F

or Svetlana Fedina, fashion is more than simply a means to an ends, it’s an opportunity to make the world a better place. Her Amsterdam-based, organic clothing company—StillSveta— is challenging our preconceived notions of the role fashion plays in our lives and its contribution to the world. “Fashion can be an effective way to convey a

HEAVEN HAS HEELS holiday 2016 | @HHHEELS

message serving a higher purpose other than merely improving appearances,” she explains. Fedina sees each collection as an “exploration of consciousness” aiming to raise awareness about climate change, animal care and a more sustainable way of life. How? Here’s an example, each StillSveta coat is made from environmentally friendly fabrics and a percentage of profits goes

to an animal charity. The coats are lined with a unique print, inspired by natural phenomena, created in a socially responsible printing organization. The result is streetchic, ready-to-wear that transcends seasons. With a preference for block colors— pink, purple and turquoise—Fedina gravitates to fabrics such as organic wool and cashmere, choosing “soft and cuddly options” which make the wearer feel comfortable-yetstylish. Creating both men’s and women’s wear she finds inspiration in the style of the “U.K. gentleman” and big city street wear. Her vision? Somewhere between the two, she adds.

As for wear-ability, Fedina is aware of her Amsterdam-based market. She’s able to combine her creative vision with the needs of her customer base which is rapidly increasing. “I find that many people in the Netherlands like to ‘play it safe’ by wearing black,” she says. “It’s one of the reasons why my last collection is manly based on black wool. However, I do have some injections of pink and blue colors.” Originally from Moscow, it was her move to London which provided the inspiration Fedina needed to pursue her love of art and fashion. “At that time, I styled fashion and still life photography,” she explains. “In 2014, I decided to move to Amsterdam. This is when I found my purpose: fashion design for causes I care about.” In a world of fast fashion and throw-away goods, StillSveta is proving that there is more to fashion than fabric. Here, is another medium to make a difference in a creative-yet-engaging way. Still at the early stages of the brand, StillSveta is definitely one to add to your watch list. REBEL YELL WELCOME TO THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF BERND SERAFIN THALER; WHERE THE HEELS ARE HIGH AND THE RULES WERE MADE TO BE BROKEN.

S

ince graduating from the Fashion Institute Palace Hetzendorf in 2012, Thaler has attracted world wide attention for his unique and, in his own words, “over-the-top” designs. Falling for footwear, after being introduced to all facets of design—from knitwear to millinery—Thaler has emerged on the scene as one of the industry’s new and exciting innovators. Vehemently opposed to mass production and trend-driven consumerism, Thaler has set his sights on delivering conversation-worthy designs using the finest quality materials. Footwear lovers, get ready to be wowed. Growing up in Austria, Thaler was drawn to fashion from a young age. “In school, my teachers began to notice my strong interest and potential,” he explains. “They suggested I apply at the Fashion Institute of Vienna located at the Palace Hetzendorf.” Which is exactly what he did.

As part of his training he studied everything from ready-to-wear to millinery but it was footwear that stole his heart. He quickly developed his own signature style and a growing list of fans. So much so, he decided to go out on his own after directly after graduating. Inspired by his country’s beliefs, history and aesthetic, Thaler’s designs are heavily influenced by the monarchies of central Europe— particularly the Baroque and Rococo. “An era when it was all about beauty not comfort,” warns Thaler. Showcasing classic silhouettes with unexpected embellishments, each shoe is handmade using only the finest materials—a homage to tradition with a creative signature of his own. Expert to find tactile leather, exotic skins and unexpected materials interlaced in feminine-yetwearable designs. “I like to experiment with fairly uncommon materials,” says Thaler. “I feel like it helps the design process as you have to think outside the box and design a shoe from another perspective.” With a slew of editorials, commercial engagements and loyal customers, it’s the designs themselves that provide the ultimate satisfaction for Thaler. “Every collection is a new achievement for me, seeing the finished product after months of designing and sampling, amazes me every time and makes it worth the effort and me proud of what I’m doing.” With an eye for design and a passion for innovation expect to see more from this talented designers. CITISCAPES Artist, fashion designer and photographer Sheila Pazos showcased a memorable Autumn/ Winter collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid. Entitled, Artificial Paradise, the collection is inspired by the book Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino. The book features a series of travel stories based on

conversations between Marco Polo and Tartar emperor Kublai Khan. Each chapter describes a fantastic city bearing a woman’s name. This, Pazos brought to life by memorizing prints, oversized accessories and incredibly head pieces. We can’t wait to see what’s next. — SheilaPazos.com

GOOD DEED SHOES THIS YEAR ALONE, OVER 500 GIRLS IN KENYA, PALESTINE, PAKISTAN AND PERU HAVE BENEFITED FROM THE SALES OF SHOES BY SHAHERAZAD. A NOBLE GOAL, A PASSION FOR FOOTWEAR AND AN ENERGY THAT CANNOT BE MATCHED HAVE RESULTED IN ONE OF OUR MOST INSPIRING FOOTWEAR STORIES YET. Meet Shaherazad Umbreen the brains and beauty behind Shoes by Shaherazad, a line of footwear designed for comfort, care and compassionate consumers. How did you become involved in footwear design? It’s been a longstanding passion of mine—for as long as I can remember—to find a

way to help women and girls to live happy and empowered lives, I just didn’t know how I was going to go about it. That is, until one day, I had the idea of designing a new product; a product which had no superpowers whatsoever but which would have the power to change lives for good. I’m a 39 year old business woman and I decided if I was going to invent something new, it may as well be a product which would wow the market. A regular pair of heels just wasn’t going to be good enough. It had to be something spectacular. So, I thought long and hard about all the things which mean a lot to me: the empowerment of women, the alleviation of poverty, the sustainability of my designs, the styles of fashion I wanted

to tap into and of course, my love of business. The heels which I have worn to work throughout my career have been beautiful pieces, but towards the end of the work day they have all had the “ouch” factor. So I set myself the challenge of creating a pair of heels which would be pain free...For 18 hours! Of course, no-one should be on their feet for that long, but if they were, wouldn’t it be great if there was no “ouch” after a few hours? I’ve always loved flamingos and set about studying them to understand how they manage to stand for hours on end with poise and elegance. It turns out that it’s all in the math of how their body weight is distributed. Inspired by this, I applied a mathematical approach to my heels and voila, weight is spread in such a way that balancing on a three inch heel becomes pain free. The heels took two, long years to develop, but develop them I did, and after getting them road tested from board room to bar, they were ready to be launched. But I wasn’t mentally ready to sell them until I found a way for my heels to make lots of women and girls happy. It was because I wanted to make sure that the heels had the power to change lives for good that I decided that some of the profits from each pair would go to directly support a woman or girl living in poverty. The money would be used to help them gain an education, so they

could go on and break the cycle of poverty for themselves, ensuring an independent and sustainable future. Through a partnership with GlobalGiving U.K. I selected five projects in four countries, all focused on giving women and girls access to education. This year, 500 girls have been helped already in Kenya, Palestine, Pakistan and Peru. It is my aim to invest in every country in the world over the coming years, where there are females in need of educational support. It’s a sad fact that girls in developing countries are often not given the same access to education and employment as males. I want to help change this, and I know there are many other women who want to help empower others too by addressing the imbalance of opportunity. What if girls and women were able to find their own happy ending? What if we could have “equally ever after” instead of “happily ever after?” And that’s not all. There’s also another happy twist to the tale. I wanted to help women cut down on the amount of money they spend on fashion which either never gets worn, or is worn just a few times. I wanted women to be able to enjoy my heels for many years and for all sorts of occasions; for them to be truly sustainable heels. This is why the shoes can be worn plain by day, and then at night they transform into a sparkling court shoe through the “shoe-lry” (jewelry for

shoes) which satisfyingly click on to the shoes. The shoes are made of premium leather to enable them to be worn in all weather conditions (except snow and ice!); come rain or shine they will be glossy and comfortable. This also means that instead of buying a new pair of shoes for a special occasion, a more environmentally friendly option of shoe-lry will work just as well. I firmly believe in buying less and buying better. It’s been very hard work developing the heels but it’s also been the happiest work I have ever done. These are good deed shoes. Good for the feet, good for the head and good for the heart. What materials do you most like to work with? High quality calfskin, lambskin and patent leathers in general. I love materials with a gentle pearlescent shine which help the women who are wearing them to shine. Soft, supple and buttery leathers have always been my favorite. How does your geographical location influence your aesthetic? Oh, massively, geography and travel has such an important role in sparking the imagination. I’ve recently been on a business trip to Kuwait and have been inspired by intricate gem work, arabesque

designs and fine gold details. I’ll be using some of this aesthetic in future collections. I’ve grown up in the United Kingdom and many of my designs come from classic English aesthetics. For example, one of my shoe designs is based on the English rose and is called, “Time to Bloom.” Geography, imagination and design are integral to each other. What’s been your greatest professional achievement to date?

THESE ARE GOOD DEED SHOES. GOOD FOR THE FEET, GOOD FOR THE HEAD AND GOOD FOR THE HEART.

The sales from my shoes this year have already helped 500 women and girls living in poverty to gain support in education. I’m so happy to be a small part of making the world a happier and more empowered place to be, with women at its heart. Whenever someone buys a pair of my shoes an amount of the profits directly support someone in need within 60 days through my partnership with GlobalGiving UK. What’s one thing people would never guess about you?

I’m terribly shy although I’m very good at not showing this. If you see me at a party or event please come across and talk to me. I might not seem shy at first glance but I can assure that I am! #BashfulButBrave. — 18HourHeels.com

LIGHT THE WAY TAIWANESE BRAND NOUR TELLS AN INSPIRING TALE OF LIGHT, PURITY AND THE ALLURE OF SIMPLICITY IN A COMPLICATED WORLD.

W

hile others seek to reinvent the heel, NOUR believes in purity, simplicity and geometry in footwear. The dedicated team behind this emerging brand have cultivated a design philosophy committed to providing high quality, hand-made, genuine leather shoes

and accessories, where attention to detail is paramount. NOUR, meaning “the light” in Arabic, best encapsulates this design philosophy. “The design for the first classic collection, for example,” says the designer. “Shows a completely clean surface by hiding every stitched line. It tells the story of NOUR’s identity. The

expectation through the brand and the product itself is that the user can love design, enjoy working, and be passionate about life, which is also my own personality.” Built with everyday wear in mind, NOUR produces both men’s and women’s footwear using the highest quality materials from Italian sheepskin uppers to 100% leather lining. Created in timeless, block colors these are investment pieces that are made to last. For men’s, the classic derby and oxford have had a NOUR makeover, with the entire upper being made from one piece of leather with no exposed stitching. A difficult-yet-challenging component, its one the designer feels best conveys the spirit and style of the brand which is simplicity. But while the styles themselves seem simplistic,

the concept is far deeper than meets the eye as one can see in NOUR’s Shadow collection (pictured top left). “The project of Shadow is a mixture of different cultures, it combines the layout of Western style shoes with Taiwan’s unique culture, a Shadow play,” the designer explains. “We projected thousands of hands and feet gestures on the wall and captured the contours to form the upper pattern. So, when reviewing the “Shadow” from different angles, you will find the design projects different images. It’s essential for me to have a product which can remind me of who I am and where I come from.” While still in its infancy, NOUR has achieved many of its goals since starting out but has many more on the horizon. “I wish, through this brand, I can share with others the life and design orientation I experienced in Italy,” adds the designer. “Simple dish, but requires precise cooking technique and steps to show the beauty of each ingredients.” For the team behind this brand the ultimate plan has less to do with commercial domination and more about sharing the philosophy of NOUR; “Through this product I want to help the consumer redefine their lifestyle, to rethink what a product should be, and how it should enlightenment our life.” A.R. — NOUR.com.tw

a classic re-invente

For English brand in-grid, this simple-yet-classic piece has become the cornerstone of a bright, design future. It’s a wardrobe staple for both men and women, but finding the perfect white shirt can be a frustrating process. For English brand in-grid, this simple-yetclassic piece has become the cornerstone of their company. Founders Adam Barclay and Katie Timothy are dedicated to “mastering a craft with the intention of saying as much as possible with as few components as possible.” Partners in life as well as in work. in-grid was found a little over one year ago, but the roots of the brand stretch right back to when the couple first began dating where inevitably their creative interests began to materialize. White shirts were not the initial aim, but through a process of designing and then re-designing, it became apparent that shirts were the perfect platform in which to focus their detail driven design methodology. A former ballet dancer, Katie transitioned seamlessly into fashion studying at UCA as an Atelier in womenswear. She worked at MatchesFashion.com in the buying department before meeting Adam and finding herself drawn into the design process once again. For Adam, it was graphic design—specifically an interest in Germanic and Swiss Typographic design—that laid the ground work for in-grid. Together, they began to experiment with what would happen when their two disciplines collided. After months of designing, making, thinking and again remaking, they ended up with one singular aim, to produce the finest detail driven white shirts, for women that would be made in England. The result is thoughtout design that makes you the star and these, our go-to staples. in-grid.co

well heeled hot seat ‘Tis the season to be sociable and what better way to bring the gang together than with HobNob invites? We put Tina Fitch, tech entrepreneur, sustainable farmer, ocean sports lover and Co-Founder/ CEO of HobNob in our Well Heeled Hot Seat.

we surf and skate no matter what age or profession, so when I’m home, I live in board shorts and t-shirts. I’ve spent enough time in designer dresses and heels where I can enjoy it, but prefer to unwind in bathing suits on the water whenever I can.

Flats or five inches? When I do heels, I like them high. I love the funkier designs by Yves Saint Laurent, Prada, and Isabel Marant. Their platforms are more forgiving for me nowadays, I can’t dance all night in stilettos like I used to! But I like to alternate heels with old school skate shoes I’ve had for years, like the eS accel and adidas Busenitz, technical shoes that are great for skateboarding and that you can actually wear with almost anything.

Tiny tote or enormous handbag? I often carry my laptop and an extra battery for my phone, along with various hair ties, bandaids and trinkets for my kids, so an enormous handbag is the only option! I use little pouches from Samudra to keep things organized in there.

Satin or sequins? Unfortunately, I’m not very delicate with my shoes or my clothes. I prefer edge to frills, so I need to go with leather or suede, vs satin or sequins. Overdressed or under-dressed? I’d rather be overdressed for an event than under-dressed. I’d rather show respect for my hosts by showing some effort. In general, I like doing a hi-lo mix so even if you’re casual, you can look polished. I’m from Hawaii where

What’s your fashion mantra to the masses? Do you. I don’t follow trends and that’s served me well. That means judging quality by assessing the piece itself, not just the name brand or the price tag. And selecting things that fit your body type and make you feel strong and confident, regardless of what’s “in.” Someone who looks and feels comfortable in their own skin always looks beautiful. If you were a shoe, what shoe would you be? The Gianvito Rossi Vamp in black suede. It’s sleek, timeless, and highly adaptable, with a sexy but conservative design that makes it classic with a twist.

What was the inspiration behind Shop Super Street? I wanted to create a store that mixed men’s and women’s clothes in a cool way. I love a styled mix of clothes—a Stussy sweatshirt with an Isabel Marant skirt and Rochas bag. I didn’t think any stores were offering that mix to women and I saw an opportunity in the market. What does an average day look like? Oh my god! My average day is crazy, if I’m not traveling for fashion week, I’m usually splitting my time between downtown L.A., our warehouse, and the store. There’s a lot of time spent in the car, on my phone, and on the computer. The number of text messages I receive in a day is baffling. What’s the most fun part of your job? I love doing our buy. Going to see each of our designers and hearing their story for the season is my favorite part. And then, collectively creating our story from those collections to then present to our audience is my other favorite part of the job. It’s a very creative process for me and so much of what we do is story telling through clothes. What kind of designers do you look for? I look for something that doesn’t look like anything else out there. I like designers that show me something new. I don’t really like if there are a lot of modern references to other designers. I like an original story to be told by a designer, I think that’s getting harder and harder since our lives are becoming so connected through social media. It’s hard to find originality today. Do you ever want to run away with the merchandise? Of course! But it makes me way happier to see a client buy it. People who shop at our store always say they get complimented on the things they buy from us. People getting that type of feedback makes me know I’m doing my job well. What exciting developments do you have planned for the future? I have a couple of side projects that I’m excited about. Shop Super Street is a wonderful platform for us and I have a couple designers I’m working with exclusively. We’re also developing our own in-house line. It’s going to be very small to start but it’s very exciting!

MCM MILESTONE THE ICONIC ACCESSORY BRAND CELEBRATES 40 YEARS IN STYLE.

G

erman-born luxury brand MCM celebrated its 40th Anniversary in style with a very special evening in its hometown of Munich, Germany. Founded in 1976 in the Bavarian capital’s hedonistic heyday, MCM owes its inspirational founding elements to the city—which has long combined a passion for glamour, music, fashion and travel with traditions of high quality craftsmanship, refinement, opulence and

good design. In a fitting homecoming, leading cultural and fashion luminaries including style icon Claudia Schiffer attended a glittering after hours party at the company’s flagship store in the heart of the city, Brienner Strasse 1. The exclusive reception embraced MCM’s current collection theme of Munich Epoque—with invited press, influencers and friends of the brand dressing up for an opulent and glamorous evening.

Following the cocktail reception, MCM’s Chief Visionary Officer SungJoo Kim invited friends of the brand such as Michael Michalsky (Creative Adviser at MCM) and Max von Thun (actor) among others to an intimate dinner at the world famous Munich Residenz, a stunning former royal palace of the Bavarian monarchs. The gala event, held inside one of the city’s most dazzling architectural gems, symbolized the company’s ongoing pride in its German roots, marking four successful decades of style and innovation. Originally based out of a small shop on Kurfuerstenstrasse, MCM has grown to become a truly global 21st Century brand, and is currently sold in 430 stores in 35 countries. It’s a long way from its humble beginnings, but in a nod to the Munich-based artists, musicians and jetset crowd that embraced MCM from the outset, the company continues to collaborate with leading creative talents from Germany and beyond. The anniversary year began with a limited-edition collaboration with renowned German contemporary artist Tobias Rehberger, followed by a critically-acclaimed capsule collection by British fashion designer Christopher Raeburn. Both projects reinterpreted the brand’s history of bold, aspirational design for today’s global nomads; a very fitting tribute to four decades of MCM. — MCMWorldwide.com

eloved beauty brand philosophy is giving us a “place to pause,” with the opening of their first ever concept store at Westfield Garden State Plaza Mall in Paramus, New Jersey. Designed by famed architectural and design firm AvroKO it was created to deliver a sensory experience that reflects the brand’s culture. “We call our premier concept store the ‘wellbeing beauty workshop’ because the environment invites you to mindfully engage the senses on an individual level through touch, sight, sound and scent. The lighting is warm, the seating areas are cozy, the product textures are comforting, the scents are approachable and the words displayed throughout the space are inspiring,” says philosophy.
