The whimsical animal sculptures of Barry Flanagan are celebrated as playful and lively in contrast to the work of his Minimalist contemporaries. His most prolific and defining motif is the hare, often appearing in his bronze sculptural work in acrobatic poses. Flanagan’s other recurring characters include horses, dogs, and those included here, the jackass and elephant. Although his career began with conceptual art, the anthropomorphic bronze sculptures that he began to produce in the late 1970s brought him international acclaim. Flanagan’s work is held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Tate Gallery in London, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.
