“Why Are You Such A Mega Bitch!?”

“Because I Can Be.” Daniel Waters wrote the 1988 dark comedy, Heathers. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Waters defined the film as being unlike any other teen flick made before. The teen films at the time were John Hughes fun comedies which had dark elements but no one was going to the Stephen King side of high school that nobody wanted to look at. Although there has been many teen comedies that have taken elements from Heathers, most seem to be weaker duplicates. In the following, I will examine the affect Heathers has had on not just teen comedies, but on society in the late 80’s in which it had refuted any form of Reaganite Entertainment and in turn had disastrous box office sales. It was not only until recent years that the film gained notoriety among youths which makes me believe it might have been ahead of its time.
