Filipponi means family. The logo used on their wine label today is the same brand that was used on the family’s beef cattle. After many years living in Sonoma County and frequently visiting the Paso Robles wine region, they fell in love with the landscape, the people, and most importantly, the wine. It was only a matter of time before they found the perfect plot of land to plant their estate vineyard. Planted in 2001, their estate vineyard, named Riven Rock, lies 6.5 miles from the Pacific Ocean and just east of the town of Cambria. Seven acres of vines grace south-facing slopes in a cool climate frequented by ocean breezes and morning fog. Lean, rocky, marine-origin soils and steep hillsides produce very small yields of extremely concentrated fruit, while the maritime influence keeps the acids fresh and vibrant. You’ll experience bright and crisp varieties such as Riesling, along with the fruit forward flavors of Pinot Noir.

Louisa Sawyer Lindquist has worked in the wine industry since her senior year of college. Her experience is in all aspects of the wine business, including restaurants, retail, wholesale, import-export, national sales and winemaking. The SLO Coast region experienced the same early harvest that was typical throughout the state with most growers completing harvest by the third week of September, assisted by the fact that our region is widely planted to the early ripening cool climate varieties of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Low yields resulting from the ongoing drought also contributed to the early harvest. Concentrated flavors and bright acidity describes the wines from 2015. SLO Wine is proud to present this etched Jeroboam (4.5 Liters) of 2015 Chardonnay, hand-crafted by winemaker Jean-Pierre Wolff of Wolff Vineyards and etched by local artist Candice Norcross. Former teachers at the University of Michigan, the couple left the “Groves of Academe” for the vineyards of California in 1981 in order to begin a new life in the wine industry. With its first crush Claiborne & Churchill announced its special focus, producing 565 cases of Dry Riesling and Dry Gewürztraminer, inspired by the fruity but dry dinner wines of the French province of Alsace. Today Claiborne & Churchill produces about 8,000 cases of wine each year, sourcing grapes from vineyards in the cool maritime valleys of California’s Central Coast and its own small estate vineyards. .In 1995 Clay and Fredericka completed construction on their new and permanent winery building. This structure, a noteworthy example of environmental architecture, is a “straw bale building,” the first of its kind in California. With sixteen-inch thick walls made of bales of rice straw, the winery is so well insulated that it maintains a constant cellar temperature, without the need for mechanical cooling or heating. 11. You will also sleep among the vines, with a two night stay in Tolosa’s Edna Ranch Vineyard Cottage, located in the beautiful Edna Valley. The 3 bedroom, 2 bath cottage is surrounded by majestic oaks, rolling hills, and award-winning vineyards. Its private setting enables you to enjoy a tranquil, pastoral atmosphere. These quiet surroundings are a perfect retreat in between wine tasting excursions in Edna Valley, with easy access to the town of San Luis Obispo. Included in this enchanted offering are two magnums of Tolosa’s Hollister – Edna Ranch Single Vineyard Pinot Noir. As a testament to Tolosa’s dedication to crafting exemplary Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Tolosa has pinpointed the best sites and fruit for these varietals outside – and inside – Edna Valley to create its Single Vineyard Series. This series of very small-lot, artisanal wines invites exploration of renowned appellations and acclaimed vineyards throughout California, and the Hollister – Edna Ranch Pinot Noir from the estate vineyard confirms Edna Valley’s place in this distinguished company. Available for tasting as barrel samples and purchase as futures before they are released each year, many of these wines sell out before they are bottled. Two couples will each receive a Tolosa 1772 Club membership for one year. The Tolosa 1772 Club membership includes 3 bottles of wines from the 1772 series shipped 4 times per year, as well as all of the benefits of the 1772 Club. These wines are often crafted especially for wine club members and include Tolosa’s signature limited-production estate wines - 1772 Pinot Noir and 1772 Chardonnay. Cowboy dreams of owning a cattle ranch like his grandfather brought Vintner Robin Baggett to Edna Valley almost 40 years ago; the area’s wine-rich heritage kept him here. Tolosa was founded in the heart of Edna Valley, nestled amongst the northwest to southeast running volcanic hills of San Luis Obispo County and on the frontier for the most complex cool-climate varietals in California. Tolosa’s Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays reflect the cold Pacific wind that sweeps down the coast and funnels into the valley, as well as the remarkable diversity of soil types: ingredients for nuanced and balanced wines of distinctive character. Lot Restrictions: Must be used for June Moon Celebration Weekend, June 1, 2018

21. Baileyana “Artist Series” Donated by the Niven Family: Baileyana, Tangent & True Myth Wines -Three Hand-Etched 3 Liters of Baileyana Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah: 2015 Baileyana S-BAR Chardonnay 2014 Baileyana S-BAR Pinot Noir 2013 Baileyana S-BAR Syrah -Art inspired by Austrian painter Gustav Klimt and hand painted by Candice Norcross Baileyana, the flagship brand from the Niven Family, was started by matriarch Catharine Niven and is now in the expert hands of the second and third generations of the family. Baileyana wines are sourced from premier blocks within the Niven’s Paragon Vineyard, planted in 1973 by Catharine’s husband, Jack. Along with Baileyana, you can find the rest of the family’s portfolio: True Myth, Tangent, Zocker and Trenza at their tasting room at 5828 Orcutt Rd. in the Edna Valley. For this year’s auction, Niven Family Wine Estates is excited to present you with our Baileyana S-BAR auction lot! Our lot consists of three hand painted and etched 3L bottles of Baileyana SBAR wines from our estate vineyard. Each year our winemaker Christian Roguenant produces 3 reserve versions of our Baileyana varietals: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah, each are sourced from ‘selected blocks and rows’ from within our vineyard (hence the name, S-BAR). For this year’s auction, we have chosen three paintings by Austrian painter Gustav Klimt, to adorn each bottle. Gustav Klimpt was an Austrian Symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Art Nouveau (Vienna Secession) movement. His major works include paintings, murals, sketches, and other art objects. Klimt's primary subject was the female body, and his works are marked by a frank eroticism. In addition to his figurative works, which include allegories and portraits, he painted landscapes. Among the artists of the Vienna Secession, Klimt was the most influenced by Japanese art and its methods. Early in his artistic career, he was a successful painter of architectural decorations in a conventional manner. As he developed a more personal style, his work was the subject of controversy that culminated when the paintings he completed around 1900 for the ceiling of the Great Hall of the University of Vienna were criticized as pornographic. He subsequently accepted no more public commissions, but achieved a new success with the paintings of his "golden phase", many of which include gold leaf. Each bottle is etched and hand painted by renowned Central Coast artist Candice Norcross. We have been working with Candice for decades and her artistry never disappoints. Not only are the bottles a beautiful work of art that anyone would be proud to showcase in their cellar, but the wines are exquisite! Three distinct, small lot, single block, reserve wines from the Edna Valley that are true in varietal character and creating to showcase the best of the best within our vineyard. We hope you enjoy the Baileyana S-BAR wines! 22. Sun..Sun..Sun…Here We Come! Winner of the 2016 SLO County Visitor Destination Experience Award, this will be a day to remember! Your adventure begins with front door pick up service by Breakaway Tours, where you will be whisked away to some of San Luis Obispo Wine Country’s smallest producers… Your journey begins at Cal Poly's Wine & Viticulture Department with Benoit Lecat, Cal Poly's Wine and Viticulture Department Head and Wine Business Professor and Mike Sinor, owner/winemaker for Sinor-LaVallee Wines. Raised in Visalia, CA, Mike attended California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo with the objective of becoming a high school shop teacher. He financed his college education by working at several local wineries -- an experience that ignited his passion for the craft of making wine. Mike met his future wife, Cheri LaVallee, in a chemistry class at Cal Poly (now that's Chemistry 101). Benoît Lecat has had a long love affair with wines. His passion began with one sip of fine wine in a Belgian Michelin star restaurant in the mid-‘90s, propelling him into years of study that resulted in a career in wine and viticulture. Lecat, recently a member of the faculty of the School of Wine and Spirits Business in Dijon, France, became head of Cal Poly’s Wine and Viticulture Department last fall. His jovial personality, coupled with an extensive background in the business and marketing of wine, brings an invaluable perspective to his role leading the largest wine and viticulture program of its kind in the nation. Together Benoit and Mike will take you on a tour of the Wine & Viticulture Department. You're group will participate in a blending trail at the campus with students and department staff offering support in the true example of Cal Poly's motto: "Learn By Doing". Next, your tour continues and you will be taken to the point of origin--where all wine begins: in the vineyards. You’ll tour the vineyards in Edna Valley by trolley, courtesy of Pacific Vineyard Company. Depending on the time of year you travel, you will see demonstrations of pruning, soil and cover crop treatments, and possibly even sample some grapes from the vine! Today, in keeping with the Central Coast’s cool climate, Pacific Vineyard Company currently grows eighteen different varietals. This range includes the more common Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to the obscure Teroldego and Gruener Veltliner varietals. With roughly 1,400 acres certified sustainable, and more on the way, our vineyard practices have changed greatly to meet the demand of our changing environment, prepare for the future, and work with our clients to provide the highest quality fruit. You’ll be treated to a delicious lunch provided by The Spoon Trade. Chef Jacob Town will use locally sourced products to create modern dishes that nod to the classics. Look for comforting entrées, such as Fried Chicken and Waffles or our grilled Pork Chop. Our casual lunch menu is a hybrid of brunch and dinner with an "American Tapas" feel, while offering sandwiches and sides to satisfy more traditional cravings. Enjoy lunch at Saucelito Canyon with the Greenough Family. Here you will be immersed in the history of the valley, as well as taste the very unique 1880 Old Vine Zinfandel. Bill Greenough learned that the vineyard was planted by Rancho Saucelito homesteader Henry Ditmas in 1880. After purchasing the property, Bill painstakingly cleared the scrub from the vineyard, cut the dead wood from each vine, then dug down a foot to find a strong shoot that could be trained into a new fruit-producing, head-pruned vine. The shoots grew from the original roots and the vines remain ungrafted to this day. After apprenticing under his father, 2nd generation winemaker Tom Greenough has ascended to the position of winemaker, finishing his 8th vintage in 2017. “This is where I am at home,” he says. “I’m like my father. I like working outside and getting dirty, and taking a
hands-on approach to the winemaking. I am looking forward to trying new things while maintaining the family traditions that we have here.” We end the day beachside where Mike Sinor will treat you for a toast of Pet Nat along with an array of aromatic white wines paired with locally sourced oysters at the Sinor-LaVallee tasting room in Avila Beach. Lot Restrictions: Must be redeemed by January 2018-June 2018. Valid Sunday-Friday (No Saturday Availability). Date must be agreed upon by all parties. Driver gratuity not included. 27. Fund A Need: The Food Bank Coalition of SLO County SUPPORTED BY YOU! -Benefitting The Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County SLO Wine Country is committed to giving back to our community. This year, we are partnering with The Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo as our 2017 Fund-A-Need Recipient. The Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County is a non-profit, tax exempt organization, serving all of San Luis Obispo County through its direct food programs and network of community partners. Our mission is to alleviate hunger in San Luis Obispo County and build a healthier community. Last year we distributed nearly 6 million pounds of food to help our neighbors struggling with hunger. Nearly half of the food distributed was fresh produce, including produce harvested locally by our GleanSLO program. We collaborate with our nation’s network of Food Banks and effectively utilize our team of 2,800 volunteers, keeping our overhead at a very low 6%. This year’s Fund-A-Need will support the Children’s Farmers Markets Program. At our 20 monthly Children’s Farmers Markets, 1,300 children of all ages do their own shopping, picking out free, high-quality fruits and vegetables, many of which are gleaned from local farms and yards. Markets take place each month throughout the year in nearly every community in the county. At each market, tables are piled high with 8-12 different types of high-quality seasonal fruits and vegetables. Each child receives a bag and pretend one-dollar bills. Signs tell the children the prices and they choose which produce to “purchase.” Nutrition educators play games with the children and hand out tastings and recipes so families can cook with unfamiliar foods. At most sites, older children volunteer to help set up and clean up the market and they serve as the market farmers, taking the play money and distributing the produce to children. Children take home bags filled with snap peas, apples, broccoli, oranges, lettuce and squash to be eaten by themselves and their families while they deepen their understanding of farming and fresh foods. School districts and nonprofits throughout the county collaborate with us to provide the sites and staff for the program. Sites include schools, Boys & Girls Club programs, People’s Self-Help Housing complexes, and Migrant Head Start programs. The selected neighborhoods and rural communities throughout the county have high levels of child poverty. All children in the program participate in the markets, and some markets are open to the entire school or neighborhood. Nearly nine in ten parents surveyed said that the Children’s Farmers Market has changed the way their family eats. And 94% of children said that it got them excited about eating more fruits and vegetables. Children tell us: “I like farmer’s market because I get to learn about new food.” “I like that it has healthy food and that it always has what I’m looking for.” “I love children's farmers market because vegetables give me energy.” To learn more about our programs serving San Luis Obispo County, please visit www.slofoodbank.org.
