LONG ISLAND’S BEST: YOUNG ARTISTS AT THE HECKSCHER 2007 APRIL 21 TO MAY 6, 2007 The Heckscher Museum of Art is dedicated to enriching the lives of students through dynamic connections between works of art and valuable hands-on learning experiences. To further encourage the use of the Museum as a rich resource in a high school student’s life, we developed our Arts-in-Education initiative, Long Island's Best: Young Artists at the Heckscher. This program, now in its eleventh year, culminates every spring in a two-week long exhibition of artworks by outstanding high school visual art students from throughout Long Island. Ninth through twelfth grade high school students are encouraged to participate in our program. Schools are offered the option of attending one of our School Discovery Programs, sending students to the Museum on their own time, or both. Participating students create original artworks that are inspired by works of art they viewed at the Heckscher Museum of Art. Along with his or her artwork, each student submits a written artist statement, explaining the connection between the artwork created and the artistic source(s) of inspiration at the Heckscher. The exhibition is then juried by our Chief Curator, Dr. Kenneth Wayne. This year 44 high schools participated in Long Island’s Best, including 18 schools from Suffolk County and 26 schools from Nassau County. Over 280 student entries were received with 75 selected for display in this year’s exhibition. We congratulate all of the participants in this year’s Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at the Heckscher for their commitment, dedication, creativity, and talent. To add to the celebration, the third class of the Heckscher-Usdan Student Art Institute will be inducted this evening. This year-long program begins in July, taking its talented high school visual arts students on a unique artistic journey of creation, exploration, and career preparation.
