Left to right: Heather McNamara, Heather Chandler, and Heather Duke

“Everyone at this school wants me as a friend or a fuck.

The Heathers were the original mean girls clique. Hailing from Westerburg High in

suburban Ohio, their first names are not the only thing these girls have in common. They are popular, beautiful, fashionable, and above all things: cruel. With the snappy and witty dialogue, Waters depicts this clique as lacking any time of emotional empathy. Heather Chandler is the ring leader (well until she dies) and is arguably the most shallow and evil among the three. She dates college guys, spends most of her time belittling Heather Duke and poking fun of her bulimia, and says that her afterlife is sooooo boring. As for Heather McNamara, she is the clueless cheerleader that is only passionate about following the in-crowd. The Heathers proved to be a direct reflection of society in a Reagan Entertainment world. Image vs. reality was significant in a political and societal sense. Everyone aspired to be like a Heather and be part of the in-crowd so much that they were willing to contemplate suicide because thats what the cool kids were doing.
