Inspiration for the 2022 Annual Benefit
This year’s Annual Benefit was inspired by the Museum’s recent exhibition, Moonstruck: Lunar Art from the Collection. From the nineteenth century to the present, artists have gravitated to the moon for reasons scientific, mythic, and symbolic. The broad range of 35 celestial artworks that were exhibited as part of Moonstruck explored the enduring fascination with the moon in all its phases. The moon has inspired scientific study, space travel, and countless beliefs, traditions, and stories.
The first section of Moonstruck featured the work of nineteenth-century European and American artists who gravitated to the moon as subject matter in response to rapid modernization and urbanization. A highlight was Ralph Albert Blakelock’s The Poetry of Moonlight. Inspired by the effect of moonlight within a landscape, he aimed to capture the overall mood of a scene rather than an accurate depiction of observed reality. His moonlit nocturnes are romantic reflections on the serenity of the natural world.
Moonstruck also addressed how views of the moon changed during the Space Age as science fiction morphed into reality. When NASA landed on its surface in 1969, the moon became tangible but no less captivating. Representations of the moon expanded our understanding of earth’s satellite and its many meanings. The artworks in Moonstruck reveal the inter sections of romanticism and technology, mystery and discov ery, imagination and fact.
Participant in the Youth Ambassadors program poses with Ralph Albert Blakelock’s The Poetry of Moonlight. HAYLEY LEVER, Moonlight, St. Ives, Cornwall, 1911, pencil, watercolor and gouache on paper. Museum Purchase. This exhibition featured new acquisitions that assert the Museum’s commitment to a more comprehensive representation of American art, including Jeremy Dennis’ The Moon Person Ascends. Dennis is a contemporary fine art photographer and a member of the Shinnecock Indian Nation whose artwork explores Native American oral traditions and histories. He based this digital photograph on a tale from the Biloxi Nation of the Mississippi Valley, in which the moon was once a per sonified being that existed among humans. According to the legend, when a child touched the shining moon, leaving behind a handprint, the Moon Person fled into the sky. The narrative accounts for the moon’s dis tance and the appearance of its cratered surface.
The Heckscher Museum of Art continues to present world-class exhibitions that feature its extensive collection, and looks forward to presenting new exhibitions and educational programming in 2023 in partnership with The Planting Fields Foundation, artist Courtney M. Leonard, The Amon Carter Museum of American Art, and more. In its next 100 years, the Museum will continue to grow in its role as a cultural anchor in our region, connecting visitors of all ages and backgrounds with exceptional experiences and interactions with art.
Moonstruck Mania: An Art & Science Adventure program, presented in collaboration with the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum & Planetarium. Artist Jeremy Dennis with The Moon Person Ascends.Welcoming Heather Arnet
Heather Arnet, Executive Director & CEO of The Heckscher Museum of Art, joined the organization in June of 2022. She brings a wealth of leadership experience, innovative thinking, and a passion for community engagement to her new role as the Museum looks forward to a vibrant future and its next century.
“Anna and August Heckscher dedicated The Heckscher Museum of Art 100 years ago to the children and families of Huntington. Their initial generosity gave seed to a museum which could serve as a community gathering space for joyful learning and quiet reflection, and grow to be a premiere arts institution attracting visitors to Huntington from around the world. I am honored to join a talented team at the Museum, working every day in continued pursuit of this vision. We are excited to share upcoming groundbreaking fine art exhibitions; innovative audience experiences; increased civic engagement programs; and enhanced community partnerships, and partnering with all of you to put these plans into action in 2023 and beyond.”
– Heather ArnetPrior to her position at The Heckscher Museum, Heather was most recently CEO of Women and Girls Foundation (WGF), a community-based organization in Pittsburgh, PA, dedicated to advancing gender equality. Throughout her 18-year tenure, she established award-winning youth and adult civic engagement programs, created extensive partnerships with museums and cultural centers, reached diverse communities, and raised significant support.
Heather serves as Co-Chair of the Council for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum and has worked collaboratively with teams at the Brooklyn Museum, the Frick Pittsburgh, the August Wilson Center for African American Culture, the Carnegie Museums, and the Andy Warhol Museum to develop public programming. Earlier in her career, Heather was Director of Development at City Theatre, and a Vice President of Marketing and Brand Development for internet-based start-up companies. She worked for five years on the production team for the educational television program
Heather holds a B.A. in Literary & Cultural Studies from Carnegie Mellon University and is completing her Master of Liberal Arts in Museum Studies from Harvard University Extension School. She looks forward to advancing the Museum’s community-centered efforts, engaging diverse audiences, and growing The Heckscher Museum’s regional and national significance.
