Heatley, the boys and I were away for a couple of weeks annual leave, chilly down south but I managed to inhale three books whilst they hit Hotham's slopes. Our road trip down and back reminded me of our trip round Oz a few years back. Ahh! We loved visiting Marlo and Cape Conran National Park, the Australian Mint and the Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre. Somehow we also managed to join the PM's cavalcade after a visit to the new Canberra Arboretum! Sort of - well, the police held traffic for us too.

I snuck out of bed before everyone woke and took my cup of tea, for a sunrise all to myself. Winter clearly left us the day we returned back to my desk - and such a contrast to being snowed in. members of the maleny men's shed invite blokes to drop in and say hi!

HE MAPLETON Men's Shed has opened a free drop-in centre on September 4 for local men. Running weekdays from 9.30am til noon at Mapleton's newly renovated Forestry Barracks, the centre offers a range of activities, from computing facilities, board games, television, newspapers and books. Men’s Shed member, Frans Staats, has been involved from the beginning, and shares some of his experience. "Our goal was to have a space where men could socialise, pursue their interests or just get away from it all, without the need for memberships. I take it on me to supervise the drop-in centre five days a week… “I was picked because I get on with people, I make

them feel comfortable, “ he grins. “I had a hotel background in Asia, and now I am chef of the luncheons, every month. We get about 40-50 people.” Frans says that despite the ‘shed’ name, the men are “not all woodworkers or metalworkers, they’re just men who come to socialise. Every older man has a story to tell and they do tell them!” Frans is happy with the way things are progressing. “They built a new kitchen for me in the barracks. Where the three bedrooms were, the kitchen is now, with hot and cold running water. “The workshop is out the back with wood, metal and any other workshop material they want. And we do things for the Mapleton Library, putting bookcases on

castors and things like that. "We also provide tea, coffee and biscuits, in the old pantry, for a gold coin donation, along with some good old conversation." This great initiative is one of many ways the Mapleton Men's Shed has served the community and with such a dedicated group, any visitors to the centre will be in good company. “We just hope the older guys will come out and drop in - you don’t have to be a member just come and say hello…” says Frans. S WITH SO MANy of my generation who grew up in Queensland, Inigo Jones was a household name. My father, from a farming background, was very familiar with the weatherman’s long-range predictions. But while the agricultural sector and the Queensland Government acknowledged the weather guru’s contributions, the Commonwealth Bureau of Meteorology fobbed off any approach made by Jones. In 1928, the Queensland Government appointed him as director of the Bureau of Seasonal Forecasting of the Council of Agriculture, and the Inigo Jones Seasonal Weather Forecasting Trust was formed with government and industry contributions. The Lord Mayor of Brisbane was appointed chairman. Jones lobbied the Met Bureau to take his work seriously, but for many years was treated with disdain, which troubled the Commonwealth Government whose agricultural sector championed his cause. Commonwealth reviews held in the 1940s concluded that there wasn’t enough scientific evidence in his method or accuracy in his forecasts for the government to back him. Meanwhile, Australian farmers continued to use his predictions along with local knowledge. In answer to his critics, Jones said it would take another 300 years of data to prove his theory. Such is the timeline of his long-range weather forecasting, that takes into account cycles linking sunspot activity with planetary movements.

The Peachester Hall Committee chose the life and work of this man as their contribution to the Festival of Community Halls Program, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the naming of the Sunshine Coast. As their guest, I attended a screening of Deluge (a docudrama about the 1893 flood) supported by an impressive display of Inigo Jones’ memorabilia, most of which has been donated to the Peachester History Committee by the Jones family.

Inigo was, of course, a local boy. His father took up land at Peachester in 1892, naming the property Crohamhurst – a name that is now famous for the observatory, officially opened on August 13, 1935, that became the centre of Inigo’s lifetime of research. His fascination with meteorology had led him to seek a cadetship with the Queensland Meteorological Bureau under his mentor, Clement Wragge – an advocate of longrange forecasting. On February 2, 1893, a year after the Jones family moved to Peachester, Inigo recorded a whopping 907 mm of rain in 24 hours. The record stands today. In its heyday, the Crohamhurst Observatory, set on 200 acres, contained a large computing room and laboratory, deep-earth temperature pits taking readings to a depth of over 10 metres, a Stevenson screen housing instruments and three telescopes for solar observations. During his later years, Inigo thought seriously about the future of the property and his life’s work. In the mid 1940s he offered the land, excluding the portion containing the observatory, to the Department of Forestry to expand his experimental hoop pine plot, then leased their property back from the department. This land is now Crohamhurst Forest. He then placed an advertisement in the paper

for an assistant; and so Lennox Walker came to Crohamhurst, continuing Inigo’s work after his death in 1954. Inigo would have felt vindicated when, in 2008, his observatory was listed in the State Heritage Register as an “education, research, and scientific facility … demonstrating the importance of long-range weather forecasting to the rural communities of Australia”. These days, Lennox’s son, Hayden Walker, continues the work that began with Clement Wragge in the 19th century from Walkers Weather in Bundaberg. Inigo Jones wasn’t only a weather forecaster, he also had a passion for art, and over the years faithfully reproduced five Constable oil paintings. During demolition of the farmhouse and library building, four disappeared, but the remaining one has been hanging over the doorway of the Peachester Hall since the 1950s. With assistance from the Regional Collection Care Program (funded by the Cultural Heritage Levy) the painting was restored by Mapleton’s Richard McDonald of RSM Art Conservation. Councillor Rick Baberowski attended the celebrations to launch its re-hanging in the hall. Two of Inigo’s grandchildren also attended celebrations at the Peachester Hall. Naomi Love added an original large brown teapot to the Jones’ collection and her brother, Dmitri Koroloff, related anecdotes demonstrating Inigo’s sense of humour. “He was a bit of a wag,” explained Dmitri. “One time, during a very dry winter, he predicted it would rain in August. People were sceptical, finally asking him to name the day. He did, and it rained. “As he walked along Queen Street with his umbrella unopened, someone from the Telegraph asked why he didn’t open it to keep rain off. He replied, ‘It’s my rain and I’ll walk in it’.”

PONDERED OVER writing this story and how I might do justice to the life of a woman who has experienced a great deal of injustice yet prevailed. Caren (Carrie) Stevenson presents as a montage of terrors and triumphs, couture and catwalks. New Zealand born Carrie was bullied at school, subjected to domestic violence in her adult years, is a survivor, activist and protector of children. Carrie’s parents worked in the fashion industry. Her father a drafter, cutter and pattern maker and mother a seamstress. Her interest in sewing began around the age of seven when Caren’s mother presented her with a toy metal sewing machine. The child made dolls clothes and by the time she was 12 created her own outfits using the likes of Simplicity and Vogue patterns. As a teenager, Carrie watched films that stimulated her interest in fashion. “I adored movies starring Audrey Hepburn and loved anything Mary Quant. It was iconic fashion but also the make-up, hair and the 60s shift dresses got me.

“Even though I told Mum and Dad I wanted to follow their footsteps in the fashion industry they were adamant saying there would be no jobs. They said I had to be a secretary.” Carrie’s secretarial career gained her positions at the university, Press News and the Labour Court. Her shorthand skills were in high demand. However, a career lacking in creativity caused the young woman to be easily bored, a disposition that led her to Australia in 1986. After a time, Carrie became pregnant. She returned to New Zealand and began life as a sole parent. “Then I married and found myself in a domestic violence situation. He nearly strangled me to death. I shut my eyes and said, please God don’t let me die today. Eventually he was arrested and jailed for other offences so I made my escape.” Carrie’s next relationship took her to Western Australia. While pregnant with her fifth child she again found herself in an unsafe situation. The young mother fled. The family of six settled in Toowoomba, was allocated a housing commission house and stayed for seven years. Feeling stagnant and stuck Carrie decided it was time to

move on. Family on the Sunshine Coast was the drawcard. “After applying for 11 houses I finally got one at Little Mountain. I was there a year then moved to Maleny and haven’t looked back since,” said Carrie. To support her family, Caren Stevenson took up the position of cleaner at the Maleny State School and River School. Then, out of left field her life took another turn…a path she wholly embraced. “Through Girl Guides I met a woman who used to make hats. She mentioned hat blocks and a lady in Beerwah who wanted to pass on her skills. I was curious. “In 2012, Hat Academy online put me on a new path and it grew from there. “I’d never been to the races and didn’t know you could win ‘Fashions on the Field’ prizes like cars and holidays from wearing hats. I realised there was this whole world where women pay a lot of money for a hat that’s different from anyone else’s. It was a revelation. “Since then I’ve studied couture and learnt from top milliners.” Caren Lee Millinery specialises in bespoke, upcycled and new millinery using traditional methods. This innovative designer is on a fast-track to become a coveted milliner and stylist. “A highlight was at the Caloundra Cup where model Sheryl Lea wore my winged headpiece. One of the judges was Miss World Australia 2015, Tess Alexander, who sought me out wanting to buy that hat. “Competing against leading milliners we had a major win at the Ipswich 150th Anniversary Cup 2016. Two pieces made

the final judging of Fashions on the Field. One took out first prize in the vintage category. “Model Inessa McIntyre wearing a peacock hat creation was our Queensland Fashions on the Field state finalist for 2016. I was honoured to be chosen to design her outfit to wear at the State Governor of Victoria's Melbourne Cup Gala,” said Carrie delighting in her successes. Accolades for Caren Lee Millinery are too numerous to mention. However, in September of this year she will participate in ‘Radiant’ through RAW Artists a network of artists that spans the globe. The event will be held at The Met in Brisbane. Locally, Carrie supports Vintage Calendar Girls, a charity fundraiser for cancer. She donates hats for the photo shoots and auction. Materials used by Caren Lee range from local peacock feathers to Gutter Guard from Bunnings. Scraps of lace, braid, silk and leather may develop into flamboyant flowers or a tasteful trim. Whatever the case Carrie could be named the bower bird of millinery. “I once found a beaded designer top at an op-shop. No garment is safe, it may become a hat or a skirt. It’s all about how you put an outfit together. I have made leather flowers and hand coloured them to match the flowers on a skirt.” Caren Stevenson, milliner, mother, grandmother, can only be described as a woman who fought and won. A woman of flair and substance. She overcame great obstacles to live her passion and is aptly described in this quote by Joshua Graham:

can you imagine taking your new-born baby home wrapped in newspaper? in some third world countries this is the norm, and now a local Flaxton group is on a mission to help - with knitting needles and plenty of wool! Ht writer victoria Mcguin went to find out more.

T’S A BuSy MORNING at The Cottage, at RangeCare in Flaxton, with tables full of retirees enjoying a morning tea before various events ahead. On a table in the corner sits a colourful display of knitted baby jumpers and beanies, ready to be sent to children in Africa. We are lucky in Australia to have safe, hygienic birthing options and our babies are swaddled in muslins or blankets to keep their core body temperature at the right level after birth. In some other countries, this is not a possibility and babies are sent home from hospital wrapped in newspaper to keep them warm, earning them the dubious mantle, ‘Fish and Chip’ babies. Belinda Watts, a care support worker at the cottage introduces me to Janet Middleton, Nellie Wood and Margaret Newson, the women who, along with Belinda, have created everything in the colourful display for these ‘Fish and Chip’ babies in Africa.

It is clear from the start that Margaret is the driving force behind this initiative and we attempt to talk above the hubbub. “I was part of a craft group in Mapleton and I first heard about these people knitting for babies in Africa through a Nambour lady, Valerie Zwart. She coordinates the shipping and collection of the jumpers around the region. “I was given the pattern and it was so easy to do, just use double-knitting wool and 4mm needles, cast on 44 stitches. I tend to use bigger size needles so it stretches for any size baby and lasts longer. “We are also supposed to make the jumpers in darker colours to show less dirt, as many of these babies won’t get washed often, but sometimes it’s tempting to use brighter colours! “It’s good for me too,” Margaret admits, “as it keeps my eyes and hands going.” I notice Margaret’s right hand is misshapen, and can see she has difficulty walking without help. “I had an accident when I was 13,” she tells me. “I was run over by a bus and my hand was mangled, along with both legs. They didn’t expect me to live. I was told I wouldn’t make 18, then 21, then 27…” Margaret is 75 years old. “I have had a lot of plastic surgery, the last one was a year ago. But I am always grateful for that first doctor who saved my hand. He told me to keep on doing exercises, so I did knitting, tatting, painting, all sorts of craft.” Margaret also studied with watercolourist A.M. Richardson, became a member of the Royal Queensland Art Society, and had her paintings in exhibitions in Brisbane. “Surgery eventually prohibited me painting, which is when I moved on to tatting and other craft, and now knitting for these babies in Africa.” Janet Middleton joins in, “I’ve been knitting since I was five years old. My mum used to knit for the Clifton College and the cricket team back in Somerset, so I naturally took it up. And now it keeps the arthritis at bay!” she smiles. Nellie Wood is a regular work horse for the team, they joke, making five in a week. “She’s 93 and she does more than the rest of us!” says Belinda. “And her designs are wonderful.” “I’ve been knitting for as long as I can remember,” Nellie says. “I pick up the knitting at five o’clock and finish at eleven!” Belinda was encouraged to join the team after becoming Margaret’s ‘go-between’. “We held a Teddy Bears Picnic here to get other ladies interested, dressing the bears in the jumpers. “I tried a couple of prototypes and made a mess of the first two; then it went okay and now I can’t put the knitting needles down! I am also always buying wool, and I never seem to use up my supply.” Margaret enjoys seeing the group grow, and is no stranger to creating something of value within the community, having helped set up the original Care Cottage in Flaxton itself. “I was living in Montville and had to have injections every morning. I realised with a few others in similar circumstances that we needed to create a group to help everyone. It grew and grew.

“The Flaxton Care Group started at the old Flaxton School here, and today it has become RangeCare.” Despite a life filled with surgeries and challenges, Margaret has a great sense of appreciation, and a strong generosity of spirit. “We can go out and buy things if we like - they can’t. It is so wonderful to think of babies going home in something other than newspaper, and being a grandmother brings it closer to home to me.” The original pattern had no beanie, so Margaret added one, realising a lot of heat is lost through the head. “If you look up ‘Fish and Chip’ babies online, you will see some pictures of them with our jumpers and beanies on. It is such a lovely thing to see and inspires us to keep going.” The microphone is switched on – a short presentation is about to begin, where Margaret and Belinda will share the story of the ‘Fish and Chip’ babies to potential new recruits in the room. “I’m glad this will be in the Hinterland Times,” says Belinda. “It would be good for the younger generation to continue this.” Margaret agrees, “It’s so easy and it makes such a difference.” For more information on helping knit for the ‘Fish and Chip’ babies, or to donate wool, please contact Belinda Watts at rangeCare on 07 5445 7044.

Train now for the Mountain View Challenge! it is easy to take our beautiful surroundings for granted. it is when friends and family come to visit us that we can appreciate the magnificence of our area. runners will converge on Maleny next month, and as the route follows the edge of the blackall range, they'll feast on our views of the glass House Mountains. but according to one participant, teressa schmidt, there are other reasons it is her favourite event in the running calendar.

HE MOuNTAIN VIEW Challenge is my favourite event in the running calendar. Luckily it is in October, so there is plenty of time to train for it over the cooler months of the year. This year will be my third time running it, and I can’t wait. Elite runners enter this race to test themselves and to truly hone their fitness before taking on other challenges, but most who enter are ordinary, everyday people like myself who just love running. I was encouraged to enter the first time by my running friends from Golden Beach parkrun and members of our Sunny Coast Darkrunners group. One in particular – let’s just call him ‘Peter’ - assured me that there was only one hill. He neglected to tell me that from the moment we leave the flat terrain of the showgrounds, we start to climb that hill, and while you would normally expect that what goes up must come down, there really did seem to be much more up, up, up than down, down, down.

So, let’s say this straight up – running 21.1 kms is hard. Running 21.1kms through the hills of Maleny is harder still - but there are so many reasons to complete this run. This is by far one of the friendliest events I have entered, and every runner is cheered as if they are an Olympian.

The volunteers are wonderful, and it is hard not to stop for a chat and to enjoy the view at each aid station. Actually, I might have done just that - after all the running up, up, up, it was nice to have a quick chat, and enjoy some of the BEST WATER I HAVE EVER TASTED before heading up, up, up and then down, down, down again. yes, that is another great reason to do this run – the water at the aid stations is pure Maleny spring water, and I honestly can’t imagine that I will ever taste water that good anywhere else. Trust me, you should sign up for this run just to taste this magical water. Now, the other great thing about running (or even walking) up the hill is the view. I guess the title of the run ‘Mountain View Challenge’ might give some clue – but truly, the view is magnificent. If I wasn’t spending so long at the aid stations, drinking the water and having a chat with the friendly volunteers, I would have probably taken selfies with that view. yes, it is worth running up that hill just to take in the view. Maleny is also a very friendly place, and there were many community members cheering the runners on as we ran up and down the hills. In fact, even the cows – yes, you will run past cows in their paddocks – seemed to be cheering us on. If you have never been up close and personal with a cow, perhaps that is yet another reason to do this run. While I admit that I am not the fastest runner, and I think that most could achieve this run, I do suggest some training.

If you don’t feel ready for 21.1km, there are shorter events, and all of them come with the mountains, the magical views, the friendly volunteers, the special Maleny water and the cheering cows. If you are a seasoned runner and really want to challenge yourself, this is definitely a race for your bucket list. I am really very much looking forward to the 2017 Mountain View Challenge, and I hope to see many new faces enjoying this event. If you are not yet convinced, it is worth remembering that this is a race for a good cause – your entry will go towards the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation. So, what are you waiting for? Take the challenge – and I look forward to meeting you at the start line on October 15. the finish line was a welcome place to be last year, but teressa will be back for more!

ALENy GARDEN CLuB Inc. celebrate their 65th Birthday and Friendship Day in September. The surviving Life Members share their favourite times spent with their gardening friends… 65 years ago Olga webster became a member soon after the foundation of the Maleny and district Horticultural society. Her husband, alan, was Foundation treasurer and club Patron for 40 years. Olga's mother, ida nothling, was also a Foundation Member. My memories commence from the 1950's when we experienced a bad hail storm. Alan Lockwood, who grew a lot of dahlias at Conondale, thought he might lose them so

he gathered them up for Peg Burnett who was a keen floral artist, to see if she could use them. Her husband Rixon laid two sheets of corrugated iron on the carpet in the lounge and placed the blooms on them. They laid them out and decided to make a floral carpet at a fete that was to be held in the next day or two. We have many beautiful Camellias on our property which we were able to share with members when meetings were held in our garden. Meetings were held monthly in different members’ gardens, and a guest speaker was usually present either imparting their knowledge or demonstrating Floral Art. Shared picnic lunches and fellowship after the meetings are still fresh in my mind. The floral carpets were so much fun, joy and satisfaction, they brought us all together.”

Pat Powell assumed the role of the President of the garden club in 1993, taking over from corinne taylor. Corinne had worked so hard to make the Club more efficient which made my tenure so much easier. My memories are of meetings held, “weather permitting”, in members’ gardens, with an invitation to walk around the garden learning about plants which grew well on our Range. Local members were most helpful to the newcomers. We experimented with mixed success with plants from both cool and tropical districts. Corinne had instigated a “bird in our garden'” segment into our meetings for us to become familiar with the birds in our district. A few members were most knowledgeable bird watchers, telling us about the birds, their calls and habits. Our Autumn Show developed from being just a floral carpet to a theme plus a carpet. It was felt if visitors were to pay to view our carpet, buy our plants and produce that we needed to provide a larger more interesting display than the previous year. One year we arranged displays from our garden to compliment a picture. Another year we celebrated Waltzing Matilda with displays and floral contributions from our gardens. During my time as President, “Gardening Australia” came to Queensland and so started years of Maleny gardens being opened to locals and visitors. This secured a place for Maleny on the garden map for interested gardeners in Queensland. Our Garden Club has become a very popular venue for new arrivals interested in gardening, forging friendships which have lasted for a lifetime.” di Hall was President and Floral carpet convenor for many years. I came to Maleny from the Kenmore Garden Club. I recall attending my first garden club meeting which was advertised in the Range News, where I was made most welcome by the ten or so members. It was from that meeting where the members gave me a carload of cuttings which I used to get the garden started. I gained so much knowledge from attending the meetings. I have wonderful memories of Club members: one of the members was an excellent painter of ceramics, paintings of birds, some of which I still have in my possession. There is something about belonging to a Garden Club that invokes a spirit of generosity, have you ever met a gardener that wasn't happy to share what they have? I miss the picnics that we used to have where food, laughter (and the odd fly, dust and ants) were shared. val bengston came to Maleny as a child. I have very strong memories of members’ generosity, providing cuttings that could be grown in my garden. I also have fond memories making the carpets. It was a long process, pine branches being stripped of the needles which were then used as a bed for the flowers, it took days to get that ready.

Working together on the carpet where the creative and talented members put everything in its place, we with the scissors and secateurs on our hands and knees, handing things to them, it was such good camaraderie. We worked on the designs for months before the carpets were made, featuring themes the members voted on. The designs were firstly drawn or painted then replicated with blooms. A flying carpet made in 2003 on a frame suspended off the floor complete with Persian slippers was a highlight. I remember all the work when the ladies in the Club catered for the Autumn and Spring Fairs. Many memories of wonderful lasting friendships.

norma McLeod first attended a meeting in a member’s garden, met 30 welcoming ladies and was hooked. Working at Autumn Fairs in the Community Centre with theme displays and floral carpets was a joy. One year Colin Campbell sat in a hut constructed from bamboo poles and banana leaves to give his gardening advice. The Spring Fairs had flower and floral art competitions with craft/produce, plants, cuttings and Tussie Mussie (posies) stalls. Perfume wafted outside and two ladies in evening gowns sold Tussie Mussies in the street. I have wonderful memories of gardening knowledge gained and friendships maintained. So many good times shared with like-minded folk. It has been a source of much pleasure seeing the Garden Club grow and the enthusiasm of the members. I remember going to my first meeting and bringing a lupin for the flower competition that I was rather proud of and being told “Take that home, that’s not a flower”, so I just sat down. After so many years she can still laugh about it. June crane came to Maleny from being the President of the indooroopilly garden club and very quickly became involved in the Maleny gardening event calendar, being the organiser of the autumn & spring Fairs as well as secretary. Belonging to a garden club to me means friendship, sharing and learning from others. The best decision that I have ever made was to move to Maleny and join the Garden Club. Jo tedman organised the club raffles for nigh on 14 years, continually coming up with something that the members were always keen to take home. The popular Tussie Mussies were another initiative of Jo's and memories of working together with Thalia Skerman, Leonie Loch and Nancy Schaffer are precious. F YOU HAVE never heard of Strawbfest before, it is a strawberry festival held at Chevallum State School on the first Friday of September every year. The whole community gets involved, from the school, to the locals, to the SES, Lions and Rotary Club. This year it starts at 5pm on Friday, September 8, and will continue until around 9.30pm. It is so popular that they usually start running out of food at around 8pm! HE ZONTA CLuB of Blackall Range, chartered on October 25, 1997, is trying to locate any former members who would like to receive an invitation for the anniversary dinner to be held at The Orangery in Maleny on October 28 this year. Coordinator, charter member and past president, Ann Koenig, said invitations would be sent out in the next few weeks, so it was important to try to find them. “Every woman who has been a member of our club has contributed to its success and this is a way to acknowledge this,” she said. Charter Members - those who were members when Zonta Club Of Blackall Range formed, Lorraine Duffy, Barbara Inwood (Fowler), Ann Koenig, and Tricia Steer are still very active members now (pictured). Tricia is involved with the Zonta Blackall Range annual scholarship for a university woman student. OCATED AT THE centre of town, the Maleny Community Centre (MCC) has an iconic presence in the heart of Maleny. In 2013 the extensive frontage renovation and new deck put a stamp on the MCC’s status as a major landmark and gathering point for our hinterland community. The MCC is owned and managed by our community through the members of the MCC, who will be meeting on September 16 at 9.30am. when the 2017 Annual General Meeting will be held. Everyone is welcome (but only financial members can vote), and stay on afterwards to meet the committee and friends, and enjoy complimentary light refreshments. The MCC is keen to meet people who might want to become members and contribute as volunteers. There are plenty of opportunities, such as being a member of the management committee, helping at working bees and working behind the bar. Why not join volunteers of the MCC, like Ann Koenig, Denis Costello and Pauline Robinson (pictured) and find out more?

HE BEST WAy TO shut down lies and discrimination about the same-sex marriage debate, would have been not to leave it in the hands of the public. A vote in parliament for marriage equality was the way our society could have wrapped our arms around our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) citizens and tell them that they are valued and accepted. But it is too late for a bill - the $122 million ABS plebiscite will start rolling out this month. If all of our leaders had the gumption to display leadership and used the ballot box, not only would it have saved a truckload of cash, but it would be a standard that would help squash prejudice. The Marriage Bill of 1961 set the minimum marriageable age as 18, making marriage law uniform across Australia, but it did not include a definition of marriage. Did you know that marriage was not even defined until 2004, when the act was amended to exclude same-sex couples, and not recognise same-sex marriages conducted overseas. If same-sex couples are excluded from marriage, it sends a message out that sexual orientation discrimination is acceptable. So let's redefine it. The debate is not just about marriage. It is about equality, and accepting every Australian citizen for who they are, and acknowledging that love is love, and not exclusive to heterosexual relationships. The Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey asks all of us: ‘Should the law be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry?’. Can we please stop discrimination - for sexual orientation, race, religion… Let's ensure young Australians grow up knowing that they have the right to marry the person they love. Forms are posted from September 12, with responses due by 6pm on October 27 and results expected November 15.

Well known locals, Bryan and Val Hughes have made a move!

FTER ONE HAS achieved that near perfect state of nirvana, i.e. ‘retirement’, and after one has made provision for maintaining a decent income into one’s future, one, hopefully, will have a certain amount of leftover lolly. This lolly is used by one to facilitate enjoyment of those traditional perks of...how shall I say it?...one’s advancing middle age. Perhaps travel to distant shores, a new caravanning rig, a sup or two of a rather good red, but just from time to time, mind you! For me, though, a time arrived in ‘retirement’ when the carefree experience of cheerfully maintaining a pictureperfect two acres of luscious green lawn morphed into a terrible chore to keep ahead of that bloody defiant grass...always bloody-well growing. This moment coincided with another moment of realisation; that the pile of leftover lolly was a pile no more. Good grief, what to do? Apparently ‘downsizing’ is the regulation answer to this conundrum, but one must of course decide on where to downsize to. My spouse, Val, and I thought that moving to the seaside town of Burrum Heads would be perfect. There is no point in asking “why me?” because the answer is simply “why not me?” Get on with life. And Val did just that with great determination and an absolutely positive outlook on our future life. A visit by the Big C, however, forces the rather unpalatable realisation that one is not actually invincible, as one had previously thought, and it also forces one to reevaluate one’s plans, doesn’t it. Not only that, Val and I were overwhelmed by the support and love shown by so many friends and acquaintances around Maleny. How could we even contemplate leaving such a wonderful network of loving people? Of course, the Big C, even in remission, casts a long shadow, a shadow that cannot be ignored. So the former Captains Invincible threw out the Burrum adventure choosing instead to downsize into an “Over 50’s Lifestyle Village” near Buderim. A key determinant was that if one of us should cross the rainbow bridge the other would be well settled in a close community, without the unnecessary disruption of another relocation. Now, as you know, over 23 years, if one is not vigilant, a lot of stuff can build up in a large house, a large double garage and a large cellar. We had not been vigilant. Our new villa, complete with double garage of rather modest proportions and no cellar, is just half the size of our previous home. A lot of stuff had to go! Come removal day, the removalist and I were dismayed to find that, even after culling, we still had 140 various-sized cartons plus the furniture. Add in the gargantuan number of plants and pots and statuary that Val absolutely had to keep. “You worry-wart,” she scolded. “I’ll find a place for all of them.” Much to my surprise, she has. Val and I are now certified inmates of our new ‘gated’ resort, along with 130-odd fellow inmates already ensconced in the village. Eventually there will be about 340 bodies enjoying the “Over 50’s Lifestyle” but I’m not really sure how that particular style of life is supposed to unwrap. Certainly it will revolve around the three million dollar plus leisure centre now being built. All the usual modern facilities are coming: library, heated pool, gym, tennis, bowls, art-house cinema, circular fire hearth, teppanyaki BBQ etc., etc...oh, and bar. No self-respecting over 50’s Lifestyler would style his or her life without a bar, certainly not this particular Lifestyler. Living in the Village, I have an unexpected feeling of difference and separation from life in the outside world (although I’m reasonably sure that the outside world is still carrying-on, albeit with Mr Trump). We villagers are all of a type, I think. Reasonably well-off, of a similar age, new in our

little community and definitely looking for a companionable on-going, out-going social experience. Already in our short street we local Lifestylers are busy establishing a Friday tradition of 5 o’clock Conviviality-on-theStreet. Currently attention is focused on how to set up a movable, safe fire-pit. Val is brushing up on her mulled wine recipe and sourcing the best cheap spring rolls too. The next monthly village-wide Happy Hour held in the partly constructed Leisure Centre is scheduled shortly; champagne and canapés courtesy of management. But I do hope that we Lifestylers are not enjoying the equivalent of a sheltered (but much less voluptuous) lifestyle inside Versailles while the peasants burn Paris. Au revoir

This holiday program for children and young people offers a fun mix of workshops inspired by the Sunshine Coast’s beautiful birds. Between September 18-29, creative and cultural facilitators invite you to flock together and weave a nest, become a cockatoo, share traditional stories, mould, mosaic, sketch and paint bird-inspired artworks, create a birdsong soundscape or meet a real owl! Join us this September as we ‘Discover the Life of Birds’! birds of clay Come and play with clay! In this workshop we will make our own little birds, with textured talons, plumage for preening and feathers to fly. Local artist Linley Boyle will show children how to work with clay and decorate using sticks and seeds, to craft a delicate feathered friend to be taken home and treasured. Inspired by the hinterland

The artist lineup is impressive; local hot glass artist Tina Cooper said, “A chance connection with a discarded piece of beach wood inspired me to create the new coral piece that I intended to enter in 2017.” Channelling her inner lumberjack, the local woodies taught her how to cut and carve into the desired shape and form to incorporate her hand-blown glass seahorse with glass and iron corals.

akadu’ K – an artist ’s perspective

ALENy LOCAL, Peter Hudson and four other renowned Australian artists travelled to Kakadu in the Northern Territory to participate in an artist’s camp. As it has since transpired, it is the same site where recently found artefacts show that Aboriginal people have lived in Australia for 65,000 years 18,000 years longer than previously estimated. Born in the Northern Territory, Mike Mitchell, Director of Mitchell Fine Art, organised the trip to showcase to these artists some of the most exquisite landscape that Australia has to offer. It also provided the opportunity for them to connect with the world’s oldest living culture. Travelling to western Arnhem Land the group spent time with traditional owners and their families exploring the country, visiting rarely seen rock art and scenery, and learning about the area and the immense significance of country for the local Aboriginal people. What followed was a week of plein air painting (French for painting outdoors) in and around

Arnhem Land. It resulted in a body of work that is an immediate reaction to the landscape, a painterly response to the experiences and observations of the world’s oldest culture in a place unchanged over thousands of years. Sitting on a rocky outcrop overlooking a billabong, as a three metre crocodile leisurely cruises past, evokes images of a lifestyle and culture that goes beyond recorded memory. Rock art that depicts Thylacines (Tasmanian Tigers), ceremony and the mail plane from the 1930s shows a pictorial history of the area. This all had a profound effect of this group of artists, including Steve Lopes, Euan Macleod, Franck Gohier and Christine Christophersen and is reflected in the artworks produced. The exhibition ‘Kakadu’ is showing at Mitchell Fine Art, 86 Arthur St Fortitude Valley, Brisbane until September 23. Despite the title of this book, it is not going to make you laugh. It is a compulsive and harrowing read about Jewish history, the dysfunctional nation of Israel and its people, where the political is heartbreakingly personal. The narrative covers two hours of a stand-up comic's routine, albeit an unusual one where Dovaleh Greenstein spews forth the horrors that have comprised his life. This is a Winner story of bone deep pain, of grief, loss 2017 and a country that has lost its way. Man Booker A story of lies, betrayal, treachery, International survival and guilt. It is about Prize recognising the value of a human life and soul that has undergone such suffering. It is a short book which encapsulates what it is to be human, the nature of relationships, politics and trauma. Highly recommended as a book you need to read although it may not be what you want to read.

Balcony Over Jerusalem is a fascinating personal journey through the wonders and dangers of the Middle East by Australian journalist, John Lyons. From the sheer excitement of arriving in Jerusalem with his wife and eight-year-old son, to the fall of dictators and his gripping account of what it feels like to be taken by Egyptian soldiers. By telling the story of his family travelling through the region, this book is extremely readable and entertaining, full of both humour and colour. It is sometimes dazzling in its detail, sometimes tragic. Lyons explains the Middle East through everyday life and experiences - his son's school, his wife's friends and his own dealings with a range of people over six years. A gripping memoir of life in Jerusalem from one of Australia's most experienced Middle East correspondents.

Ruben is a young boy surviving in a futuristic derelict city. He ventures out every day to find what he needs to survive but it is getting harder and harder. He has to go deeper and deeper into the heart of Block City. Escape is essential. A quiet week I

T WAS A RELATIVELy peaceful week for Malcolm Turnbull. He had a few things to do: he re-announced a feasibility study into his over-the-horizon plans for Snowy 2.0 and spoke severely to electricity retailers who promised him that they would wrote letters to their customers in three or four months, and if the punters absolutely insisted, they would find ways of overcharging them not so much, at least for the moment. He dropped in on the west to try and stop the citizens of Kalgoorlie from drinking too much and gave the beleaguered Sandgropers a bit of a gee up. And as always there was Kim Jong un to berate in almost Shorten-esque terms, and a new front in the Philippines for the war on terror. But because there was not much real action from the government, the side issues predominated, and that meant same sex marriage and the voluntary public survey. On this, Turnbull has, as he promised, kept a low (indeed, almost subsonic) presence. He has not actually campaigned for a yes vote; the most that can be claimed is that he is clearly in favour of it, at least for himself and his wife. But more importantly, and disappointingly, he has signally failed to slap down the mendacious nonsense already emanating from the No campaign. Some of his ministers – Simon Birmingham, George Brandis and Christopher Pyne, to name the most prominent – have put their heads above the parapet but our fearless leader is apparently busy in the trenches, attempting to dig his way out of trouble. He is happy to mumble about the need for an open debate, and even if some misleading and hurtful things might be said, well, that’s free speech. Perhaps it is; but that has not always been his position. Compare and contrast, as a more bolder and robust leader once used to say, Turnbull’s performance on election night 2013. Then he was incandescent with rage over what he saw as an outrageous lie.. Bill Shorten’s Mediscare campaign was almost too awful to mention, but he mentioned it loudly and often, ranting and raving about the need for truth in politics. But times change; now, it appears, there is to be open slather, it is entirely legitimate to slander, defame, humiliate and offend the LGBTIQ community and their children in the name of – well, what? It is still not entirely clear where we are going, and why. What is becoming apparent is that the opponents of same sex marriage have reserved the right to ignore the plebiscite altogether if it doesn’t go their way. There are two get out clauses. The first is that if the yes vote gets up, it will be up to a private member – not the government of the day – to move a bill to implement it. A free vote will eventually ensue, but according to the conservatives, that means that the whole issue will be a clean slate – the so-called plebiscite for which they fought so tenaciously will be regarded as irrelevant. They will vote against same sex marriage anyway, just as they always intended. But long before that point, there will be endless attempts to amend any legislation to give exemptions from any new law to protect religious freedom – by which they actually mean religious privilege. And Turnbull, it appears, is happy to go along with their machinations and procrastinations.

Anything to avoid taking a real stand –anything to avoid revisiting the Malcolm Turnbull who once held serious beliefs and convictions. And perhaps it is just as well, when you think back to his election night outburst. This was arrogant, petulant and utterly inappropriate and seriously unlovable – but it was authentic. We saw a glimpse of the real Malcolm, and we didn’t like what we saw. The urbane lawyer was suddenly naked, stripped of the briefs painstakingly prepared for him by the conservatives of the party room and the timorous spin doctors in his office, and he let it all hang out. Restraint, control, the moderation that had become his hallmarks were swept aside in a moment of passionate rage. It has been completely different to his demeanour in parliament, in which the confected outrage about Shorten – the socialist, the Stalinist, the most dangerous lefty in generations -- is patently unconvincing. And deservedly so, because the messages it is intended to convey are totally contradictory. On the one hand we are warned that Shorten will destroy civilisations we know it, but on the other we are assured that nothing Shorten says can be believed – so presumably it doesn’t matter how radical his policies are, they won’t actually happen. unsurprisingly, the opposition sees the government’s campaign as risible; more worryingly, the polls suggest that the voters agree with the assessment and Turnbull’s own troops are showing major signs of bedwetting. The answer, according to the primitives of Newscorp, is to lurch even further to the right to try and shore up the dwindling band of ageing reactionaries who are considered the Liberal Party’s base. These are, we are assured, the silent majority – presumably silent because most of them are dead. But, as delcons keep telling us, Turnbull is not one of them, never has been and never will be. In other words, he should act in an even phonier fashion than he already does in the hope that, finally, bullshit may baffle brains and the public mainstream will succumb to this transparent artifice. The alternative is that he could try and revert to the old Malcolm; go a little further than merely refurbishing the leather jacket and becoming serious about climate change and same sex marriage. But even if he did (and he obviously won’t) it would be too little too late; after two years of recantation and denial another backflip would be seen not as sincerity but desperation – just another tactic to turn the polls around before the fateful 30th Newspoll that will blow what credibility he has left out of the water. The ugly truth is that Malcolm Turnbull is caught between the swamp and the cesspool: people have stopped listening to him now, but if he changes, they may like him even less. It may have been a quiet week during the break from parliament, but one short break does not make a spring, and this one has definitely not been a long time in politics. And now it's time for Malcolm Turnbull to get back to parliament and the relentless quicksand which continues to engulf him.

Proceeds from the day go to help fund sending every Maleny High School student to the two-day driver education programme ‘ROADCRAFT’. The program offers a terrific day out with loads of activities for dogs and humans alike! Races to run and watch, displays, live music and more… A maximum of 15 dogs will compete in each heat. The races are approximately 80m (unless otherwise stated) and The dog that crosses the finish line first will be declared the winner, irrespective of the route taken or other canine interference! A prize presentation will follow the final of each event, and any dog may compete in as many races for which it is eligible, however, may only win ONE first prize on the day. In the event of a dog taking first position previously, they will be passed over for the next “runner up”. For Mapleton's Aurora Johnston and Holly Balch, training starts in Term 2, building into Term 3 where six regattas are held at Wyaralong Dam, near Beaudesert.

Joanne Lane, a much-travelled, Brisbane-based photojournalist, whose candid and spontaneous photography concentrates on showing real people in real settings, will be the featured artist in the Reflection Gallery, Montville uniting Church, through September and October. This display features images from her experience walking the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage trail in Spain. Jo's documentary and lifestyle photographic work is designed to equip, empower and educate people to an awareness of the needs and concerns of various groups of people around the world especially the marginalised. Outspoken presents

The Gold Coast Chamber Orchestra, a talented group of 22 string players, will be performing at Flaxton Gardens at 2pm on Sunday October 15, with a cocktail reception held after the concert. The programme, English Landscapes, has an emphasis on English composers such as Holt’s St Paul’s Suite and Benjamin Britten’s Simple Symphony. The orchestra has also commissioned a new work, Arethusa’s Watering, by 22 -year-old Brisbane composer, John Rotar. He has also composed works for The Australian Voices and is the Southern Cross Soloists’ Next Gen composer. This weekend of orchestral music is not to be missed.

OST OF uS ARE so new to this land, that we literally have no idea what any of those plants are that make up the landscape that adorns the hinterland. When I was fortunate to start working with the native forests about twenty-five years ago, the trick was where to start in working out what was what. Fortunately, there is an ever-growing range of books to assist in you learning more about our local, flora and fungi – a range we specialize in at Forest Heart Eco-Nursery. Recently I presented at the Subtropical Forest Ecology Course organized by Hinterland Bush Links at Bellthorpe, it’s great to see a growing community of people keen to learn more about their local flora and ecosystems I feel very fortunate to be able to participate in the cultural change that this signifies. Crucial to our living in this land is a need to learn more about it - to know, understand and empathize with our local ecosystems. The firsts people of this land have many tens of thousands of years of living with, understanding and being of this country. People lived within and were part of the native ecosystems. Ecosystem understanding was fundamental to day to day life. We need to remember and come back to this. We do not live outside of nature and we

are very much part of and dependent on nature. When we think we are separate, that’s when things can start to fall apart. Before I get carried away on too much of a philosophical tangent – where was I? Oh yes learn more about your local flora, fauna, fungi and land management! Come and have a chat for great advice on local plants, native gardens, revegetation and regeneration. If you haven’t already, you can also join our Friends of Forest Heart and get our enewsletter with regular updates on workshops, books and plants. The trick to learning more about your local flora (that I realized long ago) is you can’t learn everything in the first week, be happy that with hard work and dedication you may only learn one or two new plants a week, for the first few months, then hopefully the momentum builds like a snowball and you’re an amateur botanist in no time at all, well maybe a few years… After a few weeks break for holidays and renovations were open again as of the 1st of September and crossing fingers for a bit of rain to help get spring plantings of to a great start, see you soon!

Never a Dull Moment

uGuST WAS A BuSy month for Barung members and others committed to our wonderful environment. The annual Wildflower Festival provided an opportunity to enjoy guided walks in our conservation reserves and national parks and to discover many hidden jewels. Not all wildflower displays are confined to Western Australia! Three inspiring speakers at the Sunshine Coast Conservation Forum suggested to us a variety of ways to engage young people in environmental activities and have fun at the same time; and of the support provided to international park rangers who often work in very dangerous situations. Then there was Tim Low, an expert in writing about nature conservation in a style accessible to all readers. His most recent book ‘Where Song Began: Australia’s Birds and How They Changed the World’ is well worth reading. We have an amazing diversity of bird life compared with the northern

hemisphere; very much linked to the structure and diversity of our native flowers. The Noosa Wallum Festival completed August activities but check the Barung website for activities in September. There will also be displays, talks and a plant sale at Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden on September 9th and later in the month the annual spring Native Flower Show and Plants Sale at Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens. This is an opportunity to learn even more about our local plants and perhaps find something to add to your garden. In the meantime, it is still dry but the bottlebrushes have been flowering and many nectar feeders from tiny Scarlet Honeyeaters to much larger Little Friar Birds have been enjoying the bounty. Small parties of Scrub Wrens have been checking out the flowers of ground cover grevilleas and looking for insects in the leaf litter.

Maintaining a dense, low layer of plants, preferably with at least a scattering of prickly foliage, is really important for these vulnerable ground feeders. Dense, layered habitat will definitely favour the small birds. Just avoid being too tidy.

Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said, “The plan outlines the development and management of our network for the next five years,” Cr McKay said. “Our ongoing challenge for our skate and BMx network is to maintain an adequate level of provision, service and maintenance across each facility. “The plan is an important document as it provides a facility condition audit report, a benchmarking analysis and a range of recommendations for our regional skate and BMx network for the next five years.” The plan includes recommendations for 25 parks, covering Beerwah, Eudlo, Kenilworth. Landsborough, Maleny, Mapleton, Mooloolah, Nambour and Palmwoods.

HEN I FIRST discovered arboriculture in its technical form 21 years ago, I had a humble vision – to become Maleny’s tree gardener. Humble, that is, compared to my other dreams of Rock super-stardom, or world domination, or a combination of both. I feel like I have achieved that goal some years ago, and now we manage the trees of the Plateau much like you or your gardener manage your Hydrangeas and Azaleas. using modern climbing techniques and vertical access equipment we prune, shape, and if necessary remove, these woody giants. We have also moved to battery technology, so most of our cutting tools are now either electric or hand powered, extremely sharp Japanese and European equipment, making for a quieter, less polluting operation.

I have taken on an amazing young man, Jackson, who has been training and working with me for 7 years. His work ethic and safety consciousness are second to none, and I have begun to let him lead an incredible team of young people to tackle some of our work. I often hear disparaging remarks about young people, but if our team is anything to go by, our future is in good hands. Check out the trees as you turn into Balmoral lookout. FEW MONTHS AGO, it was announced in the Hinterland Times that Mapleton State School would sadly have to remove a large Bunya tree in the grounds, due to expensive annual maintenance costs and large falling Bunya nuts causing a public liability hazard to passers-by. However, the school reached out to the community to find a way to save this important Aboriginal symbol of abundance on the Blackall Range. Mapleton State School is now very happy to announce that a combined working group, made up of representatives from the school, parents, Steve Irwin Way Forest Group and Nambour community members have found a solution.

The Outdoor Education Centre, Queensland Baptists’ QCCC Mapleton, have kindly offered to harvest the nuts annually in November, with the help of a cherry-picker (donated by JC Hire) that the Mapleton and District Community Association (MADCA) use to install the Christmas lights in the same month. This combination of community-mindedness and generosity means the tree will stand for many years to come, a constant reminder of what we can achieve when we work together to care for things. The staff, parents and students from Mapleton State School are truly grateful to everyone involved in saving the Bunya tree.

His article last month on medical marijuana stirred many expletives that reflect the frustration of individuals and families when trying to access treatment for conditions like chronic pain and cancer. Wendy Hayes told us that: The personal experience of a considerable proportion of the Australian population contrasts with some of Dr Edwin Kruys’ statements regarding adverse effects from cannabis. Many benefit from use of cannabis in treatment of their diverse medical conditions, including chronic pain, with few significant downsides, apart from criminality and expense. Cannabis legalization in overseas jurisdictions has been followed by overall harm reduction, including fewer deaths from opioid overdose, reduced overall opioid prescribing, and lower numbers of deaths from car accidents. We have had many thousands of years to recognize harms arising from cannabis use; it appears to be one of the safest substances regularly used by humans for medicinal purposes. It is indeed desirable for health professionals to provide their patients with useful advice regarding sensible use of cannabis in medicine. And from Tania:

They talk about tolerance, dependency, and side effects of marijuana use. What about the tolerance, dependency and side effects of conventional prescription drugs?? After being diagnosed with a chronic pain syndrome in 2007, I can tell you that I have experienced all of these things from the drugs Doctors have prescribed. It is fitting this month, that Dr Kruys chose to talk about deprescribing and Marisa Kliese asks us to "heed the clarion call" and do our own research about issues impacting on our health: Our understanding of GMO’s, mandatory vaccinations, and treatment options for serious conditions is vital, and the information is there, we just need to look for it. The trouble is the “benefits” of some options are loudly broadcast and the dangers are not. Medication: sometimes less is more

T IS GOOD to review long-term medications regularly with your doctor. Over time the need for a certain treatment may change, for example when getting older or more ill. Sometimes symptoms have stabilised or resolved, the treatment is not working anymore or adverse effects outweigh the benefits. Other reasons for a medication review are recurrent falls, confusion, increasing frailty and end-of-life situations. Many medical conditions require treatment with multiple drugs. This increases the risk of adverse effects and interactions and reducing the dose or amount of medications can be beneficial. Apart from the health benefits, cutting back on the number of tablets also saves costs. ‘Deprescribing’ is the process of reducing unnecessary medications and should be considered as part of a

regular medication review. It is usually done as a trial, by carefully tapering the dose, one medicine at a time. Assistance by a doctor is recommended as deprescribing may cause temporary withdrawal effects. Close monitoring may be needed and not all medications can be stopped. Research into deprescribing has mainly been done in elderly people taking multiple drugs. I believe it is not unreasonable to apply the same principles to younger people, even if they are on a smaller amount of longterm medications. I always find it rewarding when we manage to reduce the amount or dose of someone’s medications and most of my patients seem to be equally pleased. Sometimes less is more. Wendy Rosenfeldt Countless people learn Transcendental Meditation and report that they appreciate their partner, family and friends more than before. They say it is easier to see the good in them rather than focusing on their negative characteristics. One reason for this is that when we are happier and feel less stressed, we are less bothered by the surrounding environment. When we are uptight or under pressure the traffic is annoying, people are irritating and our patience is at its lowest. For parents the concern for the mess of our child’s creation can eclipse our appreciation of the beautiful artwork they have made. Our frustration at our partner’s ability to do something just the way we would like it can spoil our delight at their initiative to cook us dinner or plan a holiday. When we are in love our object of affection can do no wrong. While infatuation can obscure discrimination and fade over time, love coming from within a state of inner fulfilment only grows as we evolve and produces awareness of the deeper levels of life. When our awareness is refined we have the ability to perceive the finest level of existence in ever object of perception. The most subtle level of life is present at the quantum level of the universe. That level where everything is

in its most infinite form. We don’t immediately achieve subatomic perception but as we expand the conscious capacity of the mind and become familiar with transcendental levels we can see a level of greater vibrancy and beauty in everything. As progressively subtler values of life open to our perception we see objects as increasingly intimate and familiar. Our love for all around us spontaneously flows. We begin to experience a deeper connection with everything around us. It is a state of universal love and is not dependant on need for anything back from the exchange. In the state of bliss consciousness it is impossible to have a negative thought. People may seek this state through artificial means such as drugs but the effect is short lived and generally puts the user into a worse state than before. By regularly purifying the body and expanding the mind through the experience of transcending the results come progressively and are permanent. HESE ARE CERTAINLy interesting times, and there are quite a few topics that are nudging people awake. The problem is that there is one important fact to consider within all the challenges that are facing individuals today, underlying and connecting many of these issues is one important point: the loss of freedom of choice and often the inability to access credible information to enable one to understand new changes that are being put in place without real and objective consultations. One way to stop individuals accessing information is to label everything as conspiracy theory, and yes there are some ungrounded individuals and even those who insert erroneous information to deliberately confuse and disengage individuals who start to question or research some vital areas which need understanding. There are many issues that require our cooperative, and unified attention, however the mainstream media seems to be very efficient in throwing up information or opinion polls that really just draw our attention away from the issues at hand. Legislation with regard to Smart Meters is being forced on everyone even though many scientists and highly educated professors etc, recommend caution and warn against their use. Likewise with the implementation of 5G, the possible negative affect on health and well being are being strongly broadcast to inform the public about the danger to their health. However this information which needs to be looked at is often not

covered by the general media and once again individuals need to do their own research. It is time to grow up, to deeply research the things which are going to bring about an effect for a very very long time and which may even change our lives in negative ways forever.
