On Purpose

T

oo often perhaps, when confronted by the myriad demands of an increasingly fast-paced and technologically dependent life, I find myself challenging the situation around me, exploring the metaphorical calculus of whether or not what I might choose to do is actually necessary. What is the purpose here? How is my time best spent? Can I really afford to take this on? The same questions might be asked of schooling. What is the purpose of spending years in learning, of seeking education, of committing to an independent school such as Hebron? While the pop culture film of the summer might purport to examine ‘a dog’s purpose,’ we might also ask the same of education, to ask what is a student’s purpose? On the surface the answers are many and predictable: to earn good grades, to be named for Honor Roll or Cum Laude Society, to master calculus or a challenging piano piece, to make the hockey team or the cast of the winter musical, to amass a superior transcript and, ultimately, to win admission to that one ‘first choice’ college. Such goals are admirable, necessary and supported by Hebron’s mission to “inspire and guide each student to reach his or her highest potential in mind, body and spirit” through the discipline and rigor of academic preparation for college and for life. Such goals look inward to personal growth and development, to preparation for the future. Yet might it also be possible, even

“The purpose of our lives is to add value to the people of this generation and those that follow.” r. buckminster fuller

vital, to set goals that are outward looking, that place the development of the self in relation to all that is around us. One independent school that I admire has for its motto the Latin phrase, non sibi sed aliis, “not for self but for others.” Might purpose be expressed through service as well as knowledge? In his book Legacy, James Kerr quotes R. Buckminster Fuller, “What is my job on the planet? What is it that needs doing that I know something about, that probably won’t happen unless I take responsibility for it?” When the blinders of preparing for future outcomes are firmly in place, it is hard for any person to truly look about to see what might be done, to seek the idea that could make a difference to others, to seize upon the opportunity to leverage a moment for change. Education is such a lever and through learning to inspire change in others, we may move our community and society forward. In short, learning is not necessarily for self-improvement but for all-improvement.

Such an idea may be inspiring but is not so easily defined within the courses of a college preparatory curriculum. ‘Community Service’ has become a common additional program in schools, both public and independent, and students are often required to amass a requisite number of volunteer hours before graduation. At present, Hebron does not have such a requirement, in part because we feel that the desire to serve is not a value to be quantified and incentivized but a belief which must be an intrinsic part of the shared experience of our school community. The Hebron community comes together to foster and support many good works, often because Buckminster Fuller’s idea of doing something nobody else is doing takes hold with a student or a group. Members of the Chinese Club share language and culture with the community because it matters to them. students guide their middle school counterparts in first experiments. The Giving Tree in the Reading Room at holiday time becomes covered with gifts and pledges for area children because advisor groups bring forward their own sense of sharing. Students and faculty turned out on a November Sunday afternoon to spread hundreds of bales of mulch hay on newly constructed cross country ski trails because it was so easily a task that many hands could accomplish in a short time that a few could not. The same principle holds with the Girls’ Field Hockey and Lacrosse Teams who regularly turn out to assist the McLaughlin Garden in South Paris with seasonal chores. And the whole school spreads out over the Oxford Hills each fall to offer ‘a day of service,’ including an effort this year with Head of School Dan Marchetti’s enthusiasm, to clear brush and reopen for backcountry skiing the slopes on Little Singepole, dormant now for more than thirty years. Alex Godomsky, who directs Hebron’s LIFE (‘Living In a Family Environment’) Program, speaks of the service component of the school this way: “When I first started at Hebron, Dr. Davidson challenged the whole school community to leave their place better than

2 •

hebron • FALL 2017

when they arrived. At the time, the direct reference was about environment and the campus, but for me the meaning goes far beyond simply picking up trash at the end of a soccer game. It’s about all that we leave to make things better—in the classroom, athletics and dormitories, through the friendships of classmates and colleagues, and through building together our culture and community. If we each think about leaving everything a little better than when we arrived, Hebron will continue to be a place of growth, discovery, and understanding of where we live and why it matters. Service simply strengthens all we believe in at Hebron and unifies us in mind, body, and spirit.” As Hebron graduates go out from the Academy into the world, we learn of many who continue to share their talents to make a real difference in the larger communities they serve. This issue of HEBRON is dedicated to ‘those who serve,’ to the many who are making a difference in their communities. We celebrate the service and philanthropy in the Report of Giving of those who have supported the Academy this year and who have helped to complete the Endowment Match Campaign. We note as well, those stewards of community who have received the

Jay L. Woolsey Distinguished Service Award, including this year’s recipient, Cyrus G. Hagge, Class of 1971, who inspired the Class of 2017 when he gave the keynote talk at this year’s Robert J. Ryan ‘77 Career Connection Seminars. At the Cum Laude Induction in May, Matt Siracusa, Class of 2009, shared the story of his entrepreneurial venture, WeWool, which has distinguished itself by a pledge to provide socks for the homeless as integral to its mission and business model. Further afield, we check in with recent graduates of our Service Academies and also celebrate graduating seniors Rivers Hinson and Ryan Sullivan, Class of 2017, who received their West Point appointments before the school community at Baccalaureate. As Hebron’s archivist, I am humbled to preserve the record of so many who have served the school and world, inspired perhaps or influenced by the role models they encountered here at Hebron or the particular experiences they had which gradually influenced their lives afterward. Service does become integral to Hebron’s program and purpose, and ideally, a joyful part of that experience. In the Hebron spirit, Dave Stonebraker, Guest Editor

ost are familiar with the façade of the Deacon William Barrows House which has faced the Hebron Station Road for more than two centuries. As a part of recent campus projects, the house has had its brickwork repointed, its trim painted and its chimneys repaired and recapped. The familiar façade appears as trim and stately as ever. At the same time, the back or western side of the Barrows House has received a ‘face lift’ as well. Current summer landscaping work has restored the gentle slopes between Barrows House and Andrews Field.

Underbrush and small trees have been cut back and chipped, and the remaining towering oaks, hundred year specimens, now present a parklike aspect and bring Atwood Hall, the Barrows House and the Lepage Center for the Arts into the scene with the Bowl. Several images from the Bell-Lipman Archives show Barrows House with this open aspect a century ago, before the construction of Sargent Memorial Gymnasium, when ‘Old Brick’ and other buildings along the Hebron Station Road overlooked the Andrews Field.

Hebron’s first track, a cinder straightaway for dashes was created along the eastern edge of the bowl circa 1915.

Barrows House, with additions, as well as buildings along the Hebron Station Road, is visible in this circa 1925 image of the Hebron Academy Band marching on Andrews Field before a football game.

“Got Moxie?” Fall Champions

T

here is a certain caché about Moxie, the Maine beverage which is not exactly a contender in the soda wars, but which continues to have a local following some hundred years after its first sales in 1876. Acclaimed by some as a universal medicine, it is hardly the sweet and bubbly fare sought by most. However, Moxie has long been associated with Maine through its marketing and association with a vigorous Maine lifestyle, and it has become a coined word for courage, daring or spirit. To have ‘moxie’ is akin to having ‘grit’ and a high compliment to those who ‘show their moxie’ in any difficult or challenging situation. Thus, it was wholly appropriate that the Maine Independent School Athletic Directors created The Moxie Cup in 2012-2013 athletic year as a way to celebrate among the member schools overall ‘success’ in a particular year. The components of ‘success’ as considered by the MAISAD Athletic Directors include league championships, certainly, but also individual successes, the accomplishments of JV and thirds squads as well as the spirit and sportsmanship of each of the school’s teams. Hebron first won the Moxie Cup in the spring of 2014, claiming it from the inaugural winner, Kents Hill School. The cup returned to Hebron this year in recognition of an especially successful athletic year. Highlights included the paired championships of the girls’ and boys’ soccer teams in the fall, the matching championships by the Academy lacrosse and tennis teams in the spring as well as both individual singles tennis champions, Tounarouze El Yazidi and Freddie Hohmann. However, equally important to the standings were the contributions of the many JV teams who showed their ‘moxie’ by coming together to learn the skills and teamwork that resulted in championships.

Dr. Swenton charged this year’s students to use knowledge collaboratively, to find ways to share and leverage learning for change. Matt spoke of the influence of Hebron. “I came as an athlete,” he remembered, “but I came to understand that my learning and the friendships that I made were more influential.” After graduating from Becker College, Matt has launched a business, WeWool, which makes specialized socks. But what is impressive about the fledgling business is that for every pair of WeWool sold, Matt donates another pair to shelters serving the homeless. The gesture represents one tangible way to make a difference for a person’s comfort, one pair at a time.

Distinguished Service Award at 34

T

he Academy’s Distinguished Service Award, now in its thirty-fourth year, honors a person whose contributions to Hebron and/or society are felt to be exemplary. Thirty-three individuals have been honored with the award, which has been given in all but three years since 1984. The first award was presented to Albert L. Maguire, Class of 1936, honoring his “time and energy spent in devotion to the best interest of the Academy, his years of service to the Class of 1936 as its agent, his diligence as Chairman of the Academy’s 175th anniversary celebration.” After this first award, early Distinguished Service Awards were made in the form of a proclamation signed by the Trustees of the Academy. In 1987, the citation for Stephen W. Lane, Class of 1962, read in part: AND WHEREAS, he has been honored by Governor Ariyoshi of Hawaii for his work on behalf of immigrants and refugees from Southeast Asia, AND WHEREAS, he has shown total dedication over many years to effect the release and freedom of refugees from Cambodia, Thailand, and throughout the area, These words were offered in 1998 to capture the understated and unfailing spirit of Edward D. “Ted” Noyes, Class of 1958: AND WHEREAS, he has demonstrated—by countless self-effacing acts of kindness and consideration, courtesy and integrity, humility and modesty—an absolute generosity of spirit realized in his impact upon the life of this school; Beverly Leyden received the award in 2001, and her citation brought another facet of service

10 •

hebron • FALL 2017

to the Hebron community in these words: AND WHEREAS, she has fostered a fine spirit of community both locally and globally by her membership in the World Affairs Council, her direction of Hebron’s International Student Program and her special work with Hebron’s exchanges to Tomsk, Siberia; by her role as deacon of the Hebron Community Baptist Church; and by her leadership of Hebron’s town government as selectwoman. In 2006, the award was renamed in honor of Jay L. Woolsey, and recently has been accompanied by more extensive remarks by the presenter. In 2007, John King began his remarks for recipient Shell Evans, Class of 1962, with a quotation from Albert Schweitzer, “You must give some time to your fellow men. Even if it’s a little thing, do something for others—something for which you get no pay other than the privilege of doing it,” and then applied the percept to Shell’s many contributions to the school and society. Perhaps at the heart of it all and the reason that Hebron continues to honor its own through The Distinguished Service Award comes from the language of the citation for Jay L. Wooley in 1996: WHEREAS, he personifies all that is good about Hebron Academy and his devotion to the Academy is a model, he is always eager to help, no matter what the need or depth of the challenge at hand, and WHEREAS, he has been an educator in the purest sense, never losing an opportunity to share knowledge or otherwise challenge the mind—in the classroom, on the fields, or on the more natural playgrounds he adores and willingly and routinely shares with others. Giving of the self and teaching do indeed become the levers that move communities and the world. Cyrus Hagge, Class of 1971, became the 33rd recipient of the Distinguished Service Award in 2017, the latest of those who through their spirit, vision and life work have enriched their communities, both local and global.

2016 Distinguished Service Award Recipient Cyrus Hagge ’71 One of Portland, Maine’s most civically and culturally active citizens, Cyrus Hagge has served on numerous boards including Space Gallery; the Portland Downtown District; an outdoor education program for children and teens called Rippleffect; the Portland Rotary Club; Casco Bay Lines; Portland’s Planning Board, as well as its Waterfront Development and Master Planning Committees; the Cumberland County YMCA; the University of Southern Maine Foundation; the West End Neighborhood Association, Maine College of Art, the Portland Museum of Art and the Chebeague-Cousins Transportation Resolution Team. Cyrus lives on Munjoy Hill in Portland with his wife Patty, and they have three grown children. He and his wife are devoted to The Telling Room, a nonprofit working to give children and teens the voice to tell their own stories. Cyrus’ efforts in the community show a serious personal investment in the city of Portland’s future. Widely known to be a successful fundraiser, Cyrus is a welcome addition to boards, a man whose vision can radically transform a struggling operation. At Hebron, he represents a strong family history of supporting the Academy through the Hagge Family Foundation. In addition to being instrumental in meeting our first Foundation Challenge, Cyrus has been very generous with his time. For several years he has spent the day with students at our Career Connection Seminars held each spring for members of the senior class. We appreciate all that Cyrus has done for Hebron and for the greater community of Portland.

“Simply put, the community scholarship changed my life. The mentorship and support I experienced while at Hebron Academy laid the foundation on which I have built a fulfilling career in medicine. Relationships that were forged with faculty during this period provided me with a precocity that carried me gracefully into my academic career. My parents sacrificed for me to attend Hebron. Without the Community Scholarship, Hebron Academy would have been, frankly, unattainable. It can be intimidating for a student to be aware of the fact that every minute on campus is a gift grounded in the generosity of others. However, it has made my achievements that much more sweet. At each trying moment when I could have given up, I considered those who were sponsoring my future, kept my head down and persevered. Gratitude has been permanently woven into the warp of my academic endeavors. Hebron’s commitment to my education fueled my journey toward wisdom and truth. It also set a philanthropic example I hope to emulate in my life.” molly curtis, ’06

I remember at Closing Convocation, I was called with another student to be that year’s recipient of a Community Scholarship. When I got back to my dorm I sat down and read the letter I received. It talked about Mrs. Stonebraker, who had been a librarian at Hebron Academy for more than twenty years. It described how she had a goal at Hebron not only to educate but also to shape the Hebron community. I felt extremely honored that I was chosen by the faculty to be one of the students who represented her goals, and I went into my senior year wanting to continue her idea of making Hebron Academy a family for all. It wasn’t until I graduated and drove past Lepage for the last time that I really realized all I was leaving. I know that I gained much more than a good education and a great sports experience here at Hebron. I gained a second family. Receiving the Community Scholarship means so much to me to this day. I think everyone here at Hebron knows that our community is the heartbeat of the Academy. andrew kluge, ’15

Hebron Receives $1 Million Lead Gift to Name Kaneb Center for Science and Engineering

A

$1,000,000 lead gift was recently received from Jill and Paul Kaneb ’60 to name the Kaneb Center for Science and Engineering. The Kaneb Center will house two classrooms, expanded lab space, and a shared lab prep space. The lobby, lit from above by clerestory windows will provide ample space for students to gather before and after class. Hebron plans to break ground in the spring of 2018. One of the design intents is to use the building itself as a teaching tool. The building will be sustainably designed with super insulated walls and roof along with an efficient heat pump system and photovoltaic (PV) panels on the south facing roof slope. The roof structure, ductwork, and system components will be exposed. A large flat panel screen outside the mechanical room displays energy creation and consumption, allowing the students to monitor the building’s efficiency. Clad in a metal skin, with boxed-out oversize windows and PV panels on the roof, the building looks modern – a place where forward thinking discoveries can be made. The modular structural wall panels are also cost effective and can reduce construction time. On the interior, high windows on the

east and west ends of the building let in more natural light without reducing the amount of wall space. The site for the Kaneb Center was chosen because of the physical proximity to the current Treat Science Building and to Sturtevant School Building. Removing a current parking lot and building the new building there, creates green space and an outdoor courtyard, or academic commons, in the area between the three buildings. This is ideal for student travel and will add a new and desirable element to the feel of the grounds. The building will be visible from Route 119 and while the design of the exterior is not brick, it will compliment the existing buildings thoughtfully. The Kaneb Center for Science and Engineering will create new academic opportunities for Hebron students in an ever increasingly important area of study. The total project budget of $2,000,000 also includes $250,000 for renovations to the lab spaces in the adjacent Treat Science Building. My Long and Winding Journey Back To Hebron Bob Waite ‘68

I

recently posted on Facebook that I was returning to Hebron. Almost instantly a friend, Kevin, whom I had met at the University of Wisconsin, posted: “What! I thought you hated that place!” Hate is an ugly word, Kevin. Let’s just say Hebron and I at one point did not exactly see eye-to-eye. My Hebron experience took place in the mid- to late- ‘60’s. To paraphrase a Nobel Prize winner, the times they were a changing...but at Hebron, not so much. Fueled by exposure to another poet and singer-songwriter, mid-way through my senior year I determined I should run away to Montreal, Canada, to become the next Leonard Cohen. Armed with a cheap portable typewriter, $800 drawn from my own savings, I made my way by bus and train first to Boston and then on to the land of poutine and ice hockey. It took me less than three weeks to discover that Montreal was happy with the Leonard Cohen they already had and did not need another. I returned to Hebron briefly, at my Dad’s urging, but my heart – and mind – weren’t in it. So I left. In retrospect, I wish I could embellish this by saying I was “thrown out.” But I wasn’t – I just packed it in, the academic equivalent of boxer Roberto Duran’s “no mas.” The most terrifying experience was a final meeting – what we today would call an “exit interview” - with Head of School Claude L. Allen. It is difficult to convey how formidable, intimidating and even volatile Claude could be – but on this occasion he was subdued and philosophical. “You’re leaving Hebron, but I hope there are things you are taking from Hebron that will never leave you,” he finally said in the end. My classmates snuck my picture into the yearbook (facing off with an image of my boyhood hero, Benjamin Franklin) and they invited me to the Class of ’68 graduation after-party. I didn’t forget Hebron, but it quickly receded into the background. Thanks to some high SAT and AP scores, the University of Chattanooga bravely offered me a freshman scholarship contingent on working on the school newspaper and in the cafeteria. From there it was on to Wisconsin to study history and several summers working as a reporter/

14 •

hebron • FALL 2017

editor for Massachusetts newspapers. More years went by and then, out of the blue, someone at the school – perhaps Jay Woolsey or Ned Willard, I can’t recall – asked if I would write a piece for the Hebron alumni magazine. It turned out that Hebron was contemplating going co-ed and was looking for someone to argue that change would be a good thing. “Now THIS is an interesting development,” I thought to myself. So I wrote the piece. My life progressed from journalism to politics to the corporate world. By now it was 1992. I was (somewhat ironically) in Canada – Toronto, not Montreal – heading up communications for IBM. Again, out of the blue, I was contacted by Hebron. “We’d like you to consider joining the Board of Trustees.” You could have knocked me over with a metaphor. “I can think of a dozen people, who would be more qualified,” I countered. The Board Chair didn’t disagree – but persevered. I agreed to join, knowing full well that it would entail not just time, but treasure. Trustees are expected to pony up what dollars they can to help the school function effectively and to build up a sustainable endowment. Why would someone who walked away from a school in frustration, return of his own free will? What drew me back? First, there was the academic foundation I had received at Hebron. If I looked objectively at whatever modest career success I’d achieved, it is largely attributable to the core skills of writing effectively and assembling information coherently. There is no question that I had drawn deeply on what I learned in Hebron classrooms, in my case English and history classrooms. History teachers Edward Scheibler and John Morris and English teacher Richard Stratton, in particular, were formative and inspirational. Stratton, in addition to being a great teacher, once saved me from being thrown out of school. This happened a year before I ultimately left. I had written a short story for the literary magazine, one that Claude (in one of those volatile moments), had deemed both obscene and cause for expulsion. Mr. Stratton leapt to my defense, deftly distributing the

story to several prep school English department heads and rallying enough support from them to make the expulsion threat fade quietly away. Secondly, while at Hebron I was exposed to a diverse peer group. I came from Ipswich, Massachusetts, a town that in the 1950’s and 1960’s was white bread America. There were no African-Americans; perhaps two (nonobservant) Jewish families; and one lone Asian (Mine Sawahara Crane, wife of the plumbing magnate). At Hebron I had an opportunity to room with an African-American classmate; I became friends with any number of Jewish classmates and a classmate of Chinese-Caucasian background (which ended up foreshadowing my own children’s experience in terms of having mixed JapaneseCaucasian heritage). On Hebron’s playing fields and in its classrooms, I was fortunate enough to share the experience with people with diverse backgrounds I would never have encountered had I stayed in Ipswich. Many of these friendships endure to this day. Today Hebron is far more international – a different kind of diversity, but no less important. I stepped off the board in 2004. The highlight for me during that period was the selection of John King as Head of School He was absolutely the right person at the right time. Over the years I resisted several invitations to rejoin the board. I had two children heading off to university and time and treasure were both in short supply. But by 2015 I was lured back – for all of the reasons previously stated. What I found was a school with markedly increased confidence and a board chair, Paul Goodoff, absolutely committed to taking Hebron to a higher level. Proof of that came this past year with the selection of a new head to succeed retiring John King. In Dan Marchetti, the school once again found the right person at the right time. Claude was correct – there are things we all take from Hebron that never leave us. There are also things that any of us can do even those who didn’t formally get handed a parchment - to help make the school better. Reconnect, in whatever way works best for you.

Last Voyage of the Hornet,

clipper ship tale with a Hebron connection. . .

K

ristin Krause, biology professor and Bates College alumna, has published a new book with a particular Hebron connection. The book, Last Voyage of the Hornet, published by the Royal Fireworks Press, recounts the tragic and dramatic story of the clipper ship Hornet which sank enroute ‘around Cape Horn’ in 1866. As a boy, the Captain of the Hornet, Josiah Mitchell, attended Hebron Academy in the 1820’s, and after leaving the school ran away to sea. By the age of 21 he had worked his way up to captain. Mitchell achieved international fame when his clipper ship, the Hornet, burned at sea in 1866. A routine voyage from New York to San Francisco took a bad turn when the first mate accidentally set the ship on fire in the equatorial Pacific. Thirty-one men fled in three small boats. They found themselves becalmed in the doldrums, more than a thousand miles from land, with little food or

water. Inaccurate charts and leaky vessels made matters worse. As supplies dwindled, the crew became increasing desperate. Extreme hunger and thirst led to talk of mutiny, murder, and cannibalism. Though a humble man, the captain mastered his younger and more numerous crew through ability and strength of character. After forty-three days, both food and water were gone. Reluctantly, the crew prepared to draw lots to see who would be eaten. Just in time, they sighted Hawaii. They had come 4300 miles, a feat unequalled in maritime history. Through it all, Mitchell and two passengers kept daily diaries. Newspaper reporter Samuel Clemens was in Hawaii when Hornet’s crew came ashore in the village of Laupahoehoe. Clemens interviewed the crew, and his story was telegraphed across the country and around the world, launching his career as Mark Twain. Details of Josiah Mitchell’s life and adventures can be found in Kristin Krause’s new book, Last Voyage of the Hornet. Krause grew up in Connecticut and learned to sail when she was eleven years old. She has crewed on tall ships in New England and the Canadian Maritimes. Krause now lives in Freeport, Captain Mitchell’s home town. Krause, Kristin. Last Voyage of the Hornet. AT THE ACADEMY

A Message of Profound Thanks from a Grateful Board

2017

marked the completion of term for five members of Hebron’s Board of Trustees, all of whom contributed in significant ways to the progress of the Academy and deserve our heartfelt thanks. Jim Clements, former Head of School at Tilton, joined the Board in 2013 and brought first-hand insight, experience and wisdom to virtually every aspect of our work. Most notably, he served as an inspiring Chair of our Admissions & Marketing Committee, helping our able staff to focus and strengthen Hebron’s outreach. No matter what the topic, we could count on Jim for judgment and good sense, and will miss his thoughtful voice. Bob Donahue ’83, a municipal bond analyst when he joined the Board in 2013 who has since shifted to a career as an educator, brought a depth of understanding and experience in finance, and was a steadfast and helpful proponent of prudent planning and operations. We’re grateful for his time and service. Tom Hull ’64, a distinguished diplomat and educator, joined the Board in 2009, and in his tenure touched just about every aspect of the school and the Board in wonderfully helpful ways. His work in developing policies for succession provided clear guidance and a roadmap for what was a very thoughtful and effective process in the recent Head of School search and transition. We couldn’t have asked for more, and in every way, he was deserving of Hebron’s highest alumni recognition, the Distinguished Service Award, presented to him at Homecoming in 2015. Jud Sommer, father of Danny ’08, joined the Board immediately following his son’s graduation, and has served in just about every possible role on the Board during his tenure. With a background in the law and in public affairs, he has been a trusted advisor and an invaluable resource to Hebron in countless ways. His leadership of the Development Committee shaped the several highly successful campaigns in recent years, and for the last three years he served as Vice Chair of the Board, Co-Chairing the Head of School

Search Committee. We will miss his extraordinary wisdom, his ever-present wit, and his common sense approach to every-day problems. Scott Wilson ’71, a retired investment banker who turned to teaching in independent schools as a second career, has served on the Board since 2004. His knowledgeable and thoughtful voice influenced virtually every discussion we’ve had as a Board. As Treasurer for much of his tenure, he steered the school, with discipline but an uncommon and helpful sense of what was appropriate in the circumstances, through the tough times following the 2008 economic meltdown, and with a light but sure touch on the tiller of school finances, has put the Academy on solid footing. How grateful we are for his exceptional service. While we’re thanking those five individuals for all they’ve done for Hebron, it gives me great pleasure to welcome our newest addition to the Board. Brett Mitchell ’02 has worked as a consultant and private equity principal since graduating from MIT and the Kellogg School, and recently opened his own direct investment firm in Boston. He’s following in his father’s footsteps as a Hebron Trustee (Wylie served from 2001-2005). Brett and his wife joined us at our strategic planning session in June, and we look forward to what we know will be most helpful and thoughtful participation in the work of the Board in the years to come. coming to Hebron as a true trip to the wilderness. He recalls loving the beautiful campus and the natural surroundings, which were so foreign to him when compared to his city life. A trip to climb Kathadin, a tradition that continues today, was particularly memorable, formative and representative of the type of experiences he had at Hebron that spurred a lifelong love of the outdoors, travel and running. Dave’s earliest connections to Hebron came though his uncle, Barney Williams, who served Hebron with distinction as Claude Allen’s right hand man and taught English from 1946 to 1959. His brother Bill ’58 also attended the Academy. With the modesty that Dan has come to know is typical for Dave, he describes himself as having been an average student at Hebron. However, his personal approach has led him

to believe that you should know what you are good at and latch onto it early, and that you must absolutely love what you do. After Hebron, Dave attended Yale University, then Harvard Business School before launching a successful career in banking. Dave describes himself as being a late bloomer in supporting Hebron financially. It was his experience on the Board of Trustees, starting in 2013, that helped him realize how impactful his giving could be to the students and teachers of today and tomorrow at Hebron. “Leadership gifts to Hebron can really move the needle,” he says. “At schools with a billion dollar endowment, it is hard to feel that you are being truly impactful. That’s why I love supporting Hebron!” Thank you Dave for your tireless support and leadership and setting an example through your dedicated philanthropy.

Thank you, Dave Williams

H

ead of School Dan Marchetti writes that it has been a pleasure getting to know Dave Williams over the past year and a half as both a member of the Board of Trustees finishing his final year and in his continued role as Chair of our Investment Committee. Dave has served Hebron with great distinction as a proud alum, class agent, committee chair, board member, and as a member of the search committee for our most recent Head of School Search. Dave has also been an incredibly supportive leadership donor to Hebron, providing the single largest non-foundation gift to our recent successful $10 million dollar endowment campaign. Dave graduated from Hebron in 1960 and credits Hebron with helping him to reach his full potential in life. Dave grew up in New York City and described

Rink Improvements

ubstantial improvements and upgrades to Robinson Arena are currently underway which will reduce the facility’s operating cost by as much as 35% thanks to a generous gift from John McGonagle ’61. John’s gift will fund three major improvements: new state of the art boards and glass, a newly installed insulated ceiling, and a dehumidification system. These upgrades will provide aesthetic and functional improvements for student athletes and fans. The most significant aspect of the upgrades is having the ice ready and the rink open earlier in the school year so that our hockey players may

better prepare for the upcoming season. Players and fans alike look forward to many celebrations at Robinson Arena this season! After graduating from Hebron, John attended Colgate University. He is a former Marine pilot, former owner of Seacoast Harley-Davidson in New Hampshire, and founder of New England Police Vehicle Leasing Corporation. It is through John’s prior generosity that we have the superb competition soccer and lacrosse fields named in honor of former Headmaster Claude Allen. Thank you John for all that you do for Hebron.

class of 1999 Most of my philanthropic donations in the past have been to my alma mater, West Point. Last year my wife, Annette, suggested that it would make much more of an impact if I would divert a major chunk to Hebron. After all, West Point has been racking up major bucks from all over the country. They will never notice. If Hebron was on the receiving end, they would notice.

Hebron agreed with this logic. After discussion with the Advancement Office, we agreed to coordinate a gift to Hebron with a West Point program sponsoring qualified candidates at a select prep school such as Hebron Academy. We now have an endowed scholarship at Hebron and West Point receives a terrific kid the next year.

endowment match campaign Hebron Completes Endowment Match Campaign 50th Reunions represent an opportunity to leave a unique legacy to a place once considered “home.” Approaching his own 50th reunion, Shell Evans ’62 presented Hebron with a challenge to increase endowment, and it was met by unprecedented commitments from every member of our Board, even as many were still completing earlier pledges. With $5 million in commitments, an anonymous foundation which has supported Hebron in exceedingly helpful ways over the last three decades, put a further challenge to us, offering to match added endowment gifts one-to-one up to $2.5 million. The Lunder Foundation, formed by Paula and Peter Lunder ’52, then presented the school with a very

important, creative and catalytic gift commitment, a match within the foundation’s match, effectively allowing us to offer a three-to-one match on new gifts from others. This incentive was immensely helpful in getting people to really stretch to make a number of substantial gifts. In April, twenty months ahead of the foundation’s deadline and thanks to the generosity of sixty-three donors, Hebron earned the full amount of all the offered matches. When all pledges have been fulfilled, Hebron’s endowment will have received a $10 million boost from this effort, bringing the school’s endowment to more than $30 million dollars. The Endowment Match represents an extraordinary gift to all Hebron students, and we are most grateful to everyone who played a part in the success of the campaign. Thank you!

Richard M. Cutter A lot of travel since this time last year-three weeks in Thailand visiting my son Peter. Late in August we left for two weeks in Italy and it was a great trip. My third visit but much time in the 60’s with the US Navy. Still going to Southport, ME in the summer.

James C. Harberson It was 60 years ago (1956) that Hebron fielded its first soccer team under Coach Evan West. I played right full back-or what that position was called then and 60 years ago the great hockey team went undefeated! Great Memories! My wife Maggie has been a nurse for 50 years.

1955 Samuel A. Dibbins Continuing to work and staying active. The great Northwest continues to offer many wonderful ways to do that. Hebron’s future looks so bright and the spring magazine reflects the spirit. If I can reach my next reunion, I’ll be there!

Charlie Cummings ’07 and Tom Cummings ’11

F

or as long as he can remember, Charlie Cummings ’07 dreamed of flying planes for the US Navy. For the past four years, that dream has been a reality. Charlie attended W.P.I. on a Navy ROTC scholarship. Though he studied Mechanical Engineering at W.P.I., he was a midshipman in the Holy Cross Navy ROTC battalion across town. Following graduation, Charlie was assigned to the Naval Air Station at Pensacola where he trained as a Naval Aviator in the F-18 Superhornet. (Charlie and his pilot dipped the wings of their powerful jet to the Hebron students when they roared over the Dwyer Fields in the spring of 2016.) In March 2015, Charlie’s squadron, the Red Rippers VFA-11, was deployed to the Persian Gulf aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt CVN 71.

Lieutenant Charles Cummings

Tom Cummings ‘11 followed in his brother’s footsteps and joined the Navy ROTC battalion at Holy Cross in the fall of 2011. After graduating with a degree in Chemistry from Holy Cross in 2015, Tom joined the USS Higgins DDG 76 out of San Diego and within a month was underway to the Persian Gulf. In the Gulf, Tom’s ship, the Higgins, was the guard ship for Charlie’s aircraft carrier. Charlie could look over the deck of the carrier and see his brother’s ship down below; aboard the Higgins, Tom could listen to the radio chatter and know when to watch for Charlie’s air wing. In the Persian Gulf, the crew of the Higgins was involved in a dramatic at-sea rescue. The Navy ship spotted a burning fishing vessel and hastened to give aid. When they arrived at the scene, the fishing boat was engulfed in flames and the crew was in the water, clinging to debris. Using rigid-hull inflatable boats, the Higgins crew rescued the crew from the waters of the Arabian Sea and brought them aboard the Higgins where they received medical aid, food, and water. One of the Higgins crew remarked, “This was a terrific demonstration of the Navy’s ability to render assistance to those in need. It gave me a deep sense of accomplishment knowing I could help [others] while being deployed.” In November 2016, Tom was invited to be a member of the crew of the USS Sampson when it traveled to New Zealand to take part in

Tom (2nd from right) with his crewmates aboard the USS Higgins when they were promoted to Lieutenant-JG’s. the 75th anniversary celebration of the Royal New Zealand Navy. This marked the first time in more than 25 years that a US Navy ship was invited into New Zealand waters. Before the celebration could begin, the Sampson was diverted to New Zealand’s South Island to help with relief following a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake. Many members of the Sampson’s crew flew ashore in helicopters to lend a hand to the locals. Lieutenant Charlie Cummings is

currently the Weapons Systems Officer for the Red Rippers squadron based in Virginia Beach. In November 2017, he and his wife, Kaylyn, will move to Corpus Christi, Texas where Charlie will return to flight school and move to the front seat when he begins training as a pilot. Lieutenant JG Tom Cummings is currently stationed in San Diego where he is the Electrical Officer aboard the USS Higgins.

hen I graduated from Hebron in 2012, I went straight to the Naval Academy as a ‘direct,’ which means a midshipman straight from high school. I majored in Systems and Weapons Engineering, and for four years I played on the women’s ice hockey team, becoming captain in my final year. Engineering/school was a great highlight of my time, but noth-

ing was more rewarding than playing on the hockey team and representing something greater than myself, the Navy, in a sport I loved so much. I believe in service as a professional motivation. Whether that service is rooted in the military, community, or otherwise, it is all worthwhile and satisfying. Choosing the Navy as my outlet for service has a personal context as my dad served in the Navy for 21 years, and his influence on my life was a contributing factor in my decision. The path of service has been important for me. I believe that the real fun begins when you put your ego aside and prioritize service, helping others to learn, grow and develop. My favorite moments have been helping, supporting, and serving teammates. One of my closest

mentors at the Naval Academy heavily influenced my attitude on the subject when she told me, “As the leader you assume you have to be the sun. Others as sunflowers follow you across the sky and crane their necks to feel your influence, but the best leaders are good dirt. Serve and support them from the bottom up. Be the excellent soil that nourishes and is a strong foundation for others.” And I agree! Life is better as dirt. I am currently finishing up a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering at the Dublin Institute of Technology in Dublin, Ireland, as a Mitchell Scholar, a program named for Senator George Mitchell of Maine. After Ireland I will go to Pensacola, Florida for Navy Pilot training. I look forward to seven years of service to Naval Aviation.

Merrill Shea, 99, passed away on June 20, 2017. He was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Margaret Higginbotham Shea. He is survived by his five children. Merrill was born in Queens, N.Y. In 1942 he married Margaret Higginbotham and moved to New York. Merrill and Margaret moved to Maine where he continued his profession with a radio program and as Hebron’s glee club director from 1957-1962. Merrill and Margaret took their greatest pleasure in the many quiet days spent together at their home near Damariscotta Lake - and in the frequent invasions of family and friends there. Their last few years together they lived at Lincoln Home in Newcastle, where Merrill continued his musical pursuits as a soloist into his 90s! 40 •

1961 Thomas M. Curley, a proud Irishman, passed away peacefully at his home in May, 2017. He was raised by his maternal grandparents Stanley and Adria Brown. Tom’s time in prep schools and at Camp Moosehead provided camaraderie and adventure and developed an appreciation of risks and rewards which would guide his personal and professional life. Trips to Fenway Park were a summer highlight, and tumbling into the back of a pick-up with neighborhood friends to travel to Oxford Plains Speedway introduced him to stock car racing. Tom had unwavering work ethic and with his positive attitude, every experience in life provided him with a reward. Tom’s many business ventures were under his constant analyzation and reinvention. Tom was involved with several successful entrepreneurial ventures beyond his primnary work of developing and managing racetracks, including a pub in New Hampshire, steakhouse and Dixieland Jazz clubs in Vermont and Daytona Beach, Florida, a trading stamp enterprise and a marina and campground. Tom’s love of adventure and travel, reverence for tradition and heritage, compassion, honesty, and loyalty, and appreciation of hard work, allowed him to enjoy a very full and satisfying life. He was happiest on his deck in Maine, reclining in the sun, with a good Red Sox game on the radio. Tom leaves behind his partner Darla Ripley Hartt; two children and six grandchildren. Tom’s ashes will be returned to Higgins Beach in Maine where he was comforted to know he would travel with the tides, returning each day to the seawall of his home, with the occasional trip to his ancestral homeland of Ireland. 42 •

1962 George Ugarte passed away May 9th, 2017.

1963 Charles Edwin Gould, Jr. died in June, 2017, following surgery for a fractured femur. He was born in Kennebunkport, Maine, the son of Elizabeth and Charles Gould, Sr. and is survived by his two sisters. Charles graduated from Bowdoin College in 1967 and the University of Connecticut in 1968, with a Master’s Degree. UCONN was where he met Carolyn S. Skidmore. They were married in 1969. For two years, Charles taught English at Hebron and for over 35 years at Kent School. He wrote columns for Book Source Monthly, poetry and light verse for Light Quarterly. He was a member of the P.G. Wodehouse Society. Charles retired to Kennebunkport where he enjoyed his many and eclectic interests: restoring reed organs and antique furniture, working on his model railroad, indulging in his love of opera, literature and poetry. He was an interesting and gifted man. Condolence from John Kippax’70 Charlie Gould was an enormously important teacher for me at Hebron. In the fall semester the first paper that I submitted to his pen for review came back with more corrections than the paper could hold. Charlie spent two hours that afternoon explaining what it would take for me to potentially climb out of academic mediocrity. He followed our meeting with a written report crystallizing the specifics of his innumerable recommendations. Transformation was slow but he stuck with me, doggedly pointing out the many shortfalls and gradually guiding me to a more enlightened embrace. To understand Shakespeare I was tasked with reading the Bible, from beginning to end! There were many other extra reading assignments that helped fill some of the many

gaps. None of the direction was designed to be easy. Grading was unforgiving. At the beginning of the semester I was receiving the very worst of grades, but at the end, quite remarkably, some of the best. His gift was life broadening. This grand teacher will be deeply missed. How lucky was I to be under his watch during his brief Hebron tenure. Condolence from Bruce Baker ‘70 Mr. Gould and I had almost nothing in common but he cared deeply about English as a subject and about all the boys in his class. Why do we remember certain people? Because they left a mark on you. It was a simple yet powerful lesson that he taught me. You may laugh at this but hopefully you will smile. He taught me that all forms of the word get were weak. He said that there is always a better word and I should figure it out and use it. It is a truism that made me look at all of my writing differently. The quality of any piece is improved upon with the absence of “gotten” or any other use of the word get. I have followed this guideline as I received my BA in English and I have told both of my boys to always look for a better word, one that is more precise or says what you really mean. Mr. Gould taught me to care, that words matter.

1966 Bob Grossman of Jamaica Plain formerly of Brookline died on July 14, 2017. He was the beloved son of the late Marilyn (Silverston) and Maurice “Mike” Grossman; brother of Jo Anne Grossman Pearlman, Nancy Grossman, and James Grossman; and a brother-inlaw to Joy Dubin Grossman ‘82. Peter Loveland passed away on October 19, 2016. His enduring love of the ocean led him to enlist in the U.S. Navy, where he served for six years, and later led him to pursue a career in boat building. After working in a number of

occupations over the years, Peter obtained a Masters Certificate in Network Administration from Boston University. He retired after working for nearly seven years at IBM Global Technology Services. Peter is survived by his wife of 47 years, Kathleen, of Marblehead, and his son Benjamin and his wife, Caroline, and was the proud grandfather of Emma Rhys Loveland.

1967 Nelson Powers died in 2015 at Lahey Hospital following a long illness. He was born in New York City, NY and was a son of the late Edward and Olive Powers. After Hebron he earned his bachelor’s degree in finance from New York University and was a successful financial advisor for many years. He was very proud of his son Neil and enjoyed attending his sporting events.

1969 Don S. Frost died on March 11, 2017 after a courageous battle with leukemia. He was always quick to mention his hometown of Caribou, ME, where he grew up with his parents Royal Henry and Elizabeth Frost, his sister Jane and brother, Jeff. He worked to improve the well being of others in the social work and healthcare fields. For 38 years, he kept his beloved wife Alison Magee laughing. Always a great Dad and coach, his children Emily and Alex and son-in-law Nick loved being together-from skiing to tennis to concerts to trips-and adored his frequent calls and always sunny outlook. Don’s favorite times were chatting on the porch at Salter’s Point, spending time with good friends and family, listening to music, talking Boston sports and goofing with his grandson Henry, the light of his life. Don was guided by his faith in God. His wife Allison writes: Don always spoke fondly of his years at Hebron. During his illness he would talk about how his Hebron cross country coach always said “even when you think you can’t run any further, you still have a mile in you”. And he did in fact run that extra mile.

A face with an object The Copy Book of Sallie Phillips, 1806

A

gift from Jack Higgins of South Paris, this copy book that belonged to Sallie (Sally) Phillips of Greene, Maine, was used at Hebron Academy in 1806, and its story provides a unique view into the Academy’s early years. The drawing, a very recent gift from Jack Higgins, represents Sally Phillips Cary circa 1835. The portrait image of the time was created by ‘Allie’ Cary Hayes, Sally’s daughter, possibly as a keepsake for the family in a time before photography. To construct a little of the story of Sallie Phillips . . . . She was born in 1790 and was at Hebron in 1806, likely ‘boarding round’ in the houses of the village. Like students of the day, she copied her lessons

and instruction into a ‘copy book,’ writing in longhand what, presumably, she was being asked to learn and apply by her instructor, then William Barrows, Jr. Only a few years after she was at Hebron, Sally married Francis Cary of Turner, Maine, in 1810 and raised her family there, helping to establish the Turner school and library. She died in 1865. Together, these two items frame a life of service to family and to education. Looking closely at Sally’s copy book, one may see her attention to detail as reflected in her writing and the organization of the exercises as well as her deductive thinking when laying out each problem with its explanation. . . no shortcuts and all her work shown!
