edit and design, plus meet the printing deadlines, for those first editions. Producing each newspaper was like birthing a baby. Except the same day it emerged, I would plan the next! Without fail, out on the first of each month. Heatley quickly built a website presence, making sure we could proof and produce each spanking-new edition online. So much so, we produced three whilst lapping Australia. Our four children helped with deliveries, put up with my photo-taking, telling me names for photo captions – knowing not to disturb me whilst I tried to make the paper ‘jigsaw’ at the end of each month. The editor role was a natural progression, it is easy to write about something you love, like our beautiful community. Where can you hold babies at playgroup, report on the Bay to Bay Yacht Race or learn-tosail classes whilst cruising; photograph my kids (and their peers) playing sport or at assembly, or meet so many wonderful locals – and call it work?

Heatley was our sales executive, after starting his sales career at The Chronicle in Toowoomba. Together, our local newspaper was awarded ‘Best Newspaper’ for the Queensland Country Press Association, raking in awards in advertising and journalistic excellence. This was thanks to all of you – our contributors, advertisers, volunteers and community members. I feel privileged that each month I was first to read the Police Beat, IGA Sport’s Report (even though Heatley had to help me understand who was what) and lobby for issues for our towns

(like the overgrown Cotton Tree at the lookout!). I also personally thank our team members from over the years: creatives Darren Baker and Sally Joyce, Wayne Davy and his tech expertise, Victoria McGuin’s proofing, Barb Rees with her beautiful stories, Lee McCarthy and Jess Milne with their flair with words, Jed Elmer’s considered prose, and the talented Brooke Bignall. HE RAINBOW BEACH Community Centre Committee has been passionately thinking of ways to give back to the broad community. The first of its kind Rainbow Beach Spring Fest is all about music: roots, reggae, traditional and folk music. “We aim to make this the third annual successful live music event in town. Big events are good for the locals and for tourism,” said President Elisa Seul. “The purpose is to connect the community through music. We are driven to create an unforgettable experience that helps to foster and enrich the cultural and economic scene in the region.” The festival is a celebration of freedom, love and beauty through signature sounds. A thrilling line-up will launch the Rainbow Beach Spring Fest, with internationally recognised artists: Oka, Hat Fitz and Cara, Fred Leone and The Lyrical. The performers will push you to feel the rhythm, explore culture and discover music. Saturday September 4, the Centre Block adjacent the Community Hall will become alive, the gates will open at 2pm. The Spring Fest is a family-friendly event; by purchasing the tickets you will also help the not-for-profit

association to fundraise money to improve the venue. “The hall building needs some improvements on top of ordinary maintenance, we are investing in the Spring Fest to reinforce our community spirit and move forward with our projects,” President Elisa explained. Commemorate Vietnam Veterans Day R

AINBOW BEACH RSL Sub-Branch will commemorate Veterans Day by conducting a Service to honour and remember the sacrifices and service of all those Australians who served their country during peace, peacekeeping missions and war. This year is of historical importance for the Australian Defence Force, being the 100th Anniversary of the Royal Australian Air Force and the 80th Anniversary of the ‘Rats of Tobruk’.

Veterans Day was originally known as Long Tan Day, chosen to commemorate the men of D Company 6RAR who fought in the Battle of Long Tan in 1966 during the Vietnam War. This year marks the 55th Anniversary. Rainbow Beach The service will be held at the Rainbow Beach Cenotaph commencing at 11am, all members of the community are cordially invited to attend and pay their respects.

K’gari fires - where to now? A

N ILLEGAL CAMPFIRE started the Fraser Island K’gari bushfire on October 14, 2020. During a two month response, with a record amount of water dropped on a fire in Queensland, 85 000 hectares of the World Heritage-listed island was burnt. Last month, Rainbow Beach Commerce and Tourism (RBCT) learnt about outcomes of the bushfires and recommendations, as well as rationales for campfire bans at Teewah Beach. Representatives from Queensland Parks and Wildlife (QPWS), Rural Fire Service (RFS), Department of Environment and Science (DES), Inspector-General Emergency Management (IGEM) and Gympie Regional Council (GRC) attended. Here is a summary from the night. Out of the K’gari Fraser Island Bushfire Review, 38 recommendations were tabled in Parliament, with work ongoing. Locality Specific Fire Management Groups • QPWS said they initiated a lot of those local area fire groups years back • Have been around since 2008, now meet twice instead of once a year • Broadened scope - were 8-10 now 25-30 members • A community member has developed a plan for their community • More firebreaks on Orchid Beach and more water tanks installed for fire suppression around those communities • Plans are in place not just about reducing fuel, but other measures, so better placed to manage in future; for instance, remove barriers around tenure/reduce bureaucracy • Butchulla have conducted more walk-throughs and found more heritage areas, planning more hazard reduction burning at the right time • All the businesses on the Island have agreed to install fittings that are compatible with the RFS hoses, so there will faster access to water for firefighters “We try to be an enabler, you need the right people around the table to talk about reducing risk. The work Happy Valley did saved their township.” ‘Why aren’t aircraft putting out fire?’ and ‘Why didn’t we hit it earlier and harder?’ • This country has complex vegetation - peat swamps burn underground for many weeks and months, there’s understory, canopy, heat storing in banksia, scribbly gum and trees with massive hollows • Over 13.3 million litres of water didn’t put it out - but we were able to steer from critical infrastructure, and it didn’t penetrate the rainforest areas “Three major fire fronts, in February - ultimately it rained

and helped us out” “After 300 000 years - the island never had chemicals applied. What will happen to its world heritage values, when we suffocate oxygen out of the systems. “We won’t use retardants unless life or property is at stake. A lot of work went on behind the scenes. “Protection of life and property is our priority. There is still risk and still work to do.” Controlled Burns • Lots of fire line work and 14 planned burns, some will come off the list as they were impacted during the fire • Managing fire breaks takes up a lot of resources “Four burns must get done this year - already had some goes at those. Conditions were a bit moist. Normally these are conducted in May/early June - however, the last three years, those months have been continuously wet. Now it will be July before we can get started to be completed by August.” Forecast recovery • The tall open forest is very fire resistant and recovers quite well, banks and woodlands burns well with black smoke and a good capacity to recover • There are different grasses, sedge swamps were 49% impacted - limited to moderate long term impact of recovering well • Pest management - cats targeting threatened species ground parrots, etc. • Coastal dunes sheoaks are not fire tolerant - they don’t recover well. If they do, they take a long time. What concerns us is the potential catastrophic outcomes

Teewah Beach fire bans • Teewah has same coastal dunes with catastrophic damage to the foreshore • Fire bans are in place to protect the pristine NP world heritage values • If foredunes are scorched their ability to come back is not great - 5,500 hectare 55% of the National Park in that area “If that doesn’t recover, people are not going to want to come here, because they will be camping in the desert.” Investment in Fraser Island • Millions of dollars invested in the island each year - in the last year a million dollars was spent on equipment/ tractors alone • A sustainable visitor capacity study has commenced “We’re invested in this region as well - we want people to keep coming.”

Rainbow Beach Police Beat by Senior Constable Mike Brantz

HIS MONTH WILL see the return of Road Safety Week Queensland, which will run from August 16 - 20. This year the theme of the week is ‘Education – making sure our young drivers know that their actions on the road can have direct consequences’. Now, as the name suggests, Road Safety Week (RSW) runs for a week, but the task of educating young drivers seems to be a never-ending commitment – with Teewah Beach continuing to provide local police with plenty of ‘students’. You may recall an article I wrote in October 2020 titled ‘Attitude is Everything’ in which I asserted that poor driver attitude was the major issue facing police on Teewah Beach. Well, if the last couple of weekends (at the time of writing) are anything to go by, it’s still the major issue -

with local police confronted by numerous displays of poor driving behaviour in the form of hoon driving, drink driving and dangerous driving. Five young blokes will front Gympie Magistrates Court later this month – three for drink driving, one for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and one for both driving without due care, and unlicensed driving. Other motorists received traffic infringement notices for a variety of offences including ‘speeding’, ‘failing to wear a seatbelt’ and ‘not having proper control of their vehicle’. All the drivers intercepted by police for committing offences were young males less than 25 years old. Sadly, many of these drivers have little regard for traffic or other laws and are actually proud of their efforts to break them - which not only puts themselves at risk, but also the other innocent drivers, campers and beach goers, who are simply

trying to enjoy the area. The Department of Transport and Main Roads website states that young drivers are over-represented in motor vehicle crashes for several reasons including; dangerous risk-taking behaviour, driver inexperience, alcohol and speeding – all of which are applicable to Teewah Beach. Just add a bit of peer pressure to the mix and you have a bunch of blokes trying to outdo each other with acts of reckless stupidity that could easily end in a tragic outcome. If you are the parent of a young driver can I urge you to speak to your child about safe driving practices before it’s too late. As for Road Safety Week, you’ll see us out and about enforcing the road rules and trying to educate young drivers on the Cooloola Coast roads and beaches – like we do all year round…

Slowing it down will not solve the problem

HE ROAD SAFETY PETITION, proposed by our local Member Tony Perrett, is progressing well and being well received by tourists to our wonderful coast. But there are many stories of near misses caused by senseless driving on our roads. Tony Stewart has been pounding pavements and visiting campers to ask for signatures. He firmly believes with the State Government promoting tourism, there is also a need to promote safety for those unfamiliar with our regional roads.

Tony said, “It appears that patience is a huge issue, hence the need for some pull off areas and the odd overtaking lane.” “I have heard (and I don’t know who has suggested this) that the Government may lower the speed limit to 90 km per hour. Can you believe this? How would this work?” Tony says it would create longer lines of traffic, more passing on double lines and more accidents. He says, “Just go around and ask any caravanner how they can pull over off the verge... to help traffic flow.”

HE WILDFLOWERS of Cooloola are emerging in an array of pinks, purples, yellows and whites. We have artists joining us to help us appreciate the beauty of nature for one special day 8.30am - 4.30pm, Saturday August 7. The day will include talks and displays at Rainbow Beach Community Hall, field visits to good wildflower sites and a range of workshops. You may learn to draw with natural inks, observe nature closely and record in a journal, or make a booklet of illustrations. We are also launching a new 56-page booklet of wildflowers and 14 walks around Cooloola for viewing them. It’s amazing what a range of habitats we have to explore, from open wallum

heathland with spikes shooting up from grass trees, to shady rainforests, marshy fens and coastal wetlands, as well as eucalypt forests. Participants may choose to learn more about native plants, how to make marks on paper, or just enjoy the experience in different natural settings. Registration for the day is $30, which includes the introductory and informative talks, field visits, lunch and the booklet. Morning and afternoon workshops with artists cost $30 or $40 each. Railways have always been the perfect venue for a rattling good murder mystery. This month, the Mary Valley Rattler will host its first ever murder mystery train tour, during which guests will need to uncover a murder most foul. Dress in your finery for the event, which will transport you back to 1920, when the glitterati of Hollywood are invited on board for a gala soiree with a drinks cart, only for a murder to derail the festivities at Amamoor Station. Who did it? Each passenger will become a character in the drama, and can dress accordingly. Everyone will receive a special name for the journey, along with event money to bribe or blackmail, and an ‘accusation form’ that they will use to smoke out the murderer. Passengers use the return journey to hone their investigative skills for the big reveal over a seated dinner in Gympie Station’s Rusty Rails Café. The clues will be everywhere. There will be prizes for the passenger who solves the murder first, and also for best dressed and richest player as a result of their wheeling and dealing with the event money. President of Australian Native Animals Rescue and Rehabilitation Association (ANARRA), Lesley Swift said, “We’re encouraging anyone interested in learning how to rescue and care for injured, sick or orphaned wildlife to come along on Saturday

August 21 from 10am until 3pm. “You’ll learn about how to rescue and contain wildlife, how to assess a sick or injured animal and what to do from there. “Spring is peak breeding season for native wildlife and the time of year that the majority of wildlife comes in to care,” said Lesley. Three things… I was asked the other day what THE most important thing is for our township and coast to bring more people to our beautiful region, again and again. There is plenty on the list: I would love a wetlands boardwalk and track behind Hakea Place towards the industrial area; a foreshore walk from the SLSC tower to the Shores; a bike track to Carlo Point; weekly trivia nights; more land opening up; COVID eradication (or at least lockdowns and border closures to disappear), and world peace. Here are THREE things that are ‘low hanging fruit’ we and our council can grasp and action right now!

More housing available for families and workers

Become RV Friendly Towns I have put it to Council again, when will the 2019 Draft Regional RV strategy be approved and put into practice? Here’s what we were told: “The draft RV Strategy was presented to and discussed with Council earlier this year. Work is ongoing. The RV Strategy will be ready for review by Council by October 2021. “The first stage of works will commence later this year. The works will focus on delivering consistency across all the region’s RV parks with improved basic infrastructure such as signage, rubbish bin facilities and dog bag dispensers.” I also asked about the Gympie Showgrounds. Council advised the funding allocated to Tozer Street (The Rattler) for an RV site was not transferable to the Showgrounds. At this stage there is no funding for an RV site at the showgrounds, however Council is looking at all options. If Council was looking at all options, they would realise that a huge number of RV travellers don’t require facilities. It doesn’t have to cost Council anything! You can even find volunteers who would love to act as caretaker if needed. Systems could be set up so fees go directly to Council. If consistency is important to Council re RV parks - then make sure our coastal towns are also included in provision of budget or freedom camping areas. There are great options for camping areas, close to town centres, that would increase visitation across all businesses. It has been proven again and again - these travellers spend money, and they avoid towns that don’t provide a lower cost option for overnight stays. Here’s what we need to qualify as a registered RV Friendly Town: 3 appropriate parking within the town centre, with access to shopping area/groceries (we just need signage!) 3 short-term, low-cost overnight parking (24/48 hour) for self-contained RVs, close to the CBD 3 potable water 3 free dump point The only thing we would need to supply on the coast is overnight parking areas! Any community group behind this would not need to fundraise again! Win win.

Let’s roll out some of Noosa’s initiatives now. The increase in Short Term Rental Accommodation is pushing families out of our towns, our schools and workplaces. People have also been complaining to the Community News that their once quiet street is now filled with “party houses” - a resident’s nightmare. Accountability is a priority. Here are some of the strategies we’ve discussed at length in the May Community News. Please Council, let’s have some action: • Applications and annual reviews • Local contact person to manage • Fire and safety standards • Guest code of conduct • Development incentives • No holiday letting in residential zones

Bring back the views Not everyone is blessed with views of our beautiful coast from their balcony. I firmly believe that a look out should be just that. A place to see the views. For the majority of the year, our lookout near the propeller does not deliver on what its name promises. Gympie Regional Council has advised that Cotton Tree works will commence on Monday August 2 on the headland. The question is, will the cotton tree be trimmed at chest or head height like the last few times they get a cherry picker here OR will it actually make a difference for more that a week or so - a prune to knee height? As you can see, the Cotton Tree keeps coming back regardless. Trim it right, and the expensive cherry picker is not needed as much. Perhaps we’d be able to see the view from the plinth and coastline map (near the rainbow steps)? Or the boardriders memorial could have a view again? The viewing platform needs attention also. It is great that Council is working on beautifying the town and maintaining gardens - but please get that Cotton Tree back under control!

CITY GIRL and country boy met at a work picnic at Burleigh Heads, and the rest is history! 60 years ago on July 15, 1961, Ray and Lil Kahl were married at St Luke’s Church, Buranda. When they met, Lil said, “Ray was an electrician in those days in Brisbane, I was a secretary at an insurance company. Well, my dad used to work with Ray!” Said Ray, “I was born in Rockhampton and later lived in Ogmore, a small coal mining town north of Marlborough before moving to Brisbane to finish my schooling.” Ray was Plant Manager for Coca Cola Bottles in Brisbane for 35 years. “I swept floors, cleaned bathrooms and raised the kids. They turned out all right!” Lil smiled. Their three kids are all teachers. Narelle and Janine remain in Brisbane, with their son Paul at Pottsville. The Kahls have seven grandchildren and one great grandchild, just three months old. They settled into Rainbow Beach 20 years ago, and although it was a big change, they love the people here. “Ray likes it here.” Lil shared, “I like shopping. We’ve been coming up here for years on annual holidays. We were in a caravan for a while, bought a unit - then built a house.” I asked for a tip for a long lasting relationship? Ray was quick: “Keep your mouth shut,” he said, “No, really!” Lil laughed, “We made it this far, we’re going all right!”

Their style of authentic blues combines the original 1930s - ‘40s acoustic delta blues, and the later electric guitar mastery of legends like BB King, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Albert Collins, JJ Cale, Eric Clapton, Hendrix and Jimmy Page. HE AGM of the Cooloola Coast Local Ambulance Committee will be held at the Rainbow Beach Ambulance Station at 3.30pm Thursday August 19. The purpose of the AGM is to present the committee’s annual reports, financial statements and budget proposals. Local Ambulance Committees act as a voice for their community, providing valuable feedback on ambulance service delivery. The meeting is open to the public. The Biennial General Meeting (BGM) will be held immediately after the close of the AGM. The purpose of the BGM is to elect new members to the Local Ambulance Committee. All eligible persons are encouraged to attend. If you are interested in being a member of the LAC you must be: • Eighteen (18) years or over • A permanent resident of the area serviced by the Cooloola Coast Ambulance Stations, or • A permanent resident of Queensland who works in the area serviced by the Cooloola Coast Ambulance Stations. New paint job enlivens social hub T

HE TIN CAN BAY RSL looks great after a recent paint job undertaken by contractors, First Response Maintenance Solutions, for the Gympie Regional Council. The maintenance of the RSL is the joint responsibility of the Gympie Regional Council and the Tin Can Bay RSL Sub Branch, by agreement, with the council responsible for external building maintenance and the RSL responsible for the internal maintenance. As RSL President Don Holland said, “The RSL facility is one of the social hubs of Tin Can Bay. Hundreds of locals and visitors use the facility for a range of events every month including the Saturday Markets, Saturday lunches, Sunday BBQs, veterans and community morning teas, dance lessons and training courses. “We’re proud to see the RSL looking so good after being newly painted in heritage colours.” The professionalism of the contractors was apparent during a recent inspection of the work. David Weissman has been a professional painter for 24 years and takes great pride in the quality of his work. David said, “I got my love for painting from my father Bernie. ”He worked on the Snowy Mountains Scheme when he first came to Australia and has been a professional painter ever since.” Sarah Conrad is a painter’s assistant and has only been working with the contractors for three months. Sarah said, “I love this job and really enjoy this particular contract travelling to country towns working on the RSL in Tin Can Bay and other public facilities in Wolvi, Kandanga and Kandanga Creek.” Well, we love your work David and Sarah – it really looks great!

INCE OUR LAST REPORT, we have been reasonably quiet, with just $500 sent to Fencing for Fires in NE Victoria and $1000 in vouchers to Drought Angels, to go into the NSW mouse plague area. I have 50 large food hampers packed that were also headed to NSW, but that is now on hold due to travel restrictions. I do

want to return home without any hassles. As I need to clear this out of my shed this load could go to the Drought Angels at Chinchilla. Thank you to Ian in Belle Court Rainbow Shores, and all anonymous donors who have dropped goods at Cooloola Real Estate at Woolies complex. Our bottle and can collection is going well and thanks to Big 4 at Carlo Point, TCB Holiday Park, Ace Caravan Park, TCB Country Club, TCB Yacht

Club, and others in Tin Can Bay for your donations. This is only possible with the help of Wayne Kerle and Bay Auto, so thank you all. We have had around 10 big semi loads of hay donated to us, which is stuck on the NSW border due to restrictions. Where it goes now, who knows?? Our next run west (Longreach) won’t be till December with toys for kids, presents and Christmas cakes.

T HAS BEEN a busy month for our Probus Club. Fourteen members went to Lindols Macadamia Farm cafe at Goomboorian for morning tea - and came home happy and with goodies from the farm and other local businesses, bought from the display in their shop. The service was quick and pleasant. We plan to return again and avail ourselves of the opportunity of a farm tour. Lunch at the Silky Oaks Tea Gardens on a wet, cold day was held inside with a fire blazing making for a cosy atmosphere. We had been invited by the members of the Gympie-Widgee Probus Club and it was a great chance to renew friendships and begin new ones. John Macfarlane, Flotilla Commander of QF17 – Tin Can Bay Coast Guard, was the Guest Speaker at our

July meeting. John spoke of how the volunteers in the Coast Guard undertake search and rescue, and provide marine radio coverage, general boating information, and education and training for the public - all peppered with his personal tales of service. Meetings are held on each second Monday of the month at 2pm at the Sandcastle Motel in Tin Can Bay, and include a break for afternoon tea and a chat. Our Plant of the Month for August 2021 is Myoporum acuminatum. This is a shrub up to 1.5m growing in sandy or rocky coastal areas and commonly known as Boobialla. The white flowers appear in clusters most of the year followed by small purple fruit, a treat for many birds. This is a hardy plant, easily propagated from cuttings, will grow in full sun and can tolerate salt spray. It is common along the Cooloola Coast and on K’gari (Fraser Island). Cooloola City Farm Nursery is a cash-only organisation but this will change soon, located opposite the Community Centre on Tin Can Bay Road and is open 8am-3pm, Tuesday - Thursday. Streetlight repairs The recently constructed streetlights on Rainbow Beach Road between Clarkson Drive and Kirchner Avenue, including the pedestrian crossing, the crossing point on Wide Bay Esplanade and the car park adjacent to the Surf Lifesaving Club have been experiencing some faults since installation. Council is currently working with the contractor to address the faults. Council is investigating reported issues and will pass on to the appropriate external authority. Council encourages the community to report streetlights that are not working, especially if they present a safety concern to the community. The majority of streetlights in Rainbow Beach are controlled by Energex. Streetlight outages can be reported to apps.energex.com.au/epp/public/selfservice.

Patrolled Beach Swim in the flags in front of the Surf Lifesaving tower. Walk via the steps or walkway near the lookout and surf club, or drive onto Griffin Esplanade. 4WD beach access begins here.

Coloured Sands Visit the patrolled beach, near the surf tower or the lookout to see the 70 plus colours in our cliffs. From town, walk south 1km along the beach - for best colours 4WD or tour a further 9km. Remember it is a gazetted road.

Carlo Sand Blow Park at the top of Cooloola Drive, and walk 600m up from the car park or bushwalk about 2km from the National Parks Office for spectacular views of the Coloured Sands, Double Island Point, Tin Can Bay Inlet and hang gliders.

Poona Lake Drive to Bymien Picnic Area (2WD) via 3km gravel on the Freshwater Road, (off Rainbow Beach Road). It’s a 40 minute walk to reach the cool waters of Lake Poona through beautiful rainforest and carrol (grey myrtle) scrub.

Searys Creek Only 7km from town towards Gympie, with 2 waterholes, boardwalks, bridges and history – do read the sign and spot the creatures. Always cool on the hottest of days.

Rainbow Beach Headland A look out, a viewing platform, 2 playgrounds, a skatepark, BBQs and picnic facilities. See the whales from here in season and watch the surfers out the front. Take a photo at the Cherry Venture propeller.

Double Island Point Access via the 4WD only Great Beach Drive or Freshwater Track. See dolphins, whales (seasonal), manta rays, turtles and walk up to our historic lighthouse. It has the longest break in Australia -when the swell lines up.

Mudlo Rocks Wander here at low tide, play in rock pools and watch 4WDs navigate any exposed rocks. ALWAYS check conditions and ask locals before you 4WD - it is not always safe, even close to low tide.

Middle Rock When tides and conditions allow, the walk to Middle Rock and back is a beautiful way to check out the Coloured Sands. From here, vehicle permits are required and dogs are prohibited.

Inskip Point This peninsula is the gateway to Fraser Island, a favourite fishing spot and pet friendly camping grounds for generations. Only 15 minutes drive (2WD) from Rainbow Beach.

You can launch your boat at Norman Point and Crab Creek in Tin Can Bay or Carlo Point and Bullock Point near Rainbow Beach. All except Bullock Point offer toilet and scenic picnic facilities.

The company, CABN, proposes to build fully serviced accommodation at five sites along the Cooloola Great Walk, currently a beautiful, remote walking track between Rainbow Beach and Noosa. Power will be supplied to cabins and “glamping” tent structures by solar panels backed up by diesel generators. Aside from

the initial disturbance of the construction phase, there will be on-going impacts from heavy vehicle traffic through the National Park. Water, gas, diesel and supplies will be trucked in for guests who will pay approximately $800 per night for a guided walk package. Sewage, dirty linen and rubbish will be trucked out over sand tracks that now take only occasional Parks vehicles. ITH SCHOOL HOLIDAYS over the number of visitors has reduced, however there are still a lot of people travelling throughout Queensland and supporting regional attractions. Mystique has been missing now for three months, so it is probably unlikely he will return as Harmony seems to have taken over as the dominant male. We hope Mystique is strutting up the Straits gathering a new family. During the past few months visitors have had to step-toe through rocks on the beach

as the big tides swallowed up our sand. But on Monday, sand was dredged up into Dolphin Cove so visitors now have to climb up the sand hills. It is starting to settle well so hopefully we will have sand for a few months. The Dolphin Centre is an important education program to teach the young and old about the plight of our sea creatures from pollution within the waterways. We are really lucky within the Tin Can Bay Inlet that fishermen and boaties have been responsible people and not allow plastics and other rubbish to enter the waterways, though occasionally we do collect an empty plastic bait bag which has apparently blown out of a boat. secure and do not enter the waterways. I appreciate all the contributions our volunteers have made and some may take a break from time to time, so it is then we require backup. Thank you to those residents who have indicated to become volunteers. Training is given before commencement. Remember if you are a resident of the area you are welcome to the Centre and have free admission, only paying for feeding if you wish to participate. We open at 7am and have viewing of the dolphins until around 7.45am. This gives visitors a chance to hear all about the history and attributes of our Australian Humpback dolphins. INTER HAS brought a mixed bag of weather so far at the beach with some absolutely stunning offshore days and some colder rainy days as well. Rainbow and Double Island saw big numbers on the beach during the holiday period, with holiday makers keen to make the most of our beautiful beach when the sun came out. Coming into August, fingers crossed we should see some nice offshore days ahead. With swimming conditions changing every day it’s important to always be swimming between the flags and having a chat with the Lifeguard on duty so you know what to expect. If you are ever uncertain about the conditions please don’t hesitate to come and have a chat.

Students compete in athletics and Eisteddfod

Congratulations to the athletics champs!

T THE END of last term, we held our annual Athletics Carnival that showcased the sporting talents of our students. There were so many examples of athletic ability, but this was overshadowed by the remarkable displays of sportsmanship and good-natured, friendly competition. Our Inter-house Carnival saw Fraser win the bragging rights for Athletics in 2021. Many of our students recorded times or distances that made them eligible to compete in the Small Schools Athletics Carnival. This consisted of students from nine schools across the Gympie district. We had 21 Rainbow Beach State School students in total travel to Albert Park at the beginning of this term, to compete in track and field events. I was very proud of their efforts and the way they represented our School and community. Many of our students placed in the finals and will now be nominated for the Gympie District Carnival in coming weeks. This year the Rainbow Beach State School Choir is once again being expertly guided by Mrs Cherie Mason. On August 5 the choir will travel to Gympie to compete in the Choral Eisteddfod. We wish Mrs Mason and all of our students all the very best. A big thank you to Mrs Mason who continues to foster a love of music in another generation of Rainbow Beach students. We are so lucky to have such great support of our school and our students within our community.

Shows and excursions By Tin Can Bay P-10 School

GYMPIE ART GALLERY and LIBRARY EXCURSION On Thursday June 24, the 1/2 and 2/3 classes visited the Gympie Art Gallery to view their latest exhibition by local First Nations artists, Songlines – Lines of Connecting, Dreaming and Remembering. At school, students have been learning how a sense of place can be depicted in artworks. The Songlines artworks showed students how these artists depicted landscape features and direction of travel that were used to remember how local areas were mapped and pathways to destinations. It was the first time many of the students had visited an art gallery and they were inspired by the experience. The students studied the pieces of work on display and described how line and colour had been used to represent our local ‘place’. Students also visited the Gympie Regional Library, where students extended their knowledge, learning more about the amazing world of digital technology. Felicia and Gareth hosted a hands-on workshop where students guided Bee-Bot robots around a variety of mazes using their coding and mapping skills. A huge thank you goes out to the Gympie Art Gallery and Gympie Regional Library for putting on an amazing day. The students were heard saying that it was the best day ever!

QUIZ WORX As part of the Christian Religious Instruction program, Quiz Worx attended Tin Can Bay P-10 State School on June 18. The entertaining half hour show captured students attention and helped them to explore faith and values using puppets, a performer and music. The primary students thoroughly enjoyed the action-packed performance.

TIN CAN BAY THUNDER Tin Can Bay State School’s first ever human powered vehicle team is “thundering” along in their journey towards the 24-hour race at this year’s Fraser Coast Technology Challenge in Maryborough in September. They’ve been training hard each week and can be spotted along the walking and bike path beside Tin Can Bay Road Wednesday afternoons after school, keenly honing their skills in the racing trike. The team of eight students will compete in the junior mixed division for Year 7, 8 and 9 students, and are looking forward to getting amongst the action in this exciting adventure. HE TIN CAN BAY Fishing Club recently expanded its education and training profile, by hosting a training day workshop for members. Topics covered included state-wide and local rules and responsibilities, bag limits, fish-stock sustainability, Green Zones and care for our environment. The workshop was well supported with 32 persons in attendance, and the information and support provided by our senior club instructors. New members were shown knot-tying, how to properly rig a rod for different fishing locations and species,

bait-net casting and advice on bait types, including soft plastics, squid jigs, yabbies, beach worms and squid. There was an extensive briefing on fishing and water safety, and the importance of providing others with accurate details on planned fishing locations and estimated time of return. Members were also shown the most up-to-date charts in our region, with emphasis on various species-specific fishing locations. Green Zones were covered in detail, as fishing in a Green Zone (accidental or not), carries a hefty fine. You can travel through

Weather has limited activities recently, but members have reported that good size bream (throwing strips of poddy mullet near the Pylons), whiting and squid have still been landed. Some solid Flathead can be found, but they are not as plentiful as this time last year. Using smaller, lighter baits and lures seems to offer the best results at the

moment. Golden Trevally are showing up in Snapper Creek, but it is important to ‘ride the tide’ for the best chance of some quality fish. The Club will schedule regular workshop training days and social events to provide ongoing support to members, as well as a variety of activities including deep sea fishing charters. It’s Tailor Time by Gardiner Fisheries

ATE JULY AND August is the time of year we start to see good numbers of quality Tailor move into our waters. A quality sport’s fish and great eating when bled and iced down quickly, Tailor are a great fish to target during the winter months. General beach fishing outfits, such as the indestructible 6.5” Alvey, teamed up with medium taper 6-8 wrap rods, provide plenty of punch to place baits strategically on banks or in drains that Tailor will frequent. If using spinning reels, a good choice for durability is the Okuma ‘Surf’ in the 8000 size. When it comes to lines, monofilament is generally the best choice as it allows some give/ stretch during the fight and reduces the chances of a ‘shake off’ by a head shaking, jumping Tailor. Line class is best determined by the weights being cast. If distance casting using 8 and 10 ball sinkers, a 20-25 lb line is recommended.

For lighter weights, a 15 lb line is plenty. Products like Suffix Advance, Platypus Super 100 and Shogun Lines are clear choices for strength and fine diameter. Perfect for strong sweeps, swell and tide movement when fishing the surf. We also make our own custom tailor rigs. Constructed with silky smooth, flexible carboncoated wire and quality BKK & VMC hooks, these rigs are designed for targeting big Tailor and achieving maximum casting distance. They are a simple sliding single hook rig with a treble stinger. Designed for softer smaller strip baits, they allow for long accurate casts and solid hook ups. We use a single 5/0 or 6/0 live bait hook along with a solid VMC treble (size 4) attached to the wire. Wire is 60lb multi strand carbon-coated approximately 250mm long. The idea of this rig is to go once through the bait with the single hook, then press and hide the treble into the soft flesh bait.

Just back from our winter travels for CAMPS AUSTRALIA WIDE, our plan was to spend most of our time in NSW. Covid has shelved that for a while, instead we drove further west and took on Queensland’s Natural Sciences Loop!

LIKE MY HOT BATHS - what a delight to stop into Charlotte Plains Station (906) 46km east of Cunnamulla, and have a soak in their soothing artesian waters. We’ll be back to this one and tag along on the station tour, highly recommended! It was in Cunnamulla the next day, we learnt more about the importance of the Eromanga Basin in the Artesian Time Tunnel at the Visitor Information Centre. Not only a perfect spot for picnics, but also to say hello to the Cunnamulla Fella.

Next stop: Eulo. Home of megafauna, gourmet honey, leather and the Eulo Queen Hotel. We camped on the Paroo River. The history at the Police Cells was intriguing one officer turned up for work in nothing but his boots and hat! I’ll go back to visit the Eulo Store again, the air raid shelter and mud bath! Lake Bindegolly looked like a wonderful camp, but we’d booked into Thargomindah Explorers and a pub lunch! Did you know this small outback town had the first hydro

electricity in Australia? And the third in the world? Thargomindah know how to ‘do’ tourism - with self-led tours via a swipe card (even a ghost at the hospital), a scenic walk along the Bullo River and a friendly Visitor Centre with a tick sheet with local things to do and people to meet - like Dogga Dare and Surly Shirley. By this stage, the SA border was closed, so we saved The Dig Tree for another trip. It didn’t stop us enjoying some of the BEST burgers we’ve ever had, at the remote outpost, Noccundra Hotel. The publican told me he bakes them himself each morning and I peeked inside the dining room to finally find a doorway even I could bump my head on! The Channel Country is worth experiencing - I didn’t expect it to be so hilly and beautiful. We would have happily camped on the peaceful Wilson River.

Paroo River, Eulo

We ploughed on through more creek crossings into Eromanga. Another day, another pub - well two pubs, and the brilliant freedom camp at Eromanga Hall. I’ve dragged the family to plenty of museums over the years. But if you come all the way to Eromanga - you have to meet Cooper (or at least Cooper’s thighbone) Australia’s largest dinosaur. Hands down, the best museum experience we’ve had. Our last stop on the Natural Sciences Loop was Quilpie and a climb up Baldy Top with outback red dirt views! Still on my bucket list are Cooladdi, Charleville and Yowah with more stations, National Parks and opals. Next time! Remember the school holiday sailing program is coming up!

INTER IS NOT over yet, but the winter sprint series has finished and the spring series of racing has started. The sprint series consists of several short races, about 4-6 depending on wind and is designed for sailors to practice their starts ready for the next series. In addition to the winter series the YC has been running WAGS. What is WAGS you may ask? Well WAGS, is an acronym with varied meanings and the G thingy, as always, seems to be the point of contention. So, Wednesday Afternoon Good Sailing, Go Sailing, Genteel Sailing or even Gentleman’s Sailing whatever you like, is a fun Wednesday afternoon sail. The event is held by most yacht clubs in Australia and Tin Can Bay Yacht Club is no exception. WAGS at TCBYC has a great format with a pursuit start in the creek out to the yellow at T bar and back to finish outside the clubhouse. The race can be taken as seriously or as casual as anyone wishes. In a recent race one boat was noticed doing several circumnavigations of the yellow mark whilst waiting for other yachts to catch up. Although the fleets are small

at the moment they will certainly grow as the weather warms up. WAGS is open to any sailing vessel with start time based on design and skills. It is planned to get a weekly start time sheet emailed out with all member’s boat start time listed, so everyone knows when to hit the water. Cheers Everybody and Second Safari are the nominated rescue boats and will stay in the water until all boats are safely back in the creek, or head back out to assist any boats back to the club with a tow due to the wind dropping out, for example. WAGS is also a great way to introduce non-sailors or visitors to our fantastic sport, with most boats welcoming visitors aboard (when they have room of course). After the afternoon on the water, crew head back to the club to quench their thirst, test the products of the new pizza oven or stay for a meal, and the first crew over the line is presented with a fine bottle of wine, currently sponsored by John M. The YC is looking forward to seeing the fleet of WAGS grow.

HE GOLFING Championships are well underway with fortunately no weather delays so far . The Men’s 72-hole Stroke Championships are due to be played on August 14, 15, 21 and 22. Ladies 27-hole Foursomes Championships will be held on August 25. We have welcomed some visitors from the southern states who arrived in Queensland before the borders were closed. Rainbow Beach Trail Festival sold out The Tiny Towns Tennis Tournament Teams from Rainbow Beach, Kandanga and Gheerulla converged on Tin Can Bay with Team Tin Can Bay managing to win all three - the Mens, Ladies and Mixed Doubles events!

OME ALONG TO the annual Trail Festival on Saturday, August 7 and watch the 500 entrants at this sold out event!

The event starts at Phil Rogers Park with the marathon beginning at 6.30am, 21k at 7.30am and 11km at 8.30am. Cheers the runners as they reach the finish line at 19 Rainbow Beach Road, the park next to the new Fire/SES Station. This year Run Qld and the runners have raised $3000 for the SES. Local SES volunteers manage the course checkpoints and have done for the past 10 years! Run Queensland is hugely appreciative of their support, as well as grateful to Rainbow Beach, a perfect destination to host this unique event.

Cooloola Dragons win second in the Diamond Dash Gwyn Moore

HE DRAGON BOAT Regatta hosted by the Cooloola Dragon Boat Club was a resounding success. An overcast, bleak but dry weekend saw approximately 300 visiting Dragon Boaters from the Gold Coast in the south to Mackay in the north enjoy the hospitality of Cooloola Dragons and Tin Can Bay. So many expressed their love of coming to regattas at TCB. Our regattas are the combined effort of the Cooloola Dragon Boat Club, the Yacht Club, Sailability, Coast Guard and also the Fishing Club. Saturday saw the Bundaberg Dragons take out the third of the 4 series Wide Bay Comp. Overall score to date being Bundy x2, 1770 x1 with one more at Bundaberg. Saturday afternoon saw the running of the Diamond Dash, where teams compete for the trophy as well as for a $200 cash

prize. This race tests the skill of the team, especially the ‘steerer’, to steer around buoys set in a diamond formation. This race is timed. Mackay Stingers took first place by seconds, with Cooloola Dragons second! Dragon Boat Qld Sunday races saw the Mackay Stingers win A with KIN (Kids in Need), Gold Coast win B. A very big thank you to our local councillor, Jess Milne, for her involvement in our regatta, especially in assisting with boat handling on both days, when water temperatures made boat handling very challenging. We may have a new Dragon here! Our training days continue Thursday afternoon and Sunday mornings on Snapper Creek. A Little Humour FISHING TRIP A guy had planned a fishing trip to his favourite fishing spot. He packed and began the trip to the water. He launched his boat, motored to his sea trout honey hole, and began fishing. In no time, he caught the biggest trout he’d ever caught. He cast out again and was delighted to catch an even larger trout. Every cast, he caught a trophy fish. Then his mobile phone rang; it was the hospital telling him his wife had been admitted to the emergency room. She may die, they told him. The fisherman was worried, but he wanted to catch the world record trout, so he decided to have just a few more casts. He pulled in three more really huge trout, but his conscience got the better of him, so he reluctantly pulled anchor and motored back to his car to go to the hospital. Running into the emergency room, he met up with a stern-looking doctor. The doctor saw the man dressed for fishing and scolded the husband: “Your wife has been at death’s door for hours now. You kept fishing after you were called, didn’t you? You ought to be ashamed!” The fisherman sobbed it was true. “Well,” said the doc, “I hope you had a good time; your wife will survive, but your fishing days are over… She will require constant care from now on… 24 hours per day. You will have to do everything for her.” The fisherman sobbed, “Oh God, I didn’t think it was that bad, I feel terrible!” The doc grinned and nudged the fisherman with his elbow… ”Just kidding, buddy… she’s dead. How many did you catch?”

Me: Hm... I think I’d be a lot more comfortable going to an adult doctor. NEW BOOTS Bert, at 80 years old, always wanted a pair of authentic cowboy boots, so seeing some on sale, he bought them and wore them home. Walking proudly, he sauntered into the kitchen and said to his wife, “Notice anything different about me?” Margaret at age 75, looked him over and replied, “Nope.” Bert stormed off into the bathroom, undressed and walked back into the kitchen completely naked except for the new boots.

Again he asked Margaret, a little louder this time, “Notice anything different NOW???” Margaret looked up and said in her best deadpan response, “Bert, what’s different? It’s hanging down today, it was hanging down yesterday, and it’ll be hanging down again tomorrow.” Furious, Bert yells out, “AND DO YOU KNOW WHY IT’S HANGING DOWN, MARGARET?” “Nope. Not a clue,” she replied. “IT’S HANGING DOWN, BECAUSE IT’S LOOKING AT MY NEW BOOTS!!!” Without missing a beat ,old Margaret replies, “Shoulda bought a hat, Bert. Shoulda bought a hat!”

WILL YOU LIVE TO SEE 90? Here’s something to think about: I recently picked a new GP. After two visits and exhaustive lab tests, he said I was doing ‘fairly well’ for my age (I’ve just reached 80). A little concerned about that comment, I couldn’t resist asking him, ‘Do you think I’ll live to be 90?’ He asked, ‘Do you smoke tobacco, or drink beer, wine or hard liquor?’ ‘Oh not much grog these days and don’t smoke’ I replied. ‘I’m not doing drugs, either!’ Then he asked, ‘Do you eat rib-eye steaks, fatty roasts and barbecued ribs?’ ‘I said, ‘Not much; my former doctor said that red meat is unhealthy!’ ‘Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, boating, fishing, sailing, surfing, hiking, or bicycling?’ ‘No, I don’t,’ I said. He asked, ‘Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or have a lots of sex?’ ‘No,’ I said. He looked at me and said,.. ‘Then, why the *****@#$%!% do you want to live to 90?’ SHORTS I had the nastiest, rudest, slowest cashier today. I guess it’s my own fault for using the self-service checkout lane. What do you call a mom who turns into a dad? Transparent.

I'm not going to games, with all the announcements being thrown around get too cocky with not being locked up, but I would rather it's hard to see how they're only going to spend 690 million, be here than other places at the moment (all could change suppose it doesn't ma er, these pollies won't be around to though). pay for it. With all the disrup on that the “Pandemic” has quaran ne, one rule for one another for another, nearly caused, not only here, but across the world, people's reads like Animal Farm? liber es and freedoms have taken a ba ering. I know that I will not appease everyone, but the Go Broncos, go Queensland and go Australia! economic/social and health issues that we are leaving, not only for our children but grandchildren, there has to be a be er way? I'm not an an -vax (I've had all my jabs (and a few more) through life), but with all the alternate informa on I was quite wary, now the wri ng on the wall “NO JAB, NO PLAY”. Looks like I'll eventually get the JAB. Enough of Covid conspiracy theories (that's right it came from a wet market not a bio lab?), it's good to see that our leader of the free world (Sleepy Joe) won't take a cogni ve test- love or hate him the “Don” wasn't shy of a press conference or two and was able to answer basic ques ons, China and Russia must be laughing all the way to the bank, I mean world. Can't wait to travel again! Sports report Kevies the saviour (well Benny may be IKEN NOT BENNETT?), well not this year, he did inherit a roster that he had nothing to do with and as the classic saying goes “we're in a rebuilding phase”. I just want to win a premiership like everyone else, not excuses, as per the QUEENSLAND State of Origin team - listening to Freddy and co going off about crea ng a dynasty, three zip, goes to show the spirit that we have. On the other hand, the Lions are looking to secure a top eight finish. As I look at the ladders there must be some teams that just produce good culture: the Melbourne Storm, from the NRL, Geelong from the AFL and the Crusaders from the now defunct Super Rugby. I'm sure a lot of teams try to emulate them, although players/coaches are all different and obviously produce different performances in different condi ons. I can't say that I like either Max Verstaffen or Lewis Hamilton all that much, though it's good for F1 to at least have a compe on. Go Daniel, but I don't think he really is in the mix (maybe should have stayed in the Red Bull If your fish got away, Mitchell has some steaks for you at the IGA! although 50 million is a lot to knock back).
