EDITOR’S NOTE

Action-packed August W

Of course, the big news this month is the famous Fishing Classic & Expo kicking off on 21 August. Created by Rainbow royalty the Modin family three and a half decades ago, this is a huge event for the town and is even more hotly anticipated this year after having to be cancelled at the last minute in 2021.

And of course 18 August is Vietnam Veterans Day (previously Long Tan Day), a memorial day particularly close to my heart for personal reasons, and hugely important to so many residents of our region. Service details are on page 4 of this issue. See you there.

With open borders and Aussies keen to travel the town will be flooded with visitors from far and wide - who of course then go back home and tell everyone about how perfect, beautiful, and amazing Rainbow Beach is!

And then next month will be all about Rainbow Beach Spring Fest! Check out the performer profiles in this issue, the organisers have secured some incredible acts in another huge boost for the town. Another event you won’t want to miss!

Have you noticed how many more visitors from the Gold Coast we have been having in the past year or so? Tourists that previously went south for their hols but were blocked by the NSW border closure have now discovered what hidden treasure awaits them only a few hours north instead. Word is getting out about our gem of a town.

Stay warm, safe, and happy. Who would want to be anywhere else? Til next month

Although, the army has always known about this secret paradise, with Camp Kerr (Wide Bay Training Area) being used for training for longer than most of us have been alive - and they still visit all these years later. Over the next couple of months the Cooloola Coast will be full of Defence personnel on various training exercises.

Exercise Surfing Penguin will be one to watch out for, with the LARC V aquatic vehicles using our beaches here in Rainbow for their surf training. The kids will love checking that out.

Training Exercise on the Cooloola Coast O

The Veterans Day service at the Rainbow Beach cenotaph on 18 August 2022

All welcome to attend Veterans Day Service

VER THE period 29 August and 19 September, the Royal Military College - Duntroon will be conducting a training exercise in all three Cooloola Coast townships as well as the surrounding areas. The activity seeks to simulate a peace and stability operation in Australia’s near region to test Army’s next generation of leaders in a realistic and challenging situation. This exercise is the final training activity for Army’s future officers prior to graduation and is designed to develop their understanding of contemporary operations in a complex environment. During the exercise period, the public may see the establishment of temporary operating bases within the community and the conduct of military operations such as patrolling and vehicle checkpoints.

The exercise also includes role players who will wear a mixture of civilian clothing and military apparel and may be carrying firearms. Blank ammunition and pyrotechnics will be used for some aspects of the training. Locals should not be alarmed if they see military personnel or hear loud noises during the exercise period. The opportunity to conduct this activity on the Cooloola Coast is a privilege and the local community’s patience and cooperation is greatly appreciated while this essential training is being conducted. A hotline will be established upon arrival in the area to enable community members to engage directly with activity coordinators should any issues arise. Keep an eye out for further information posted in townships.

Surfing Penguin Coming to Town! I

T’S NOT OFTEN you are told you can spot a Penguin at Rainbow Beach, let alone a surfing one! Unfortunately, it’s not a talented flightless aquatic bird that you will see but part of the 10 Force Support Battalion; the 35 Water Transport Squadron, conducting their annual Exercise Surfing Penguin. Utilizing the LARC V (Lighter Amphibious Resupply Cargo – 5 Tonne), soldiers will be conducting surf negotiation training and certification in preparation for the High Risk Weather Season (Oct–Mar). This mandatory training is carried out in preparation for any humanitarian aid or disaster

relief that the Australian Defence Force is called upon to support. The LARC V can operate in surf conditions of up to 2m carrying supplies or personnel across the surf zone and beach head. LARC V’s will operating in and out of the water in various locations progressing to larger surf conditions around Pacific Boulevard. Further training will be conducted utilising the F470 Zodiac (inflatable boat) in order to familiarise soldiers operating in surf conditions. Keep an eye out around Rainbow Beach as well as Inskip Point and Pacific Boulevard between 24 and 30 August as there will be ‘Military Activity in

Keep an eye out for a Surfing Penguin (LARC V military vehicle) in late August

Progress’ signage clearly visible when training is being conducted. Defence asks that all residents and visitors to please stay clear of the designated areas that are marked with signage and where there is active training occurring. However, the public is welcome to interact with soldiers on the beach when LARC’s are not moving in and out of the water. So if you’re in the area at the end of August and are looking to see something different, why not go searching for a Surfing Penguin!

Spring Fest will get you dancing and feeling good 2nd & 3rd STUTEMBER 2022 dedicated to STUART FERGIE Elisa Seul

RBSF PROJECT MANAGER

G

ET EXCITED for the Rainbow Beach Spring Fest, two days of great music, great atmosphere and memories, right at your doorstep, with a lineup of artists that will uplift, enrich, and entertain the community. A wave of great sounds is set to refresh our small community. Music lovers from all around South East Queensland are coming to spend the first weekend of September at the beach to enjoy a variety of loved music genres with performances from Mama Kin Spender, Karl S. Williams, The Lyrical, Champion Sound System, Andy V, Aspy Jones, Briannah Grace, Adam Buchanan, Tilly Wright, and Aido. Friendship is this year’s theme, not only because we are tributing a friend, Stuart Boga Fergie (Oka Band) but also because these artists know each other, play together, and their long term friendship will reflect on stage. Some of the best collaborations are synonyms of great relationships. What can we value more than friendship?

In an exclusive for you here are profiles on each artist that will make this year’s Festival more than memorable: The Rolling Stone Magazine has raved about them, Mama Kin and Dingo Spender (performing as Mama Kin Spender) are long term friends who decided to share with everyone what they do best. Their music will put you in a good mood, these artists are such grounded, beautiful, and kind people, creating magic with their stories and music. We are so excited to have them here in Rainbow Beach, bringing their journey spreading values, poetry, stories of connection and what it means to be a great human.

The world definitely needs more magical music, now more than ever, to heal itself. At the Byron Bay Blues Fest when attendees were asked who they were most looking forward to seeing, the majority said: Mama Kin Spender. Karl S. Williams came to Rainbow Beach for the first time whilst touring with the Festival of Small Halls, in November 2020. The Community Hall witnessed a standing ovation followed by a loud request of more songs. Karl is one of the deepest oldest souls that you will see performing on stage. So if you haven’t yet, do yourself a favour and come to check him out. The Lyrical: a return from last year. If you want to feel a little ‘woke’ through music, don’t miss their set. These guys’ joyful and playful performance will be rich with acoustic roots and hip hop topped up with Karl’s special beatboxing. They will be in different acts bridging live collaborations with Karl S. Williams and Briannah Grace. In the ‘younger but rising’ singer/songwriters section we will welcome back Gympie’s favourite band Aspy Jones, and also Briannah Grace and Tilly Wright. These artists are pure inspiration, showing that hearing impairment or autism aren’t reasons big enough to stop them from being great creatives. These are exciting voices of the future. Champion Sound System: A true veteran in the business, Selector Dubwise (Dubwise Productions record label), has been playing reggae and other drum and bass influenced genres since the 80s. So, expect to hear the best old and new school roots and rockers vibes. Along with Selectors Johnny Champion and DJ Marco their 100% vinyl selection gets everybody moving and grooving. Always playing the best in positive and conscious music, family friendly, they provide a safe space where all tribes can come together in unity and enjoy the

unique experience and uplifting vibe created by the sound system. Special guest on Friday will be Andy V with his signature saxophone creating live loops with his keyboards, The Master of Dubbing will create music like a true one-man band, using only his sounds. The guy that plays with a smile, truly in love with music and deeply passionate in sharing it. Adam Buchanan is a music composer that believes in the enduring need for music in our lives. He will do the honour of opening the Festival with a Sound Bath - a deeply-immersive, fullbody meditative listening experience where those in attendance are ‘bathed’ in sound waves that intentionally invite gentle yet powerful therapeutic and restorative processes to nurture your mind and body Last but certainly not least, our very own local musician: Aido Van de Vorst. Aido’s journey into music goes back decades. He has been part of bands, played solo – he is the kind of musician that is always ready for a jamming session. With his heavy-handed guitar style and powerful vocals Aido’s raw acoustic folk rock has an ‘old school busker’ feel and is sure to get your toes tapping. After nine years in southwest Western Australia playing at wineries and breweries in a duo with his wife Tina and playing bass in the Tee Top Refuge’s, Aido has moved back home to southeast Queensland and set up in Rainbow Beach where he has been entertaining the community with a variety of local artists at various venues around town. As you can see, you do not want to miss Rainbow Beach Spring Fest! 2022 is still a recovery year for live events so your support is vital to getting Australian music, art, and culture back on track.

F YOU DIDN’T get over to the Tin Can Bay Country Club between 22-24 July you missed a visual treat! The Cooloola Coast Art Show and Sale hosted 93 entries that had numerous visitors savouring the visual delight, while pondering on what number would go on their People Choice ballot, or which artwork to purchase to adorn their home or office wall. The Junior Section was complemented by many artworks from students of the Tin Can Bay P10 State School featuring faces, space scenes, and wombats. Cr Jess Milne welcomed the crowd on opening night with MC Lizz announcing the winner of Section 1:

She congratulated Kate Websdale and her painting entitled ‘The View.’ Judge Anne Yang selected the winner, and commented that it was a “local landscape with interesting pictures within pictures” and showed “beautiful handling of paint, brushwork, texture and line.” The People’s Choice awards went to Robin Domrow for her ‘Sunset in Tin Can Bay,’ and for the Junior Section the prizes went to Morgan Oliveri (age 7) with ‘The Spring Bouquet’ and Liliaana Kitto (age 10) with her painting ‘Road Trip.’ The Cooloola Coast Art Group would like to thank the sponsors who provided food for the opening night platters: Tin Can Bay Family Butcher, Tin Can Bay Fruit and Veg Market, and Woolworths Cooloola Cove, and the Tin Can Bay Country Club for the venue. Planning well underway for Vietnam Veterans’ Day

Local Probus Clubs Mix Well Together Katrina van den Brenk

O

UR MEMBERS invited members of the Gympie Probus Club to join us for a trip on the Tin Can Bay Ferry to have lunch at Quay Carlo in July. Twenty of us gathered at the Tin Can Bay Yacht Club to await the ferry before heading off in ideal weather for a very enjoyable day. Guest Speaker at our July meeting was Simon Kinchington of the Gympie Regional Council Planning Office who spoke of the new planning scheme for our region which is in its early planning stages at present. After his presentation, members

P

in the past year with the unveiling of commemorative plaques. President Don Holland said, ‘The unveiling of commemorative plaques is the least we can do to recognize the service and contributions to our nation of these heroic Veterans.’ Vietnam Veterans’ Day will commence with a service at 11am at Anzac Memorial Park, Tin Can Bay. Everyone is then welcome to adjourn to the Tin Can Bay RSL sub-branch for a sausage sizzle and refreshments after the service.

LANNING IS WELL underway for the Vietnam Veterans’ Day commemorations in Tin Can Bay to be held on 18 August. We commemorate Vietnam Veterans’ Day on the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966. We remember the sacrifices of those who died and say thank you to almost 60,000 Australians who served during the ten years of our involvement in the Vietnam War. This year’s Vietnam Veterans’ Day will be particularly poignant as we mark the loss of five of our Veterans

had the opportunity to comment and ask questions. Simon encouraged members to contact Council with their ideas as the plan needs to reflect the community’s needs and wants, and so Council can understand what is important to our residents. Our monthly morning tea was held at BayPress in the Dolphin Centre and members travelled to the Gympie RSL for a relaxing morning and lunch, and some dancing, at Morning Melodies, with Billy Guy being the entertainer on the day. Some members have chosen, and are practicing, a couple of acts to present at the Combined Probus Friendship Day to be held at the Brolga Theatre in September. Meetings are held on each second Monday of the month at 2.00pm at the Sandcastle Motel in Tin Can Bay. We welcome new members. Contact Cherryl on 0409 044 100 or Katrina at cooloolaprobus@gmail.com

I

WOULD LIKE to thank everybody who has responded to the news of Len’s passing. I have received many cards, flowers, and good wishes from all I have met locally. For his celebration at the yacht club people came from Brisbane, Pomona, Gympie, and other surrounding areas. I cannot thank you individually but I hope this will be accepted by you all. On the day over eighty people were present, music was offered by four different individuals, mandolin, flute, song and guitar. Several people spoke of their experiences with Len and of his willingness, readiness to get involved, always a smiling face,

and his quirky sense of humour. After living on a 40 foot boat for twelve years, it is not surprising that we lived happily together and were seldom seen apart. I have lost my lifetime friend and partner and I ask that everyone who knows me will understand if my mind wanders from time to time and I don’t seem to appreciate what others are giving. I can assure you that after watching all the videos of the celebration day, I have noticed my preoccupation at times with just getting through the event. I am sorry if you felt I wasn’t quite ‘with it’! Please accept my heartfelt thanks for all your support.

NE STEP AT a Time Tin Can Bay’ walking group recently gathered to bid farewell to Daytona, who has remembered our orders and served our coffees at the Tin Can Bay Bakery, with her beautiful smile. We miss her, but are very excited that Daytona has focused and worked to follow her dream. We wish her all the very best in her studies and future career as a midwife. Goodbye and Good Luck! Fourteen Heart Foundation walkers booked to enjoy a Christmas In July Luncheon, the fundraiser for the Cooloola Coast Medical Transport Inc. We certainly had a great time last year. Hopefully some great photos to follow in next month’s issue. Congratulations to Ralph on achieving your first HFA award for 25 walks with the group. The Tin Can Bay walkers meet Wednesdays and Saturdays outside the Tin Can Bay Bakery: Early group leaves at 7am, the later group at 7.30am. Cooloola Cove Wheelie Walkers meet at 9am on Mondays and Fridays at the Nautilus Drive Bus Shelter outside the shopping centre. Walk Yourself Happy! It’s free, fun and a great way to improve our physical, mental, social and emotional health.

Wishing the lovely Daytona a fond farewell as she embarks on her midwifery studies. Photo by Tina Scullion

We’re all smiles at TCBCAMS Carole Lehmann

W

ELL, WE’VE BEEN having some fun lately at the Tin Can Bay Community & Men’s Shed with a surprise birthday party for our lovely Marie Briggs who is one of the regular Friday morning card playing group. Husband Basil turned up to add some colour and romance to the morning and everyone enjoyed the wonderful ‘88’ double, double sponge cake organised by friend and fellow game player, Yvonne Santos. Smiles also with our very talented Jessa Huckle who has been giving new life to some tired old kitchen chairs. Jessa has been sanding, priming and painting the chairs and they’re looking fabulous. Well done Jessa!! The finished chairs will be for sale at our next Shed Shop Sale Day on Saturday, 20 August if not sold prior. And the workshop members are all smiles too with the arrival of our brand new, heavy duty bandsaw which has taken pride of place in the workshop. So if your face is missing its smile – you might find it at the Tin Can Bay Community & Men’s Shed, Amity Place (behind City Farm) in Tin Can Bay. We’re open 9am – 12 noon weekdays with Tuesdays and Thursdays being dedicated to ‘Men Only’ days. Call us on 0491 175 038 for more information.

O

UR WORK THIS month has really been a carbon copy of the last. We have continued to help those impacted by the recent floods. Again for the last month we have sent $1000 into the Foodworks at Goomeri to help Blaze-Aid feed their volunteer workers that are repairing and replacing

fencing on farms in the Wide Bay area. Another $1000 has gone into Gympie to feed those left homeless after the flooding. Really we don’t know how lucky we are on the Cooloola Coast to have a roof over our head after you see the plight of our neighbours in and around Gympie queueing up for a meal. A lot of us have seen tough times during

the 70s and again in the 90s but just tighten the belt for the ride ahead as it may not be pretty! Thank yous this month to our donors Greg Jones, Big 4 at Rainbow Beach, and Wayne Kerle as we continue the bottle and can collections. Thank you to all that donated to our house bins (10 Tingira Close) and the continued help at Bay Auto Tin Can Bay. Thanks

to all that donated to our tins at Tin Can Bay Bakery for another $120, Goomboorian store, and Mitchells Fruit & Veg. We are not taking food donations at present, but many thanks to those that offered. For now we are just doing cash donations. Our details are BSB 124047 A/C 22599186 Bank of Queensland (RB DroughtRunners).

Ever wonder how kids see our community?

T The popular Coffee with a Cop initiative was recently held in Rainbow Beach

Coffee with a Cop Held in Rainbow Beach Senior Constable Darren Hewitt

I

N MID-JULY the Gympie Crime Prevention Team, along with Senior Constable Michael Brantz of Rainbow Beach Police Beat, attended Salt & Pepper on Rainbow for a Coffee with a Cop event. Coffee with a Cop is an opportunity to meet with local police, ask any burning questions you might have, discuss local issues, and receive crime prevention tips. There are no speeches or agendas, this is just your chance to speak with police officers and voice your concerns whilst getting to know us over a coffee. Senior Constable Brantz said the Coffee with a Cop event at Rainbow Beach was a success considering it was a cooler than usual morning. “Residents and visitors to the area were able to speak to police from Rainbow Beach and Gympie Crime Prevention Unit and discuss local issues including rules about driving on the beach and inland tracks,” he said. Special thanks to Angela and the hard-working staff from Salt & Pepper on Rainbow for supporting this initiative and providing her coffee shop and outdoor area for us to speak to the community. A big thank you to the Rainbow Beach community and the visitors who braved the cooler weather. The community was provided with crime prevention fliers that addressed vehicle security, personal security,

and property identification. To help stop, reduce, and prevent offences occurring, police encourage you to adopt good home, vehicle, and key security habits. • Lock up every time even if you are home, keep unattended doors and windows key locked or shut. • Lock your vehicle even in your driveway and keep your keys out of sight. • Engrave your property. This makes your property difficult to sell and makes it easier for police to return property if found. Keep a list of serial numbers and photograph valuables that can’t be engraved. • Report anything suspicious. Keep a lookout for suspicious behaviour and if in doubt, contact Policelink on 131 444. Report all crimes as soon as possible, no matter how small they seem. Police are also asking the community to follow the myPolice Gympie Facebook page and subscribe to myPolice Gympie at www.mypolice.qld.gov.au/ Gympie where you can keep up to date on community news and crime alerts. Police are reminding residents of Rainbow Beach that the Rainbow Beach Police Beat phone number is 5480 1744, for non-urgent contact ring Policelink on 131 444, but in an emergency ring Triple Zero (000).

HE GYMPIE REGION Local Level Alliance is asking children and young people right across the region to help adults understand what our community is like from a kid’s perspective. ‘Focus on Gympie – A Kid’s Eye View’ is a project where children and young people can share artwork, photos, and stories about their everyday life and experience of living in the Gympie region. The organisers are keen for our Cooloola communities to get involved to ensure that the views of our kids on the coast are included. Opportunities for children and young people to participate include: • Complete the Kid’s Eye View Survey and include artwork or photos to help to express your views. • Take part in a photo scavenger hunt. • Attend a Kid’s Eye View art workshop (dates to be advised) to explore and create work based around the project themes: People, Places and Possibilities. Contact llagympie@gcp.org.au or go to Gympie Region Local Level Alliance on Facebook for survey forms and photo scavenger hunt entries. HOW TO PARTICIPATE: Please submit completed surveys, artwork or photos via email to: llagympie@gcp.org.au (preferred) or drop off at Gympie Community Place, 18 Excelsior Road, Gympie. Entries go into the draw for gift voucher prizes. Please submit entries by 15 August 2022, 5:00pm. Please check with a parent/guardian before entering.

‘Focus on Gympie- A Kid’s Eye View’ is supported with funding from the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF). RADF is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Gympie Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.

Cooloola Coastcare August Update Linda Tabe

PRESIDENT, COOLOOLA COASTCARE WWW.COOLOOLACOASTCARE.ORG.AU

July 2022: Marine debris clean-up held at Rainbow Beach This effort continued clean-up from the mess carried up the coast from flooding in February. Cooloola Coastcare members worked with Gympie Landcare volunteers, decked out in green shirts. We had brilliant sunny weather to roam the beach, Inskip Point, and Pelican Bay. All the broken glass, plastic wrappers, drink bottles, and thongs were sorted and counted for Tangaroa Blue’s data collection. This tedious work enables them to demonstrate problem areas and work on solutions to minimise the source when possible. 6-7 August: Wildflowering at Cooloola 2022 A great variety of native plants are bursting into blossom during August and September. The booklet Cooloola Wildflowers and Walks has been very popular as an aid to identifying the colourful flowers, with accompanying maps to show short walks where they may be found. This weekend event will celebrate our local natural beauty with talks, walks, and opportunities to draw and use natural inks with artists Joolie Gibbs and Dr Sue Davis. Information and ticketing are at: https://events.humanitix.com/ wildflowering-at-cooloola-2022

10 September: Regenerating Australia, the film 3.00pm at the Cooloola Cove Community and Veterans Hall. Cooloola Coastcare is hosting the 17-minute film titled ‘Regenerating Australia: Hope for a Sustainable Future.’ This film is based on a four-month interview process with a diverse group of Australians who shared their hopes and dreams for the country’s future. It is a new story for our nation: a story of empowerment. A story of solutions. A story of regeneration. What would Australia look like by 2030 if we simply listened to the needs of its people? This ‘mocked-up’ look back at this critical decade is full of hope and aspiration, mapping out a pathway for change that can lead us to a more sustainable future.

4-6 November: Cooloola Bioblitz 2022 A BioBlitz is an intense period of biological surveying in an attempt to record all the living species within a designated area.

Groups of scientists, naturalists, and volunteers will walk in groups into a variety of ecosystems centred around the base at Rainbow Beach Community Hall.

Yacht Club Sailing School’s surprise whale watching tour

Kay Muir

T

WO RELATIVE newcomers to town have been keen to learn to sail for some time. However, the weather has not been cooperative at a time suitable for sailors and learners. Then the planets all aligned and we were able to venture out on a sunny, but not too warm, winter’s Wednesday afternoon, with a light breeze in the club’s Status boat, ‘Tickled Pink’. With an outgoing tide we decided to head up Crab Creek towards the power lines, in case the wind died out when we could at least drift back on the tide. On return to the entrance of Snapper Creek, the breeze was holding out, so learner helms swapped and we headed towards Carlo. That was when we saw a spout/ splash of water. Dolphins don’t do that so maybe it was a stingray splashing

the water. Then a whale broke the surface of the water quite close to the boat. It was travelling towards Tin Can Bay and we followed. It surfaced a few more times and turned around. Apparently, there were two whales and not just one. Unfortunately, we had to return home and the amazing whale watching tour was over. It can only be assumed that after their sightseeing tour of Tin Can Bay, the whales found their way back out over the Wide Bay bar and continued on their journey as no further sightings have been made. Wednesday afternoon is a cruising afternoon for experienced sailors and those wanting to learn. Everyone is welcome to join. The club also has ‘Green Fleet’ sailing on Saturdays before the Sunday races. For further information check the Tin Can Bay Yacht Club website: http:// tcbyachtclub.wix.com/tcbyacht-club

Another fun and exciting Dragon Boat regatta! Toni Archer Photos by Jess Milne

Have a go at Barefoot Bowls in August Tin Can Bay Bowls Club

A Kay Muir with the crucial job of time keeping

T

HE COOLOOLA Dragon Boat Club annual regatta was held in Tin Can Bay early in July. Despite the unusual rain for this time of year, the event was a great success. Saturday’s racing was between the clubs of the Wide Bay region which included boats from 1770, Hervey Bay, Bundaberg, and Cooloola. Sunday’s racing was contested by teams from eight Queensland centres. These included clubs from Brisbane River, Bribie Island/Redcliffe, Bundaberg, Gold Coast, Hervey Bay, Mackay, Manly, 1770, and Sunshine Coast. In most of the races, the competition was very close. So close was one particular three-boat race that it took the timekeepers and officials quite some time to work out the winner and second and third places; only 0.06 seconds separated the three teams at the finish line. Several teams contested the Cooloola Dragon Boat Club’s own ‘Diamond Dash’. Once again, the competition was very tight. The Diamond Dash is a timed event rather than a straight race for the line. The two boats start in opposite directions and then have to navigate around a series of buoys which results in them returning to the start line, facing each other at the end of the race. To ensure that neither team gains any advantage from the current or prevailing breezes, each race is run over two legs with the two boats

Dragons Abreast Gold Coast Team got right into the fancy dress spirit, complete with fake moustaches

switching their starting direction for each leg. It is often said that this is a ‘steerer’s race’. The person acting as the sweep or steerer can make or break the race for his or her crew. The Bundaberg team took out overall honours for the Diamond Dash. But the Cooloola Dragons were in the hunt all the way and managed to get themselves into second place overall only a mere single second behind Bundy. As well as the serious racing part of the weekend, the teams also had a lot of fun with a team fancy dress for which prizes were awarded. Another big part of the weekend was the Cooloola Dragon Boat Club’s raffles with nine baskets of goodies as the prizes. Most of the contents of the baskets had been donated

by members of the Cooloola club. A large part of the raffle takings will be donated to the Leukemia Foundation. The raffle prizes were fairly equally shared between competing teams and the spectators who so generously added their support. All in all, it was a great weekend and was thoroughly enjoyed by competitors and spectators alike. The Cooloola club would like to thank all the volunteers who assist with running the event and the sponsors who also provided assistance and, in one case, a cash prize. The next event on the Wide Bay Series Dragon Boat calendar is the 1770 regatta on 13 August. The Cooloola team will be travelling to 1770 to compete once again in what will be the last of this year’s Wide Bay series events.

T LAST SOME days without rain, chilly and windy but dry. The club held a Come and Try day in July with the green full of potential champions. A great day was had by all. The club will be conducting another one when the weather warms up a little. The next Barefoot Bowls evening is Saturday 6 August at 4.30pm come along and have a go. The Ladies open 4s is to be held on Tuesday 30 August. Nomination forms are available on the board. The next ladies invitation day is Tuesday 2 August. Ladies pennants is to be played 2 and 15 August. Mens Open 4s is to be held Saturday/Sunday 8 & 9 October. The men’s pennant team have played two games - one win and one loss. It’s great to see both the greens in use, with the healthy influx of holiday visitors joining us on play days. To our life member Beryl - all our love and support , you are constantly in our thoughts. Reminder that Tin Can Bay Country Club memberships fees are due: $40 for bowlers. See you on the greens.

Fishing, Boating & the Outdoors

TCB Fishing Club Update Alan Rippon PRESIDENT

B

Y THE TIME this article goes to print we will have finalized both of our free Junior Fishing Workshops and our free Senior Fishing workshop. There were 40 participants across both groups who received some great training and walked away at the end of the day with a better understanding of fishing basics plus some excellent Shimano gear – all at no cost to themselves. We received some great feedback from those who attended and would like to thank all participants for coming along. These days were made possible due to the funding provided by The Queensland Department of Agriculture & Fisheries and support

from The Chandlery Bait & Tackle – plus the involvement of our Club Members in the planning and organization of the events. For all those who missed out, we will be applying for funding to run these days again next year – so keep an eye out around the middle of next year. On the fishing front it’s been a bit disappointing in the squid catching department, and the whiting seem to have been of the same mindset – but again that’s fishing. On a brighter note, club members have been reporting good catches of cod, slatey bream, tuskfish, flathead and sweetlip. Please feel free to contact us by email tcbfishingclub@bigpond.com or phone us on 0437 242 171. Tight lines everyone – Cheers

Council Corner Volunteer Management If you would like advice on how to re-energize volunteer programs and manage processes, learn about the best practices in managing and leading volunteers, and find out about intergenerational volunteering then register for the free Best Practices in Volunteer Management workshop. In partnership with Volunteering Australia it will be held at the Pavilion Conference and Reception Centre in Gympie on Friday 19 August from 10am to 3pm. For more information email communty@ gympie.qld.gov.au or contact the Community Development team on 1300 307 800.

There will be a range of stallholders including electric car displays, solar installers, battery powered garden care, waste management tips, water reuse technology, off-grid options, and much, much more.

Getting the vision right means the planning scheme will guide future development in line with community aspirations. Council is investing in community engagement to give all sectors of the community the opportunity to have a say.

Organised by the Gympie and District Sustainablity Alliance in partnership with Gympie Regional Council, Gympie and District Landcare Group, and Gympie Living magazine.

Visit Council’s website or use the QR code to complete the quick poll to share what you think the region’s priorities should be and click on the map to give your thoughts and ideas for different areas of our region.

Roads Emergent road repairs are being undertaken region-wide as applications through the Queensland Reconstructive Authority funding programs. There are several factors affecting roads including saturated pavement therefore surface failures such as potholes are appearing even during dry weather. To ensure that any new or damaged repairs can be added to the maintenance program keep reporting any issues to Council.

Made From Rubbish For Rubbish Locals making good use of the handmade rubbish bags supplied by Sun Club at our beach exits Printed with permission

H

AVE YOU SEEN this brilliant idea by innovative local clothing company Sun Club?

Recycled rubbish bags made from shade cloth found in the debris on Teewah Beach after the floods earlier this year. Sun Club has placed these bags at the beach exits for everyone to use.

The idea is that you can take a

bag, collect anything you find along your walk, put that rubbish in the bin when you are done, and return the bag for someone else to do the same.

LOVE this! Make sure you support this wonderful concept, and also make sure you check out sunclub.com.au for their handmade and handprinted apparel and accessories.

Locals Don Pyjamas To Help Kids In Care E

VEN THOUGH we are blessed with pristine beaches, spectacular bushland, and a sensational climate, one of the best things about Rainbow Beach remains its residents. The enormous hearts and kindness of our neighbours never ceases to amaze and inspire. Recently, Rainbow resident Deb Taylor hosted a Pyjama Day morning tea with some other lovely local ladies to raise awareness and funds for the wonderful Pyjama Foundation. The Pyjama Foundation provides children in foster care the opportunity to change the direction of their lives with learning, life skills, and confidence.

Through the Love of Learning program, volunteers called ‘Pyjama Angels’ are recruited, screened, trained, and then matched with a child in care and spend time with them once a week, focusing on learning-based activities such as reading books aloud with their child, playing educational games, and helping with homework. Deb has been a Pyjama Angel for six years, in the Sunshine Coast and Cooloola areas and currently sees three children in care. ‘I love being there for these children and they bring a lot of joy to my life as well,’ she says. ‘A lot of children in care unfortunately fall behind in their education due to the trauma that they have experienced. Just someone else as a positive role model, besides the wonderful foster family, helping them along their journey can make a difference.’ In addition to her ongoing volunteer work, Deb decided to hold a Pyjama Day morning tea to bring some attention to the good works of the Pyjama Foundation. ‘It was a good turnout and we certainly raised some awareness,’ says Deb. ‘We also managed to raise much needed funds. ‘I am so thankful for the support, and to some of the local businesses that provided goods and vouchers to raffle for the event.’ More Pyjama Angels are needed in the surrounding area. If you are passionate about helping kids in care by improving their learning skills, go to thepyjamafoundation. com for more information and to donate or register for the program.

– BIRD OF THE MONTH –

Spotted Pardalote

Melissa Marie Photo by Scott Humphris

W

ITH DELICATE DOTS on its head, and a bright and cheerful yellow throat, the spotted pardalote is a little spark of colour that never fails to delight. These tiny birds, measuring only 8 to 10 centimetres (3.1 to 3.9 inches) in length and weighing around 6 grams, build long horizontal tunnels as their nests, which are usually dug into the soil of creek and river banks.

The spotted pardalote is mostly found in eucalypt forests and woodlands, but can be found in parks and gardens that have a wellestablished eucalypt canopy, as they like to stay high in tall branches. With a soft sweet call and exquisite plumage that is like a painting, they truly are proof that good things come in small packages!

– cooloola city farm PLANT OF THE MONTH –

T

Melaleuca thymifolia

HIS SHRUB, also known as thyme-leaf honey myrtle, grows to 1m.

A popular native shrub chosen for its attractive flowers and general adaptability for a small garden. It thrives with little attention in wet conditions and most soils and is usually free from pests and disease. Flowers may be purple to mauve, pink or white, but purple dominates in the wallum. Flowering usually occurs spring to summer in clusters on semi-hardwood at tips of branches Seed clusters may be pruned to encourage branching, making a more compact bush.

Learning Community We are over halfway through the year and it continues to be a privilege to support homeschooling families in our community through the provision of activities that complement their education. You may be aware that teachers and chaplains who were not vaccinated are now able to return to schools, however my personal decision is to continue to support these families who made the courageous decision to remove their children from mainstream education and take on the role as educators which is not always an easy task. Participants in the Rainbow Beach Learning Community are looking forward to a term full of fun and educational activities. This term due to work commitments, local teacher Kerry Sleath is running the program on Tuesdays and I will continue to run it on Thursdays. A highlight of the program since the start of the year has been art classes provided by local artist Mo Riggs who has enjoyed watching the young people blossom creatively through their artwork. New activities this term will include a morning fitness program, STEAM projects, Minute To Win It games, bike rides, and tennis. We are looking forward to visits from local cakemaker extraordinaire Jennie Tritton who will be helping us make Father’s Day biscuits, Gympie Regional Councillor Jess Milne, and Elisa Seul who will be sharing about her country of origin and helping us cook some amazing Italian food. Throw in some fishing, a visit to Cooloola Berries, and maybe a trip to Double Island lighthouse and Term 3 is shaping up to be a wonderful time for everyone involved! We are hoping to create a greater awareness in our young people of how blessed they are to live in this beautiful part of the world with access to plentiful food, water, and education. One way of doing this is providing them with the opportunity to learn about and support young people in third world countries. The Learning Community is looking to help SET4LIFE Australia, a registered local charity that provides financial support for the Yiben community in Sierra Leone, which is one of the poorest countries in the world. In 2009, Gympie girl Amy Coates decided to volunteer her nursing and midwifery skills to help the people of Sierra Leone and spent time in Yiben (pronounced ‘Ee-ben’), a very remote northern village, connecting with a local leader called Mallam. Amy’s response to the needs of the village, and the ongoing support of Gympie friends and family, has resulted in the establishment of SET4LIFE Australia. Up until recently, Amy was working for the World Health Organisation in Geneva as a public health strategist but is now back in Australia for a well-earned break.

The SET4LIFE Australia Gympie team are currently supporting the Yiben community by selling pre-loved jewellery at local markets. Do you have any jewellery that you no longer wear which is just sitting in a drawer somewhere? We would love it if you could drop it in to the Learning Community group that meets on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at the Rainbow Beach Community Centre. This term we are hoping to have a member of the SET4LIFE Australia Gympie team come along and share about the current projects they are fundraising for. If you would like to find out more about the charity or donate to their work, check out their web page at: www.set4life.org.au

Community Pantry It has been very rewarding to be able to help people in our community with Foodbank hampers over the last few months. Since teaming up with Foodbank in mid-April, we have been able to distribute over 400 hampers to people in Rainbow Beach, Cooloola Cove, and Tin Can Bay. Woolworths Cooloola also donates food items that are close to their best before date which are given out with the hampers. We are very grateful to McClintock’s Transport who deliver the food from Foodbank in Brisbane to their Gympie depot where Rainbow Beach Transport picks it up and brings it down to Rainbow Beach on Thursday mornings – both companies do this free of charge so that we can keep the hamper cost to a low $10. As food prices, rent and electricity costs rise, many families are struggling to put enough food on the table and it is wonderful to see local people helping out their neighbours by buying them a hamper worth $40$50 every couple of weeks. Another local lady has made a regular financial donation since the Community Pantry started at the Church of the Good Shepherd in midDecember and this is why she loves to help in this way:

to communities that need it most while supporting local farmers and reducing food waste. Check out Foodbank’s website for further information: www.foodbank.org.au/ QLD/farm-to-families.

Drop your unwanted jewellery into the Learning Community to help SET4LIFE Australia support the Yiben community in Sierra Leone

“I grew up at times with very little. My mum did her very best but I know it was challenging for her. I am lucky that my husband and I can provide for our family (and yes, it has been challenging at times) but if our donation gives a mum and dad the dignity and less stress to provide a meal for their family, that makes me smile. Some people need a helping hand and a hug and it is nothing to feel ashamed about. We are a community and we should embrace each other.” Another way that you can help get fresh food to families in need is by supporting Foodbank Queensland’s Farm to Families Program. A monthly gift will ensure healthy and nutritious food gets SHINING A LIGHT ON THE COOLOOLA COAST

We have everything for sale at your local IGA - including the building itself! Got a few spare mil and want to buy a shopping centre? Then make a bid when the en re property goes up for auc on on 5 August. Not to worry though, we have already re-signed our long term lease so no maer what happens we’ll s ll be right here. We’ve been in this shopping centre for 16 years and we certainly aren’t going anywhere any me soon. The upcoming sale sparked a bit of a trip down memory lane and I dug out this old ad from the Community News from way back when it was s ll owned by Tony Huxley. In it I make men on of rising fuel costs - if only we could go back to those prices now! It is nice to look back and be reminded of how long we have been doing what we love to do, which is serving our local community in this beau ful town, providing jobs for locals, and stocking a large range of grocery products.

do for 2032. Let’s hope a global pandemic doesn’t make another appearance for that one. Blighty has been giving the Poms a run for their money with the weather and their version of a heatwave, and to be fair we have had a bit of a “coldwave” here lately, let’s hope it all evens out again soon. Only one more month of winter to go so make sure you pop in to see us and grab those comfort foods to warm your bellies. We just shared a recipe on our Facebook page for a delicious twist on the old classic beef stroganoff using beef rump roast, make sure you check it out and let us know if you make it.

Matt, Bernie, Justin, Liam & our friendly staff at the IGA

Ok, enough with the warm and fuzzies and onto the important SPORTS REPORT: Well, I did say last month that “nothing beats Queensland” and of course I was absolutely correct with a cracker of a game to end the Origin and that sweet, sweet series win for the cane toads. “This is one of the most famous Maroons victories you will ever see,” Origin legend Cam Smith said aerwards. Can’t argue with that. And it’s been great to see the Broncos con nuing their winning form which sees them in the top four. Even greater to hear coach Kevvie Walters’ confidence that it’s not a case of if but when they nab that seventh premiership. Kev is sure he’ll be the first person to be involved with Broncos premierships as both a player and coach, telling NRL360 host Paul Kent: “It’s going to happen, get ready.” No wonder he’s top of the contenders list for Dally M coach of the year. The Lions are also doing well for us in the AFL, sing at a welcome third at me of wri ng. Is it too much to dare hope for a double-code Queensland premiership…? Overseas sports news and Wimbledon finished with Kyrgios making the final but didn’t really stand a chance against Novax Djokovic who showed once again why he is one of the all me greats of the sport. Commonwealth Games has kicked off in sunny Birmingham, best we all watch it to get some ideas for what we need to

IGA has been in Rainbow a long me! Enjoy a squiz at this old ad from about 16 years ago. Of course we haven’t changed a bit...

This is a paid adver sement and the views of the writer are not necessarily the views of the Rainbow Beach Cooloola Coast Community News owners or staff.

A big hello to all our valued customers - both local and visi ng, come and see your friendly staff at your local IGA today
