is back!
AINBOW BEACH Community Centre will once again host the Festival of Small Halls Tour. Mark 19 July in your diaries, tell your friends, grab a ticket and get ready for an intimate evening that will truly warm your soul. Refreshments and soup to warm your hands will be available from 6pm. Doors open at 6.30pm with a 7pm (sharp) start. Touring the Queensland coast this winter is Australian folk artist Hailey Calvert and Canadian duo Quote The Raven. Quote The Raven, consisting of Jordan Coaker and Kirsten Rodden-Clarke, have been performing together for over a decade. The Canadian East Coast Music Award winning duo are currently working on their third studio album, building on the success of the acclaimed records “Can’t Hold the Light” and “Golden Hour”. As a three-time Musical NL (Newfoundland and Labrador) Group of the Year, Quote The Raven seamlessly merge Americana-
Folk Music with East Coast storytelling, sharing tales of a small-town touring band experiencing the world.
Above: Quote The Raven Below: Hailey Calvert
Hailey Calvert’s voice is never the one people expect to hear when she starts to sing, giving her the element of surprise early on in her performances. It’s that strong, breathtaking voice and achingly honest folk tunes that makes each audience member feel like they are the only people in the room to hear her stories. Those same song writing skills saw Hailey take out the Blues Category in the 2015 International Songwriting Competition with her song ‘I Won’t Forget About You’. Hailey says, “I’m so excited to get to perform for lovely audiences in little towns you usually might not get to stop in on tour. Every time I drive through a small town I see the most amazing potential venues and am thrilled to get to play in them this time!” We can’t wait to see you!

HQP Fraser Coast Plantation
Community Day HQ
PLANTATIONS IS hosting a Community Day on Saturday 20 July so the local community can see what it takes to grow a sustainable forest. HQP’s pine plantations on the Fraser Coast, which extend from Maryborough to Kin Kin and Gympie to the coast, are among the biggest in the southern hemisphere and supply most of Queensland’s structural timber. Local houses are built from renewable timber that’s grown here and milled here on our doorstep. Houses really do grow on trees and right now HQP is growing the trees local kids, and their kids, will build their homes from. Growing for generations supports a thriving economy of large and small local businesses and their employees including sawmills, civil construction, hauliers, harvesters, scientists, foresters, fire fighters, nursery workers and labourers - even helicopter pilots and drone operators. This work is mostly done quietly and unseen, but on Saturday 20 July, with help from HQP’s industry and community partners, they’re putting it all on display from 9am to 2pm at the Toolara Forest Office on Tin Can Bay Road and they’re inviting the whole Gympie and Fraser Coast community. Visitors will see every aspect of the plantation lifecycle and some of the machines and technology used from seedling to sawmill on display from HQP and:
n Wood processors and major employers Hyne Timber and Laminex n Harvest and hauliers Sunchip, Ashers and GMT Logging n Roading construction contractors including McKenna’s n Silviculture operators who undertake planting and maintenance such as K&S Contracting, Crossing Works, Butchulla Indigenous Industries Group and Wide Bay Drones n Other suppliers including EXCI artificial intelligence fire detection n Local First Nations groups Kabi Kabi Peoples Aboriginal Corporation and Butchulla Native Title Aboriginal Corporation, the traditional custodians n Community and environment partners including local rural fire brigades, Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee, Gympie Landcare, Glenwood Wildlife Awareness, and Cooloola Nature.
Visit HQP’s website www.hqplantations.com.au/ communityday for more information. When: Saturday 20 July, 9am-2pm Where: HQPlantations Toolara Office 2747 Tin Can Bay Road 30 mins from Rainbow Beach 15 mins from Tin Can Bay Right: ForestLearning’s Forest VR headsets will put adults and kids in the picture. Below: See all aspects of the plantation lifecycle from seedling to sawmill.
Find out fun facts like how long it takes to grow a pine tree and how many seedlings are grown each year at the Toolara nursery. People can also talk to HQP about harvest plans, environmental and cultural heritage management, and fire protection. They’ll even have fire tankers and light attack vehicles on display. There will also be goody bags, prizes, Rotary sausage sizzle, food trucks, and a coffee and juice cart. It’s going to be huge but it won’t be a Community Day without YOU!

A smooth ride for all:
The case for upgrading Rainbow Beach Skatepark
Elisa Seul
ELISA: PEOPLE, PLACES, STORIES
O
NE PLACE THAT showcases our active, outdoorloving lifestyle is the skatepark in Lawrie Hanson Park. This concrete playground is where our kids—and let’s admit it, many of us adults too— develop their skills when the surf’s not ideal. But let’s cut to the chase: the skatepark’s condition leaves much to be desired. The rough concrete has become notorious for its kneescraping, elbow-grazing ways. Our local skaters deserve a smoother, safer ride. So, the big question is, how much longer do we have to wait for the overdue upgrade? Skateboarding is an excellent form of exercise. It improves balance, coordination, and cardiovascular health. It’s an all-body workout that’s as fun as it is challenging. The skatepark is also a social hub. We know the Gympie Regional Council has its hands full, but it’s time for our skatepark to get the attention it deserves. It’s not just about avoiding scrapes and bruises; it’s about creating a safe, supportive environment for our community to thrive.
WHAT CAN WE DO? Here’s how we can make a difference: - Voice Your Concerns: Attend council meetings, write letters, and speak up about the need for upgrades. The more voices, the harder we are to ignore. - Get Involved: Join local initiatives aimed at improving our recreational facilities. Show up, volunteer, and make your presence felt.
WE ARE HIRING
- Stay Positive and Persistent: Change takes time, but with persistent effort, we can create the skatepark our community deserves. Let’s band together and make our voices heard. Rainbow Beach deserves a top-notch facility to practise this passion. Let’s give the kids a skatepark that’s not just functional, but fantastic. Roll on, Rainbow Beach! Dear Gympie Council, We are writing to you today to discuss the Rainbow Beach Skatepark. It seriously needs an upgrade because it has been vandalised, it has a dangerous and rough surface and there is no area for us to improve our skills. Firstly, the skatepark has been vandalised and needs to be removed. There are inappropriate drawings and swear words sprayed all over the place. Children see these unacceptable drawings and words and will repeat them because they think it is okay. You must remove the vandalism so the skatepark is an enjoyable and safe place! Secondly, it has a dangerous and rough surface. It has deep potholes and tiny, sharp rocks scattered everywhere. Children are grazing their knees and elbows and breaking bones. Obviously, you need to upgrade the skatepark so this stops happening. Finally, the skatepark is boring and there is no area for us to improve our skills. Why are all the other towns getting new and improved skateparks yet Rainbow’s hasn’t changed since it was built
over 50 years ago? There is only one ramp, three tiny hills and a short rail. Clearly, the Rainbow Beach Skatepark needs bigger and better equipment so we can develop our skills. The Rainbow Beach Skatepark definitely needs to be upgraded because it has been vandalised, has a dangerous surface and there is no area to improve our skills. Kind regards, Rainbow Beach State School Year 2 and 3 students.

Golden Evening from Heart of Gold
L
OCAL RESIDENTS enjoyed a night of live music and international short films when Heart of Gold Film Festival staged their Golden Evening in the hall on 15 June. Soul Tree Union got the show off to a lively start with their melodic original compositions and imaginative covers. Patrons were then treated to a smorgasbord of Australian and international short films, just a
sample of what they can expect from Heart of Gold’s 2024 Film Festival later in the year. The sound in the hall is so much better with the noise-reducing curtains and new speakers that were given a test drive by our volunteer AV guru Peter Hall. Thanks, Peter. The hall glittered at the recent Golden Evening from Heart of Gold.

Our CoolaFlix free film night for July will feature the 2012 remake of The Lorax, a very timely cautionary tale based on the classic book by Dr Seuss. The host group will be the Cooloola chapter of the National Register of Big Trees project, auspiced by Cooloola Coastcare. There will be $5 hot dogs (both meat and vegetarian types, includes toppings onions, cheese, sauce, pickles, etc). Of course, there will be popcorn too! Beer and wine (red/ white/bubbly) will be available, as well as soft drinks, poppers and water. All proceeds go to the Big Trees project. Doors open at 5pm, film screens at

We are very proud of the success of the CoolaFlix project in getting locals together, using the hall, offering affordable family-friendly events, and promoting local groups and their projects. The recent Year 2/3/4 Camp included an excursion to the Sand Blow and an interesting talk from National Parks.
A
T THE END OF WEEK 7 last term, Year 2/3/4 had an excursion which took them on a walk to Carlo Sandblow before heading to The Deck for lunch. At the Sandblow, we were met by one of our local National Park Rangers where the students learnt many fun facts about how the Sandblow was formed and some history of our local area. After lunch the students had some free time at the park before returning to school to set up camp. The evening was filled with Mr Bennett’s special spaghetti bolognaise for dinner, team building activities, stargazing, and was wrapped up with a movie. The children had an amazing time and showed much resilience considering for most this was their first school camp. Big thanks to The Deck for lunch and to National Parks for meeting us at
the Sandblow. The annual Rainbow Beach Fishing Classic also took to the town this term and in support of ‘Kids Day’ the entire school ventured down to Inskip Point for our Annual School Fishing Day. It was an absolutely stunning day at the beach and there were a few fish caught too. This activity is a great opportunity to celebrate the unique place we live in while teaching students about the importance of protecting our waterways into the future. We were able to inform students about size limits, bag limits and common species found within the Sandy Straits. A big thank you to all the parents who were available to assist on the day! As the term has drawn to an end, we are excited to have OSHC Vacation Care Program open to all school aged
Our recent Annual School Fishing Day coincided with Fishing Classic and was an absolutely brilliant day all round!
children during these school holidays. There are many fun activities planned including lawn bowls, icy pole, pancake and sushi making, wool craft activities, BYO wheels, and sausage sizzles along with sporting activities and nature adventures. Vacation Care will be open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8am – 4pm both weeks of the school holidays. Spaces are limited so if you would like to enrol your child, you can contact us directly on 0480 501 870 or email oshcrainbowbeach@ gmail.com. Alternatively, you can enrol online, the link is also on our P&C Facebook page. We have exciting fundraising events planned for later in the year, one of which is an 80’s themed Trivia Night! Leave the kids at home with Nan and
Pop – this one is just for the adults! There’ll be trivia, raffles and lots of chances to win! Get a group together and test your knowledge. Dust off the lycra leotard, there’s an 80’s theme and best dressed team wins! Buy a table (seats 6) or purchase a single double and we’ll pair you up if you like! Tickets are available at https://www.trybooking.com/CSVDY for $30pp or $150 for a table of 6. The price includes entry to the quiz, finger food platter and a free beer, wine or soft drink on arrival. The bar will also be open for a coldie or a snack. All money raised goes back to our little school for our kids! NOTHER BUSY MONTH for the Tin Can Bay Quilters Club. With a bus trip at the end of May for 23 ladies where we all spent far too much money (don’t tell anyone it’s our secret). I’m certain lots of new and wonderful projects will be completed in due course from our purchases. We went to Howard, Hervey Bay, and Maryborough all in one day on a big bus with room for ALL the bags. We have also had a beginner’s class which was a great success and spurred us all on to try something new. And if that wasn’t enough, we also had our long Tuesday where we can sew most of the day – well up to 2pm anyway, and have lunch together.
A picturesque spot to inspire Cooloola Coast Art Group members.

There are several local venues to visit for the Gympie Studio Trail which is held on the same weekend as the show – 6-7 July. Information can be found on the Gympie Regional Gallery website and runs at different areas on different weekends. “Gympie Region Studio Trails is an annual initiative of Gympie Regional Gallery that invites visual
artists, artisans, heritage workers and designers to open their studio doors and share their passions.” (GRG) Last month the art group was busy preparing and critiquing artwork for the show as well as holding weekly get-togethers of plein air, life drawing, and group activities at Tuncunba Hall. One of the activities was to use mark-making inspired by Vincent Van Gogh to create our own landscapes which proves helpful when drawing from nature en plein air. If you would like to join in these activities, you are very welcome so either email cooloolacoastartgroup@ gmail.com or phone Kerri on 0438 803 990. You can also check out the activities and photos on our Instagram page @cooloolacoastartgroup.

Sharing the joy of Singing Jackie James
A
N APPRECIATIVE audience assembled at Residency by Dillons once more when the Coolabay Choir dropped in to entertain the residents in June. The choir performed some choral numbers with lovely harmonies and a couple of ‘golden oldies’. Residents were also able to join in a sing-along with some well-known hits from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, thanks to a
songbook provided by the choir. The voices rang out to everything from Elvis’ Love Me Tender to Paul McCartney’s Mull of Kintyre, and the smiles were beaming. The visit was much enjoyed by residents and choir members alike, and we hope to be invited back in September. Coolabay Choir is a non-auditioned community choir, open to all. We are keen to welcome new members – and no prior experience or ability to read music is required! The choir has
a broad repertoire, covering a range of songs and genres. Come along and discover the joy of singing! Coolabay Choir meets for an hour on Wednesdays at 3pm in the Cooloola Cove Veterans and Community Hall (behind Woolies). For more information, please contact Pam Graham on 0427 180 649 or Jackie James on 0438 768 855. Choir member Jackie James with the songbook provided for the sing-along.
Rainbow Beach DroughtRunners Report Tony Stewart
T
HIS LAST MONTH has been quiet, as we luckily have avoided any disasters once again, but as we head towards spring the country is really drying out. Let’s hope the authorities have their Fire Mitigation Plans to the fore. We didn’t do the June Rainbow Beach Markets, but have sold a few things privately, and topped up our finances with $80 in donations from the Tin Can Bay Bakery and about $500 from bottle and collections. Many thanks to Wayne Kerle for his work in picking up from our bins at 10 Tingira Close, Rainbow Beach and in Tin Can Bay. Thankyou to all the regulars who have again kept filling our bins on a weekly basis. Thank you to Mary Mcilroy who dropped in some wonderful items for children that will be going to Maryvale School near Warwick. The accompanying photo was sent to me by the Longreach School of Distance Education of a young chap playing with a toy made by Bill Neale Regan from Longreach with a mower made by Bill Neale of Tin Can Bay.

of Tin Can Bay for the DroughtRunners. We have been supporting them for eight years and have sent thousands of dollars their way as they have really had some tough times. Thank you all who have helped.
Rainbow Beach Book
The Making Of Rainbow Beach History book continues to sell well. The book had many wonderful contributors, but sadly we lost one of those this month with the passing of the much loved ex-Headmistress of the Rainbow Beach State School in Heather Robertson. Heather was rather reluctant to give me a story or two, but finally we were very fortunate to have her relive a few tales and some funny times of her era. This is why we need to do Part 2, or much history will be lost forever. Books are available at the Rainbow Beach Tourist Info Centre, the Rainbow Beach Post Office, The Shell Tourist centre, and other shops and resorts. In Tin Can Bay they are available at the newsagency, Post Office, and the Holiday Park. Or call me, Tony Stewart, on 0408 767 930.

Walk for Health Maggie Travers WALK ORGANISER
W
ELCOME TO OUR newest member, Betsy, who is committed to becoming fitter by walking in both our ‘One Step at a Time Tin Can Bay’ and our ‘Cooloola Cove Wheelie Walkers’ Heart Foundation walking groups. Both groups Walk, Talk and Coffee two mornings each week, weather permitting, although we even walk in the rain occasionally. Congratulations to Linda Cox for achieving the second award and discount voucher for the online shop, for completing your 50th walk. Well done. Congratulations Linda Fewtrell and Sandy Stevenson and welcome to our Team of Walk Organisers for both groups. It’s great to ‘share the load’ with such bright, cheerful, energetic and caring people. Thanks Sandy and Linda. Our very sad news is that our long-term member, Albert McAlister passed away on 9 June. We celebrated his 80th birthday last September, springing a surprise “best birthday ever” party at the Country Club. ‘Prince’ Albert loved walking, then wheelie walking, talking and socialising with his ‘harem’. Albert, Val and their two dogs faithfully participated in our CCWWalkers’ Boardwalk and BYO Picnic Morning Tea at Norman Point on the last Friday of each month. Friday

Tina, Verna, new member Betsy, and Gayle congratulate new Walk Organiser Linda Fewtrell.
28 June’s Tin Can Bay Boardwalk and Morning Tea was especially a Celebration of the Life of cheeky, cheery, kind, dapper Albert McAlister. RIP Albert, we miss you, your lovely smile and your stories. TCB early Heart Foundation Walking group departs from the Tin Can Bay Bakery at 7am, Wednesdays and Saturdays, and the later group half an hour later at 7.30am during winter. CCWWalkers meet by 8.15am at the Cooloola Cove Shopping Centre Bus shelter on Nautilus Drive Mondays and Fridays. Walk Yourself Happy! Why don’t you join us? It’s free, fun and a great way to improve our physical, mental, social and emotional health. Queries? Contact Judy Beaton 5486 2181 or myself, Maggie Travers on 0400 756 615.
I
SPOT KEV Worthey walking through the Tin Can Bay RSL doors, apron on and a pair of tongs in his hand. “Hey Kevvie”, I sing out, “What’s the menu for the Christmas in July event again?” He looks at me like I’m half demented, “Roscoe, I told you yesterday - dinner roll, pork, beef and chicken on the spit, seasonal veggies, and sweets.” I grin at him. “Oh yeah, that’s right.” Kevin Worthey first enlisted in the Australian Army in 1972 and did his recruit and initial employment training at Kapooka. He was then posted to 1RAR in Townsville where he served as an infantry soldier until 1976, reaching the rank of Corporal. He reenlisted in the Army in 1981 and it was back to Kapooka when he trained under the watchful eye of Don Holland, now President of Tin Can Bay RSL Sub Branch. Kev ran into a number of his former army mates who were serving as instructors at Kapooka at the time and it wasn’t long before he was ‘upsquadded’ to the last week, declaring there wasn’t anything more
this bugger could be trained in! Kev was then posted to the Army Catering Corps at Puckapunyal where he learnt the catering trade, and then to Enoggera and Albury Wodonga where he served until he left the Australian Army in 1989 at the rank of Corporal. Kev ’s cooking skills soon became common knowledge around Albury Wodonga after he started his own mobile catering business running hangis and spits around the district. He then went to Cairns where he started work at Power Brewing and soon became Executive Chef at their well-known taverns where he worked for 3 years. During his time in Cairns he married his long suffering wife Lyn, now one of the tyros of the Cooloola Dragon Boat club. After then moving to various landscaping and concrete truck businesses Kev finally retired in Coolum and soon became Vice President of the Coolum RSL. He moved to Tin Can Bay permanently in 2021 and is now Vice President of the Tin Can Bay RSL. He thoroughly enjoys getting back into cooking and is heavily involved in manning the Sunday BBQs and providing chef expertise for our events such as ‘Howling at the Moon’ and ‘Christmas in July’. Well, we enjoy having you around and using your expertise Kevvie – thank you for your service!

Wide Bay Series:
Following on from the State Dragon Boat Championships in March, the Wide Bay Series kicked off with the Bundaberg Regatta in May followed recently by Hervey Bay Regatta in early June.
Although the Cooloola team brought home a host of medals from the State Championships and despite a vigorous training regime they have not yet managed to bring back any ‘bling’ from the first two regattas in the Wide Bay Series. They have been close to the frontrunners but have not had the luck to take away a major win.
We are all hoping their luck will take a turn for the better at our home regatta early in July.

Yes, it is that time of year again! The annual Cooloola Dragon Boat Club Regatta will take place over the weekend of 6-7 July. Teams are expected to come from many of the

coastal centres, from the Gold Coast to as far north as Mackay.
There will be two days of competition and hi-jinx as the teams take to the water for two days of racing as well as the traditional team fancy dress and, this year for the first time, a team air guitar competition. And, of course, Saturday’s racing will also feature Cooloola’s own Diamond Dash for Cash which is a must-see for spectators. As well as the spectacle of the Dragon Boats competing, there will also be lots of other things for spectators and visitors to do and see. There are many raffle prizes to be won and there will be plenty of tasty food and drinks to be had. As the regatta becomes bigger and better, it has attracted some wonderful local sponsors. These include Tin Can Bay Marina Villas, Elders Real Estate, Clare Real Estate, Nudicover (protect against midges and sun), Sails Restaurant, Tin Can Bay IGA, First National Real Estate, Mitre 10, Nestle,
Cooloola Coast Furniture and Bedding, Tin Can Bay Chandlery, Tin Can Bay Fruit and Veg, and DNJ Constructions.
It is good to see that these local concerns are ready to support the event. Cooloola Dragon Boat Club offers its heartiest thanks to all our sponsors and supporters! We also thank our own club members who have made many donations for the raffles and generously given their time to get things running smoothly!
So, please take the time to come down to the Tin Can Bay Yacht Club and enjoy a family day of fun in the sun, competition and lots of great music — you won’t regret it and may even go home with a fabulous raffle prize drawn Sunday afternoon at the conclusion of all events. We Have the Fire!!!
If you are unable to make the monthly catch up, please contact Cr Jess Milne to make an alternative arrangement.

Tin Can Bay Fishing Club Report Barry Nalder
G
’DAY ALL. Finally some lovely weather and along with it some cracking days on the water enjoyed by the fishing fraternity in general. Our club held its monthly two-day fishing competition and although there weren’t too many entrants, there were some truly memorable catches. Long time club member Ron Cox submitted two superb Venus Tusk Fish with the best coming in at 71cm, a true ‘donkey’ if ever there was one. Final results of this two-day competition
were Ron Cox in first place with 617.8 points and the runner up was Clinton Croft with 462.7. The fish of the month was hotly contested with forty-four fish being submitted and this month the competition also was won by Ron Cox with that lovely 71cm Venus Tusk Fish. In second place was Chris Rippon with his 96cm Cobia and in third place Ron Cox with another 70cm Tusk Fish. Points are awarded on a species by species sliding scale not just the longest fish, with a 10% bonus if landed using a lure. Other catches

for the month have come in from Marquis Chapman with a couple of nice Flathead and Chris Rippon with a respectable 56cm Snapper, well done guys. Crabs are still on the march and our weighmaster Selwyn Potter submitted his last capture of mud crabs for our viewing enjoyment. Well done all. Our presentation day was held at the club house on the first Saturday of June where we also held our Master Caster competition. We had nine entrants and a couple of young members having a go as well and young Howard Rippon picked up an outfit and showed a few of us just how to do it (embarrassing on my part). This day belonged to Jeff Prout with a stellar performance and showing he has many more talents other than being just a great barbecue chef,

well done Jeff. This master caster event is a terrifically enjoyable way to hone our skills as far as accuracy and consistency in casting out a lure/ bait so as not to leave too many lures hanging on trees and as a sideline, it’s a ton of fun. We also held the next of our workshops focusing on improving ourselves and hence more successful days on the water by structuring our fishing trips looking at what, when, where and how to target specific species. Considering species targeted, time, tides, moon phases and tackle required.

Fishing, Boating & the Outdoors This was very well presented by Ron Cox and the ensuing interaction with the members present was also very enlightening. These workshops are proving very popular, and I can assure you that some very valuable insights were shared by those present right around the room. The next workshop will include but not limited to crabbing techniques, in particular tying crabs. Socially some of the members visited the Cooroy Brewery for lunch and a ‘ginger ale’ and from all reports the outing was enjoyed by all. Upcoming events include a three-day trip to Baffle Creek which will be held later in June and will be reported on in the next club report. Hopefully there will be plenty of photos to share. The club two-day competitions will now be held on the last Saturday/ Sunday of each month with the aim of allowing for more participation. As well we are looking into the possibility of more species-specific events such as squid days etc, watch this space. Well that’s about all from me for this month, the weather’s too good, I’m putting the boat in. Tight lines.

A massive THANK YOU has to go to AFAQ Amateur Fishermen’s Association of Queensland Inc. not only for their unbelievable hospitality in hosting round 1 of the interclub on Bribie Island, but for also organising this now two round competition in conjunction with RBAA. It is great to see two like-minded clubs getting together to make fishing educational and fun for their members. A great turn out of approximately 28 RBAA members made the journey down to compete against AFAQ Bribie, Caboolture River Fishing and Boating Club Inc, and Yandina Fishing Club. To say we had a blast is an understatement. The challenge of fishing unfamiliar waters made it all the more interesting. Bream, Whiting, Flathead, Snapper, Pearl Perch, Trevally, Yellow Tail King, Gold Spot Wrasse and Mackerel hit the weigh station as RBAA fishers looked on in anticipation. Offshore, the Yandina Fishing club fared well with some good Kings amongst their bag of fish, RBAA members Brendan and Brock Heal
Club legend Ollie Pearce with his Flathead.
nailed some great Gold Spot Wrasse while the Bribie boys had a mixed bag of Blue Parrot, Tusk fish and Snapper. They were all out done though with some lovely big Pearlies and Snapper from the RBAA crews searching for new ground. Congratulations to H Wilesmith and John Hooker for bringing home the offshore target species trophies. Continued next page

Winners of note were Best Dressed - Team Predator (Brock, Brendon, Darren, Vern, and Jeff) with runners up The Pirates (the Hamilton Family), and Vern Ezzy who was lucky enough to win the Wynnum Marine Boat Package. Thank you to the RBAA Crew, Brendon Heal, Dave Livick, John Telford, Don Reid, Michael Acton, Paul & Patty Glover, Lisa & Rich Lippross and Vern Ezzy who assisted with the weigh in during the week, and special mention to new Club Member Graham McCulloch who was the Pit Boss of the weigh ins for the week. RBAA also had the opportunity to sell raffle tickets at the Rainbow Beach Family Fishing Classic on the Monday night and a late call up on the Friday night due to a seller no show, thanks to Brock Heal, Jeff Twine, Vern Ezzy, and Stuart Peall for selling tickets. Congratulations to Ashleigh Jensen and the Team at the Rainbow Beach Sports Club for organising and hosting such a great event, be sure to note your calendar with the dates for next year’s event – 8-14 June 2025.

Tin Can Bay P-10 State School FANFARE OIn mid-May the Tin Can Bay P-10 State School Concert Band performed at the Education Queensland FANFARE competition in Gympie. They were one of only three bands performing in the highest division represented at the event, and they executed their performance admirably. Their hard work and consistency in the lead up to the performance set the group up to impress. Performing two pieces in front of a large audience, the Tin Can Bay students impressed the crowd with their precision and well-prepared repertoire. The Tin Can Bay P-10 State School Concert Band performing on stage at FANFARE.
For our beginner students, this was their first opportunity to perform with the band. Each and every student showed great courage and focus. The behaviour of the students was also commendable. Tin Can Bay students were professional whilst on stage, and courteous while in the audience. Well done to the instrumental music students. You are a credit to yourselves and your school.

Careers Expo In a bid to broaden the horizons of their young minds, the Year 5 students
experienced a day of discovery during their excursion to the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) Gympie Campus, for the yearly Careers Expo. Students participated in various interactive workshops, activities, and demonstrations planned throughout the day, with the aim of gaining a greater understanding of some of the career opportunities available to them. By far the most popular activity though, was the chance to meet and shake hands with, Gizmo the Robotic Dog. The students eagerly asked about university life and future careers. UniSC representatives emphasised the importance of lifelong learning and encouraged students to dream big. The Year 5’s thoroughly enjoyed the experience and came away a little more informed about career possibilities in their future. Right: The students enjoyed the chance to meet Gizmo at the Careers Expo.

Think Ahead
Rainbow Beach Portable Waste Dump Point
If you’re headed out camping, residents and visitors are reminded of the importance of using the portable waste dump point correctly. Disposing of sanitary items, disposable nappies, and toilet wipes will block the system. If you need to dispose of these items, bag them and take them home for disposal. With mandatory portable toilets required for camping at Pelican Bay and Dorrigo South camping areas, it’s more important than ever to ensure our dump points are functioning properly. Remember to only dump the ‘Three P’s – Pee, Poo, and Paper’.
Fees and Charges
On Wednesday 26 June, Council adopted the Fees and Charges schedule for the 2024-2025 financial year. These fees and charges are for services that Council provides that range from building and plumbing, environmental health, regulatory services, lands protection, waste management and planning application fees. These come into effect on 1 July 2024. For more information go to the Gympie Regional
Council is encouraging residents to ‘think ahead’ and take advantage of free resources and tools as part of a new community preparedness campaign launching this winter. The Think Ahead Gympie Region campaign highlights the importance of disaster preparedness for every household and encourages residents to take time outside of the traditional wet weather season to think about how prepared their family and household is for severe weather impacts. Taking the time to consider circumstances relevant to ourselves, our families, businesses, and households, means we can take the steps necessary to plan and prepare, reducing the potential risks associated with future flooding and severe weather events. Think Ahead Gympie Region encourages the community to forward plan and familiarise themselves with the available resources to be as prepared as possible and know where to find the information needed when it’s needed. Keep an eye out for ‘Think Ahead’ over coming months or visit Council’s website for more information.

Some of our donated pantry items ready to be included in our fortnightly hampers
Ronnie Timperon
Rainbow Beach Learning Community
Our focus on the well-loved book ‘The Secret Garden’ has continued in June at the Learning Community, finishing up in the last week of term with the children watching the movie on the big screen at the Community Centre which was a great treat. Lunch followed, including items from the book such as currant buns, muffins, roasted potatoes, eggs, ham, honey, marmalade on toast on the menu. Families were thrilled to spend time with Mo Riggs, our art tutor for the past two years, during an outdoor art session at Inskip Point while she was back in town working on a commission. This led to sketching live models during later sessions which was a new experience for many.
Family Guide to the Cooloola Coast – can you help with sponsoring the printing?
After researching existing brochures available for families visiting the area, it became glaringly apparent that there was nothing that concentrated on all of the fabulous attractions the Cooloola Coast has to offer. Learning Community families went to work and researched all of the activities and places they love so much and so the Family Guide for the Cooloola Coast was born. The guide is ready for printing and we are looking for local businesses to provide sponsorship to help with the cost of this which has been quoted at $1300 for 1,000 copies or $1.30 per guide, consisting of 8 pages of information, maps and beautiful photos. The Family Guide will be a great resource for families visiting our unique area and could be placed in each room of accommodation venues, handed out at local caravan parks and available on the counters of local businesses. If you would like to help us with printing costs by donating, please contact Ronnie on 0413 135 867.
Name change for Community Pantry
The Rainbow Beach Community Pantry has had a name change to Beach & Bay Community Pantry to better reflect the areas where our clients live. The fortnightly hampers consist of fruit and veggies from Mitchell’s Fruit & Veg in Gympie on one fortnight and pantry items on the other fortnight plus donations from supermarkets, Ed’s Beach Bakery and frozen meals from Foodbank. They are distributed from the Rainbow Beach Community Centre and the Cooloola Cove Vet’s Hall on Thursdays between 12.30 & 1.15pm. The cost is still only $10 per hamper.
Clients tell us how much they appreciate the hampers which are a great help as the price of food continues to rise. Some recent comments have been: “Amazing hampers, so helpful and appreciated,” and ‘There is no denying this is a great opportunity for people who are doing it tough – thank you so much for everything you do.” You can keep up with the distribution days by liking the What’s Going On? Cooloola Cove, Tin Can Bay, Gympie; Word’s Out Rainbow Beach and Beach & Bay Community Pantry Facebook pages where you will find regular updates.
Breakfast Club at Tin Can Bay School
The Community Pantry is delighted to be able to announce that it is starting Breakfast Club at Tin Can Bay School on Thursdays in Term 3, which has not been happening since Chappy Karen finished up. We would love to have locals help us by volunteering from 7-9am on Thursdays in the tuckshop and helping to serve porridge, baked beans or spaghetti on toast, toast with spreads, fruit juice and warm milo to students. If you would like to donate any of these food items, please drop them off to Andrea at the school office between 9am & 3pm. Volunteers will need to apply for a Blue Card (Working with Children check) which can be obtained free of charge, and complete the school’s volunteer application form. Please contact Ronnie on 0413 135 867 or email: ronnie.timperon@gmail.com if you are interested in helping.

Free Community Lunch
The Community Pantry would like to invite clients and local residents to the first free community lunch on Thursday 18 July from 11.30-1 at the Cooloola Cove Vet’s Hall. Enjoy a delicious 3-course lunch consisting of pumpkin soup, lasagna and salad and apple crumble and ice cream (vegan & gluten-free options are available upon request), soft drinks and tea or coffee. This is a great way to get out of the house and make new friends. Seats are limited so to book your place, please text 0413 135 867. If you have put your name down for a hamper, they will be available after lunch at 1.15pm. To order a hamper for yourself or someone who needs a helping hand, you can text to 0413 135 867 or hop onto the Beach & Bay Community Pantry Facebook page and send a message. CWA ARE ENJOYING the lovely winter days, the cold mornings are worth the day to come. Our Annual High Tea fundraiser for Cancer Council was a great success. Thank you to all who attended, and you all enjoyed yourselves, sorry to those we had to disappoint as it was a very popular event. A huge thank you to all that donated prizes for our raffles, high tea cakes and slices, and Joan’s sausage rolls. And our op shop for the donation of teaspoons. We thank you all for making the day a success, our donation to the Biggest Morning Tea Cancer Council has been banked and QCWA received a thank you letter back. We said goodbye to our members Brenda and hubby who are hitting the road to become grey nomads. All the best to you both and we will miss you and your knitted items for the hospitals, but are still donating teddies to hospitals on your trip. The Branch presented Brenda with a gift. Good luck, stay safe. Diana’s embroidery classes were a great success, with Jill’s place mat winning 1st prize in our competition. In July we are making embroidered bookmarks with felt triangles at our Craft mornings taught by our member Diana. Come for a chat, coffee and morning tea and raffle and only $2. Craft is held 1st and 2nd Wednesday of the month 10am till 12, at 18 Whiting Street Tin Can Bay. Hoy is held 3rd Wednesday of each month, a great morning out, grocery items as prizes are popular and the toilet rolls always go first! Money Board, raffle, meat voucher, lucky door prizes. Hoy games and morning tea, entry is $7. Please bring your own mug. Held at Cooloola Bowls Club, Amity Place Tin Can Bay – 9.30 for 10am till 12 noon. The Rainbow Beach Sports Club Fishing compe on was a huge highlight for the town over the month of June. We were very proud to make a dona on to the Zinc 96.1 Brekkie that was held for all par cipants.

Bruce, Kristy, and a ith our big brekkie dona on to the fishing compe on.
Geng in the rigin spirit and also celebra ng Bernie’s birthday!
Well, the second game is only around the corner at me of wri ng and once again it will be great to see the maroon and blue rivalry in store. We would like to share the very exci ng news that the O’Connell Retail Group (current owners of Rainbow Beach and Tin Can Bay IGA) are opening a brand-new store at Imbil (about 30 mins from Gympie). Construc on is underway and the store is expected to open in midSeptember. Keep an eye out for more informa on through our Facebook page in regard to the new store.
We donated brekkie items such as eggs, cheese, sauces, hash browns and margarine. This is a photo of Bruce collec ng the dona on from Kristy - Store Manager and Ma - Owner.
We celebrated the first State of Origin game by wearing our favourite footy colours on the day. Queensland once again dominated the crowd, and it was a double celebra on with Bernie’s birthday as well.
In our catalogues for July, we have some great fresh specials on bulk meat, deli stock and fruit and vegetables lines. These specials will run for the whole month. Please see the photos below. We look forward to another great month of the best that winter has to offer, sunny skies, clear nights and some great fishing!
