The unfortunate fact is that women are still not paid equally to that of their male counterparts, women still are not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally women’s education, health and the violence against them is worse than that of men.

Option one has planned a possible golf course residential development in town, whereas option two has it potentially located further north. The plan includes existing infrastructure, such as sewerage, road and powerlines, and is said to provide a planning vision covering possible tourism, conservation and residential development opportunities. Happy Mother’s Day

W

ELL THE much needed rains came. The first week of the holidays were a little quiet, then the sun came out and hooray - so did the tourists! Welcome holiday goers, make sure you tell your friends and families how beautiful the Cooloola Coast is. Did anyone else think it convenient that the State Government sent out the Inskip Peninsula Master Plan media release after we went to print for April? What a whirlwind it created. It does bring up the topic of the Rainbow Beach Commerce and Tourism Association - an organisation that was due to be disbanded with monies owed rectified, last year. It seems it is still up and running, although we doubt members are aware of it, as emails sent from the RBCT have had little to do with minutes but lots on agendas. It is clear that town NEEDS business and tourism representation that reflects opinions of the majority of business owners, with the best interests of Rainbow Beach at its core. Any takers? Or suggestions? Remember feedback closes on the Master Plan shortly and the tracks and trails strategy is also worth your time to comment. You could mention that a wetland walk had been designed years ago for the area west of Clarkson Drive, as it appears this will either be residential

or golf course if either plan come to fruition. This month we discuss plans for Carlo Point boat ramp, Tin Can Bay jetties and a new market. It’s lovely to include a couple of weddings, and there is plenty coming up in May to enjoy. Well done to all the amazing fundraisers out there and the businesses that support them.... Readers, make sure you support our advertisers and help us give you a newsy read each month. I must mention Dr Dave’s comments to me. Only last week he detected three more melanomas, he is still amazed with the community response from his article with us from months ago, and we are glad we can assist with early detection. This month he tells us about ovarian cancer - another important topic. If you have had your photo taken this month by us, and it is not in the following pages - make sure you check out our facebook page! Keep emailing, texting or posting on our facebook page your fantastic pics. Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mums (Nannas, Grandmas, Step-mums...) out there: remember to spoil her, buy local and take Mum for a walk (for breast cancer) in Tin Can Bay.

Carolyn and Dave with kids Tristan, April, Jack and Paige now provide Rainbow Beach’s Roadside Assist program

More new owners for RACQ I

T’S BUSY TIME for Dave Elder and Carolyn Wall, new owners of Rainbow Beach’s Towing Roadside Assist. Not only did they purchase a new business last month, they are preparing for their wedding in five weeks! Carolyn said they had started looking at what was available locally so they could build a business together, “With Dave’s experience in roadside assistance and my management experience, we thought this was the perfect choice. “ It has come full circle for Dave as he started his working career as an apprentice mechanic in an RACQ workshop and was also Roma’s RACQ roadside assistance and towing representative for five years. After growing up on a 4000 acre farm near Roma, he couldn’t resist a job offer at beautiful Rainbow Beach, and worked as a casual mechanic for Rainbow Beach Adventure Company. Dave managed the workshop for the last five of his nine years with the company, responsible for the team of eight staff and maintenance of nearly 70 Tag Along vehicles. Carolyn moved here from Hervey Bay, “I was working from home as an administration manager of a mining company with my three children and niece, when nearly four years ago I bumped into Dave in a park. Six months later we were engaged! “Before meeting Dave I had never been to Rainbow, I fell in love with the town and the lifestyle so the natural progression was to move to our house in Cooloola Cove. But that was not close enough for us - so now we rent our house out and live in town.” RACQ have changed their business model and redesigned the service areas on the Cooloola Coast for Roadside Assist, “There will now be one RACQ area rather than two (Tin Can Bay/Cooloola and

Rainbow Beach), they now require larger companies to be a main hub and contract holder for the whole regional area. “After the 28th April RACQ will be located in Cooloola Cove and will be run by Action Auto Group in Gympie. This was determined prior to our purchase of the business.” Dave and Carolyn will still be providing a break down service for other roadside assist programs like Allianz and Global Assist. “We will be focusing on 4wd offroad assistance as RACQ membership does not cover anything off-road and we are also providing roadside assistance to those who are not members of any roadside assist program.” Their 4wd recovery Nissan patrol will continue to help get people out of the sand and they will continue to offer towing services from Fraser Island and in all local areas with the 4wd tow truck and 2wd tow truck. “We also now offer special local and aged pension rates, regularly reviewing our processes and charges so we can offer a high service level and affordability to the local community.” Rainbow Beach 4x4 Hire will also operate from the same premises on Karoonda Road, where both Dave and Carolyn will be based, working alongside Gary and Katie Sanderson with the RACQ mechanical workshop. Carolyn says, “I will also continue my role as General Manager of GreenBizCheck, the world’s largest cloud based Environmental Certification company.” Despite the wedding (Carolyn assures it is all “on track”) and juggling the busy Easter season and kids on school holidays, they are enjoying their new business adventure, “Now it means we can build a future for us and our four children in Rainbow Beach.” Visit their business Facebook page and website for further updates.

Arco’s is popular as ever

MANTA RAYS: stars of the show Wolf Rock Dive Report by Cheryl Maughan, Wolf Rock Dive Report

Tony and Tanya Heading have brought back a little bit of Italy to Rainbow Beach. In the courtyard behind the pub, you’ll find a well loved eatery with a great atmosphere, called Arcobaleno on the Beach. “All of the locals that come in, say they have been waiting for Arco’s to reopen. They like it because it’s out of the main strip,” Tony explains. This little BYO restaurant/cafe has many reasons it is so popular. It’s laidback alfresco style with the cool original murals

ANTA RAYS have been the stars of the show at Wolf Rock this month overshadowing the main attraction which is usually the grey nurse sharks. Of course the sharks are still there is force with between 20 and thirty of them being seen each dive. Loads of bait fish are swarming around the rock with little whalers and trevally chasing them around for a bit of sport. Visibility has varied between 25 and 10 metres with water temperature around 24 degrees. Picture this month supplied by Cassie Smith.

The planners had a stall in the main street on Saturday 12 April, but this was not a suitable venue. It was on a crowded footpath, half in sun on a hot day and it was hard to ask questions, make comments and hear what the planners had to say. It was stressed to the planners that people are interested in what is planned for their community and they are aware that there is a need for more public consultation in an appropriate venue, such as the community hall. The next meeting of the association will be at 7pm in the SES shed on 10 June. All current and prospective residents and Grey Nurse Sharks ratepayers are most welcome.

Historical Cooloola:

Tour around the Lighthouses with the Portmaster by Marion Young author of “Lights of Cooloola”

October 12, 1907 Captain Hurst in the ship, SS Albatross, left Brisbane on June 1 and anchored at Bribie Island at 4pm. At 10pm as the weather improved, they hoved the anchor and proceeded on their way. With a heavy easterly sea and heavy rain squalls the situation was far from enviable. The little vessel, with her deck load of coal, oil and beacon material, was shipping large quantities of water and some of it, finding its way below, the pumps had to be manned at intervals throughout the night. Sunday, June 2 At 10 am we rounded Double Island Point, when, owing to the heavy surf, we found it impossible to land the oil, and, doubtful of being able to cross the Wide Bay Bar, we ran away to leeward, and reaching the bottom of the bay found a lagoon of smooth water, safe from wind and sea. I afterwards learned that some years previous, the Portmaster had taken shelter in the same place with the SS Laura, and which for the safety of small vessels, assuredly deserves to be more generally known. In the afternoon, while the crew were landing the oil, I accompanied the Portmaster in a walk to the lighthouse, some three miles distant. Raining incessantly, and the track being over a series of loose sandhills, covered with brushwood, the walk proved far from invigorating. Reaching the lighthouse, I was agreeably surprised at the comfortable surroundings, which, with stockyard and outhouses, had all the appearance of a wellto-do pastoral homestead. It stands on a rocky headland rising abruptly from the sea to a height of nearly 300ft. The light is of the third order, dioptric, revolving every 30 seconds, is visible for 24 miles. It is also a telegraph and signal station.

With the superintendent, (Mr Smith) are two other families, who judging from the environments of their homes, would appear to be in the enjoyment of every domestic comfort. There is also a school presided over by a lady teacher, whose salary is complemented by the Marine Department. Returning to the ship, the Portmaster drew my attention to the low banks of sand joining the two hills forming the promontory, and when seen from a distance doubtless suggested to Captain Cook the name Double Island. But judging from the rapid change and displacement of the ridges of sand intervening, it was just possible that at that time his nomenclature may have been correct. Returning on board at 5 p.m. wet and tired, but cheered by the strains of sacred music coming from the forecastle, which, ceasing, was resumed on deck by Muirhead, who with considerable pathos sang the “Bonnie, Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond.” Monday, June 3 Crossed the Bar at 10 a.m., reaching Inskip Point at noon. Here we found Captain Boult, Harbour-master, in the steamer Seagull, waiting to interview the Portmaster. Coming on board, he dined with us, when I was surprised to learn the wonderful expansion of the oyster industry in Sandy Straits, and the extensive littoral under his supervision and jurisdiction. Leaving Inskip Point we wound our way through the intricate navigation of Great Sandy Straits, rendered easy, however, by its excellent system of lights and other marks, numbering in all some sixty lights. Copies of the book “Lights of Cooloola” can be purchased at Rainbow Beach and Cooloola Cove Newsagents.

Lest We Forget: Anzac Day 2014 Launching their careers...

by Darren Davies Rainbow Beach RSL Sub Branch

Last year’s high school graduates are out in the big wide world. If you or your son or daughter has exciting plans after Year 12 in 2013, please drop us a line! Congratulations to you both and to all the other Year 12 graduates on the Right: Rainbow Beach school march at Anzac Day Cooloola Coast!

Mum, Cassie Head says, “We are tickled pink he is with a great bloke like Brett and his family. Brett has put other apprentices through with one finishing his trade qualifications last month, hence Dan’s opportunity.”

Ashlee, daughter of well known teachers Al and Therese, survived grade 12 and is off to bigger and better things. She was offered a place at Griffith University in her first course preference, a Bachelor of Business and Psychological Science spanning across four years.

Dan recently started as an apprentice plasterer with Brett Lindenberg, from BJ Plastering. The apprenticeship will take 3 and a half to 4 years to complete.

Traditionally the TAFE component has been 4 blocks of 3 weeks full time, 5 full days a week, 8am - 4pm, but this year the system is changing. Instead, Cassie says it is proposed that all the written work will be performed online and assessed onsite - charting new waters for everyone. Dan is living with his Mum Cassie (and his Dad, Ashley when he is home) and spends time with his girlfriend’s family in Gympie.

Dan, ready for work

PRIL IS ONE of our busiest months each year as we prepare for Rainbow Beach Anzac Day ceremonies. It is a day for reflection and celebration. We honour those that served and many that paid ultimately by sacrifice, we also celebrate and enjoy the freedoms that we all enjoy today. The Rainbow Beach RSL Sub Branch would like to thank all those community businesses and citizens that recently

“Dan was chosen because he had completed Year 12, was a big strong lad, getting his licence this month, keen and willing worker and is an early riser! Dan is loving the work and the crew he works for.”

supported and contributed towards our Anzac Day raffles by a great variety of prize donations. All proceeds will benefit the Surf Life Saving Nippers, Rainbow State School and other organisations. For all that have assisted us on the lead up to Anzac Day and during Anzac Day Services, without you, we would struggle to conduct those services, thank you. We wish to congratulate Year 7 student Samuel Sharman, for winning the 2014

“I’m hopeful I will be able to handle the work load as well as managing an exciting social life now that I am 18,” Ashlee confesses. Although slightly apprehensive about starting a new life in Brisbane Ashlee is eager to meet new people and gain a little more independence. “Navigating Brisbane is Top: Anzac Day march at TCB Ashlee (right) with a friend at her graduation also rather daunting for me. Anzac Day Essay Competition “Women at War”. Every year it’s a tough contest to judge as there are many great entries by the year 7 students, all students should be proud by what they submitted. This year we have applied for Government funded community grants programs for Rainbow Beach. There is a new project for our local school as with improvements towards existing infrastructure at our public area of remembrance, cenotaph

and surrounds. Anzac Day 2015 will be the 100th year, the Centenary of the landing of our troops at Anzac Cove, Gallipoli. We know there will be many ceremonies across the nation that will put extra efforts into more flamboyant Services and improvements to existing infrastructure, we at Rainbow Beach will certainly play our part as we do every year to remember and honour those that fell before us. Lest we forget.

to the same roost site year after year. Counting the birds regularly and then comparing the counts over time gives a good idea of how successful the breeding season has been up in the northern hemisphere and also how the birds have managed on their long flights north and then south again. Unfortunately, shorebird numbers are declining every year but each year we see a similar mix of birds on each of the roost sites. However, there is one bird that I have not seen for a couple of years.

Terek Sandpipers have only been found on one site south of Inskip Point and I have not seen them on this site for some time. They roost in mangrove trees with Grey-tailed Tattlers. When they are roosting they both tuck their heads under their wings. Because they are very similar in size and both grey and white coloured they are very difficult to identify. bills.

For some time I have been hoping to get close views of these birds but each time I approach their roost they fly off to the other side of the bay before I can get my binoculars up or my camera focused on them. This last week was different. The birds stayed sitting on the branches and I was able to photograph them. There are still Terek Sandpipers mixed in with the Grey-tailed Tattlers! From what I saw before the birds flew off approximately a quarter of the flock were Terek Sandpipers. This time they flew off because a Tern flew too close over their roosting tree! If you want to join our monthly shorebird counts then phone Dorothy Pashniak: 54880057 and if you want to read more about the birds I see every week then visit my blog at http:// www.sandystraitsandbeyond.blogspot. com.au/

Y NOW most of the shorebirds from around our bays and beaches have left on their long migration northwards. It will not be until next spring that we will know how many of them have managed their flight north, breeding in the arctic, and then their flight back here again. By that time many of them will have flown 22,000 kilometres. That is – if they make it! Each year we are losing many thousands of shorebirds. The biggest problem is that shorebirds are site faithful – which simply means that they not only return to the same sites in Australia each year but they also use the same stopover sites on their journeys. If they find that the wetlands where they rest and eat have been drained since their last visit it is a diaster. They exhaust their stores of energy to get there and cannot fly any further in search of food. The proof ofNate, this was seen inand 2006 when Tamara Tori are calling on all coastal families to start a South Korea built a 30 kilometre sea wall Little Athletics Club to drain an area of shallow tidal flats for human use. The Snapper Creek public jetty is a multi-use facility

Site of the proposed jetty at Norman Point

Tin Can Bay fishing jetty in limbo Words and Images by Julie Hartwig

I

N NOVEMBER 2012, Councillor Mark McDonald promoted a campaign to have a recreational fishing jetty built at Norman Point. Petitions were circulated through the community to gather support for the proposal, which involved construction of a 100-metre jetty extending from the Norman Point rotunda, across the sand flats to what is known locally as the “40 Foot Hole” in Tin Can Inlet. At an estimated cost of $3 – 4 million, it was never going to be a cheap project to build, but Cr McDonald pressed the Council and the understanding put about at the time was that the jetty would be built by Council if the State Government would provide the funds. It’s worth nothing here

that there has since been a change in State Government. This wasn’t the first attempt to have such a facility built in the town. A similar proposal saw the light of day in 2001, but the project stalled and nothing came of it. This latest proposal was believed to have a better chance of success. At the time, Cr McDonald said a public jetty would be good for the local economy and boost tourist numbers by providing a facility that would attraction recreational anglers. Current facilities for shore-based recreational fishing are almost nonexistent. The public jetty in Snapper Creek is a multi-use facility administered by the Harbour Master. A long list of conditions

dictates public use of the jetty and renders it a far from idea facility. If vessels are tied up to the pontoon, there is little or no room for fishing, and space is limited when not in use by vessels. There is no other jetty available for fishing in the Tin Can Bay area and tidal conditions often mean that beach fishing conditions are far from ideal. So what happened to this latest proposal? Well, not a lot. Eighteen months down the track, enquiries amongst local recreational anglers reveal that this project appears to have gone the same way as the earlier proposal. Tin Can Bay Fishing Club member Lynn Milnes said, ‘I’ve heard nothing more since

the first initial flurry of interest back in 2012. It sounded like a good idea at the time, but like a lot of good ideas, they fizzle if the money isn’t there to make them happen.’ Concern has also been expressed by some boaties who moor and anchor vessels in Tin Can Inlet that the proposed location for the jetty is not ideal. One boatie said, ‘It would stick out into the inlet and be another obstacle to navigate in what is the narrowest part of the channel. With all the anchored boats in the Inlet, there are enough obstacles already. It would be quite exposed in adverse wind and sea conditions, too. Nobody could fish off it then.’

Rainbow Beach Police Beat By Senior Constable Mick Emery

Police praise Easter crowd behaviour

T

HE EASTER long weekend no doubt provided many happy memories for the thousands of visitors who descended on Rainbow Beach this year – picture perfect weather, great beach conditions and a family friendly atmosphere, all of which resulted in a very laid back and relaxed few days at the beach. The relaxed atmosphere was not lost on our visiting police – all of whom commented on how friendly everyone was. It is appropriate to publicly thank these extra police, who no doubt contributed to the safe and positive experience so many people had this year. Police were highly visible in town, around the camp sites and on the beaches – and there was a pretty good chance of being breath tested at least once. The result was that the beaches and roads were safer – with only two drink drivers detected out of the thousands tested. Particular thanks must go to Teala and Katie from the Mounted Unit, whose horses provided a unique policing presence on the beach (which was particularly popular with the kids). We were also well supported by Gympie police and the Wide Bay Tactical Crime Squad, all of whom were very active around town and right down to Teewah Beach.

It was incredibly pleasing to see such a large volume of people in a small town, all co-existing in relative harmony, despite the long queues over Easter. Outside of the Easter weekend, however, there have been a few incidents that have kept us busy, again highlighting the need for property security. At 1am on April 15, police observed a BMW visiting a Green Valley Drive address, and quickly established that the vehicle had been stolen from the Sunshine Coast. Some quick detective work by Tin Can Bay police later that day resulted in a 25 year old man being charged with drug offences, and a further address in Cooloola Drive being searched. It was here that the offenders from the stolen car were located, along with drug offences detected. In all, five offenders were charged with 16 offences including Production of a Dangerous Drug, Unlawful Use of Motor Vehicle and Burglary. The two local men can thank their associates from the Sunshine Coast for drawing police attention to their respective addresses. This incident again highlights the need to secure valuables, including car keys – you never know who is in town. Thanks again to all for their patience and laid back approach over Easter. Until next time, stay safe.

There have been enormous changed over the last fifty years. Some of them for the better: the recognition of the part women play in the progress and betterment of our society, our treatment of those less fortunate than ourselves, more tolerance of the opinions and lifestyles of others. Some for the worst: more worries about job security and jobs for our children, more families needing two incomes, less time for caring, friendship and being at peace.

OUNCIL IS currently preparing a Tracks and Trails Strategy for the Gympie region. The Tracks and Trails Strategy will assist the public with access to tracks and trails of the region for outdoor recreation. The plan is being developed to provide additional recreation, tourism and economic benefits. The region’s recreation trails include those within natural public areas that provide for horse riding, mountain bike ISHING OATING riding andAND walking only. The Gympie region provides regionally significant trails including (part of) the Cooloola Great Walk and Bicentennial National Trail, as well as more localised networks such as the Victory Heights Trail Network. GAS The opportunity exists to enhance this to provide additional recreation, tourism and economic benefits. Council wants your input into how and where you believe the tracks and trails network could be improved for locals and visitors within the Gympie Region. Factors to consider: • Only four major trails are listed on the website, are more trails - even the smaller ones going to be added to our strategy? Local members of the Queensland Wader Study Group count shorebirds on roost sites around the bay every month. Migratory shorebirds return to the same roost site year after year. Counting the birds regularly and then comparing the counts over time gives a good idea of how successful the breeding season has been up in the northern hemisphere and also how the birds have managed on their long flights north and then south again.

Cooloola Coast Medical Transport S ince 2003, when Cooloola Coast Medical Transport was first formed, it has seen an array of volunteers giving up their time to help others. To this day we continue to see new faces wanting to contribute to the community by offering their skills and time. The majority of our volunteers are either retired or semi-retired and find they just need to do something else and what better way than to interact with fellow volunteers and at the same time assist those who need help. There are many ways you can volunteer your time with Medical Transport which includes driving or washing and cleaning our vehicles. You could become a fund raiser selling

raffle tickets and money boards or help with our Bingo which is held every Sunday at Cooloola Coast Bowls Club eyes down 1.30 pm. We have a very busy booking office, maybe you have the skills to help out there? Our transport service is available to residents of the Cooloola Coast for non urgent out of town medical appointments. We travel as far north as Hervey Bay and Brisbane to the south including the Sunshine Coast, Nambour and Gympie. We have six late model fully maintained cars and operate Monday to Friday with weekend trips by special arrangement only.

ATILDA CLARK and Rachel MacFarlane will duet with their guitars and vocals, both girls are undertaking the music program at Gympie High School. Tarni Palmer who has switched from guitar to piano will duet with her teacher Lucia Phelan, also from Rainbow. Joelene will be returning with her flute, certainly an act not to miss she will be backed by Pam Graham on piano. Both Joelene and Pam were classically trained in England. Terry Tebble from TCB is back with more songs and I have been corrected that he is a tenor not a baritone. The regulars will again be there, we appreciate and enjoy their contribution: Ross Brown (vocals), Neil Sutton (its anyone’s guess what instrument he turns up with), Jo will team with Ron Bygraves with ukulele and guitar, Rob Medcalfe

Music Plus ‘with a lot of laughter’ in Cooloola Cove T HE band started the evening with The Muppet Show Theme which was greatly enjoyed. Then everyone sang ‘There’s a Kind of Hush all over the World’, and it was lovely to hear the raised voices. Unfortunately Mick Beswick our Continuity Man was unable to be with us but no matter we had Colleen Phie instead who has the funniest of stories to tell and added more to her normal contribution. Thanks Colleen. The three ‘mouse-kit-ears’, Emma, Emily and Maevelyn were as accomplished as always and we can’t say enough to Joanna Gorka, who so wonderfully tutors them. No doubt they realise what fortunate girls they are to have such an excellent teacher. One new item was an Irish Ballad sung in harmony by Judy and Dee. A twosome that originated many years ago and recently met again. Well done!

Unfortunately the wind and rain kept some of our usual audience indoors, but we were very pleased to welcome more than fifty who ventured out. Jo and Tommy, calling themselves ”ENCORE”, are a new duo who are quickly becoming known in the area and receive paid bookings. They always give their best and we were not disappointed. Sue Flower is always rewarding to hear, played her trusty mandolin and closed the programme with Pam accompanying on the piano. Next Music Plus Night we hope to offer another varied group of performers, musicians, story tellers, jokers and more. Don’t miss the last Music Plus Night of this short season on Thursday 29th May at 7pm. If you’d like to perform, please contact Pam 5488 0110 or sykapalua@ spiderweb.com.au

The pub crawl begins by Peter and Margaret Grant

Tin Can Bay Camera Club

Well, we told you that we were doing a pub crawl this year. So, here we go. We started the year off with the Rainbow Beach Hotel. Unfortunately, we do not have a picture of the old pub but here we are out the front of the new hotel.

The modern appearance of the hotel hides its earliest beginnings in the 1960s. Sandminers were the first to use the area as a ‘town’. By 1969, Back Beach, as it was known to the locals who frequented the area, was gazetted as the town of Rainbow Beach. This new UR JUDGE, Gary Guest of Pomona Rainbow Beach Hotel was built on the Photography Club, was presented site of the ‘old pub’ in 2010. with a wonderful selection of images

Club members recently visited the Mothar Mountain Rock Pools and more outings are planned for the future. The May print subject is “Nature”. It’s also a well-known 12volt camping place for travellers. We camped beside the local cricket grounds with 2 other travellers. And the amazing thing was that, even though there was no mobile telephone coverage, we had great TV reception from our Saturn Antenna. There is a bit of controversy about whether the Taylors Arm Cosmopolitan Hotel was the one that Slim Dusty sang about or a hotel in Ingham, Qld. HE RUN OF fantastic weather we experienced over the Easter continued with a stunner of an ANZAC day long weekend! We still had plenty of holiday makers making the most of it and enjoying an extended break. Great conditions during the school holidays saw plenty of boats on the water and a number of quality fish being caught. The waterways were busy - glassed out and perfect conditions with spots like Teebar Ledge well patronised. We have had reports of school mackerel around Ida Island, quality javelin fish coming from the creeks and even the odd late season mangrove jack. As the weather continues to cool down and the water temp drops species like mangrove jack and barramundi will begin to slow down. There has been some good catches of flathead of late with a 1.7kg specimen being weighed in by one local angler over the Easter weekend. The ledges have been fishing well for a mixed bag of reef fish such as blackall, parrot and cod. Upside of the cooler water temperatures is species such as snapper will start showing up in greater numbers. The shallow reefs around Tin Can Bay are a great option for those with smaller boats wanting to get amongst a few of these great eating fish. Peak times are often just after first light or around dusk. Whole baits of pilchard or squid working well along with soft plastics and hard bodied lures.

Over the ANZAC long weekend, early morning and late afternoon high tides provided those anglers wanting to chase a few late season jack a chance to head up the creeks while mid-morning low tides are great for families wanting to get out and chase a few whiting. Live yabbies or worms are often the best bait for these fish whilst using a small number 6 Mustad bloodworm hook will account for a more consistent hook up. Low tides around midday are a great time to target species such as flathead and whiting on the sand flats. Fishing the drains where the water is running off the sand flats about an hour or so before the bottom of the tide. Casting upstream and working soft plastics with the tide or trolling hard bodied lures such as Live Lures Micro Mullet or Sebile Koolie Minnows along the edge of the channels are a couple of my preferred methods for chasing flathead. For whiting try using worms or live yabbies fishing similar areas on the run out tide or over yabbie banks on the incoming tide. For more information, stop past our store located at 6/6 Scullett Drive in Tin Can Bay. We also have a range of hire boats including Hobie kayaks to suit everyone licensed or unlicensed. Keep the entries coming in for our fish of the month competition for your chance to win a $50 voucher to spend in store. Have a great weekend and be safe on the water.

Warriors power at Tin Can Bay meet

by Head Coach Bobbie-jo Parton Go Warriors! What a great Swim club we have here in Rainbow. The Warriors went to the Cooloola Crocs swim meet on Saturday and turned heads. The Crocs were very welcoming and ran it well. With 12 swimmers entered in to the meet, we ended up leaving with 8 medals between them and most importantly personal best times broken. Well done Kyani, Samuel, Zac, Annie, Hannah, Jazz, Luxie, Ryan, Seth, Joel, and Arwin. Annie won her IM Heat by a whole pool length Our dolphin members (under 7’s) had a blast attending their first swim meet. Without fail they all beat their personal best times and had shown us yet again they improve in every meet and club night. 7 & under

Rain, hail or shine ... Nippers End of Season Breakup by Corey Bradley

W

ELL, WE’VE ALL survived yet another exciting season filled with fun games, activities, beach & surf safety awareness, new skills and fitness. This season we’ve had around 80 Nippers registered with our Club, and I’m sure that each one of them has benefited from the program through better safety awareness, surf skills, rescue techniques, first aid/CPR and much more. Hopefully some of these kids will continue in nippers, and progress on to become lifesavers, and in turn help to educate tomorrow’s kids in matters involving surf safety and rescue. I thank the Age Managers and Assistants - without them, there would simply be no nippers program. They are the ones who have volunteered to take responsibility for coaching an age group, educating the kids on Surf and Beach Safety, Water and Board skills. They’ve kept the children safe and entertained for two hours solid each Sunday, rain, hail or shine…. This season would not have been the success it was without a lot of support, so I sincerely thank: Water Safety Team (without them, we can’t even get in the water), Shane Handy, Helen Brown , Justin Schooth, Mark Lawler, Sign-on ladies , Tracey Hethorn,
