For babies, toddlers and new parents Raising children is both a joy and a challenge. Babies do not come with instruction manuals. Questions often arise about the best ways to nurture and care for children as they grow from infants and toddlers, and then preparing to board the school bus on the first day of kindergarten. Community Education offers a wide range of classes, programs and services to meet your changing needs and interests, in addition to learning and enrichment opportunities for early learners ages birth - five. Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE): ECFE offers activities, classes, events and playtimes designed to give families information, ideas and skills to support their child’s growth and development from birth to kindergarten. Preschool: Preschool serves as an introduction to the school experience. Licensed teachers work with students to target essential learning areas before entering kindergarten. Preschool enrichment: Community Schools offers a wide range of enrichment activities and athletic programs to provide young children with additional opportunities to learn and grow.

The adult basic education program serves over 4,500 students from approximately 100 different countries each year.

Swimming lessons: Community Education offers swimming lessons for children from six months to five years of age to increase comfort in the water and build a foundation of basic aquatic and water safety skills.

Parent resources: Community Education and the Anoka-Hennepin school district offer a wide range of resources to support families raising early learners ages birth to five. *Home visits and early childhood screenings are offered to identify challenges early. For children Community Education plays a critical role in helping young people grow from children to teens. Youth-focused programs and services provide more than just education or entertainment - they contribute to a safe and healthy community by providing young people with engaging activities that help them grow into productive citizens. Activities and enrichment: The Community Schools program provides fun activities and learning opportunities for children after-school, in the evenings and on the weekends to enhance academic and social experiences while students are out of school. Athletics: Elementary and middle school athletic programs are supervised and led by trained coaches, licensed teachers or knowledgeable staff who emphasize skill development, participation, teamwork, and respect for others. Community Education also offers camps and clinics to help students in grade levels from preschool up to high school.

Youth programs follow nationally recognized youth program quality assessment (YPQA) standards and processes to develop and improve our curriculum, classes and programs to advance child and youth development in our schools. Tutoring: Tutor Connect, an academic support program aligned with the K-12 curriculum, allows staff to work with students in one-on-one or small group settings to provide an extra academic boost, to catch up or speed ahead! Youth Service: Community Education coordinates meaningful leadership and service opportunities, trips and projects to support the community.

Children that participate in high-quality after-school programs go to school more, receive better grades and perform better on tests.

The Anoka-Hennepin School District serves all or part of 13 different cities and townships, and each has its own unique needs and characteristics. Community Education maximizes taxpayer investments in K-12 education by extending learning opportunities for residents of all ages, and by using school facilities year-round. Whether it’s providing non-profit organizations and groups with access to school facilities or supporting our schools by coordinating the time, energy and talents of volunteers - we strive to offer each community the services it needs to stay healthy and connected.

Approximately 5,000 participants enroll in classes exclusively for adults with special needs each year.

Facility use: Community Education manages the scheduling of district facilities by providing community organizations with access to 37 school and district buildings - including athletic fields, auditoriums, cafeterias, classrooms, computer labs, designated pools, gymnasiums and meeting spaces before- and after–school, and on the weekends. Flyer distribution: Community organizations may distribute news through schools by collaborating with Community Education.

Parent Involvement: Community Education promotes partnerships, based on the belief that parents and families are a child’s most important teacher. The parent involvement program assists parent-teacher organizations (PTOs) and booster clubs, and communicates information about legislation that impacts our district and our students. Volunteer opportunities: Community Education employs staff at each school to coordinate the time, energy and talents of dedicated community members hoping to serve our schools. Approximately 9,400 volunteers contribute over 162,000 hours of service to our schools and programs each year – an estimated value of $3.6 million.
