. This year we average at least one new member each month, which is marvellous, as we love sharing the joy of walking along our beautiful foreshore. Sadly we have lost four members, two moving away from the Cooloola Coast.

We were saddened deeply by the passing of Albert McAlister in June, and again by the shock of the death of Bruce Stevenson in October. Val and Sandy, we feel for you and your families, especially this first Christmas, without your beloved Albert and Bruce. We offer you both our continuing support and friendship.

Linda Fewtrell and Betsy Quince returned from their wonderful European holiday last month, extolling the benefits of joining our HFW groups. Linda reports:

“We did a lot of walking during our trip, and were able to keep up with

the group each day. In Paris a fellow traveller reported that we had walked 20,000 steps one particular day.”

Betsy added: “Neither of us could have done that twelve months ago without our regular walking with Heart Foundation groups.”

One way to help fund the National Heart Foundation is by buying goods and apparel from their Online Shop. Some of us are wearing new HFW T-Shirts as we Walk, Talk, Coffee, Repeat our enjoyment of walking together.

Now that it’s summer, ‘One Step at a Time Tin Can Bay’ early walking group leaves at 6am, while the later group leaves at 6.30am from the Tin Can Bay Bakery on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

‘Cooloola Cove Wheelie Walkers’ meet by 7am Mondays and Fridays at the bus shelter on Nautilus Drive outside the shopping centre. Why don’t you join us? It’s free, fun and a great way to improve our physical, mental, social and emotional health.

Walk Yourself Happy! Queries? Contact Judy Beaton 5486 2181 or myself on 0400 756 615. We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Greetings!

Santa swaps Sleigh for Helicopter:

Excitement builds for the 5th annual ‘Santa Comes to Rainbow’ Event!

R

AINBOW BEACH is buzzing with holiday spirit as the community gears up for the muchanticipated 5th annual Santa Comes to Rainbow event! This cherished tradition has grown into a festive highlight, and Santa himself is making waves—literally—by arriving in true Rainbow Beach style.

No sleigh needed! Santa, fondly dubbed ‘the fat man’ by locals, will make his grand entrance via helicopter, a mode of transport he’s come to love.

“It’s no secret anymore,” Santa joked, “and let’s just say I’m grateful for a little horsepower over reindeer power. Rudolph and the crew deserve a break!”

Santa couldn’t resist a laugh, sharing how Rainbow Beach businesses convinced his head elf, Buddy, to trade reindeer for rotors.

“This community is full of nice people who know how to put on a spectacular event,” Santa added.

This year’s celebration promises to be bigger and better than ever, with something for everyone—festive music, local vendors, delicious food, and fun activities for the whole family.

The event is the heart and soul of Rainbow Beach, bringing locals and visitors together for a magical day.

Lovely long paddle for Dragons

The Long Paddle:

It is around this time of year that the Cooloola Dragon Boat embark on their ‘Long Paddle’. This year, on 20 October, the Cooloola paddlers were joined by members of their sister club from Hervey Bay.

Unfortunately, it turned out to be a very windy day so instead of paddling to the power lines as usual, the paddlers decided to explore the calmer upper reaches and Green Zone of Snapper Creek.

They spotted the usual array of our aquatic wildlife including turtles and then found a suitable sandy stretch where crews could enjoylunch.

All in all, it was a great day and all crew members enjoyed the Long Paddle.

Member Profile:

Several years ago, tennis boasted a female world number one in the person of Martina Hingis who was universally known as the ‘Swiss Miss’. Well here at Cooloola, we can boast our own Swiss Miss in the form of Carol Stadelmann.

Since moving to the Cooloola region six or so years ago with her husband Max, Carol has become a stalwart of the Cooloola Club. As regular as a Swiss watch, Carol attends all practice paddles and has not missed one regattas in which Cooloola competes for a very long time.

She also regularly volunteers to be a part of the team that runs the Dragon’s Lair Café for the Tin Can Bay monthly markets.

Last year, Carol was elected as treasurer, a role in which she has proved to be an extremely efficient operator. She has said that she is happy to stay in the role for at least another year if she is voted into the office again at this year’s Annual General Meeting (more on the AGM next month).

She is also an extremely active member of the team that helps to stage Cooloola’s own regatta each year. It has become such a tradition

that Carol organises the raffle prizes for the regatta that she is often known by the nickname ‘Raffle Queen’.

She is also on hand at the raffle stall to sell the tickets to both guest clubs and the public. There are always some fantastic raffle prizes on offer.

As another tangent to her life, Carol studied homeopathy at the prestigious School of Homeopathy in England. Nowadays, as a fullyqualified Homeopathic Practitioner, Carol treats her patients from her home clinic in Tin Can Bay.

Before coming to live permanently in Australia, Carol and Max took a vacation from Switzerland to see what our wonderful country was all about. During that holiday, they fell in love with Australia and have now been ‘Aussies’ for many years.

If you spoke to Carol, you would be hard put to discover any part of her original Swiss accent. She speaks perfect colloquial Australian English. It might also be noted that she is multilingual, speaking French, German and Italian as well as her native Swiss.

Carol has a fabulous and generous personality and is always a great competitor. We all hope that she long remains our friend and member of the Cooloola Dragon Boat Club.

Check out our new wheels! Our skiff takes a ride on its wonderfully crafted aluminium

Skiff Rolling Towards Launch

The Skiff is getting mobile

While our team of boat-builders has been hard at work preparing the inside of the skiff for painting and installing the gunwales, Walt from Universal Dynamics has been fabricating the aluminium trolley.

And what a wonderful piece of craftsmanship it is! A lot of thought and attention to detail have gone into this, as you can see.

The next steps in the boat shed are installing cross beams and thwarts (seats), together with the stretchers (foot rests) that the rowers will brace their feet against.

Name the Skiff competition is still open

We’ve had some really good thoughtful suggestions for a suitable name but the competition will remain open until Christmas. Names sensitive to the history, ecology, or indigenous culture of our area will be given priority.

Entries, in good taste only, should be submitted by email to tcbcoastalrowing@gmail.com with ‘Naming the Skiff’ in the subject line.

The winning entrant will be awarded free membership of TCB Coastal Rowing Club for a year.

New Membership

We are actively recruiting new members and from December, fees will be pro rata for the remainder of our membership year to the end of August.

Skiff rowing is for all ages, particularly those who may have considered their sporting days behind them. The skiffs may be used multiple times each week, catering for a wide range of interests and rowing activities. Prior rowing experience is not necessary and we will be forming crews of many ages and abilities. A few members rowed while at school; many others are about to take up an oar for the first time.

And if you’ve watched with interest our progress in building this skiff and thought you might like to be part of that activity, we will be commencing to build a second skiff in the New Year. Sign up to join the team! Email tcbcoastalrowing@gmail.com to receive a membership application form by return.

We’ve been working hard on getting the inside of the skiff ready for painting and installing gunwales.

Tin Can Bay Fishing Club

HELLO THERE. Here we are in December and soon we’ll be welcoming the big fella in the red suit so it makes you wonder where the time has gone. Anyway, our local fishing club has been doing what it does best and getting out enjoying the region’s pristine waterways.

This month we saw our ‘Cod Whisperer’ Ron Cox boat a cracker 88cm Cod from inside the bay which also was recognised as the fish of the month at our awards day. Great job Ron.

We also saw the return of our junior

fisherman for the month award which was presented to young Howard Rippon with his Trevally. The monthly four-day event was run and won by Barry Nalder with his best four fish being Flathead and Bream, all lure caught and released.

At our awards day, we again ran our Master Caster competition, and this was also won by Ron Cox with Marquis Chapman and Selwyn Potter nipping at his heels. A close contest but only one winner so well done Ron. Special thanks goes to our BBQ chef Jeff Prout and his lovely wife Elaine for catering, this is always enjoyed by the masses.

The club held two beach fishing

days, one at Norman Point in Tin Can Bay and the other was over at Teewah Beach. There were quite a lot of fish caught however not too many were to size so they swam away. Some notable exceptions were Bream and Flathead at Norman Point and some pretty reasonable size Whiting and Jew from Teewah.

– QUEENSLAND

The Flathead are quieting down a bit as are the Mangrove Jack but still out there if you work for them. Unfortunately, in some places all we seem to feed this time of year are Sharks, Toads and Grinners (or is it just me).

Unfortunately, undersized Dart were a real pain but that’s fishing. The days were very enjoyable, and the weather held out and days like these remind us why we live here.

Early in November we held the Club’s Annual General meeting with the election of officers for the ensuing term so with fresh ideas and fresh enthusiasm, things are looking good for our club so if this is your club come along and have a go.

Weigh In!

WThe club Christmas party was held at the Tin Can Bay Country Club on 23 November and a full list of winners and some pictures will be published in the next article.

Our new trip coordinator is compiling a 12 month calendar of events in order to let everybody know well in advance so as to prepare for these days. As well, the Workshop Coordinator is doing a similar agenda so presenters have plenty of time to prepare their content and attendees can prepare questions etc.

I know, with the interest of previous events improving, we are all looking forward to next year’s events and workshops.

That’s about it for this month, short and sweet but sincere.

ELL THAT is the 2024 competition season done and dusted!

Once again the variety of fish species presented at this month’s weigh-in was amazing. With some intriguing catches such as a 1,050 mm Barracuda caught off Teewah Beach by John Hollingworth, an interesting weigh-in to say the least.

Conditions for inshore and offshore fishing were great despite some early storms about on the Saturday morning, once those fronts had moved through it glassed out and particularly the Straits were mill pond flat. The quality of fish presented was once again extremely high.

Tin Can Bay P-10 State School

Year 10s celebrate their final parade

THE YEAR 10 students at Tin Can Bay School were given a heartfelt farewell at their final parade on Monday 18 November. The event marked the end of an era for four students – Bryce Bath, Tahnee Mallo, Kobi Watson, and Malakai Kissier – who have completed all their schooling at Tin Can Bay.

Principal Mr. Daman Weir addressed the audience, delivering an inspiring speech that celebrated the students’ achievements and encouraged them to embrace the future with confidence. This was followed by a speech from current Year 10 School Leader, Diesel.

A slideshow featuring photos of the students throughout their school years brought smiles and fond memories. The ceremony concluded with a touching guard of honour, where staff and fellow students lined the pathway, cheering as the Year 10 cohort walked through one last time. After the formalities, students and their families gathered for a morning

ThinkUKnow

Program empowers Tin Can Bay students to stay safe online

IN EARLY November Tin Can Bay P-10 State School hosted the ThinkUKnow Australia program, a national initiative led by the Australian Federal Police (AFP). This educational program, run in partnership with police and industry experts, focuses on preventing online child sexual exploitation through evidencebased sessions.

All classes from Prep to Year 10 participated, with each session tailored to tackle age-specific online challenges. Over 45 minutes, students learned valuable skills to stay safe in the digital world, informed by up-to-date research and real cases provided by the AFP-led Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation.

The day wrapped up with an after-school session for parents, ensuring the entire school community is equipped with the tools to support safe online interactions for young people. Thank you to ThinkUKnow and the AFP for empowering our students and families to navigate the online world safely.

tea, providing an opportunity to share memories and celebrate together. It was a fitting end to a memorable chapter for Tin Can Bay School’s Class of 2024.

Silversmithing Workshop

On Monday 21 October, we had the very talented Kaz from Birdsong Silver Studio run two half-day workshops for keen and interested students. Following the guidance of Kaz, the students used a variety of tools and equipment to create a sterling silver ring.

To create their individual ring the students had to follow a process requiring the use of a variety of specific techniques. Firstly, they selected a piece of silver, similar to a split ring, that was a size suitable for their finger.

Then they had to solder the join of their piece of silver, file off all excess solder, shape the silver ring into a circle, hammer the ring to give it a beautiful texture and also cause the silver to stretch making it the perfect size for each student’s finger. Lastly the rings were polished so we could all enjoy their creations.

The students had the opportunity to discuss their curiosities around working as a silversmith artist, including how and why Kaz became a silversmith and her favourite creation. All students who participated in the

FOR THREE weeks, students from Prep to Year 6 at Tin Can Bay School will dive into an exciting learning opportunity: water familiarisation classes held at the Rainbow Beach pool. This valuable program helps children gain essential water safety skills, build confidence, and improve swimming techniques—all while having fun with classmates.

Each session, guided by qualified instructors, introduces children to safe practices around water, focusing on essential skills like floating, kicking, and basic swimming strokes. The emphasis is not just on developing strong swimmers but also on teaching students the importance of water safety.

The program is an important initiative for Tin Can Bay School, helping to improve swimming ability and water safety awareness— crucial skills for life near the coast. Many students are already showing increased confidence. Here’s to a fantastic, safe summer ahead in the water!

workshops thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

We are looking forward to further opportunities like this for our students to embrace their curiosity and participate in new learning experiences, something that the school can offer to our students that is not able to be done every day.

A very big thank you to all involved for making this possible for our extremely grateful students.

Council Corner

Summer Safety

As we move into the summer months, now is the time to prepare your household and families for Queensland’s wet weather season.

Council has this month launched its Summer Safety disaster preparedness campaign, which is about helping residents to make simple, yet effective plans – should severe weather strike in the community.

This year’s campaign provides residents and visitors with practical tips and resources to prepare for extreme weather events, including storms, floods, and bushfires, which is all available on the Summer Safety page of Council’s website.

A key focus of this year’s campaign is community collaboration, with local leaders and key members of the Gympie region stepping up as ambassadors to help spread the important message of disaster preparedness.

Residents are also encouraged to check out Council’s online Disaster Dashboard which provides live, up-to-date information and warnings about weather events, bushfires, road closures, flood mapping, and power outages.

You can also opt in to receive weather alerts directly to your phone and email.

Christmas in Gympie Region

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas across the region, and Council is supporting a range of local community-driven events bringing festive cheer to Rainbow Beach and the wider region.

To help you ‘unwrap’ all of the festive fun, check out Council’s website for a full list of all the Christmas events happening in your community. Community events are a fantastic opportunity to come together, celebrate, and connect with neighbours, colleagues and friends.

These events wouldn’t be possible without the tireless efforts of the organisers and volunteers who make these events successful, and we are delighted to support your hard work.

If you are planning a local event and it’s not already listed on our website schedule, please email editorial@gympie.qld.gov.au with the key details for your event and contact details for the organisers. There are so many great community initiatives taking place across December, and we’re keen to help spread the news.

SPS C1 Upgrades

The old C1 pump station at Cooloola Cove is finally being replaced by a new FRP prefabricated pump station with an emergency storage tank. The installation has commenced and should be online prior to Christmas.

Kurana St Water Main Upgrade

The replacement of the old AC water main on Kurana St and Dulkara Ct is now complete with the local residents connected to a new PVC DN150mm pipe. The old main was considerably degraded and prone to pipe bursts with massive inconvenience to both residents and Council’s own repair crews.

The new line now means the Pressure Reduction Zone for Rainbow Beach can be extended to include this area, further increasing the life span of the water main infrastructure in the area.

Council Christmas Closures

As the year draws to a close, Council would like to advise of our facilities closures for the Christmas and New Year period.

All Council offices will be closed from 12pm Tuesday, 24 December 2024 and will reopen Thursday 2 January 2025.

Rainbow Beach Library will be closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day only.

All waste facilities will be closed Christmas Day only. Kerbside collection of waste and recyclables will operate as normal.

Chappy CHAT

Rainbow Beach Learning Community

Learning Community families have had a great Term 4 focusing on travelling the world, featuring a different country each week with information on flags, food, animals, language, currency, anthems, games, dress, culture, and dance provided by parents and members of the community.

Locals sharing about their birth countries have included Susanna from Samoa who served traditional delicacies such as mango, coconut, and pawpaw and a dessert made of tapioca beads and banana; Anne from Germany who helped the children make traditional pasta; Steve from Ukraine, and still to come, sharing by locals about their birth countries of Africa and Switzerland.

Each child is compiling a world scrapbook which is used to create pages for each country where they can save information and relevant pictures.

Curtis from the Gympie Library paid a visit during November and the children had great fun with the technology he brought with him.

The end of year breakup will be happening on Tuesday 10 December at Tin Can Bay and we are hoping that the children will have the opportunity to go fishing off a barge and kayaking in the inlet.

Beach & Bay Community Pantry

The Beach & Bay Community Pantry recently received notification from Gympie Council regarding their application for a $5,000 Council grant which will assist in the creation of a community garden at Federation Park in Mauretania Avenue, Cooloola Cove.

Local charity Pindari Life is the organisation that oversees the Community Pantry’s finances and insurance and its Directors, Alfie & Gillian Berliner, are thrilled that the application to Council was successful.

Pindari Life supports young people and their families to discover purpose and value by providing programs and activities for school students as well as children who are being homeschooled or are disengaged

from mainstream education. Their programs include camping and outdoor adventure, bush survival and bush preservation activities.

The Community Pantry provides an avenue for the organisation to assist families affected by poverty or disability and support the local school through a weekly Breakfast Club. They are in the process of developing services for accessible all-abilities adventure activities facilitating inclusion regardless of mental, physical, or social disabilities in partnership with other organisations.

The Community Garden at Federation Park in Mauretania Avenue, Cooloola Cove will provide veggies for local families and encourage them through regular workshops to become more self-sufficient by creating their own gardens.

Gympie Regional Council has approved the lease of a 15x20 metre patch of land and shed to the Community Pantry under the umbrella of Pindari Life for the next three years and it is hoped that initial work on the garden site will commence in mid-February.

Interested locals will have the opportunity to attend a meeting facilitated by Council in early February where they can share their ideas and vision for the garden. The grant will provide funds to purchase raised modular garden beds, soil, mulch, tools, irrigation, and seeds, using the shed as an operations base.

The Community Pantry’s $10 fortnightly hampers are continuing to be popular for around 100 single clients and families and consist of pantry items and frozen meals from Foodbank, fresh fruit and veggies from Mitchell’s Gympie and Mahaffey Farm at Goomboorian and donations from Aldi in Gympie and local supermarkets.

Hampers are available from the Rainbow Beach Community Centre and Cooloola Cove Vet’s Hall on alternate Thursdays and if you would like to order one, please text your name to 0413 135 867.

A free Christmas lunch is being held on 19 December 2024 at the Cooloola Cove Vet’s Hall from 11am to 12.30pm, coinciding with the last hamper day for the year.

A delicious two-course meal will be prepared and served by Community Pantry volunteers and local musicians Tin Can Jam will provide a wonderful selection of songs to enjoy during the meal so come along and meet other locals who may become friends.

To book your seat please text 0413 135 867 early as seats are limited.

The children are enjoying compiling their world scrapbooks.

Children enjoyed a visit from Curtis from the Gympie Library and his technology.
