MARCH 2015

Fine food, wild weather, masses of music and wonderful women!

ATERFALLS ARE FLOWING and tanks should be brimming after ex-cyclone Marcia swept through the region. The hinterland was relatively lucky compared to up North - our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected here and afar. There are some remarkable people about. I have been fortunate to meet many last month who have inspired me. Members of the Mapleton Bowls Club are on a winner - I would love to sample one of their Friday dinners. So are the drivers of the Kenilworth Cheese, Wine and Food Fest, and the beetroot-loving CWA ladies (it's their produce of the year). Thanks for all the story suggestions, please keep them rolling in.

Our features cover birth, violence, war and song. They focus on some powerful women, working consistently each in their own arena. Perfect stories for International Women's Day on March 8. We also write about a group of men quietly leading other men away from violence, into respect. You will read about how music soothes and rallies during war, and helps us to cope with everyday. If music’s your poison, Creative Cuts has plenty of opportunities for fixes from Chad Morgan to a Piano Trio. Or perhaps travel is your balm? My foot itches whenever I read about each Hinterland Adventurer. Hearing 'first hand' about Machu Pichu, Irish caravans and seeing the Northern Lights fuels my wanderlust.

It's laying dormant, fed with local offerings, as we focus on senior schooling and weekend sports. Only eight more years before our youngest leaves the nest. As our eldest is entering year 12, I have no wish to speed up those years. Just like the characters in J.K. Rowling's The Casual Vacancy: " ...the way tiny ghosts of your living children haunted your heart; they could never know, and would hate it if they did, how their growing was a constant bereavement.” But no need to be glum, make yourself a cuppa and enjoy the read! Until next month, Michelle Gilmore editor@hinterlandtimes.com.au

Schools unite in F

OR THE FIRST TIME Maleny State School and The River School will come together to celebrate Harmony Day this year. This day is celebrated all over Australia on March 21 and is based on the theme that “We All Belong.” Students from both schools will be involved in a number of activities, including creating artwork for an exhibition in the town library. This will be on display for the whole month of April. Their piece of work must reflect an important message based on inclusion or celebrating cultural diversity. Two classes from both schools will also work together with Stephanie Aridge, a singer from the Sweet Chilli Choir, who has kindly volunteered her time to teach the students three songs. On March 19 the students will come together in the main street of Maleny to present their songs to the community. In addition, students will also make peace beads from recycled paper to create two Harmony bracelets, one to keep and one to give to someone, as a way of celebrating inclusion.

Students and teachers at Chevallum State School heard how hinterland schools were coming to together to celebrate Harmony Day. They were keen to support the project by extending the hand of friendship through the making of beads and bracelets to share. Bracelets are also being made in Nauru Detention Centre, by the children there. This younger generation has a growing desire to be part of something positive, which gives us great hope for a fair and compassionate Australia in the future.

L MUSIC PLAY ET THE

by Victoria McGuin

Recently, Victoria McGuin was invited to the home of a fascinating musician – Bevan Christensen. Many local readers may know of Bevan, but for those who don’t, it’s time to introduce the recipient of the 2015 Montville Lifetime Citizen of the Year Award. Incidentally, he turns 95 this June.

EVAN IS COMMUNITY spirit personified. He was recently awarded the Order of Australia medal (OAM), civil division, for his service to the Freemasons as an organist, his general community work and playing music. His Montville Lifetime Citizen of the Year Award was along similar lines: for his community work with the Montville Village Association and other local groups. A little while ago, Bevan came up with the idea of “A Bevan in his WWII Lieutenant’s uniform Tribute to the Anzacs” concert, a centenary commemorative project with the Mapleton RSL, to be performed by the Mapleton Choir and Friends in April. I asked Bevan about his family’s connections to music and war, as both have clearly had an impact. “My father, Poul Daniel Christensen, was a musician in World War I; he played E flat bass tuba in the 15th Battalion band. The musicians were highly valued and often used as stretcher bearers to keep them from the frontline.” “My paternal great-grandfather, Johan Daniel Schwarz, was a professional musician and conductor in Denmark. So for me, it was inevitable.” When Bevan was young he tried learning the violin. “But Dad didn’t want ‘that squawking thing,’ so Mum suggested the mandolin.” Meanwhile his sister was learning the piano, under mild duress. “I tried it and I was better,” Bevan admitted. Members of the 15th Battalion band, P.D. Christensen in front row, third from left After five years he turned to playing the cornet in a brass band, “to please Dad”; then the side drum at cadets. Next came the rhythm guitar and ukulele – with the piano a constant in the background. “In 1940 I enlisted as a soldier in the 2nd Australian Imperial Force, but music followed me around. In the Middle East, the Division had a concert party, and I remember playing a few chords,” he said modestly. “Once, back in Adelaide, we were engaged by the officers at Woodside Camp to play for a dance. The band kept being plied with alcohol, and we left one musician tooting away by himself on stage. When I went to apologise the next day the officer said, ‘The music was wonderful!’ which made me wonder how much the officers had had!’” In 1948, Bevan married Val, a nurse and an accomplished pianist. “She never liked to play though; she was put off by all the exams.” After many years in Brisbane, where they had three Staff Nurse, Victoria Christensen, (second from left) ready to board HMAT Orsova daughters, they visited Nambour for the

Next, he showed me a black and white image of his aunt, Victoria, in her nurse’s uniform, about to board the HMAT Orsova. “A top surgeon once said her hair was like a shiny sovereign.” Nurse Victoria served first Australian Auxiliary Hospitals in England. Apparently seconded to the British Army, she served in Bombay from the war’s end to July 1919. There was also a portrait of his handsome uncle, Victor, who was only 22 when he was killed in action in 1917. Victor has no known grave, but his name is on the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing in Belgium. His eldest uncle, Andrew, was the last of the family to join up in June 1916. He suffered a major leg wound which left him with a lifelong limp. After the war Andrew bought a sugar cane farm at Nikenbah. I asked Bevan if the war experience affected him and his own family as he grew up. “Not really…I had an ordinary childhood. We were a pretty normal family,” he smiled. And this is the truth of it. Thousands of “normal” families dealt with love, loss and bravery during World War I and II. In Bevan’s case, he also cheered people up and helped them heal through music. He still does.

Probus Club and took a drive up the mountain. “We pulled up in Montville and there was a real estate place; so we went for a look.” A year later they were happily ensconced in Flaxton. The Tribute to the Anzacs concert is extremely important to Bevan: to demonstrate gratitude for all those who fought, but also to remember the role music has played lifting peoples’ spirits throughout the wars. A particular favourite song is The Rose of No Man’s Land, which is dedicated to all the nurses. Bevan broke into song and I could see why he loves it so. Bevan recalled the power of music as the men were route marching back to training camp, “They were all exhausted; they could hardly walk. Then the band met them half a kilometre from camp and they all started marching again!” We looked through photographs of the family, old and new. The most recent depicts a huge gathering, with Bevan in the centre. “I have eight grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren!”

The Mapleton Choir and Friends will be performing their Tribute to the Anzacs concert on Sunday, April 12 at 2.30pm. All tickets $15 (school-aged $5). Bookings can be made on 5445 7016 (Dane) or 5478 6276 (John) and the Mapleton post office. Booking is strongly recommended as there is limited seating.

The

Maleny Community

Men’s House

Michael Wearing tends the permaculture garden

by Dale Jacobsen

Traditionally, men don’t talk, they ‘do’, or so we often hear. Dale Jacobsen went to meet Michael Wearing at The Men’s House, who has found that men actually need to do both.

M

EN, WOMEN and children, families and outcasts— they all play a part in our community. There are those who, perhaps because of psychological and emotional disturbances, are cut off from family and friends with no place to turn. Twenty-two years ago Michael Wearing found himself in just this position. Suffering post-traumatic stress, chronic depression and other health issues from his time in Vietnam (and coming to terms with his father’s suicide) Michael approached a local men’s group. “They were doing great stuff but they were a closed group, said Michael. “I started doing my own research. I was sitting in the Upfront Club reading Manhood when I realised that most men don’t have a life. Eighteen years ago Michael teamed up with friend John Fox (also undergoing emotional trauma) and decided to open his home as a space for men and youth for safe timeout to develop emotionally. “Our primary focus is the prevention of violence; both to ourselves and others, explains Michael. “We help men develop emotional intelligence and personal courage. We model ourselves on traditional tribes. You can’t teach manhood, you have to show it. Michael, a fully-initiated man of the Yuin Nation, has learnt much from his Koori brothers: the need to be real with

himself; to be honest and able to share a story; the importance of walking in the bush, sitting by a stream— alone and with other men. “Too many men grow into ‘blokes’: big boys who don’t take responsibility for themselves and their actions. All too often, they turn to drugs or alcohol and abuse. "We help men to stop being violent and grow out of their fear of themselves. To respect women by learning to respect themselves." The Men’s House has been a temporary home for many souls experiencing life and emotional growth issues, especially when dealing with past wounds. One young man told me: “I found a home in the House during the most difficult challenge of my life. Michael, with a beard, attire, and manner more befitting a medieval wizard than a landlord or therapist, placed his hands on my stomach and back and told me to breath deeply. I am deeply grateful for my time in the House, and for Michael Wearing personally. “We don’t take in anyone who is still using drugs or is dependent on alcohol, said Michael. “They have to be in recovery. They have to do their bit to help themselves. This can be confronting at times, but we focus on Initiation into Manhood and the Mystery of the Spirit of Men. Gradually, they find their way out of the fog. In return, they donate

money and/or their labour skills, wisdom, time or simply their metta (love).” A few years ago, the premises in Fig Street was placed on the market. The group had first option to purchase, but were unable to raise the funds. To their surprise and eternal gratitude a local benefactor purchased the house and handed it over for peppercorn rent with no lease and no time limit. Rob Outridge of Maleny SupaIGA has also supported the Men’s House from the start with free food on an ‘as required’ basis. Currently, there is sleeping for nine people —all funding is by donation and, using Michael’s pension, they get by—but they have a dream. “Our plan is to raise the house to provide more accommodation, a meeting room and workshop space underneath, and add a deck with toilet and shower facilities below.” And it’s not just for men. When I arrived there were women all over the place, laughing, sharing a cuppa. Michael says you can’t have a men’s house without women; they bring balance. It also serves as a temporary safe-haven for local women experiencing violence, and for mediated communications between couples. Vera Wearing, who lives onsite, plays a very important support role for the women. “We share home-cooked, wholesome meals. We know how high one can rise up after a good meal, a hot cuppa, an honest chat and even a hug,” said Michael. Early this year, Maleny and the Men’s House were saddened with loss. “Rhett was a beautiful, wonderful young man who wouldn’t fit into the normal,” said Michael. “If he belonged in a traditional tribe, he would be set aside to be with the kids, whom he loved; he would be revered as special." "At his wake, I implored the men to talk to each other about emotion. For God’s sake, let Rhett’s life choice count for something.” There are moves afoot to rename The Maleny Community Men’s House ‘Rhett’s House’ in his honour. Michael is passionate about helping his brothers understand what it means to be a man. “It’s my life’s work, and you know that it’s your life’s work, because you enjoy it. My reward is the shining light in their eyes when they finally get it!”

Excerpt from the poem To The Men by Michael Laughing Wolf Love, compassion, truth, integrity, honour and respect are not empty words. Give these words meaning, lest our own ignorance stop us. Speak your truth with other men. Listen to the children. Learn what their knowing is and share your knowing. Own your own pain, it sets you free when there is nothing left to lose. This is the age of miracles; look deep inside for your courage and fight.

Fieen years and ...no day is ever the same! by Jenny Hawke

Margaret Lamb with children currently attending Range Kindy: Zyah, Maddie, Veyda, Charlie

The theme for International Women’s Day on March 8 is “Make it Happen”. Jenny Hawke says the “amazing and much-loved” Margaret Lamb is the backbone of the Range Kindy, making it happen for hundreds of hinterland littlies, and their families, for the last 15 years.

RESIDEN T OF THE RANGE Community Kindergarten at Mapleton, Treena English has had both of her children go through the Range Kindy with teacher Margaret Lamb. “The Range Kindy was recommended to me by my sister-in-law. She said Margaret was so wonderful with the children that she would volunteer as a helper, just to watch Margaret deal with everyday goings on and those more trying moments." "She referred to Margaret’s approach as ‘magic in action’. I just had to send my children to the kindy after hearing that and I haven’t been disappointed!” No doubt that 'magic in action' was honed with Margaret's own family - four kids and four stepkids about the same age. "There are lots of birthdays. Some say it is like the Brady Bunch. But I tell them 'I didn’t have Alice!'” "When my youngest was eleven, I married Peter. But we’ve never had everyone living at home all at once." Now her children range from 22 to 30 years old. They got together for the first time last month - someone has always been overseas. "I do love to travel. The children have given us a

P

destination. I had a son in China, a wedding in Canada and two boys in London. Every couple of years we try to go overseas." The step-grandma's other passion is teaching children. “Early Childhood teachers have a holistic perspective of learning and teaching – one that promotes social, emotional, physical and cognitive well being, in an environment where children can investigate, explore materials and ideas through play and interactions with others." "I hope that as children leave the kindy and head to prep that they are learners—wanting to learn more, confident in their ability to learn and find answers, and not afraid to ask questions,” adds Margaret. Margaret has been in early childhood education since the 1980s. “I graduated from Brisbane Kindergarten Teachers College and I’ve been the director of various kindergartens." "I was fortunate enough to spend ten years at home with my children when they were young before coming back to teaching part-time and then eventually full-time again”, says Margaret. “I started at the Range Kindy at Mapleton in 2001, and

here I am still—getting a kick out of seeing whole families come through the kindy." Over the years the kindergarten community has replaced the playground, renovated the front of the kindy, built in several areas for waterproofing, added vegetable gardens and a digging patch - and more! Margaret says that while the kindy has changed to look at, the community spirit is consistent. “Families seem to really value that this is a true community organisation, with its focus on the children and families. “Each year there are such motivated volunteer management committee members that want to ‘make their mark’ on our wonderful community asset." Unfortunately, government-funding changes have dramatically changed her role. “Funding changes have seen us move to being a small business which has its challenges, because we keep the focus on providing quality early childhood education for the children of Mapleton and surrounds, and not the mighty dollar”, says Margaret. Research now more than ever emphasises the importance of the early years for children, and Margaret has been keen to keep up with new developments and keep her formal qualifications relevant and use them in a practical way at kindy. “I think we should cling to the value of a play-based curriculum as tight as we can. It really is the initial building block for all the learning that comes along in the formal education years. And we can never underestimate time spent expressing creatively. Play is the perfect activity for developing versatility, imagination, inventiveness, risk-taking, creativity and that all-important sense of confidently knowing who you are,” says Margaret.

Margaret and the Kindy class at the local Doctor visit, 2003

Ranger Margaret with assistant, Anne Paice ( now retired) and Lyndi Gwillim (who still works part-time) at an end of term ‘Bush Party’ for families at the Kindy in 2004 Karen Lynch is a primary school teacher; so knows the value of good early-years care. “Margaret cared not only for all five of our children’s learning by laying the foundations for their future schooling, but also for their social and emotional development as well. "She took the time to get to know each of our children personally and nurture them as individuals.” That's impressive considering there have been more than 600 students in the 15 years! "I think that Margaret's calm, gentle but professional manner is the reason why The Range Community Kindy has such a great reputation. She holds a very special place in our hearts,” Karen adds. When asked if she has any tips for parents with small children, Margaret recommends to, “Believe in your knowledge and insight of your child… and trust you are doing a great job!” For anyone starting out in the field of early childhood education she advises, “Once you get into the theory of it all you’ll find it fascinating… and once you get out into the field remember to mix all that with a lot of common sense and a sense of humour. Good luck!” Margaret genuinely loves her job and says that no day is ever the same “There is always a reason to have a laugh and children are honest, so that keeps me real.” She remains humble though and won’t take all the credit for the Range Kindy’s popularity. Margaret adds “I can honestly say I have the best co-workers around—thanks Lauri, Lyndi, Renee, Tara and Miss Benny.”

Dancing to the beat of their own drum Nathaniel Combs and Bec Mount are a dedicated, young couple who have manage to turn their passion for West African drumming and dancing into a full-time, rewarding enterprise. The duo from Palmwoods talk about how it began and balancing their business with their young family.

by Chariot Pascoe

INDFUL OF THE subdued energy in the hall, Nathaniel Combs sits down on a chair behind his djembe drum, greeting the circle of people in front of him, all who have done the same. He taps his drum a few times as if to greet it too and the others automatically follow, quickly finding out the type of sound their instrument makes. Nathaniel announces the rhythm the class will learn but invites everyone to warm up their hands on the drums. In this circle sits council workers, teachers, nurses, graphic designers and grandparents. Within about five minutes of following Nathaniel’s example, everyone finds their beat. “People often come into the class looking very tense and with busy minds,” Nathaniel says. “By the end of the class, their bodies are relaxed, they are smiling and their minds seem still. Sometimes after class when I say, ‘Okay, thanks everyone, see you next week’, nobody moves. Drumming connects people to each other and themselves.” Adults seem to approach the drum with intrigue and perhaps a level of fear they will be judged on their playing. Children simply hit it with wild abandon. “Kids are great fun, and if you can capture them it is

incredible rewarding,” Nathaniel says. “When I give them the drums they all start playing, hands going for it – it’s like a wave you can't stop, you can only wait for it to reach the shore. Adults are similar really but they start in a different place and I have to get them off shore and into the water.” The true beauty of this ancient instrument is anyone can play it. However, to possess the knack to memorise and play rhythms handed down from generation to generation in the Griot culture of West-Africa is something altogether unique. Nathaniel is an expert in that department. Nathaniel grew up in the small town of Waikari on the South Island of New Zealand. “I was fortunate that my school had a great music program and I played drum kit, harp, recorder and sang in the choir.” It was during a school visit by Guinean master percussionist and dancer Epizo Bangoura that the 13-yearold Nathaniel first saw a djembe. “He asked if anyone wanted to play and I jumped out of my seat,” he says. “That first experience of the djembe, hearing the depth of the bass and the cracking slap sound, was so powerful. It hooked me straight away.” He started a tribal percussion band, and studied with

2011 and ended up leaving early but still fell in love with the place.” “Everyone thought we were crazy, leaving a city of possibilities to the ‘country’ and start the business ‘Rhythm Culture’ – and that is exactly what we did,” she says. “We both really believe in ‘do what you really love and the rest will follow’.” the scenes, Behind organiser Bec or ‘Nathaniel’s diary’ also co-ordinates The African Co-op, a dance class for fitness and fun. When Nathaniel is not performing with Rhythm Culture or The Hayden Hack Infusion, he keeps the cogs turning with weekly classes, workshops, private tutoring, corporate and private events. Nathaniel says the best part about working with Bec is they can laugh, create and be together all the time. “It has taken some fine tuning but we both know who does what best and enjoy doing what we can,” Nathaniel says. “A family business can be a bit of a beast sometimes, we have clear times and spaces where it can live, be fed and other times and spaces that are slobber and hair-free.” The drum to him remains an honoured gift where he finds strength and power, calm and clarity. “When I can’t understand what I’m feeling or feel bound up in a way, I can play drums or music and know I will feel better and have a new perspective.” For more information: www.rhythmculture.com.au or phone 0434 585 992.

mentors overseas and in Melbourne. It was here he met his partner. Bec is from Byron Bay and was also exploring the African culture through dance. She remembers him from that first night and how mesmerised by the drums he looked. “We didn’t speak a word to each other until about two years later at a different drumming class,” she says. “I was walking home and he was walking the same way. He carried a djembe on his back. I remember thinking how carefree he seemed.” When their first son Elijah was born in 2010, Melbourne lost its allure and they were eager to move to a place closer to nature with a strong sense of community. “We got a map and Bec closed her eyes and put her finger on it and it landed on Maleny,” Nathaniel says. “We didn’t know anyone or anything about it so we thought let’s go check it out. CALL THE MIDWIFE Terri Schaumberg in her clinic at the Maleny Holistic Health Centre

Homebirth or hospital? Midwife Terri Schaumberg feels that midwifery-led care in the local community is the best solution for expectant mothers.

by Dale Jacobsen

T

ERRI SCHAUMBERG believes the creation and birth of a baby is a miracle. When she became a midwife she realised she had something special to offer women to protect the sacred space—not just for women and the baby being born, but also for their family and the community in which they live. She aims to help women have a healthy pregnancy and natural birth experience. A midwifery-led model of care assumes that pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period are normal life events for a mother and her baby. It is woman-centred and based on continuity of care in monitoring the physical, psychological, spiritual and social well being of the woman and family through the childbearing cycle. “Women are perfectly designed for carrying a baby and giving birth,” said Terri. “When we start to medicalise the process, we may overthink and move away from the natural instinctiveness that women can embrace during their journey. I encourage women to discover the raw strength within them to create the space to have the best birth experience possible.”

There are many options available to women and families, but perhaps people may not be aware the some midwives are Medicare eligible. While at present there is no Medicare rebate for homebirth, antenatal and postnatal care are covered. Terri usually bulk-bills initial and discharge consultations and offers rebates for services to families. Terri explains: “Midwives have a unique opportunity to provide care across the whole spectrum: providing pregnancy testing; blood tests; requesting scans; and referrals when intervention is required or requested. Women are asked to have a referral from their GP and the woman would have continuity of care throughout her pregnancy, for the birth and for six weeks after the birth”. Terri believes the most positive outcomes for mums and babies occur when they feel empowered and at peace with their birth. “Some see that, when the birth event is not influenced by medication or hospital ritual, a woman can experience directly her own strength, her power, her courage, her determination, as well as her ability to surrender as she lets herself adapt to the rhythm and demands of birth. Women need to feel comfortable and safe.” Terri qualified as a nurse in a country hospital before training as a midwife at the Brisbane Royal Women’s hospital in 1985. Later, she completed an undergraduate Nursing Science degree at James Cook University and her Master of Midwifery at the University of the Sunshine Coast, where she

During the aerial inspections, the helicopter will fly at a low level along our transmission lines. In some instances the helicopter will pause momentarily for closer inspection. We aim to be as quick and non-disruptive as possible, but there is the potential for some noise during the inspection. Low-flying helicopters also have the potential to startle some livestock.

Big praise for “Little May” by Victoria McGuin

Rich and Hannah Hayes

T

HERE'S A WELCOME addition in Montville’s Main Street: the bright and stylish café, Little May Espresso. The owners of Little May are Rich and Hannah Hayes, who moved to Flaxton from Port Douglas with their two boys in 2012. “Rich had been working as executive chef at Nautilus, and we ran a private dining company,” Hannah explains. “We decided to be nearer our families, so Rich sent his CV to Cameron Matthews at The Long Apron on Spicers Clovelly Estate.” Within two weeks of his interview, Rich was working as sous-chef at Clovelly, where he remained for three years until his own personal opportunity knocked. “We both dreamed of having our own place,” smiles Hannah, “and we fell in love with this building.” The space is breezy, comfortable and with fresh, organic, local produce used as much as possible. And for coffee aficionados, there is a tempting choice of blended or single origin coffees. Artists from the area display their work for sale, which varies monthly. Western Avenue Floral Design provide striking, unusual arrangements and local builder/sculptor Rod Nash made the bench tops and herb wall. “We really appreciate the support of the locals; that’s why we’re here. I love that the space brings people together. “Quite often one person comes in and then another will pop in and go, ‘Oh, hi!’, and an impromptu catch up begins.” Little May has been a labour of love. Hannah designed the venue and “bounced ideas” off Rich, who created the sumptuous, yet affordable menu of “real food”, and the boys enjoyed the “taste testing” along the way! Having sampled a cappuccino and caramel custard tart (with espresso cream and banana jam), I would happily “taste test” there every day myself. 14

The annual RSPCA gourmet food and wine evening, hosted by Ron and Helen Geyl’s Poets Café, has taken on a new feel. Always a dedicated fundraiser to support the work of the RSPCA Qld, the event has become an institution in Montville and is now in its tenth year! These days its impact has become even more important to the charity, due to demands for the RSPCA’ s services rising every year. “We are relying more and more on activities like this and without the generosity of Ron and Helen and communities like Montville, we simply can’t survive and ultimately, of course, it’s the animals that suffer,” said RSPCA Qld spokesman Michael Beatty. The event will be introduced by Michael Beatty and the special guest speaker will be Dr Tania Bishop, RSPCA Qld’s Senior Wildlife Veterinarian. For a night of culinary delights, donated by Ron and Helen, drinks and great company, it promises to be an enjoyable way to help the animals. All enquiries to events@rspcaqld.org.au or 3426 9943

ECRETS ON THE LAKE Chef Erik Van Alphen with happy customers after a five course gourmet lunch with matching wines. What a way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

HINTERLAND TIMES – MARCH 2015

Eumundi Beef on the Eumundi Kenilworth Road will be a hive of activity on Earth Hour night – Saturday March 28 – with a special community event, Plates in a Paddock. Starting at 5pm, biodynamic paddocks will be transformed into a million star dining experience, with 190 patrons enjoying a three-course meal of locally sourced food,

prepared by some of the region’s best chefs. “Earth Hour is a celebration of the fact that all of us have the power to create action on climate change, “ says Anna Rose, Earth Hour National Manager. “Our much-loved farmers are the custodians of the nation’s food bowl and need our support to minimise the harm carbon pollution is having on the supply of fresh food that we are so lucky to enjoy in Australia.” For more information about the event and Earth Hour, go to http://www.scecaction.org.au/plates_in_a_paddock or www.earthhour.org.au.

A long lunch The Rotary Club of Eumundi is proud to take the lead on one of the most significant fundraisers for the Katie Rose Hospice in Doonan, the Eumundi Summer-All-Over Lunch, which will be held on Sunday March 22, 2015. Commencing at 11.30am under the fig trees of the famous Original Eumundi Markets, there will be a fabulous two-course meal, prepared by well-known local chefs Max Porter and Peter Wolfe, who come together as “Old Dogs, New Trix”. BYO soft drinks and alcohol will allow guests their own choices for refreshment, and a limited bar of wine and beer will be available. Entertainment will be provided by The Doo Wop Dolls - a unique three-part harmony group, with prizes and auctions to further support the event. Bookings via the website, www.redchair.com.au/red-e-tix and for other enquiries and cash bookings contact Eumundi Rotary on 0421 475 497.

HIS EASTER, come and join in the fun at Kenilworth's very own food festival. Coordinator, Graeme White, is passionate about the local produce, particularly bush foods. "Our Imbil butcher will create sausages flavoured with our Aussie bush spices and, with our local bacon, plus eggs from Cambroon, the committee are cooking up a gourmet Mary Valley BBQ breakfast." The breakfast helps fund next year's event. "We just want to get the word out there." Graeme said. "It is not a fundraiser, or a fete. Our festival celebrates our delicious produce from the Mary Valley."

Coordinator Graeme White and Committee Member and Nina Cox invite you to the 2015 Kenilworth Cheese, Wine & Food Fest

And the wine? There's not a lot of wine produced locally, but it goes with the cheese! The festival is located in the town park and across the road at the Cheese Factory. (Worth the visit just for the choc cherry ice cream - although our kids will argue they stop for the chocolate mousse or the passionfruit yoghurt.) "It brings a nice lot of people to town. It's fun," says Graeme. "With the Cheese Rolling Competition and the Cheester Egg Hunt, pony rides and the petting zoo baby animals - there's lots for the many families who make a day of it." Maleny duo and roving entertainers, Ruba Tuba, will perform around the festival area and renowned chef, Peter Wolfe from Cedar Creek Bush Foods, delivers popular cooking demonstrations. You will find a delicious selection of fine food and fare: From near the head of the Mary River, Crystal Water Bakery famous sourdough bread; Maleny Avocado Oil; macadamias, coffee, fruit and cuisines from around the world - and don't forget Kenilworth's blessed Red Malling! Kenilworth Cheese, Wine & Food Fest was one positive to come out of the Traveston Dam debacle. Now in its seventh year, it looks like it is here to stay. Entry is free, see you there Easter Saturday, April 4, 7.00am -4.00pm. For more details: www.kenilworth foodfest.org.au

Two bridges and another board walk under construction T

Brian and Margaret Murphy agreed the new boardwalk was a real asset to town

HE FIRST STAGE of the Maleny Riverside Boardwalk Project is complete, but were you wondering when the path would open? Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said, "Work is continuing on two more pedestrian bridges across wetlands and the Reynolds Board Circuit near Gardner’s Falls. The latter was created due to difficult terrain. "The vital pedestrian and cycle link to the Maleny Community Precinct is due to be complete in early June." If you haven't seen it yet, make the effort and enjoy the views over Obi Obi Creek.

In Mapleton upon the hill Michelle Gilmore thought she was dropping in to find out about a new bowls green. But when she met with half a dozen members from Mapleton Bowls Club, she heard a whole lot more!

"You won? No we merely travelled here to play, Lost then, I take is what you say? Beauty and friendship, cakes and tarts What could we lose, except our hearts. My bowls are stowed behind the door Hat, shoes and socks upon the floor My body’s home, but my heart is still. In Mapleton upon the hill."

ere ends tHe poeM that has pride of place in the Mapleton Bowls clubhouse - you will find it framed and still epitomising all that the members hold dear, 60 years later. Barry Blunden wrote the four stanzas in the 1950s. It was given to his friend, John Major, a current member of Mapleton Bowls Club. the constitution reflects ‘good fellowship’ and community as much as bowls. the thirty-year-old clubhouse is home to art classes, craft and mahjong once a week, probus once a month and MdCA (Mapleton district Community Association) meetings - there are roughly “370 people-visits” each week. Underneath is the Mapleton Gymnasium, open five times per week. John says, "there is a bigger membership in the gym than the bowls club, so we'll get bought out shortly!" ex-president (off and on) and green keeper, Lynden Bateman, says, "At happy hour, up here, people get together. the bar is open six days, from four to six, or later if Brian is on." "I go to seven o'clock, 'cause I have some regulars," Brian explains. John is very proud of the cooks, "the ladies do a marvellous job in the kitchen. But.... I must tell you this. the first time I ever played bowls, they put me with sandra and we won." "He happened to get me on a good day!" sandra Jordan is quick to reply. - WHEN AND WHY IS IT NEEDED? over 100 in the club. It's all done by volunteers, including meals every second Friday, open to the public. "If there are visiting bowlers - 64 on the green, that's 64 meals!" Lynden says there are a lot of stories he could tell. "Carl ensby was one of the original members of the club. When I arrived in 1978, the five rink green had blue couch turf . to fertilise it, he would bring a trailer load of fresh chicken poo from his backyard coop and throw it on the green.”. He laughs as he remembers, "the green would be covered in feathers!" Brian smiles too, "In the centre of the green, there was a round hole with a pot filled with weed killer. As he played, if he saw a weed, he would drip it on!" the club's current greenkeeper, Geoff steel, will hopefully not need to be so diligent with his brand new green. the extensive works are thanks to a grant from the Queensland Government, assisted through the sunshine Coast Council Grants program. the club members are also grateful to Geoff, project contractor rori Holland and volunteers, plus everyone who helped celebrate. Back in the 50s, where some remember supping in a tent for afternoon tea, Barry's poem does tell:

Happy hour: Jeffrey Jordan, Rob Shoyer, Brian Read, Lynden Bateman, Sandra Jordan and John Major

"The bar--- there is no bar at all But none have died of thirst, or ever will In Mapleton upon the hill." "the club was really small - a wooden hut with besser block male and female toilets." Brian recalls. "there was no phone, no fridge. We'd visit the pub to get our half dozen tallies for after the game. For afternoon tea you had soggy sweet biscuits and powdered milk in your tea. Amidst a thousand dairies, we were drinking powdered milk!" rob, Jeffrey and all the members agree that they want to attract more bowlers. Lynden Bateman quips, "We were young kids when we started, I was about 40." the average membership age has grown with him. they have worked with the schools and the local conference centre, run barefoot bowls and recognise that they may need to look at modern options, like 20/20 (similar to cricket) to recruit younger players. the aim of the $100,000 Green Upgrade project is to increase Queenslanders participation in sport and recreation activities. And why wouldn't you want to play at this hub of the community, where bowlers are regularly hosted from all over Australia and the folk are so friendly? You can read the poem in its entirety on the Ht website, or better still pop into the Mapleton Bowls Club and look up on their wall. "Before you bowl, just stand and gaze, Across the miles of purple haze Beach, hamlet, farm and smoking mill Drifting shower and azure hill Sunshine and shadow, the muted town And range and valley spreading down, You will remember, where’er you be, The silver river, the somber sea Orchard and field , in beauty lying still, ‘Neath Mapleton upon the hill." While developing a garden together over the last 23 years at “the shambles” at Montville, kyleigh and dr. Michael simpson have expanded their interest by writing their sixth illustrated gardening book. their beautifully illustrated book, A Garden Forever, Dreams, Stories, Heritage, History, has been written for gardeners, people with an interest in local history and lovers of colourful, attractive, hardcover books. A Garden Forever documents the story of a Montville garden from the time before european settlement, through the time of selection, clearance and agriculture, to the last 23 years of ornamental gardening at “the shambles”. the timelines and events described in A Garden Forever run parallel to the evolution of garden making during the beginnings of european settlement in Australia, and especially Queensland. “the shambles” is a collectors garden, and the substance of such a garden required inclusion of the complete, illustrated inventory of the thousands of plants within it. Coins for Abbott o

Montville Art Gallery March 2015

“Nature’s Uncertainty Richard Bogusz

R

ICHARD BOGUSZ WAS BORN in Europe in 1947. He came to Australia as a five year old. On leaving school he joined the computer industry but decided to become full time professional artist whilst still in his early twenties. “I committed myself to a way of life from which there was no return. For the next fourteen years, I entered shows, won awards and exhibited widely. Then, in 1986, I felt I needed to escape the hectic southern art world. I headed north finally settling just out of Townsville. The carefree lifestyle and the vibrant colours of the tropics were just what I needed to inspire me. After fifteen years of this carefree life, I felt my ideas were beginning to dry up and it was time for a major change. In 2001, my family and I, moved to Brisbane, Richard explained. “The move south really invigorated me. I experimented with different styles but kept returning to my narrative works but with a more sophisticated approach demanding a deeper and more questioning response from the viewer. Being a full-time artist for almost forty five years has been a curiously indulgent experience mixed with excitation and irritation. Gratefully, the angst for acceptance by the public is now a distant memory replaced by a determination to produce what I do naturally. This has always yielded the best outcome in both mental attitude and hence my paintings. It allows the equivocal, the uncertainty of nature, to be unconsciously incorporated in my paintings. Open daily from 10 to 5, Montville Art Gallery is located at 138 Main Street, Montville, opposite the Village Green. Commencing on March 1st, Richard’s paintings will be featured under “Exhibitions on the gallery’s website

nCe More oUr prime Minister has hit the international headlines, and once more for all the wrong reasons. It is not unusual for tony Abbott to find himself an object of ridicule – it happens regularly in Australia, and his gaffes have made him a favourite target of irreverent talk shows overseas, especially in the United states and Britain. But to find himself all over the Indonesian internet as an object of scorn and contempt is neither new nor nice. And more worryingly, it is not good-humoured satire, the kind you can laugh off. the campaign against Abbott, and by extension the country he governs, is based on anger and resentment. A sign seen in Jakarta, “Australians needs a prime minister not a shylock and drug dealer’s cousin, reveals the depth of the outrage at Abbott’s latest blooper. And of course it was a blooper, a well-intentioned but reckless overstepping of the kind Abbott has made his personal trade mark as prime Minister and even before then. He was genuinely trying to help the cause of Andrew Chan and Myuran sukumaran as the apparently remorseless path towards their executions draws ever nearer. so what went wrong? First, it was a bit of what Abbott would no doubt call plain speaking: Australia could not just ignore the impending executions and if they went ahead, Australia would feel “grievously let down. the clear implications was that there would be consequences; and while everyone, but especially the Indonesians, were considering that and wondering just what Abbott had in mind, he went back to the airwaves to note that Australia had given a billion dollars in tsunami aid just a few years ago, and perhaps Indonesia might like to reciprocate the good will. It may not have been meant as a threat, but it surely sounded like one, and Jakarta, always sensitive when it comes to what it still sees as formerly colonial powers, took it as such. Its government let fly: Indonesia was a proud and sovereign nation, and did not take kindly to threats. Julie Bishop rushed to the phone and tried to pacify the Vice president, Jusuf kalla, to assure him that there was no link between the aid and the executions, but while apparently mollified, he reportedly called the statement “most unhelpful, which it obviously was, and particularly to the hapless prisoners of kerobokan gaol. What little hope of reprieve they still entertained were dashed yet again. president Joko Widodo reiterated that the executions would go ahead, and advisers urged that the process should take place as soon as possible to end the pleas for clemency. And the backlash against what was seen as arrogance and bullying from Abbott began - first in Aceh, the island most affected by the tsunami, and then spreading across the vast and populous archipelago. It is not clear who started the movement to collect loose change to pay Abbott back for his aid, but it had a devastating impact, and if the authorities did not actually encourage it, they certainly condoned it.

some of Abbott’s remaining advocates are trying to claim that it was what Australians wanted to hear from their leader and bugger the Indonesians and the drug smugglers too; shoot the lot of them and cancel the aid, and bad luck to them. Abbott and Bishop were just playing good cop, bad cop in order to get an outcome. Which , if it were true (which it wasn’t) was precisely the problem: good cop, bad cop, is the game you play in the interrogation room when you are trying to browbeat a suspect into confessing to a crime. It is not the game you play when you are trying to elicit sympathy from a proud and fiercely independent head of state whose own interests are considerably more compelling than your own. Australia is regularly seen as an object of suspicion in Jakarta, with Abbott as a particular focus; he has never really been forgiven for his high-handed dismissal of the bugging of the phone of the former president susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and his wife and associates, nor of the stubborn refusal to countenance Indonesia’s resistance to turning back the boats of asylum seekers and the inadvertent breaches of Indonesia’s maritime borders that resulted. And before then, of course, there had been an underlying distrust engendered by Julia Gillard’s unilateral suspension of the cattle trade and, more lastingly, John Howard’s intervention in east timor. Abbott should have been super cautious; but old habits die hard. Bishop could have told him to tread carefully; she and her department had been tirelessly and quietly working through diplomatic channels, massaging potential sympathisers and concentrating on the main game: saving the fugitives from death. It may not have worked, but it was the last, best chance. Had Abbott warned them of his intentions, they would have tried to jump on him. But instead, he impetuously barged ahead, providing Widodo and his fellow hardliners the excuse – if they need one – to ignore Australia’s pleas from now on. Indonesian law, it appears, will take its course. even if Abbott were to apologise publicly to the aggrieved Widodo -- as Widodo has reportedly requested, although there is absolutely no sign that he is likely to get it – it would be too little and too late. Another captain’s call, and given the issue involved, a deadly serious one. In the end, relationship between the two countries will once again have to be papered over; the link, if only one of geography, is too important for open conflict. But that will be of little comfort to Chan and sukumaran and their families, friends and supporters, and not much for the Liberal party either. once again, Abbott has tried to shirt front the opposition in the hope that it may be persuaded to back down. once again, he has been dismissed with derision. While he is getting over it, he might ponder just what he will do with quite a lot of Indonesian coins which are on their way. perhaps me might like to purchase a simple guide to Javanese culture; or, failing that, a Bahasa version of How to Win Friends and Influence people.

A long lasting tribute for ANZAC Day Ambrosia is Youth of the Year C HrIs Brooker, from Maleny rsL sub-Branch Inc., says the practice of donating books instead of wreaths on Anzac day has occurred for many years. "the books are presented instead of wreaths. they are usually purchased by community groups and given to the schools, erowal Aged Care or Maleny Hospital." As an example, the rotary Club of Maleny allocates $100, being $50 each to Maleny state school and Maleny High school. the Club approaches the librarian of each school, advises them of the funding and requests the school purchase a book of their choice and inscribe it accordingly (presented by rotary Club of Maleny, AnZAC day 2015). "this book is then laid at the Cenotaph on AnZAC day and thereafter delivered to the school by the rsL," he says. "the school has a book it requires and it is a long-lasting tribute." Fran tickle, from Maleny High school, thinks it is a great idea. "Wreaths die and are thrown away. It is wonderful for our school and it has just become a tradition." "Books are sourced locally, like from rosettas, and we match books to organisations. Last year 14 different organisations took part." please contact one of the schools, erowal, or the hospital to organise your tribute book for 2015.

Helen Gilmour-Walsh presents Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range Youth of Year to Ambrosia Muir, who will compete on March 7 in Caloundra.

The Brain's Way of Healing: Remarkable discoveries and recoveries from the frontiers of neuroplasticity

By Norman Doidge This book is about the discovery that the human brain has its own unique way of healing. Through hopeful, astonishing stories Doidge teaches us that it is often possible to radically improve – and even cure – many conditions thought to be irreversible. From the author of ‘The Brain That Changes Itself’ that informed us that brain exercises can improve cognition and perception and that our thoughts can switch our genes on and off, altering our brain anatomy. In his new book Doidge shows how the amazing process of neuroplastic healing really works and explains how the mind, brain, and body can work together in health and healing.

Not Forgetting the Whale

Still Travelling

By John Ironmonger When a young man washes up, naked on the beach of a small Cornish seaside town, the villagers quickly rally to his rescue. But what the villagers don't know is that Joe Haak has fled the City of London fearing a worldwide collapse of civilisation, a collapse forecast by Cassie, a computer program he designed. And through all of this, let's not actually forget the whale swimming around the bay. Ironmonger takes an unusually quirky and optimistic outlook on the traditional apocalypse genre in Not Forgetting the Whale. An intimate, funny and deeply moving novel that will stay with you long after you turn the last page.

By Mal Leyland "Long before Steve Irwin and decades before the Bush Tucker Man, a pair of brothers called the Leylands bestrode the continent as pioneers of outback film making. For 30 years, their television programs attracted huge audiences." Ever the adventurer, Mal Leyland has continued to explore our beautiful and dangerous country. Still Travelling is his compelling account of a life lived to the full.

Rosetta Books is very excited to be hosting a free evening with Mal Leyland. Friday, 6th March 2015, 6pm for a 6.30pm start at the Maleny RSL

OME PEOPLE ARE VISUAL LEARNERS; some people prefer to listen or to read; some feel their way through a situation and for me, to the above I add the senses of taste and smell which can be very handy when it comes to identifying apparently similar looking plants. After all if you’re unsure if you’re looking at a Lemon Myrtle crush a leaf and the smell will confirm that you’re on the right track and if you’re unsure if you’re looking at a Stinging Tree just touch it and that will confirm that you are definitely looking at a Stinging Tree... maybe not actually, I really should thinks these things through before I write them down! Which brings me to our sense of taste, which can be a bit of a gamble as a means to identifying plants as it will help you confirm if it’s sweet or bitter, but also ... toxic. So when you think about it taste should probably be reserved for those plants that have been definitely, accurately and very correctly identified as the correct plant and at the correct state of edibility! Luckily through the generous sharing of knowledge of the original Australians we do have a wealth of known edible local flora at our finger tips to feed us on bushwalks, add to our gardens and cultivate to sate the adventurous palettes of some of us!

It’s hard to go past the Bunya Nut we discussed last month, but there are some great tastes and refreshing nibbles to add to your garden or enjoy on a walk, or these days buy from the supermarket - as we see some Australian native plants begin to be cultivated in our contemporary commercial fashion. Davidson Plums produce profuse large juicy sour fruit which are great for jams, sauces, syrups and even fresh if you fancy a true palette cleanser. Two species are readily available in our area, Davidsonia jerseyana (Nth NSW) summer fruiting and Davidsonia pruriens (NE QLD) winter fruiting. Sand Paper Figs are one of my favourites, but it can be a year or two between good crops, Ficus coronata, F. fraseri and F. opposita are all good fresh and also great for jams etc... Midyim Austromyrtus dulcis is a weeping, low growing shrub with very tasty fruit, great to nibble. Our local citrus the Round Lime Citrus australis and Finger Lime Citrus australasica (Nth NSW) have been selected for some great cultivars, definitely worth adding to the orchard. Add to this the Lillypilly’s, generally just worth a nibble, but the Riberry Syzygium luehmannii are very tasty treat when glaced. Eat Australian, be Australian, yum!

H

EAVY RAIN USUALLY LEADS to erosion of unprotected soil. Sheet erosion, gully erosion and landslip are terms often used and all result in muddy, silt-laden water in our rivers. The question is; how do we on the Blackall Range prevent or minimise soil loss when many of us live on sloping land with easily eroded soils. Landslips are regular and the Sunshine Coast Council has mapped landslip prone areas. Sheet erosion of surface soil is common. A good grass cover protects soil in open, sunny areas. Dense shrub cover lessens the physical impact of heavy rain by filtering and slowing down the drops. Preventing sheet erosion under the shade of trees is more problematic. Leaf litter will move with the water but fallen branches and coarse litter placed across the line of flow help to slow the water down catching silt and leaves. Another option is to place anchored hay bales across the line of flow. Periodic

replacement will be needed but the more the water can be slowed down, the better. Gully erosion commences where water is channelled down a slope. The gully cuts back at its head and this type of erosion needs a permanent solution. Planting the floor, adding coarse debris to slow the flow and protecting the banks may achieve this. For small developing gullies on steep land, creating a rock riffle can be the solution. Rocks of varying sizes placed across the gully and at the top slow the water. The edges are protected with ground covers that have a dense, spreading root system, or use shrubs with dense, low foliage. Slips are more difficult and vary from vertical to more gradually sloping. Deep-rooted trees planted back from the slip can soak up excess water, some tree species with a deep and stable root system may be planted across a slip, or an engineering solution may be needed. In all cases attempting prevention is much better and less costly than cure.

Ken and Sylvia: keen to go anywhere

“I

reALLY WAnt to see south America,” said ken Barker. “I’m keen to go anywhere,” answered his wife, sylvia. Inspired by tV documentaries of wildlife and stunning landscapes, last november ken and sylvia set off for a monthlong adventure of south America, taking in Buenos Aires to Argentina, torres del paine national park and a small-ship excursion among the fjords and glaciers “of the most intense blue” along coastal patagonia. they flew over rugged snow-covered mountains, travelled by train to Inca ruins and mountain lakes, slept in grand hotels and, of course, a roomy cabin on board Skorpios III. “I would like to say we roughed it,” laughed ken, “but we didn’t”. ken found a new appreciation for the Incas as he stood on the terraces of Machu pichu, a 15th-century Inca site. “It was like a research outpost where they grew plants that they brought in from the Amazon.” Top left: The glaciers were such an intense blue Bottom left: Ken felt a new respect for the Inca people as he stood on Machu Pichu

they caught a train from Cusco to Lake titicaca (3826 metres), stopping briefly at markets in a pass at 4,400 metres. “the train used to be owned by orient express,” said sylvia, “and it lived up to the quality image one has of such trains.” I asked how they coped with altitude sickness. “the pills worked fine,” said sylvia. they had plenty of opportunities to acclimatise, resting at 1,900 metres, then spending a couple of days in Cusco (2,300 metres). Apt tours, with whom ken and sylvia were travelling, sponsor schools on Lake titicaca and, by a lucky stroke, our travellers took part in a ceremony to open a new refectory. “We took a motorboat across the lake to Liquina where we were met by the villagers who bedecked us with flowers, then we proceeded to the school,” said sylvia. “they danced in the courtyard, and a little girl pulled me up to join in. It was a memorable experience.” Walking through torres del paine national park, across alpine fields of exquisite wild flowers surrounded by snowy mountains; hearing the thunder of Iguassu Falls where 275 waterfalls converge; seeing a toucan nesting outside their hotel; feeling the ice breaking before the bow of an icebreaker; landing in a Zodiac on a deserted coastline and walking to the glacier front—so many highlights. ken and sylvia are now back home in the hinterland, watching more documentaries, seeing where their next adventure will take them. This South American trip of a lifetime was planned by Maleny Cruise and Travel.

Energy prices frozen for more than 20 years S

OUNDS LIKE THE pre-World war 1 period, doesn’t it. Yet it is true. David and Christine of Glass House Mountains are retired pensioners who well realise they will find it really difficult, going into the future on fixed income pensions if electricity prices continue to rise and rise and rise. I mean, 95% in 7 years is outrageous, totally outrageous. I don’t think pensions have increased this much in the last 7 years, so it is no wonder many pensioners are unable to pay their electricity bills. Think how much worse it will be if one of them dies and the survivor has to pay almost totally the same power bill on a single pension. We have ensured that today’s energy charges CANNOT change for at least the next 20 years. We bet NO OTHER price in Australia will remain constant for 20 years or more. Sure, it has cost David and Christine just over $20,000 for both a large solar system and the battery, but future energy charges will never be a problem for them. Their energy costs are absolutely frozen for at least 20 years. All of the energy produced by their solar panels is used to run the appliances in their house and the surplus is stored in their HQ Energy Hub. No energy is needed from their previous supplier except in

heavy rainy days. Even all their night time energy needs are provided by the HQ Energy Hub. The HQ Energy Hub just takes total control of the energy needs of the house delivering energy to the house if it is not sunny, i.e. raining or at sunset and when the sun comes up the next day, the HQ Energy Hub then just fills itself up with the solar energy, ready for the next night. The manufacturers of the HQ Energy Hub, the BYD company has done its best to abuse the lithium-ion batteries inside the Hub. They have required the Hub to empty itself (flatten it) and then recharge it and then flatten it. They have done this 7,000 times (equal to 19 1/4 years). This represents day time charge (from solar) and night time emptying its contents to run the house. After 7,000 times of flattening the lithium-ion batteries they measured the ‘damage’ to the batteries was less than 1% a year. So the batteries, even if they receive the absolute worst treatment, are still expected to last about 25 years.

Now 20 or 25 years is a long time, and you may not be in your house for that long, so the HQ Energy Hub is a cabinet on wheels, designed for you to take them with you to each new house. So what ever benefit you enjoyed at your first home, will carry on to your subsequent homes. If you are concerned about future rising energy costs, you too can cement your price today - with no energy price increases.

Immediate freezing of electricity charges Next review after 2035

A retired pensioner couple of Glass House Mountains, were so fed up with the constantly rising electricity consumption charges (power used) that they opted to guarantee they would experience no more increases. David and Christine have had the foresight to purchase a ___kW solar system and HQ Energy Hub manufactured by the #1 technology company in the world with Apple at 2nd place (2010). They have been tirelessly tested to do 7,000 cycles (19 1/4 years equivalent) AND STILL after that abuse they had 80% of their original capacity. No wonder they were judged #1.

Here is an official record of what we have all put up with 95% in 7 years. And guess what? In the last 7 years energy prices have been subject to PRICE CONTROL. But as from July 1st - no more price control. So expect the worst, because you’ll get it. If you want to know more about how you too can freeze your current electricity charges for more than 20 years, phone 07 5438 7200.

Food Politics

Anywhere food by Morag Gamble Ethos Foundation www.ethosfoundation.org

T

HE RECENT BERRY scare is a reminder that all is not well in our food system. A hepatitis A outbreak in Australia has prompted a national recall of frozen berries. The berries were grown in China and Chile, washed in China and packed in Victoria. Poor worker hygiene and contaminated water supplies in China are considered likely to be the cause. Not surprisingly, demand for locally grown Australian berries has skyrocketed. What is surprising is that food scares are not more common. Even with the growing awareness of the benefits of local food, as a society we still demand to consume whatever food we want, whenever we want it. In fact we have become so disconnected from our food systems over the past decades, we don’t even realise we are asking for out-of-season food grown on the other side of the world. Our typical shopping trolley is filled with foods of unknown origin. We don’t know where it is grown, how it is grown, the pollution levels in the environment, what chemicals are used (which may be banned here), the conditions of the farmers, or the health standards in the production line. We also often don’t know how old the food is, how it was stored, or how many kilometres it took to reach us. ‘Packaged in Australia from local and imported ingredients,’ doesn’t give enough information. If we read a

product label in our local supermarket that said ‘Grown in Chile. Washed in China. Packed in Victoria,’ I’m certain we would put it back and reach for the packet with the ‘Grown in Australia’ label, or even reach for the one identified as locally grown. We trust that food safety standards are in place to protect us as consumers, however it appears the safety certificates we have come to rely on can be bought, due to the corruption in some overseas food policing systems. The gap between producer and consumer has become too wide. This is why more people are turning to local farmers markets, small community farms, and organic box systems to access food which nourishes, and which supports the environment and community. Consuming food produced closer to home is a far better option from many perspectives - for food safety and community health, for nutritionally dense food, to reduce embodied energy of food, and to support the local farming community. Supporting local producers does more than just educate around seasonal eating. It develops regional identity. We have an incredible capacity in this region to produce a wonderful array of foods. We have a flourishing local food culture in the hinterland. Next time you shop, reach for the local option.

ARE YOU FED UP WITH FEELING UNWELL? There comes a time in everyone’s life when your body starts giving you indications that functionally you’re out of balance. Usually this means you start to feel unwell. Nobody feels 100% healthy all the time, but when this unwellness feeling becomes a common occurrence, then you must address the causes and fix them. This feeling of unwellness can take many forms, but usually I find there are multiple causes that must be fixed. If you’re not feeling well and have some or all of the following symptoms and have some concerns about your health, its time to give me a call. Ask yourself do you · feel tired a lot, both mentally and physically · have digestive disturbances, reflux, gas, constipation or malabsorption (dark circles under your eyes) · have big energy swings during the day, get shaky when hungry, have problems with concentration, short tempered. All these are indicative of blood sugar problems · if you’re female, have signs and symptoms of hormonal imbalances, for example, unfriendly periods, PMT, menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, mood swings · have sleep problems – don’t sleep well, wake up tired, wake up at night and can’t get back to sleep · feel depressed, flat, non motivated My approach identifies and corrects the causes of your unwellness. It’s time isn’t it, to lift your energy levels and start feeling alive again.

Ayurvedic Health Advice to Suit You Dietary Dilemmas MA... THESE DAYS MANY DIFFERENT diets are being touted as the ideal for our health. Raw food, Paleo diet, Vegan, high protein, gluten free, grain free… It’s getting harder to have Wendy Rosenfeldt a group of friends over for dinner and keep everyone happy without cooking, or not cooking, separate dishes for everyone. While Ayurveda has its own recommendations, preferring lacto-vegetarian cooked food, the Vedic understanding of different mind/body types helps to throw some light on the culinary confusion. Ayurveda identifies 3 doshas or governing principles that operate in nature. They give rise to the whole manifest universe and help to explain the variety in human nature. Vata dosha is like the wind and has the qualities of being quick, light, changeable, dry, cold and brittle. Someone who has a predominance of Vata in their nature tends to be quick in speech and movement, light in build with a tendency towards dry hair and skin. Vata types are lively and enthusiastic, quick to adopt new ideas and plans but also changeable in their thoughts and actions. Vata predominant people have delicate digestive systems and do best with a regular routine of meals, sleep and exercise, as their innate sense of routine can be easily thrown off by stress and excitement. Raw food and high protein diets can be difficult to digest for Vata types. Dry, cold, spacy Vata is pacified by warm, cooked, slightly unctuous food with the predominance of sweet, sour and salty tastes. While it may go against the current trend, warm milk, ghee, cooked grains and vegetables give Vata the grounding quality that is missing from their physiology.

Pitta is like the fire and is hot, sharp, and intense by nature. People with a predominance of Pitta are passionate, have a warm body temperature and a medium build. Pitta types display the colours of the fire in their hair and their skin, tending towards red or blonde hair, fair skin or ruddy complexion. They are intense, have good intellects and when out of balance can be impatient and easily angered. Pitta gives good digestion and metabolism so Pitta people can cope with a variety of diets. Spicy, sour and acidic food aggravates Pitta as does caffeine and alcohol. Pitta’s fire is balanced by cooling, fresh food with predominantly sweet, astringent and bitter tastes. Consuming a bowl of salad or enjoying sweet fruit is soothing to Pitta’s heat and intensity. Pitta types should steer away from red meat and sea food in large amounts. It is important for Pittas to eat when they are hungry or they can feel irritable. Earthy Kapha has the qualities of being, cold, stable, sticky, heavy and sweet. Kapha types are stable, have good endurance and more oil in their hair and skin. They have bigger builds and larger features. Their digestion is regular but they have the tendency to gain weight if they over eat. People with more Kapha in their nature do well with a diet of whole grains and fresh vegetables. Too much dairy can create excess mucous and congestion. Kapha types can enjoy the stimulating quality of spices such as ginger, cloves, pepper and mustard seeds and are balanced by food with predominantly pungent, bitter and astringent tastes.

This is why your dog eats grass...

H

AVE YOU EVER NOTICED how when your dog feels poorly he goes out and munches on some grass? This is because grass contains B 17 the same substance that is in apricot kernel seeds. B17 or Laetriles active ingredient, amygdalin, is said to have many health benefits, one of these is to target and kill cancer cells. The problem is whilst apricot kernel seeds are quite high in B17 they can be toxic if over eaten as they contain cyanide. I only ever eat one a day and my puppies love their little treat of one a day as well. Because Apricot kernels can be toxic it is good to know of other foods that are high in B17, for example. Millet seeds, buckwheat, alfalfa, macadamia nuts and mung beans just to name a few. Apple seeds also contain B 17 but they too contain high levels of cyanide and should only be eaten very sparingly. My advice is not to give children apricot kernels seeds rather offer them a rich and varied organic diet. Chuck

out cane sugar in all forms, substitute it with pure honey or maple syrup. Curcumin the active ingredient in Turmeric, has also been shown to protect against various cancers. Avocados are high in oleic acid, which improves fasting plasma glucose, insulin sensitivity and blood circulation, research shows that this establishes better diabetes control while also protecting against other diseases. Glucose metabolism is important in protecting you against cancer. So let food be your medicine but remember balance and variety, natural is very powerful. The most easily available substance that effects positive change in your body is the chemistry of your own loving feelings, and the peace that comes from stillness and a trust in Spirit. These include lifestyle related diseases, thyroid, adrenal burnout, hormones, allergies, digestive, bowel and liver complaints, auto immune disease, recovery from serious illness, stress, anxiety, fatigue, poor sleep, low energy, preconception, pregnancy and post natal care. I practice Herbal Medicine, Functional Medicine, Naturopathy and Nutrition, and believe that getting to the cause of a dysfunction requires quite a bit of medical detective work to put the pieces of the puzzle together,

Sallyann Stewart

Naturopath, Herbalist, Remedial Massage Therapist, Live Blood Analysis Practitioner

Naturopathic Clinical Testings: • Live Blood Analysis (Hemaview) – immune status, nutrient deficiency, digestive issues • urinary & saliva pH testing, iridology, gut dysbiosis, zinc status, blood type testing, naturopathic assessment, hormonal testing Specialising in: • Stress/adrenal management, detoxification, children’s health, digestive disorders, hormonal/thyroid complaints, preventative/maintaining wellness healthcare, nutrition & dietary support, fatigue issues. • Remedial, Relaxation, Deep tissue & Sports massage, Lymphatic drainage. Appointments: 5435 2599 / 0421 410 558 sallyann@naturaltherapiesstudio.com

identify the culprit and get to the source of the problem. I see my role as a 'Health Detective' practitioner exploring all subtle and overt influences of the condition, taking great time and care to listen and mind even the smallest details that truly do matter to healing and recovery. Chronic lifestyle related diseases often do not respond well to the mainstream symptom-centric, one size fits all 'band aid' approach. This can drive the disease deeper into the body where it may emerge at a later date as a much more serious problem. An individualised approach with thorough assessment,

Terri Schaumberg

blood pathology, and any other relevant in clinic testing including Thyroflex, urinary iodine etc., that may be required is more prudent, practical and workable. Appointments 5499 9476. Live Well, Feel Well.
