“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.” — Saint Augustine
hen you think of the accomplishments of history’s great explorers, it seems wrong to complain of long haul flights. What took years, now takes months. What took days, now takes hours. Their journeys were fraught with peril; dangers known and unknown and yet, their hunger for exploration never ceased. I’ve spent a large portion of my life in transit—traveling from one city to the next in search of new experiences, tales and yes, Instagram gold. Although I still complain about long haul flights, I can’t imagine ever loosing that hunger. The things you learn about life, the world and yourself are invaluable whether your travel plans go according to plan or lead you on a different direction entirely. There is nothing in this world that will teach you more— about yourself, about tolerance, about life —than travel. In this we’re traversed the globe to bring you the best in innovative style, accessory trends and more, we hope you enjoy reading it as much as we’ve enjoyed creating it. innovation WELCOME TO THE FUTURE OF FASHION. Michelle Huie, founder of VIM & VIGR compression legwear, HELPS US UP OUR SOCK GAME. Are all socks created equal? There are a ton of options out there when it comes to types of socks, even when comparing different types of compression socks! The key is research. Make sure you’re actually buying a true graduated compression sock because technically, anything tight could be classified as “compression,” but only graduated compression socks provide the health benefits that are documented in clinical studies, so not all socks in this case, offer equal health benefits. A few things to keep in mind when buying a true graduated compression socks: First, make sure the producer is actually using medical knitting machines when creating the socks. Adding extra spandex to a regular pair of socks does not provide the same health benefits, and you will notice the difference after wearing a pair of these socks for the afternoon. Second, check that there are compression levels listed. For example, VIM & VIGR has two compression levels for our legwear, 15-20 mmHg and 20-30 mmHg because different bodies require more or less assistance. If there is not a compression level clearly marked, I would question why this isn’t listed. The last item is to look that the company has listed their products with the Food and Drug Administration. What should you own in terms of the perfect sock wardrobe? Much of this depends on your own lifestyle. If you open a woman’s sock drawer, most of us will have different fabrics and type of socks depending on what we’re doing and what we’re wearing. We designed VIM & VIGR with versatility in mind. When I head to the gym, I often wear my nylon or moisture-wick nylon socks because I like a thinner sock for workouts. However, during the winter, I love wearing the wool collection because of the added warmth. We created different patterns available in four different fabrics so that our customers have styling and color options to fit their needs and preferences. A priority of mine in creating VIM & VIGR was that there was a stylish compression option for all year round use. Do sock gremlins exist? Yes! We’ve had customers ask if we could sell just a single sock because one of their socks mysteriously walked off. Before we launched the Men’s collection, we had women tell us stories of how they could never find their VIM & VIGR socks, and later they realized that their husbands were stealing them! Luckily, we now have a Men’s Collection to keep the peace at home. You never know what or who is taking your socks!
HEAVEN HAS HEELS summer 2016 | @HHHEELS
What function can socks play in our lives in terms of health and well-being? You would be amazed at how a pair of the right socks can positively impact your health. What makes VIM & VIGR special is that we play at the intersection of fashion and function, which helps more people feel comfortable wearing compression socks and reap the benefits compression has to offer (reduced leg aches and fatigue, speedier recovery after tough workouts and/or sports-related injuries like shin splints and more energized legs). In the past, compression socks were all about function; the health boosts were undeniable but because they didn’t prioritize on some of the less medically focused wishes of the consumer, the socks looked like they belonged in a hospital. This left compression as always associated with illness, injury or old age, and alienated many people. By creating a compression line that is stylish and available in a variety of fabrics, we’ve opened up the benefits to a variety of people who would have been disinterested in compression beforehand. Also, there’s something to be said when you accessorize your outfit with a killer statement sock. How did you become involved with the sock world? I never thought that I would start a compression legwear company. It all came about really from my own personal need, which is how I think many new brands begin. When I moved to Missoula, Montana from New York City, I found myself sitting for long periods of time at my new job as a pharmaceutical rep, leaving my legs achy and sore, and with new questions about my health. I mentioned my new sedentary situation and accompanying discomfort to a physical therapist and he recommended I try compression socks. But what I found was that the compression industry swayed toward either athletic gear or socks geared around medical use and was unable to find any type of compression legwear that I could seamlessly incorporate into my daily lifestyle. Thus, VIM & VIGR was born as a high-quality compression legwear line with stylish designs to be worn all day, any day. Now I think about socks so much, sometimes I feel like the woman who lives in a shoe. What are the most interesting technological advances when it comes to sock design/manufacturing? One of the most exciting things we’re seeing more of in the apparel industry is the introduction of 3-D printing. This allows you create designs and fabric combinations more immediately, which VIM & VIGR takes advantage of. We use some of the concepts of 3-D printing in the development of our designs by using the medical knitting machines that provide a circular knit, which mimics 3D printing technology. In terms of compression specifically, the medical knitting machines have become much more sophisticated over the past several years. The impressive strides in technology have allowed us to incorporate more fun and detailed designs while still achieving a graduated compression sock. We’ll have even more patterns coming out this fall, stay tuned! — VimVigr.com
online confessions BEHIND-THE-SCENES AT OUR FAVORITE ONLINE DESTINATIONS.
MEET best friends Ruta Labrence and Anda Auksmukste, FOUNDERS OF YOUR NEW FAVORITE E-COMMERCE STORE Lab No.25. What was the inspiration behind LabNo25.com? We both come from a fashion background and have always wanted to create something new for the industry. When the opportunity opened to create a carefully curated contentdriven platform, we capitalized on it. We wanted for fashionforward up-and-comers to have a destination to shop for premium emerging and established brands in an atmosphere comparable to high-end luxury retailers. What does an average day look like for you? The answer is probably true for most entrepreneurs… Every day looks different! We always start by answering emails and planning the day ahead. Usually afternoons are for meetings. Our daily tasks vary, but we’re constantly working on our website’s development; updating the site, uploading new products, and creating new content. How do you decide what to stock? Whenever we select new designers, we make sure there is a great product and brand that will add value to the customer. We also look for a great story behind the brand that helps bring the brand
to life. Before buying a garment, we do trend research and think of what trends our customers would like and actually wear. We want to make sure that the garment would actually fit into the life of our customer, and the practicality, quality and durability are important elements we consider. Do you ever want to run away with the merchandise? We absolutely want to run away with the garments! We do the purchasing ourselves, and our personal touch is incorporated. We select garments that we would wear, and the buying is a strategic process. Many times we see pieces that we fall in love with, and decide to add to the selection, even if they weren’t part of the original plan. What exciting developments do you have planned for the future? In the future, we want to work on more exclusive collaborations with designers to create capsule collections only available on our site. We already have a collaboration in the works that we’re excited to bring to LabNo25.com.

join the pack LET US INTRODUCE YOU TO THE NEXT BIG THING IN FITNESS. Former special forces operator Chris Finn has teamed up with fellow fitness expert Sebastian Morel-Ferreira to present The Pack Outdoor Gym, a series of group exercise classes that combine the best in fitness with the beauty of Manhattan’s parks. We caught up with Finn (pictured)—an Australian ex-pat—to talk workouts, exercise and the joys of transporting 800lbs of gym equipment through the busy streets of New York City. What is The Pack Outdoor Gym? The Pack Outdoor Gym is a unique and comprehensive small group fitness experience. We are changing the way that outdoor group fitness classes are seen. We combine everything you love about indoor group fitness classes—like kettle bells, weights and a variety of agility and conditioning equipment—with everything you love about the amazing parks of New York City. How did the idea come about? The idea for the pack came about when I was outside at Rockefeller Plaza on a sunny day. I noticed how everybody from the local area came out of the office to eat lunch in the sunshine. This indicated to me that just like myself, other people living in New York craved sunlight and fresh air. New Yorkers also like fitness, so I started wondering why more people were not combining the two together. I looked into some outdoor fitness classes being run at the time and even took a few and quickly realized what the problem was. Without variety, the class becomes boring very quickly and without equipment it’s difficult to achieve. There is only so much that can be done with bodyweight and park benches. What’s your fitness background? My background in fitness began when I was living in Australia and serving in the Army. I spent five years as a paratrooper before successfully completing the selection process for special forces. During the process of special forces entry I had the opportunity to learn from some of Australia’s leading fitness experts, and during this time, I found my passion for fitness. Before moving over to the United States, I began studying to become a personal trainer and group fitness instructor. I am now a qualified fitness professional in Australia and The United States, having gained my CPT from NASM. When I first arrived in the United States, I began working at Equinox where I became a Tier 3 qualified trainer. I also am a kettle bell instructor having gained my level two through StrongFirst, the kettle bell industry leaders.
HEAVEN HAS HEELS summer 2016 | @HHHEELS
What kind of fitness level is required to join The Pack Outdoor Gym sessions? The Pack is a totally customizable class. Our experience allows us to run a challenging class for anybody of any fitness level, age or gender. Whether you are a first-time client attending, or a veteran athlete you can expect a great work at from our class. We also teach a movement at the beginning of each class with the intention of enhancing the skills of our class progressing everybody towards the sexier activities (if that is their desire) in a safe and efficient manner. We’re in love with your Pack bike, how did you come up with that idea? The question for the class became how do we get gym equipment to the park? In the metropolitan area, you often cannot drive to a park—and certainly cannot park there for an extended period—which ruled out a motorized vehicle of any kind. The idea for The Pack bike came about from my memory of tricycles being used to transport heavy loads of ammunition around the military bases in Afghanistan. When I teamed up with Sebastian MorelFerreira to leverage his years of experience in the fitness industry and help turn this crazy idea into an actual business, we both agreed that if the bikes work in Afghanistan, there should be no reason they wouldn’t work to deliver gym equipment to the New York city parks. It must be pretty hard to ride, have you met a hill you can’t climb yet? Haha, yeah it is quite difficult to ride. The intention is to leave the bikes fully loaded in various parking garages around New York City as close as possible to the location of the class. I definitely do not want to have to ride 800lbs of gear too far. As for the hills, just getting out of the parking garage is hard enough. It is more a question of Route selection—try to avoid any real inclines. How can people join The Pack Outdoor Gym? People can sign up for classes through our website at ThePackOutdoor. com and by selecting their preferred location (currently Central Park in Manhattan and Gantry Plaza State Park in LIC). You can also book directly through your Mind Body account, or on our Facebook page “The Pack Outdoor Gym.” To stay up to date with our special events and community activities people can follow our Instagram @thepackoutdoor.

eye on beauty CURATED BEAUTY PRODUCTS DELIVERED TO YOUR DOOR. That’s the beauty of beyond her blush. we talk to founder Michelle Grundman about life in the FABULOUS lane.
What was the inspiration behind Beyond Her Blush? I love the element of surprise. Getting a surprise box every month is exciting and something to look forward to. Ever since I was little, I was always a fan of the “fruit of the month club”, etc. Beauty and fashion have always been my passion. I was excited to try the beauty boxes on the market but when I did, I wasn’t sure how to use some of the products. In addition, I didn’t necessarily have all the products needed to get the “look.” That’s when I new there was a void to be filled. What makes Beyond Her Blush so unique? Instead of creating another box, I offer a beauty kit that gives you stepby-step instructions on how to use the products (while still maintaining the element of surprise!). It’s also curated by celebrity artists, so you are getting looks that are on-trend by the ultimate professionals who specialize in a particular category.
What’s your personal beauty philosophy? It’s all about confidence. You just need a dab of lipstick or smokey shadow that instantly enhances your look and the way you feel! That’s exactly where the name “Beyond her Blush” came from. We want our customers to feel beautiful and exert confidence. Go beyond the blush, feel beautiful because you are. What’s your biggest beauty pet peeve? Noticeable foundation that stops at the jawline. I want to stop every person I see and let them know that haven’t blended their makeup all the way. What exciting plans do you have in the works for 2016? We’ve partnered with some incredible high-end designers, stylists and makeup artists to curate boxes as well as having up-and-coming brands participate in different boxes. I’m very excited to see what the rest of 2016 holds for Beyond her Blush. — BeyondHerBlush.com
