company overview American fashion retailer Nordstrom was founded by John W. Nordstrom and Carl F. Wallin in Seattle, Washington, 1901. They began selling shoes and expanded throughout the years to a multi-billion dollar retailer that currently provides impeccable customer service, quality product and an Omni-channel shopping experience. From one tiny shoe store, Nordstrom has grown into a fashion specialty chain with global reach. It offers an unparalleled selection of shoes, clothing, accessories, and an extensive range of services to make shopping fun and convenient. Currently Nordstrom operates 121 full-line stores in the US and Canada - 323 stores in total which include Nordstrom Rack, two Jeffrey boutiques, and a clearance store. The company serves customers online through Nordstrom.com, Nordstromrack. com, and a private sale site HauteLook. Nordstrom continues to grow as they plan to open three new full-line stores in 2016, and relocate one full-line store. / 03
target market Nordstrom’s target customers are not all high-end shoppers. Because of Nordstrom Rack, they are able to target middle-class consumers and compete with Ross and TJX stores. However their full-line stores’ fashion inventory offers a range of products from high-end brands with premium seasonal trends, to mid-range items such as basic apparel. Affluent millennials age ranging from 16 to 34 are the main target, as they are well informed about the products that they buy and are Internet-savvy; therefore, boosting online business. Nordstrom currently caters to millennials by bringing famous UK brands like Topshop and working heavily on their digital media. Thus said, Nordstrom will continue to attract Millennials. Nordstrom customers are aware of the company’s wide range of products, and with the introduction to a new private label, it will intrigue contemporary millennials with a simple, yet high quality aesthetic, to shop the range of products available to them at a reasonable cost.
johnny chen (28) Raised in New York, Johnny is a third generation immigrant, where his family is from Taiwan. He graduated from Columbia with a degree in business and management, and currently runs his own entrepreneurship in a startup Men’s clothing brand. Earns $70,000/year. Single. Lives in a Chelsea studio apt. Drives a vintage 1989 BMW 635CSi on the weekends which was inherited.
lana o’neil (23) Johnny always looks for the best in quality and form. He is fashion conscious, but does not follow the trends he dresses according to his personal style that is simple and relaxed. Johnny loves to travel and well-cultured with both his Eastern and Western heritage. He is not afraid to take risks and try new things. Johnny is self-confident, have strong goal orientations, and very organized.
Lana is a young stylist originally from Chicago, Illinois. She moved to New York five years ago to study at FIT and is just starting her styling career. Lana does freelance, and works for the New York Times Style Magazine. Earns an average of $55,000/year. Recently moved into a studio apt. With her boyfriend of three years. Lana’s personal wardrobe is classic with a modern edge.
She likes to experiment in styling traditional menswear. On the weekends, Lana relaxes with her boyfriend by going to the MOMA and the Whitney and taking inspiration from modern art into her styling. She is proud of her Chicago routes; however loves to challenge herself and is interested in moving to London someday.

Why
?
Pushing forward with reaching more millennials, our team consolidated a collection of quality, contemporary pieces that would be suitable for both men and women. In this day and age of fashion, the line between genders has blurred - it is no longer rare to see men and women cross-dress in articles of clothing that can be suitable for both. Answering to this phenomenon occurring in the fashion world, we thought it would be a great opportunity to introduce a line dedicated to trendconscious unisex apparel. Our team chose “Alix.” as the name for its gender fluidity and for its meaning. “Alix” means “defender and noble.” We want our customers to be empowered by our designs and express their creativity through fashion. We also expect our customers 6to be “noble,” which defines as having fine personal qualities, high moral principles and ideals.
mood board Simple and elegant. Sophisticated in style and color. Structured in shape and silhouette. Elements of design that both men and women can share and will love as essentials in their everyday wardrobe. We want our “Alix” customers to be the forefront of bringing our unisex minimalist vision to life. Based on the color, fabric, and key item trends of the Fall Winter 16/17 season, we
developed a mood board that best visualizes our concept and who our target customers are. In our process of developing our line, we took “less is more” to heart. Basic , yet still fashionable, timeless, yet trendy. We seek to offer a quality selection of tops, bottoms, and outerwear that can be worn season after season, and still stay in style. / 07
color trends According to WGSN’s Fall Winter 16/17 Color Trend Briefing for Buyers, Warm cosmetic tones such as dusty peach, winter terracotta, and nudes offer a great color option for transitional deliveries - styled with core shades or shades of blue will create wearable looks. Light grey or clay is a seasonable core and fashion shade, workable for all garments as standalones or as pairs with other shades; 08 /
This color will give a modern appeal to outerwear looks. Intense dark blues such as navy and indigo will override black as the core dark color, giving sleek, classic vibes to pieces in this shade. Denim blues will also work great as transitional color options and can be the greater alternative to blacks. For softer yet modern looks, chalk or off white is great when applied to casual items, shirting, and knitwear.
fabric trends For fabrics, technical sheens offer a welcome break from the season’s tactile approaches to fabrics, with simple lowluster satin-like finishes bringing with them a metallic look. Simple fabrics such as cashmere, wool, wool cotton blends, and wool jersey , are always a go-to fabric for the season. Thicker materials are versatile in a sense that they can be shape-shifters,
able to be applied to any garment style. Wool can act as a structural aspect to a top or a pair of pants, but also be applied to softer garments such as sweaters . Tencel is also a new up and coming fabric that has a sheen finish, able to keep the body warm, and made of environmentally conscious materials. This material can be used for soft pants or button up shirts in replace of cotton fabrics. / 09
key item trends Wide-leg trousers are slowly trending for both men and women this season. Styles vary from cropped, high-waisted, or tapered. Premium joggers that revert to classic retro styles are coming back, but as hybrids; some may be tailored with crease seams, wider-leg styles, but still withhold the relaxed look. Relaxed tapered pants are also popular as they are versatile and subtle in style and shape. Roll neck tops have always been a basic fashion 10 /
item, evolving with the current trend of layering. Roll necks also come in variations, from chunky fabrics to ultra-fine materials. Pajama shirts have become a popular look over the years thanks to its simple silhouette - customers can wear it for both casual and formal occasions. For outerwear, military bombers have become a versatile piece for the season. Utility jackets have also become a trend with neutral color ways to give it a modern look.

“Alix” will be available to customers through online and select stores. On Nordstrom.com, customers will be able to see the introductory section on the landing page which will lead customers to a separate “Unisex” page introducing “Alix” and the apparel. Nordstrom will utilize its social media outlets such as Instagram to introduce customers to the new private label and create traffic to the website. We encourage customers to use “#Alix” or “#AlixApparel” to share their outfit photos and possibly get featured on the Nordstrom main Instagram page. In select stores, Alix will be featured in window displays during its time of the first launch. Each store will have different window displays from featuring items from the collection, to campaign photos for the release.

Three different manufacturers were used (manufacturers that Nordstrom currently uses) for their different specialties in apparel production. Freight calculations were based off of worldwidefreights.com. Manufacturing costs were calculated based on minimum wage of $46 per day in Hong Kong multiplied by 12 hour day shifts, which is translated into 720 min, then taken to account that items were made at 50% efficiency, and one item roughly would take 30~40 minutes to make (T-shirts and turtlenecks would take less time.)
