CELEBRATING 100 YEARS
April May June 2020
Welcome to the Centennial Celebration!
Long Island museum. Huntington’s own Arthur Dove is recognized as the first American abstract artist, exemplified in the painting Indian Summer, 1941. The celebration continues with exciting programs throughout the year. Curator Karli Wurzelbacher will lead fascinating dialogues with Sabine Rewald, Curator of Modern Art; Metropolitan Museum of Art, Huntington Historian Robert Hughes; Art Historian Dr. Carol Forman Tabler; and others during the Collection Conversation series. Save the date for the Museum’s anniversary weekend July 11 and 12. Music, art making for the whole family, and more is on the agenda. Invited local artists will make a big impression with large-scale printmaking through Big Ink, who will bring it's oversized printer “Big Tuna” and it's “Little Anchovy” presses.
The Heckscher Museum Celebrates 100: Tracing History, Inspiring the Future is a must-see exhibition. It follows the incredible growth of the Museum’s collections, from Anna and August Heckscher’s gift of 185 works, and the magnanimous gift of the Museum itself, to today, when the collection numbers more than 2,300 works of art. The masterworks on view come with superlatives: George Grosz’s Eclipse of the Sun, 1926, is one of the most important paintings of the 20th century; Lucas Cranach, The Elder’s Virgin, Child, St. John the Baptist, and Angels, 1534, is the oldest painting in the care of a

Exhibitions
The Heckscher Museum Celebrates 100 commemorates the fascinating people, events, and art throughout The Heckscher Museum’s first century. Brimming with masterworks and historical objects from the permanent collection, the exhibition takes visitors from the original collection donated in 1920 to the people, exhibitions, and acquisitions that have shaped a vibrant and significant museum. The Museum’s Permanent Collection has 2,300 objects focused on American landscape paintings, works by Long Island artists, as well as American and European modernism, and photography. Grouped chronologically by acquisition year, The Heckscher Museum Celebrates 100 highligts four important “moments” that tell the story of the Museum’s commitment to art, scholarship, education, and community. Long Island and Huntington are connecting threads throughout the Museum story.
THE FOUNDING COLLECTION Founded by Anna and August Heckscher, the “Huntington Fine Arts Museum” opened in 1920 with 185 works of art and other artifacts from their private collection. The collection mirrored that of wealthy collectors of the time, and also included women artists, well-known American painters, and contemporaries of the Heckscher’s. The August Heckscher Collection informs the Museum’s exhibitions and acquisitions to this day.
MAY 30 TO NOVEMBER 8 Sponsored by Robin T. Hadley The Cunniff Family
Don’t Miss: Lucas Cranach, The Elder, Virgin, Child, St. John the Baptist and Angels, 1534, the oldest European painting in an art museum on Long Island; Evelyn Beatrice Longman, Eternal Youth, 1920, a fountain sculpture commissioned by August Heckscher and the longest work on continuous view in the Museum. Ralph Albert Blakelock, The Poetry of Moonlight, c. 1880-1890, a favorite of the Heckscher’s, as Blakelock is the most represented artist in the original collection.
GEORGE GROSZ, ECLIPSE OF THE SUN AND HUNTINGTON It is one of the most often told stories about The Heckscher Museum. A rolled up canvas in a garage corner was discovered to be Eclipse of the Sun, 1926, a masterpiece by German-born artist George Grosz (18931959). Eva Gatling, the Museum’s first professional director, and one of the first women directors in the country, spearheaded the effort to buy the painting with donations from local residents, schoolchildren, and even then-New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller.
Exhibitions
The painting was purchased in 1968, and remains one of the most important in a public collection on Long Island. That purchase began a new appreciation for George Grosz and his connection to Huntington, where he lived from 1947 to 1959. He taught at the Museum as part of the Huntington Township Art League, and juried a number of art shows. The purchase strengthened Gatling’s legacy, as she guided the Museum’s growth and ushered in a prolific era of acquisitions. Don’t Miss: George Grosz, Eclipse of the Sun, 1926, captures the political and social corruption that characterized Germany in the mid-1920s. Discover objects that tell the painting’s story and intriguing acquisition history. George Luks, The Circus Tent, c. 1928-30, is an example of early 20th-century American realism. Ritual Bayou Series, c. 1972, by African American artist Romare Bearden and photography by Bernice Abbott diversified the collection, solidifying its strength in American art.
ARTHUR DOVE AND HELEN TORR Arthur Dove (1880-1946) is regarded as the first American abstract painter and quite possibly the most significant early 20th-century American Modernist. By simplifying forms and colors, he sought to distill the essential spirit of nature. Prominent artist and gallerist Alfred Stieglitz and art collector Duncan Phillips were supporters, the latter becoming a dedicated patron of Dove. Helen Torr (1886-1967), Arthur Dove’s wife, won a scholarship to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where she studied under the renowned painter and teacher William Merritt Chase (1849-1916). After Torr’s death, her sister Mary Rehm brought a volume of Torr’s work to the attention of Eva Gatling. Gatling organized an exhibition in 1972, beginning a reappraisal that has restored Torr’s place among America’s early Modernists. Dove and Torr lived aboard their yawl, Mona, in the harbors along the North Shore of Long Island throughout the 1920s and early 30s. Beginning in 1938, they lived in a small cottage on the Mill Pond in Centerport. The historic Dove/Torr Cottage was acquired by the Museum in 1998. Don’t Miss: Dove’s oil painting Indian Summer, 1941; and Helen Torr’s oil Oyster Stakes, 1929.
Also on view, objects from Dove’s studio and library, and a large selection of their works on paper.
THE BAKER/PISANO COLLECTION The Baker/Pisano Collection is the largest donation of artwork received by the Museum. The collection comprises 363 artworks gifted by Ronald G. Pisano (1948–2000) and D. Frederick Baker, mostly in 2001. Baker and Pisano focused their collecting
interests on American Modernism. According to Baker, “[The collection] reflects our interest in who the people were that created these works of art. When you start exploring, you realize there were patterns of friendship that existed between various artists. These people knew each other, and exhibited with each other and probably partied together; and somehow we just felt that was a fabric [representing] a whole American art scene.” Ron Pisano grew up in Huntington and Centerport. He was an art historian, a Heckscher Museum curator, Director of the Parrish
Art Museum, and an expert on the work of American artist William Merritt Chase. There are four Chase works on view, including a tile to highlight Baker and Pisano’s foundational scholarship on the artist and on The Tile Club. Pisano's interest in Chase expanded to 19th – and 20th-century Long Island artists. Fred Baker is a collector of art and a noted philanthropist. He was a Heckscher Museum Board member and a member of the Museum’s collections stewardship committee. He continues to write and speak on the subject of art and collecting. Don’t Miss: Georgia O’Keeffe’s watercolor Machu Picchu (Peru), c. 1956; Florine Stettheimer’s Portrait of Louis Bouché, 1923, one of the artworks often requested for loan to other museums. Winslow Homer, Resting Shepherdess, 1877, was later donated in Ron Pisano’s memory, and fit perfectly with the strengths of the Baker/ Pisano collection. Homer (18361910) was a member of The Tile Club, an artist’s society where members socialized, worked, and took sketching excursions to Long Island’s East End.
THE NEXT 100 YEARS The Heckscher Museum’s acquisitions today celebrate contemporary and established artists, recognize photography as an important medium, and add diversity to the collection. Recent acquisitions by Joseph Cornell, George Forster, Thomas Anshutz, Man Ray, Jane Wilson, and Red Grooms highlight the Museum’s continued commitment to preserving and interpreting 19th- and 20th-century American art. To demonstrate the strength and breadth of some recent acquisitions, several artworks will be seen in rotation over the course of the centennial exhibition to show as many works as possible. A LONG ISLAND’S BEST SUCCESS STORY In this centennial year, we asked Valley Stream Central High School alumnus Nicole Noel to share her experiences with The Heckscher Museum’s prestigious high school program. Nicole Noel was the Celebrate Achievement Best in Show recipient in Long Island’s Best 2016. She is currently working on a short film for her senior thesis at The School of Visual Arts, New York, majoring in Computer Graphics and Computer Art. HMA: Nicole, are you still pursuing your art? Nicole: Well, the short answer is yes! When I applied for Long Island’s Best, I had only recently started taking my art skills seriously and traditional mediums were all I had available to me. Since then, I've found inspiration in lots of different things and I've turned more towards digital mediums. While I'm still doing art, my style and mediums are drastically different from when I won. HMA: What life lessons did you learn during Long Island’s Best that helped in school and beyond? Nicole: Mostly lessons in work ethic. I put so much time into my piece but I was always plagued with thoughts like "What if it doesn't get accepted?" Thinking about my work probably gave me more fatigue than actually doing it. In time, I figured that I'd be more upset if I stopped, never to know what would come if I had not submitted something. I decided to continue because I like creating and telling stories. Even if nobody ever saw the piece, I'd be happy that I worked hard to make something I liked. HMA: What was the best part of the experience for you? Nicole: Definitely the people I got to meet. During the awards ceremony, there were
people from all over the New York area walking around. It was really my first interaction with a large part of the "art world." I remember it felt surreal to me because there weren’t just artists there; there were doctors, bankers, and many students who would probably become something completely removed from an artistic field, but they all had a shared interest and a love that brought them together in this one place. I heard lots of stories and got lots of advice, not just for my art but for my life. That is the memory I cherish the most about being a part of Long Island’s Best. HMA: What advice would you give students who are considering applying to Long Island’s Best? Nicole: Whatever the theme may be, don't try so hard to push out a literal interpretation or something you think the judges would just want to see – consider making something that you'd like and that you'd want to see. You are likely going to put countless hours of your life into this, so when the time comes to submit your
