January 2017
To a happy, healthy New Year! W
E DID IT… HT was wrapped up before the cousins and grandparents arrived for the festivities, but I had to extricate myself from my third book and second jigsaw to see the proof on its way to the printer today. Now the house is back to normal, kids busy with holiday shifts, and I am wallowing in sedentary activities. But I did see my first dawn for a long time, (you have be up extra early for that!) and I am adding treks and swims into the mix. As I a ventured back the other morning, a man setting out on his walk nodded and said, "It's good to be alive!"

A
MINUTE IS BUT a fleeting moment of time. But can it not be spared on January 26 to reflect upon the consequences of that first fleet arriving on these shores? The commander of that fleet claimed the land, without any consultation with its actual owners and custodians, as being an integral part of the forceful expansion of the British Empire. Dr Ray Barraclough, Convenor of the Australia Day Commemoration Ceremony Committee, invites anyone who so wishes, to share in a brief ceremony during which a minute's silence will be observed to remember the Indigenous people of this land, who lost their lives in the changing possession of this land that began on January 26, 1788. There is a need for three R's – Reflection, Remembrance and Resolution. This is a time for present-day Australians to remember not only the positive side of history but also its underbelly. This, surely, is a sign of maturity and compassion. This Remembrance Ceremony will be held at the RSL Hall, in Maple Street, Maleny at 1oam on Thursday, January 26. For further information Ray Barraclough, phone: 5437 2381, mobile 0451 049 516, email: dorray@westnet.com.au

This is a story that writer Dale Jacobsen felt strongly about. She describes Dr Les Hall as an understated man, and yet he is one of Australia’s important scientists. Les lives right here in Maleny and has just released a book that shares his love of Aussie animals.

N THE COOL of a Maleny summer evening, we gathered at the Pallet Life Gallery Café to sip wine and chat with one of Maleny’s unsung conservationists as he launched his book. The story of the Field Guide to Australian Mammals, so long in the making, is a story of a long friendship, and a collaboration between two men at the top of their game:

naturalist, Dr Les Hall and nature photographer, Steve Parish OAM. Les is a very modest man, quietly involved in many conservation issues, particularly on the Blackall Range, but he is also highly qualified. For 26 years he lectured in human and veterinary anatomy and conservation biology at the University of Queensland, where he supervised 23 post graduate students. Prior to this, he was employed by the Division of Wildlife Research in CSIRO, Canberra. In 2015, he was awarded the Natural History Medallion by the Queensland Naturalist Club for his contributions to our knowledge of Australian mammals. Les grew up bushwalking and exploring caves, where he first came across micro bats, setting the course of his life in science. “I was taught well,” he said. “My parents insisted that every animal has a proper name and I needed to learn these names.”
When he retired to Maleny in 2001, Les took on the ambitious task of writing about his first love, bats, which he had studied for the past 40 years. But he also holds a wide interest in all Australian mammals. Les first met Steve in 2006 when he was looking for somewhere to house his vast collection of photos. He had sent his slides to the Photographic Index of Australian Wildlife, run by the Australian Museum, but he was keen to find somewhere to store the photos where they would be useful. The collection was the result of long field trips into remote places over many years, and contained rare images, mostly of bats. The museum suggested he contact Steve Parish, as he had the facilities to store the images. “I thought: Steve Parish, he’s that famous wildlife photographer who likes koalas and wallabies, but he probably doesn’t have any bat photos.” The two set off on a field trip throughout Australia; Les seeking all forms of bats in out-of-the-way places, dragging Steve and his camera gear into some narrow, almost inaccessible caves filled with guano. A true test of dedication to the cause. During that trip, they photographed over 30 species of bats and formed a bond that has lasted and produced some very important productions. The pair then began work on an impressive tome to be called Mammals of Australia. “Then the world financial crisis hit, affecting the publishing industry pretty hard, followed by floods that destroyed much of Steve’s materials,” explained Les. “We thought that was the end of the book. But Pascal Press, an education publisher who bought out the Steve Parish brand, came across the preparation we had done for the book and phoned me, much to my surprise. “They said that a mammal book would fit very neatly into their series that includes Michael Morcombe’s Field Guide to Australian Birds, and they wanted me to select which

mammals to include for the guide. “Most of my research had ended up in scientific journals,” said Les. “This is good for scientists, but I wanted to reach the general public—to tell interesting little bits of information. “For example, the Tasmanian devil... In breeding season, the female ovulates 50 eggs. About 20 are fertilised and born, but usually only one or two attach to a teat. Do you know what happens to the rest of them? She eats them!” This is the sort of interesting tidbit that is contained in the very readable field guide. Les says, “Something I’m very passionate about is giving wildlife a chance before it is faced with extinction.”
There is an obvious mutual respect between Les and Steve. Steve says going into the field with Les is like taking a CD-ROM with you. “He is unique in the world of scientists. “He knows just about everything there is to know about so many things and he connects with people—even bat haters. “My belief is that science plus emotion equals connection. Les brings the science; I bring the emotion. Hopefully this allows people to make a connection to the natural world. It is an honour to have worked with such a bat man.” Field Guide to Australian Mammals, Pascal Press, is available from Rosetta Books, Maleny.

HINTERLAND TIMES – JANUARY 2017
FFICIAL SUNSHINE COAST Town Crier, John Stevenson, has ‘retired’ from his calling a number of times – once in 1981, then again when his beloved wife, Betty, passed away six years ago – but this time, the great-great grandfather feels that, at the age of 90, it is for good. “Something kept calling me back,” said John, “but now my health is preventing me from going down the street, ringing my bell and calling my news. “I’ve always liked to dress up and entertain the kids, first as a clown, going around the schools, then as Father Christmas. I love to see the joy on their faces,” explains John. “I was living at Redcliffe at the time, running the weekend markets, when one lady said: ‘Why don’t we have a Town Crier?’ That’s how it all started.” On 5 May 1989, the Council of the City of Redcliffe appointed:
‘John Stevenson to the exalted, honorary incumbency of Town Crier for the City of Redcliffe Queensland, in the glorious Commonwealth of Australia, to further the bonds of friendship, harmony and understanding between nations and peoples of the world’. In accepting this appointment, he became a member of The Ancient & Honourable Guild of Australian Town Criers. He was granted the position of Honorary Life Member in the Guild in 1997. While John was the frontman (“Betty always said I have a big mouth), it was Betty’s devotion to recreating the 17th Century costumes that made John such an impressive personality. I asked John if Betty had been a tailor by trade. “Oh no darling, she was a dancer. Worked at the London Palladium. “It all had to be authentic and Betty would spend a long time getting the costumes just right. Every detail, including the colours. She made a replica of Matthew Flinders’ costume when the Norfolk sailed to Redcliffe, and one time, in 2005, we re-enacted John Oxley’s landing at Redcliffe Peninsular in 1824. I saw a couple of his costumes hanging in his wardrobe, and was amazed at the detail and fine needlework. Betty also created costumes for herself to accompany John, complete with crinolines of the day. The detail in John’s presentation extends to the scrolls from which he reads. The words, fashioned in 17th Century language, are his own (all scrolls are limited to 100 words by tradition), but the finely handcrafted script is penned by volunteers. He is particularly proud of a framed parchment on his wall. “A bloke from the army who was recovering from shellshock wanted to do it for me. He even made the paper himself. It is my pride and joy. John grew up in the poorer quarters of the City of London, and his accent, and outlook on life, is a clear indication of his roots. “Life was tough. Mum and Dad worked very hard, and we never had much. “I was out working from the age of 10, mainly milk and

paper runs, to earn ‘picture money’. I lived through the Blitz and was called up in the army when I turned 18. I ended up in the floor-laying business after the war, and worked at it most of my life.â€? Although a member of the Guild, he had lost touch over the years, then, in September last year, out of the blue, he received a letter inviting him to a celebration where they presented him with a certificate acknowledging his outstanding service to the Guild as a life member. “I am the oldest Town Crier in Australia,â€? he said proudly. “It was a big do and they made such a fuss of me.â€? John has been something of a fixture in the Maleny district, anytime there is something to celebrate. He always led the Anzac Day Parade, and every Sunday he dressed in his finery to ring his bell and tell anyone and everyone what was happening in his home town. “It is a beautiful, beautiful town, and I love to let visitors know what they can see, where they can go. I draw people to the Sunday Markets and answer any of their questions.â€? Leafing through John’s many folders of memorabilia, I was impressed by the breadth of his involvement in the communities in which he has lived. So many certificates and letters of appreciation from schools, hospitals, clubs ‌ In each instance, he has given his time and talent freely, bringing an air of celebration and ceremony to so many events. Usually with Betty by his side. It will be sad not to see his friendly face and hear his call: “Hear ye, hear ye ‌â€? but John Stevenson can finally retire with a sense of pride that his allconsuming passion has brought joy and a smile to many who live in, and visit, the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

N ENTERING THE estate of Harry and Marlene Churches, one soon discovers the magic and majesty of Strathgordon. Clydesdale horses and Shetland ponies feature in the stables beyond the hand-cobbled driveway. Add to that peacocks, peahens, cattle, dogs, chooks and galahs and the family is complete. I was intrigued as to how Marlene, an entomologist, and Harry, a retired communications technical officer, came to be hosting bus tours, weddings and private parties on their property. “Harry’s had the horses since 1978,” said Marlene. “I’d always wanted a Clydesdale stallion. My first one was named Aurora Flash Michael commonly known as Flash. He was a champion,” Harry added nostalgically.

Harry and Marlene moved to their property in 1997. They chose the name Strathgordon from a map of Scotland. It signified an area where Clydesdale horses were bred. It seems that Harry’s love of Clydesdales is in the blood. His maternal grandfather bred and worked these horses in Grenfell, NSW. “He built roads. They had to cut through the bush. Half a dozen horses pulled a massive road plough. He also worked a horse drawn grader,” said Harry reflecting on his family history. The business of Strathgordon Clydesdales began almost by default a year after the couple moved to Stoney Creek. Harry recalled, “Somebody from Caboolture Shire Council asked if they could bring tour buses past our place to look at the horses. “The next request was to put some hay down so that when they drove past the horses would be there. “Finally they asked if they could bring people into the property.”

Harry and Marlene Churches with their beloved Clydesdales
Around that time, a local restauranteur organised a gettogether of business people and tourist operators. Marlene and Harry attended. It was at that point ‘Strathgordon Clydesdales’ found direction. “There was a lot of interest and the business spread by word of mouth. “We get day-trip groups from areas such as northern New South Wales, western Toowoomba and Bundaberg. Sometimes the coaches bring up to 65 people but we have a minimum of 15,” said Marlene who is also a marriage celebrant and hosts weddings at Strathgordon. I enquired about the interesting combination that the Clydesdales and Shetlands present. “We’ve got eight horses - four Shetlands and four Clydesdales. We initially inherited a Shetland that someone wanted to offload because it had problems with its feet,” said Harry. Marlene added, “People asked if they could bring respite groups including those in wheelchairs. Clydesdales are a bit tall for some to pat and so we sourced some wellbehaved Shetlands.” Showing the Clydesdales is also a matter of pride for the Churches. They display multiples of prize winning ribbons primarily from the Royal Brisbane Show. Gatton Heavy Horse Field Day is also a noted event where the Strathgordon Clydesdales strut their stuff. “They also have period sections where you dress up to suit the era. Marlene and I used to do the 1940s. We had suits with vests and high collars and would scour the op shops for the right shoes,” said Harry. In preparation for tours Harry and Marlene’s day begins around 6am. Stables are
cleaned, sawdust spread and chairs placed. Then they bring the horses up to the stables where they are preened to look their best. Visitors are welcomed, seated and given an introduction by Marlene while chooks weave their way between the chairs. She then invites the onlookers to feed and pat the horses. This is followed by an informative and historical talk by Harry whose wit and banter entertains. He is however, interrupted intermittently by the wail of competing peacocks. Harry shared, “Shetlands and Clydesdales are both draught horses although used for different purposes. One was for pulling ploughs and heavy equipment and the smaller hauled coal from narrow mine shafts, replacing children.” Marlene walks the horses from the stables for a working demonstration and photo opportunity. A wander through the small gift shop housing memorabilia brings the tour to a close. “Groups stay for up to two hours. However, we can accommodate those who wish to tailor make their stay. Family groups sometimes like to spend half a day here,” said Marlene. After the bus departs down the cobbled driveway, predominantly guarded by red gums and bloodwoods, the day is not yet done for Harry and Marlene. The afternoon
feeding routine begins at 5pm and can take up to two hours. “They all get different feeds and have to be in their own stables because there are no friends at feed time,” said Harry. As the sun sets behind the stables of Strathgordon the menagerie of odd bedfellows settle for the night. Watchful cattle dogs safeguard their charges while the sporadic shrieks of peacocks pierce the night air. Then, as if to tell the story of the Clydesdales, whispering breezes drift through red box trees and cast a blanket of peace over the homestead. Bookings and enquiries: phone 07 5496 1590.

A remedy through rock ‘n’ roll
Paul Richardson loved music and theatre when he was young, but school bullying, a change of country and biking all came before he returned to his creative roots. Now “Richo” has found a way to transform negatives into positives, for himself and the community, through the power of music.
Paul Richardson is better known as "Richo", his talent is as familiar in the hinterland as our Glasshouse Mountains
words by Ally Bing photography by Jody Gilchrist
HILDHOOD IN CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand, was not idyllic. Paul “Richo” Richardson was bullied at school for being from the wrong side of town, and he quickly abandoned his talent for theatre and music and took up rugby to avoid persecution from other kids. His environment required that he become tough and angry to defend himself. By the age of seventeen, Richo had become entrenched with an outlaw biker gang, and had lost friends to violence and depression even at that early age. By twenty-one he left home to move to Australia. Burly and full-bearded, Richo still looks tough. However, his appearance is deceptive. He has discovered throughout the course of a transformative path involving Maleny, family, and country music, that “the energy it takes to be angry is the same type of energy it takes to be able to help someone.” And he finds that latter goal to be increasingly important.
C
Richo was still struggling to find meaning in his life when he arrived to Maleny. Married and running a successful business in the Brisbane area, Richo’s lifestyle was selfdestructive rather than fulfilling. It became clear to him and his wife, Lisa, that a change was necessary, and that it might be found in the Maleny area. They were right. Richo met musicians such as Kelly Cork and Col Finley who would later become inspirations and collaborators. He first became involved with the Maleny Singers, and then the Maleny Apex Club. A venture to help the Apex Club start the now-popular “Paws of Thunder” fundraiser miraculously led to a connection to songwriting and the world of country music, when Richo went on a research expedition to the home of an existing community dog race in Nundle, NSW. On that trip, he discovered the venue The Dag Sheep Station, home of the beloved Tamworth Country Music

Festival. He bonded with the owner, John Krsulja, and they made a pact with one another that they would each finish their half-written songs before they next met. Just as Richo finished his first, entitled Troubled Man, Krsulja called him and invited him to a singersongwriter’s retreat at the Dag that would ultimately cement Richo’s feeling he was finally on the right track. Richo put out his first EP, Troubled Man, this past year. The songs are honest, and catchy. The song Love is a Vandal off the album has charted on local radio stations at No. 7 in the Top 20. Country music was not his first musical calling (and in fact he was in a successful grunge rock and roll band for many years), but, more importantly, the country music community took him in and accepted him as one of their own. Karma is a continuing theme in Richo’s approach to life. That generous acceptance could be why he feels it so important to support and give back. “For the first time in my life, I have a purpose,” he says determinedly. “It is to nurture other artists and give them platforms to perform on. Once you have a platform, you have a responsibility to use it properly.” Richo started a casual songwriting group out of his garage called “Blokes and Guitars” to give people a place to play music together, but also to be able to discuss often-hidden issues such as depression and anxiety. After witnessing the positive interactions in the group, he was inspired to begin hosting the “Richo’s Roundup” sessions, live music evenings in Maleny in which three feature songwriters sit on stage together and take turns playing original music “in the round.” The musicians listen to one another, react, and change their music to respond. Richo’s Roundup will have two showcases at this year’s Tamworth Country Music Festival, and Richo himself will be playing five solo shows. Increasing rates of mental health issues, lack of support, and consequently rates of suicides are the

reasons Richo calls himself a Troubled Man today. Richo has collaborated with Col Finley most recently to create Above the Blue, a compilation album of songs written by Sunshine Coast musicians intended to raise funds for the mental health awareness organisation Beyond Blue. After a successful album launch and over $15,000 raised, Above the Blue will host another fundraising event on February 25. He hopes for Maleny that the people continue to know and support one another, and find ways to love themselves. Until then, Richo will continue to provide through his music and events “stories for the soul, ways to connect us and make us feel unalone”.

Many roads on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland are named after families who farmed the land, and each has a wealth of stories to tell. Victoria McGuin went to meet two cousins from the De Vere family, whose road climbs the land in Kureelpa.
WHAT MAKES A VALID WILL – PART 1 by Victoria McGuin
As the dear readers would already know a Will is a document that sets out the wishes of a person regarding how that person’s estate should be distributed after death. I shall call the will-maker “the Testator” for the rest of this Article. For a Will to be valid it Must meet certain formal requirements as follows: 1. WRI TI NG The Will must be in writing. This means that it can be handwritten or typed. The same writing method – either handwriting or typed – must be used throughout the Will to avoid confusion. It can be made in any language but it is obviously best if it is written in English to avoid problems of translation or interpretation. 2. SI G NED It should be signed by the Testator making the Will. A signature can also be a mark in case the person signing the Will is blind or illiterate. In circumstances where the Testator is unable to mark or sign the Will then someone else can sign on the Testator’s behalf providing firstly that the Testator is present when the Will is signed and secondly that this is disclosed in the Will. 3. DATED The Will must be dated the day it was signed. Although a Will is effective from the date of the Testator’s death and not from the date of signing, the date of signing must appear on the Will. If the Will has no date then the witnesses may be required to swear an affidavit about the date the Will was signed. 4. WI TNESSES The Testator’s signature must be witnessed by two witnesses who must both be present when the Testator signs. It is also important that a beneficiary not witness the Testator’s signature as in a worst case scenario it could mean that any gift to that beneficiary is invalid. In my next article I shall discuss matters that Should; rather than Must; be contained in a Will.

HE AUSTRALIAN DE VERE family may not be descendants of the aristocratic De Veres from England, but many of them have certainly attained impressive positions. Terese tells me, “My uncle Edward became Maroochy Shire Chairman, which is basically the mayor, from April 1967 to March 1982.” Other family members served in New Guinea and the Middle East, one became a councillor at Kandanga, Edward received an OBE and one grandson, Kevin Rudd, became Prime Minister of Australia for a time. As we sit around the kitchen table in Terese’s Kureelpa home, she and her cousin Denis share memories of their youth in the area. “This property of about 160 acres was owned by the Howard Brothers,” Denis tells me. “The De Vere family rented it from them. Our uncle, Bryan De Vere, bought it from the Howards in 1946.” “We’re a big family,” continues Terese, “Although it wasn’t considered big back then! Grandpa Pop (Edwin De Vere) and Grandma Hannah were married in New South Wales and had four children there, before moving to Queensland in 1919, where they had another three.” The seven children had a mixture of educational experiences, including Kureelpa, Dulong and Mapleton primary schools and the Nambour Rural School. Denis laughs, “Dulong School is now a quarry, which prompted a friend to tell me ‘Oh, you went to school in a big hole!’” “All the families around here were close knit,” Terese shares. “Children would come out of the scrub on all sides and we’d walk to school through the fields. Then after school we’d walk home, round the cows up and do the milking.” The cousins believe that Edwin De Vere, also known as ‘Pop’ or ‘Joe’, and his wife Hannah, were “possibly coerced into coming up here by an in-law whose family was in the hotel business”. Indeed, soon after arriving, Joe ‘Pop’ became the licensee of the Commercial Hotel in Nambour in 1920 for a year, and their second daughter, Margaret, was born in the hotel. However, farming proved the mainstay, with everyone involved in dairy, cane, corn, pineapples, potatoes,

bananas and, later, ginger. Over the years, the area gradually became known as the De Vere’s road – hence the name today. “We just called area names after the people who lived here, like ‘the Sherwells’ in the next lane,” explains Denis. “It wasn’t anything particularly official that I can remember.” The cousins reminisce, and a story about a tennis court brings a chuckle. “Hannah bought the farm adjoining Bryan’s with an inheritance from her father’s estate, and they were celebrating Josie’s 14th birthday there,” shares Denis. “Pop was showing off how to ride a horse, came unstuck and ended up in Brisbane in hospital for three months! While he was away, the kids got the horse and ploughed and shovelled and created a roughshod tennis court.

Pop De Vere with one of his sisters
Bryan and Frank in the Middle East
“Pop wasn’t too happy when he came out! But he made sure it was finished properly, and then people came from all around to play tennis there. “Pop broke his leg another time too,” adds Terese. “He was stacking timber when it happened, and Hannah had to hold the farm together. She did that a lot.” Denis agrees, “All the families mucked in and helped Hannah while Pop was off being an entrepreneur and getting his bones broken!” One of Joe’s (Pop’s) many jobs was to sell milk, which isn’t as simple as it sounds. “He would milk the cows and catch the tram to Nambour with the milk. Then he would travel by wagon down to Petrie Creek, take a boat to Evans Street in Maroochydore; then trolley it to the Howard Brothers’ corner store opposite the hotel and flog the milk, and then he had to clean and empty everything and come home.” Sadness struck the family when Joe and Hannah’s youngest son, Kevin, was celebrating his 21st in Kureelpa Hall. “Hannah said she wasn’t feeling well,” remembers Denis. “She put me down and went to have a lie down, and she died of a heart attack. We were all devastated.” Everyone rallied around and helped keep things running, and over time Pop would end up staying with his

different children across the state, rather than at the farm, before passing away while visiting relatives in 1963. Denis himself lived nearby, “My dad, Frank, bought a dairy farm in Image Flat.” Denis completed his National Service and then “signed on again, because it’s better than milking cows! “I missed out on being posted to Vietnam and studied for promotion and left the army as a sergeant at an ammunition depot at Bogan Gate, New South Wales.” However, sadness hit his home too. “Dad was killed in a tractor accident at 53. He’d just bought his block of land in Kiel Mountain Road to put his retirement home on. “My wife Irene, who was in the WRAAC, came home with me, and I ended up milking cows for 30 years, before retiring. We’ve been travelling ever since, for about 20 years.” Terese chips in, “They’re nomads!” She herself stayed local after school. “I started working in town at a dress shop, ‘Gay Styles’, next door to Ian Jones’ music shop. All the musicians went in there and we’d peer out of the door at them.” After various roles, travels, a marriage, and two daughters, Terese ended up back in Kureelpa in 1992. “My

mum and dad were still here and most the family were around the general area,” she smiles. From the tales shared by these cousins, it seems that travel and adventure appeals to many of the De Vere family, but eventually, the hinterland homestead calls.

Gluten free heaven at The Orangery
Heather Andrews invites to you to dine at her new restaurant called The Orangery by Michelle Gilmore
N
EW LOCAL, Heather Andrews, is a self-confessed hoarder. Walk into The Orangery and you can't help but be enchanted by the white, light and airy space and corners of memorabilia. Heather pointed to her great grandfather's desk from Rhodesia. "It's part of my heritage and has travelled to four countries - it's where I did homework as a child." Looking around at the pretty 'shabby chic country' interior with breezy verandahs (perfect for a function), it is not surprising to hear that Heather worked as a decorator in the UK and a wedding co-ordinator. The experienced restaurateur and her husband, Trevor, now call Maleny home, "There's a kind of peacefulness; people are more friendly, they're not in a hurry. "When I came to look at the building, it was all glass windows and reminded me of a greenhouse, and we're in the Glasshouse Mountains," hence the name. You'll find sandwiches and light bites, tapas, mains and
weekend breakfasts: "Most of our food is gluten free because I'm coeliac and don’t believe we need to be punished with tasteless, horrible food. "We make all our own cakes and sauces in-house; cut our own chips each morning, so they are real chips - not out of a bag." There's a senior’s menu and a welcoming sign for feeding mums, and a special children's menu, which includes a lunchbox. "As a mum and a grandmum, we know they don't always want to eat when you do - they can take this with them." Vintage tragic myself, I goggled at shelf after shelf of pretty teacups and tea pots. Heather said their high teas are always served on dainty china. She pulled out drawers of the antique tea sets, ready to serve 120 plus guests. I can't wait to try it. The Orangery is located near Cairncross Corner, and is open weekends 7.30am until late; Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 9am-4pm and Fridays 9 until late. Call 0417 972 051 to book!

Bees feature at the
Ginger Flower and Food Festival
A
T JANUARY’S GINGER Flower and Food Festival there will be more than just ginger, flowers and food, with bees and their precious life story taking to the stage. The Ginger Factory’s head bee keeper, Gayle Currie, will be sharing her lifetime knowledge of honey and native bees and how important they are in society. Gayle is as passionate as you can be about her ‘girls’, the bees, and can talk all day about them, especially how we need to care for them. “Without bees we wouldn’t have our beautiful heliconias and ornamental gingers, let alone the edible ones, or coffee, pineapples, or chocolate!” Gayle said. Another very interesting presenter at the Ginger Flower & Food Festival will be sustainable farmer Gary Hands from Kookaburra Organics, who will be demonstrating how to successfully grow root crops including turmeric, galangal and yams. On the foodie front, due to popular demand, Chris White from Hungry Feel Eating House will be returning and using his talents to make a chicken boudin blanc sausage infused with liquid ginger. Don’t miss Jodie Williams from Black Ant Gourmet, Kin Kin share her incredible story of owning a farm, general store and catering business, while making a delicious creation from her hand-raised products. This is just a taste of who will be presenting at the iconic festival at Yandina, on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. Other presenters include Gympie’s food ambassador Matt Golinski, Kelly Lord and Tom Swapp from the famous Spirit House, free ranging chef Peter Wolfe, gardening gurus Cath Manual, Paul Plant and Maureen Simons, as well as ornamental ginger expert Kim Taylor. For the full line up see www.gingerfactory.com.au The 2017 Ginger Flower and Food Festival will run from 20-22 January with incredible floral displays, plant sales of over 3000 gingers and heliconias, delicious food, local stall holders, roving entertainments and a native animal display too. FTER NEARLY 17 YEARS of running Mapleton Hardware and Garden Centre, Rob and Toni Lack have decided to try something new…. Hinterland Treasures and Garden Centre - in the same location! “While we’d like to thank all those who’ve supported us, we’ve found in recent years that the hardware section just wasn’t working for us,” says Rob. The space is bright, breezy and welcoming, with solid timber furniture, hanging baskets, framed pictures, clocks, lamps, screens, fine crockery, aromatic candles and much more. “We’ve started stocking candles from the Coastal Candle Co, made from soy wax with wooden wicks, here on the Sunshine Coast, with not a whiff of petroleum or paraffin!” Another new edition is the Redcliffe-made Canterbury Blue chalk paint, which is ideal for creating ‘shabby chic’
furniture, as no sanding, priming or undercoat is needed. Rob and Toni’s daughter, Nadia, has already painted some elegant second-hand drawers, which look fantastic. “Nadia has always been very creative,” Toni shares. “She will be holding classes here very soon, helping people transform their furniture with these paints.” The garden centre looks beautiful, with welcoming seating, quirky plant arrangements and interesting ornaments on display. The re-opening in December went well, with a mix of locals and tourists. “I think our new Facebook page helped spread the word, alongside the Hinterland Times,” says Rob. “We’re excited about the changes,” Toni smiles. “And we’re glad we’ve stayed to try something new, because it’s hard to beat living up here.” Hinterland Treasures is open Thurs-Mon, 9am-4pm. “May the future never see me as a victim, but as someone who moved forward with courage, fearlessly paying the price she had to pay.” Mata Hari, 1917, shortly before standing in front of the firing squad – without blindfold, looking death in the eye. Who doesn’t remember the femme fatale, that gorgeous creature who seduced men into giving away their secrets during WWI? Was it her beauty, the web of lies she spun, the many influential admirers that were too afraid of exposure or was she really a spy? Paulo Coelho’s touching and riveting tale of Mata Hari brings a fascinating insight into the woman behind the dancer. We all know about Mata Hari’s execution. What we don’t know is how she felt, what she thought and why she lived her life the way she did. Paulo Coelho’s narrative answers these questions.
If you listen to the radio then you will know who Mark Colvin is. Mark Colvin is a broadcasting legend. Mark has been covering local and global events for more than four decades. He has reported on wars, royal weddings and everything in between. In the midst of all this he discovered that his father was an MI6 spy. Light and Shadow is the incredible story of a father waging a secret war against communism during the Cold War, while his son comes of age as a journalist during the tumultuous Whitlam and Fraser years and embarks on the risky career of a foreign correspondent. Mark Colvin’s engrossing memoir takes you inside the coverage of major news events and gently navigates the complexity of his father’s double life.
Peter's dog Nell has an amazing sense of smell. Whether it's finding a lost shoe or discovering who did a poo on the new gravel path, her eversniffing nose is always hard at work. But Nell has other talents too. Every Monday she goes to school with Peter and listens to children read. So who better to have on hand when they arrive one morning to discover that the school's books have all disappeared! Who could have taken them? And why? There's only one dog for the job … and Detective Dog Nell is ready to sniff out the culprit! Written by the brilliant Julia Donaldson (The Gruffalo) and illustrated by the multi-talented illustrator Sara Ogilvie, Detective Dog is a fast-paced celebration of books, reading, libraries, and the relationship between a little boy and his rather special dog.
Little People, Big Ideas: join in interactive play that allows smaller children to explore, discover, move, and create with their parents in a casual, playful learning environment. Living My Dream

HE BEST THING about having a famous artist for a mother is that she fully understands my need to create and is very supportive.” Brydie told us. “A lot of the people I studied with have been forced into jobs that aren’t creative because their parents don’t regard “art” as a “real” job. When Mum left school, she was told it wasn’t possible for a young person to make a living out of art so she took a job as a window dresser for a large retail chain.” “2017 will be a very exciting year for both Kendall and Brydie,” said gallery director, Joan Page. “Not only will they move into their new home and studio in Mapleton but they will also launch a fabulous new range of homewares marketed under the name Kendall and Miss Brydie.” “I’ve spent the last few months designing doona covers, dinner sets, cushion covers and aprons as well as completing twelve new paintings for my joint Christmas/New Year show with Mum at the Montville Art Gallery.” Brydie said. “Brydie’s paintings keep evolving,” Joan Page explained. “They show a talent and maturity way beyond her twenty years. They’re whimsical, bold and gutsy with lots of strong primary colours and are very affordable. Her small paintings make lovely gifts at just $120 each.” Open daily from 10 to 5, Montville Art Gallery is located at 138 Main Street Montville opposite the Village Green. A National Themed Art Awards 2017
C
OMMUNITY MEMBERS gathered at Maleny Neighbourhood Centre last month to hear about a creative arts collaboration, the multidimensional ‘Obi Arts Project’ and the ‘Obi Arts Prize’ 2017. The Obi Arts Project now includes two new categories ‘Sing for Change’ and ‘Creative Writing for Change’. For the singing section, a panel of esteemed singer/songwriters and industry professionals assess submitted works for their relevance to this year’s nominated theme of RESPECT, with the focus on four social areas: Indigenous healing, LGBT issues, domestic violence and refugees. Marketing Manager, Lynda Simpson, explained, "This is not a competition, all suitable songs will be available online at www.obiartprize.com. "From the sale of songs via download 50% goes back to the artists and 50% to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre to help fund social programs. If a sponsor for the program is secured we will produce an additional CD.” For the creative writing category, submissions are invited in the form of poetry, short stories or plays, or spoken word pieces, again based on the RESPECT theme within the four social areas. "All relevant works will be included in the eBook and
simply assessed by the panel for their proficient expression, in a positive way, of the theme." Again, 50% of the profits from the sale of the eBook go back to the writers and 50% to the MNC to help fund social programs. The Obi Art Prize is based upon relevant social themes that the MNC feels require increased public awareness and greater understanding. Each year a new theme is released and new social issues used to highlight the theme. There are three prizes for the Obi Art Prize: Obi Art Prize, Obi People's’ Choice Award and the Obi Youth Award. Said Lynda, "It’s easy to express what respect ‘isn’t’, but the Art Prize challenges you to express what respect ‘is’." Artists from around Australia are encouraged to submit works. Submissions close March 31.

ROGRAM COORDINATOR of the Maleny Arts Council, Professor Peter Lavery, announced the first three shows of the 2017 season at the group’s Christmas Party on the Deck at the Community Centre last month. The season will open on Sunday, March 23 at 2pm in the MCC with Eleanor’s Story. This is the true story of Eleanor Garner who left New York with her family in 1939 en route to Germany where her father had been appointed to a new job. Unfortunately Hitler declared war and Eleanor grew up in Nazi Germany under the threat of the Gestapo, allied bombing, the Russian invasion and the terror of Soviet occupancy of Berlin. Her autobiography has been adapted for the stage and this unique story will have Eleanor’s granddaughter playing the eponymous role. “Fred Smith is an alternative Australian singer/ songwriter who was the first diplomat to be posted to Uruzgan in 2009, and our second show features this unique singer with the series of songs he wrote on the realities of the war in Afghanistan both for soldiers and civilians,” said Peter Lavery. “This is a combination of song, story, and imagery and our audience will leave with a profound sense of discovery of something important about us and our war in Afghanistan,” he said. Fred Smith will be in Maleny on May 7. The third program is particularly exciting according to Professor Lavery. “Opera Queensland, after their hugely successful visit to Maleny for Figaro last year (featuring the Maleny Singers), will create a program especially for us and Maleny. “This is a considerable honour and shows the high regard our artists have for this town and especially for the Arts Council,” he said. The afternoon with Opera Queensland will be in September.
President of the Arts Council, Professor Jennifer Radbourne, again invited audience members to meet the artists over a drink on the Deck after the shows, and emphasised that members were the Arts Council’s ambassadors who needed to ‘talk up’ the excellent programs the group brings to Maleny. “We need to increase our membership and our lists of friends because we want everyone to know that we deliver quality programs by national and international artists who would not normally come here.
Maleny Arts Council
2017 season a n n o u n c e d “As Maleny changes, becomes more sophisticated and embraces the future, so too must the Arts Council move with those changes and deliver programs our audiences want to see. “And our artists love it here. It is a welcoming town and they enjoy the opportunity we give them of interacting with their audience over a relaxed drink after the shows,” she said. All programs will be advertised at the appropriate time and tickets are always available on line by visiting the web site www.malenyartscouncil.com or at the Maleny Information Centre in Maple Street. Membership inquiries should be made to the treasurer, John Marsden, at jp.marsden@bigpond.com

C R E AT I V E C U T S The Ryan Giles Band at Finbars
Balloonacy
Look forward to a mix of funk, reggae, groove with 70’s and 90’s covers. Ryan first picked up a guitar at age 6. When Ryan reached high school he started playing school bands and and it was there that he discovered he had a fantastic voice to coincide with his already 10 years of strumming guitar. After early success he left the teenage angst of 90’s punk and found the world of “roots music”. Ryan's music has come of age -the popular Noosa act is extremely dance orientated. The first single and video of his new album is now due for release. See his perform at Finbars 7pm, January 7.
Old Time dances at Belli Hall

Entry is $14 per person, $5 for student, children free and includes a country style supper. Raffle tickets at the door. Belli Hall is located at 1170 Kenilworth Road, Belli Park. Captain Fantastic
It has been a wild journey for ex-Brisbane, now local, blues/rock act Transvaal Diamond Syndicate, since their inception back in late 2009, almost immediately garnering attention for their raw and energetic live shows. The well-known act, who have gathered fans nationally from constant touring and strong social engagement, line up at the Palmwoods Hotel on Saturday, January 14, FREE, as part of the 'Palmwoods Got the Blues' monthly series. Lead singer Christian Tryhorn says, “We started playing Palmwoods when we first formed about six years ago. It's a great classic Aussie pub with a long history of original music support. We've always been well supported at that venue.” Appearing with friends and also well-loved coastal acts, Buck Dean and the Green Lips, and Los Laws.
World singing at Witta Lennon: Through a Glass Onion Created and performed by renowned Australian actor/musician John Waters and esteemed singer/pianist Stewart D’Arrietta, Lennon: Through a Glass Onion, part concert and part biography, reveals the essence of the life and astonishing talent of one of the most admired icons of the past century. With a story and 31 songs including: Imagine, Strawberry Fields Forever, Revolution, All You Need is Love, Come Together, Help, Working Class Hero, Jealous Guy and more. Back in Australia following a sensational 16 week season in New York, for the audience this is either an emotional trip down memory lane or a wonderful introduction to the life and times of one of the most fascinating musicians of our time. Thursday, January 12 and Friday January 13, at The Events Centre Playhouse, Caloundra. 36
HINTERLAND TIMES – JANUARY 2017
‘Balloonacy!’ will be coming to Maleny RSL on Tuesday, January 10 at 10.30am. Sound operator is Mark Stewart from Nambour and Bruce Hamilton of Sunshine Beach designed the soundscape, with 3bCREATIVE focussing on quality, affordable, family friendly entertainments. Come and watch the movie Captain Fantastic on Saturday, January 14, starring Viggo Mortensen as a rugged individualist bringing up his six children in a remote forest, where they learn survival skills and are educated without the accoutrements of modern life. When his wife dies near her parents in New Mexico, he takes the children on a road trip to ensure her funeral wishes are met. A culture clash ensues and the film explores themes of protection from modern life, or risking exposure to corrupting influences. The Maleny Community Centre doors open for dinner, catered by Lumbini, at 6-7pm, with bar, tea, coffee and slices available. The programme starts at 7.15pm and runs for 118 minutes. Cost is $8 per person.

Beerwah hosts 8 Ball Aitken
Colt Seavers Band in Beerwah
Even though 8 Ball Aitken is just now releasing his first album in the states, the eight albums in his awardwinning Australian catalogue offer further proof that you don’t have to be American to deliver authentic Americana music. As his growing legions of nonAussie fans also confirm, his bluesified, swampified, countrified southern rock feels right at home on stages in Texas, or Nashville, Ontario or Amsterdam. “If the girls don’t dance, it ain’t rock ’n’ roll,” Aitken insists. Doing his best to make sure his audiences get on their feet, this accomplished slide player and frequent one-man band even pulls out a variety of homemade “junk” guitars crafted from recycled parts. 8 Ball Aitken plays at the Beerwah on Saturday, January 14.
Great beauty Local artist Diane Green has been working solidly throughout 2016 to produce the 14 oil paintings of her first solo exhibition. The paintings are the result of her investigation into the emotionally charged connection we sometimes develop with particular screen characters as we follow them on their journeys of love, hate, hope and fear - a connection that stays with us long after the credits have ceased to roll. The exhibition 'The Great Beauty and Other Stories' opens at 6pm January 13, at the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre, 11A Maple Street Cooroy. It runs until February 19. All are welcome to attend the opening event.
The Colt Seavers Band are a fun band serious about entertainment, and they will be performing at Beerwah on Friday, January 13. The band's aim is to blend country and rockabilly, with the double bass bridging two musical styles. The trio of musicians are the core of the band that is often built upon with a bass player, allowing Seavers to pick up guitars, mandolins and banjos at times, and a saxophonist also joins the band from time-to-time. Over the next 12 months, the Colt Seavers Band will be the name on more and more people's lips as they increase their fan base, exploring and performing at events, including Australia's premier country music celebration, the 2017 Tamworth Country Music Festival.

HINTERLAND TIMES – JANUARY 2017
In the Wild Thankyou
W
with Spencer Shaw
ELL, HERE WE ALL are at the end of another year (as our calendars tell us) and I’d like to say congratulations to everybody out there doing their bit to restore habitat and ecological connections, on the Hinterland, on the Sunshine Coast and throughout South East Queensland. First up, thanks to the Indigenous people of this country who shaped the natural ecosystems (that we perceive to be wild) to be productive landscapes of diversity and wealth. The beauty of their land management is finally beginning to be recognised after an unfortunate delay of 200 years. Thank you to past, present and future Indigenous Australians for sharing your knowledge. Secondly, thanks to all the landholders who are revegetating and regenerating the bush or rainforest on their blocks. It fills me with gratitude that you are all willing to spend so much of your own time, energy and capital on restoring, that for which we all benefit – thank you! These amazing people are often out their rain, hail or shine fulfilling their passion for restoring our native forests, planting, weeding and so much more. Thanks also to all the native gardeners out there who are bringing the beauty of our native flora to our towns and suburbs. Then there are the folk who are restoring our native ecosystems on public land. In parks, gullies, creek lines and
Forest Heart Local Native Plant Nursery 20 Coral St, Maleny Phone: 5435 2193
other community spaces, hundreds of locals are busy planting and weeding to restore our native vegetation for not only our benefit but also our threatened native fauna, from them too, there is I’m sure, a thank you. Next, thanks to all the small businesses out there that are now making a living restoring habitat, again for which we all benefit. We are fortunate in the Hinterland to have seen a culture of small business habitat restoration develop over the last 20 years. The Sunshine Coast and Hinterland Ecobusinesses lead the way, whether it is in Nest boxes, Wildlife Rescue, Fauna Management and Monitoring, Seed Collection, Consultancy, Education, Nurseries, Revegetation and Regeneration – hopefully you all know who you are, and you are amazing! Congratulations for making ecological restoration your living and taking it to a whole new level! Last but not least, thanks to the amazing Brush Turkey Enterprises / Forest Heart team, an amazing group of people, who inspire me and educate me every day. Thank you, Karen, Sam, Jake, Jem, Nicole, Mac, Crystal, Brea, Meighan and Angus. But let’s not rest on our laurels… there is so much more to be done to stem the critical loss of habitat and ecological connectivity on the Coast and Hinterland. In 2017 we need to be active more than ever to save the amazing ecological diversity that we are all, the present caretakers of.
Habitat, Birds and 2017
B
ARUNG LANDCARE wishes residents and visitors alike all the very best for 2017 and maybe we will get the gentle soaking rain for which we have all been wishing! Our forests, gardens and revegetation projects have been hanging in there but will respond quickly once there’s some moisture in the soil. There has, however, been a remarkable amount of growth in established trees and shrubs, despite the dry spell. Flowering in the Flame Trees (Brachychiton acerifolius) has been magnificent, providing splashes of bright red in streets, gardens and forests around Christmas. Of particular note, has been the extent and diversity of bird life where there is healthy and diverse vegetation, in other words, healthy habitat. From tiny Mistletoe Birds to large Brush Turkeys and quiet Scrub Wrens to noisy Friar Birds, there has been a lot of feathered wildlife present recently. Diverse sources of food and a regular
Diverse Habitat
water supply have been the key. Macarangas and lillipillies have been supplying seed and fruit with thousands of empty seed cases and fallen fruit on the ground. Loose bark on sandpaper figs and paperbarks has been regularly probed for
hidden insects, and the large inflorescences of Swamp Banksia (Banksia robur) and other flowering trees have supplied nectar. The natural habitat of Swamp Banksia is the poorly-drained soils of the coastal regions but it also grows very well in the heavy volcanic soils of the eastern escarpment. Many trees have shed excess leaves to conserve moisture, a bonus for ground feeding birds such as Whipbirds, Pigeons and Doves. Small but noisy flocks of Lorikeets have been swooping around and have often been seen chasing Figbirds out of the sandpaper figs. Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos have continued to visit and Wedge-tailed Eagles have glided on the updrafts from the escarpment. It has been a wonderful time for birds, largely due to the efforts of residents who have created, improved and connected habitat. Keep up the good work during 2017. The rewards are great.

Passion in Your Garden FRANZ LOORS
A
NATIVE TO BRAZIL, Argentina and Paraquay, passion fruit is grown in many parts of the
world. Easily grown on a trellis, fence or even a dead tree the creeper grows vigorously and with the right care produce bountiful crops. Panama Gold, Panama Rd and Nelly Kelly are the most popular varieties. The blue Passion Flower, Passiflora Caerulia is usually used as a rootstock to graft such varieties as Nelly Kelly. Choose a sunny and frost free position with good loamy soil. Passion fruit are heavy feeders and need adequate water and fertilizer.
Loors Landscaping
Well rotted cattle manure and citrus fertilizer are good choices to produce large yields. Vines should be pruned to control their growth and also encourage flowering. Your first crop can be expected approx 18 months after planting. If your vine is not producing fruit it could be due to one or more of the following reasons: 1) lack of adequate water 2) heavy rain during flowering which affects the viability of pollen 3) Excessive nitrogen rich fertilizer
which will tend to produce extra leaf growth at the expense of flowering 4) Lack of sunshine, at least 5-6 hours per day is required.

N 1928 aMelIa earHart was the first female pilot to fly solo across the atlantic; in 1930 she joined the Zonta Club of New york City and in July 1937 she disappeared over the Pacific attempting a circumnavigation of the world. In 1938 Zonta International established the amelia earhart Fellowships in her memory. since then hundreds of post graduate women studying aeronautical science or engineering have received a Zonta amelia earhart Fellowship, worth today $us10,000. these women have gone on to become astronauts, aerospace engineers, astronomers, professors, geologists and even a secretary of the us air Force. Many australian women have been among that number. On January 5, 1939 amelia was officially declared ‘dead in absentia’ and in January every year Zonta Clubs around the world celebrate her achievements as an example of their mission to advance the status of women. President of the Zonta Club of Blackall range, alison Huth, invited applications from sunshine Coast women graduates for a Fellowship. there are 35 awarded each year throughout the world. “the amelia earhart Fellowship is open for women doing postgraduate study in aeronautical engineering and related sciences. It can be used at any university where the Phd student is working. “If there is anyone eligible in the area she should contact the Club on pr@zontablackallrange.org.au and we will get back to you,” said alison. the Zonta Club of Blackall range has invited a special woman to be the guest speaker for their amelia earhart dinner meeting on January 17. local writer, Prue Mason, has been a pilot most of her life and is currently engaged in writing a novel about an australian aviatrix of the 20s and 30s.
Challenge yourself this summer with Nature Play
N
ature Play QueeNslaNd has launched a range of new summer-themed activity playlists in time for the school holidays. treasurer and Minister for sport Curtis Pitt said the additional Nature Play initiatives will encourage kids and families to get outside. Our hinterland is no better place for kids to explore our abundant natural spaces. “summer in Queensland is the perfect time to visit our state’s iconic beaches and beautiful parks and recreation spaces,” Mr Pitt said. “a quick look at the Nature Play website opens up a wealth of budget-conscious and family-friendly active recreation ideas – from activities and events in your local area to playlists suitable for a range of natural environments. “these new playlists will fire imaginations and really get kids motivated to get outside and experience everything our environment has to offer. “the playlists, including contributions from 19 new organisations, include hundreds of ideas and activities to help get your summer holiday adventures underway across Queensland.” the Nature Play initiative has already proven popular with its Passport to an Amazing Childhood program recently celebrating the issuing of its 200,000th passport in Queensland. “I strongly encourage all Queensland families to visit the website and to also get involved in the Nature Play Queensland 30 days of summer challenge,” Mr Pitt said. “spending time engaging in outdoor activities delivers enormous benefits in terms of health, social and emotional development, and also builds resistance and creativity in our kids. “We want to promote, encourage and create more opportunities for Queenslanders to get outside, get active and improve their health and well-being.” For information visit www.natureplayqld.org.au

M
y last artICle was eerily prophetic, as we have since witnessed several super-cells carve narrow swathes of destruction through the treescapes of our plateau. Worst affected were the eucalypts, with several large specimens snapped clean off at the main trunk. the only thing you can do to prevent this happening is preemptive pruning to reduce the height/leverage and sail area presented to the wind. Many of my clients in the worst affected areas have witnessed first-hand the benefits of this pro-active tree management. again, if you have concerns about trees on your property, call me to
organise a tree assessment. On these visits, I am constantly finding things that are obvious to me as an arborist, but don’t register as significant with
the property owners. My intent is not to appear as a fearmonger, just to encourage people to be prudent when it comes to managing their trees. I am a total tree lover, and at the same time I am constantly being presented with scenarios where I am called out to scenes of devastation where trees have failed, so I try to strike a balanced middle ground between keeping the trees and keeping them safe. the riot of summer tree colour continues to roll on. One of my favourites out is the yellow-flowering Metrosiderous queenslandica, Queensland Myrtle. enjoy!

The Hinterland Times is a popular read - and we tend to receive requests far in excess of what we can publish, so it is a good idea to follow up with a phone call. Make it exclusive, we do not consider stories and images that have been sent to other publications. Send an engaging image over 500kb, normally people in it, and everyone smiling (like the Quota ladies pictured), the better the image the more prominently it will be placed. Historical photos are good too, they can be a photo of a photo. If your group recently had an article, remember we tend to favour other community groups to give as many as possible a "fair go". As a monthly, we focus more on upcoming events, and it is always more interesting to have quotes from your Hinterland spokesperson. Plus we are always happy to consider story ideas remember our office opens after January 13. The deadline is always the 25th of the month - but earlier is better, so contact Michelle at editor@hinterlandtimes.com.au.
A new year brings a reason to celebrate for the Maleny Girl Guides, as work starts in January 2017 on their hut. Now a "little blue building", it was opened in 1965 at 17 Cedar Street. Chelsea and Marilyn Large were in the Girl Guide hut when it first reopened in 2005 and here they are pictured, excited about the next stage. Leader, Leanne Large, said it has been years of applying for grants, and the club are very grateful for a successful Gambling Grant, use of Ross Hopper's container for storage, and donations from John Brown at Maleny Mitre 10. Said her daughter, Chelsea, "We'll keep the original flooring, we're told it is better than what you get nowadays, the dividing wall and foundations will stay, but everything else has to go because of the asbestos.” More grants will be required to finish the work: "We are a registered charity, please remember donations are tax deductible," smiled Leanne. Guides is back on February 1, 4-6 pm, call Leanne on 0447 239 729 to find out more.
The Hinterland Times has the advised that the current police station should be to be completed by the end of January 2017. “The current station in Maple Street has served the community well, but with population growth across the Hinterland, a new station will provide an enhanced facility for local frontline officers,” Police Minister, Bill Byrne said. “The current population is around 3,440 - but we also need to cater for the many people who come to visit. “The station will move to Macadamia Drive and will be a state-of-the-art facility with interview rooms, a holding cell, workstations, a reception area, exhibit stores, car parking, acoustic fencing and – importantly for a rural community – a driver licence issuing facility.” Assistant Commissioner, Alistair Dawson, said the new station would better support local policing operations. “A new station will allow officers to take better advantage of advances in technology to support their work.”

ALCOLM TURNBULL’S CHRISTMAS message was on the wonder of unconditional love – and boy, does he need some. Even conditional love would do – love with plenty of strings attached. But at present it appears he has the tangle, but not the affection – only grudging acceptance, if even that. The recalcitrant right is, if anything, more antagonistic than ever as the season of peace and goodwill drags on. Eric Abetz, Cory Bernardi, George Christensen and pack are baying louder than ever, and Tony Abbott, with the kind of chutzpah only he can muster, is producing homilies about the pressing need for Turnbull to unite the party. And of course beyond the bounds of the party room, the barbarians are on the march. Pauline Hanson is striding across the wilds of Queensland, with Bob Katter and the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers, not to mention the ever threatening troops of Bernardi’s Conservatives, picking up whatever scraps of loot they can find. The nightmare for Turnbull is that they somehow unite in an axis of evil to pillage not only the rural and regional Nationals, but march into the citadels of the Liberal heartland. The possibility is remote; the aspiring leaders are all megalomaniacs and would start ripping each other apart in seconds, as the renewed example of One Nation has already demonstrated, and even last week Abbott and Bernardi engaged in an undignified spat over who was really calling the shots. But even a brief alliance under the banner of whichever clay-footed idol emerged would be enough to wreak serious damage on what is left of the Australian political establishment and the consensus that somehow the centre must prevail. But these were not the headwinds to which Turnbull referred in another little sermon, this time on New Year’s Day. The worries he wanted the voters to keep in mind were not domestic – or at least not intra-party, which is where the headlines have been. And he refused to be specific about where the headwinds were coming from; all he would reveal is that there could be a few surprises. But our Prime Minister is being far too coy. As he, and every serious observer knows, the immediate
threat is coming from the east: a cloud no bigger than a dyed orange coiffure has appeared across the Pacific and Trumpery is, for the moment at least, regarded as if not entirely respectable, at least the new reality. And no one, most of all Turnbull, has the slightest idea of how to deal with it. To be fair, he is hardly the only one: the general view appears to be that the way to go is to cross your fingers and hope for the best, however unlikely that outcome might be. That is certainly what the world’s financial institutions are doing: they are optimistically bullish about Trump’s promises of tax cuts and infrastructure spending, but prefer to remain in denial about his threats to set up a new regime of protectionism, let alone the prospect of a trade war with China.
™
Netanyahu, two similarly belligerent and unpleasant leaders who are more prone to escalation of tensions, not to mention expansion of their borders, than harbingers of the peace and goodwill for Turnbull yearns. So in Australia at least we are starting the new year in the same way we finished the old one: unprepared, indecisive, slightly scared and insecure in the fervent belief that all will be well, and if it isn’t, then something will turn up. After all, we are the lucky country: Turnbull repeatedly tells us that we are the envy of the world. But even if that is true it is hardly reassuring. Being an object of envy is not the safest place to be in a restive and increasingly unpredictable global environment. And so we wait, with little conviction, for our glorious leader to reveal the blueprint for 2017: the challenges and the promises he has foreshadowed in his chat outside his harbourside mansion. The fear – the likelihood – is that they will be more of the same: jobs, growth, innovation and agility, the same trite slogans perhaps rejigged in a shinier spin. But we deserve better than that, and there are times when we have been offered it. Last weekend’s release of the 1992-93 cabinet documents reminds us of what serious government could be about. In the wake of the High Court’s Mabo decision, Paul Keating embarked on a passionate, brave and determined plan to secure native title. He was opposed fiercely by many powerful forces, including some within his own government, but he never wavered in his conviction that upholding Mabo and the wider consequences that followed it was both necessary and right. And eventually, after many weeks of tortuous negotiation, he won. Like other great reforming leaders, his career was all too brief; a couple of years later the electorate wanted someone they believed would be more relaxed and comfortable. But when Paul Keating was defeated, he died on his feet. Malcolm Turnbull is struggling to survive on his knees.
Love ™ And speaking of China, which we would much rather not, a military confrontation over the South China Sea, or, far worse, Taiwan, has been firmly on Trump’s agenda. It should be a matter of urgency for the Australian government to at least acknowledge that terrible possibility, and to attempt to prepare a plan B; the mantra that an unbreakable military alliance with Washington can accommodate friendly and profitable commercial ties with Beijing is hardly a given in the age of Trump. But Turnbull has shown no visible signs of movement. He has, of course, performed the obligatory rituals of obeisance to the incoming president, with the fervent hope – and it is no more than that – that decades of slavish obedience to Washington will be sufficient to secure the blessings of Australia from the Donald. But there are no guarantees of that: the only expressions of unconditional love the president elect has evinced are those for Russia’s Vladimir Putin and Israel’s Benjamin

IN BRIEF: Boaties encouraged to have a say on safety Queensland’s boaties are being invited to have a say on what equipment they need to carry to keep safe when they’re out on the water. Main Roads and Ports Minister Mark Bailey said Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) was carrying out a once-in-adecade review of its boating miscellaneous equipment rules. “We also understand changes in technology, vessel design and on-water activities means we have to ensure our rules reflect the requirements of contemporary boating activity,” Mr Bailey said “Submissions are welcome from public authorities, industry, interested groups and recreational boaties on what changes should be made to the standards for equipment on boats in Queensland. “Equipment may include lifejackets, fire extinguishers, flares, V sheets, liquid damped compass and navigation charts, electronic navigation devices, anchors, baling equipment, oars or paddles, and drinking water. “The miscellaneous equipment rules help boaties meet their safety obligation by recommending equipment to be carried when operating in areas such as smooth waters, or in and beyond partially smooth waters. “I encourage everyone concerned with boating including those who enjoy it for recreation to take this

opportunity to have your say.” The closing date for submissions is 20 January 2017 however there will be a further round of public consultation mid-year. Make sure you know your consumer rights Did you give or receive a Christmas gift that will need to be returned? Acting Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Stirling Hinchliffe said it was important Queenslanders knew what they are entitled to. “According to Australian Consumer Law, shoppers are entitled to a refund or replacement if an item is faulty, damaged or dangerous,” Mr Hinchliffe said. “Queenslanders should also remember that while many retailers are happy to exchange or refund items if you change your mind, they aren’t always legally obliged to. “Take the receipt with you if you need to return, replace or exchange an item, this will help streamline the process.” Mr Hinchliffe also said “No refunds on sale items” were illegal and that consumers were entitled to a refund or replacement of a faulty, damaged or dangerous product, even if they purchased the product on sale.
“If you receive a gift card, try and use it as quickly as possible to ensure you don’t let it expire and to minimise the risk of the business going into administration or liquidation,” he said. For more information on consumer and business rights and responsibilities, visit www.qld.gov.au/fairtrading
Focus on holiday memories With Christmas over for another year and New Year approaching, it’s time to keep safety top of mind when driving over the holiday period. “I urge Queenslanders to drive safely over the school holidays and the Australia Day long weekend,” Mr Bailey said. “We don’t want to see any more deaths on our roads.” “Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, every fatal crash or serious injury has a long-lasting effect on the family and friends left behind,” he said. “Plan your journey and, if you are travelling a long way, prepare to have regular rest stops to avoid fatigue. “Stick to the speed limit and never overtake in an unsafe manner. If it’s wet, drive with extra caution and if it’s flooded, forget it. “Please drive safely and ensure your holiday memories are happy ones, as we all want a great, safe start to 2017.”

A whole brand spanking new year lies ahead
O
UR COLUMNISTS, Wendy Rosenfeldt and Marisa Kliese, talk about foolproofing our New Year resolutions and urge us to live fully in 2017.
In the health sector this month, we remind you that summer is the time to protect the eyes of you and your family. It is also a great opportunity to go for that health check, and have all your prevention done for the year. Write it off. Pap smears, bowel checks, skin, blood pressure... I know the older I am, the longer my list grows!
Forget resolutions, and just be active. Make it a part of your day, like Ray Price who tells us why he has a new lease of life. And remember one of my favourite quotes from Anne of Green Gables: “Isn't it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?” ― L.M. Montgomery To a healthy, happy new year from Michelle Gilmore

Protect your eyes this summer Y
OUR EYES ARE THE only organ system where visible light can penetrate deep into your body.
The World Health Organisation say that this is compounded when there is strong ground reflection from snow, water and sand, and in summer months, levels of UV radiation are particularly high. Local optometrist, Stephen Hammond, from Maleny Optical said, "It is estimated that 80 percent of a person’s lifetime exposure to UV occurs before the age of 18. "Children are particularly susceptible to UV damage because they spend more time outdoors. For this reason it is crucial
that good eyewear protection habits start early in life. "UV rays can contribute to conditions such as cataracts (cloudiness of the lens), pterygia (overgrowth of tissue onto the cornea), cancer of the skin around the eye, macular degeneration and visible signs of premature aging.” The good news is that known complications resulting from accumulated UV exposure to your eyes can be minimised by ensuring they are adequately protected. So what can you do? The answer is simple, invest in a good quality pair of sunglasses that adhere to Australian Sunglass Standards and wear sunscreen and a hat. “A polarised sunglass lens has a unique coating that is polarised vertically to eliminate reflected light, allowing the wearer to have a clearer and more comfortable view,” explained Stephen. “Ask us also about how we can treat your regular prescription eyewear with a UV protective coating endorsed by Cancer Council Australia.” Make an appointment today for you and your family, call Maleny Optical on 5435 2733, or drop into Shop 8 Riverside Centre, 8 Maple Street, Maleny. Local Gail Chilcott is advised by Tess Presswell and Siobvan McDonald on selecting sunglasses that will protect her eyes from harmful UV radiation

What can massage really do? Muscle overuse, & incorrect posture, can build tension in our muscles. Massage can identify inconsistencies, fibrous areas, knots, inflammation, spasm, & relieve tension & free nerve pathways that may otherwise be tethered. Massage can make the connective tissue around & within your muscles more pliable, enabling the muscle to move more freely which allows flexibility to increase at the joints. Massage increases blood flow, & healthy interaction with local nerves, cleaning away debri, & circulating the nervous systems’ healing hormones. The advantage here at DYNAMIC MASSAGE is the integration of other therapies when required with other practitioners to complete the circle of care for you.
Relaxation massage - for the pure pleasure of reducing stress & muscle tension

Ayurvedic Health Advice to Suit You
Fool Proof your New Year’s Resolutions
T
HE START OF THE New Year brings with it the desire to live a better life. Traditionally we make resolutions to Wendy Rosenfeldt exercise more, have a healthier diet and maintain a good work/ life balance. As the busyness of Christmas and end of year activities are replaced by some time off and relaxation we feel better able to implement some positive changes. The first few months of the year may see us keeping our resolve but as we get further into the year and stress and busyness increase our good intensions often fall by the wayside as we drop back into bad habits. When we are stressed and even in situations of ongoing fatigue, our brain shuts down. Instead of using our prefrontal cortex we shift into using the more primitive parts of the brain that are responsible for fight or flight. This impulsive brain functioning is more likely to operate from in grained habits and subconscious patterns than from higher reasoning. When we are stressed it is much harder to sit back from situations and think ‘how would I really like to respond to this challenging situation’. Instead we are more likely to act out emotionally and later regret our words or actions. The prefrontal cortex enables us to monitor the long term effects of behaviour, making us think twice about reaching for a cigarette when we have resolved to give up smoking or yelling at our child or partner when we would really like to act in a loving way.
Transcendental Meditation strengthens this part of the brain so we are less at the mercy of effects of past experiences. Along with this development in holistic brain functioning, TM takes us to a state of rest deeper than sleep and this allows us to physically throw off tension in the physiology. If we haven’t released the stress from a past experience then we are still carrying it around in our body. You may have a person in your life that can make you feel angry just by thinking about them or a tragic event that still brings tears to your eyes when you recall it. This shows that the stress is still sitting there and impacting on your thoughts and wellbeing. The deep rest we get during TM allows us to release the stress from the event and this takes away the emotional charge of the situation. During TM we don’t go over the experience again or even know what stresses are being released, we just come out feeling better and notice that we are not so reactive to situations or people that may previously have pressed our buttons. The regular practice of Transcendental Meditation gives you the tool to achieve any of your New Year’s resolutions by enabling your mind and body to experience their full potential and be free from the baggage of the past. To find out more come to a free information session on Wednesday the 11th of January at 2pm or 7.30pm. Call Wendy 5499 9580 wendy.rosenfeldt@tm.org.au

HINTERLAND TIMES – JANUARY 2017
ASN’T 2016 A BIG YEAR both personally and planetary wise? Have you decided what will be most important to you in terms of goals for this year? How did you go fulfilling the ones you thought about this time last year? The following quote by Dr Wayne Dwyer seems like a good thing to contemplate and the start of a new year is the perfect time to do so. “Don’t die with your music (stories/talents) still inside you. Listen to your intuitive inner voice and find what passion stirs your soul” Everyone of us is an individual and each of us has something to contribute to the world that only we can bring. Yet too many of us are marching to the same tune, too many of us are head down, rushing to someplace or another so that we can stay busy and fit into the norm. And it really doesn’t matter what your norm is, what matters is the joy you feel, the love you feel, and your enthusiasm for everyday life. What really matters is, are you still learning, are you growing? Are you giving yourself time to think, to question, to go beyond what is fed to you by the media, by the
financial sector, by the health industry? Are you working and living for the promise of a better future at the cost of the present? Is technology T.V. Computers smart phones etc holding your attention rather than serving you. Are you working to pay for the things that keep you working and out of your life? Create some space just for you, breathe, and feel inside, then begin to imagine you are breathing in peace and exhaling calm. Do this for as long as it feels comfortable for you. This will reset your brain activity and help to bring you out of survival mode and back to yourself. Do this every day, it need only take a few minutes and the rewards are great. As you move through your day, check how present you really are? Gradually without reacting, begin to make the changes that will honor your own intuitive guidance and unique expression, and live fully in this amazing year. Marisa Kliese is a Clinical Member Aust. AY PRICE IS NOT your typical gym junkie. Not that long ago Ray, age 66, had a walking stick, and found it difficult to get out of bed.
He was diagnosed with diabetes, attended sessions with an exercise physiologist and wanted to follow up at a gym, but couldn’t find one where he felt comfortable. Ray attended a talk held at The Range Community Gym at Mapleton about the benefits of strength training on longterm physical and mental health. He joined the gym the next week. Ray said, “The gym is not like other gyms, it is very welcoming whatever shape you are in. You don’t have to be fit before you get there.” These days, Ray has lost the walking stick, his blood sugar levels are normal and he has a new lease of life. “I am still amazed that you can lift weights and still build muscle even into your nineties. It is not as hard as people would believe,” he said. The gym also offers courses such as “Lift for Life” for older adults, an “8 Week Weight Loss Challenge” and an “8 Week Self Defence Course”.
